Under valued and under loved? I believe that a lot of the community is hating on this card for all the wrong reasons. Yes it was in the Jund “Land Matters” deck and it really has nothing to do with lands except for the high casting cost. Let’s break this card down a bit tho shall we? Crack open that hard carapace and see what kinda gem they really gave us with Thantis, the Warweaver.

Jund Aggro Gets a New Plaything All hail the Warweaver! Not really the spider lord I was hoping we’d get with our next spider legend (sorry Ishkanah, you’re still our darling), but we take what we can get from Wizards. So spider tribal aside, what does Thantis offer us:

1) 5/5 body with Vigilance and Reach for 3BRG. Not bad stats for the cost. Just a slightly larger Sentinel Spider for 1 more mana. Vigilance and Reach are a really good combination for swinging in for the beats and keeping a creature up for retaliation swings. 

2) All creatures attack each combat if able. Not horrible but not really the best ability in the world. Forcing out opponents to attack each turn is good for forcing more defensive players out of their comfort zone and throwing their fragile creatures into the fray. It also makes us a target. That’s where Thantis’ next ability comes into play.

3) Whenever a creature attacks you or a planeswalker you control, put a +1/+1 counter on Thantis, the Warweaver. Dear gods… So now not only are we forcing our opponents to attack, but if they so choose to attack us, they’ll make our commander more powerful with each creature swinging at us… and Thantis has reach and VIGILANCE. We swing each turn and have a huge blocker that can swat dragons out of the sky and squash ground forces under foot. I think we have the makings of a Commander deck folks…

Punish Our Opponents for their Folly If we’re going to make an aggressive commander deck, we gotta go all out. I’d personally run cards like Fervor and Fires of Yavimaya. We want our creatures to hit the board fast and hard. 

As a sub-theme I think some minor token generations would be beneficial. Dragonlair Spider, Broodmother Dragon, Giant Adephage and Verdant Force type creatures that can constantly pop out a never ending supply of attackers/blockers. And we can’t forget about Arachnogenesis!

Now that we have a slight board state to keep up with our opponents, we can start trying to manipulate the board. Cards like Hissing Miasma, Blood Reckoning, Marchesa’s Decree, Raking Canopy and Circle of Flames will punish opponents for wanting to take you out of the game before you’re ready. Creatures like Slumbering Dragon and Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs will keep watch over your life total with Thantis to make sure no one hits you too hard. 

Make Your Opponents Kill Each Other First  Since all creatures have to attack, we need a way to keep our butts off the chopping block. Cards like Disrupt Decorum, Rite of the Raging Storm and Assault Suit on your commander force our opponents to beat each other up instead of us for the time being. 

Value Town Cards 

Token decks will no longer be an issue with this tiny ally. Trample to all our creatures is also super relevant for taking players out of the game with our commander.

Need to take down a specific creature an opponent controls? What could be more terrifying than a giant spider screeching “GET OVER HERE!” while it pulls you towards it with a grappling hook. 

Thantis will most likely always have at least one +1/+1 counter on it at all times. Cauldron of Souls is a reliable and reusable way to recur your commander back should an attack not be in your favor. 

Cheap and efficient evasion to get thru damage and have a sold flying wall to defend with on the back swing. 

Situational but stacks nicely with Thantis’ second ability. Thantis will get the +1/+1 until end of turn for each attacking creature, regardless of who they are attacking. Throw this on a secondary beat stick or token. 

Champion’s Helm, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Whispersilk Cloak all fall in the protect your commander equipment category. 

If we go for the token route, since we’ll be throwing tokens into the fray each combat, might as well get secondary value from any of them dying. Stack counters on Thantis or if big spider should die, throw her entire Power/Toughness worth of +1/+1 counters on another creature you control. Counters will add up quickly with this one!

Combat too dangerous for Thantis to be swinging in? Just equip Dragon Throne of Tarkir to keep our commander from swinging in while giving your entire team a huge combat boost should they need it. Now Throne does need Thantis to tap so you will have shields down on their combat, but I hope you’ll use this ability responsibly *cough cough* Trample. 

Dragons are just bite sized morsels for the Warweaver to deal with, so giving your opponents some more toys to beat each other with shouldn’t hurt. 

Good cheap artifact removal that gives you creature tokens.
