Thelonious Monk, geboren am 10. Oktober 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, war ein herausragender Jazz-Pianist und Komponist, der als eine der Schlüsselfiguren in der Entwicklung des Modern Jazz gilt. Sein unkonventioneller Stil und seine kreativen Kompositionen haben das Genre nachhaltig beeinflusst. Eine seiner bekanntesten Kompositionen ist zweifellos Straight, No Chaser. Dieses Stück zeigt exemplarisch Monks einzigartigen Ansatz, Jazz zu schreiben, geprägt von prägnanten, sich wiederholenden Motiven, originellen Harmonien und einem unverwechselbaren Sinn für Rhythmus. Straight, No Chaser wurde erstmals 1951 aufgenommen und ist seitdem ein beliebter Jazz-Standard, der von unzähligen Musikern aufgegriffen und interpretiert wurde. Die Struktur von Straight, No Chaser basiert auf einem klassischen 12-Takt-Blues, den Monk jedoch mit seinem charakteristischen Erfindungsreichtum zu etwas Neuem formt. Sein Klavierspiel in diesem Stück ist kraftvoll und pointiert, mit markanten rhythmischen Akzenten und einer Mischung aus Dissonanz und Klarheit, die seinen Stil unverwechselbar macht. Die Komposition bietet Musikern Raum für kreative Improvisation und lässt zugleich Monks geniale Einfachheit und Tiefgründigkeit durchscheinen.
