✨✨✨
Doflamingo lounged on the throne of the Underworld; a seat of power in a kingdom of wailing shadows where only the strongest survived. Long inky strings unfurled and danced from his fingertips, pulsing with a restless hunger. They longed to slither into the mind of their chosen prey, to burrow into dreams, to twist them into nightmares. However, there were no dreams to invade.
Because the swordsman had not slept.
Doflamingo clicked his tongue, leaning back as the strings snapped and dissolved into nothing.
Soooo close. He had been so damn close!
He could still taste it, the sharp tang of fear melting into sweet honey on his tongue. That delicious primal terror had driven the swordsman’s hand and forced him to strike.
For a moment, Doflamingo had thought it was over. That the swordsman, pushed past his breaking point, had cut down the Sun God himself. Yet three days had passed, and the silence told him otherwise.
Three days without sleep.
Either his prey was too afraid to close his eyes… or he had somehow steeled himself against the tricks of the God of Nightmares.
Doflamingo sneered.
It didn’t matter. Mortals were fragile creatures. No one could last forever without sleep.
His fingers twitched, conjuring a leopard's claw with a flex of his wrist. He could feel a Lucci’s power pulsing through him.
If visions wouldn’t break the swordsman, then another method was required. Something with a bit more brute force.
He let his head tilt back against the cold obsidian throne. His throne. He had fought for it, killed for it, and he would gladly do so again to keep it.
Doflamingo’s mind churned through the pieces of information he had gathered.
The Sun God and his swordsman were headed for Ohara. That much was for certain.
The waters were warmed from Syrup Village, but they had no ship to reach the Island’s previous location. If they did, they would have been long gone by now, but the swordsman gave no inkling that they were on water, which meant they were still looking.
Doflamingo grinned, baring his teeth like a predator that had just caught the scent of wounded prey.
He knew exactly where to look for them.
✨✨✨
“This stuff smells really good!”
Nika’s overly bright voice cut through the thick fog of Zoro’s exhaustion.
Zoro blinked blearily, barely processing the words. His body felt leaden, his limbs moving on sheer instinct rather than conscious effort. Each step was a battle, his boots dragged against the earth, carving uneven jagged trails in the white snow. The cold air bit at his face, but it did little to keep him awake. Even the river beside them, frozen solid, let out the occasional creak and groan. Its muffled current ran deep beneath the surface, whispering like a lullaby that only made his eyes droop lower.
His head dipped forward, the pull of sleep almost winning, before a jolt of awareness yanked him back.
Nika was beside him, sniffing at an open vial Hancock had given him. Zoro had to admit that the scent was pleasant. It drifted through the air, sweet and warm and tickled the edges of his mind. It reminded him of the effect her love powder had on him, although not nearly as potent.
Zoro scowled at the memory. Maybe it was the exhaustion making him irritable, but he found himself more annoyed than usual.
“Just cork it. You’re gonna drop it and waste it all if you keep opening it to sniff like that.” Zoro grumbled.
“I can’t help it! Hancock said the smell was sensational.” Nika beamed, completely unbothered by Zoro’s mood.
Zoro’s frown deepened. He remembered exactly what Hancock had said.
“I believe the word she used was sensual.” Zoro replied flatly, not bothering to hide the irritation in his tone.
Hancock had seemed a little too eager when she gave Nika that vial. Sure, she had claimed it was to prevent the cut under Nika’s eye from scarring, but Zoro wouldn’t put it past her to lace it with something else. Some last-ditch effort to make the Sun God fall for her.
Nika, oblivious as ever, simply hummed.
“Well, whatever you call it, it’s nice! It doesn’t stink like her powdery one.” Nika finally popped the cork back in place and stuffed the bottle into the pouch hanging from his belt. The same belt that now carried Wado at his hip.
Zoro’s gaze flickered to his sword. Seeing Wado in someone else’s possession should have unsettled him, but strangely, it didn’t. Not when it was Nika.
“I still feel kinda bad about leaving.” Nika admitted, his eyes lifted upwards as if he was recalling the memory. “Hancock looked so sad when she hugged me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone look that housebroken before.”
Zoro blinked. The words barely registered through the sluggish haze of his mind.
“Heartbroken…” Zoro muttered after a pause, his brain taking longer than usual to catch up. “You mean heartbroken.”
“That’s what I said!” Nika turned his attention back to Zoro with a pout, crossing his arms. His bottom lip jutted out, irritation flickering in the warm auburn eyes of his human disguise.
Zoro exhaled through his nose, shaking his head. His eyelids felt impossibly heavy again, the edges of his vision blurring in and out of focus. He clenched his jaw and straightened, forcing himself upright. How long had it been since he last slept? Days? A week? No… weeks was too much, wasn’t it? It didn’t matter. However long it took, however much it cost him, he would endure.
Nika had been insisting, even pleading, that Zoro rest, but he couldn’t. Not when closing his eyes meant opening the door to that bastard’s influence. If this Doflamingo, this God of Nightmares, was using Zoro to track them then he would notsleep. He wouldn't let that conniving monster worm his way into his head, wouldn't allow him to twist his mind into a weapon against Nika. He wouldn’t let him steal Sun from this world or steal Nika away from Zoro.
Zoro’s eyes snapped open.
When had he closed them?!
A spike of panic shot through his chest. How long had they been shut? Seconds? Minutes? His feet were still moving, his body running on stubborn instinct alone. Nika was beside him, Wado cradled carefully in his hands, his expression lined with worry.
Zoro blinked hard, trying to focus. The world around him was warped, blurry at the edges, as if he were wading through a fog thick enough to choke him. His thoughts felt tangled, slipping from his grasp.
Where were they going again?
Zoro shook his head, trying to clear it. If he could just… rest his eyes for a second, maybe he could think more clearly. Maybe if he got a little sleep, just a moment’s worth, he’d be more alert. He would be more capable of protecting Nika… if he… just… got…
Zoro’s eyes dropped shut. The second he closed them, darkness invaded his vision. That darkness that he now remembered was eager to swallow him whole!
No!
A snarl ripped from Zoro’s throat as he forced himself down, knees crashing into the snow. His hands plunged into the frost, and before Nika could react, Zoro buried his face into the ice-cold bite of the earth, rubbing his skin against the freezing surface until the jolt of cold shocked his senses back to reality. His breath came in ragged gasps, his fingers digging into the snow until the frozen earth packed under his fingernails.
Above him, Nika let out a long frustrated sigh.
"Zoro really needs to sleep."
Zoro slowly sat back on his heels, lifting his head to meet Nika’s worried gaze. Snow clung to his skin, melting against the heat of his face. Before he could shake it off, Nika was already reaching out. His hands brushed the frost from Zoro’s cheeks with far too much care for someone who was supposed to be frustrated with him.
Zoro scowled.
“I'm not sleeping.” The words came out more angry than Zoro intended, but he didn’t take them back.
Nika frowned, lips pressing into a thin line as his auburn eyes searched Zoro’s face.
“Why is Zoro so stubborn?”
Zoro let out a rough bark of laughter, shaking his head as he struggled to his feet. His body swayed, the world tilting dangerously for a moment, but he planted his feet firmly.
“That’s rich coming from you.” Zoro muttered under his breath.
Nika’s jaw dropped, eyes going wide with offense.
“What?! I'm not stubborn!” Nika snapped, stomping his foot into the snow.
“We haven’t even been traveling together that long, and I already have a list of times you’ve been stubborn.” Zoro replied, shooting him a flat look.
Nika huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. “Oh, really? Name one.”
Zoro didn’t hesitate. “Before we left Hancock’s, you had an argument with Sonia about artichokes.”
“That wasn’t me being stubborn! That was me standing up for my principles!”
“Oh, so you had to argue for twenty minutes because she said artichokes are ‘meaty’?”
“They’re vegetables, Zoro!” Nika shot back, eyes blazing with righteous fury. “Vegetables don’t have meat!”
“This is exactly what I mean.” Zoro groaned, dragging a hand down his face. “The center is the ‘heart’ of the artichoke. When it’s cooked the texture resembles meat…”
Nika narrowed his eyes, still looking unconvinced by the explanation.
“Fine.” Nika muttered through gritted teeth, brushing the discussion to the side. “Can we just agree that we’re bothstubborn, and then Zoro can take a nap?”
Zoro squinted, seeing right through the God’s ploy. “Nice try, but no.”
As the edges of Zoro’s vision became fuzzy again, the creeping fog of exhaustion curled around him. With a sharp inhale, he brought both hands to his face before slapping his cheeks hard. The sting barely registered, but it was enough to jolt him back from the threatening call of sleep.
Nika’s irritation wavered the moment Zoro did it. His expression darkened, displeased by the extremes Zoro was going to just to stay awake.
“Why are you like this?!” Nika said with a  frustrated growl, throwing his hands in the air.
Zoro looked at him, really looked at him. Despite the oil, the crescent scar below Nika’s eye stood out against his otherwise unmarred skin. A mark left behind because of him. The sight of it twisted in Zoro’s gut, a fresh stab of guilt lacing through the exhaustion.
“I just don’t want you getting hurt…” Zoro muttered. It wasn’t an excuse. Just the truth.
Nika’s expression softened, the fight leaving him.
“…And I don’t want you hurting yourself to keep me safe.” Nika murmured.
For a long moment, they stood there, both of them too stubborn to yield; not because they didn’t care, but because they did.
Zoro exhaled through his nose, forcing himself to focus.
“If you’re that concerned, then make this easier on me. Just… keep talking. Keep me alert. Remind me what we’re doing.”
Nika let out an exaggerated sigh, but the worry still lingered in his eyes.
“Hancock told us to follow the river.” Nika reminded him. “She said we might find a boat in better condition than the last place we went to.”
Zoro blinked slowly, forcing the sluggish gears in his mind to turn. Right. Hancock had mentioned that the morning after his last nightmare. After she’d spent an infuriating amount of time yelling at him. The woman had practically lost her mind when she found out what he had done to Nika in his sleep.
Zoro shook the memory away. He had enough weighing on him already, he didn’t need to dwell on that too.
Zoro pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to force the haze out of his thoughts. Everything felt out of order.
“Weren’t we getting a boat from Syrup Village?” Zoro asked.
Nika’s mouth pulled to the side, his expression half sympathetic, half exasperated.
“Zoro’s memory really sucks right now.” Nika said bluntly. “We already tried that. Remember?”
Zoro frowned, trying to think past the exhaustion. He dug through the murkiness of his thoughts, dragging up fragments of memory: yelling, angry voices, rocks being thrown…
They had been chased out of that village.
“Oh, right.” Zoro let out a heavy sigh and readjusted the bags Hancock had forced Zoro to carry. She claimed the exercise would help keep him awake, but he had an inkling that it was because she didn't want Nika to bear the burden of carrying anything. “Let's just keep walking then.”
As Zoro walked, he couldn't help but notice how unsteady the ground felt beneath him. He stepped forward, boots crunching against the frost, but his legs nearly buckled under him. Warmth curled around his arm, steadying him before he could stumble. Zoro leaned into Nika's steadying hold, his touch radiating that ever-present comforting heat. It made him feel safe. It wrapped around Zoro like a lull, urging him to rest, to let go.
Panic spiked in his chest, causing Zoro to yank his arm free.
Nika flinched, the light in his eyes dimming.
“M’sorry.” Zoro’s guilty words tumbled out before he could stop them. “I like when you hold me… but your warmth makes me sleepy.”
Nika’s eyes widened.
“Zoro likes when I hold him?” Nika repeated, hesitant, like he was testing the words out loud.
Zoro barely registered his own confession. He was too tired to care or filter himself. It was just the truth, plain and simple.
“Yeah.” Zoro’s voice came out sluggish, his head dipping slightly before he forced himself upright again. “I thought that was obvious.”
Nika blinked at him, tilting his head looking completely puzzled.
“Most people tell me to back off.” Nika admitted after a beat. “But sometimes I forget.” He rubbed at his arm absentmindedly. “My brothers tolerate it, even if it bugs them too.”
Zoro’s brows furrowed.
How could anyone look at the way Nika reached out and want to push him away? The warmth of his touch wasn’t something to be “tolerated”. It wasn’t something to push aside. It was something to cherish.
“If I wasn’t so sleepy, I would never want you to stop.” Zoro murmured with a yawn.
Nika stopped walking completely, staring at Zoro like he was speaking another language.
“Really?” Nika’s fingers twitched at his sides, like he wanted to reach for Zoro again but wasn’t sure if he should.
“Yeah…” Zoro blinked, confused by the disbelief in Nika’s tone. He halted his own steps, studying Nika’s expression. Why was that so surprising? “Hancock liked hugging you too.”
Nika looked even more confused.
“I thought you said Hancock let me ‘cause she loved me.” Nika set his hands on his hips as he tried to piece together what Zoro was trying to say.
That was when Zoro realized the predicament he walked himself into.
He was being honest. Too honest. His sleep-starved brain had stripped away all hesitation, leaving him perilously close to revealing his own feelings for the God.
Zoro stared at Nika, who only stared back, waiting for an explanation.
Think, dammit, think!
The silence stretched to the long where it had become awkward, but his mind failed to come up with a way to pivot the conversation.
Zoro’s eyes landed on Wado resting against Nika’s hip. The familiar white hilt made him think of Kuina and her presence in his dreams.
“What happens to us when we die?” Zoro blurted the question before he could stop himself.
The question sucked the air from the conversation. Nika stiffened, his expression shifting in an instant. His confusion melted into concern. It was the same fragile look he had given Zoro when he refused the offer of immortality.
That wasn’t the topic Zoro had meant to change the conversation to, he didn’t mean to make Nika worry, but now that it was out he didn’t take it back. However, it was a question that had lingered in the back of his mind for a long time. Maybe the answer would explain why Kuina still felt so close.
Nika was quiet, his fingers tightening in the folds of his cloak.
“The God of Death leads lost souls to their resting place, but they don’t disappear.” Nika said at last. He lifted his gaze to the sky, eyes shining. “They become the stars.”
“Stars?” Zoro blinked in surprise. He raised his own gaze, staring at the vast endless sky above them.
The stars flickered, pulsing like distant heartbeats. Beating with life.
Nika nodded.
“They watch over the people in this realm, over their loved ones.” Nika continued, his voice softer now, more serious. He understood the weight of what he was explaining. “Even when the world is at its darkest, they’re still there. Still shining.”
Zoro let that sink in as his eyes continued to scan the darkness above. The sky stretched vast and empty, a hollow void where the Sun should have been. Their world had been swallowed by shadows, and yet the stars had never left.
Kuina had never truly left.
A deep breath escaped Zoro, the tension in his chest loosening like a knot finally unraveling. A weight he hadn’t realized he was carrying had lightened, just enough to breathe easier.
“…So even if we can’t see them, they’re still with us.” Zoro murmured, his lips twitching into the faintest smile.
Nika nodded. “Always.”
Warmth spread through Zoro’s chest. Kuina was still there. Maybe she always had been.
When Zoro finally lowered his gaze, he found Nika was already watching him. The wind stirred between them, rustling his cloak, carrying with it an odd sense of closeness; as if the world itself was nudging Zoro forward, urging him toward the light standing beside him.
“Thanks for sharing this with me.” Zoro said earnestly.
Nika’s face lit up, his smile as radiant as the stars above them. The kind of light that made the darkness easier to bear. For now, that was enough to keep Zoro moving forward.
With that, they continued walking along the river’s edge, their footsteps crunching softly against the frost-covered ground. The frozen surface reflected the stars that managed to pierce through the void. Nika stayed close, his watchful gaze flickering toward Zoro every time his steps faltered. Each time, the God reached out, steadying him.
It was a strange feeling, realizing someone was looking out for him so openly. For years, Zoro had relied on his own strength, carrying burdens in silence, never expecting a hand to reach for him when he stumbled. Yet Nika never hesitated.
The river twisted and curved as they moved further inland, the landscape opening into a wide, desolate clearing. Here, the water split off into multiple branches, each snaking into different directions like veins across the earth.
Nika let out a long sigh, hands on his hips as he surveyed the scene before them.
“That’s a lot of different paths to take.” Nika’s shoulders slumped. “I really wish we still had Nami’s map.”
Zoro frowned, scanning their options. The lack of direction was frustrating, but turning back wasn’t an option.
“We just have to pick one and stick with it.” Zoro replied firmly despite his exhaustion. His gaze swept across the branching paths, finally settling on the southernmost route. His gut told him it was the right choice. “We can try going that way.”
Nika let out a loud dramatic groan.
“Zoroooo, we just came from that way!” Nika whined, his entire body sagging with exaggerated frustration. He slumped forward, head lolling to the side, knees bending as if the weight of Zoro’s poor navigation skills was physically crushing him. The display lasted only a second before he straightened with newfound resolve, his expression turning serious.
“New rule,” Nika declared, jabbing a finger toward Zoro. “Zoro isn’t allowed to pick which direction we go anymore.”
Zoro bristled. “What?! What kind of stupid rule is that?!”
“One that will keep us from getting lost.” Nika stated firmly.
Zoro scowled, opening his mouth to argue, but then promptly shut it. One, because he was too damn tired to get into a pointless debate, and two… ugh. He was too tired to even remember what the second reason was.
Nika hummed thoughtfully as he turned his attention to the frozen river. His sharp eyes scanned the ice before pointing toward a stretch where the water seemed undisturbed beneath the frost.
“The water under the ice is calmer over there.” Nika observed, nodding toward the furthest path. “If we find a boat down that way, it should be in better condition to sail.”
Zoro followed his line of sight, narrowing his eyes. The area Nika pointed to did seem more stable. It seemed less cracked, less broken apart from the shifting currents below. However, there was one glaring issue…
“And how exactly do we get across to there?” Zoro arched a skeptical brow.
Nika sucked in his cheek, clearly mulling over the issue. His gaze flickered to the river, then back at Zoro, before settling on the ice once more.
“I think the ice is still thick enough to walk across.” He nodded to himself, exuding confidence that made Zoro immediately wary.
Zoro frowned, shifting his gaze to the ice. “Are you sure about that?” He studied its surface. It was white but marbled with patches of gray. A clear warning sign. “It’s melting. Probably because of your powers stretching from the ocean.” He tilted his head, straining his ears. “I can still hear the water running underneath it.”
Nika hesitated, considering this. Then, with his usual lack of concern, he stepped right up to the river’s edge and pressed a sandaled foot against the ice. Zoro tensed, watching closely for any sign of weakness. The ice held. Nika then placed his full weight onto it.
Snap!
Instinct overrode thought.
Zoro lunged forward, grabbing a fistful of Nika’s coat and yanking him back onto solid ground. His arms wrapped tightly around him, holding him close, bracing for the inevitable collapse of the ice, yet no cracks formed. No splintering, no sudden plunge of ice into freezing water.
Nika’s warm back was fully pressed against Zoro’s chest. He tilted his head back, auburn eyes lifting to meet Zoro’s with pure confusion.
“What did Zoro do that for?”
Zoro’s heartbeat pounded against his ribs.
“Didn’t you hear the ice cracking?” Zoro questioned. His voice came out rough, edged with lingering adrenaline.
Nika blinked. Then, he shook his head.
“The ice is fine. It still looks the same. See?” Nika gestured toward the river.
Zoro’s gaze snapped to the ice. It was… untouched. Unbroken.
“But I heard it…” Zoro’s brows furrowed as his mind struggled to make sense of it. “I know I heard it.”
Nika raised a hand and patted Zoro’s cheek in a soothing motion. “I really think Zoro is just tired.”
Zoro exhaled sharply through his nose, finally loosening his grip. Maybe his exhaustion was getting to him. Now that he thought about it, the sound hadn’t quite been the sharp splintering of ice, it had been more like a snapping branch. Or maybe his mind was playing tricks on him, twisting his senses out of paranoia.
Nika took the opportunity to slip free from Zoro’s grasp and step onto the ice again, moving with an ease that only made Zoro’s nerves prickle. He walked further out this time, his sandals gliding smoothly over the frozen surface. No creaks, no cracks. The ice held.
Zoro watched with narrowed eyes as Nika inched closer to one of the gray-colored patches.
Grooooaaan.
The ice let out a deep, warning sound. Nika instantly stepped back, his arms raised slightly to steady himself.
“I think we’ll be safe as long as we don’t walk on the gray bits.” Nika declared, looking to Zoro for confirmation.
Zoro’s brow twitched.
“You think?” Zoro’s arms crossed as he eyed the ice warily. “I’m gonna need a bit more certainty than that.”
Nika puffed his cheeks out, his lips pursing into a small heart-shaped pout.
“It’s fiiiiiine!” Nika insisted. “If we fall in, we just swim to shore and I can warm us both up!”
Zoro let out a long-suffering sigh. That was not reassuring. He had no doubt Nika could heat them up, but that didn’t mean he wanted to go plunging into freezing water. Still, he trusted Nika’s instincts. If he said it was safe enough, then Zoro would believe him. Decision made, he stepped onto the ice.
Nika beamed at him, his whole face lighting up with happiness.
Despite the tension curling in his gut, Zoro eased into the process of crossing. The ice creaked under his weight, but it held. It was nerve-wracking, but not impossible. At least if something did happen, Nika would be there to help him.
As they neared the center of the river where it branched off, Zoro could feel the ice beneath them grow thinner. It wasn’t just the sight of the gray patches, there was a different tension underfoot, a fragile quality that set his nerves on edge. Every step carried a new risk. Even Nika, normally so carefree, was moving with more awareness. His tongue poked out from the corner of his mouth in concentration as he strategized his next step, his eyes flicking between the ice and the path ahead.
“AaaggGGHhh!”
Nika’s strangled yelp immediately caught Zoro's attention. His head snapped toward Nika just in time to see dark strings coiling around the God’s limbs, tightening like snakes. Before Nika could react, they yanked him down onto the ice with a brutal THUD. The impact sent cracks spider-webbing outward beneath him.
“Nika!”
Zoro surged forward, but before he could reach him, more strings shot out. Thin blackened threads that lashed around his wrists like shackles, jerking his arms back. He growled, yanking against them with all his strength, but they held firm, biting into his skin.
Nika gritted his teeth, his auburn eyes darkening with fury the second he saw Zoro struggling. Heat flared around him, brown hair flickering to white as his body steamed with power. The strings smoked where they touched his skin, one snapping completely as the sheer force of his power burned through it. The ice beneath him sizzled.
“I’d be careful if I were you.” A voice as smooth as silk drifted from the treeline.
Both Zoro and Nika snapped their heads toward the source of the sound.
A figure stepped out from the shadows, his tall frame catching the faint glow of the stars. The garish pink feathers of his coat shifted with the wind, and with them came a scent that made Zoro’s stomach churn. That wide unnerving smile and that putrid scent.... He’d experienced both in his dreams.
The God of Nightmares.
“Lose your temper and the ice will melt.” Doflamingo continued, his voice dripping with amused malice. His fingers twitched.
Zoro’s restraints tightened without warning. The strings dug into his wrists and pulled. His body lurched backward against his will, his boots scraping the ice as it groaned ominously beneath him.
“You wouldn’t want your swordsman to fall in, now, would you?” Doflamingo mused, tilting his head. “I hear drowning in freezing waters is an unpleasant way for mortals to go.”
The moment the words left his mouth, Nika’s flames extinguished. The fire vanished as if snuffed out, but his wide furious eyes remained alight, locked onto the newcomer with burning intensity. His pupils had shrunk to pinpricks, his breath heavy with restrained fury.
“You’re the one that's been messing with Zoro’s dreams.” Nika seethed.
Doflamingo’s grin grew wider.
“I couldn’t resist once I learned you were traveling with a mortal. And one with blessed weaponry no less!” A dark, mocking chuckle rumbled from Doflamingo’s chest. “Such a weak mortal… easy to manipulate as any other.”
Zoro’s jaw clenched. His teeth bared in a silent snarl as he yanked violently against the strings binding him. He refused to be controlled, but the moment he struggled, Doflamingo’s fingers twitched.
Zoro’s body moved, but not by his own will.
His limbs jerked against him, like a marionette on invisible threads. His muscles strained as he fought back, but the more he resisted, the more his body betrayed him. His arms locked up, his legs wobbled forward, dragging him across the ice. Each step brought him closer to the God of Nightmares.
A furious roar shattered the night.
“KNOCK IT OFF!” Nika’s voice boomed across the frozen landscape, shaking the icicles from the nearby branches above. His entire body jerked as he fought against his own restraints, his struggles causing the cracks beneath him to lengthen. “YOU DON’T GET TO TREAT ZORO THAT WAY!”
Doflamingo let out a cold, amused hum.
“Why not?” The repulsive God mused. “You got to have your fun with the mortal. Now it’s my turn.”
Doflamingo yanked Zoro closer, but the swordsman dug his heels in.
Every ounce of strength he had went into resisting. The strings tightened so brutally that they cut off his circulation, numbing his limbs, but it was enough. His boots scraped against the ice, slowing his movement just enough to halt his advance.
Doflamingo stumbled forward with the unexpected resistance, stepping fully onto the frozen river. His grin faltered into a frown.
Zoro ignored him. His gaze snapped straight to Nika.
“Do what you need to do to break free.” Zoro ordered. He didn’t care if the ice shattered beneath him. He didn’t care if Doflamingo prevented Nika from saving him. All that mattered was that Nika escaped. “Don’t worry about me.”
The wind howled around them, as if the very world itself rejected Zoro’s words.
“Oh, but he should.” Doflamingo sneered, his composure returning as he straightened. He took another step towards Zoro, his sharp gaze appraising him like a mere object to be toyed with.
“I came a long way to end this, and I expect a proper show to make it worth my while.”
Zoro bared his teeth and yanked hard against the strings. The sheer rage burning in his chest was almost enough to dull the pain.
He hated this. He hated being used. Being strung along like a puppet, and from the pure seething wrath burning in Nika’s eyes, Zoro knew he hated it just as much.
“STAY AWAY FROM ZORO!” Nika thrashed, his entire body jerking violently against his restraints. His legs kicked out furiously, as if it could break him free. “IF YOU HURT HIM, I’LL MAKE YOU REGRET IT!"
Doflamingo let out another low, satisfied laugh.
“Oh? You don’t seem to be in much of a position to make threats.” Doflamingo said gleefully. “You should be more worried about him hurting you.”
With a flick of his wrist Zoro’s hands moved against his will.
His fingers curled around the hilts of his swords. His body obeyed the pull of the strings, slowly unsheathing his blades. Metal scraped against metal until both swords gleamed cold in the starlight. The edges aimed directly at Nika.
Zoro’s heart twisted. His hands shook from the sheer rage bubbling in his chest. How dare this God force Zoro’s blades against his Sun God. Even if Zoro knew these weapons couldn’t harm Nika, the very disrespectful act of pointing them at him was enough to make Zoro’s blood boil.
Nika’s expression darkened.
“You’re really pissing me off!” Nika snapped at Doflamingo.
Doflamingo tilted his head back with a mocking laugh.
“Really now! I can’t believe you’d get so angry over a mortal like this. Such a creature is hardly even fit to use as a toy for amusement,” Doflamingo jeered, hardly bothered by the seething words thrown his way. He waved a hand dismissively, sending another sharp pull through Zoro’s restraints. “More than anything, I find it unusual that a God would bother to keep a beast like this close.”
Nika ground his teeth. “Zoro is not a beast!”
Doflamingo’s smirk only deepened.
“Isn’t he, though?” Doflamingo took a step forward, circling Zoro. His sharp gaze gleamed with cruel amusement as he looked the swordsman up and down, as if he were less than human. “He claims to be loyal to you, even going as far as to follow you around like a well trained mutt, and then what does he do?”
His fingers twitched.
Zoro’s arms swung, his swords lashed out in a deadly arc, blades gleaming in the dim light, cutting through empty air.
Zoro’s stomach turned. He was a puppet, forced to perform against his will.
Doflamingo laughed at his obvious distress, reveling in the way Zoro’s face twisted with revulsion at his own movements.
“He strikes you. Wounds you. Leaves a mark upon your Celestial face.” The blonde practically sang, delighting in the fury that burned in Nika’s eyes.
A fresh wave of nausea roiled in Zoro’s gut as the words sank in. No. He’d never meant to hurt Nika. He wanted to stop this, to swipe that smirk from the God’s face, but Doflamingo’s voice continued to slither through the air like poison.
“Such intense feelings burn in this one towards you, Sun God.” His tone was sickly sweet, like a twisted lullaby, meant to soothe and shatter all at once.
Zoro paled, his heart dropping into the pit of his stomach.
This God had been in his head.
The God of Nightmares intended to bare Zoro’s secret to Nika, to unravel everything!
A protest fought to claw its way out of his throat, but the moment his mouth parted, the strings tightened. The words choked off before they could even form. Held captive by the strings that held him prisoner. Just as he couldn’t move his body, he found that he couldn’t even speak.
All Zoro could do was watch in silent horror as Doflamingo wove his trap.
“Feelings?”
It was such an innocent question, yet asked towards such a despicable being. Yet, Zoro knew by that twisted smile that Doflamingo hardly intended any well being with his answers.
“Yes, feelings. Do you not understand, Sun God? Can’t you figure out what kind of feelings it could be that would lead this mortal to strike you down himself?!”
No… NO!
That was wrong!
Zoro’s entire body screamed to move. To shake his head, to deny it, but the strings held firm. He was trapped.
“Zoro didn’t attack me on purpose! That was you!” Nika argued, shaking his head furiously. “You made him do that!”
“Can you really be so sure?” Doflamingo crooned, clearly goading the other God to the wrong impression. Zoro saw the flicker of doubt in Nika’s eyes. Doflamingo saw it too, and pounced. “Humans are liars. They look to us to fix their wretched little lives, and turn on us when things don’t go their way. Has that not happened to you more than once, especially recently?”
So many half truths and lies spilled effortlessly from the God’s lips, and Zoro so furiously, so fearfully, wanted to fight them, deny them, anything at this point! It was cruel, and so purposely woven in just the right way to really tear at Nika’s worries.
Zoro needed Nika to know that he wasn't hated!
The Sun God looked so furious, so hurt, and yet Zoro could see doubts starting to burrow their way into Nika's heart. It was such a devastating thing to see, and Zoro longed to hold Nika, to assure Nika that he genuinely held no hostility towards him.
Zoro’s jaw tensed as he fought against the strings.
“N-Nika…” Zoro rasped, forcing the words out. “Don’t… listen…”
Doflamingo yanked on the strings, causing Zoro to collapse.
His knees hit the ice with a painful crack, his swords slipped from his hands, clattering uselessly beside him.
The sound seemed to snap Nika out of his spiraling thoughts. His expression twisted, not with doubt, but anguish.
Doflamingo tutted disapprovingly. He loomed over Zoro, casting his shadow over him as if to physically press him into submission.
“Know your place.” The God sneered. His voice dipped lower in condescension. “You do not get to speak in the presence of Gods. You don’t get to address us when such blasphemous thoughts consume your mind.”
Zoro’s chest heaved, his eyes squeezing shut. He prayed to no one in particular that Doflamingo wouldn’t reveal more.
With a dismissive turn, he stepped away from Zoro, his attention returning to Nika.
“I don’t like getting my hands dirty if I can help it,” Doflamingo mused, his tone almost conversational. He stepped over Zoro to creep closer to Nika. “Even when I wanted my father dead, I convinced Lucci to do the job for me.”
Zoro’s eyes snapped open.
His own father?
Shock rippled through him, but it was nothing compared to the sheer devastation in Nika’s expression.
“The God of Death is dead?!” Nika questioned in disbelief.
“Ironic, isn’t it?” Doflamingo laughed. “But it was necessary.”
The God of Nightmares crept even closer, his smirk sharpening.
“I could have had an easy route to Ascension if he hadn’t thrown away his status.” Doflamingo’s voice turned venomous, his calm façade cracking with resentment. “Instead, he forced me to live beneath the very creatures we Gods look down upon while you took his place.” His smile completely vanished, twisting into a snarl. “MY PLACE.”
Nika’s hands clenched at his sides. His entire form trembled.
“You bastard…” Nika growled. “I never wanted to be considered for Ascension!”
Doflamingo’s lips pulled back, baring dangerously sharp canines, his cool demeanor shattering.
“YET YOU ACCEPTED IT!” Doflamingo’s voice boomed with seething rage. “You took what was rightfully mine while I was left to rot in the Underworld, surrounded by death and sulfur and filth!”
His rage bled into the atmosphere, crackling like a storm about to break. His chest heaved, his fingers twitching at his sides, as if barely restraining the power surging beneath his skin. His pink feathers billowed unnaturally around him, shifting like living shadows as his darkness seeped into the air.
“I came here to end this.” Doflamingo spat. “To see you slaughtered by your own disciple before I take the blessed weaponry for myself!”
Doflamingo’s gaze flickered downward toward the swords at Zoro’s knees. His expression dropped.
“Where is the blessed sword?!” The God’s sneer turned to confusion.
Zoro’s eyes flickered to Nika, only to see him shifting, curling over Wado protectively.
Doflamingo his gaze and saw.
With an exasperated sigh, the God of Nightmares yanked his arm back, dragging Nika toward him. The ice groaned beneath him, cracks forming in his wake as the Sun God’s body scraped across the frozen river, a trail of icy dust left in his path.
“I don’t understand how someone as stupid as you has survived this long.” Doflamingo sneered, pulling Nika closer and closer until he loomed over him entirely.
Nika gritted his teeth, thrashing against the unseen force, but the more he struggled, the stronger Doflamingo’s hold seemed to become.
The God stomped. The impact sent a sharp crack through the air as Doflamingo’s boot drove into Nika’s chest, pinning him down against the ice.
A strangled sound tore from Nika’s throat, his body arching against the force. He tried to brace, to lift his chest against the crushing weight, but Doflamingo only pressed down harder, grinding him into submission.
Zoro’s vision went red. Heat surged through his veins, scorching through his limbs with a fury so consuming, it burned.
“I’ll be taking what’s mine.” Doflamingo bent low, reaching for Wado.
That sight… that unbearable sight ignited something in Zoro that turned his blood molten.
It was fury.
It was instinct.
It was unacceptable!
A roar tore from Zoro’s throat, hoarse and raw, until his lungs were emptied of air. He wrenched against the threads binding him, his entire body straining with enough force to send fresh blood dripping from where they dug into his skin. He didn’t care. The pain didn't matter. He refused to watch. He refused to let Doflamingo touch them.
Nika.
Wado.
Not a single filthy finger of his was allowed near them!!!
The wind howled, twisting unnaturally around Nika.
Before Doflamingo could close his fingers around Wado’s hilt, the sword moved.
No one had touched her. No hand had drawn her from her sheath… and yet, she slipped free, faster than the eye could follow. In one perfect motion, she cut.
The strings that bound Nika snapped, unbinding him from the hold.
Nika didn’t hesitate. He rolled free in an instant, fist flying, and with all the wrath of the Sun itself, he drove his knuckles straight into Doflamingo’s jaw.
The God of Nightmares staggered back, his threads dissolving into nothing.
Zoro lunged.
In one fluid motion, he seized his fallen swords, rolling to his feet just as Nika did the same. Without exchanging a single word, they both moved in tandem, their bodies reacting as if they had fought side by side for years.
Doflamingo recovered quickly. His sneer returned, eyes bulging in anger.
Zoro and Nika advanced, ready to strike.
Doflamingo’s hands shifted. In an instant, his fingers morphed into clawed paws, covered in golden fur.
He swiped.
A shock-wave of force slammed into Zoro and Nika, forcing them both to skid backward across the ice.
Zoro’s eyes widened in recognition.
Those claws. That shape. That power.
“Those are the stupid Cat God’s abilities!” Nika barked in disbelief. His lips curled into a frown. “How the hell did you get them?!”
Doflamingo rose to his full height, rolling his shoulders as his transformed hands flexed. His grin stretched impossibly wide.
“Power is easy to come by,” he drawled, “if you have the guts to take it.”
Zoro’s grip tightened around his swords.
That wasn’t just stolen power. That was Lucci’s power.
“You killed him.” Zoro felt stunned.
“Lucci was weak.” Doflamingo scoffed, eyes flashing. “Weak for running. Weak for losing. He was undeserving of the powers of a hunter.”
His claws gleamed.
“As you can see,”  Doflamingo continued, stepping forward, “I put it to much better use. Hunting you down myself.”
Heat curled off Nika’s skin. Steam hissed where it met the ice, rising in ghostly wisps around his feet. His expression darkened, his eyes burning like twin embers.
“You’ve always manipulated other Gods,” Nika spat, he was shaking like he was ready to explode. “Always acted like you were above everyone else. But now you’ve gone too far!”
Nika suddenly moved forward at a speed that Zoro could barely see. One moment, Nika stood still, the next, he was a blazing force. A streak of fire that struck with the speed of an oncoming solar flare, fire licking at his skin.
However, Doflamingo’s new feline speed let him dodge the onslaught effortlessly, his body twisting and bending with an almost sickening ease. The golden claws gleamed as he moved, weaving between Nika’s attacks like a shadow slipping through cracks of light.
Zoro’s heart pounded.
Doflamingo wasn’t just a threat. He wasn’t just cruel.
He was a monster, starving for power.
He needed to be ended.
Zoro tore his gaze away from the fight, scanning the battlefield. His eyes darted across the ice, past the splintered cracks and the curling frost, until he found Wado. Her white hilt stood out against the battlefield, lying in the center of a gray patch where the ice was at its thinnest.
Zoro ran to her.
The moment his foot hit the ice, the world tilted. The frozen river buckled beneath him, cracking like brittle glass. He forced himself to stay balanced, weight shifting with each step as he sprinted toward her.
His breath came in sharp, burning huffs. His limbs felt too heavy, his coat dragging against his movements, but he didn’t stop.
The ice moaned in protest beneath him. It was too thin. Too unstable.
Zoro didn’t slow down.
At the last second, he threw himself forward, diving into a slide. His body skimmed across the frozen surface, the cold searing against his skin, but he ignored it. He reached, his fingers closed around Wado’s hilt.
“AGH!”
Zoro’s head snapped up. Relief barely had time to register before that strangled choke broke through the battlefield.
Nika was pinned beneath Doflamingo, his body struggling against the other’s weight pressing down on him. Nika’s hands pushed back against the one golden-clawed hand wrapped around his throat.
Doflamingo’s other claw was raised, ready to strike the final blow.
NO!
Zoro moved, or tried to, but the ice cracked. It was too unstable. Nika was too far. He’d never reach them in time. There was no way to block the attack!
Unless…
His gaze darted downward. The cracks. The craters. The fractures running like veins through the ice. This battlefield had lasted longer than it should have, but Zoro would ensure it wouldn’t last another second.
Zoro tightened his grip on Wado. Then, with all his strength, he plunged her into the ice.
A sharp crack rang out.
The frozen surface shuddered beneath him. Splinters raced outward from the point of impact. The cracks widened in a chorus of sharp snapping bursts, until all at once, the river gave way.
A deafening whoosh roared through the air as the ice shattered, the frozen world beneath them breaking open.
Gallons of water rushed free like an unchained beast.
Zoro barely had time to suck in a breath before the current swallowed him whole.
It was so cold, not only that, it was suffocating. Blinding. It pushed all of the air from his lungs.
The world was nothing but an endless sea of white, ice and water mixing into one consuming abyss. Even as the current yanked him downward, even as his limbs numbed and his breath was stolen from his chest, his grip on Wado never loosened.
Wado seemed to pull at him, or perhaps it was the current trying to break her free from his hold, but moments later Zoro’s head broke the surface with her.
Zoro gasped, dragging in a lungful of air that seared as it went down. He twisted, scanning the churning water, calling the name screaming in his mind.
“NIKA!”
He strained to listen, but his own voice barely reached him over the rushing current.
“ZOROOOOOOO!!!!!”
Zoro whipped his head toward the sound.
Nika’s head was barely above the surface, struggling against the merciless pull of the river. He was alive. There was no Doflamingo in sight, but the current was tearing them apart.
Zoro’s stomach dropped. They couldn’t be separated! Not now!
Zoro pushed forward, battling against the surging water, but the heavy fabric of Zoro's coat kept tangling around his legs. He frantically kicked, yet it did no good. The more he fought, the harder the river fought back.
Zoro’s muscles screamed, his limbs growing heavier with each second.
Another wave surged over him, slamming him under.
Cold. Too cold.
It swallowed him whole. His lungs burned. His body screamed as he struggled upward, fighting… clawing… but the damned river wouldn’t let him go.
Everything was heavy.
Everything was white.
Everything…
Nika.
Even as darkness crept in, he could see that reckless, infuriating grin burned into his mind…
Zoro’s back slammed against something solid and rough. The riverbank…
The impact jolted him enough to force him to hold on.  His fingers clawed at the frozen earth, dragging himself onto the shore. Everything was numb. Every breath hurt.
He tried to call out again, but no sound came.
His body refused to move.
He was alone.
Lost.
His world faded to black.

The lost Princess of the ocean - three
Masterlist
Zoro had been tied to a spinning wheel, Nami locked into a cage and you were strapped into an old electric chair. Zoro was fighting against his restraints as he and Nami argued. Nami produced a lock pick from her sock and started working on the cage lock. A scream from the arena had you and Zoro locking eyes.
“Work faster.” He demanded of Nami. You were trying to keep your breath steady, though panic was bubbling up inside you and silent tears dropped down your face. You didn't want to go back to where you were before, but you knew Buggy would use you as a bargaining tool the moment he realises who you are. You would be back in the hold of the white shadow assassins by tomorrow.
The sound of a unicycle finally breaks your eye contact with Zoro as a pirate cycled into the room. He dropped the cycle beside you on the floor.
“Remember me?” He glared at Zoro
“No.” Zoro grunts. The pirate punches him in the gut.
“I've been thinking about you for years. About how you killed my brother.” He announced.
“I killed a lot of pirates.” Zoro is keeping his eyes very much away from yours.
“My name is Cabaji, and a couple of years ago, you hunted us across the Goa Kingdom.
Followed us for weeks through the swamp lands, day and night, never relenting, like some kind of demon.” Cabaji explains.
“Still not ringing a bell.” Zoro taunted him.
“You cut off his head and you stuffed it in a bag, all for a few Berry.” Cabaji was angry now.
Zoro sighs, glancing momentarily to you.
“Okay, that does sound like me.” There was both amusement and shame in his words.
“Let's see if you can keep your head.” Cabaji spun the wheel, producing knives from his belt and began to throw them at the wheel.
“Leave him alone!” You call out. It was the first time Nami had heard your voice and she gasped at you. Cabaji turned, a grin pulling at his lips.
“Oh I see, the pirate hunter has a bodyguard. Maybe I should focus on you for a while.” He leans over you, running a knife down your face, it's cold against your skin.
“Stop!” Zoro demands as the wheel finally slows to a stop. Cabaji looks back to him with a wicked smile. He rounds the chair grabbing your chin and pulling your head back so his knife can press against your throat. You were used to these threats and so you kept your cool, staying utterly still.
“Maybe I'll keep you both alive for a while, let you watch as I make your little dove’s death a long slow torture.”
Zoro's nostrils flared and his jaw muscles flexed below his flesh. Cabaji moves his eyes to you, looking into your eyes. The small birthmark on your hairline caught his attention. “Oh.” He grins.
“If you hurt her it will be your death that is slow.” Zoro growls out the words from deep in his chest.
Cabaji removes the knife from your neck, a small trickle of blood drips down to your chest. He moves closer to Zoro once more.
“You know, I'm gonna enjoy this. As soon as Captain Buggy's finished with you, you're mine.” he growls.
“Uh, tempting as that sounds, I'm not sticking around.” Zoro quips.
“Really? Got somewhere else to be?” The pirate asks.
“Didn't used to think so but people changed that.” Zoro fights to look toward the arena and not at you.
“That simpleton in a straw hat. Don't tell me you actually believe in him?” Cabaji narrowed his eyes.
“I don't need to. He believes in himself. It rubs off.”
Cabaji laughs incredulously.
“And one more thing don't turn around.”
Nami's foot smacked into Cabaji’s chest as he turned to her, sending him flying forward. The rope at Zoro's wrist snaps under the strain of a knife against it and he wraps his arm around Cabaji's neck. Cabaji loses consciousness. Nami quickly cuts the other wrist before running over to you and cutting the ropes from your wrists and ankles. She darts across the room grabbing her things from the table. Zoro quickly picked up his swords and replaces the belt around his waist. His hand reached out for your neck, wiping the blood.
“Okay?” He asks. You nod and he takes your hand once more. “What's the plan?” He turns to Nami. “You do have a plan, right? That's your thing, plans.”
Nami smiles,
“I say we beat the hell out of every clown we see.”
The fight is fast, Luffy, Nami and Zoro work as though they choreographed a dance eventually trapping several parts of Buggy in separate trucks and barrels. As they faught you grabbed the young captive and pulled him out of the way.
Luffy freed the locals from their shackles and soon you were all heading back to the ship. You walked beside Nami.
“So you do have a voice.” She giggles as you both climb onto the Sloop. You give her a shy smile and shrug, your eyes darting back to Zoro who was waiting for Luffy on the dock. Nami shrugged.

“Hmm? What is it? amor?”
“How do you get rid of unwanted guests?”
“Turn the broom upside down.” you told him as you were giving the food offerings to your spirits.
“Do they eat that?” He puffs out the smoke
“Mhm. look I promise if it was luffy. It wouldn’t have stayed this fresh. there’s lots of crumbs see.” You point and he’s in amazement.
When he placed the broom upside down in the kitchen. he saw luffy run away! Sanji ran back to you and shower you with his love.
- he always watched you afar doing your rituals, he didn’t want to bother you nor want you to lose your focus.
-“ here’s some fruit. I don’t know if your ancestors will like it.” when he left it on there. He just placed it there as a way to introduce himself.

- “Y/n chwan! YOU have a gift for me?!!” He’s in shock and he’s in love. His eyes will pop out of his sockets shape into hearts.
- “Yes let me put it on you.” you’d kiss his wrist making a cross on his wrist with a oil blend you made. then tied the bracelet on his right wrist.
“If it breaks, like it just unravels, an eye goes missing, or it just comes off. let me know. Take it off immediately.” He nods like an eager puppy.
when the bracket broke he didn’t know why he felt so bad poor baby.
“No no honey it’s okay, it just means it was done protecting you. You have people who are jealous of you that’s why.” You hugged him and explained the concept of mala de ojo (evil eye).
- He was in such great shock to find out how he felt better when he wore the bracelet he felt less stressed. He could sleep peacefully.

“Have the spirits had their refreshments!?”
“Please keep my all blue safe. healthy and well.”
- If you’re a devotee to La señora Guadalupe he’s going to give her roses, cookies and water. And some wine. he’ll offer her something light and clean. He’ll go all out for her (I feel like he’s more familiar with her, than other ones)
- he switches out La Virgens space in your altar. Because you know how you can’t organize it.

notes: This was a request from @vemuabhi! <3 Very special because it was my first ever request! I wanted to doge the obvious path (which I almost took) and do something that didn´t involve Whole Cake Island, so maybe it is not the biggest angst (hats off to Mr. Oda cause he is Father angst) but I did my very best! I hope you all enjoy and Happy Birthday, Sanji-kun! <3
Tumblr media
𝕃𝕖𝕒𝕧𝕖 𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕤, 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕥𝕤, 𝕠𝕣 𝕘𝕠𝕠𝕕 𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤!
Tumblr media
Do you remember when you were a kid, and you´d find a shell laying on the sand? And you would pick it up and put it on your ear, hoping to listen to the ocean? It´d always make a smile grow on your face before you tossed it aside and jumped into the water.
That time was different. When you heard the ocean share its endless secrets and tell its adventurous stories, you just wanted to sit there all day and listen.
This specific event happened a couple of months after you joined the Strawhats. Chopper had borrowed you his stethoscope cause you thought it was cool, and in the middle of thousands of things you´ve already heard in your life, good and bad, the heartbeat was something that you were oblivious to.
Some would think that asking to hear someone else´s heartbeat was weird, but inside the Thousand Sunny... well, those guys put ¨weird¨ on another level, and you would have to work your ass off to surpass that.
Chopper got all blushed when you leaned closer to his tiny and furry torso, Usopp told you stories about a war he once won but had to have his heart replaced by a lion´s, Franky said that if you wanted to see a heart he could simply pull it out for you, Brook invested on the same ¨Oh, I don´t have a heart. Yohohoho¨ joke, Zoro let you listen to his wrist, Nami and Robin almost had you sinking into their generous breasts, and Sanji... you left him for last because you didn´t know how to ask him. So you just tiptoed quietly inside the kitchen, sneaked behind him, and tried to listen to his heart through his back. You feared that your nose would start bleeding if he faced you while you were doing it.
That was exactly what he did, by the way. He poured more water into the stew he was cooking and turned around, putting out his cigarette so ashes wouldn´t fall on you. Immediately you began to sweat, your breath quickened, and hold the stethoscope with a steady hand became a herculean task.
His lean fingers moved to the collar of his blue shirt and started to unbutton a few, enough for you to have better access. At that point, you believed that the reason why you weren´t bleeding yet was that you were slowly having a stroke, and Sanji´s action was God´s gift to you for being a good person while alive.
Then he didn´t do anything else, just put both hands in his pockets and waited while you listened to every single bubble popping inside his chest like you were afraid to miss one. In the end, he tucked a lock of hair behind your ear and went back to his stew.
But that was all about it. The following months were just like any other, the crew kept acting as weird as their minds allowed, and you kept shutting whatever your stupid heart was yelling at you. Although... if you could be honest for one moment, deep down you were hurt.
Maybe you scared or crept him away with your childish curiosity. Maybe he had noticed your feelings for him and got disgusted. Well, not disgusted, he probably didn´t like you the same way and didn´t know how to tell you, so keeping words to a minimum was his way to go.
He stopped singing and twirling around you, he´d rather call your name respectfully; when you shared the night watches, he just remained quiet by your side, answering briefly to your questions or comments; he even stopped trying to sneak into your baths or make suggestive comments - which you didn´t love before, but you know, you only miss something when it's gone.
The whole crew had noticed the change in both of your behaviors, but they too were not sure how to address it. Whenever someone asked something about it you would say ¨Really? I didn´t notice anything.¨. Either too proud to confront him or too afraid of the truth.
~
¨Oi, you ok?¨ Zoro asked, breaking into your personal bubble of sadness.
You knew it was Zoro because you two were taking the night watch, but you didn´t expect him to show interest or concern about your upset state.
The night was chilly, so you were sitting on Sunny´s grass, arms around your knees, holding them close to your chest to keep the warmth.
¨Why do you care?¨ you answered bitterly, but he didn´t mind since he was the king of freaking Bitter Land.
¨I don´t. But I´ll go crazy if I hear you sigh one more time.¨ he sat close to you, not too close, just enough for you to listen to each other.
A chuckle left your mouth involuntarily, you never expected his grouchy temper would come in handy in times like this. Then your frowned expression came back, and you let out another sigh.
Before you realized Zoro had pushed you with his Sandai Kitetsu scabbard, making you fall to your side with a squeak.
¨I told you.¨
You sat again, taking some grass off your leg ¨Yeah. Can´t deny it.¨
¨Yeah, you´ve been doing that a lot lately.¨
He didn´t look like he was teasing you, his eyes focusing on the line where the sky met the ocean, where the stars disappeared and became blurry white brushes on the water.
¨I... I don´t-¨
¨I think you can do better than the stupid cook.¨he kept his usual tone ¨ But I guess we don´t get to choose these things.¨
You were taken aback by his words, and despite you trying to fight your lips from trembling and tears from falling, it was useless. You had been crushing these feelings inside you for too long, and it killed you the more you ignored it.
The swordsman wasn´t saying those things because he loved you or anything like that, but because the entire crew - except for Luffy - had already noticed and began acting weird about it. And despite being the captain´s duty to solve any problem or an uncomfortable situation, your captain was a bit too oblivious, so he had to step in.
Besides, his nakama was getting hurt. He didn´t care about the ero cook.
¨If you want me to beat him up... just let me know.¨
He said it to cheer you up - not that he didn´t mean, he´d do it for much less - but nothing seemed worth smiling for now. You just bit your lip in order to avoid an embarrassing whining, since you were unable to stop the painful tears from rolling down your cheeks.
Everything hurt, and for the first time, you wished to forget what the ocean sounded like.
¨W-What should I do?¨
¨That´s not my problem to solve, Y/N.¨ he stood up beside you ¨But sometimes, when I have a difficult problem that I can´t solve my way...¨ his gaze still locked with the horizon ¨... I think about what my captain would do.¨ he left without any further words, leaving you not only sad but confused as well.
You slept on it for the next couple of days, still not understanding what he meant. Maybe he just wanted to leave the conversation and said whatever came to mind. But even that didn´t fit right. If he didn´t want to be stuck in an uncomfortable conversation, he wouldn´t have started one.
So you took as a personal mission to observe your captain until you learned how to think like him, hoping that figuring that out would solve your problem.
You had joined the crew as a historian, the person responsible for writing down every adventure meticulously, every tiny detail of every battle, and every glorious victory along the Strawhats journey. So in one dusk, when you were in charge of the night watch with Robin and the moon was full and bright, you took your journals and began rolling through the pages, looking for a pattern, something that anticipated every major decision of your captain.
You even borrowed old diaries from the time you were not part of their crew. The stories lacked details, but they served to paint a picture. Basically:
Luffy insults an ugly lady, saves a kid, eats something, finds Zoro, beats the crap out of a crazy marine, saves the day, gets his first crewmate.
Luffy gets eaten by a bird, then vomited in a town, finds Nami, eats something, is put in a cage, beat the crap out of some pirates, saves the day.
Luffy wants a new ship, meets Usopp, eats something, gets thrown from a cliff, beats the crap out of some pirates, saves the day, gets Going Merry and a liar.
Luffy wants a cook, explodes a restaurant, becomes a waiter, eats something, meets Sanji, beats the crap out of some pirates, saves the day, gets a cook.
Luffy eats something, finds the fishmen, goes for a walk, is thrown in the water, beats the crap out of some pirates, saves the day, gets a navigator.
Luffy wants a doctor, eats everything, fights some crazy ass bunnies, climbs a mountain, meets Chopper, beats the crap out of some pirates, saves the day, gets a doctor.
Luffy eats something, wants to fix Going Merry, meets Franky, loses Robin, beats the crap out of some world government agents, saves the day, gets an archeologist, a shipwright, and Thousand Sunny.
Luffy hears a ghoulish singing, finds a speaking skeleton in a busted ship, has his shadow stolen, beats the crap out of some Warlord of the Sea, gets a musician.
When you finished the last journal, the weight of your body pushed you to the floor, and you laid on your back for a couple of minutes, overwhelmed by the amount of information in your head.
¨I know what to do...¨ you took a deep breath ¨... I´m gonna eat something.¨
You mumbled something to Robin, telling her that you´d be back in a few minutes, and wandered to the kitchen.
As soon as you entered the room a sweet and comforting aroma like whipped cream and strawberries invaded your senses, making your head turn to the counter immediately.
¨Y/N-chan...¨ the cook said.
You opened and closed your mouth a couple of times, looked at him, and then to your feet, your fingers fidgeting as a sign of your anxious state.
¨D-Didn't know you were awake.¨ you marched to the table and helped yourself with some sugar cookies.
¨Oh... It won´t take much longer...¨ you heard his muffled voice somewhere in the back of your mind, all you could hear was the blood pumping in your ears ¨... cake because today is my birthday and I thought we...¨ your vision was focused on the cookie jar, crushing the granular biscuit with your fingertips ¨...and I...I didn´t know if-¨
¨What would Luffy do?¨ you whispered to yourself.
¨W-What?¨
¨What would Luffy do?¨
The question wasn´t for him, it was for you. You felt something growing inside your chest, like the blood that pumped in your heart was boiling and burning, giving you the strength and courage you needed.
¨I have been trying to find answers to a lot of things, you know?¨ you stood up to face the cook, palms spread on the table, ¨I ... do you hate me, Sanji?¨
He stopped what he was doing and let the knife rest on the cutting board. When his gaze found yours, there was no way back. That is what Luffy would do. He´d eat something, do whatever came to his mind, and deal with the consequences. No need to go back.
¨Y/N-chan... why do you...¨
¨I mean, I ask this because...¨ you clenched your hands, cursing yourself for feeling the need to cry ¨I can´t take this anymore, Sanji! If I did something to offend you or if I said something...¨ your voice was broken and weak, and you were a mess of tears and sobs ¨You don´t have to love me back, that´s not what I am saying, but... I can´t stand-¨
¨Y/N-chan... why do you think I hate you?¨ he wiped his hands with a towel and made his way towards you, slowly.
¨Oh, come on, Sanji... You treat me differently, you´re cold and distant, you don´t say a word to me even when we share night shifts! If you don´t hate me, then this must be a sick game you´re playing.¨ your legs felt wobbly, and you sat back in the chair, not being able to face him anymore.  The courage and strenght you had minutes ago was gone.
You just watched him get closer and kneel in front of you, his cold fingers gently brushing away the hot tears on your cheeks.
¨I could never hate you, Y/N.¨ he said softly ¨I am sorry I made you feel like this, I am sorry I made you cry...¨ his fingers touched your trembling lips.
¨Then why...¨
¨I didn´t want to scare you away like I always do, Y/N... I know I can be too much sometimes, with the nose bleeding and everything. But that´s how I am, and I didn´t want you to think of me as an idiot... so I prefer being silent, then say something stupid and... ¨
¨You don´t have to say this. I don´t need pity talk...¨you spoke as more tears fell, giving him a chance to take his statement back.
¨I have to, Y/N. But not because of pity talk.¨ he gently pressed his forehead against yours, like bunnies do when they apologize.
¨Then why?¨
¨Because I love you, Y/N.¨ the blonde closed the space left between the two of you, kissing you passionately.
He helped you get up without breaking the kiss and leaned you against the kitchen table, his hands holding your body close while yours ran through his golden hair. His mouth tasted like strawberries and cigarettes, a flavor to which you could easily get addicted.
You parted the kiss just enough to get some oxygen, your noses were touching, and you could feel his heavy breathing against your skin.
¨I didn´t know today is your birthday...¨ you whispered, afraid that this was a dream and you´d wake up alone again.
¨Yeah, I was hoping to get a Happy Birthday from you, you know.¨ he chuckled.
¨I think you´ll be getting more than that.¨
You stared into each other´s eyes for a moment before he pulled you to a hug. When you leaned against his warm chest you heard it again, the same babble of the ocean, only this time you smiled, knowing that it wanted to listen to your stories and secrets as well.
¨Sanji?¨
¨Hm?¨
¨Happy Birthday... I love you.¨
¨I love you too, Y/N.¨ he kissed you again.
¨Please, don´t have sex on the dinner table.¨ you jumped when Robin spoke.
When you turned, you saw all your crewmates dressed in pajamas and messy hair staring back at you with sparkly sleepy eyes. You spot Zoro back in the crowd, you smiled and gave him a silent ¨Thank you.¨. You couldn´t help but wonder how the guy who manages to gets lost walking down a straight path was able to guide some sense into you.
In any way, you´ve found it. Inside of his chest, inside of his heart was the All Blue you heard so much of. Maybe that was the thing with it, and why only a few people found it. Everyone assumes that it is a place, where the four Blues meet, but it´s easy to forget that when you´re a pirate the ocean becomes the essence of who you are.
Little did you know that Sanji had found his All Blue too.

Happy Valentines Day Everyone!
A/N : I was listening to I need you by BTS (Clickable). It gives the love vibes. Do listen to it if you want to! You wont regret it. the feels are just everyting!
Tumblr media
Note: in this Story it can be with any one piece boy you wish for. It can be Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Ussop, Law, Sabo, Ace, Killer, Kidd, anyone you admire. anyone you like. for some charecters it maybe OOc but, I tried to make it as close to them as possible. It will be in his POV
“This is in His POV”
As the sun rays hit my eyes, I slowly open my eyes. I grunt as I rolled to the other side of the bed. I took a deep breath and as the usual morning routine I bring my wrist close to my eyes and see what is going to happen to my soulmate today. It said, “Falls down while taking a walk and takes the attention of the complete crowd”.
Most of the times it is small normal everyday life stuff. Once it was, “Studying for Test all night”, for which I felt Super proud and other time it was “Crying because messed the exam”, on that day I was also sad because they were crying and did hard work. Once it was “being called names” and other time was, “Moving away from that place”. Not gonna lie, I was furious because they had to go through bullying.
Most of my mood depends on how my soulmate is doing that day. If I see that they are happy and cosy, I feel happy. If they are sad because of someone, I get super angry. If they are depressed, I feel sad. But yes… I fell in love with them without even noticing. I know neither their name nor face. But I do know one thing for sure. I got one hell of a person. They are amazing and I’d love them no matter what. I’m pretty sure they also like me. Because sometimes I read that they were depressed and crying because of the injuries and problems I was having. Well they could also read what was happening to me because it’s how the world is. In those times I do feel relieved and happy because they do care about me and my heart fills with that fuzzy feeling.
I let out a chuckle as I read todays happening. I know it’s wrong to laugh when someone falls down but… I couldn’t help it. “So adorable”, I say to myself as I looked at my wrist and kiss the sentence. Then I lazily woke up from the bed and continued my routine for the day.
After lunch my buddy asked me, “Man… you sure are smiling today. Something happened?” I nodded and said, “It’s just that my soulmate will be super embarrassed today, so I can’t help but laugh”. He chuckled and we talk about the upcoming works to do. That night I go to my bed and plop myself on it. I think about how my soulmate is as I smile and sleep.
The next day I see that, “Getting a crush on the new boy next door”…. ‘Wait what? Did I read it correctly?’ I thought to myself as I reread the sentence for at least 10 times. ‘Oh lord… Imma kill that jerk’, I say to myself.
I know that crushes don’t last long and yeah I know that my soulmate loves me but…. what the hell?! I can’t allow that! “IF I SEE THAT JERK IMMA BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HIM”, I scream out loud making the people around me give me the weird look. I am so much pissed today that even the smallest things are pissing me off… ‘Is he that handsome?’, I thought to myself as I run my fingers through my hair. ‘Oh lord this jealousy doesn’t suit me. I hate this feeing’, I thought as I continued being moody for the rest of the day. I couldn’t sleep properly that night so I just stare at the night sky and keep thinking about them as I pout. I look at my wrist and whisper, “I am the only one for you. Get it to your head you idiot”.
I kept looking at my wrist and then I feel a slight sting on my wrist and I continued looking at it. Then I see that a new sentence was being formed. I have seen it many times but every time this happens it makes me so excited like a small baby. It is so magical. I read the new sentence on the wrist and blush hard. ‘Damn it’, I think to myself as I cover my face with my hand. I then again open my eyes and look at my wrist and read the sentence. ‘Continuing to be super happy because Soulmate is jealous’. I chuckle reading that sentence as my cheeks still remained pink. ‘So happy that Im jealous huh.. you little... tsk... still cute though.... Well at least now I know that you are smiling because of me’. I say and plop onto my sheets and close my eyes with a smile still lingering on my face.
After some days of normal peaceful happy days, with me and my soulmate being cheerful, I go to a new island with my buddies. It was a bright beautiful day. We explore the island, eat food and drink alcohol. Just like that the day was close to over and I was alone, walking in a park with the night sky beautifully lit with stars. Then I felt a slight sting on my wrist. I look at it waiting for the words to appear. Then, I see the words that I never expected but was waiting for the most to show up on my skin. I almost forget to breathe when I look at those words. My eyes wide open and heart beating faster than ever.
‘Meeting Soulmate’, was written on it. My eyes couldn’t believe what they were seeing. I take deep breaths and sit on the bench beside me. I was speechless. I was amazed by this. ‘but.. how am I going to recognise them? how are they going to react when they see me? Would they even like a person like me, who always gets into fights? who has lots of scars.. would they accept me? what if they reject me?’, insecurities build up with in my heart. ‘Or worst… what would happen if we don’t even recognise each other?’, I couldn’t keep my thoughts in control. the only thing Mattered was them. ‘I'll search for you. I'll confess to you. no matter how you look, no matter what your gender or pronouns are, I will try my best to find you’, I say to myself and run around the island. That was a sleepless night. I ran around all the places to find them. Asked many peoples if they were meeting their soulmate that day, but every single time I got the same response.
“No, I’m sorry”, said the person whom I just asked.
‘Where are you?’, I thought and continue to search for them. it was already evening, but I couldn’t find them. The complete day, I didn’t feel like stopping for even a second. But now…. I got to the same park again after running around the island. I had no luck finding them. ‘Where are you?’, I thought as I again sit on the same bench as yesterday… all alone still... ‘Did you see me but didn’t like me? Do you like someone else? If you did I’d know by now… where can I find you? Where are you?’, I placed my hand on my head and my elbow on my knees. ‘Did I not notice you even though we met?’, I thought some of the worst case scenarios as my tears began to fall down my cheek. I couldn’t help but sob silently. I was immersed in my thoughts then I saw a person crouch down before me with a kerchief in their hand. “Sorry to ask this when you are crying but, are you by any chance looking for your soulmate?”, they asked. I.. I was speechless so, I just showed my wrist to them, and they smiled and showed me theirs, it said, ‘Meeting your fated in the park’.
I didn’t know what to say. It was the first time I saw those shiny bright eyes and beautiful face. That was my soulmate. They got up and wiped my tears then, they said, “I’ve been waiting to meet you for a long time.”
That moment, I lost my control. I swiftly got up and pulled them into my arms. I buried my head in the crook of their neck and nodded. I felt their arms wrap around me as they rubbed soothing circles on my back. “I love you”, I confessed as they gasped.
I continued, “I know… I don’t even know your name. But… I love you. I love every single thing about you. Your kindness, your nature, your behaviour. I love how you are passionate about small things. The way you jam to the music everyone thinks is weird. The way you still be strong even after being bullied. I admire them so much. Those little traits of yours are mesmerising.", I stop and snif, then continue, "I never saw the guy who lives next door to you but I hate him with all my heart”. Then for the first time, they let out a very adorable giggle. ‘Oh... music to my ears when you laugh’, I thought.
Then we slowly pull apart. I see that their cheeks are flushed pink which was also too cute. They slowly reach up to my hand and kiss the place where the writing was making me blush. Because.. I do that many times and now, they kisses my wrist. They look into my eyes and said, “I also love you”. this made my heart flutter with happiness.
They sat down on the bench and I too obliged. We talked about all the things that we wanted to talk about and trust me my heart was about to burst when they leaned on my shoulder and continued talking with me. Thank you for being my soulmate, Y/N.
XOXOXOXOXO
I hope you enjoyed it! Happy Valentines Day! Celebrate your valentine's day with One piece boys!

After reading the Killer story, I really want to request this: Killer accidentally cheating on reader and reader finds out while they are at it hehe
Drunken double
Hello :) ! It's not Sunday here yet - technically yes.. it's after midnight, which means that it's Sunday but I didn't sleep yet.. so it doesn't count. It's still Saturday haha.
I really hope you'll like this.. wanted to make it angsty and dramatic but I wasn't sure how much drama or angst is actually wanted in one shots. And the 'hehe' made it seem like you wanted some angst and pain. I always try to interpret stuff :)
- Killer x reader - 1,339 words - married Kid (don't hate me. a bit of change won't hurt. his wive's name is Kira!) - NSFW, drama, drunken Kid, angst (not too intense because I don't know if readers like angst in one shots.)
Tumblr media
Enjoying a long pause from all the gold hunting in the last few days, Killer and the rest of the crew were drinking and singing all night long. Everyone was enjoying themselves and having the best time of their lives. They were close to finding the One Piece but realized that there were a lot of treasures to steal and collect, after the Straw Hats had accidentally mentioned seeing a castle filled with gold. Killer had been drinking more than usual but that was because Kid felt the need to battle him in a drinking game again. This time he had felt more confident than before but he forgot that it was easier to get drunk while drinking through a straw than normally. He had already felt dizzy but still won the drinking contest, which was all about a golden bracelet. Kid wanted to give it to his wife but now Killer had won it for his girlfriend. You. After many hours, Killer spotted you standing at the doorway, pointing with your index finger at him and then motioning him to follow you. Killer didn't need to see you do this twice. He immediately stood up, the bracelet in his hand, and stumbled into your direction. Killer didn't realize how fast you two made it into his private cabin but he didn't care. The only thing he realized was that you were wearing a new perfume today. It confused Killer but he didn't mind it for now. He would definitely ask you about your sudden switch the next morning. While his erection got suddenly all the attention, Killer took a deep breath and leaned against the wall, trying to hold himself up. When he had felt your hand on his stomach, Killer put the bracelet around your wrist and sighed happy. It felt good to see you wearing it. His sight was way too blurry but he realized that your hair was falling differently over your shoulder when you eyed the bracelet. Killer was about to lift your head up, just to see into your beautiful (e/c) eyes but stopped when you took out his hardened member and began licking and sucking on it. Little pears of excitement landed on your tongue and Killers breathing became heavier at that sight. His hand grabbed your head after you kept teasing him for too long and pulled you softly closer to take him in completely. You two have been playing this game for too long every time but he was impatient today. Feeling you sucking on it, deepthroating it as good as possible, Killer leaned his head against the wall, not believing how this felt. He blamed the alcohol for feeling you pleasuring him differently but he didn't want to say anything to ruin the mood. "Get up, my love.", Killer looked down to you and helped you stand up, turning you around to your favorite position. He stepped to the side and pulled you with him to a small shelf. Killer pushed your torso down softly until you leaned down onto the shelf, and pulled up your skirt. "I see.. someone has bought a new skirt for me to enjoy.", Killer smiled a bit and just remembered to take off the mask. He threw it onto the bed and leaned forward again, grabbing your nape carefully and in the way you love it. It surprised him to not see you wear any clothes, especially because you were outside, but Killer was sure that this was just for him to feel more teased. His fingers went down carefully to your folds, making sure you were ready for him, and when he felt how wet you were, he got even more excited. Not being able to wait any longer, Killer placed himself right in between you and filled you fully but very slowly. The moans filled the room, Killers lust for you grew and he began thrusting in harder. His pleasure filled Killer's whole body and his orgasm was slowly building up. "Are you sure that he's in here?", a known voice appeared from outside. Killer suddenly froze. No.. what.. He would recognize that voice from thousand miles away. The door suddenly opened. Silence. A gasp filled the room and a heartbreaking tone of you crying followed right after. "No.. I..", Killer looked down at the woman, smiling at Killer. He had to blink many times, really fast.. until he saw the unknown face looking back at
him. His anger grew, his desperation drew him crazy and the sound of your pain killed him. "Oh my God, Killer!", Kira's voice distracted his mind for a quick second. He looked down to his hands, covered in blood now. "The fuck is going on here?!", Kid appeared behind his wife, still drunk as hell, and hIs eyes widened at the sight of Killer getting his, now not erected, member out of a freshly beheaded woman. Some other crewmates wanted to see what was going on but Kira threw them all out onto the deck again, while Kid stayed back with you and Killer. "HOW COULD YOU?!", you screamed at him. You weren't sure what to say or think but you knew one thing for sure. You have never felt this much pain in your life. He was sleeping with another woman. He betrayed you. The most loyal man you've ever met. He betrayed you.. Your sight became blurry because your tears have already been covering your face and you weren't fast enough to wipe them away. "(Y/N).. I.. (Y/N) please.. I didn't see.. I was drunk..-" "Man.. Killer.. how could you sleep with a woman, who has no head.. You should better hide her before (Y/N) sees this.. she's gonna-", Kid didn't even manage to finish his sentence. Kira pushed him out of the way immediately, cursing him for being an idiot, and turned to you. "(Y/N) let's go into the kitchen. You need to sit down.", she tried to calm you down but you just shook your head. "No.. I need to know why.." "I didn't intend to! I never even look at another woman, (Y/N)!", Killer took a deep breath and put on some pants. He didn't even care about his mask. The only thing he cared about was you. Not losing you, calming you down, holding you and begging you for forgiveness. Only you. "So you were drinking again, you idiot. Look what your games have done!", Kira whispered to Kid and pushed him into the bedroom to make him shut up from saying any other dumb comment. You looked short at Kira and her husband, having their usual fights and wondering if you'd ever end up like them. "(Y/N).. please..", Killers eyes were filled with regret and tears were appearing at the corner of his eyes. "No.. I trusted you.. I don't care if you were drunk.. you touched another woman..", you were only able to whisper, still not believing that you were saying these words out loud. It felt too surreal. Killer took a step forward only to stop again after you've lifted your hand to show him not to move. "We're over..", were the last words he had heard from you before you left without ever turning back. -- Two years have passed since that incident and Killer couldn't help but still think about you. Any time he had nothing to do, listened to Kid and his wife or just watched a couple laughing happily together, he couldn't stop thinking about the times you two had spend with each other. Killer tried to contact you, make you trust him again and believe him but had to give up after seeing you with someone else. Roronoa Zoro. He was the one you were holding now. He was the one, who was allowed to kiss you and satisfy all your needs. Listen to your stories and laugh with you. It wasn't Killer anymore. His heart was shattered and his will to live, barely existent.

law and robin brotp fanfic excerpt
Again, from a longer darker multi-chaptered piece, though the excerpt isn’t dark. The below is a T-rating at the most. The fic isn’t though, so I won’t link. This is a post-canon world where Luffy is the pirate king. Law is recovering at Robin’s from Doflamingo menace. Benn is a lawyer in this post-canon world. The content fairly light. The Franky joke is an ongoing thing throughout this story. This scene is set before the (platonic) lawbin I posted previously. Enjoy (but excuse the shitty graphics. Sorry).
Tumblr media
It was just as well she knew him so well. He smelled of grass, sun and the aftertaste of fear; the sting of anger, and the warmth of protection as the neighbour's two year old dog snuggled into the crook of his arm and rested his snout on his chest.
The dog lifted his head and sneezed twice, spraying Robin with canine snot, before lowering his jaw flat onto Law again.
Robin was pushed up against Law's shoulder on the grass. He'd shambled her there as she'd stepped out to hang clothes on the line, deciding to do it herself rather than using her fruit. Now her fruit was busy though, sorting through the pegs, and colour-coding them to the garments. She should've just engaged it in the first place. The work ethic was overrated.
"He's sorry," Law said, scritching the pup's hard head.
Robin looked across at the dog, so at ease on the surgeon's chest, so unaware that there was anything wrong with sneezing all over her.
"No he's not."
Law smiled into the sun.
"And neither are you," she added.
Law loosened his jaw. He couldn't get too warm on this day. As much sun as he soaked up, he needed more.
"Comfortable there, Nico-ya?" He freed his arm from between them, the other loosely on the pup, and folded it around her shoulders. "You find my company distasteful?"
"What would Franky say?" she asked. Law's shirt had the faint scent of cigarettes. He smoked when he was stressed, otherwise he preferred rollies packed with leaf. A mild buzz. On occasion.
"Robo-ya and I are in an open relationship," Law murmured. "I don't think he'd mind."
Relief prickled through her like the lawn pushing against her blouse. He still had it. Could still joke, step beyond everything that the media, Doflamingo, his own psyche, damned him by.
"You gonna survive this one, Flevance?"
Law looked up at the sky. A clear beautiful blue, not a cloud in sight. He could be hopeful on days like this. Doflamingo was all about entrance and show. No clouds to lasso eased air flow. "Yeah." The dog let out a small growl as Law changed position. He patted its fur absently.
.
Robin's fruit hands finished hanging the clothes. She set them to work picking up fallen leaves. Dumped them in the garden bag against the fence.
She lifted her fingers to his warm hand draping her shoulder. Inked fingers slinked through her own. "He almost killed you, Law. Being poorly judged by the town when he's ensured you're a pariah seems light punishment."
He ran his thumb over the mound of her wrist. Didn't answer. Doflamingo had almost killed him.  He loosened his grip and sat up, looking down at his friend, her dark hair spread over the grass, a spare hand shielding her eyes from the sun.
"What're you doing lounging down there? Didn't you have work to do?"
"Heh."
Since Law was up the dog was too. He wandered with a far too enthusiastic swing of his tail to Robin and licked her cheek. She sprouted a few hands and held the pup's wriggly hips, the appendage shading her forehead dispersing.
"Don't break his ribs."
As if.
"Whaddya call that hold?"
"Soothing the savage beast." She calmed the dog and Law's lap looked as good as any bed to lie in. It clumsily tripped over and lay down again.
"Sleepy, little fella?" The surgeon flicked the ears, velvet like a tanned animal hide, between his fingers. The dog shook his head in a twitchy muddle.
Robin had seen him tease Bepo the same way.
"Guess I'll run," he said.
She sighed.
"Fight?" He didn't know why he was playing for Robin's approval. He glanced her way a second.
"You shouldn't have to."
"Kill?"
"You have to ask?"
Law leaned backwards, his arms behind him. "I'm a doctor. Really hate taking life."
"Seems you're the only one who remembers that."
Law glanced disinterestedly at his upper arms. "Think it's the tatts that do it? Scream serial killer to you?"
"Murderous thug. Sewer rat. Something like that. Yeah."
"Thieving magpie?"
"You're giving magpies a bad name."
"True, they're beautiful birds." He straightened, ran his thumbnail across a bottom incisor. Liked to reassure himself of the thickness, the tactility of being. "Think I should change careers, assassin?"
"You want to be one or you insulting me?"
"Praising, Nico-ya. I only hang out with the best."
"We'll help, you know. Everyone will help."
"And then when Luffy lets them off with a pardon?"
"Don't talk with your mouthful."
Law removed his thumb, repeated himself. Wiped his hand on his jeans leg.
Ah yeah, maybe not everyone could be redeemed, she thought.
"Legal process?" Law asked.
"Benn?"
"There's few better."
Clutched. Law only imagined that word when he removed hearts and when he'd seen Robin use the technique to break necks. Twinge. Was twinge a better word? Something below the sternum twinged. Benn's cigarette shroud, swaggering flintlock, and easy confidence. His skyrocket intellect. His confidence in Law. He'd been skirting the idea of contacting him.
"Shanks and Benn helped out before." Not that he wanted to drag himself through the cesspit of memory he'd fled to find protection.
Robin knew.  "Law."
"Mmm?" His back was sore. He tipped to his side, head on his elbow, spilling the dog onto the lawn again. It scratched at the ground and ambled next door, back home, tail lazily wagging. Law patted at the dust kicked onto his thigh.
"Remember at Punk Hazard, Caesar squeezing your heart and..."
"Hurt like a motherfucker."
"But you survived it. Pretty easily."
"Hah. You shoulda seen the after-party with Vergo. If Smoker hadn't returned it dunno how things would've gone."
"But you tackled all that, you did all that, your art installation, screwing with Smoker's crew, screwing with our crew, taking on Vergo, without a freaking heart. You sliced up those yeti monsters, got us out of that cage. And it was hollow in here." She tapped her own chest.
"You getting metaphorical on me?"
"You and Zoro are the gold medalists of ennui, we get that. But neither of you are lacking here." She thumped her chest again.
"Neither Zoro nor I are anywhere near as well-endowed." Law rolled onto his back again.
"Fool. You been hanging out with Sanji and Brook?"
"Those nosebleeds of his are fascinating." He placed his hand on his body and felt the steady ba-da-boom behind his bazoomless chest. "There are limits to my powers, but yeah, they're pretty awesome."
"Fight them. Whichever way. Nowadays it doesn't have to be blood and guts. Don't let them get away with it.
"Call Benn."
