1998 San Francisco Playlist (YouTube)

Really ain't nothin' like the city of San Francisco when it comes to the music. The hippie-psychedelic Haight-Ashbury vibes of the 60s ended up getting baked into the cyber-psychonautic underground rave scene of the 90s; there's been a whole bunch of house music; a rich folk tradition; Bay Area hip hop developed into its own oft-overlooked entity; a pretty deep pocket of turntablism; and, of course, plenty of indie rock too. Quite a mix of scenes, and I'm obviously missing a bunch too!

So this week I'm giving you all something that feels like a long-forgotten CD that some college kid who was attending school in San Francisco may have burnt back in 1998. It's an eclectic, completely underground mix of electronic, hip hop, and a little bit of indie too; and it's been collecting dust at the bottom of a drawer now for over 25 years!

We kick off with a dubby deep house remix of Paris' A Reminiscent Drive's "Two Sides to Every Story" by SF native Charles Webster—14.4K plays on YouTube across a handful of uploads—and then we follow that up with a mix of UK group Globo's "Breakdown" by legendary breakbeat/trip hop pioneer Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto, who started calling the Golden Gate City his home in 1993—under 500 plays on that one as of right now. A little after that we get more breakbeat from a *very* obscure duo called Astralabe, whose cinematic, tribal-psychedelic masterpiece, "Guimbri Dub (Self-Cremating Fire of Passion Remix)," appears to be the only song that they ever released, and is included exclusively on an uncredited DJ mix called The Vertical Iris; currently sitting at a measly 92 plays.

Then on the hip hop side of things, we have some lo-fi dustiness from Double Life and Raw B called "Cycles of the Mind," as well as a 7-plus-minute medley by Sacred Hoop, DJ Marz, and Z-Man called "Not Our House," which I think can only be best described as Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack vibe. Those songs have 28.8K and 6.6K plays, respectively. And then for some killer turntablism, we've got a few tunes, including something from DJ Badrok called "1-800-Coming Correct," which has a little under 400 plays.

There's also a fat, buzzy bassline drum n bass remix by a guy named DJ Abstract of "Dukes Up," the original version of which is by someone who simply went by the name of W, that has a little over 6.5K plays (sorry about the super annoying part at the end of it 😕); and a couple tunes that show the versatility of a dude named Cole Marquis, whose solo indie folk tune, "48's," only has a little over 140 plays, and his much peppier, college/indie rock, keyboard-aided bop, "Dirt Bike Rider," by his band The Snowmen, has a little over 170 plays.

Roots Of The Modern Rap

With hits like "In da Club", "21 Questions" and "P.I.M.P.", 50 Cent quickly became a household name with his trademark bravado and no-nonsense attitude. He drew listeners into his world, offering a glimpse into the harsh realities of street life through his raw lyricism and compelling storytelling.

In addition to music, 50 Cent has expanded his empire into a variety of business ventures, including film production, acting and entrepreneurship. His status as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history is inarguable, and his impact on both the rap industry and popular culture as a whole is undeniable.

for me i do agree they're the gayest they've ever been in this current era, explicitly speaking. but franquin really hammered home that "lifelong partners" old-married couple trope for them and tome janry really tried to sprinkle in some bisexual stuff and make them heart-wrenchingly faggy. morvan & munuera's s&f has that newlyweds / young gays vibes even if many people hated their run for THAT album lol. and i'd say fournier and nic cauvin did have that they-are-together-but-we-wont-say-what-kind thing s&f generally have. so that leaves us with yoann & vehlmann. im not saying there isnt anything gay or crazy insane "the only explanation for the typa shit theyre pulling is love" moments in their era (there are A LOT!) but the characters feel pretty surface-level, they dont even spend that much time together, and they keep putting random heterosexual hearts flying everywhere every time one of them talk to the different sex LMFAO which is funny to think about since their debut spirou comic, their spirou de, was my favorite. and entire album was about the yin yang puzzle piece dynamic of the two. but one can always find gay in the most dudebros of way so! every era has its own gay-as-fuck flavor if ya dig deep enough. and ya had lost yer mind. and ya have love in yer heart <3

why I like them: honestly she's just so fucking iconic, but I love how she's amazing and badass while not being one-dimensional! like she has flaws and she has trauma and insecurities and none of that takes away from her positive traits!!

why I don't: idk I feel like she has some ideas that I would disagree with - I haven't re-read the books in a while but I always got the vibe that she's pretty pro-military and particularly in favour of the second army. and like I get it! fun light-hearted fantasy books are not obligated to deconstruct entire social systems! but if I met her irl I think we'd argue about it lmao

favourite episode/scene: I love the scene in s2 where she agrees to ally with alina! I think it's really sweet and shows her character development

favourite season/movie: in terms of the books, I think she's best in the kos duology - as fun and iconic as she is in the s&b trilogy I think the backstory and development she gets in the later books really enhances her character

I love the theme of fate/destiny vs free will in the grishaverse and this is honestly one of my all-time favourite quotes - I'm actually considering having part of it as my yearbook quote!

favourite outfit: ooooh I love her outfit for the shu han heist in s2 (although obviously, honourable mention to the blue ribbon™ just for being iconic)

otp: see my answer is different for fanon and canon. in canon I adore zoyalina, in fanfic I love zoyalai!

brotp: zoya and genya are literally the BEST friendship duo ever (although I also low-key ship them romantically). zoya and nina are not necessarily a good friendship but I love analysing their dynamic so they get an honourable mention anyway. oh and her cousin lada, the girl liliyana adopts - we barely see them interact but I think they would have had such a cute dynamic!!

headcanon: she's a cat person. this is actually true and accurate bc I say so. she 100% owns cats post-canon

unpopular opinion: she shouldn't have become queen at the end of row. as iconic as it is, I can't help but think that it would backfire politically, it'd have negative consequences for her relationship with nikolai, and it kind of sets back both characters' development. this feels too harsh but idk 😭😭 might write a longer post about it at some point

Happy anniversary to Heavenly Sword, released on this day in 2007! Heavenly Sword was my first PS3 game and made a huge impression on me when I first got that clunky, enormous console that I can't believe is still running today. I am so thankful to have found a Nariko close-ish to me to take photos with in my Kai cosplay & with my crossbow prop that I made in 2020! Kai & Nariko was one of my biggest cosplay duo dreams ever and it was so much fun shooting with KnotPossible, her husband, and of course Z is Eternal, this past May. A) Deadpool

B) X-men Including X-men Days of Future Past and all the trilogies which X-men was the fav as we saw the rise of Professor X and Magnetto whom were a pretty damn good duo. They never got Gambit right until thank god for Deadpool once again saving the day.

However the clash of Deadpool origins as one describes his creation from a lab project gone wrong hence the first fight of Wolverine Origin and Deadpool in X-men Origina and the more current version of his timeline in which actually FRANCIS would not of been the object of hate much like wolverines hate for the Trucker in his original Wolverine Origins. Deadpool would have then been even more a foe of Wolverine but Wolverine maid it difficult for that Deadpool to even be a side note

Logan was maybe one of my stand alone Wolverine movie best thou and they were good to use that in the current Deadpool saga.

H) Spider-Man all of them Toby Andrew and Tom all rocked the shit out of that Spidey role I think they all great.

I) and they should have their own category Into the Spiderverse Across the Spiderverse and we know the end of this Saga is upon us in the near future

K) As well as Wakanda forever and the Black Panther saga

L) Man of Steel Batman vs Superman and Justice League I thought Man of Steel was the best but the other two didn’t make my cut for all time in my mind.

M) Dr Strange and all of his Multiverses of Madness

N) Venom one was awesome 2 I didn’t see yet but the upcoming Venom movie in the fall looks pretty good.

O) Antman was extremely great and

P) Hulk and only the Incredible Hulk not Eric Bana and Ed Norton was my preferred hulk but Ruffalo was a nice addition but he sort of was a stretch for me to be as good as Norton’s portrayal I was upset with the Hulk John Woo version and if you were around the hype was as bad as when we saw Godzilla in 1999 well actually a re vised Godzilla that was a far looking different Godzilla than the Godzilla we always saw growing up.

R) Wonder Woman and 84 and we know she appears in Justice League as well as Batman vs Superman

S) Shazam not a big fan here but I got give respect that his series is better than anything in this next choice

T) Fantastic Four it’s a shame and hopefully they get it right with the next adaptation of Dr Doom who besides Thanos was really a bad dude in which took all Four and. Silver Surfer to take down.

Now the last few here technically didn’t make the Saga criteria but along with Logan even though it was an end but not for ever end .were decent hopefully to something that could have been even better if they did the adaptation better down the road. The Punisher series is a series I will have to revisit as well as the Flash but the Flash just could never get that mass fan fare as much as any other DC character I still think Superman or Batman is an always better draw for audiences which is a shame but it is the reality. And maybe it could have caught up to Spider-Man success but it really never launched as much as the future for DC moving forward.

What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*

It's not that I don't "get" specific ships, it's more closer to "I have a hard time suspending my disbelief and going along with the bit".

There are two ships that come to mind: Toyosatomimi no Miko/Soga no Tojiko from Touhou Project and Klavier Gavin/Apollo Justice from Ace Attorney.

For Miko/Tojiko, I can completely understand the appeal of a married couple meeting again in another life (not quite on the level of reincarnation, but it does have the theme of reuniting after a long period of time). But I feel like my hang-ups is that fandom tends to portray the duo as happily married when I'm 90% sure its real life inspiration (Shoutoku Taishi and Tojiko no Iratsume's marriage) was arranged so Soga no Umako could have access to the Royal Family rather than any real love. (I have no objections to being corrected since I only know like extremely broad strokes on Asuka period politics).

Even without drawing inspiration from history, Tojiko's profiles come off as pretty distant around Miko, usually only a line or two and then the bulk of her profiles are either about herself or about her relationship with Futo. I think typically the fandom writes it off as her wanting to be private, but from my perspective it comes off as her just trying to bide her tongue because she doesn't want to talk shit about her boss (but is okay talking about a dipshit co-worker). There is a line from Tojiko's profile in Symposium of Post-Mystcism I still can't really made heads or tails over though:

Futo's idea was "We'll let Buddhism rule for now, but after Miko revives as an authority figure, we will both revive as her officers."

It's not so much the wording but what throws me off, but instead it's that I'm not 100% sure if Akyuu is quoting Tojiko here or not, it feels like it should be. If it is Tojiko, herself, saying this you could read that she's close enough to Miko to be on a first name basis, but I can't help but read it as "she holds little respect for Miko so she just opts to call her by her name instead of her title". The other thing I get hung up over is how Tojiko's profile in Strange Creators of Outer World doesn't confirm her residency in Senkai (along with Seiga and Yoshika), which, again, comes off as her wanting to be distant around Miko. If memory serves Tojiko briefly pokes her head in Futo's ending in Hopeless Masquarade and no where else, kind of adding to my personal read she's not really that close to Miko.

This isn't to say I don't think they can learn to get along, but it feels like there's a lot of buildup needed for me to buy into the idea.

In a similar way with Klavier/Apollo, I get the concept on paper (like aside from the casual banter/innuendo that gets flung around in court). Klavier is a very lonely person and hides it with his persona, and Apollo hates that because he's such an honest and forward. I think he even mentions it in Turnabout Seranade he prefers the personality Klavier shows when he works on a case over his rock star personality.

In theory there's enough tension where I can see it being very satisfying when, finally, Apollo understands why Klavier puts the front that he does and in return Klavier can be open and honest to Apollo. But I never felt like such a moment really came. Maybe there's fan works that play with this concept, but I never was interested enough to explore.

3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?

No, oddly enough. I think on tumblr I would just block the post and on twitter mute/block are the bread and butter of the Twitter Experience(TM). I feel like it takes a lot for me to actually unfollow someone, but I do draw the line when people get really aggressive about it. The obvious example are those tweets where someone will post along the lines of "block me if you like x, y, and z"

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?*

Usually my OTP preferences stay consistent throughout the years, but they sometimes lose intensity compared to when I first like them. As of late I don't hate Phoenix Wright/Miles Edgeworth (narumitsu) but I tend to prefer searching up Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright (mitsunaru) if I really want to be nit picky about ship order... It's mostly because I think it's more entertaining to watch Miles fluster Phoenix more than the other way around.

If Y/n and Mario were in One Punch Man Book Cover

This is a Book Cover of how Y/n aka SMG5, Mario and Luigi end up in the world of One Punch Man along with the Caped Baldy himself, Saitama aka One Punch Man.

How this happened is when Y/n and Mario were just hanging out until they encountered a couple of monsters that beaten them both up in a near death experience as they both tried to fight back, but they were too weak to defeat them.

However, just as they are about to die at the hands of the monsters, they were both saved by a caped baldy that take out the two monsters with just one punch.

That caused the comedic duo to train themselves to the bone by doing 100 push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and do a 10 kilometer run every single day as they both attempted to do Saitama's intense training regimen to become just as strong as him.

Eventually, the two of them managed to achieve the power they've been seeking and had become just as strong as Saitama as they both started saving people from whatever kind of threat that lurk around Creation City.

Then one day when they saved Luigi from a monster that tried to steal his stuff, Y/n and Mario saved him with their newfound strength and Luigi begged them to teach him on how to be strong like them, which took some convincing to teach him on how to be strong like them and eventually Luigi got the same treatment and became strong like them and calls himself, One Jump Man.

Then suddenly, the three of them got sucked into an inter-dimensional portal created by the Number One hero known as Blast and found themselves in the world of One Punch Man.

So then, the three of them decided to live in a separate apartment in City Z, which is right next to Saitama's Apartment and eventually the caped baldy became fast friends with the trio and worked together to fight monsters to protect the people around them and make it to the nearest sales at the supermarket.

Soon after they defeated some monsters at a place called House of Evolution and joined an organization known as the Hero Association, where they work for them to save the innocent from the wicked and perform some heroic duties to rise up to the big leagues to become S Class Heroes.

Eventually, the three of them including Saitama started taking on bigger threats like dealing with Boros the Dominator of the Universe, the Monster Association, and the Hero Hunter, Garou.

Not to mention that after gaining some popularity as heroes that somehow got the attention of other heroes like Hellish Blizzard and her group called the Blizzard Bunch that tried to get Y/n, Mario, Luigi and Saitama to join her group (reminding of a certain someone from Inkopolis that had the same motive to make Y/n and Mario join a gang because of their creative skills) or when Flashy Flash tried to asking Y/n, Mario and Saitama to look for a certain monster and become his disciple, which also resulted in slamming the door in his face and not remembering his name or when they soon found OPM versions of the Nintendo characters including a DBZ version of Shaggy that became fast friends with the gang after a fighting tournament along with dealing with a more Dangerous version of Waluigi.

A slow day at Luna's Moonlight Delights.

Often the case after the dinner rush, leaving Chris there to watch tv and maybe put on some music. Thankfully, he had the company of Zora these days. Making the last two hours feel like 30 minutes with new ways to pass the time.

Conversations on art, playing a board game, or just listening to music. It was always a new way to kill time whenever Zora was around.

Their eyes were glued to the tv in the corner, laughing at the various music videos that played. Some from the 80's, others from the 90's. Once they got to the 2000's videos, their feet began moving. Some krunk classics, a few iconic kumbia tracks, and a the ever so iconic dance tracks.

A certain song that held an infectious hook of being a jerk combined with simple yet ankle-breaking footwork had the duo showing off old moves.

"Hold up," Chris began, stepping into the empty space. "Me and Jess used to be experts at this."

His feet slowly imitates the young MC's moves in the video with some ease.

"I don't know Z, me and you might have to bring it back. Might have to sign up for competitions like them old movies!"

When looking at how ruthless the music industry can get, something that is often forgotten is the value of real, genuine friendship free of expectations of reciprocity. People pretend to like people they don’t, because they know that knowing the right people at the right time could save their careers if push ever came to shove. Because of circumstances like this, music-lovers of all kinds found themselves at least a little bit baffled when brooding alternative artist SAINT and UNDEAD’s very own Sebby Jones announced their US-wide „Holy Hell“-Tour. While fans of either artist were thrilled enough to sell out every venue within a few hours, people were still left wondering: How would Sebby Jones’ new age pop-punk mesh with SAINT’s ethereal laments? Is there a place for shows where Jones’ cheerful proclamation of nymphomania can be the pathway for SAINT mourning their perceived loss of innocence? I decided to investigate, making my way to the duo’s Chicago show on February 7th and can say: I came for business, but I stayed for pleasure. 

If you’re over the age of 35 and/or don’t have children, I don’t blame you if you don’t know who either of these artists are, although they’ve both built up an impressive body of work over the last year or two: 

SAINT is the chosen name of Saint Harper-Yamaguchi, a nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter from Walnut Park, known for their devastating path through life (seriously, it’s a crazy rabbit hole), culminating in an eventual adult adoption by Hollywod leading man Austin Harper (31) last year. The young artist managed to cement their way in the contemporary music industry with the release of their sophomore album „Perish“, which received universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike and allowed Harper-Yamaguchi to be awarded the Top Artist award at the 2022 Legends Awards, beating out industry titans like Madam Vivi and Elsa Bergström. 

The other headliner, Sebby Jones has been actively releasing music a little longer than his counterpart - the twenty-two-year-old London-native is a member of controversial Gen-Z rock band „Undead“, mostly known by mainstream audiences for their controversial lyricism and cutthroat fanbase. Unlike the notoriously reclusive SAINT, a lot of Jones’ fans love him for his extroversion and boisterous personality: He first made headlines for his shotgun wedding to fellow scandal-prone teenie-rocker FOXIE, followed by the release of his solo-album „The Freak Show“ in April of last year, catapulting him into the level of  celebrity required to be cast on the 2022-season of Dollhouse, where Jones yet again became a central character after pushing „Londylicious“-singer Londyn Pierce (26) off a balcony during a verbal altercation. After this, Jones went on to win the Top New Artist award to mirror Harper-Yamaguchi’s win from that same night.

The two unlikely collaborators met „around 5 or 6“ years ago while homeless, couchsurfing together and „building a bond that most people probably wouldn’t understand“, says SAINT. The night of last year’s Legends Awards incited the feeling of finally feeling like the two had won something after being handed nothing but losses in life, causing them to make the decision that if people liked to see them separately, their bond would only improve their individual talents.

The show lasted for about two hours and was jam-packed with music, crowd-interaction, fanservice and some genuinely touching moments - I don’t want to give everything away, of course, but here’s 5 of my favorite moments of the night: 

#1 The „Golden Age“ Performance

With the crowd still on a high from Jones’ performance of „Parents“,SAINT stepped onto a completely dark stage before only the floor was illuminated in a warm white light. „And I don’t wanna talk about love anymore / Cause it’s getting too much for me“, they introduced their newest single „Golden Age“ - a very personal hymn of reflection and emptiness, wrapped in a translucent bow of eerie sentimentality: „I’m so beautiful and it’s wasted on me / Because the taste reminds me, I hate what love’s turned out to be.“ The young artist’s wistful performance though, was what really drove the point home. In light of her recent breakup with Undead frontman Axel Parrish (21), Harper-Yamaguchi’s mournfulness feels real and tangible. In its core, the performance was a raw declaration of uncertainty, a very common feeling within the artist’s generation, showcased through SAINT’s lens - deeply evocative and bleak, yet laced with a deep determination to set out and overcome.

#2 The “Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today” Performance

“To be honest with all of you, I feel shit sometimes. Life can be fucking shit, ya know? Bad days, bad months, bad years. And sometimes I feel proper sad,” Jones’ stated almost solemnly, his English accent as thick as ever as he stood centre stage. All eyes were fixated on him as the microphone was secured to the stand, an impressive swig of a beer housed in a plastic cup was taken, and then the guitar resting across his back was swung to his front as a cheeky smile appeared on his face. “But ya know what? I don’t feel like feeling sad today.” The plastic cup was launched above the crowd. As beer rained upon us, Jones wielded the guitar and the beginning chords of the unreleased song caused a wail of screams from the crowd. “But I think I’m too late and I’m sinking now / And I need somebody to pull me out.” The energy displayed within the performance by Jones was addictive, eager and it pulled us all in. As the chorus hit and the Englishman paraded from either side of the stage with the guitar, the crowd came to life even more as the warm light bled into a multicoloured array of positivity over us. “While all the people are cruel, you’re an hour away / Don’t feel like feeling sad today.” Over all, the performance exuded positivity, an absolute eagerness for happiness to rule and for all signs of negativity to fade into the dark. The way he displayed himself on that stage, I could feel the intensity from him as well as subtle undertones of desperation. The want and need for everything to be okay with the world, and perhaps within himself too.

#3 Duet Debut

Avid fans and Twitter users already found out about the fact that one of the promised „surprises“ for tour was the debut of an as-of-now untitled track that Jones and Harper-Yamaguchi perform together. Heavy guitar riffs typical for Jones’ signature style meshed together with a dreamy, glossy production finish that’s commonly seen in SAINT’s most hard-hitting tracks provide the framework for the long-awaited official collaboration between the two artists and give fans what they were asking for. The lyrics tell a story of starcrossed love, giving fans sufficient reason to go crazy with their theories: „Wide awake all night thinking about you / Do you think of me too?“ SAINT belts, sometimes overpowered by the strong instrumental, but it comes off as purposeful, as if her insecurity is being drowned out by the noise of everyday life. „I keep on losing track of time / Cause what’s the point if you’re not by my side?“ Jones questions, and I’m sure after seeing this powerful display of compatibility, fans wonder the same thing.

#4 The Rainbow Flag Moment

Something a lot of people who don’t necessarily listen to SAINT’s music can attribute to them is a series of tweets they made around the time the Legends Awards nominations were announced. They expressed frustration about the gendered categories that barred them as a gender-nonconforming artist from being nominated in some categories, which heated the discussion of inclusion of nonbinary performers in an increasingly diverse industry and cemented the 19-year-old as an important figure in the LGBTQ+ community. On the other hand, Sebby Jones’ band, Undead, has just very recently come out of a controversy concerning the use of misogynistic and homophobic language. When a pride flag was thrown on stage during an interlude, Jones eagerly picked it up, presenting it to the audience, which led to mixed reactions in the audience, with some boos ensuing and several people gesturing for him to hand it over to SAINT, who reacted with irritation: „We’re not doing this.“, they stated, taking over the mic to remind the crowd that Jones, who is bisexual, was also a member of the community and „shows people a lot more kindness than I do“. Jones appeared slightly shaken by the crowd’s reaction, but seemed equally happy for his friend’s support.

#5 The Encore

By the time the crowd was begging for an encore, I was sold - the two artists had taken all of us into their two deeply distinct worlds: Jones’ sensations of anger, fear and perseverance in a world that is inherently against you, juxtaposed with Harper-Yamaguchi’s mindset of hazy sentimentality, regret and yearning, as well as the realisation that to her, the scary thing about the world isn’t its hostility, but its indifference. The two forces bleed into each other repeatedly over the course of the evening, allowing fans of one of the artists to get to know the other, giving them a chance to understand who they are and why their bond is self-described as invaluable. I had reached the end of the show, being sure that this was my takeaway; that this concert experience was crafted in a way that allows two very different camps of young people to gain appreciation for the other, because their idols have always held this appreciation. And then, both of them returned to give us one last encore - as a professional, I thought I knew what to expect: A final collaboration tying their styles together before sending the crowd off; yet what we good was so much more unique than that: A true-to-the-source-material cover of actress Lucia Hernandez’ (22) 2009-blunder „Friday“. The crowd went wild (partly, as I found out later, because of a viral video that showed the two partying to the notorious bop at a karaoke-club a few weeks ago) and I was completely transfixed, quietly cursing at myself because this completely messed with the holistic picture I had of the show. I wasn’t sure what to make of it - but I couldn’t help but cheer along with the crowd, because SAINT taught me that nothing matters, and Sebby Jones taught me that sometimes, Friday can happen on a Tuesday.

Red, (don’t get me wrong I like him as a character) but I think he’s very sensitive, and I’m not very good with sensitive people, or Mater maybe. Other than that I don’t think I would have problems with anyone.
