Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims is an album by German jazz pianist Jutta Hipp recorded on July 28, 1956 and released on Blue Note the following year. The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow stated, “as a whole, this recording is so wonderfully executed, one has to wonder why Hipp simply dropped out of the jazz world.”

The Zoot Sims Al Cohn Septet "Happy Over Hoagy" 名盤とは言いませんが、掘り出し物の素晴らしいアルバムをご紹介します。 ズートとアル、この素晴らしいジャケット・デザインに、久々の匂い即買い。 演奏、音質、ジャケット、メンバー、こういうことがあるから、ジャズは楽しい。 1957-1958年頃のStereo録音としか分かりませんが、二人で活躍していた全盛期では珍しいセプテットのアルバムですね。 A Howard Melton Production & Ⓒ Jass Records JACKET MADE IN CANADA 1987年の作品で1993年1月22日リリース、珍しくて個性的なレーベルでいい感じ。イラストを使ったオーセンティックなジャケット・デザインの雰囲気とは違って、リリースはとても新しいです。当時活躍していた漫画家みたいです。 さて、早速針を落としてみましょう。Shure SC35Cを真空管ハイブリッドプリメインアンプ+フォノイコで鳴らします。おぉ！って驚くほどクリアで高い分解能とチャンネル・セパレーション！ダイナミック・レンジも広く、期待を大きく越える音質！演奏も彼ららしい優しさと華やかさが絶妙にバランスされ実に素晴らしい！これは、超オススメです！ 楽曲も下記のように、スタンダードが中心で聴きやすくて、素晴らしい！と思っていたら... 何と... ！ The First Side 1-1 "I Get Along Without You Very Well" 1-2 "Old Rockin' Chair" 1-3 "Skylark" 1-4 "The Nearness Of You" The Second Side 2-1 "Georgia On My Mind" 2-2 "Up A Lazy River" 2-3 "Two Sleepy People" 2-4 "Stardust" 「All Music Composed By Hoagy Carmichael」と記載がある通り、すべてホーギー・カーマイケルが作曲した曲！オマージュだったのですね。 また「Previously Unreleased On Record」とあるので未発表の演奏のようです。 ホーギー・カーマイケルは、1899年生まれのアメリカのミュージシャンで、作曲家、ソングライター。共同作業者は、ルイ・アームストロング、デューク・エリントン、グレン・ミラーら。また、俳優であり弁護士というから驚き。カーマイケルは、1930 年代のティンパンアレーで最も成功したソングライターの 1人で、当時テレビ、マイク、録音などの新しい通信技術を利用したマスメディア時代の最初のシンガー ソングライターと言われているそうです。 ズートとアルは共に白人ですが、同時期に流行したウエスト・コースト・ジャズのような洗練されたイメージではなく、50年代のハード･バップ全盛期にレスター・ヤングの強い影響を受けたアーシーで軽やかにスイングするスタイル。音色は2人とも太くて柔らかくて温かく、特にズートのコクのあるテナーは絶品との評。いわゆるテナーバトル的な演奏ではなく、掛け合いの楽しさに満ち溢れ、ハッピー感に包まれるのが素晴らしい。カヴァーのイラストのイメージがピッタリ合っています。 ちなみに... 1947年に結成された"Second Herd"と呼ばれる第2期ウディ・ハーマン楽団の4ブラザーズといえば、スタン・ゲッツ(ts)、ズート・シムズ(ts)、ハービー・スチュワート(ts)、サージ・チャロフ(bs)。途中からハービー・スチュワートに変わりアル・コーン(ts)が参加、ここが二人の原点だそうです。 #ZootSims (ts) #JimmyCleveland (trb) #NickTravis (tp) #AlCohn (bs) #ElliotLawrence (p) #MiltHinton (b) #OsieJohnson (ds) All Music Composed By - #HoagyCarmichael Arranged By - #BillElton Producer Audio Restoration - #DougPomeroy Producer For Release - #AlKeller Cover Illustration By - #CollinKellogg Type By - #BTimbes Liner Notes - #WilliamFarrar センター・ラベルは表裏が違う珍しいデザインで、とてもキュート。全曲表記された文字だけの方が表面。裏面は、可愛いイラスト付きの #JassRecords ロゴだけ、洒落てます。 #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #jazzvocal #ジャズシンガー #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード *作品を知るとジャズはもっと輝きます。情報くださる先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn8zftnvGHA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Closing out my night by stepping back in time via my stereo to June of 1975 and enjoy the company of the great Zoot Simms, Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, George Marx, and Grady Tate from the album “Zoot Sims And The Gershwin Brothers” from the old, late, lamented Pablo label. Nearly 46 minutes of Zoot doing what he was best at, doing his Lester Young impersonation on the music of George and Ira Gershwin. Zoot had the touch with a tenor sax. He could elicit emotions from that instrument like few others. Never an innovator, but always at the head of his class when it came time to play, John Haley “Zoot” Sims was a master craftsman at his chosen profession of jazz tenor sax man. He made many wonderful albums during his career, but few held a candle to this one. All his abilities are on display here, from slow, gentle, milk the heart playing to down and dirty blowing. And where Zoot could be at times inoffensive, the same can not be said for his band mates here. No one had more enthusiasm for playing the piano, and few had more chops, than Oscar Peterson. While he sometimes let his exuberance get alway from him, for the most part he played the perfect foil for Zoot. The rhythm section of Pass on guitar, Marx on bass and Tate on drums also played well behind Zoot. The playing on this hybrid stereo is wonderful. The sound less so. Not that its bad mind you, just not as clean and crisp as it could be. Zoot comes across fine, with his tone and timbre intact. Peterson’s piano sounds OK. Mraz’s bass however can sometimes sound like its just thumping along below the music, and not stand out with the detail it should. Pass seems to get lost in the mix more then he should. And Tate’s drums, and especially his cymbals lack the snap and shine of the real thing. Still, you’re not here for an audio demo, you’re here for the music, and in that you’ll not be disappointed. Zoot Sims – Down Home

Billboard magazine called it an “unusual album”, in that Sims “applied his improvisational skill to a number of real oldies”. The magazine reviewed the singles as well, noting the “all-star rhythm section” and generally saying the songs were “perfect for jazz jukeboxes”. Down Beat called it “a marvellous example of Sims’ ability to swing”.
