Kinda fucked up. What did Settembrini deal with during his childhood? I'm avoiding mentioning spoilers here, but during those torturous events he endured, what happened...
He has definitely built borders to seperate himself from physical forms of intimacy (I'm excluding communication through words from 'physical' here, but not laughter)... I think it's to keep his mind as logical as possible. The last thing he wants is to get too close to someone and find his opinions becoming hypocritical. Although the lack of logic that comes with close relationships in general is something he would want to avoid.
How am I supposed to make him kiss Naphta if he won't even laugh around him?? The best I've done in my fanfic about them is them arguing under candlelight. Genuinely. They also slept in a bed together but Settembrini was basically falling off of it the whole time.

___
And so Hans Castorp’s heart was filled with contentment at the thought that before him lay two empty, safely serene hours: the main rest cure, sacred to the rules of the house. Although he was only a visiting guest up here, he, too, found it to be a very suitable arrangement. For he was a patient man by nature, who could spend long hours doing nothing in particular and loved, as we recall, his leisure time, with no numbing activity to demolish, banish, or overwhelm it.

But for new, it is enough for us to remind everyone how quickly a number of days, indeed a great number, can pass when one spends them as a patient in bed. It is always the same day – it just keeps repeating itself. Although since it is always the same day, it is surely not correct to speak of “repetition”. One should speak of monotony, of an abiding now, of eternalness. Someone brings you your midday soup, the same soup they brought you yesterday and will bring again tomorrow. And in that moment it comes over you – you don’t know why or how, but you feel dizzy watching them bring in the soup. The tenses of verbs become confused, they blend and what is now revealed to you as the true tense of all existence is the “inelastic present,” the tense in which they bring you soup for all eternity. But one can’t speak of boredom, because boredom comes with the passing of time – and that would be a paradox in relation to eternity.

Tfw you get past a moment of rough reading. Tfw you can finally untense yourself now that you're sure you don't secretly hate the book, you just didn't like the last chapter or two of it. Tfw you're now certain you would do well to marry your book and perhaps have a few children (terribly un-canon fanfictions)
