Good evening Europe!
It's that magical time of the year again when we all come together to trash each others' musical tastes!
The point system has changed many times over the years, and as various countries have come and gone, it is hard to determine who did "the best" based on the points they got alone as, since the maximum available points doubled with the jury and televote scores no longer being combined, post 2016 entries would have an obvious advantage and, likewise, the contests with 40+ participants would also have more maximum available points to give so a country getting 200 points in 2004 is not the same as another getting 200 points in 2009 or 2016.
But if we divide the points each entry got by the maximum available points for the respective year it competed, we get a percentage score that can easily be measured against entries from years with differing point systems.
So, for example, in 2009 42 countries participated. The maximum points each country can award is of course 12 and you can't vote for yourself. So 41 × 12 = 492. Let's then take Norway's total of 387 points and divide it by the 492 total of maximum available points. We get 78.6, meaning Norway and Alexander Rybak amassed 78.6% of the total points in 2009!
In the case of tie breaks the entry that placed higher in its respective year wins the tie break and if there's still a tie I used rules similar to the actual contest; the winner of a tie is the entry that received more points from televoting. If there are no split results available to the public, the entry that received points from more countries, then the country that received more 12 points, then 10 points all the way down to 1. If the tie cannot be broken in this way, the entry that performed earlier wins the tie break.
I've set 2004 as the "beginning of time", if you will, because that's when I started watching Eurovision and because there also had to be some sort of limit to how far back I would go with this 🤣
With that very long-winded explanation of my measuring tactics out of the way, shall we see our current Top 100 before new entries are added after the 2023 Grand Final is over?

my turn my turn!

(sorry this is late, I was vexed by spotify)
17
oh hey it's me! *waves*
also how is this only #17 it should be top ten hang on i think i saw

it may not be more accurate but it feels like it is, you know? plus this makes it my birthday song, at least for the birthday I tell the internet about :)
anyway this is not necessarily my favourite song by phoenix (if only because I could never pick just one) but it is for sure my favourite guitar solo, sometimes I will just close my eyes and feel it lifting my soul (not when I'm driving, then I just turn it up and terrorise the local wildlife). in a way it's kind of the inverse of fata verde in that it feels like there's a lot going on - not overcrowded, just full. I think it's the splashy drums. I do love a good splashy drum :)
(also I love that spotify misspelled the title so it's not *the* caladrius bird but *a* caladrius bird, like just some random bird off the street *waves again*)
34
is it ironic that you in particular would get one of the pillars of romanian folklore >:)
my appreciation for Miorița is already established through many shitposts but I particularly like this presentation, it all kind of ebbs and flows and there's a lovely bit of tension between the instruments playing in 4 and the vocals in 3, it's hypnotic and I love it. Also the beginning puts me in mind of Larks' Tongues in Aspic pt 1 which might just be me idk but it's never a bad thing.
one day I am definitely going to hit them with this at folk group, I could do it right now if I had my orchestra and a photocopied translation available for the audience and if we weren't on break until February 😭
97
this one is another album track (it's the first track on the album and the first of five short interludes between the actual songs) - a lot of people don't like them apparently but I do, there's a lot of stylistic variety on the album and I think the interludes kind of tie it all together. This starts off slowly and gets very full-on at the end, kind of like the album in a way :)
incidentally if you listen to this you have to stay for the whole album, I don't make the rules >:)
#ok you don't have to listen to the whole thing but you should consider it#asks answered#thanks for asking :)#spotify wrapped#i think this was the last one

Eurovision Reviews: Semi final 1 2022
It's Eurovision season again, wooooooooooooo!!!
1: Albania: Ronela Hajati - Sekret
This is a complete mess and I mean that as a compliment.
6/10
2: Latvia: Citi Zēni - Eat Your Salad
This song will have all of Europe screaming "PUSSY! at the same time, and we should all be grateful for that.
8/10
3: Lithuania: Monika Liu - Sentimentai
This song makes me think of a movie scene - the year is 1972, there's a smoky jazz club somewhere in Eastern Europe, and a spy is there for an important secret meeting with a local crime boss, and of course, while all this is happening, Monika is on stage singing this song. Someone probably gets shot at the end. The song just takes me away to another era, I guess.
7/10
4: Switzerland: Marius Bear - Boys Do Cry
I'm not one of those fans who automatically thinks ballads are boring, but I think ballads require an outstanding vocal performance and/or impressive staging, and/or a really unique performer to really work in the competition. This song has none of those things, so that makes it the most boring song of the year.
2/10
5: Slovenia: LPS - Disko
This would probably be really impressive at a high school talent show, but it's nowhere near good enough for the Eurovision stage. It's just amateur hour, these kids aren't ready for an audience this big.
2/10
6: Ukraine: Kalush Orchestra - Stefania
Nobody does it like Ukraine. Hip hop in Eurovision hasn't been too successful historically, but if any hip hop song ever stands a chance of winning it's this one, and that is because of its own merits in songwriting, production and staging, even without the massive wave of sympathy votes it would be a deserving winner.
10/10
7: Bulgaria: Intelligent Music Project - Intention
Some local dads are playing some songs at the local pub - their cover songs are alright, but once they announce that it's time for an original song, the audience runs for the hills.
3/10
8: Netherlands: S10 - De Diepte
"Dadadadadadada. Ooooooh. Aaaaaaaaah. Dadadadada." I think this song is absolutely beautiful, and I love hearing the Dutch language, but I wish it had a little more lyrical content and less repeated nonsense syllables. I'm just nitpicking though, this sounds really great.
8/10
9: Moldova: Zdob şi Zdub & Fraţii Advahov - Trenuleţul
I love Zdob si Zdub, and I have loved them for 17 years. Some of my readers haven't even been alive for that long ☠️ As a song, this is my favorite of their three entries - the Ramones reference is so much fun, and I actually really love the revamped version which adds some extra punk rock elements. With all this said, this is by far their weakest staging, so I'm worried about this song being their first NQ...
8/10
10: Portugal: Maro - Saudade, saudade
There's a very fine line between atmospheric and sleepy, and I'm not sure where this one falls.
5/10
11: Croatia: Mia Dimšić - Guilty Pleasure
I actually really enjoy this song, but I can't think of a single thing to say about it. It's cute but inoffensive, so it's going nowhere in the competition.
6/10
12: Denmark: Reddi - The Show
This is the most aggressively okay song of the year. It's fine, it's whatever.
5/10
13: Austria: LUM!X & Pia Maria - Halo
Are the kids bringing back 90s eurodance now? This sounds ridiculous, it's too fast, her singing is way too high pitched, and I would call the production horribly dated if it wasn't made by someone born in, like, 2003. There's always room for cheesy dance music in this competition, though.
5/10
14: Iceland: Systur - Með hækkandi sól
In recent years, I have come to expect a lot from Iceland, and this is a huge disappointment. It's the color beige in musical form, and don't get me wrong, I would definitely wear a nice beige linen shirt to the office, but I wouldn't wear it to Eurovision.
3/10
15: Greece: Amanda Tenfjord - Die Together
I love the a capella vocoder vibe this song has going in the beginning, but then it doesn't really go anywhere with it, it just becomes a beautiful but basic ballad. I wish the instrumentation felt more unconventional in the rest of the song, the dramatic ending feels a little bland. I'm nitpicking because this is a really good song which could have been great with some small changes.
8/10
16: Norway: Subwoolfer - Give That Wolf a Banana
It feels really weird when the biggest joke act of the year is also the most well made EDM song in recent eurovision memory. I wish they did much more with the staging though, it feels pretty underwhelming right now.
6/10
17: Armenia: Rosa Linn - Snap
I usually really hate this specific type of Lumineers-style acoustic guitar music but this one feels okay. I think I really like Rosa Linn as a singer, I just get a good vibe from her, so I can ignore how dull the production is on this song. The staging is probably one of the best of the year, so it gets bonus points for that.
6/10

My fave eurovision entries 2022 except for my country (i’m italian 🇮🇹)
Trenuletul by Zdob si Zdub & Advahov Brothers / Moldova 🇲🇩 - I love the folk vibe of this song, I feel like I could dance to it with a lot of friends while happily drunk ahahah. It’s so catchy and the video is funny, I laughed at the part when he unfolds the rug and it’s a portrait of a Moldovan king, it was so unexpected!
Eat your salad by Citi Zeni / Latvia 🇱🇻 - I already know this song by heart. The lyrics are funny but in a smart way and I liked the idea of the music video, the vintage 70s dating show vibe.
Give that wolf a banana by Subwoolfer / Norway 🇳🇴 - This is what does the fox say all over again! Music’s catchy and the lyrics are hilarious (“if you don’t like the name Keith imma call you… Jim” fuckin kills me everytime i swear ahahah). I also love the costumes and the retro space aesthetic of their video.
Stephania by Kalush Orchestra / Ukraine 🇺🇦 - Yeah, i love eastern european sounds, as you may have guessed. Especially when they’re reinterpreted in a modern key as it happens with this song. I really like the rap mixed with traditional music and the flute is otherworldly. Their outfits look great too!

Apologies to Armenia and Azerbaijan, no apologies to Mel fest, I gave them a chance
Fulenn - Alvan and Ahez (France) - this was love at first listen and it's been on repeat for two weeks now, I was so happy when they were chosen
Give that wolf a banana - Subwoolfer (Norway) - I love this too ok. Maybe yellow is the secret ingredient, Fulenn has also yellow/golden cover
Stefania - Kalush orchestra (Ukraine) - Ukrainian check, traditional vibes check, catchy part check, bringing something different also check also it's about the mom awww
SloMo - Chanel (Spain) - this was on my playlist since the end of january, will be forever probably. Her performance also lives in my head rent-free, bonus! there was a moment when she went yo siempre estoy rrreadyyy she was so cute and happy and I CAN'T FIND THAT MOMENT I don't know which performance that was 😢
River - Krystian Ochman (Poland) and Hope - Stefan (Estonia) - I'm putting these two together because I like them for the same reason, it's a nice English song. I keep getting them mixed up as well, it may as well be one song
Llámame - wrs (Romania) - it wormed its way into my head and it won't leave, dance tracks are always welcome anyway
Sekret - Ronela Hajati (Albania), point for not-english as always, nice vocals plus energy plus it's catchy, live should be interesting
In corpore Sano - Konstrakta (Serbia) - also wormed it's way in my head and WON'T LEAVE, there's something so captivating about her performance, you have to sit down and observe, I'm curious what they will do with big stage
Yall gonna hate me for this but Trenuleţul - Zdob si Zdub (Moldova) - I want to be on that train with them, Moldova always brings something crazy to the table, love them for that
Token no 10 because it needs to be an even number and it may win anyway Brividi - Mahmood and Blanco (Italy) - look, this gives me Sobral 2017 vibes except I was feeling something warm and fuzzy then and now I'm mostly reactionless, maybe that will change. Yes it's a nice song, yes they sound good, yes it's Italian but I feel it's overhyped because the bar is kinda low this year. There are so many better ballads(?) from before, place this next to IL Volo for example and it doesn't stand a chance. Soldi is also better. Non mi avete fatto niente was better, maybe? More energetic anyway. Occidentali's karma is better, I said what I said. Brividi winning opens an interesting paradox for me - Italy winning reminds me of when Italy didn't win with better songs and now I'm cranky

ESC 2022 - my top 10
Happy Eurovision week folks. I finalized my top 10 Eurovision list weeks ago, but I just never thought about actually posting about it here. Until now. I have fully embraced the Eurovision takeover of this blog. My kdrama followers will just have to bear with it a bit longer. I would say that I am sorry... but I am not. This is my civic duty as a European.
10 - Netherlands

This is a ballad heavy year I feel and this is probably my favorite ballad of the year. I enjoy Greece a lot, but damn wouldn't I just enjoy it more in Greek. And S10 is singing in Dutch, which I think is just wonderful. It's atmospheric and melancholy and it comes across very well without being in English. There seems to be enough going on here where I am not bored and it does not leave me cold ether. Every ballad get’s a big plus if it’s not sung in english. I do worry about it being underwhelming on stage tho.
9 - Lithuania

Monika Lui is a goddess, I adore her so much. Sentimentai is just a very chill vibe, it is so classy, almost sensual in it’s presentation and very atmospheric and it's in Lithuanian which just adds to the magic of it all. I liked the staging of the national final and Monika is so charming that I hope it translates well to people at home on Tuesday.
8 - Serbia

This is an performance art and something that is destined to become one of the eurovision moments of this years contest. I adore this. This is different, this is odd but in a good way. It's not in english. It's a Serbian woman washing her hands for 3 minutes. This is just so great. And Konstrakta is such a stunner. She is an artist, she is a legend and she is the moment. I like her performance maybe a bit more than the song, but whenever it comes on I enjoy myself a lot. You got to clap along to Biti zdrava bit.
7 - Spain

A standard, high-energy, extremely well choreographed, maybe a bit paint by number fun pop song is a must at eurovision for me. It brings the party. It's fun. I enjoy a good dancy pop song. Chanel is so good on stage, it's a joy to watch, this is going to be a moment for sure. It's just fun. There has to be at least one of these in every eurovision and Spain brought it for them. I hope Chanel brings Spain a very good result. She deserves it. Because watching this at Benidormfest was spectacular and it will also be so at eurovision.
6 - Austria

This is such a basic, edm dance track. It's bit dated even. But damn, I have a good time listening to it. I do worry about how this is going to turn out live tho. And it has slipped in my ranking a bit since it came out. It's just fun. I enjoy this a lot. I am just a simple girl that likes fun pop. What can I say.
5 - Czech Republic

I am hoping the Czechs can get a good result with this one, because it's a bop. It's simply just such a fun song. And from the rehearsal footage it looks like it's going to be very good live. I can't wait. And the band I am Domi just look like such nice, lovely people. I wish them the world and a good eurovision results.
4 - Moldova

Moldova always brings something fun to Eurovision, they just seem to get the spirit of the contest and don't take it too seriously ether and Zdob si Zdub are Eurovision legends. They were the first ever act that Moldova sent to Eurovision, they came back in 2011, and they are back with another bop. I love a good eastern European folk song. It's extremely fun. Eurovision needs at least one of these types of song each year, I think. It's a must! A fiddle AND an accordion. Oh this is some good stuff. This is pure fun. It puts a smile on my face every time.
3 - San Marino

I love the little chaos micro nation of San Marino at Eurovision. They brought us Senhit and Fo Rida last year, in 2019 we got the iconic disco dad that is Serhat and now they give us the one and only Achille Lauro with some more Italian glam rock. I mean what's not to like?
I am of course familiar with Lauro from Sanremo and I have been waiting for him to go to Eurovision ever since Sanremo 2020. I enjoy a lot of his songs and stripper is no exception. It’s not his best song maybe, but it’s still very much him (which I enjoy) and very fun. I think we need a bit of Italian glam rock every year at eurovision. We have ballads and dance pop every year, so why not? I have previous attachment to him so that also probably plays into me having San Marino this high on my list. But I just enjoy him so much as an artist and I know he will BRING IT on stage. He is a true performer more so than a singer. And I am going to enjoy every minute of it.
2 - France

A rave song with some folky, traditional sounds thrown into it sung in a minority language? yes please! There is honestly nothing about this that I don't utterly love. This is what I want from Eurovision (or one of the things). This is just so great. It stands out, it picks up where Go_A left off. I demand that we get at least one of these songs at eurovision every year from here on out.
1 - Ukraine.

There are moments when I think France has become my favorite song of esc 2022 but then Stefania comes on and the flute solo starts playing and my heart just soars with that melody. It's so great. This is what I want from Eurovision. There is just something about eastern european folk music at eurovision that just does things to me and I like the rap part as well. It's a nice mix of modern and traditional stuff. This is what Eurovision is about. It was the same with Go_A last year. I know people are going to say that they won because of the war if they actually manage to win the whole thing. But the song is good, it stand out from the rest and Ukraine just always brings it at Eurovision. They are the best eurovision nation imho.

I mentioned in a tag thing that this was the first song I ever sang at folk group and I was so nervous I nearly walked out (the door is right there so I could have). In the end I had to close my eyes to get through it D: but everyone was very supportive and said lovely things about me, so the next month I roped in my husband on violin so I could sing it again and this time actually told people what it was about (it is about Bucovina hope that helps)
I really do like this version but lately I can't listen to the album without wondering what it would sound like with proper basslines (sorry that was mean) (but justified) (sorry)
22
I would absolutely sing this at folk group if I had a backing band but instead I have to sing it in the car, my life is so tragic why do i not have my own orchestra following me around at all times 😭
69
This one is only here because I've listened to the album so much (usually I throw everything onto my "liked songs" playlist and spam it all year but not this year idk why). It's fun though, it's only about 90 seconds long and has some very cool percussion
100
I have previously banged on about New Model Army (short version: you should) and I can't remember whether this was one of the songs I recommended. It's more resigned than angry and it feels like a hot dry wind, like this one day in Canberra when I was helping my parents clean up after the fires and stepping outside felt like stepping into a fan-forced oven, which is to say it's very evocative

Since I’m here now anyway and absolutely no one asked; here’s my current Eurovision 2022 top 40. This list will change!
Teasing with this unexpected top 10 and then the rest is under the cut! There’s some comments at the end if you’re curious about all of my unpopular opinions!
1. Montenegro - Vladana - Breathe 2. Australia - Sheldon Riley - Not The Same 3. Sweden - Cornelia Jakobs - Hold Me Closer 4. France - Alvan & Ahez - Fulenn 5. Poland - Ochman - River 6. Czech Republic - We Are Domi - Lights Off 7. Bulgaria - Intelligent Music Project - Intention 8. Netherlands - S10 - De Diepte 9. Greece - Amanda Georgiadi Tenfjord - Die Together 10. Finland - The Rasmus - Jezebel
11. San Marino - Achille Lauro - Stripper 12. Portugal - Maro - Saudade Saudade 13. North Macedonia - Andrea - Circles 14. Italy - Mahmood & Blanco - Brividi 15. United Kingdom - Sam Ryder - Space Man 16. Albania - Ronela Hajati - Sekret 17. Serbia - Konstrakta - In Corpore Sano 18. Slovenia - LPS - Disko 19. Estonia - Stefan - Hope 20. Armenia - Rosa Linn - Snap 21. Belgium - Jérémie Makiese - Miss you 22. Lithuania - Monika Liu - Sentimentai 23. Malta - Emma Muscat - I Am What I Am 24. Austria - Lum!x feat. Pia Maria - Halo 25. Cyprus - Andromache - Ela 26. Norway - Subwoolfer - Give That Wolf A Banana 27. Moldova - Zdob si Zdub & Fratii Advahov - Trenuletul 28. Croatia - Mia Dimsic - Guilty Pleasure 29. Azerbaijan - Nadir Rustamli - Fade To Black 30. Denmark - Reddi - The Show 31. Israel - Michael Ben David - I.M 32. Latvia - Citi Zeni - Eat Your Salad 33. Ireland - Brooke - That's Rich 34. Germany - Malik Harris - Rockstars 35. Romania - WRS - Llámame 36. Georgia - Circus Mircus - Lock Me In 37. Switzerland - Marius Bear - Boys Do Cry 38. Spain - Chanel - SloMo 39. Iceland - Systur - Med Haekkandi Sól 40. Ukraine - Kalush Orchestra - Stefania
Montenegro and Australia? Well yes, these songs just make me feel. Both have already made me cry, what else can I say?
Sweden, gosh, I’m so proud of Cornelia! I’m so happy we’re sending her and I have absolutely no shame in putting my own country in my personal top 3. I love it.
What else for the top 10? France I believe has the potential to grown into my 1st spot. I find it very intriguing. And oh yeah, Bulgaria, I guess the main reason they’re so high for me is that I just love this style of music and it makes me very nostalgic. I get that most people wouldn’t feel the same but I do think many are way too harsh on them.
Now, y’all should be happy I didn’t post my list this morning because at that point Italy wasn’t even in my top 25, so this 14th place? It’s great. The song might grow on me more, I’m not sure. Right now I still don’t get the hype, I honestly find it pretty dull. Maybe it will change, maybe it won’t.
Spain is just incredibly boring to me, it doesn’t stick in my brain at all, I could not tell you what it sounds like right now. I forget it immediately after hearing it every time.
And Ukraine is sadly last only because of the rap parts that completely ruins the song for me. I love the rest of the song, especially the flute parts but I just can’t get over the rap. Yet. Maybe one day, hopefully one day. I want to like it.
The rest I don’t think is too out there? Serbia is probably the biggest climber for me currently. I was introduced to it with the music video and couldn’t stand it, then I watched the live performance instead and it completely changed my mind. Probably because there were no people eating in that version.
#Eurovision#random thoughts#I'm still not really here actually#but I do want to archive my eurovision thoughts somewhere#and IF anyway want to talk about it#I guess I could be around
