Denzel Curry - ZUU
Rapper Denzel Curry just dropped a new album this past weekend called King Of The Mischievous South, Volume 2. As a sequel to a record that looks like an early mixtape from 2012, I’ve been a pretty big fan of his for the last five years or so. I enjoyed 2016’s Imperial quite a bit, but it didn’t sink in until 2019’s ZUU. There are a handful of albums that I associate with summer, and that record is one of them, because I played it so much when it came out in that summer. That record is so fun, loose, and energetic with lots of clever bars, catchy hooks, and wonderful production galore. At a brisk 29 minutes, it makes for a quick listen, but five years later, it still really holds up today.
This wasn’t my introduction to Curry’s music, but it was the album that turned me into a huge fan, as well as showed people that he’s a force to be reckoned with. Curry’s got such a charismatic presence, both in terms of his voice and what he has to say. ZUU is interesting, because its main theme is based on Curry paying homage to his roots in South Florida, specifically Carol City, and the album is reflective of that in both its lyrics and sounds. This is a Florida rap album, through and through, but it’s a lot of fun.
You could make an argument that the lyrics aren’t anything unique, but they don’t need to be. They’re celebratory, because they’re celebrating Florida and the many artists that came before him from the state. This is just one of those albums that you can bump and have fun with, and you don’t need to overthink it. A lot of people want to put rap to a higher standard, like its lyricism can only be intelligent and smart sounding, instead of anything else. Rock music has plenty of dumb lyrics, but why don’t people care about those? I know a couple reasons, but regardless, this record is a ton of fun and the lyrics do have some clever turns of phrase, references, and jokes thrown in them to make them fun and funny exciting.
I just really enjoy this album, especially for what it is — a short, catchy, and fun southern hip-hop record with a lot of trunk knockers that you can play loudly. It won’t win any awards, or blow someone away that doesn’t like the genre, but who cares? A good album is a good album, no matter the style. ZUU is a fun ride through South Florida, and instead of pretending you’re better than listening to some trunk knockers, just let loose and have some fun. Life is too short to be so uptight and critical about music, especially if you’re looking for a good time.

Denzel Curry - King Of The Mischievous South, Volume 2
One of the most underrated rappers is back again with a relatively short album, but this time it’s under the banner of a “mixtape,” despite being an album. The rapper is Denzel Curry with his new project, King Of The Mischievous South, Volume 2, and this comes a couple of years later after 2022’s Melt My Eyez See Your Future, which was a pretty damn good album that showcased his penchant for jazzier and more atmospheric production, as well as clever and introspective bars. There were some catchy bangers, but it was a relatively underrated album that, unless you were already a fan, the mainstream didn’t really pick up on.
Back again two years later, we got a project with a completely different vibe, and this one reminds me a lot of 2019’s ZUU, which is when I really became a fan of his work. That record was a 29-minute love letter and homage to South Florida, where he’s from, and every track was a celebration of where he came from. It was a short and sweet little record that was a ton of fun, despite not saying or doing anything new or revolutionary, but not everything needs to be. KOTSM is sort of similar, only instead featuring a collective of southern or southern-adjacent artists (whether they utilize southern sounds or they collaborate with a lot of artists in that sound), and it celebrates 90s and 00s southern hip-hop as a whole.
Not only does this album feature a lot of newer artists, it also features some legends of hip-hop. That Mexican OT, Kenny Mason, Key Nyata represent the younger generation, whereas 2 Chainz, Juicy J, and Project Pat are some of the older artists that appear here. This record is a 35-minute banger, front to back. This is just as high energy as ZUU was, and just as fun and colorful. There isn’t much to it, but if you love energetic, fun, and clever southern rap, you’ll dig this. Songs like “Black Flag Freestyle,” “Hot One,” “Cole Pimp,” “G’z Up,” and “Sked” are some of the catchiest and most fun songs I’ve heard all year.
This record won’t change your mind if you’re not into rap, and it’s a bit of a feature-heavy album, but that doesn’t bother me for two reasons: the features are good, and when Curry does show up, he sounds great and delivers some awesome stuff. He feels more or less like a curator here, but at the same time, it’s cool when he pops in and out. He does this thing, dips out for a minute and lets a guest do their thing, and then comes back again, so it’s good. I just really love this record, and if you want some catchy and fun southern rap that’s real short, you’ll have a blast with this one.
