Eurovision 2006: Welcome to Athens!
Tumblr media
It's the one with the steps, and the fifth new host country in five years. Greece welcomes you to Athens and its ancient history. They hosted the Olympics only two-years prior to this, so ERT and the country as a whole have almost everything ready to go.
That includes the Olympic Indoor Hall which hosted the gymnastics, trampolining and basketball at the Olympics and is one of the biggest purpose built basketball stadiums in Europe, seating a maximum of over 17,000 spectators. For Eurovision that's been cut a little to 15,000, but that's that's still huge.
Tumblr media
Unlike Kyiv, there were no major problems in the run up. The Greek debt crisis was still three years in the future (even if, as ever, questions were asked about the funding of the event) and although there was an earthquake in the January of 2006 that shook the buildings in Athens, no damage was done to the venue.
There were some changes to the running order including one debutant. Armenia was welcomed to the Eurovision family for the first time. However three countries dropped out. Hungary left again, and more surprisingly Austria did as well, in protest at previous results claiming that musical talent was no longer the factor determining the scoreboard. There would be more complaints along those lines to come.
The other country missing this year is Serbia & Montenegro and this is one of those occasions where Eurovision and a country's history are intertwined. They were down to take part. The national final took place, but once again there was major controversy - not just booing, but bottle throwing and political schism between the national broadcasters. Within the space of weeks, a planned independence referendum took place in Montenegro and they decided to go alone. They had to pull out of Eurovision, but they did still get to vote.
Tumblr media
That means this year's total is thirty-seven countries participating with the same format of a semi-final and a final with the top ten finishing countries from last year pre-qualifying alongside the big four.
Voting was once again 100% televote with the same proviso as last year that backup juries would be used if a threshold for the total number of votes from a country was not met - or if there were technical problems with the vote.
There was one innovation in the scoreboard sequence as spokespersons now only had to read their eight, ten and twelve point winners, with the one to seven point winners presented automatically on the scoreboard as the spokesperson did their introduction. The aims was to cut the running time of the show, which was now getting close to three hours.
This year's hosts are Greek-American TV host Maria Menounos and Greece's 2004 Eurovision representative Sakis Rouvas.

Hi! I think I do this with everyone but I think is cool.
What songs from your home country do you think the guys from Joker Out and Blind Channel are?
okay this one is gonna be interesting and a bit hard. like, i know lots of greek songs but i don't really like greek music, especially the one of recent years. anyway i'll try my best with this one (can't promise explanations though)
starting with joker out
Bojan: idk how to explain this but he could definitely write a song like that so it suits him
Kris: radiates badass girl power and Kris rage (don't ask idk how to explain this). i can also totally picture him dancing to it
Nace: another choice i can't quite explain. let's say it's like he says a huge fuck off to whatever he didn't like about himself?
Jure: no comment, you probably know this one anyway
Jan: at first i chose this as a joke but the 2-3 greeks in the fandom will probably understand why this song is so Jan
moving on to blind channel
Niko: kinda edgy, kinda sweet just like him and whatever he writes from time to time
Olli and Aleksi: not counting this as a "them" song, but for some reason i can fit it individually to both of them. this is based on vibes idk what else to say
Joonas: it just... screams his name(?)
Joel: okay this one is a song in english but the band is greek so i guess it counts lol. anyway this is very Joel
Tommi: the chorus starts with the sentence "why don't you leave me alone?". i think this explains enough given the circus of a band he's in <3

Eurovision Song Contest 2004
12 & 15 May 2004 | Istanbul, Türkiye
Ten countries qualified from the Semi-Final: Serbia & Montenegro, Ukraine, Greece, Albania, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta, Croatia and FYR Macedonia. Greece sent one of its biggest stars to Istanbul, Sakis Rouvas, who gave an energetic performance of his song "Shake It". Similarly Serbia & Montenegro was represented by a singer who was big in the Balkans, Željko Joksimović. Minutes into the voting it became clear that the winner would come from one of three countries; Ukraine, Greece and Serbia & Montenegro.  Ukraine's Ruslana won the contest with "Wild Dances". She had been on an extensive promotional tour before the contest and became one of Ukraine's best known artists. [eurovision.tv]

I have a question for you
Greece has been struggling in recent years to recreate it's mid/late 00s success in Eurovision and we seemed to have achieved newfound success with the "European girl of greek heritage" recipe. But which was your favourite song out of the following, iconic Greek entries

music is the food of love so what are your favorite music videos of all time?
I love this question so much and I love you more for sending it to me
1. Blank Space - Taylor Swift
youtube
This was the first time I thought "oh, Taylor Swift is...really good?" and I have never looked back since. If you weren't there you simply wouldn't understand the grip this had on society in 2015 but there's a reason it has over a billion views, it truly was a cultural reset. The sarcasm? The outfits? The satirical playfulness as she portrays The Serial Dater Who Destroys Her Suitors? Everything about this is unhinged and iconic and no other TS music video will ever dethrone it.
2. New Rules - Dua Lipa
youtube
Dua Lipa had 50 dollars and a dream for this music video and the way she made it work is truly a work of art. No matter how much of a mega pop star she becomes, New Rules will always be a Moment in pop culture history and undoubtedly the song that skyrocketed her career.
3. Formation - Beyoncé
youtube
The world stopped turning when this dropped. The entire Lemonade visual album deserves praise of course, but Formation was the first thing we watched before we even knew Lemonade existed and it's still one of the best things I've watched. Nobody does it like Beyoncé, why even try to argue.
4. 7 Rings - Ariana Grande
youtube
We can say a lot about our girl Ariana, but we cannot deny her ability to release bop after bop after bop. While God Is A Woman is a stunning music video as well, 7 Rings is definitely my favorite because the song is superior as well I'm sorry I have to speak my truth.
5. Watermelon Sugar - Harry Styles
youtube
Oh to be frolicking on the beach wearing cute swimwear while Harry Styles sings about going down on you...The dream. Also this video came out during the first lockdown in 2020 and that made it extra special because we were all watching it stuck at home during the winter. And I love how sexual it is WITHOUT objectifying the women in it.
6. Primadonna - Marina and the Diamonds
youtube
If you didn't draw a black heart on your cheek and contemplated dying your hair platinum blonde with black roots when this came out, do not talk to me. You don't understand.
7. Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars
youtube
This song must have some kind of crack in it because the way I'm still unable to stay still whenever I listen to it has no other logical explanation. Bruno Mars always has great presence in all his music videos but this one is extra special for me.
8. Lady Marmelade
youtube
Throwing it all the way back to this absolute anthem and all the birthday parties I danced my heart out to this song having no idea what it was about. Also Christina Aguilera's hair and the purple corset was my Roman Empire for years. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this is pop music history right here.
9. Deja Vu - Olivia Rodrigo
youtube
Have to include my daughter here, of course. Out of all her music videos I love this one the best, it's so nostalgic and melancholic and I love the little dose of magical realism it has, I think it compliments the song so well.
10. Antexa - Sakis Rouvas
youtube
Nobody will understand this except @artsimpourtzi but this was a greek cultural reset and we haven't gotten over it yet. The director of this music video is Yorgos Lanthimos, before he became as famous as he is today and Sakis Rouvas was a sexual awakening for most millennials in our country. Ρουβιτσα φορ εβερ.
I'm probably forgetting a lot, especially from the 2000s where music videos were thriving but these ones popped up in my mind immediately after reading your question.
