Castle De Haar is located in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The current buildings were built upon the original castle, which dates back to 1391. Hendrik van Woerden gave the castle as a fiefdom to the De Haar family. The De Haar’s remained in possession of the castle and lands until 1440 when the last male De Haar family member died without heirs. The castle passed to the Van Zuylen family and suffered through a fire in 1482. The remaining structure, still used by the military, was incorporated into the new castle in the early 16th century. When Johan van Zuylen died without children, the castle fell into ruins and was eventually bequeathed to a cousin. Etienne van Zuylen, the husband of Helene de Rothschild of the Rothschild family, inherited the castle ruins. Financed by the Rothschilds, they set about fully restoring and modernizing the castle with the help of famous architect Pierre Cuypers. Cuypers worked on the project for twenty years. The castle has 200 rooms and 30 bathrooms.

A castle with more than 600 years of Dutch history

The largest castle in the Netherlands, the Kasteel de Haar, first appears in history in 1391, when the De Haar family received the infeudation of the castle - by which time there must have already been some kind of military building - and the surrounding land from Hendrik van Woerden, lord of the town of the same name, close to the castle.

However, the fief passed to the Van Zuylens, another family from Utrecht, around 1440, when the succession of the male line of the De Haar family was lost. The Van Zuylens settled in Utrecht around the 13th century and their family built their own castle, which is still preserved under the name of Slot Zuylen.

De Haar castle burned down around 1482 and the Van Zuylens rebuilt it, but only the residential parts, leaving its military function on hold until the 16th century, when it was rebuilt to regain its defensive character.

Throughout the 16th century it was reinforced at various stages, but in the mid-17th century the Van Zuylens neglected it and it began to fall into a state of ruin. However, in 1672, in the year of the Disaster (Rampjaar in Dutch), it escaped destruction at the hands of the French army. This was the time of the Franco-Dutch and Anglo-Dutch wars.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the main branch of the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family died out, but the family was still successful in keeping the castle in their hands. They were one of the last Dutch Catholic families.

In 1887, Baron Van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar married Baroness Hélène de Rothschild. Three years later she inherited De Haar Castle and in 1892 they both undertook the reconstruction work on the castle, which lasted nearly twenty years.

In 1912, the Kasteel de Haar acquired its present appearance, with its more than two hundred rooms and the omnipresence of the coats of arms of the De Haar and Van Zuylen families, as well as numerous Stars of David recalling the Rothschild religion.

DETAILS Cycling route: 22 minutes, 6.1 kilometers Castle: with a ticket for the castle, you can freely explore the grounds by yourself from 11.30 to 3.30 in the afternoon. Your tickets will be scanned at the entrance and in the summer months, Slot Zuylen does recommend a reservation.

Museum Audio Guide: You can download a free audio guide to the museum via the izi.Travel app. So you just need to bring your smartphone and your headphones, and you are ready to go!

Garden tour: In the summer months, you can follow a guided garden tour every Sunday at 14.00 hours. This needs to be reserved at least 24 hours in advance.

Picnic: You got the unique opportunity to order a picnic basket via your reservation from Museum cafe Koetshuis (at least 24 hours in advance). To have a picnic in the gardens near the castle, you will need a garden ticket or ticket for the castle and the garden.

They have a great agenda with special fairs and events - make sure to have a look here! For example, the Autumn-days-fair on the 2. & 3. of October - among other things, they are all about love for your garden and yourself. Here, several exhibitors offer a wide range of delicious delicacies and regional & lifestyle products! 🤍

☀️ Now it is about time for the golden hour - scroll through the beauty up there and see what is ahead of you! I have the ultimate cycling route for you to enjoy the beauty Oud-Zuilen has to offer & this magical time of the day is just perfect for doing so.

I even got an extra route for those who like long-distance running that you will love it because it will genuinely let you forget the kilometers you are making and allows you to explore!

Running route: Starting point at Nuede, 19.6 Kilometers - but please feel free to shorten it. What I sometimes did was start in Zuilen at the Juliana park instead to cut down a few kilometers.

🌬On our way, we will pass the Molen van de Buitenweg en Polder Westbroek - the smallest and biggest windmill of the province right next to each other, connected through monumental floodgates dating back as far as the 1830s. Cycling Route: 3 minutes, 1.2 kilometers

🚲 Another loop through a storybook neighborhood and off we go for a borrel right at the Water @Brasserie Oud-Zuilen.

Cycling Route: 20 Minutes, 5.7 kilometers DETAILS Menu: The Brasserie Oud-Zuilen is a unique and rather higher-ranked place for lunch & dinner as the French-oriented cuisine works exclusively with daily fresh and seasonal (regional) products. The menu is completed with a hand-picked wine card, including 50 very good quality wines, of which many can be ordered by the glass. But, of course, they also offer traditional Dutch Borrel on the terrace!

Special: They also offer boats tours on the Vecht with affordable deluxe borrel or lunch arrangements! Truly lovely to do with a small group of friends. Have a look at all the options right here. Een van de allermooiste plekken die we bezocht hebben is Kasteel De Haar. Het neogotische kasteel is in 1892 gebouwd vanuit de ruïnes van het oorspronkelijke 12e eeuwse kasteel. Baron Étienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar was een afstammeling van de oorspronkelijke tak van Zuylens die het kasteel al eeuwenlang in eigendom hadden. Aangezien zij voornamelijk resideerden in de zuidelijke Nederlanden en later dus in België, was het kasteel zwaar verwaarloosd. Het verval was ingezet in 1674 toen het tijdens een zware storm beschadigd was geraakt. In 1887 trouwde Étienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar met Helene de Rothschild uit de invloedrijke en zeer welgestelde familie Rothschild. Het stel liet het kasteel volledig renoveren en verbleef er in de zomermaanden, voornamelijk september. Vele bekenden verbleven ooit in het prachtige kasteel, dat tegenwoordig (deels) een museum is. ———— One of the most beautiful places we’ve visited is castle De Haar. He inherited the castle and its title and thanks to the wealth of Helene, they restored the castle and made it a magnificent place. Here the family stayed during September, when they would invite a selection of guests. Famous persons from all over the globe visited the castle. Nowadays the castle is (partly) a museum. The oldest historical record of a building at this location dates to 1391. In that year, the family De Haar received the castle and the surrounding lands in fief. The current buildings, built over an older castle, date from 1892.

The arms of the previous owners (Van Zuylen) are three red columns placed 2 and 1 on a white field. This explains the red and white decoration on the window shutters.

You'll be welcomed by the English garden, a magical place full of English roses, then continue towards the French landscape with perfectly arranged flowers, grasslands and romantic paths.
