im such a lover of pre calamity zelink purely because any interactions or affection between them is that of two kids with the weight of the world on their shoulders trying to navigate confusing emotions — it’s just so innocent and unsure and RAW. like just imagine them when they’re close and having to figure out what that overwhelming feeling in their chest is whenever something as simple as their hands are close. what are they yearning for? what is the heart asking them to do? why do they feel so upset when their hands move away?
because realistically they’re not going to have many references, nobody’s going to sit the princess down—who is supposed to be unlocking her powers—and explain to her the intricacies of crushes and the human desire for physical touch, and the same goes for link. their human side is Completely ignored as we already know, any emotions that don’t pertain to the calamity are discarded and seen as ridiculous. so they’re left to explore with each other but there’s Roles here and rules that come with, are they really allowed? but then the roles start to disintegrate the moment they grow closer, the moment they’re more friends than princess and knight, and they both start getting curious.
with how much restraint link is bound to have and has shown previously, it’s definitely zelda who starts to push boundaries a little and touches him more, but he’s her knight and while he’s unsure of how permissable this situation is he lets her do so because that’s his princess, not that he doesn’t mind it or anything
so it starts as simple as a hand on his bicep at the sight of danger or somewhere new and of interest, something that makes him tense for a moment but then breathe and relax because it’s her and the touch is kind of nice. then it turns into hands on his shoulders from behind when he’s sat by the fire, when she’s just come back from pestering the local wildlife and he looks up at her and she grins in a way that makes his stomach swirl. it grows to zelda threading wildflowers through his hair and combing her own fingers through it so she can put it back up for him, daring to rest her chin on his shoulder to ask what colour flower he wants next and her hands are on his arms and goddess this is close. it’s to the point where she hugs him whether happy or upset and it stuns him, but he slowly wraps his arms around her every time and feels the way she melts against him. where she’ll take his hand into her own and fidget with it—because she’s a destructive fidgeter otherwise—bending his fingers, tracing parts of his palm until she’s memorised the shape of him and he lets her because he knows how anxious she can get. it doesn’t even tickle that much from how calloused and damaged his hands are.
people notice this, too. impa raises an eyebrow whenever she catches the tail end of zelda squishing his face for fun because she does treat him a little like a puppy (though she would argue it’s because he lets her) and she merely waves a dismissive hand. the guardsmen are regularly reminded that link is her favourite soldier from the way his name rings off her tongue like wind chimes, from the way she runs to him first and foremost after hunting a nearby monster hideout, especially when she argues that holding his face is necessary to make sure he’s okay. the guards merely grin. king rhoam doesn’t see it though, goddess knows how he would feel about her knight distracting her from her duties, but urbosa does because zelda has to get parental approval from somewhere. urbosa sees the way zelda looks for him in the group when she’s not by his side, almost making sure he was still there if she wanted him, and urbosa smiles. she sees the way zelda’s hand sneaks its way into his whenever she’s scared or nervous about something, even though she’s surrounded by the champions, and how his hand tightens around hers so she knows he’s going nowhere. it’s almost enough to bring a tear to the chief gerudo’s eyes, to know that her little bird is in safe hands whenever she isn’t around, to finally see her smiling and laughing and not shivering, tear-stained and weak in the middle of ice cold water, begging and pleading into thin air. when she looks at them, she sees two kids finally being able to embrace some of their youth and find comfort in one another, and it gives her hope. hope that they can still be naive teenagers together despite the circumstances they’re all in. and idk i just think that’s pretty neat

The Menace returns! And you choose Trauma so this is not a Link!Reader but someone who caused a trauma to someone else.
Here we go to the person that SCARRED our Vet to beyond belief. Marin!Reader and now I finally could write it down as I didn't want to make it a second dream section with all of the Chain as they all would be scarred for life and well, Legend would want to die. So and thanks to Gliphy I got the perfect idea with Marin!Reader.
They were the Marin on Koholint, so they are Legend's first love!
They live but just in a different world entirely. (My own theory on that)
They still remember Legend and hope he is doing well.
They still sing to animals and people.
After Legend finds them, he is at first suspicious. It could be a trap from the Shadow.
But his brain couldn't stop him from rushing to their side and holding them in his arms again.
They are a sweetheart and are holding Legends with such care when they sing him a lullaby.
The Vet will not be able to sleep without them in his arms anymore.
Their weapon is the Sea Lily Bell and Awakening Bell like in Hyrule Warriors.
The Chain is stunned and confused how a person with such a soft voice and delicate body fight monsters like a knight and with a bell no less.
I believe that there are two groups in the Yandere Chain.
Group one will be the one's that have practically a suffocating possessiveness and are overprotective. In the group is Legend, Twilight, Wild, Four and surprisingly Sky.
Before you scream, let me explain.
I think, that Sky would be possessive despite the usual Headcanons BECAUSE he lost Zelda during his journey multiple times.
Once she was led away from him by Impa, then she disappeared into a portal into the past, then she sealed herself into a crystal for that seal on Demise and lastly she almost lost her soul because of Ghirahim. Yeah, no way in hell you can tell me, that he wouldn't be overprotective and possessive over his darling after these stunts.
The second group is overbearing and/or cautious of Reader, not because they don't trust them.
No! They are cautious about the people around Reader.
Reader has a bleeding heart and would try to help anyone they found. Nevermind if it's a enemy or an ally.
This group has Wars, Time, Four (again) and Hyrule in it.
I hope everyone of them is self-explanatory.
Legend sees them as his future spouse. He knew them the longest! And has a history with them!
So he even sees the Chain as enemy, especially Wars.
But he would never kidnap them, he knew how they felt about being caged as he met them on Koholint.
But he talks smack about the Chain.
So he is more trustworthy than the others. So he stands in a better light than the others. So they fell rather in love with him than any of the other eight heroes. So they run into his arms if they got scared.
He gave them a ring, of course a magical one. But it's more than that, he wears the second one of them and as long as they both wear this specific ring, Legend is able to find them.
Legend is also clingy, very clingy.
Wars has to adapt plans so the Vet sees Reader. Because if he doesn't, he will go nuts.
He will use every trick he has in his sleeves to find them and if the others die in the process, he doesn't fucking care.
If Reader is tucking Wind into bed like an older sibling would and singing him a lullaby. Legend is so jealous but at the same time, he sees Reader with his and their children. So the jealousy disappears and he just watches them with Wind with fond eyes while daydreaming.
Sky teached them lyrics from his era, so they sing to him as he plays his harp.
Twilight has the time of his life as Wolfie, they sing to him, pet him, forehead kisses.
Bunny!Legend got it even better, he is very smug about it. Reader will carry him, pet him, kiss his nose, take care of his vest, protect him from Wild and if they are in an inn while Legend is a bunny, they will sleep with him in a bed and held him close to their chest.
They even bath together.
He thanked every existing deity, that Reader didn't know he was the bunny or he would die, happy but he dies.
Just because he saw them naked, something nobody of the Chain did only him.
Wars first, tries to find out how Legend was back then as they met but after falling in love he write poetry for them and they write with him song lyrics of ballads.
Time knows them from the War of Eras and is embarrassed to see them. Let's just say, Reader treated him like a child and never left his side through the whole war. But now he only sees the perfect parent in them.
They switch with Wild so he could sleep longer every once in a while and they cook breakfast in the meantime.
Hyrule sees how much the Vet loves their singer. But as a Fae he got drawn in and is always near them when they sing.
Four asks about the Bells as they are a strange weapon choice.
Their song is "Celestial" from Ed Sheeran.
How they met.
Legend's PoV:
We walked around my Hyrule, inside a forest to be more specific. We wandered through it and didn't found any monsters but there were little puddles and footprints inside the mud. So we followed the track until we found a person lying on the ground. All except for me run to the Hylian. Their blue clothes were so familiar like their hair and as they turned the person around. So we could see their face. I could see a red island flower in their hair and I saw a face of someone I thought would never see again. My brain cried out, that it could be a trap from the shadow but my feet just started to sprint to them. I ripped them from the hands of one of the others and held them close to my chest. I knew, that my house was near. So I picked them up and carried them to my home. The others just followed me and were calling out to me not to be reckless and even my brain still screamed that this was a trap but my body moved on it's own. I carried Reader into my house and laid them in my bed before tucking them under the covers. I didn't care if my bed got muddy or anything. I grabbed a chair and sat myself beside them. They had some cuts and bruises but nothing serious, thank The Golden Three for that. I held their hand in mine and even kissed their knuckles as I ignored the group who questioned me and my motives to bring "a stranger" into my house. My Love stirred and I felt a little more force as they squeeze my hand ever so slightly. They laid in my bed for few hours before they woke up and I can remember how relieved I was. They opened their eyes, they looked around and as their beautiful eyes laid upon me. They smiled and giggled their melodic laughter.
„Hehehehe... Seems like our roles are know reversed, did you found me on the beach as well?“
I snorted at their silliness. „Yes, our roles are now reversed but you laid inside a forest in mud and not in sand by a beautiful beach... But how are you here, Reader... You should be...“
„The Wind Fish fulfilled my wish! I had to do something for him but that was no big deal! Now I can finally see the world outside of Koholint, Link! Maybe you can show me around?“ I turned red as they said my name and right now I didn't care if it was a trap or not. They were back and real! I smiled at them and nodded.
„Of course, I can! I promised it on the log by the beach remember?“
„I know... But you also said you are a hero so you must be very busy... I don't want to steal your precious time... And I said you should forget about that!“ It was like an arrow was fired through my heart and my face and ear tips turned bright red. They were way too kind for the cruel world of Hyrule.
„Sorry, to interrupt your reunion? But who are you and how do you fight all these monsters inside the forest?“ asked the Captain and I just glared at him for interrupting our conversation.
Reader began to sat up, were I jumped up and helped them.
„Be careful.“ they still held my hand but I was more concerned about the Captain. If he tries to take Reader away from me, then he will have some things coming for him!
„Oh I remember you! You were the soldier in the war I should help out to get my wish fulfilled! I never asked for your name! I'm Reader and just like back then I dealt with them with my Sea Lily Bell and water magic.“ they smiled but I couldn't concentrate as THEY knew the Captain!
My head snapped to the Captain who seemed to recognise my first love.
„Ohhh the Hylian with that strange bell and has the Wind Fish as companion. How did you land inside the forest?“ I squeezed their hand slightly and they looked at me while squeezing back.
„I wished to be free from the island I lived on and wished to be with Link! I didn't see him for so long! But I wished that I had stayed awake then I could've greet him properly!“ They hugged me which I reciprocated to hide my even redder face in their shoulder and my ears which wiggled slightly.
I felt them pet my head as they said something which shocked not only me but all of us.
„Oh there are also the two kids from back then! Hey long time no see! You grown so much! One of you even outgrow me! Hihihihihi... But I still don't know your names as the war kinda kept me busy.“
I looked with my eyes to the others and saw how the old man scratched his neck and Wind rushed towards us.
„You are that Hylian with the cool water magic!? It's really been long, you didn't change one bit!!“
They laughed and combed through my hair that my head became drowsy and I felt sleepy.
„Our name is Link, Reader so that's why we are called by our title. You may call me "Time", the boy is "Wind", then there is Warrior, Twilight, Four, Hyrule, Wild, Sky and the one in your arms is called "Legend".“ they nodded and kissed my head.
„I don't care, if you call him "Legend" for me, he is Link!“ My hold around them grew stronger and I fell asleep with my beloved in my arms. It felt like I was finally being able to fall asleep after years of being kept awake...
This is how they met the "Singer" and Legend's first love! Of course, they all noticed how the Vet was acting around them. He was more open and expressive and less snarky. He will be going more and more possessive that even Yandere Twilight would be nothing against him. Wolves are protective over their mates and pups but Legend put that to shame. Sky always starts to play his harp as soon he sees Reader is near him, so they begin to play the bell and sing with him. They sometimes even do a duet with Wild. Apropos Wild, they cook together and dance with him just to have fun and to be silly. Time sees them as the perfect parent from his previous encounters with them but also loves to listen to them sing him a lullaby. But he knows that Reader would be never allowed to be on watch duty, especially not alone. And even thought they fought for being at least on watch duty. They are allowed to but only with Legend as they sleep in the same bedroll and they don't want to imagine what will happen to them and anything around them, if a sleeping Veteran noticed that Reader isn't beside him anymore. Wars talks to them a lot because of their magic and the different bells. Four learned specifically for them how to maintain their bells. Wind uses his "Little Brother Privileges" he gets lullabies, cuddles, playtime anything he wants until Time or Legend separate them, mostly Legend. Hyrule just loves to hear them sing. He isn't confident enough too even mention his feelings for them to the others. Twilight gets "Wolfie Privileges" but also as Hylian he gets attention from Reader. But none of them get as much attention as Legend as he is the closest to them after all.
The Menace will return next week with new words! INTO THE MENACE CAVE!!
I love the twist of being a different world rather than simply just the windfish's dream, legend deserves that little bit of healing at least after everything else he's gone through
And also I agree with how you've characterised the yans!!! I haven't put out my full headcanons for each of them yet (I really need to but they're pretty low on my things to finish and post of wips ngl) But I do have sky's out! and I do see him as very possessive but simply not showing it as much as the rest - he's a manipulative yan more than anything. <3
Legend has EVERY reason to be more cautious of wars, like you said of course legend has the upper hand since he has history with reader but so does warriors, he knew reader during the war of ages so of course he's going to be more defensive against him (time is only safe because he was a kid and doesn't see em in a romantic light)
the way they met is also really sweet, being the opposite of how legend and them met for the first time. I bet he simply wishes that it was after he was finished with this quest so that he could have them to himself instead.

So I’m kinda curious, I know you said you are not much of a shipping person (aside from like SkSw Zelink and Miphlink) but are there any of the popular ships that stand out either as ones you think are cute or ones you really do not like?
Hmmm 🤔 I’m fairly neutral or just meh about most, but I guess there are a few that stand out? Or maybe I should just list my opinions on the major ones I know of?
BotW Zelink - I don’t mind it post Calamity. Not really into it pre-calamity, it feels like it’s at the expense of a relationship that’s already there (Mipha and Link). But dang the two definitely would be close after the calamity, given that they’re the only ones who have such a shared experience. I could see it being romantic or platonic, and there’s kind of a heavy leaning towards romantic but then totk also makes it seem platonic sometimes too?? Whatever. Nintendo likes to be vague (except Skyward Sword, let’s be real, nothing about that was vague lol), but I can see it happening after everything.
Midlink - I think it’s sweet. I think in canon Link’s most likely gonna either be with Ilia or someone we don’t even see in the game as he travels, but Midna definitely could’ve had a chance with him if there’d been more time for them. They had good chemistry, and the physical attraction was clearly there when Link saw her true form.
OoT Zelink - Nope. Especially Adult Timeline, absolutely not. It’s a pet peeve of mine that people ship this Link with anyone in the Adult Timeline - he is a child in a teenager’s body. NO. Sure, his body might be attracted to people, but his brain sure ain’t figuring it out, and anybody who wants to explore that just… no. NO. As for Child Timeline, I feel like this Link has a hard time reconciling what happened, has a hard time letting go, and would therefore have a really difficult time separating Child Timeline Zelda from Adult Timeline Zelda and that would lead to too many mixed feelings. I can’t see them getting together. This ship is either entirely one sided (I can 100% see Adult Timeline Zelda romanticizing the Hero she’s been waiting for before she really realizes that he’s still a kid, if she ever realizes it) or nonexistent.
Malink - I quite like it. I honestly didn’t really see it in the game, there’s like… enough for it to happen, I guess, but admittedly Linked Universe has made me biased. But given that it’s heavily implied TP Link and OoT Link are related, and TP Link knows Epona’s song, and Malon was a friend of Link’s, and she talks of marrying a knight in shining armor, and Shade is a knight in shining armor… I can put two and two together. And I think they’d be cute together.
Sidlink - Just… why. I get that half the fandom is in love with Sidon, so they project that, but good grief. Link was engaged to his sister. That’s some Hamlet level incest nonsense there. Link may not remember Mipha all that well but Sidon freaking does. Just because the dude is ridiculously sweet and supportive to literally everyone and about literally everything doesn’t mean he’s romantically inclined towards everyone. He’s a golden retriever, there are two brain cells firing between those fins, let the man just be happy and vibe, good grief. I had this opinion before totk came out, and then the addition of Yona made me laugh because I knew the fandom would blow up about it, but she’s honestly really sweet and good for him - I loved when she called him out to help him, she’s a good wife, I like her 😤
Uh… I think those are all the popular ships I have any kind of actual opinions about? Aside from Skyward Sword Zelink and Miphlink, love them both, mwuah. The rest I’m just meh. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Honestly, I’m very inclined to say that just because two people share oxygen together doesn’t mean they’re gonna fall in love. Just because two people might have some chemistry doesn’t mean they’re gonna fall in love. And just because two hormonal teenagers think each other is hot does not mean they’re gonna end up together. But since romance is such a huge thing in fandoms and in our culture, and I am very much not in a romantic relationship and therefore the culture makes me feel like my life is incomplete, I am not very inclined to get into shipping all that much (translation: sometimes shipping is downright annoying to me, and I hate it when fandoms ship characters together just because they like each other as if other relationships can’t even exist or be meaningful), even the ones that I love. My biggest weakness is loving families, though, so that’s usually where I cheat lol.

I'm playing TotK again, and wondering. After all is said and done, villain routed, battle won--do you think Zelda ever prays to Hylia again?
I mean, imagine being her.
You devote yourself with fervor to the worship of your grandmother goddess, she whose golden blood runs through you. You know, you know that she is real; her mark is visible everywhere on the face of the world. You meditate and you sacrifice and you pray, you pray so constantly that it comes and goes like breathing. Waiting for the still small voice your mother told you stories about, before she died; waiting for the touch of a golden hand. For comfort. For purpose. For peace.
And all you get, ever, is silence. Not even the quiet of a held breath, the hollow ears-ringing of an empty room.
And then Calamity comes. And you do everything you can, and it's laughable how quickly your defenses break. A straw against a sword. Your army dies, most of them in the first few minutes of the fight. And your family dies, your father, aunts and uncles, cousins every one destroyed inside the same forty-five minutes. And your friends die, everyone who pledged themselves to you--they die first, and in pain, in full view of their people.
(And then their souls are trapped for a century, waiting for you to finally fulfill your fucking promises.)
Your warrior, your most devoted, your silent watcher, dies in your arms.
And then She comes to you. A drop of Her spirit, too little, too late, only just enough to preserve your knight until his body could be healed. And you scrape together every other bit of power you can summon and every scrap of knowledge you've ever managed to learn about wards and magical defense, and you walk into hell, and you curl around the devil and you go to sleep for a century.
And you have some power, now! Enough to fight him when he wakes. Enough to put him down, for a little while. And you think, maybe it's over, you can gather up your scattered people and rebuild at long last. And you start, and you get five or seven years at it before the real enemy shows up.
And again, you do what you have to do.
And again, you sacrifice...everything. All you have. More than you knew you could, because at least when you petted the devil to sleep for a century you were still yourself. Now you have to lose even that, and for an unimaginable amount of time. What's a century next to a hundred millennia? What's the eyelid-flicker of your mortal life, that mere couple of decades--you don't even notice decades anymore. Centuries are seasons to you now.
And here's the real bitch of the problem, that could only become clear to you from this height; you could never get Her attention in that mortal lifetime because you'd already been in perfect communion with Her for scores of thousands of years before you were born. Because anyone who is Goddess-touched gets torn out of time, and good luck putting your feet squarely on any forward-stretching path ever again.
Because the Dragon of Light is never out of Her sight, not ever, not for an instant, and what does some bit of chaff, some mortal mite, have in comparison to that accord?
What do you think it's like, to realize that the reason everyone you ever cared about died, was because they already had? Because when you went back, the ever-watchful eyes of Hylia learned everything you knew, and would not act to change it?
What do you think it's like, to know that no matter how hard you struggled, every single bit of effort you ever put toward saving the world was wasted? That there was nothing, nothing you could have done? If you'd known, you could have told them all to get away from you, and that's the only way you could have saved them. But you didn't know, and She didn't warn you, did she. No matter how much you abased yourself, begging for knowledge or aid.
And now at the end of all of it, returned again for a second time to her little, mortal self, tiny body, tiny lifespan, how do you think Zelda feels? She's been Goddess-ridden for longer than every civilization on her planet has existed. She has had Hylia's voice in her ears for every moment of eons. She has access to knowledge now that not one of her line of Priestess Queens has ever imagined.
But I think. If I were Zelda. I'd get my feet squarely back on the ground, and I'd commune with Her one last time, and I'd tell Her. "You got what you needed from me. And I guess I got what I needed from you. So we can call it even; we're quits. I'm done. I'll leave the key under the mat."

Warning slight nsfw
These are my headcanons for some creepypastas and what they would call you in a relationship
⁰ו°hehe! More headcanons!°•×⁰
Jeff
He would call you
-hottie
-bitch
-babe
My reasons are that he's an asshole but still wants to show you affection. He wouldn't really say these things by yourselves since he would just call you by your name but in public or around the other pastas he would.
Ben
He would call you
-baby
-princess/knight
-mommy/daddy
-babygirl/boy
The princess thing is because he plays the legend of zelda (duh) but the rest he just finds genuinely sweet and he likes calling you mommy/daddy in the bedroom he will call you these things to the point where you dont know if he knows your name anymore
Eyeless jack
He would call you
-love
-sweetie
-babe
Though he may not use these names often, whenever he does you do find it very endearing and like how he gets shy when he calls you these things until later on in the relationship.
Toby
He would call you
-literally any name (for couples) you can think of
He would call you any name because whether he is joking or he's not he wants you to know that he loves you, he will also call you by your name but there is a subtle difference in the way he says it that makes your heart flutter.
Masky/tim
He would call you
-your name
-darling
-hun
The nicknames are for when you two are alone mainly but he does enjoy saying the nicknames around the others every now and then just to see your reaction.
Hoodie/brian
-hun ABSOLUTELY
-babe
-darlin'
-___pie
The whole reason I'm picking such southern (in my opinion) names is because in my head he has a slight southern accent. (I don't know why) And you absolutely love it when he calls you these things (I'm like internally screaming as I imagine him holding you by the shoulders, let's say someone catcalled y/n and he'd just be like, "darlin', dont you worry your little head imma find him." With a kiss on the head and he leaves AHHH I'm kicking my feet Brian is one of my favorites if you couldn't tell)
(I spent too long on that I'm sorry)
Kate
FINALLY SOME WOMAN sorry this is what she'd say
-babe
-sweetheart
-sugar
I don't know why but I feel like she'd be extra sweet with you like getting you lil things anytime she found them and she'd be like "here you go" since she doesn't and does know how to interact with you. She just wants to love you.
Jane
This is what she'd say
-baby
-honey
-darling
-cutie
She sees herself as a badass or more accurately someone dangerous and scary so when she dates you it's pretty clear that she sees you as her cute thing. She doesn't pressure it on you but in her head you're her baby and will protect you, even if she knows you can protect yourself she won't stand down.
Nina
-again, she would call you any name that a couple would use
She LOVES you. Not so much to like, hurt you (like some yandere) but enough to where she's obsessed. She will call you pet names (even before dating) and she just wants to show you her love every. Single. Day.
Liu
(I'm gonna be completely honest I don't know much about liu or what all the hype about him is, please don't kill me)
-honey
-babe
-sugar
So basic I know but to me he looks like a basic book worm I'm sorry I'm not a liu fan I'll try to do more research for my liu simps :')
-Laughing jack
This is what he'd call you
-sugarcane
-candycane
-literally anything candy
He sees you as sweet so he will call you anything sweet, he genuinely loves you and doesn't understand names like "baby" or "darling". He just wants to call you as what he sees you as.
(also laughing Jane would be the same)
X-virus/cody
This is what he'd call you
-honestly I think he'd be a bit too shy or uncomfortable calling you anything
-once in a blue moon he'd call you love or say something cheesy like "if I'm the patient your my antidote" or something 💀
He's not like "UwU I'm shyyy" he's actually just genuinely scared to call you anything because he hasn't even figured out why he feels this way (this doesn't mean he'll fall out of love either he just needs to learn to accept things and eventually will adapt) he's a slow person in relationships so please be patient with Cody.
Clockwork/Natalie
-she would also be a bit shy in the beginning but would adapt faster than cody
This is what she'd call you
-love
-beautiful
-prettygirl/boy
She thinks your the most beautiful thing she's ever seen and she will tell you at least 3 times a week. It's not like Nina obsessed but it's her way of reassurance even if you don't need it. She simply just adores you.
This is all I'm gonna do because I've already spent an hour on it. If there's anyone I missed or you want I am able to take asks still for anything but I will warn you it might take a bit to actually answer. Please don't be afraid to suggest anything!!

Thinking about potential Lost and Zelda hanging out just having a nice time together scenes and getting emotional about it 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
- hero-of-the-wolf
This also made me emotional when I thought about them just hanging out so I dropped everything and wrote this real quick. Actual fluff!!! It’s possible!!!
...It honestly felt weird not angsting either of them ksvjgsgbjddbnf
————————————————————
Link ran the brush over Epona’s flank, the mare patiently letting him smooth her hair out. He moved to her neck, in the spot she always liked, and smiled as she happily leaned into it.
Technically, Link didn’t need to do this; there were plenty of stablehands who could easily brush Epona for him, but Link liked to come out here and be alone with his horse. It relaxed him.
Epona softly whinnied, and Link smiled at her, patting her muzzle.
“There you go, all finished,” he said as he set the brush down. Epona’s ears pricked as Link then pulled an apple from his pocket. “I even got a treat for you, sweet girl.”
Epona eagerly reached for the apple, and Link let her chomp it up, Epona bumping her head against him as she finished and making him laugh.
“Yeah, yeah, I love you too. Who’s the best horse in Hyrule, huh?” he cooed, and Epona bumped him again, a sparkle in her eyes. “That’s right, it’s you, you’re the best horse.”
Epona brushed her fuzzy lips up by his hair, and Link pushed her away so she wouldn’t nibble his bangs, Epona bumping her forehead against his instead.
“Yeah, sweet girl, you’re the best,” he murmured, Epona gently nickering. “You deserve all the apples, don’t you...”
Link trailed off, suddenly getting the odd sense that he wasn’t alone.
He slowly dropped his hands from Epona and turned around, and felt his cheeks warm at seeing Zelda standing a few paces behind him, a delighted smile on her face.
“Don’t stop on my account,” she said, her smile growing, and Link awkwardly cleared his throat as she grinned at him.
He gave her a quick bow, hoping to hide his flaming cheeks, and Zelda sighed at the action. She’d been trying to get him to stop bowing to her for as long as they’d known each other, but Link always did anyway. Mostly because it was proper, and she deserved that respect from him, but also because... well.
It was amusing how much it bothered her.
“I wondered where you’d gone off to,” Zelda continued, and Epona nickered happily as she walked over. “I should’ve guessed you’d be down here sooner. Hi there ‘best horse in Hyrule’.”
Link felt his ears turn pink, and Zelda giggled as she petted Epona, giving him a fond look.
“You heard all that,” he asked, though it wasn’t really a question, and Zelda nodded, lightly bumping his shoulder.
“Yep. Every word. But I think it’s sweet,” she smiled. “Most people would never guess that Hyrule’s best knight turns into a puddle of lovey mush whenever his beloved horse is involved. This could seriously ruin your image.”
Link huffed, and Epona made a noise that sounded an awful lot like snickering. He gave her a flat look. You stay out of this.
Epona tossed her head in response, and Zelda put her hands behind her back, smiling at him. “So, do you want to go for a ride?”
Link noticed then she was in her riding clothes rather than a dress, and raised an eyebrow. Last he remembered, Zelda had lessons she was supposed to be in about now.
Zelda waved him off, perfectly aware of why he was raising his eyebrow, and went over to the stall of her own horse Raindrop. “It’s fine if I’m a little late, Link. Impa’s been saying I need to get out more anyway, this is just me taking her advice.”
Link hummed, pretending to mull it over.
“Well... I suppose since Impa says it’s okay,” Link acquiesced, a faint smile twitching at his lips. He would have gone out with Zelda anyway, but Impa’s permission (even if it was something of a stretch) was nice.
Zelda smiled brightly in return, and Link ignored how his ears grew warm again, and went over to help her saddle her horse.
“Oh Link, I can do that myself, I know how to saddle a horse,” Zelda reminded him, and Link shrugged as he pulled the straps, giving Raindrop a glare when he puffed his stomach out.
“True. But I’m already here, so I may as well do it,” he replied, and finally tightened the straps when Raindrop couldn’t puff his chest out any longer. “There you go.”
Zelda shook her head at him, but took the reins from his hand anyway. “Thank you,” she replied warmly, and swung herself up while Link got Epona ready to go. “Is the ‘best horse in all of Hyrule’ ready to go?”
Link gave her a glare with absolutely no heat behind it as she snickered, and swung himself up onto Epona’s back in answer.
“Oh good. In that case, we can— race you to the moat!” Zelda blurted with a laugh, and got her horse going before Link could even turn Epona around.
Link smiled competitively as the two bolted away, and turned Epona around, leaning down to talk into her ear.
“All right girl, let’s show her just how fast we are.”
Epona neighed excitedly, and horse and rider shot out of the stables, catching up to the laughing princess in a matter of moments.

Febuwhump 2024, Day 20: Wars & Legend (Time, Sky, Hyrule &Malon) - Truth Serum
Fandom: LOZ/Linked Universe
Summary: "What you don't know won't kill you" and "The truth will set you free" were now phrases Warriors wanted to never hear again, since what he didn't know was the reason for Legend dying and the truth was only the truth that he knew.
CW: Blood, injury, fist fight, Major Language warning, talk of death
Notes: I have a whole HC for Legend's era when it comes to a prince being born. It is described in "A Deity's Son" Chapter 10 (or you can ask here if you want)
“What crawled up your ass causing you to hate royalty?” Warriors had never gotten the chance to actually get to know the Vet one on one and now it was forced since they had been separated through a portal leading into Legend’s era.
Legend didn’t miss a beat as they walked. “We have been silently walking since we walked out of the portal thirty minutes ago and this is how you start a conversation with me?”
“Figured since there isn’t anyone else here to holler ‘language’, why not talk bluntly and in a way that gets across to you better?”
“Flattered…” Legend kicked a stone as he looked up to the afternoon sun. “I don’t hate all royalty. Zelda is the one exception.”
Warriors took note of the distance placed between himself and his companion. “And the
knights?” That made Legend stop walking. Warriors stopped just ahead of him, turning back around. The glare that met him was a masked one.
“Why do you ask that?” There was a shake in his voice.
“It isn’t that hard to figure out. You keep the most distance from me, then Sky, Wild and Time. All of us have some kind of ranking.”
“Time is for a reason not related.” Giving Legend a look to continue, he did. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“What kind of bullshit is that?” Wars chuckled in equal parts amusement and annoyance, catching back up with the younger. “Can you at least try to explain so I can understand and attempt to be less of a threat to you mentally?”
When not given a response, Warriors lightly grabbed Legend’s shoulder. He wasn’t expecting the angry fear or for him to flinch away. “Don’t. Touch. Me.” he snapped through his clenched teeth.
Taken back, Warriors now saw all the trauma signs. “Legend, what did they do to you?”
“Oh don’t act like you care when we both know knights don’t. They care about the glory that comes with victory and the power that comes with being ranked above the commoners.” His eyes searched him, subtly looking past him. “Now there’s Captains with the title ‘Hero’.”
“What about us?” Warriors knew the comment was more towards himself, than Wild, but that didn’t change how this conversation's tone had changed.
Legend scoffed, “Queen’s pets, always following orders. I bet you wouldn’t hesitate to lock up a child and beat them if she told you to or kill a baby, all because it was a prince and not a princess.”
“What are you talking about?” Warriors was confused by the words coming from the hero in front of him. What had he seen or been though? What was this place that they had just walked into?
Legend continued on, not a care for how he spoke or about who. Though he had no filter, what he said was uncharacteristic for him and he himself wouldn’t tolerate it if it was said about Fable. “What is your reward, Cap? Is it the ladies? Oh wait, no, it is a specific lady. You bang your Zelda, don’t you?” There was a laugh, but nothing was funny.
“What did you just say?” Warriors took several steps forward, closing some of the gap between them. There was no way he heard him right.
“You denying that after a hard battle, your warrior Queen does take you back to her tent and allow you to hike up her dress and p-”
Warriors didn’t let him finish that horrific statement. He decked him square in the jaw, making him lose balance a bit while holding his face. “You watch your mouth!”
“Oh come now Cap, you wouldn’t be the only one of us doing so. After all, Wild did get the exciting news from Flora.”
Wars got in another swing to the face before tackling Legend, landing on top of him. “How dare you speak so vilely towards any of them!”
“We are just pawns in their game anyway! We are used and abused for their gain, why not get a proper thank you?!” He grabbed the golden locks that were Warriors and pulled him off, giving him several hits to the arms that were covering the war captain’s face.
Being the stronger of the two Warriors had no issue fighting off Legend, making it back to his feet. When he looked into the violet eyes, he saw rage and how this was all an act and he fell for it.
“You piece of shit.” The rage turned to fear, but Legend wasn’t looking at the Captain. Seeing his eyes flick to the side, Warriors turned around and was met with the hilt of a sword. Last thing he heard was Legend hollering for him to get up as a boot stomped his face.
There was a not so dull pain taking over Warriors head as he came to. He tried opening his eyes only to shut them once more due to the bright light coming from the hole in the roof. Moving his hands to touch his right cheek and temple was a task and one that he couldn’t manage and not only because of how much pain he was in, but due to the iron chains around his wrist.
“Wars? Can you hear me?”
Mouth feeling dry as if stuffed with cotton, Warriors swallowed thickly with the taste of blood. “Leg?” His voice was hoarse and straining. “W-what-”
“We got taken, but try to rest. You took a few good hits back there.” The usual snark wasn’t there.
Not listening to the advice, Warriors gave it hell to sit up, grunting and groaning the whole way up until he was sitting with his back to the wall. The memories of what had happened filtered in, making him look at his fellow hero. Legend was picking at the threads of his tunic. “Legend?”
“Hm?”
“Are we- gods that hurt- are we going to talk about what happened or more so what was said?” He felt around his nearly swollen shut eye.
Legend pulled his knees towards himself. “I would rather not.” There was the reluctant vulnerability again showing through as he tried to protect himself in some kind of way.
“You didn't mean it, did you?”
“No. I saw the knights coming after we started walking and knew that it would be better off for you if we were fighting. They would side with you rather than me, but if we were just allies, they would make it worse for you. Apparently it didn’t work out how I wanted it to.”
He hadn’t come up with that on the fly and Wars wanted to know the truth. “There was honesty to the first part, wasn't there, about the knights?”
Legend curled up on himself more, head tucking to the side so he couldn’t make eye contact.
“Vet, I need to know what we are up against with these men. Please, tell me what is really going on here.”
Legend began to open his mouth when the door swung open, denting the wall as it smacked it. A taller- and not so knightly looking- man walked into the room with three others. “Look who it is boys! Good ole traitor Link. The one who kidnapped the princess.”
Legend was visibly trying to seem unfazed by the few entering the room. The failure to hide the slightest tremble told Warriors that Legend had dealt with these men before. “Still going with that lie are we? The princess has already told everyone what happened and you can’t get it through your thick ass, dumb skull.”
“Did you just call me stupid, boy?” The lead man squatted down, grabbing Legend by the front of his tunic and pulled him closer. “Did you forget what I said I was gonna do to ya if I caught you?”
Legend coughed dramatically. “Suffocate me with your horrible breath that smells of rotten teeth?”
Warriors let out a small snort, clearing his throat when eyes landed on him.
“You think you are so funny, don’t ya? You think this is a game?” A blade was presented and pressed to Legend’s face. “I told you I would carve you up and deliver you to your sister, unrecognizable.”
Sister?
“Or better yet, I’ll just deliver your head to your poor old granny.”
“Don’t you fucking dare go near her!” Legend’s outburst only got him a laugh and the blade breaking skin.
The man took Legend by the chin. A new emotion swept over the Vet after the next words left the foul mouth of their captor. “Who says we haven’t paid her a visit yet?” Regret.
“You like games, Link, let’s play one. If you win, I’ll let you and your friend go so you can check up on her. If you lose, you die right here. Whatcha say?”
“What happens to him if I lose?” Legend was looking right at Warriors.
“He can watch your body decompose until he dies from starvation.”
When Legend sighed, eyes closing in defeat, Wars was in disbelief. “Don’t you even think about agreeing to this!”
The man stood with another gleeful laugh. “How naive of you to think that he has a choice, but don’t you worry. You are the main player in this wonderful game. See, we found this new potion and it has worked wonders.” He pulled a small vial with a clear liquid inside of it from his pouch. “It is called a Truth Serum and it does exactly what you think. No matter what I ask, you won’t be able to tell me anything, but the truth.”
Ordering the three knights to keep post outside, the larger man rounded back on Warriors. “I think you will be the one to drink it.”
“Like hell I will be.” Warriors desperately tried to move away, but he was already against the way and he was still exhausted and hurting.
In a grip that was unnaturally strong, Warriors jaw was squeezed at its hinge. The chain from his wrist to the floor was stepped on to keep his hands down from reaching up and causing issues. Warriors didn’t relent, only tightened his jaw muscles to keep his mouth closed. Knuckles collided with his cheek, throwing him off balance. He was hauled back up by his hair, jaw nearly dislocated as it was grabbed again. Warriors still stayed strong.
“Tough guy, huh? Let’s see how tough you really are.”
Slow steps were made back towards Legend who was now trying to scurry away. The knife from moments ago was back out, but Warriors couldn’t see what was going on since the man was large enough to block Legend from view completely.
“Hold still or you’ll be losing an eye.”
Legend’s legs squirmed at first, but he began to kick around as he let out a scream. Warriors got up to his knees, pain radiating through his skull. He pulled on his chains as hard as he could as Legend continued to scream. “Leave him alone!! I’ll drink it, just leave him be!!”
The man stood with the knife in his hand, bloodied. “You had your chance, this is the price.” Stepping away, he showed how his work. A rather large gash starting from the left side of Legend’s forehead crossed down over his left eye, the bridge of his nose, curved above then over his cheekbone, finishing up at his jawline.
Warriors yanked at his chains again, trying to break free. “You bastard! You fucking bastard!!”
“Me? You could have complied, then his face wouldn’t look like that.” The man pointed his knife back at Legend who looked like he could pass out at any minute. “Wanna try again?”
Even with Legend shaking his head no, Warriors agreed to drink the potion so Legend would be left alone. Accepting the vile and knocking it back, Wars prayed the others would find them soon and that the game would end in their favor.
“Whatcha name?”
“Link.”
“How old are you?”
“Twenty-three.”
“Where are you from?”
“Castle Town.”
“Really? Yet I have never seen you before today. Are you from this Castle Town?”
‘So we are in Castle Town… Keep talking dumbass.’ “No.”
“Explain.”
“I’m from a different era, traveling through time and timelines hunting monsters that have been infected.”
“Are you a hero like this boy claims to be?”
“Yes, Hero of Warriors.”
“Of Warriors are ya? You a soldier?”
“A Captain appointed by the Queen.”
“How interesting. How many others are there traveling with you?”
“Nine of us total.” Warriors really wanted to shut up at this point, but his mouth was running on its own the second a question was asked. He didn’t have a choice.
“Nine? Anymore soldiers in this band of so-called heroes?”
“Two more, though all of us could be qualified due to the fights the Goddess has put us through.”
“You know what, I know what your life or death question is gonna be now.”
Warriors swallowed so thickly that he was sure the other two could hear him. “I win by telling the truth, right?”
“That’s right.” The man stood right beside Legend, knife too close to his face again. “Final question: Would you even cause harm to someone of royalty, no matter their rankings?”
“Wars don’t answer!!” Legend cried out, but Warriors couldn’t not answer or lie.
“Of course not.”
“Tisk, tisk… That’s a lie.”
Legend strained against his chains. “He doesn’t know! How is he supposed to tell the truth if he doesn’t know the truth?”
The man laughed a full belly laugh. “And whose fault was it for not telling him, hmm? Looks like today is your last day.”
Warriors was confused by both men's words. He didn’t lie, he physically couldn’t. What didn’t he know? “I told the truth. We won!”
“But you have caused harm to a royal.” He grabbed a fist full of Legend’s hair. “You just didn’t know he was one of them. You should tell him, since you won’t be able to soon.”
Legend focused his eyes, locking with Warriors. “M-my full name is Prince Link Eugine Lon-Hyrule. Zelda is my twin sister.” He then said quieter, “I’m so sorry Warrior- AHH!!”
The knife that carved into the fear filled face, was jabbed multiple times into the lower chest of Legend. After the first two times, he stopped all noises, shock taking over. His eyes were wide, mouth hanging open. Warriors knew Legend was bleeding, but it was blending in with his tunic too much to tell how badly.
“ NO!!” Warriors tried getting to his feet, still thrashing at his chain. He couldn’t get to full height, but he still fought in vain to get to the now slipped to the side Legend.
“Enjoy watching him rot.” The man said as he walked out the door, closing them in their single grave.
“Legend? Legend! I need you to put pressure on the wounds. Come one, I know you can do it. Come on, Vet, don’t give up on me now. You still have some explaining to do. I want to know more about the last name Lon. Legend, please, please… Someone get us OUT OF HERE!!”
Warriors watched the tears fall from Legends eyes, into the cut along his face. His hands were trembling as they were held loosely to his chest and he was in a curled up ball choking on blood. He looked so young, no older than sixteen. Warriors thought about it, he didn’t even know Legend’s age. For all he knew, the vet really could have been sixteen.
Wrist bleeding from the iron shackles digging in deep, Warriors still gave it his all to get free. He owed it to Legend. His own hot tears ran down his cheeks as he saw Legend’s breathing slow to nearly nothing. His eyes were vacant as they looked right at Warriors.
“Legend… please.” It was no more than a whisper.
“Wars?!”
“Legend?!”
Voices… Warriors heard voices.
“Link?!” That was a familiar voice, but there was no way she was here.
“Cap, Vet, where are you?!”
“In here… IN HERE! We are in here, hurry!!” Warriors picked up his fight to be free with the sounds of the others getting closer.
The door to the room was kicked in by Time, sky and Hyrule following. Behind them was a gray haired woman that looked and sounded much like Malon.
“Link!” The woman said as she landed with Hyrule by Legend’s side.
“Help him! Please help him!” Warriors was in his own state of shock now.
Time cupped both of Warriors cheeks, trying to calm him down. “Hey, Cap, he will be fine. Hyrule is going to take great care of him, but I need to know if you are injured.”
“N-no.”
“Okay, what happened.”
“T-they- We- i-I… I didn't know. I didn’t know and they made me drink tru-truth serum. I didn't know. This is my fault, ‘m sorry!” Warriors hysterics weren’t going to go away until after Legend was awake and responding.
Time broke the chains holding Warriors hands, letting him collapse into his chest. “You two are safe, but we need to get you to the ranch sooner rather than later.” He pressed a Red Potion to his lips, partly forcing it until Warriors realized what it was.
The haze of the hysteria cleared, allowing Warriors to see and hear clearly. He was helped to his feet, most of his weight supported by Time. His eyes could see Legend’s chest moving again and he let out a choked off sound when the violet eyes blinked.

The Wolfbred Chronicles - The "Lost" Tribe - Part One - Moonlight, Markings and Musings
“You're… Wolfbred?” Zelda couldn't help herself but laugh.
Her bodyguard looked up at her. His face looked like he wasn't sure whether he was offended or very, very confused by her laughter.
“No, no… Father hates Wolfbred. He said he'd never knight another one. You're a personal bodyguard knight, Link. Father would never.”
Urbosa watched as the small, previously-assumed-to-be-Hylian man just looked at Zelda with a completely blank stare. The moon was on his head, painting his eyebrows white along with the mythical swirl of a wolf long gone that was shimmering on his forehead. She pressed on her temple as she tried to recall how her dearest friend interacted with these creatures, and how she determined that they were Wolfbred. Eventually, she bent down to his level and pointed firmly at his hand. “Give, Link, give.”
Almost instantly, Link offered up his hand.
“Wow! How did you do that? I've never seen the Tiny Princess get more than a black stare.”
“Wolfbred were a passion project of my dearest friend. I remember she gave them orders in a particular format. Simple orders in a simple format. I also remember something that could prove… particularly challenging in our future here with Link.”
“But what's with the hand, Urbosa?” Revali tipped his beak from her. “Did you just want to order the guy around?”
“The Queen told me a Wolfbred could be identified by the wrist. I needed his hand to check his wrist to see if he is truly Wolfbred, like I believe he is.” Urbosa retrieved her scimitar. “Catch, Link, catch.” She gently tossed the blade, handle outwards, to Link. A soldier like himself should catch it no problem.
And he did catch it… at first. His hand grasped the handle, but he dropped the blade when he turned it over.
Urbosa snatched his hand back, he leaned away from her.
“Okay, so the so-called hero is clumsy, what does that tell us?”
“He's not clumsy. He's Wolfbred.” She held up his hand. “See?”
“What in the-?” Revali muttered. “Those are some messed up thumbs. No wonder he couldn't hold onto your dumb sword.”
Urbosa bit her tongue. “His thumb is set back, partially on the wrist here.” Link yanked on his hand, she spoke soft. “Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you, Link.”
“Is that all, Urbosa? I fail to see how a simple mutation of the wrist was enough for exile.”
“No, of course. That's just a unique trait of the Wolfbred. He's got the marks on his face too.”
“But… he looks so much like a Hylian.” Zelda wanted to touch his markings, but Link kept pulling his head away when she reached out. “I'd expect him to have fur, or a tail at least.”
“But of course! They're supposed to be super soldiers. Part of their charm was that you couldn't identify them from afar, which meant enemy armies couldn't target them as easily. Once upon a time, the Hyruliean army was primarily Wolfbred.” She sighed. “We Gerudo were nearly ravaged by the Wolfbred of those days.”
“Oh boy, wolf in the name and descended from war crimes? Wouldn't be surprised if he was Rinkū's son.”
Link turned his head to Revali after hearing that name.
“R-Rinkū's… son? His father is named Ordon!”
Link whipped his head back to Zelda.
“Ah, Tiny Princess. Revali's not talking about a literal son. More like a descendant. A great warhound from ancient times. He was basically the pet of an ancient queen. When she was killed in battle, he… kinda went on a rampage. Goron, Rito, Zora, Hylian… but especially the Gerudo. He and his pack of warhounds slaughtered without mercy… much like this Calamity Ganon is planning to do now.”
“We… Gerudo have since come to forgive. His queen is believed to have been slaughtered by Ganon, who is believed to have once been Gerudo. If we will not stand to have Ganon's actions associated with our people… then we should not do the same to the descendants of Rinkū. However, I know not all of Hyrule feels the same way. My dearest friend risked her reputation to free the Wolfbred from exile…”
“It is said that the queen's sole female relative was the only one who could command them to stop. The king himself found his orders on deaf ears. Probably why your father dumped him off on you. He has the Sword, so we have to keep him around, but hey, the female Royal will keep him in line.”
Zelda's face exuded fear, disgust and anger.
Urbosa bent down to her. “Don't listen to Revali. Hyrule is known for its bloody history. This is simply his. But of course, if Gerudo and Hylia's own can commit atrocities and not be remembered by them, then Link here shouldn't either. He's a sweet boy. I assure you, his fear of you greatly outweighs your fear of him.”
“You… said there was a complication with him?”
“Ah, yes. You see, because the Wolfbred were exiled for so long… ah, this might be easier to show you.” Urbosa looked towards Link. “Link, there's a carriage with horses near the stable. It will hurt if you get hit.”
Link turned his head at his name, but didn't respond to the rest of the sentence.
“Urbosa, where are you going with this nonsense?”
Urbosa held her hand up to silence the bird. “Link,  there's a hit with stable near the hurt. It will horses if you get carriage.”
Link continued to stare at her, staying perfectly still and emotionless.
“As you can see, little bird, Revali, Daruk… plain and simple, it doesn't matter if I speak coherently to him. Link can't speak Hylian.”

for any and all aus (botw/totk)
Does zelda have any pet names for link?
I refuse to believe that either of them are normal about what they call each other, there's no 'honey's or 'darling's or anything mushy like that, though they can each turn the most normal words into affectionate pet names. Like after totk Zelda regularly calls Link 'Professor' or other teasing titles that they've earned throughout their adventure, especially ones that make them sound smart since they participated in so much scientific and archeological discovery.
A lot of their nicknames are also totally interchangeable, Zelda will call Link 'Princess' and they will call her their 'knight in shining armor'. Idk, Zelda just seems like the type to be able to call Link anything from 'Swordsman' to 'Glutton' and say it with so much love that it can functionally be interchangeable with any of the more common pet names. She says 'my knight' like most people would say 'my love' yk?

this came to me like some prophetic vision but i’ve concluded that when zelink kiss link cups her face and zelda wraps her arms around his waist and he has to stand on his toes a little to match her height cuz that’s her pet knight right. she should hold him like that. go on. do it. he likes it. why not pick him up and twirl him around too? he’ll giggle and it sounds real cute. do it. matter of fact pepper some kisses on his cheek as well. it makes him go red. treat him like the little malewife he is trust me it works wonders

love's shining circle OCxCanon week 2024 Day 6: "an intimate moment" Pairing type: platonic + romantic (unlabelled) Canon Character: Zelda OC: Lila Fandom: the legend of zelda botw/age of calamity Wordcount: 1704
AO3 link
CWS: mentions of death/murder
Synopsis: Both Lila and Zelda are desperate for some sense of normalcy. Both are just children forced to bear a burden they never asked for. It's nothing an evening walk in the woods can solve, but it might help a little bit. (set pre-calamity)
Lila pulled a brush gently through her horse’s silvery mane. It was evening, but for once the night was still.
It usually was in Castletown, after all. As the residents slept the night away, safe from the critters that ruled the night. Safe from winds and monsters and any natural sounds that might dare to exist nearby, shielded by unnatural brick walls and guarded by stern guardsmen.
Lila wasn’t the biggest fan of Castletown. It was too busy, too rich… the people were too distant from each other. Emotionally, anyway. Physically, houses and streets were so cramped together it was hard to go anywhere without knocking into people’s shoulders. It was an awful combination.
Humming to herself as she brushed her horse’s mane was a simple, quiet way for Lila to calm herself down after another long day away from home, without drawing too much attention to herself.
She missed Lurelin so much. And her parents.
She knew she had a supposed duty here in Castletown- or wherever Princess Zelda went- but the homesickness never really faded. She was doubtful that it ever would.
Her horse- Eponine- snuffled and chewed at Lila’s hair, so she ceased brushing her for a moment. She found a carrot in one of her bags, and held it out to the horse, who took it and munched on it happily.
“Good work today,” Lila mumbled, petting Eponine’s face as she ate the snack, “It was a very long day.”
The horse gave no response other than nuzzling the side of Lila’s face, which made her smile slightly.
“Oh, Lila. You’re here quite late.”
The young knight turned, a little startled, and was greeted by the calming sight of Princess Zelda, still in her travelwear, and who had appeared in the doorway of the stables that led into the Castle itself. Lila made to bow, out of instinct, but was cut off by Zelda.
“You don’t need to do that. May I speak with you?”
Lila stood back up and gave Eponine’s mane one last brush, before putting her equipment away. She turned back to Zelda, and nodded, “Of course.”
She watched as Zelda crossed over the stables and sat down on a hay bale. After the Princess patted the space next to her, Lila sat down as well without hesitation.
Zelda fiddled with the fabric of her shirt for a minute. Lila stayed quiet, kept her hands folded neatly in her lap as she’d been taught to, and waited.
“Lila, have you ever…” Zelda paused, “Have you…”
She took a deep breath, and then shook her head.
“Sorry. This is stupid.”
“Have I… what, Princess?” Lila pried, watching her friend closely.
Zelda pursed her lips. Lila tried not to focus on them too much, and instead looked up at Zelda’s eyes. And noticed the dark shadows hanging beneath them. How much sleep had she been getting recently?
“Have you ever considered what it might be like to be… normal?”
Lila blinked.
To be honest, she had. She knew exactly what Zelda meant. She had never asked for her destiny as the Goddess’ Chosen Knight, just as she knew Zelda had never asked to be the Princess, or for her still-dormant powers.
However, as she thought, Lila’s silence seemed to be misinterpreted by Zelda, who’s face bloomed with a soft pink in embarrassment, and she quickly tried to backtrack.
“Of course you haven’t. It was a ridiculous question, I’m sorry-”
“I have!” Lila cut in, and then felt her own face warm up, shocked at her own interruption, “Sorry!”
But Zelda just stared at her with wide eyes.
“Go on…?” the Princess asked quietly.
Lila froze. Took a deep breath. And once the words started coming, she could hardly stop herself.
“Well. I do like swordfighting, and protecting you. And, um, people. but I like lots of other things too. I always just wanted to be an adventurer like my parents, maybe even on the seas. I’d love to sail to new lands and learn about new plants and animals. I like to play music, and dance, and feed the dogs and cats and other animals back home. I like to watch the sun set and rise over the sea,” she sighed, “I can’t do any of that here… I miss it. And I miss my family. Very much.”
“You can go home to Lurelin though, right?” Zelda asked, eyebrows furrowed,  “And visit them?”
“My family aren’t there,” Lila said quietly, and hesitated for a long moment before adding, “My parents were killed. By the Yiga Clan. Because I was chosen by the Sword.”
When she turned back to the Princess, her face was pale, and her eyes wide and stricken.
“I’m so sorry.” Zelda whispered, “I’m so, so sorry.”
Her eyes filled with tears that spilled over like a waterfall as she apologised over and over, and Lila reached out to hold her hands gently.
“It’s not your fault.” She murmured.
“But- I still- I just…” Zelda’s breath hitched, and she curled in on herself. “I’m sorry.”
Lila, knowing this was improper but not caring at the current moment, where there was nobody there to see, pulled Zelda into her arms, and rested her chin on the other girl’s head.
“It’s not your fault,” she repeated, “It’s not yours. It’s not mine. None of this is our fault. This isn’t fair. And I hate it, too. I wish we could just be normal kids.”
“I… I heard some of the castle staff gossiping the other day,” Zelda choked out through her tears, “About nothing much. But they were talking about their first crushes, and old schoolyard drama, and just… things that are so normal to everyone else… But my… my whole life… has just been this…People getting hurt ‘cause of me… Failing over and over and OVER again. And I’m just… so sick of it!”
Lila tightened her embrace of Zelda.
“I’m so tired of all of this, Lila. I want to attend school, I want to learn how to farm, or, or be a librarian. I want to be a teacher. And a researcher. I want to fall in love, and sneak out with my partner, and pick berries in the woods and cloudgaze, and, and... What did I do wrong?! Why is this my life?!”
“It’s not your fault.” Lila whispered, “It’s not. It’s not.”
And then, spurred on by what was possibly insanity, and possibly bravery, but most likely both, she curved her hand around to hold Zelda’s tightly.
“Let’s go.” She said, and Zelda looked up at Lila, confused, her eyes red, and tears still rolling down her cheeks. “Let’s sneak out. Let’s go pick some berries. And we can stargaze ‘til the sun comes up. I can show you where the North Star is.”
“What…?” Zelda looked around, puzzled, making sure nobody was listening in, “Lila, we could get in so much trouble!”
“So what? I’m the strongest knight in the whole kingdom. You can’t be better protected out there than that.”
“But we have stuff to do in the morning!” Zelda insisted, “We need to train… and prepare for the trip to the Spring of Power!”
“We can do that later. That trip isn’t for three days. We deserve some fun. Some time to just be Zelda and Lila. Not Princess and Knight.” She got to her feet and offered Zelda her hand, “Right?”
Zelda wiped at her face with her sleeve, and looked around again. And then she smiled.
“You’re right.” She murmured, and then again, louder, as though convincing herself, “You’re right. Let’s go. Right now.”
Lila grinned, and guided Eponine out from her stable, and re-saddled her as fast as she could. The horse nuzzled Zelda as she waited. She also found a spare cloak lying around in the stable, and put it on after giving Zelda her own. It was a little threadbare, but it would do.
With everything ready, Lila carefully helped Zelda onto the back of Eponine before climbing into the saddle herself. She guided the silver horse out of the stable, and pulled up the hood of her cloak. The rustling of fabric told her that her companion did the same. When they were out on the street, Lila looked back and shot Zelda a mischievous grin, and then kicked Eponine straight into a gallop.
Zelda yelped, and quickly wrapped her arms tightly around Lila’s waist. Lila bit down on her lip and resolutely stared forward as she felt a blush warm her face.
And through the Castle gate they galloped, out the East entrance of town, and across the riverside bridge. Safe from view by the cover of nightfall, and the convenient timing of the guards shift change leaving the East gate unattended for just a few minutes.
They found their way into a little wooded area, far from any prying eyes, and Lila speared some fish and set up a little campfire to cook them on while Zelda picked mushrooms and berries. They laughed and chatted while eating their late night snack, pretending they were just any normal pair of teen girls, instead of teen girls with the weight of the world on their shoulders. They picked flowers and wove them into chains, and chatted about the most inane things they could think of, stories from Lila’s childhood, gossip Zelda passed on from the castle staff. But both froze upon the notion of talking about any crushes they may have.
It would be improper, after all.
For a Knight to love her Princess.
For a Princess to love her Knight.
Especially when they had such an important duty to the world.
But they caught each other’s eye and understood.
For tonight, under the stars, they were just two girls. And it was okay.
It was okay when they wove their berry-stained fingers together.
It was okay when they drew closer to one another.
It was okay when their lips pressed together. Uncertain, and shy… But…
It was okay.
It was warm.
It was safe.
It couldn’t last forever. They knew that.
They’d find the North Star together, and one day it would guide them to peace, to safety, to home.
To each other.

Ummm idk how posting fanfics works here but I wrote a little Zelimpa oneshot and I thought I’d share it here
- - - - -
Birds chirped as the sun fell over the princess’s eyes, waking her gently into a warm embrace. The actual warm embrace she felt however, came from a certain white haired individual, whose arms clung to Zelda’s waist securely. Rubbing her eyes, the blonde tried to discern how the two ended up in such a situation.
The day prior, Zelda and Impa found themselves traversing through the Faron woods in search of someone who could give them information that might help Zelda feel more connected with the land. Perhaps if she became engrossed with the history, unlocking her power at the spring would prove an easier task.
“Your Majesty,” there was that voice of pity again, “It’s getting late, perhaps we should seek shelter?” Golden beams sliced through the canopy as the setting sun illuminated the woods before them.
The princess groaned mentally, she was stubborn but she found that Impa was more so. They had not made nearly enough progress. Even if Zelda insisted she was fine and did not need rest, Impa would not give up on escorting her to safety.
“I suppose you are right.” Despite her efforts, her words came out sounding sad, with a twinge of anger.
Impa, ever stoic, nodded silently. Did nothing phase her? Zelda was feeling rather annoyed, and Impa’s inate ability to remain calm was only fueling the fire.
They continued to walk about the dense jungle, Impa scanning the land and Zelda’s eyes glued to the ground.
“This cave is shallow, so I doubt we’ll have trouble with keese, and it will shelter us from the weather. Is this spot okay with you, princess?”
Zelda merely nodded, afraid that if she tried to speak, nothing but choked sobs would escape her lips.
As Impa set down their bag, Zelda found herself staring as she often did. The swift movements of the Sheikah were engrossing, the way her hair cascaded over her shoulders, the way her brown eyes practically glowed in the setting sun, the way her brow furrowed in focus. All of it, the princess concluded, was utterly irritating.
Long had she been tormented by thoughts of the royal advisor. It certainly did not make unlocking her powers any easier.
“Is there something on my face?” Impa fiddled with her hands anxiously. Zelda’s gaze had not gone unnoticed like she had hoped.
“Ah! Sorry, no… it’s nothing” Her feet became incredibly interesting right then, she simply could not tear her eyes away from them. Nor could she meet Impa’s gaze.
“You should get some rest, Princess. I will keep watch so please don’t worry.”
“…And when will you rest?”
“I’m not tired.” Impa lied, after a long pause.
Silence between the two was typically pleasant; today however, it felt tense.
“I want to stay up a while longer, I’ll warm up by the fire before I sleep.”
“As you wish, your majesty.”
The princess took a seat next to her advisor, a bit too close to her advisor actually. Moving away though, would admit that she had sat too close and things were awkward enough as is. Impa probably didn’t mind anyway, right? After all, the closer the princess was to her the easier it would be to protect her.
Despite her insistence to stay awake, Zelda fought an uphill battle against her drooping eyelids. Of course she was tired; she had spent all day on her feet, stressing about the power she still did not have. Her last thoughts before drifting off to sleep were about Impa: Why was she so patient with Zelda? Why did she always insist on protecting her when she had a knight to do so? Why wasn’t she pushing Zelda off of her shoulder? Why was she petting her head as she fell asleep at her side?
For Impa, the princess showing vulnerability around her was rare, yet absolutely welcome. She works entirely too hard, and was far too tough on herself, the advisor would say. Sleep had trouble finding her majesty. So if sleeping on Impa would allow her some proper rest, then so be it.
Once it was obvious that Zelda had slipped into a deep slumber, her advisor attempted to move her to a cot, so that she would not cramp her already stiff neck. Zelda however, was clearly unsatisfied with being removed from her advisor’s shoulder, as she clung to Impa with a strength she did not think possible.
“Well… now what…” Impa pondered, currently planked over the princess as if playing a game of twister. It would be difficult to pry herself from Zelda’s grip without bonking their foreheads together and lethargy made it difficult to continue troubleshooting. So she did the only logical thing, fell asleep right where Zelda held her.
Zelda, although surprised, did not move. White hair lay illuminated around Impa’s tranquil face in an ironic halo. Having her advisor, her best friend, her saving grace right here in her embrace was enough to satisfy her for a lifetime. And yet, it was not enough. The princess longed to reach her hand up: to brush aside the hair from the advisor’s face, to cusp her soft cheek, to caress her lips, to make her feel even just a fraction of Zelda’s love. Her mind however, hindered her heart, and her hand would not move from her side. So, to make up for it, she closed her eyes again and snuggled just a little closer to Impa… Zelda could have sworn she just heard a contented sigh.

I think I touched on this in another headcanon post but I'm making a direct one about it now. Zelda's preference in men is pretty different from what's considered proper by society's standards.
Instead of a knight with rippling muscles, she'd prefer a well rounded man. Soft men are cute.
Instead of a noble career such as, most importantly, other royalty, she'd prefer a baker. Simple job, and who doesn't love a man who can make delicious sweet bread?
She wants a man like that, who will always call her by name, or perhaps, a pet name. None of that "Princess" or "Queen" once she gets older.
Maybe it's because she wants a sense of normalcy in her life, rather than all the royal work that was, essentially, thrust upon her when Hyrule was saved. Though she's accepted her responsibility both as a Sage, and as the Princess of Hyrule, she's still a hopeless romantic. It's just that she does not fall easily.
