how'd the idea of the understudy come to be?? i'm loving it so far

I'm so glad! ☺️

First, I wanted to come up with a theme for a possible 2022 edition of @zenmastersanthology. Sounds obvious, but I needed to come up with a story I'd be excited enough to follow-through with finishing. A story with a theme or central idea that could be applied to any of the T7S characters and Jackie/Hyde.

There's a certain movie that became quite important to me around the same time (for a variety of reasons). I know this is a tease, but I won't name the movie because that info falls into personal boundaries / privacy territory.

I began imagining Jackie, Hyde, and Kelso experiencing one of the emotional cores of this movie. But I flipped around and merged the character dynamics until I came up with an original idea that retains (one of many aspects of) what I connect to in the movie. Because Jackie, Hyde, and Kelso -- not the movie's characters -- drive the plot, the story is its own thing. Not a copy (although someone who knows the movie as well as I do might just recognize its echoes in The Understudy 👀).

Matchmaking (for an unconventional motivation and other complications) is the major idea I took from the movie. I thought, "Why would an in-character Kelso, who's in love with Jackie, ever try to match Jackie with Hyde romantically?"

Stories like The Understudy and my One Difference fics often start with me asking myself a question and trying to answer it.

Season 4 is territory not often-trod in T7S fanfic. It's more open for different plot possibilities, imo, so I like setting stories during that season.

Once I came up with a beginning, middle, and an end for my story (in my mind), I knew I could write it and that I very much wanted to. I realized the matchmaker theme would work well for this year's Zenmaster's Anthology, and this is the long version response to your ask. :D
