It is May 1968, and the Nonnatus team are faced with challenging cases, one of which is much closer to home as Lucille struggles with her own health. At a coffee morning for expectant mothers, Sister Julienne meets heavily pregnant Lilian Reynolds, who is expecting her first child. However, after Lilian experiences some breast discomfort, she receives a devastating diagnosis.

I remember this scene vividly! Among other things, it was, as far as I can remember, the first CtM episode to end on a cliffhanger.

I strongly suspect that the suddenness of Lucille's exit, like Val's, had to do with Leonie Elliott waiting until the last possible minute to make a decision about staying with the series or not. Rather unprofessional, if you ask me — and I say that as someone who once aspired to do what they do for a living! In this case it creates a particularly awkward situation, since Zephryn Taitte is still on the payroll and thus needs to be written for. From what I know about churches like Cyril's (which certainly isn't everything), a failed marriage could bring his ministerial career to a complete halt.

I’ve been doing a rewatch of some seasons of CtM and reading into some moments.

There’s something so poignant about this scene knowing that Patrick has been in Tom’s exact shoes but still trying to remain as a supportive friend and rational doctor. He has a unique understanding about being in a vocation that requires him to sit at multiple deathbeds, and then one day it being his wife’s.

Major kudos to the writers and producers for including this thirty second scene between these two characters. They just as easily could have cut to Tom in the hospital or had Phyllis drive him and Patrick be in the ambulance. Having Patrick, a widower himself, wait for Tom on his doorstep, inform him, calm him, and drive him is just so important.

I’m not sure about everyone else but I’ve found some of the recent choices in series 12 to be missing that subtext and undertones. The Trixie bridesmaid situation, the Turner pregnancygate, and Lucille’s sudden departure still baffle me.
