Call the Midwife stars tease "tears and laughter" in 2024 Christmas special

Stephen McGann and Rebecca Gethings speak with RadioTimes.com on the red carpet at this year's NTAs.

Asked about what fans can expect from this year's special, McGann said: "It is all the fun of the fair and also the normal kind of darkness you would expect with Call the Midwife."

Meanwhile, Gethings teased: "There will be tears and laughter, it's heartwarming as always. It's about community but yeah, they're always tested at Christmas, it's not just about cuddles and Horlicks."

McGann then added: "And it's a very special episode, Christmas for us in our show, and that's the one people particularly respond to. I think it comes in as part of the festival and the year, which we're incredible flattered by, but it makes it that bit more special. Christmas is a special one."

McGann also spoke about what it means to see the show included on this year's shortlist at the NTAs, explaining: "It's lovely! I'm amazed, because it's always done by the public, and we were just saying, [the fact] that we get through like this after so many years, that we're even shortlisted, it's something we never, ever take for granted.

"And a message for everyone who did vote for us: thank you very much. It does mean a lot to us. We love our show, but we love it when people respond in that wonderful way."

Characters from my untitled original (Ties That Bind...?=> TEMPORARY BOOK TITLE=> IT MAY CHANGE)

[Historical fiction novel set sometime in the Middle-ages/Renaissance. In order to have more creative freedom, I've decided to create fictional kingdoms but, since I have thought of no names yet, I'll use the names of the places they're inspired by when describing the characters. For now, at least. It will be updated when I've come up with decent names]

Families => Main characters

Rúadhán & Cecilia. They live on Celtic-like island (think of a remote Greek Island but settled by Celts) with their four children Órla, Mairéad, Elena and Giuliano. Cecilia was an "Italian" noblewoman of the House of Venier—that's probably a placeholder name, but I really like it and the Venier family were an actual Venetian noble family—who gave up everything she had (or was disowned, I still have to decide on that) to marry Rúadhán (he is a merchant and traveled a lot, that's how they met).

Royal Family (the country is supposed to be akin to the Ottoman Empire with hints of Tudor England. Predominantly Ottoman but major changes are made on a few things—I'll try to research as much as I can)

I don't have a name for the king and queen (might as well end up being emperor/empress) yet, I only know he married three times and two of his wives executed.

Lorenzo (nicknames Enzo or Elio) serves as Ambassador and ends up marrying Elena (Enna)

That's also where "Nanourisma" comes into play.

Cecilia (the girls' mother) was also of Greek origin. Enna knows "Nanourisma" as well

Also, these two up above are basically a more historical version of Elenwë from my LOTR/Silmarillion fic "The Lady of Ithilien". Their chapters will be a RETELLING of said fic in a different context.

at first this was going to be a crossover with Blitzwing, Spinel, Pink-Pearl and Padaparacha...

but then I decided to add more to it, and added some other cartoon and video game characters into it.

also when playing Fallout 4, I really like to use the baseball bat to fight with, so that is why Nora from the Fallout 4 game, is holding a bat and seems to be keeping a eye out for danger...and yeah even if it isn’t canon, in this drawing, Husk has a little crush on Nora...

also Husk has a Cabbit on his head, well the hat he is wearing, and the Cabbit is Ryo-Ohki...

the little robot that is floating above Sundrop & Moondrop’s heads, is Pyoro from Vandread.

in The Cuphead Show, Cuphead & Mugman are twin brothers...

so if those two twins in the show, would that mean they are twin brothers in the canon of the game world of Cuphead...?

Raven from Teen Titans Go, is holding a sign with her magic...

that shows that Teen Titans Go should stop at Season 8...

I hope I can watch Villainous in it’s place someday, I mean even if it is just wishful thinking and hope it does happen one day...

Sallie May x Collin is in this Crossover drawing as well, if they ever got married in a Fanon Timeline, that would make Moxxie and Collin....brother-in-laws.

Lancer is wearing a crown and is holding on to Husk’s wing, it be cute if he ended up calling Husk “Cat-Dad”, like him adopting Husk as his third father figure.

of course when I was first working on this drawing, I had to at some point go to sleep, but then once I did wake back up I went back to working on this drawing.

the geth in this drawing is Legion, and Tali is a much better character once she accepts the geth, and maybe when she finally realizes that the quarians aren’t victims, since they started the mess first, and they were the ones who just assume that the geth would attack first, even if some quarians did try to help the geth and got k*lled for it....

but some of the quarians who fully blame the geth for being driven from their home world, are just being a bunch of shisno.

I wonder what a crossover ship between Caboose from Red Vs Blue and Legion from Mass Effect would be like...?

maybe it be more platonic, and Caboose would view Legion as his best friend, and if Tali ever talked bad about Legion, it could have Caboose tell her off by saying “now Miss Tali, I will have to ask you to stop being a Mean Lady to my best friend Legion....you are being very hurtful, nobody likes a shisno.”

I know there are some fans who 100% love Tali, I just don’t agree with her view on how the geth are the ones who are the “bad guys” when it was some of the quarians who started it in the first place.

I still think the Ralsei that appears in Chapter 2, and might of switched places with the real one when King was about to hurt Kris but was stop by Susie.

both Ralsei are different heights, the original has smaller horns and smaller feet than the one that is in the party in Chapter 2.

it’s my theory and fan headcanon that the Ralsei that went with Kris to the Card Kingdom, is not only trapped in the Card Kingdom but was replaced by the Other-Ralsei, who locked both the Door that takes Kris and their party out of Castle Town to Card Kingdom, and even locked it’s light world counterpart that is in the unused classroom, making sure Susie and Kris wont end up back in the Card Kingdom and find out the Ralsei they befriended is still trapped there.

don’t know if that theory will turn out to be true and fully canon, but if it turns out it isn’t, it can always be used in the fanon.

oh and the Other-Ralsei is using the Green Soul to keep the True-Ralsei trap in a green energy box.

now I’m going to go eat some pizza and watch some Transformers Animated, before I go back to checking out some more fan art on here.

“Becca.”

She made a noise, or she thought she made a noise after her name was called. Maybe she’d dreamt it.

“Hey, Becca?”

The voice was familiar but out of place. Why would anyone who called her by her nickname be attempting to wake her up? No one was brave enough to enter her quarters and try that. Well, maybe one person but he wouldn’t do it without good reason.

“Becca, I know you said you enjoyed sleeping in but you’re going to miss lunch at this rate.”

She frowned as she pressed her face into the pillow. She didn’t often get to sleep in but saving the Citadel and the Council from a rogue Specter and a fleet of Geth controlled by a Reaper had a few perks.

“Come on, sleepyhead. Wake up so I can feed you some real food instead of rations.”

The voice as way too familiar. She hummed a non-committal answer as she breathed in a familiar scent.

Kaidan? She wasn’t on the Normandy. Where—

*Chirp! Chirp!*

Birds? Birds weren’t in space, but they were in the mountains outside Vancouver on Earth. Finally, she rolled over, squinting her eyes opened. A blurry sight of Lt. Kaidan Alenko greeted her. The wooden paneling behind him was a dead giveaway they were at his cabin on Earth.

He smiled down at her as he said, “There you are. I was beginning to think you were more tired from the time difference than you led on.”

Even though there was humor in his tone she could still pick up on the underlaying concern for her. It was true that with the layovers between shuttles from the Citadel to Earth, she’d not been in the best of moods and sleep had been hard to come by. She gave him a half grin as she blinked away the sleep. “I’m good just not used to such a comfortable bed…or a person to share it with.”

Alenko cocked his head as he moved some errant strands of hair out of her face. His fingers caressed her brow and cheek as he slowly said, “I’d understand if you’re starting to have second thoughts about this…I know its shore leave but there are still regs and—”

“We’ve already broke the regs, Kaidan,” Shepard said leaning into his touch. “I—We both agreed to this and I—It’s nice that you voice was the first thing I heard today.”

He smiled broadly at her, his doubts evaporating as his thumb stroked her cheek. “It’s still morning, barely. Maybe tomorrow you can see a real Earth sunrise.”

“I’d like that,” she admitted, still amazed that he remember the random things she’d told him over their mission to find Saren. Telling him she hadn’t ever seen an Earth sunrise had been near the very beginning of their mission, right after they’d rescued Liara on Therum. “But didn’t I hear something about you cooking me real food?”

“Ah, yes. I thought that might get your attention,” he replied as he tugged her up to his level. “But you have to get up first.”

The Commander nodded as she hesitated, tempted to do something she had never really had an opportunity to do before. She caught the confused expression on his face as she paused. She’d never really been one to kiss anyone good morning, but things changed, didn’t they?

She rose up and gave him a quick kiss.

A she pulled back, he asked shyly, “W—what was that for?”

“I…just wanted to kiss you good morning.”

Kaidan blushed as he pulled her back to him. “It’s barely morning but I guess it still counts.”

“Let me practice for the rest of our shore leave?” she asked hopefully, feeling warm and giddy at the prospect.

His smile and the words that followed were the best answer she could have ever received. “You can practice all you want, Becca. We have all the time in the world.”
