you know what, no, i'm not done talking about this. jamie isn't 'dealing with the fact hes not number one anymore/hes not the star'. he literally already dealt with that in SEASON TWO!!!! sure he was still his arrogant prick self but it was in a fun, teasing way meant to make the team and the audience laugh, that was the whole point of The Signal, so Jamie would know he could turn up being a prick!! because he already KNEW he wasn't the star on the team, Roy's whole problem with Jamie when he became a coach was that JAMIE WAS TOO MUCH OF A TEAM PLAYER.
i swear i'm so sick of seeing people act like jamie is just throwing a fit over nothing, he's not worried from a selfish concern (although he has every right to be pissed about Zava stealing his goal, i saw someone else say that Roy would have headbutted the FUCK out of someone for that and they're right and they should say it), but the point is that jamie's biggest concern is that the team, HIS team, the goofy touchy feely himbo team that's anti-toxic masculinity THAT TEAM is regressing. they're not listening to Ted or Beard or Roy, they're just getting on the field and giving Zava the ball and that's not what team sports are about. especially not with a self-centered borderline narcissist like Zava.
also jamie's looking at this from the other side now. he used to be a bully/asshole star player. he was sent back to man city, did some soul searching and growing as a person and as a player and PROVED himself to have changed for the better. he didn't just apologize and go back to acting like a dick, no, he woke up and realized it wasn't ok for him to act like that. so now he's fucking BAFFLED why it's ok for Zava to act like this. Zava isn't an aggressive bully the way Jamie was, but Zava's tell is in his body language. he shakes off Dani and the teams congratulations, stepping infront of and above all of the rest of the team to take all of the crowds cheering for himself and to block the view of the team, he steps in front of ted to block the teams view of their fucking coach, because to Zava, *he* is the only thing that matters. to zava, he is nothing short of the sun and/or god, and jamie is the only one wearing sunglasses and not being blinded by it, and is the only one looking around like 'wtf why is everyone drinking this dickheads kool-aid please get a grip'

Something bothering me after s3.e4. Zava's right, a lot. The first thing the guy says is that gender is a social construct! Hell yeah!
We all expected to hate him, expected him to be a Jaimie s1, and then he barges in to the scene saying all this stuff that we agree with. This episode where he talks about how we should name ourselves feels a bit "yes, king."
Except that it's not.
Zava does not ask Van Damme why he's Zoreaux because he wants Van Damme to look deeper, he does it because he was corrected by Van Damme on his name. Zava was wrong, and rather than admit that and move on Zava constructed a narrative in which he was right by using ideology that we already agree with.
It's a distraction technique. It's a massively toxic trait that is most often used by narcissists. It becomes impossible to argue with someone doing this, because you agree fundamentally with what they're saying, and the moment that you do you've fallen into a trap where the narcissist does not have to change their behavior or recognize their wrongs.
This particular situation is a small one, but it hints at something much bigger. The fact that Zava couldn't admit he was wrong over a more minor thing is a big red flag to me. Zava said what he said to protect his hero/idol status, and because he is the kind of man that cannot admit to his mistakes.
This also isn't the first time. His introduction is him sitting at Rebecca's desk. Which is clearly very creepy, but when he's called to answer to why he's there he distracts us by saying "gender is a construct." When he first speaks to Ted he simultaneously says the things all coaches want to hear and what he really means. "I am an empty vessel filled with gold. I am a rock, mold me." He's claiming he'll listen to Ted, but also very clearly saying that he will do what he wants in the end. He simultaneously says Will is the most important person and insults him by saying he's 11. We're used to himbo characters and seeing the best in people, but that just makes it all the easier to be taken in.
The writers are clearly using Zava to illustrate a new type of toxic male character we haven't yet seen on the show as of yet. And they're simultaneously demonstrating just how convincing narcissists are. They're so easy to like because they say the right things. Many of the fans of the show like Zava, and that's on purpose.
And the writers have also already told us exactly what Zava's going to do.
When Zava is first mentioned, Rebecca and Higgins talk about how he switches teams constantly. Now that we know Zava's character it's easy to connect the dots as to why that is. The moment people on the team wise up to who Zava actually is and stop hero worshiping him is the moment Zava skips town. He doesn't care what kind of situation that leaves his team in, because he's only ever been on a team of 1.
So what we'll see is that Zava will continue to use progressive words to prove himself right while being steadily more wrong and offensive. At some point that will cross a line where the team can no longer ignore it, and it will break the illusion of what Zava's been doing the whole time for both the team and the audience. Zava will immediately leave Richmond. And bc this is a tv show it will be at a moment where Richmond needs him the most.

Beard: All right, guys! Let's take a vote!
Ted: A secret vote. Everyone close your eyes.
*the team closes their eyes*
Sam: We can't see the result!
Ted: Well, just say your vote out loud.
Jamie: Won't we recognize each other's voices?
Zava: Colin has a point

In the episode Mom City, Roy knows something is up when Jamie says “I think it’s more important to be safe than to look cool.”
And we get that moment of “oh shit” as a contrast to how Thierry’s mask is supposed to be funny.
And Jamie’s breakdown is very distracting. Over the top.
But that means we (or at least I) forgot that sentence in between. The importance of Jamie ruminating on safety ahead of being back in Manchester.
Season One Jamie had appearances to keep, and armor to put on, and would undoubtedly have answered closer to Richard here.
But this Jamie doesn’t hide things. He went straight to Keeley when he realized how the hack happened. He didn’t pretend that Zava didn’t bother him. He is open and truthful and still almost everyone missed that he was falling apart.
Because he had been enjoying his longest run of No James in his entire adult life and was about to risk ending that streak.
So when people talk like Jamie isn’t scared of his dad, or that he wasn’t really that abusive, or whatever minimizing shit they think. TL literally told us and showed us his fear.

thinkin about how zava steps in front of ted the first time he meets the team in the locker room. thinkin about how he keeps doing it even when ted tries to move out from under his shadow. thinkin about how that's probably a metaphor for how the team is going to look to zava more than their head coach (with the exception of jamie)

nothing just.....zava immediately saying "why" when zoreaux corrected him and then saying "you can be whoever you want to be" to have some semblance of profundity but under that it's just him not seeing that zoreaux was correcting him because he Wants to be zoreaux, not zorro, that "coach, i'm me, why would i want to be anything else?"...yknow just nothing

No more theories about Zava being homophobic please- one of the first things he says in the show is that gender is a construct.
He’s an asshole, not a homophobe. Get it right

Some thoughts about the team dynamic before Jamie's locker room moment that I found interesting:
I'm no expert on football tactics by any means, but even I can understand that while Zava was at Richmond, their play was consistently just "get the ball to Zava, he'll take care of it." And although it's pretty easy to tell that the team's lost without him because they're used to relying on him, I also found it interesting that they immediately moved to relying on someone else, instead: Jamie. And the idea of a strategy where Jamie's job isn't to be their sole goal scorer clearly didn't get through to them at first.
In E7, while the team is walking down the tunnel after the first half, Sam's pretty clearly saying something to Jamie, and while I can't tell what he's saying, his gestures make it seem like he's trying to tell Jamie to push forward, or something.
Then in the locker room, Colin says, "Jamie, you keep floating back, mate. You gotta stay up front."
Followed by Bumbercatch: "We need you to stretch the defense."
And Isaac saying, "We need you to score a fucking goal!"
Their mindset right now is "get the ball to the star player", who is, in the absence of Zava, Jamie. This adds so many layers to Jamie's guiding the team in the right direction because it also pretty directly parallels season one. Before Ted, while George Cartrick was still the manager, it's pretty clear the go-to tactic was "get the ball to Jamie." Obviously, back in season one, Jamie didn't fight this because he was fine with getting most of the glory. Meanwhile, the rest of the team probably wasn't too fond of it.
I love that in season three, the team's dropped back to the same situation, but this time, Jamie's the one who protests, Jamie's the one who fixes it, and Jamie's the one who unites them as a team again.

also i haven’t seen anyone make this comparison yet but the conversation right at the beginning about how colin is a chameleon and “can change depending on the situation” heavily contrasts the later conversation ted, rebecca, and keeley have about how geniuses don’t need to shift for the world, the world needs to shift for them, while talking about both zava and method actors and how despite them talking about this as if its a good thing, people are now starting to realize just how toxic method actors are (and how this correlates to how toxic zava really is) i hope this comes full circle in a way that recognizes colin’s adaptability as a good thing and zava’s attitude as toxic rather than genius.

things i desperately want from Ted Lasso s3:
ted stays in Richmond (i know, i know, his son and i get that, but i just HATE it when the found family is split up at the end of the story, this is fiction please let me live with the fantasy idea of all of them living in close proximity until the end of time)
roy and keeley back together (for good) because come ON they are in LOVE and they belong together, let them do their growing on their own, sure, but PLEASE let my parents get back together by the end!!
zava OUT. i'm so sick of this dude, i would like for my himbos to stop worshipping him like a god, please and thank you. zava is selfish and the longer he's here the more likely it is he'll break Dani's heart and i'm not about that.
colin and michael to stay together, PLEASE. idk much about their relationship, no one does at this point to be fair, but i like the vibes i'm seeing so far!!!
within that realm, please don't have a 'you need to come out for me or i will dump you' plot line, that's so gross and i hate it every time it happens. obvs trent won't out colin, but writers LOVE the outing ultimatum from the romantic partner, even if i LOATHE it
BEARD AND JANE BREAK UP 2K23!!!!! BEARD GET A RESTRAINING ORDER PLEASE
more Nora and Phoebe. and Sam's family and Roy's sister and any other family tidbits, ESPECIALLY the Higginses
jamie and ted father son bonding time please!!!! ESPECIALLY with jamie finally being told ted wasn't the one who sent him away
isaac not being traded??? like dude please don't get rid of my haircutting, shoe fanatic boyfriend i love him
and finally-
PEOPLE TO APOLOGIZE FOR CALLING JAMIE'S VERY WELL DESERVED SIDEYE BEHAVIOR AT ZAVA 'acting like a little bitch' LIKE DUDE. Jamie's been so supportive of the team and in the group shots he celebrates their goals and wins (even with Zava showboating and stuff), but it's JAMIE who notices Zava stealing all the credit, Zava effectively shutting out the other players from the crowds so all the crowds see are ZAVA, and, hello, acting like a CULT LEADER with the team!!! Jamie isn't being a 'little bitch' he's grossed out by this very weird, fanatical meglomaniac who's taken up residence on the team that, before this, never would have tolerated this kind of behavior. for gods sakes he still thinks they GOT RID OF JAMIE for doing similar shit, which even if it isn't true, no ones even HINTED to him that it's not true, not even Ted.
