book annotaters what highlighters are we using? cause i’m an EXTENSIVE highlighter and i always face the same problem where halfway into the book my highlighter dries out on account of i’ve used it so much. as if it’s my fault that i think every sentence is important
#and don’t say zebra midliners cause those were my first mistake.#not even joking i’m three chapters into the souls of black folks using a brand new highlighter and it’s almost dead.#jules.txt

Grant's zebra Equus quagga boehmi
Observed by hikuta, CC BY-NC
This photo shows very well just how bright red zebra foals' darker stripes can be, before they turn black with age; foals often have noticeably fuzzier coats than adults.
In addition to the red-striped, fuzzy foal, the adults here show classic features of Grant's zebras Equus quagga boehmi:
stripes are broad and relatively few in number, especially on the hindquarters
stripes continue all the way down the limbs
side stripes do not contact the dark dorsal midline stripe
brown patch on nose

Hello!! You have beautiful art!! Just curious, what supplies do you use for your traditional work?

thank you for the ask!! most of my art supplies are 5-10+ years old so about half are dry/running out, so this is giving me an excuse to reorganize and throw away my empty supplies, so thank you :D
common supplies / my go-to's
what you see in most of my art is a red Ticonderoga erasable checking pencil, this is the best sketching pencil of all time i swear by it. ohuhu markers, prisma and crayola colored pencils, various colored ball point pens, papermate flair felt tip (i love these), staedtler fine liners (pink one is the best for blush), a lot of different highlighters, zebra midliners, zebra gel pens, sharpies, crayola markers.
other supplies
posca pens, dry erase markers (good for quick black color fills), microns (they have run out tho), straedtler 2mm mechanical pencil, neon pencils (don't know what brand), various mechanical pencils. gellyroll and signo white gel pens but those often aren't working so i use generic white paint for highlights sometimes. winsor & newton watercolor but it's very aged and doesn't work as well anymore
...and that's most of it! i have such a hard time throwing away empty or broken supplies, but i was able to get rid of at least 10% of everything in the photo and organize a bit better, so thank you for the ask!!
#i really do struggle to throw things away#like i expect the ink to magically refill or the pens to magically unbreak#not art#ask#the small red pencils are almost 10 years old and the color has deepened with age and isn't as smooth but i kind of like them that way

Stationery brands that are actually worth the money
As a working class student, I often don't have the budget to buy the trendy, big name stationery. Every once in a while, I manage to try out the products people are swearing on. Some of them have been pretty disappointing and some of them have been amazing. Here are the ones that have been worth it, at least for me.
Zebra Midliner - When it comes to highlighters you can definitely use the cheap no name ones but I found Zebra Midliners are not just an aesthetic option, they actually do have mild ink that doesn't damage my notebook or textbook pages and the colours are really pleasant. I also like their Sarasa gel pens. A cheaper alternative that also works is Frixion highlighters, they have a different texture because they are erasable but they're very mild and come in light colours too
Midori Paper - Holy shit this is the best paper I ever wrote on! Beautifully smooth paper, almost no pens smear or bleed through, the grid is light blue so it doesn't distract from the writing, there's a mark every 10 lines to make counting easier, they also come with lines, dots etc but I personally swear on grid paper
Tombow Fudesunoke Double Sided Grey-Black Brush Pen - I have some of the Tombow ABT brush pens for art reasons (different from study related stationery imo) and they're good but the double sided brush pen is so good I want to eat it, it's the perfect size for writing or drawing, the ink is beautiful and it doesn't smear or bleed, it lasts a surprisingly long time without drying out or the tip losing quality (unlike the ABT brush pens tbh)
Leuchtturm 1917 - I feared Leuchtturm would be a disappointment like Moleskine was (which is so bad don't buy them) but I am on my second bullet journal by Leuchtturm (2020 to Early 2023 and now Early 2023 to god knows when), they have a pocket, plenty of pages with good quality (not as good as midori but good for a bullet journal), two bookmarks

How do you take your notes?? Love your blog <3
Thank you!
I use a modified version of the Cornell note taking system! I’ll explain it below.

I use multiple things to take my notes:
Black fountain pen (Lamy Safari medium nib or Platinum Preppy fine nib)
Multicolored gel pens (Zebra Sarasa, 0.5)
Highlighters (Zebra Midliners 5ct)
Clear stickie notes of various sizes
Black permanent pen (for writing on plastic, 0.3)
Mechanical pencil and Eraser (Pentel Graphgear 500, 0.5; General’s Factis Eraser)
These all have a specific meaning to me within my notes so that I can easily see what I am looking for on a page at a glance.
I take my main notes in pencil so I can easily change them as I need to, I often mis-spell things so this is useful for that or if I got information wrong and need to change it
Gel Pens:
I use these to separate different sections of notes that are within the same larger note module. I also use them to add information in margins when they are big enough as they are easily distinguishable from the pencil.
Fountain Pen:
I use this to do my main heading and date for normal notes, and for notes that do not directly apply to the class but are still in that classes notebook. (My history notebook has history notes in pencil and the notes we took on writing in fountain pen. I know I’ll be using the writing notes a lot so I want to find them easily)
Highlighters:
The highlighters I use come in a five pack, and there are green, tan, grey, light pink, and brown colors. Each one has a highlighter tip and a bullet tip.
Green: highlight definitions or very important information. I only ever use this color in this way so that if I see green flipping through my notebook I know I need to go back at look at it no matter what
Tan: Context, sub definitions, or extra information. This is the color I go to after the green
Grey and Pink: I use these colors interchangeably as the page needs to highlight things I personally think I will want to go back and read
Brown: This color is too dark for normal highlighting so I use it to separate different note modules
Plastic Stickies and Pen:
These are for extra context when I have no room and for adding diagrams. I most often use them for when I have taken a full page of notes from the textbook before class and the professor adds extra information during lecture. I prefer the clear notes to the (more ‘aesthetic’) brown and tan ones because I can see through them and more easily remove them or lift them up to see the notes underneath. I do need a special pen to mark on them without smudging, but that is not an issue for me.
As the are clear, if I want to add a diagram, I can pull it up on my phone, add a stickie over it, and trace it with the pen. So no more messy diagrams.
Note taking:
I have two different times when I am taking notes and the things I do change order depending on that. If I am taking notes from something like a textbook, a documentary, or a slideshow on my laptop, I do all my highlighting and extras as I am taking the actual notes. When I am in lecture, I take my notes all in pencil except for the note sections in pen, then go back during breaks in the lecture and highlight/add where I need to.
I take very very extensive notes, so do not be alarmed if you don’t have a lot of notes. You want to have at least (In order of importance):
Definitions and Big Ideas
Important Context
Diagrams
After you have those, you can add things that you want to remember, things that are less important but maybe still good to know, and extra facts or figures.
My note taking follows this pattern:
Section Title (pen)
Definition word - definition (always highlighted in green)
Idea (level of importance determines green, tan, pink or grey, or no highlight)
Sub ideas
Bulleted under idea
Sometimes the sub ideas also have sub ideas that are bulleted under them
I don’t bother with the summary in the Cornell system as I don’t usually have time in a lecture to do them, if you have time and want to do it, go for it!
Handwriting
My handwriting can vary from a little shaky but very legible to scribbled based on how fast I am writing. If you don’t have great handwriting, don’t worry about it as long as you can read it later. It is not easy to notice this right after you have written it because you know what it says, but if you even think it might be a little too messy, erase it and write it again. You’ll thank yourself later.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop them in the askbox!

Hourly Comics 2025! Had to add some finishing touches before I could post it - but I did sketch and line it on the same day (which I only consider important because I wanted to cement the things I'd like to share about the day On that day, and not have to rely on my bad memory later).
Erasable colored pencil, sharpie ultra fine point, zebra midliner markers, digital assembly and touch-ups.

Thinking of you and hoping your first day is okay 💜💜💜
thank you 💕 first day was chaotic as per usual. completion has been god awful and it doesnt help that literally half my table doesn't touch their food. also I was served a morning star spicy black bean burger which I refuse to eat after being forced to one for weeks on end at a previous place. also my psychiatrist is super pregnant and is leaving soon, my therapist (who is apparently a man which is new to me, I've only ever worked with women) is out for the week AND a care coordinator randomly left so they were scrambling to find someone to be my coordinator. classic high turnover at a treatment center. also i found out you can't have pens that click OR pens that have clips on them which is essentially all pens??? and I can't have my zebra midliners either because they have clips. this is ridiculous and wasn't in the orientation manual at all or else i would have planned better 😭 also one last thing, my psych literally asked me "do you want an ng?" and when I didn't answer she said "you can do this without one, I don't think you need it" like huh?? not sure what I was supposed to get from that interaction.

Okay I found a recent though pop culture article on it. No cats can't see them nor can they be seen under UV light. Scientists believe the lines are the patterns cells followed during embryonic development. Notably the swirls never cross the midline of your body. Many skin conditions including moles follow these lines tho so if you want to play connect the dots you may be able to simulate your stripes
Imagine an alien sharing a cool human fact they just learned like ”hey guys did you know that the silvery markings on humans actually aren’t true stripes? They’re called stretch marks, they happen when the human is growing fast enough to actually outgrow their skin, which is apparently something that just fucking happens to almost all of them at some point of their life.”
and another one is like ”wait so you’re saying humans don’t have stripes.”
”actually they do, but the stripes are invisible. There’s genetic code that’d give them stripes but they’re just the same colour as the rest of the skin. So the visible stripes are not real stripes and the real stripes are invisible.”
”I swear if you tell me one more weird human thing today I’m beating your ass.”
