Learning, growing, and sharing the passion🐛🦋(U10)
Reflecting on my journey of developing my personal stance as a nature interpreter, I realize my ethos is deeply rooted in storytelling. While I would absolutely consider myself smart and capable of any challenge thrown my way, I wouldn't claim to be the one to ask for a perfectly articulated summary of a concept, or a history (or stats oh gosh...)) But! I am your girl if you want to talk about animals or nature with the same excitement and perception shifts you had as a kid; when learning about something like dinosaurs or other planets for the very first time and feeling like your mind was blown, or maybe even that the person was just making stuff up because of how wild it seemed.
At it’s core, my passion sings when having the chance to discuss niche topics with open-minds that delve into things like evolution, coming from the perspective that there are so many mysteries out there that could be unraveled if you only cared to look.
Just this week, some of these topics for me and some peers have included trying to understand bird tetrachromacy (how and why they can see in UV), mammals returning to the water like whales and dolphins, or how?? Literally how??? lemurs got to Madagascar.
To me, it's not just about sharing information, but having fun in the process and getting to share what you learn about the animals and their exploits in ways that would rival the wildest fantasy stories.
[Saw-whet owl wing under UV💡 ]
[OG whale💪🏻 ]
I've been playfully dubbed the "zookeeper of knowledge" by a friend in this context, after spending far too many hours working on a project because we kept getting side-tracked and discussing things not necessarily needed, but so incredibly interesting. (And it’s probably a title I'd gladly claim if it weren't so corny to be honest.) Regardless, it summarizes my commitment to becoming a curator of the captivating craziness that the animal kingdom has to offer. With a bias but passionate zoological perspective, I strive to share my spark of curiosity. ✨
Beyond my zoology lens, I strive for a focus on eco-consciousness in the work that I do, hoping to bridge the gap between science and the public and to foster stronger connection with Mother Nature.
As for translating these passions to children, I’m a firm believer in both transparency and honesty. While it’s almost guaranteed they won’t enjoy their first climate change lesson, I think forming traits of environmental stewardship and the understanding that actions have environmental consequences in children is critical if we want our passion for nature to be held by future generations. I remember my first lonely polar bear on a drifting ice berg video, and yes I was sad….but it left a vivid mark on my consciousness, shaping my understanding of the environmental challenges we face and it very likely brought me to where I am today.
Speaking of inspiring children, I cannot hold myself back as I have to show you guys what I found last week!
[Zoologist Barbie!!!!!!!!💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗]
I'm not even that much of a Barbie fan but I think now I have to be! I would have exploded with joy if I had this as I kid! I mean, if Barbie is doing it, I can't even imagine how many little girls will now be exposed to the possibility of studying zoology or similar topics and I won't lie...I could cry 🥹 (not to mention how close the koala is to a lemur and my personal goals regarding that....interesting......verrry interesting 🔮)
Though I still think going outside with curiosity in mind is the number one way to develop a relationship with nature, I’d consider things and representations like this even more important in places like cities, where natural spaces are becoming less and less accessible due to never-ending infrastructure and the digital domination of screens and virtual experiences.
The allure of video games and online platforms often out-win outdoor activities at least in my own anecdotal experience, raising concerns about the disconnect between the younger generation and the natural world. I think environmental educators are becoming more and more important in schools, and I believe they play a pivotal role in counteracting this trend, as they offer opportunities for a child to focus on wonders within the natural world. I had a hard time myself trying to sound reasonable to many of my friends and family as a kid when saying I wanted to study animals and nature since technology was progressing so quickly and I was viewed as looking backwards.
and so I think this doll (or things similar) can reinspire or hold that flame when kids aren't yet to sure if they'll find a nice outdoor spot to explore, an educator excited to answer questions, or a community like Guelph that embraces natural sciences so much.
In my opinion, harsh climate crisis truths can surely be sugar-coated for young minds to an extent, but to completely wait until their old enough to ‘actually understand’ is just providing the perfect opportunity for a child to become a distracted or oblivious teenager or adult. Again, this is my opinion but at this point in time, in a current climate crisis with almost no signs of slowing down, being an adult in a country like Canada and purposely ignoring it is NOT cool!!
Now, we don’t have to live every moment with the weight of the world on our shoulders, and I don’t wish that on anyone! But I believe the absolute bare minimum is to consider our actions in relation to nature and provide the next generation the building blocks and exposure they'll need to make environmentally conscious choices. Concepts like reusable water bottles over disposable plastic ones, not littering, and realizing our planet belongs to others too aren’t scary things and if anything, promote cultures of care and community. These seemingly simple ideas start to lay the foundation for responsible and conscious individuals to gladly carry the torch of environmental awareness into the future!
Anyways, that's what's up with me, and so I hope you've found at least one thing on my blog that made you think about, reconsider, or learn something, and maybe even want to go hug a tree 💝🐛

How to Be a Real Life Mermaid 🌊🧜♀️🐚
The Look
🐚 Wear sea foam green, aquamarine, teal, ocean blue, soft grey, lilac, periwinkle, emerald, pale gold, white, deep blue, and turquoise
🐚 Pick flowy fabrics such as taffeta, chiffon, linen, silk, muslin, and sequined fabrics that resemble fish scales
🐚 Choose garments like maxi dresses, flowy skirts, bandeau off-the-shoulder tops, tank tops, soft scarves used as tops, shell clutches, woven bags, and pretty beaded sandals
🐚 Accessorise with jewellery made from pearls, sea glass, seashells, turquoise, aquamarine, opals, gold that resembles the sun glinting on the sea, and silver that reminds one of the metallic sheen of fish scales. Examples of accessories you can wear are bangles, anklets, layered necklaces, and pearl earrings
🐚 Makeup Ideas: eyeshadow in nudes like a sandy beach, greens and blues like the sea, or lavender and pink like a coral reef, shimmery highlight, dewy skin, coral pink lipstick, and seashell pink lipgloss
🐚 Hair Ideas: loose curls that look like ocean waves, fishtail plaits, green and blue hair dye, pearl hairclips, and sea salt hairspray. Brush your hair with a pretty wide-tooth comb.
The Lifestyle
🐚 Listen to songs such as Martha's Harbour by All About Eve, No Ordinary Love by Sade, Come Into the Water by Mitski, Pearl Diver by Mitski, Mariners Apartment Complex by Lana Del Rey, and Call of the Sea by Claudie Mackula (a longer mermaid playlist is here).
🐚 You can also listen to the sounds of the ocean, like whale song or waves crashing on the beach
🐚 Watch movies and TV shows such as Aquamarine, Splash, The Little Mermaid, H20: Just Add Water, Mr Peabody and the Mermaid, Miranda (1948), Mermaid Melody Pitchi Pitchi, Ponyo, Barbie in a Mermaid Tale, Barbie: The Pearl Princess, Neptune's Daughter (1914), A Daughter of the Gods (1916), Queen of the Sea (1918), Venus of the South Seas (1924), and Magic Island (1995)
🐚 Read books, fairytales, and poems such as The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, The Mermaid Handbook by Carolyn Turgeon, Mermaids: The Myths, Legends, and Lore by Skye Alexander, A Daughter of the Sea by Amy Le Feuvre, Undine by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, The Mermaid by Alfred Lord Tennyson, and The Sea-Child by Katherine Mansfield
🐚 Mermaids are renowned for their beautiful siren song, so sing sweetly and brightly as often as you feel like it
🐚 Make your self smell like the ocean by using a deodorant like Old Spice Deep Sea, and perfumes like L by Lolita Lempicka, Acqua di Gioia, Salt Air by Skylar, Fleur de Corail by Lolita Lempicka, Seahorse by Zoologist, Nymphéas by Kismet Olfactive, Salina by Laborattorio Olfattivo, Alien Mirage by Mugler, Very Sexy Sea by Victoria's Secret, 20,000 Flowers Under the Sea by Tokyomilk, Nebbia Spessa by Filippo Sorcinelli, Tiziana Terenzi's Sea Stars Collection, Chant d'Extase by Nina Ricci, Sirena by Floris, Squid by Zoologist, and Orto Parisi Megamare (be aware that the latter two suit a dark siren who lures men to their deaths more than a sweet mermaid princess).
🐚 Make your home smell like the deep sea too, with sea salt scented diffusers and candles such as Yankee Candle Sea Minerals, Yankee Candle Seaside Woods, or Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt
🐚 Home Decor Ideas: silk sheets in blue, grey, and sea green, seashell jewellery trays, homemade terrariums, jellyfish embroidery, seashell candles, beaded curtains made from string and shells, paintings of maritime scenes, glass vases filled with layers of sand, seashells, and faux pearls, seashell shaped soap dishes, rattan furniture, woven baskets, treasure chests to keep your valuables in, mermaid figurines, a seashell or jellyfish mobile, a bowl filled with seashells, a glass bottle filled with ocean water or with a love letter inside to replicate a message in a bottle, mosaics with marine motifs like seahorses and shells, even an aquarium with colourful fish if you are able to care for them
🐚 Spend lots of time around near bodies of water, swimming in it to connect with your inner mermaid, or just walking in it and feeling the sand beneath your feet
🐚 Collect seashells and pretty pieces of sea glass thar wash up on the shore
🐚 Watch synchronised swimming, or even learn it yourself
🐚 Go diving, snorkeling, or mermaiding
🐚 Visit aquariums to see beautiful exotic fish and learn more about the ocean
🐚 Do your best to be sustainable; make the world a cleaner place for your fishy friends to live in. If possible, attend a beach clean-up group local to your area to help pick up litter
🐚 Carry a haircomb and hand mirror with you at all times (you can hotglue seashells and faux pearls on the back of the mirror to make it even more like a mermaid's treasure)
🐚 Watch documentaries and read books on the ocean, marine life, and nautical myths and legends
🐚 Enjoy snacking on seaweed soup, coconut water, and Guylian seashell chocolates
🐚 Take luxurious baths with dead sea salt, seaweed masks, small white bath bombs that resemble pearls, a coconut scented candle, and calming music

My posts
Florence + the Machine put out an anthology/playlist for new fans that spans five albums, and somehow, my favorite song slipped through the cracks, so I wrote about "Howl."
While I was thinking about music, and since Unreal Unearth comes out this Friday, I wrote about how Hozier's "Movement" helped me when I was recovering from spinal surgery.
(Occasionally I write about songs I really like, and I decided to do that more often after the Donna Summer post turned into something interesting. So collectively, those are at #music discussion.)
Like I said, not what I expected I'd write, but that's the way the winds blew my sails this week.
I'm trying to decide what fragrance to write about next, but I just tried 1) Zoologist's Moth and 2) the perfume my grandmother used to wear, and they are weirdly similar to me, so that might be interesting.

I’m trying to find the motivation to set this blog up officially but *gasp* I’ve finally made something else worthy!!
I’ve been having this wild idea to execute a Fangan…. But it won’t be just any Fangan……
IT’LL INVOLVE BARBIE PROTAGONISTS
Sounds wack but it’s taken root far enough into my brain that I’m now doing copious amounts of character study into each ‘contestant’ and the further I go, the more this idea actually feels plausible. The majority of them may align similar morally but their backgrounds and motivations are distinct enough that a certain force of despair can perform with each of their strings.
To better suit the game, I’m having it take place RIGHT at the beginning of each contestant’s respective character arcs as I think it’d be more interesting to see how differently they would develop in a drastically more hostile situation.
I also had to cull quite a few contenders, mainly ones that weren’t explicitly ‘Barbie’ herself or just happened to be released too late as I wanted to stick with the traditional 16 for now.
I’ve already started doing reference for the uniform designs but to start things simple, I’m testing out doing sprites with their basic starter outfits.
In order of appearance:
Disclaimer: Their Ultimate Titles are largely based on what unique ‘talent’ they (might’ve) had that would’ve helped guide them through their respective movies.
Barbie Roberts - Ultimate Vlogger
Clara - Ultimate Eidetic
Rapunzel - Ultimate Painter
Odette - Ultimate Baker
Anneliese - Ultimate Mineralogist
Elina - Ultimate Traveller
Annika - Ultimate Ice Skater
Genevieve - Ultimate Chessmaster
Ro - Ultimate Zoologist
Liana - Ultimate Gardener
Click here for Part 2, cuz turns out the image limit is actually pretty small on here (oof)

A lawyer, a sex ed teachers teens actually listen to because he's entretaining and doesn't think they're immature for not knowing how some stuff works or being curious about it, a radio host, a librarian for a place full of obscure books, a zoologist, idk, I just like giving him jobs, he could be like Barbie
This post is so pure and enthusiastic, I have nothing to add!

Mean Girls
After spending most of her life being home-schooled in Africa by zoologist parents, Cady Heron moves to Illinois and enters the real jungle: public high school. She connects with social outcasts Janice (a Goth toughie) and Damian (a hefty homosexual), and gets a zoo-like tour of the cliques to avoid. Chief among them is a group Janice calls The Plastics. They are gorgeous, wealthy, snooty girls led by a malicious Barbie doll named Regina. Both admired and loathed by the student body, the catty trio quickly takes an interest in Cady, who tries hard to think the best of them.
Regina proves Janice right, however, when Cady’s interest in Aaron—Regina’s ex-boyfriend—inspires covert antagonism of adolescent proportions. Made aware that Regina is feigning friendship while stealthily assaulting her, Cady stays close to The Plastics in order to give Regina a dose of her own medicine (“In girl world, all the fighting had to be sneaky”). The trouble is, the more Cady play-acts like a Plastic, the more she becomes one. She soon learns that one’s character is a work in progress and that casual remarks made in private can have far-reaching consequences.
Mean Girls
POSITIVE ELEMENTS There’s a social conscience at work here, and the film isn’t afraid to moralize. Teens who tune in for the cruel jokes and snarky sexual stuff may turn their noses up at the final “too preachy and sentimental” quarter hour, but it’s nice to see a showy bow of redemption tied on an otherwise mixed bag. After 90 minutes of poking fun at self-important, superficial cliques, the story closes by urging teens to clear the air amongst themselves and practice mutual respect. As one young man points out, “There’s good and bad in everyone.” Cady learns that it’s true, and when she gets voted queen of the spring dance, uses the platform to honor the other nominees. She even breaks the crown in pieces and shares it with them.
Cady sets out to teach Regina a lesson, but learns a valuable one herself: It’s pointless to put someone else down in an attempt to make yourself look or feel superior. She says, “Calling someone fat doesn’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter. All you can do in life is try and solve the problem in front of you.” Most everyone gets the point, or at least appreciates Cady’s nobility. She’s realistic enough to know that every incoming class will have its Plastics, but is idealistic enough to believe that positive peer pressure could keep them from seizing control.
Another strong message involves the destructive power of gossip, be it malicious or merely careless. (The Bible addresses this issue in 2 Cor. 12:20, James 3:8 and Prov. 11:13, 16:28, 26:20.) Cady pays a heavy price for making a casual remark about a teacher that takes on a life of its own and causes pain. Until she owns up to it and apologizes, Cady is miserable. She takes a big risk coming clean, but decides doing the right thing is worth any fallout (“I had to suck all the poison out of my life”). The fresh start is liberating. She concludes that gossip is a dead end (“I’m trying this new thing where I don’t talk about people behind their backs”).
While undercover among The Plastics, Cady begins to lose track of who she is and the role she’s playing. This illustrates an important truth: No matter what we truly believe in our hearts, we are capable of behaving our way into a change of character. It’s easy to develop bad habits and rationalize, “That’s not who I really am.” But in Cady’s case, fighting nastiness with nastiness draws her dangerously close to becoming what she despises.
The principal tells an assembly of girls, “What the young ladies in this class need is an attitude makeover.” Indeed they do. It’s refreshing to see educators bucking the values-neutral trend and sequestering students in order to cure a moral virus. Ms. Norbury addresses the issue head-on, making the students realize that they’ve all been victims and perpetrators of gossip, and need to apologize to each other (an exercise followed by a series of “trust falls”). Ms. Norbury tells girls to stop referring to each other as “b‑‑ches,” “sluts” and “skanks” because boys hear that and feel entitled to be equally disrespectful. She also encourages Cady to be herself and achieve her academic potential (“You don’t have to dumb yourself down to have a boyfriend”).
There’s also a great statement about “lovingly tough” versus “permissive” parenting. Regina’s needy mother sees herself as progressive and open-minded. She boasts, “There are no rules in this house. I’m not like a regular mom. I’m a cool mom.” But the filmmakers don’t view her as cool at all. She’s a foil. Clinging to fading youth herself, she’s scared of alienating her daughter and lacks the confidence to establish firm boundaries. Consequently, Regina is shrewish, selfish and out of control. This example of lousy child-rearing makes Cady’s firm, involved parents look smarter and more caring, so that when they ground Cady, it’s clearly an act of love. This contrast—humorous, yet poignant—reminds teens not to resent their parents for making rules and enforcing them.
Elsewhere, the hunky Aaron decides that an innocent photo of 5-year-old Cady riding an elephant is more attractive than one of her striking an in-your-face pose with The Plastics. It’s a subtle moment, but a powerful one that says decent guys look at the heart. And while Cady may have lived a sheltered life as a home-schooler abroad, she seems better off for it. She’s better educated than—and lacks the cynicism of—most of her peers. There’s a sweet awkwardness about Cady early in the film that attracts Aaron to he

The WGA strike has begun.
In fairness to Disney: "You want Disney to wipe the floor with [Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida with presidential aspirations]. Because as evil as some of their business practices are (capitalism sucks, man, and there’s no getting around that) - I HAVE to emphasize that they have been curating a safe space for real-life queer people for decades. And we want that to win."
The Met Gala was on Monday; for my money, Harvey Guillén won, and Karl Lagerfeld can stay dead mad about it.
Dracula Daily (which I am reblogging lightly) has started up again; I am also posting non-readalong things on just my plain dracula tag, such the Edward Gorey paperdoll theater.
