Zangbeto is a traditional voodoo practice from Fon and Yoruba people of Benin.
It is often described as a 'night watchman' or 'guardian' due to its role in protecting communities from evil spirits. Zangbeto is also performed at various cultural ceremonies and celebrations.
The practice uses elaborate costumes and masks, which are believed to house powerful spirits. During performances, Zangbeto dancers whirl and spin, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of color and sound. The dancers' movements are said to mimic the movements of the wind, and the costumes are designed to evoke the power and mystery of the spirit world.

Dire Facts #12:
The zangbeto is an angry spirit unable to make the journey to the afterlife, so it takes possession of hair. However, scholars believe that this creature is not a natural spirit, and instead a necromantic creation.

Zangbeto “Zangbeto are the traditional voodoo guardians of the night among the Ogu (or Egun) people of Benin, Togo and Nigeria. A traditional police and security institution, the Zangbeto cult is charged with the maintenance of law and order, and ensures safety and security within Ogu communities. They are highly revered and act as an unofficial police force patrolling the streets, especially in the night, watching over people and their properties, and tracking down criminals and presenting them to the community to punish. Originally created to scare the enemy away, Zangbeto will wander the streets to detect thieves and witches, and to protect law and order.” — Wikipedia

Sexypink - Caribbean Artists’ works speak to us as Caribbean people. We do not need to explain this kind of textile sculptural costume because it is inside us. Tau Lewis is playing with a kaleidoscope of textures, shapes and cacophony of s o u n d s that rattle the senses exquisitely.

Sexypink - The beauty of finding an Artist’s work sometimes is the communication that you feel is going on between yourself and that person’s creations.
It is a bonding, a sort of intimacy being formed because it is speaking to and with you. Tau Lewis’s sculptural forms are doing this for me.
Tumblr media
Sexypink - Tau Lewis calls her work an ‘ upcycling of a circumstance.’ Hers are celestial bodies come to life amidst bits and pieces of flotsam and jetsam.

Sexypink - Tau Lewis’s towering forms - l call it, look ah boo boo man Dey!
Tumblr media
Sexypink - In a world where we have seen it all, it is wonder to feel a bit uncentered by Tau Lewis’s daunting forms that like the West African Zangbeto, you expect them to come alive and consume you whole.

Documentation and archive-building
How do I want to archive and gather my inspiration and ideas? I know for a fact that the tactile experience satisfies me, so some sort of scrapbook or corkboard would give me a push to connect the dots.
I need a way to journal that feels sustainable.
I need to print photos and references to put on the board. Let's see if that board on Blocket is still up.
I need a way to separate projects for my head to stay organised. Clearing up space. I like tumblr but it feels messy sometimes.
I have a couple ideas I want to put into work, and so, I think school would be the best place to find solace and space to work on the ideas. Ideas for my BA.
On the verge here, let me think.
Oh! - No distractions please... Zangbeto, small publication, GUSTO, Hevioxxo's Revenge, ceramics, sticks and wood house, hand house, the carriage from Portugal
