Plot Summary:

While investigating the murder of Donald Blackwood, Grey is spirited away to meet a man who may have further information about the series of murders and so comes before a curious Captain. The Captain then leads Grey to a medium who summons the shade of Blackwood before being interrupted by a seeming grown and larger Hyperborean offshoot.

Reading Notes:

(Note: Pagination is solely in reference to the chapter itself and is not indicative of anything within the issue or collections.)

pg. 1 - The follow-up to the murder at the end of last chapter is particularly gruesome as it seems that Blackwood was rather viciously torn apart by the creature.

pg. 2 - It’s interesting that the staging for this somewhat mirrors that of the first chapter, that Grey isn’t really one to stay around the crime scene for very long, being pulled away by one thing or another.

pg. 3-4 - Grey being accosted by the people here on the “bad side of town” and solicited by the prostitutes is humorous. I love how traditionally “repulsive” Ben Stenbeck’s designs are for them.

pg. 5 - Here’s where things get almost downright Dickensian with the introduction of the Captain. I love this kind of somewhat sinister, yet otherwise genial, larger than life character that seems to know everything and be capable of doing nearly anything that you feel is eventually going to turn on the protagonist someway or somehow.

Also, like in the first chapter, the interplay between art and word balloon placement is nice.

pg. 6 - The laundry list of Grey’s past cases is great. It not only gives an indication of the pedigree of Grey’s experience, but also sets the imagination working, thinking about these untold adventures. Sometimes, that kind of throwaway keeps you hooked to see what grows, or in many of Mike Mignola’s stories becomes told in further detail.

pg. 7 - The Captain as a collector and archivist of England’s mysteries is a fascinating vocation. Terrifying, also, in its implications for what you could potentially do with that information.

pg. 8 - Whether true or not, this story of the Captain’s is a wonderful diversion.

Also, I’d just like to mention again that the grey wash on the art from Dave Stewart really works to set the atmosphere.

pg. 11 - I’d almost say that after this exchange Grey and Mary are practically married. Since there seems to be a mutual attraction, in these kinds of stories that almost categorically guarantees that Mary is going to die. Or turn out to be some kind of hideous frog creature.

Also, these flowers seem to be the same ones as in “The Nature of the Beast”.

pg. 13 - I find it interesting that there seems to be quite a few of this kind of ectoplasmic medium in the Hellboy universe. Here we’ve got Mary, but previously there’s also Johann Kraus and Mister Tod.

pg. 14-15 - The repetition of “poor man” when Zora learns of Grey’s doubts and skepticism is interesting.

pg. 16 - I wonder what the necessity is here for physical contact.

pg. 17 - The explanation of the title of the series “In the Service of Angels”, along with the trials and tribulations that “holy men” tend to suffer is a different approach. It seems to hint at some of what might transpire for Grey to go from this occult detective into whatever the cloaked man he is in Hellboy.

pg. 18 - And I wonder still if this is a vision of him as his Spectre-y form.

pg. 19 - The shade of Donald Blackwood is hilarious. He’s just the right kind of dumb, clueless, and obstinate so that we get absolutely nothing useful out of him.

pg. 21 - Like the silent panels of the crime scenes in the first chapter, this takes on a slightly different style and it works all the more for it.

pg. 22 - The creature seems to have gotten considerably larger.

Final Thoughts:

Since I was a kid, I’ve been enamoured by Victorian and Edwardian mysteries, horror, and science fiction; the stories that went on to influence the pulps and the entire circle of weird fiction that rose up around HP Lovecraft. I loved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, HG Wells, Jules Verne, Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Sheridan Le Fanu, MR James, and many others. Their short stories captured the imagination and transported the reader to many a strange and horrifying place. Mike Mignola’s Hellboy is founded upon those influences, but took a decidedly different path. With Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder, those influences get to come out and play more directly as Mignola is creating his own Victorian horror mystery. And it’s wonderful.

buzzin cos this took me like less than an hour n i was ALSO in an artistic frenzy at like four this morning with some other stuff but please take a doodle of the single best character in the whole entire gaME-

[Zora has just been settled into her hotel room, when she hears a knock]

*Zora had been sharpening her axe, trying to get her mind off her encounter with Zoe when she hears a knock on her door. She sighs and mumbles* "Enter."
