i just watched the tower, which is about a palestinian refugee and her family’s history.

after the movie a student who was a palestinian refugee came up and shared a bit about herself. in the movie the young refugee was given a key by her great (?) grandfather, i didn’t really understand why until this student said that all of these palestinian refugees all have these keys that they’ve passed down for when they return home.

the movie was made in 2018, as of right now i don’t think many of these refugees have their homes to go back to. that hit me right in the feels.

That new film Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken seems super generic and they also spoiled the whole plot in the trailers but the mermaids being evil *mwah* that is some good shit. I love the mermaids being depicted to how they are in folklore. Like in folklore the mermaids are vicious and recently mermaid characters are portrayed as good so having an evil mermaid was actually a really good thing. Too bad the rest of the movie looks so boring.

I wanna talk about Zephyr so spoilers for Film Z (after ch 654 or ep 578) it’s a really good movie I recommend it!

Zephyr is probably one of my favorite “filler” characters because it feels like he came right out of Oda’s head! (I don’t know that he didn’t I’m just assuming) he’s right up there with Vice Admiral Jonathan and ofc the legendary Condoriano! Anyway his backstory was really great and fit perfectly in the universe! I also loved how he analyzed/commentated on his opponents fighting styles like when he fights Kizaru and gives him a little critique on relying too heavily on his fruit powers. It shows that he never fully stopped being a teacher!

Although his backstory could’ve been fleshed out a little more. Like one of the warlords killed his men and took his arm! Ok, who was it? There’s only 7 of them which one? It would’ve felt more complete. I also didn’t care for the Neo Marines. I understand where they were coming from but it’s kinda another faction that ultimately doesn’t stand out against the Revolutionary Army. And the whole dyna stone thing didn’t feel like it fits in the world. Again I understand the thought process but with the end points and everything it felt less original than the main series.

I think they should’ve given him a backstory side chapter like they did with Shiki. A fully fleshed out backstory that focuses on him! Ofc the difference is Shiki is canon and Z is not.

Tl;dr

I like the character of Zephyr but Film Z had some plot points I wasn’t too fond of.

A teacher in Florida is being investigated by the state for ‘indoctrination’ after showing a Disney film which features a prominent gay character. The investigation comes after fifth grade teacher Jenna Barbee showed her class Disney’s 2022 animated movie Strange World as a “brain break”, following a morning of standardized testing. The film features Ethan, an openly gay character, and a romantic plot between Ethan and his crush, Diazo. On TikTok, the teacher said she chose to show the film because it fit in with the class’s curriculum, as they are currently learning about ecosystems. The LGBTQ+ element was not the reason she put the movie on, but described it as “harmless”. Barbee claims she was reported to the state by a school board member, who she says is on a “rampage” against any form of representation in schools and her daughter was in the classroom watching Strange World. A tweet by Barbee’s friend, Carl Zee, shows a letter from the Florida Department of Education which states the teacher is being investigated for “inappropriate conduct”. “If you have evidentiary witnesses or documents pertinent to the case, send them to this office no later than two weeks from receipt of this letter,” the letter states. “[The students] didn’t even know this was a big deal until the board member and the state made it a big deal. “They’re using it against me saying they’re ‘protecting the children’ and it’s for their safety. But what is this actually showing them?” Barbee questioned in the video. She said the investigation is more “traumatising” for the youngsters than the film was in the fist place. “But the minor representations, that have nothing to do with the movie, are such a big deal that now admin in is in their room, pulling their teacher out, calling the students one by one down to the office to interrogate them in the middle of my lessons,” she said. The teacher added that a number of her students had told her they are members of the LGBTQ+ community, prior to the film being shown.

hi again Carers of Zee's WIPs! i did a separate ask where i talked about underrated ships i'm writing about that can be found here

and so on this ask (thank u btw i love to yap 😭🙏🏾) let's talk about the head ship in charge joe'marr!! i'm currently writing 3 fics but one is kinda... so i'll talk about the two i like 😛

okay first is this silly fic that i dont have any snippets from just a description lol:

Tee asks to meet Joe’s girlfriend while they’re away in Louisiana.

so essentially i wanted this to be a super short fic told from Tee's perspective where he's been asking Joe since their rookie year about a girlfriend that he's always going to see on their byes and like offseason and Joe always indulges in his questions. but the silly part is that there is no girlfriend and Joe never told Tee the whole truth abt who he was seeing all those years 😭 so they have a game out in Louisiana and on the plane ride there Tee is like can I finally meet your gf and he figures it out when he sees how Joe is around Ja'Marr pregame.

some stuff im still figuring out abt this one is if i want Ja'Marr to play for the saints in this universe (shivers...) or if he's just living out in NOLA being a wag you know 🙏🏾 it'll come to me

the other fic that i'll share is abt them in college actually & in true zee joemarr fashion (that you just learned a few sentences ago) only joe plays football in this one & ja'marr hoops 😛

here's the description (mind you, the descriptions are just for me to write around so if it sounds corny... idk what to tell you but trust the process 😭)

Uno is playing March Madness basketball and Joe is preparing for the draft. Joe is falling (fast).

OKAY: so it takes place at LSU, mostly after the college football championship, between late January and March Madness. it's told from Joe's POV & they know each other previously, but get closer after Joe's season ends and he has time to start going to Ja'Marr's games.

i want it to be introspective of Joe trying to figure out what's going on between him and Ja'Marr but lowkey not realizing that even though Uno is entertaining him March Madness is a big deal for him and it gets really stressful and tense and yeah 🙏🏾

here are some snippets of this!!

when they meet:

“I’m Ja’Marr, by the way,” Justin’s company– Ja’Marr’s– voice cut into the sound of the tape (and registered later than Joe would like to admit). The room had previously been swamped with a tangible silence, so heavy that Joe had nearly omitted the reality of someone else being in the room from his memory.

“Joe,” he said plainly. He turned up the volume slightly so that Ja’Marr would get the idea that he was busy. The game was less than a week away and Joe was adamant on analyzing all of Florida’s games this season so that he would have a solid plan for practice in a few days.

“Justin told me you don’t talk much,” Ja’Marr moved to the couch and sat on the opposite end of Joe, “you watching Florida?”

Joe paused the film, the second time he’d done so this morning for interruption instead of study, at the realization of two things: he was not going to be able to get anything done with Ja’Marr chatting at him, and he liked the way Ja’Marr pronounced it Flo'da just then.

next excerpt is the first time Uno asks Joe to come to a game (after the cfb championship):

“Make sure you come to one of my games before you leave.”

As much as Joe liked Ja’Marr, and appreciated his company at the moment, he didn’t like basketball. At all. Generally, the regular season games were anticlimactic and pretty much identical. There were about three things you could do in basketball: pass, catch, and shoot. None of which excited Joe very much. When it came to basketball, his stance was that if he’s seen one game, he’s seen them all.

“I don’t know, I’m not really a basketball guy,” he trailed.

“That’s ‘cause you ain’t ever seen me play,” Ja’Marr stuck his pinky out, “I promise, it’ll be the best game you’ve been to.”

Hesitantly, Joe reached across the table and wrapped his pinky in Ja’Marr’s.

“Bet,” he smiled and bounced their laced fingers before letting go, “Our next home game is against Florida. I’ll send you my schedule.”

And, well, that would be unnecessary. Joe could easily access their schedule from the school’s athletic website. But, Ja’Marr was a little too enthusiastic at the thought of him coming to a game, and he got to hear him say Flo'da for the first time in a while, so he didn’t mention it. Instead, he said, “I’ll look out for it.”

random excerpt i like:

It’s hard to tell from the stands just how bad a foul is, and shit, if Joe were out there he would flop too. He couldn’t imagine getting physical on the court, bruises, scratches, the whole nine yards, and not getting any calls.

He reaches out and examines Ja’Marr’s arm up close. His fingers lightly brush over the scratches on his bicep, wincing at their severity. Ja’Marr all but flinched at the contact but kept himself steady under Joe’s touch. And to think he almost got a tech for pleading his case. Bullshit.

His eyes dragged further down to where Ja’Marr’s sleeve was earlier, tattoos on display without it now. His fingers followed his eyes, tracing over all the ink he didn’t understand. Ja’Marr was so placid under Joe’s touch, his skin too soft, too inviting.

“Looks like it hurts.” Scratches, tattoos, none of his teammates defending him. It all looks like it hurts. Joe contained himself.

Ja’Marr tilts his head slightly, angling his arm for a better look, “it do?”

“They foul you a lot.”

He smiles, “they do that when you good.”

Despite the on-court protests, he relished the way other teams guarded him in a way Joe didn’t understand. As a spectator, the fouls were a little hard to watch. He found himself holding his breath more than once when Ja’Marr drew contact.

“You think I played good, Burrow?”

“I don’t understand a lot of the rules,” Joe started, “but you had a lot of points.”

“Do you think,” Ja’Marr lowers his voice as if the place is occupied by anyone other than them, “did I look good?”

There weren’t too many things that could fluster Joe or cause him to lose his composure, and it was apparent that Ja’Marr Chase would constantly be the one to find new ways to accomplish just that. The question was miles away from what Joe was expecting, lightyears even. It left his brain scrambling to form a group of coherent words, let alone a full, thoughtful response.

Honestly, the answer was yes. Hell yes. His ball handling skills, no look passes, fast-break shots in transition, how vocal he was directing his teammates while bringing the ball down the court. There was something very attractive about it.

What happened when you wish on a star?

In the kingdom of Roses, everyone knows wishes do come true, thanks to their beloved King Magnifico, granting all their wishes overnight while they sleep. Everyone trusts in that, except Asha, an artistic and quick-witted young girl, for she knows in her heart that her deceased grandfather never got his wish granted. On her 18th birthday, when it was time to give her wish, Asha discovers a terrible secret, the king and queen are not what they seemed. With no one else to turn to, she makes a wish upon a star... And the star answered.

Now let's talk about the cover itself.

At the bottom we have Asha on top of a tree, with Valentino. She's catching up to Aster, right above her. These 3 elements the tree, Asha and Valentino are illuminated by the light that comes from Aster, a yellow light and are shaded by purplish blue shadows precisely because yellow and blue/purple are complementary colors divided on the color wheel and this is a characteristic of my art I like to make colored shadows and not black ones.

Aster has a thick outline and no shadows because he is in 2d, while the rest of the universe is in 3d.

This pose was inspired by one of the promotional posters for the Wish film.

I followed the same colors as the sky and wanted to place the wish balls and star sparkles making a circle around Asha.

I tried to leave Asha and Aster more to the left because the protagonists, in film posters, should always be more to the left.

Magnificent and Amaya are appearing in the sky, in the background, precisely to represent this subtle threat, but always existing throughout Anny's story. Magnificent and Amaya may not always be present in the same place as Aster, Asha and Valentino, but they are always watching, aiming and wishing for the star.

Unlike the film, Anny makes it clear that these two are the villains of the story and to rescue this I wanted to bring triangular shapes to their faces precisely because a triangle represents a warning of danger, sharp pointy things that can kill you and do you a lot of harm — this is even the case. a form often used in classic Disney villains. I also rescued the use of the color green for the villains, well seen in all Disney films; That's why both the light that illuminates them and the shadows are green, one lighter and the other darker.

Making this cover was a lot of fun, it was a great experience that taught me a lot of things!

Asha's Animal Side Kick

It was either between a possum, ferret, or a great eared nightjar/type of bird, but either way, I had to go with the possum.

I liked the light brown possum a lot personally since I thought it was really cute yk??

It was also based off of this possum:

OKOK, you may be wondering why I changed Valentino, or Bonsai into a possum.

There are 2 reasons:

Numero Uno:

VALENTINO IS FUCKING UGLY

I think my friend @sewerpalette said it best here:

Nothing can convince me otherwise. His design is just SO ugly to look at. It is not pleasing.

And it doesn't help that I wanna punch his stupid fucking face like it is so punch-able

OKAY SURE, the concept versions of Valentino is cute...but ever but I didn't like how I drew goats in my style. It could be just that I'm not good at drawing them, but I also didn't like my color pallet I did for him, which was a lot like what Bonsai has color pallet wise, and it fitted Bonsai more than Valentino.

Numero Dos:

ESMERALDA HAS A GOAT SIDE KICK.

OR BETTER YET, WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN IT.

It is basically a repeat of what we have already seen, which I didn't like.

Just because you aged down a goat does not make it ORIGINAL.

Its okay to have Asha have a pet goat in the other rewrites though I don't MIND AT ALL. ITS YOUR AU U DO WHAT EVER, IM JUST MAINLY TALKING ABOUT MY ICK WITH THE MAIN FILM. IT JUST REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING ELSE.

What I'm trying to say is that Valentino feels like a refrence to Huntch Back of Notre Dom, which this movie has a thing with adding stuck out refrences instead of making it subtle. I mean I know it was a 100 year aniversary, just make it more subtle though so people can rewatch it and find refrences they didn't notice first time watching.

Anyways....

Some fun Facts about Bonsai:

Bonsai is actually a little dwarf, and the runt of his family. Asha adopted him when she found out Amaya told Charo (Charo is a lynx btw) to get rid of them all since she thought they were rats (even though they are fucking HUGE) (PLUS IT IS TO EMPATHESE ON THE FACT THAT THEY ARE MISTAKEN FOR RODENTS WHEN THEY AREN'T, THEY ARE APART OF THE MARSUPIALS FAMILY AND THEY GET RID OF RODENTS/EAT THEM)😭

(I might actually make him slightly bigger than how I drew Bonsai, but who knows yk?)

So Asha took the responsibility of taking care of the little Possum, since she didn't want the possum to grow up alone, and so that she can have some company.

IT TOOK A LONG WHILE for Bonsai to warm up and trust Asha, but in the end, he saw her good nature and swore to protect Asha like how Asha protected him from getting eaten from Charo. Which is why he dislikes Star Boy A LOT (mainly because he doesn't trust how this creature can literally transform into anything and doesn't want him to end up being something like Charo 😭)

He is just a little guy that wants to make sure his friend doesn't get hurt by a celestial force.

This is basically how I imagine how they both would meet:

To get this part out of the way, if I end up having Bonsai speak, it would sound like a child, since I DREADED when the goat started...TALKING LIKE A GROWN ASS MAN LIKE NO PLEASE NO. And it would be more adorable yk?? :3

Jan 2024 Wk 1

Ongoing Series - Thai

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 9 of 12 - This show is really earning its chops, and these actors are executing beautifully. I think this is a great BL, and it reminds me quite a bit of ATOTS, only the physical comfort between the actors is more genuine and easy to watch. Unfortunately a guitar came out. Nice communication tho.

That was a very lovely romantic sex scene. Very prettily done. Classy boys, very classy.

Gah what a beautiful final scene with Day saying the last thing he wants to see is Mhork. Pure unadulterated romance of the highest order.

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 7 of 12 - If killer, why hot? Poor Tarn compelled to try to rescue everyone else from their fate, because he cannot save himself from his.

Meanwhile Phaya is finally learning that you catch more water snakes with honey lube than vinegar.

Stellar confession from Phaya brutally honest and very fated mates.

And another lovely sex scene, so I guess that was a vision and not a fantasy Tharn had.

Lets be clear those two shows were GREAT everything else this week was kinda blah.  

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 6 of 12 - I find the backstory very odd. Are they twins? What happened to Blue? Am I meant to care? Do I care?��

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 10 of 12 - I mostly just feel sorry for First. He’s so rightfully confused. Zee/Sprite keeps blowing hot and cold because they two different people! The after sex cuddle was cute. 

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 8 of 14 - Love getting more JeffAlan. Also I switch favorite character allegiances in the trash watch happening here.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 6 of 12 - Didn’t air this week and I hardly noticed. 

You and My Stars YT 1 of 2(?) - school kids, love triangle, it’s cute enough.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) 1626 ep 20 of 24 - Just so boring. 3/10

VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 8 of 10 - I’m not into the love triangle. Although I kind of like the new suitor, he’s honest and a good communicator. I appreciate these things in a BL boy. I Became the Main Role of a BL (Japan Sun Gaga) ep 1-3 - AKA BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen - A rising star is paired with an (older) former child actor (doesn’t think he’s good enough) in a BL series. It’s fun, built on a dynamic of off screen paralleling the on screen, so near constantly meta. All the tropes are there but are as a result of the filming process. The star turns out to be obsessed with the former actor and very dorky about it. In fact, everyone in this show is a little gremlin weirdo (affectionate). There’s tons of scenery chewing miscommunication drama, slapstick, voice over head hopping, and eccentric sides characters. “And he comes with feathers” applies to a number of my friends. You know I don’t like stories around fan obsession, but otherwise this was enjoyable. 8/10

A nice start to the JBL year. Keep em coming, Japan.

The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). I don't think even the perfect single dimple can motivate me to watch. Word is... it's terrible.

7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes. I'm waiting to binge if safe.

Some notes:

Santa had some decent showings, but I am struggling to see the vision with his character in Perfect 10 Liners He's removed rom Rookies because he's not a rookie anymore. Same with Mix.

Phuwin was removed from the list entirely because his abilities are very limited. It seems like the role of Pi was made for him, which is why he performed so well then.

First was moved down because I find that he struggles with some of the roles he's typecasted into. He's not completely believable as a bad boy and there's something about him playing opposite Khao that takes away the feeling of him playing a particular character.

Removed Win, Earth Cooheart, and Zee from Honorable Mentions because Win has not impressed me, and Earth and Zee seem to have regressed.

After re-watching Bad Buddy and other Nanon-projects I realized that what made Nanon special in Bad Buddy was his chemistry with Ohm. Otherwise, he's not on the same level as Gun and them.
