I feel like the yyh community dosen't talk about sensui enough. Sensui is probably one of the best antagonist ive ever seen and it sucks no one talks about him hardly.

Sensui was a man of a justice system that was unblinded with obvious one sided ideals (demons = bad, human = good) it wasn't until that one night that completely made black and white turn to gray, his morality shattered, everything turning into a murky puddle.

Humanity doomed itself that night, turning the man who fought for it, to turning against it.

But it also made Sensui reflect, made him question himself, made him want to open his eyes and balance the scale as to why demons were so bad which led to Sensui down to opening the barrier between the worlds, if he could understand the same thing he'd use to hunt down maybe it'd put his mind at ease. himself at ease, maybe he'd finally understand.

Although these fictional characters' stories ended for them at 18 it doesn't mean that Yusuke and the gang stop being important, interesting, or compelling to us. It also doesn't mean that we have to stop loving these fictional characters and their stories after we turn 19.

If you as a minor 14-17 or someone aged 18 - 25 thay feels comfortable shipping these characters, viewing art of them, and reading fic about them ESPECIALLY NSFW art/fic; but your skin crawls that people older than you are creating that content, then you need to sit down with yourself and ask yourself if fandoms that are literally older than your existence are places that you are ready to be socializing in.

Fandoms that are older than your existence will have fans that are MUCH older than you and they are making content and having interactive conversations.

Yu Yu Hakusho is not an Adult Only fandom but it is a fandom that is Mostly Adults.

I fell in love with this show when I was a pre teen. I'm in my mid 30s. The show's target audience is teenagers. But here is the thing: it's target audience was teenagers back in the 90s and 2000s and that's still most of its audience today because Togashi told a fun and resonant story that tends to stick with its audience.

If you can't handle shipping content or adult conversations (conversations about mature topics and themes not necessarily 18+/NSFW but these are definitely present also) about Yu Yu Hakusho then you should try to avoid adult spaces when searching for discussion or content and stick to spaces specifically for minors.

A space specifically for minors would have a ban against all 18+/NSFW content that is strictly enforced. It would not have an 18+/NSFW section at all.

Tumblr and most of the discord servers for YYH that I've seen are adult spaces. Because there is an expectation that while minors are allowed on the websites they must be over a certain age with parental permission because adult conversations happen here where minors could see them.

All of this to say: Unplug from the adult spaces if you feel uncomfortable with adult themes and content or 18+/NSFW content.

Talk to friends irl about Yu Yu Hakusho or find a minor focused space online to talk about it. Come back to the adult spaces in a few years.

This applies to the 18 - 25 crowd also. If you can't handle seeing someone ship these characters or if someone ships them in a way that you don't agree with and it's so upsetting to you that it's causing you a great deal of anger or distress then you need to consider if you really want to be in the Greater Online Yu Yu Hakusho Fandom at this particular point in your life. Or if maybe you want to filter tags on tumblr and drop sites that you can't filter to make your fandom experience more smooth.

If Yu Yu Hakusho has lasted 30 years then it'll last another 3 or 5 years while you get adjusted and engage with Yu Yu Hakusho in minor focused or safely filtered fandom spaces. Trust me. Yu Yu Hakusho will be somewhere on the greater internet when you're older and you've gotten better at self regulating your intake of content online and your response to seeing content online that you don't like.

Yusuke, Kazuma, Kurama, Hiei, Keiko, Botan, Shizuru, Yukina, Genkai and the rest will be here when you get back. That's the great thing about resonant media. It sticks around because people connect to it.

You’re spitting nothing but facts. I’ve said this exact same thing on both of my previous blogs (not this one, not yet xmdkxkdnd) about how x reader just was not a thing in Ye Fandom of Olde. I don’t know if people really believe me or if I just sound like a hunch backed crone standing on her front porch waving her cane at the neighborhood kids, yelling at them to appreciate what they’ve got because back in my day … but it really was such an incredibly different landscape. There are certain aspects of it that I miss for sure and others I’m glad to leave in the past.

The completely random conversations between the author and the character(s) among them, GOD, the way that still activates every single one of my cringe reflexes. 😂 Actually my all time favorite fic had those for the first dozen or so chapters, but she thankfully left them in the fore and afterword, not haphazardly placed in the fic itself, so it was easy to ignore haha. I can laugh at it and maybe even look back at it fondly, but I don’t think I want that particular trend to make a comeback any time soon xmxmdnd

We can both be crones, in that case! But no, I completely get what you're saying. It was SO different. I am genuinely appreciative of the fact that "reader fic" is so popular and the distaste I see for it is mainly "it's clogging up the regular tags" rather than the absolute nastiness that used to be associated with any OCs or inkling of "hey I like these characters, wouldn't it be neat if they wanted me?"

OCs in general were considered taboo enough, but reader fic was just… not a "thing" back in the early 2000s, really, not in the style we know it today. When second person was used, it was usaully meant to be stylized (rather than today where the intent of second person is "reader fic," to pull the reader into the story in a different, visceral way) and second person fics would fall into the OC bucket.

Gosh on that note, I remember "Mary Sue Hunter" groups that would find any OCs on ye olde fanfiction.net and leave reviews with forms to determine how much of a "Mary Sue" someone's OC was.

If you were going to attempt an OC, it felt like you had to make them Super Super Boring and Normal and Ordinary and No Actual Characters Ever Fell in Love with Them (except maybe non-important side characters) in order to get people to leave you alone.

Not that there's anything wrong with writing characters who are ordinary but it rarely felt it was an organic decision from the authors, but rather a reflection of what was "okay" to write.

Fandom is so different now. As you said, there's some things I miss ("don't like, don't read" and "you're responsible for what you read" being the standard etiquette, for one...) but plenty that I don't, too.

Also, if I may ask, are you by any chance a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho?

Yessss. I love it. I have so many discarded OCs from my teenage years from YYH, they were all ridiculously self-indulgent ofc. I do want to at some point write a few yandere YYH characters, but I haven't gotten any inspiration for it yet.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have a really long Jet/Zuko High School AU fic that I doubt I will ever pick up again. I was so into it and had so many ideas for that fic when I was still rping in the AtLA fandom, but I've moved on for the most part and I'm not sure I could remember now what the end goal was for that fic or all the things I wanted to include. Which is sad but... it happens.

What are your writing strengths? I have been told that my character dialogue is very good, and I'm a really strong character-driven writer in general I think.

What are your writing weaknesses? Plot. Lol. Coming up with plot ideas is really difficult for me sometimes. And then when I do come up with an idea, they always seem to be novel length monstrosities. Writing one-shots, or anything I can actually finish within a week or so is just so fucking hard for me for some reason.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? I'm always tempted to do this, but it does feel awkward at times, and as someone who is only fluent in English, I'm always afraid of getting things wrong.

First fandom you wrote in? The first fandom I wrote in was YYH, but that’s not the first fandom I published fic for. I kept a lot of my writing private for many years.

Favorite fic you’ve written? Oh lord. This is such a hard question. The fandom reaction to this season is fucking bonkers, I’m seeing so many ppl talk about how this is their new favorite volume and the arcs are so good!! Ruby is fucking dead and the show is treating that like it’s a good thing. Ruby fucking died and her closest friends are happy about this?? How do you look at that and think it’s amazing???? RWBY fans baffle me

Got distracted by Ted Lasso for a couple of days, but I've gotta throw out a couple more asks before we hit the Volume finale tomorrow!

Yeah, I'm not at all confused by fans enjoying a major character "death" (that is, really a suicide allegory resulting in a likely transformation of some kind, not death-death) because that's a complex, compelling, emotionally charged arc for a character, particularly the protagonist. I still think back to kid!Clyde whose jaw was on the floor when YYH opened with Yusuke dying, or the feral phone call I made to a friend when I got to Ned dying in GoT (back when I enjoyed the books lol). The idea of taking a character who is presumably safe due to plot armor/genre expectations and going, "Actually NOPE" does have a certain kind of charm.

... provided it's pulled off well.

Which, you know, is the entire problem with Volume 9. Or the whole of RWBY, really. Awesome concept! Horrendous execution. It's potentially telling that - anecdotally - I think this is the most RWDE-charged Volume we've had in years? Meaning, regulars of the tag are posting more frequently, there are more occasional newcomers than I'm used to seeing, I'm coming across more posts that start off with the necessary (in this fandom) explanation that they still adore the show, but aren't happy with this, that, and the other thing, criticism posted in the wider community is receiving more consideration rather than just being mocked and downvoted on principal.

I mean, full agree, anon. I'm also seeing a lot of celebration for this Volume that I personally can't understand. But I'm also seeing a LOT of worries too, from critics and non-critics alike. I don't think disappointment in the writing will ever outweigh the praise - especially during a Volume where the bees became canon - but the mere fact that each season I'm seeing more and more fans drop the show, give criticism a fair shake, or actively join the RWDE tag speaks, I think, to RWBY's overall trajectory. Again, I'm on a Ted Lasso kick, so it's really easy to compare RWBY to this well-written, highly successful show. RWBY fans think their enjoyment is semi-universal, with critics being a vocal an inaccurate minority, but when you compare that to a show that's actively bringing in new viewers due to its success, knocking it out of the park each week with the character development, giving us FIVE queer characters in as many episodes, inviting criticism primarily in the form of "What we got was great, but wouldn't it have been even better if they'd done ____?" as opposed to, "What the actual hell was that?" ... it really highlights that a community enjoying a show isn't the same thing as that show being "good."

Talking more about this chapter because why not

It’s so very clear that this manga is NOT ending this year. Actually impossible unless Takaba magically solves every problem in the next 4 chapters. Gege’s editor already said like it wasn’t ending yet, but entering that phase. Hoping this phase includes more flashbacks because I’m not dropping my intense desire to see more of the Heian era, especially with the culling games and Kenjaku, Sukuna, Uraume, Tengen, Yorozu, etc. Aaaaa I’ll be so sad if nothing comes of it.

This chapter was hilarious. I’m sure there were a ton of references, but it didn’t feel that lost in translation. Kenjaku and the special grade getting the isekai treatment of getting run over (or Yusuke treatment with the other YYH reference) was ridiculous.

I liked how absurd this chapter was, but also how interesting Takaba’s technique is and how it manages to reveal a LOT about both of their characters.

Takaba’s powers involving soul resonance is satisfying, since that reads to me that, while Takaba’s humor is influencing the situation and kenjaku, their interactions are not completely disingenuous. I don’t think Kenjaku is lying at all when they think that this fight is a part of what makes the culling games worth it and imo I can’t see this fight working with any other character. They’re surprisingly compatible. Which shouldn’t be surprising knowing Takaba’s backstory now and all the tidbits we’ve gotten of Kenjaku’s motives and emotions

Sometimes it feels like I’ve read a completely different chapter when I check tags online since I’ve seen only a few people being this up at all. But there was absolutely something between Kenjaku and Takaba, right?? Genuinely, with the compliments, partnership, loneliness, feeling joy/blushing moments?? Look. I know it’s between one of the main villains and an initially gag character. But this is even more than what took people to see yuuta and maki or choso and yuki as a canon pair. But maybe these chapters completely ruined my brain or people disregard it because it’s comedic. Either way, I’m fully expecting Kenjaku to kill Takaba

Doctor and nurse kenjaku outfits were my favorites! It goes with their mad scientist trope of a character. I can’t believe there’s been endless wardrobe changes after I complained that Kenjaku always wears the same geto cosplay.

Already saw people bring this up, but the last page reminded me of the geto and gojo cover. Interested in seeing where this goes

some other adventures from this have been

three CONSECUTIVE scenes of kuwabara going "you're NOT gonna die on me again urameshi :((" during genkai's tournament. they JUST cut to him for that and then cut away it's SICKENING. like heyy reminder that kuwabara was traumatized a bit by yusuke's death teehee and then back to like. exploding shuriken fights

realizing how much they lean into the "fight me fight me fight me" stuff in the rando arc and how much less that's the case with time because like. they actually become friends who have other stuff to talk about now :)

great beasts/maze castle/saint beasts/WHATEVER arc (and genkai's tourny) has just. they're telling each other to shut up Constantly like even more than i thought
