I actually knew a bunch of this because I'm weird and took a few classes on Yugoslavia in college (two, which was a lot considering my major was medieval studies), but the screenshots are entirely from here on Instagram: @aplasticplant.

Googling "Yugoslavia" starts to bring interesting things into your search results and news feed. This recent article was of interest, but I am not yearning for Yugoslavia necessarily like those interviewed. In fact, this is not nostalgia at all; I need to make sure I keep to facts and discovery. This is about roots and family history.

Villianize: Sophia
Yugonostalgia sent me a bunch of these to fuck around with, which I'll be doing when I have some time to kill.
Now, a major theme in Worm is how thin and artificial the line between 'hero' and 'villain' actually is, and nobody embodies that quite as well as Sophia.
But the thing that, in-universe at least, tips her into the 'hero' side of things is the fact that, as far as the heroes as an institution are concerned, she's going after acceptable targets, which is to say, actually violent criminals or supervillains who have consented to playing the game. So even if the heroes did find out that Sophia shot at Grue with actual crossbow bolts instead of non-lethal ammo, they'd treat her like a hero crossing a line, and not a villain trying to murder someone.
So to put her over that line, we need only look at her role in the story as a commentary on vigilantism, because hyperviolent retribution after you wait for someone to cross the line isn't actually helping anything. This is why it sucks even by comic book standards, but another vital reason vigilantism sucks in reality is that it often doesn't even target who you want it to.
So to emphasise that, you're going to want her to actually be wrong in who she targets. Have her come across a fight, fully misidentify who's defending and who's attacking, enact her violence based on that, and then be utterly unwilling to hear she might have been wrong.
But she'd still be more vigilante than villain. To go full villain, you want to put a little more emphasis on the satisfaction she gets from the violence itself, rather than its targets. It doesn't take much, just have her mentality about people needing to know their place push her to take action against the undeserving even in costume.
Basically, have her target more Taylors of the world.

i'm not delusional or arrogant enough to believe i singlehandedly started this trend of memeification of yugoslav music (god knows yugonostalgia has existed since the 90s & there were pages doing literal translations of lyrics before us) but it is kinda crazy how many have tried replicating that viral cultural moment with eerily similar methods like damn think of smth else maybe

5, 11 and 14 for the ask thing 😌
The ask thing in question
Thanks for the questions! <3
So, I'm a bit of a cheater because I'm Serbian and will probably be choosing Croatian, Bosnian, Montenegrin bits of media as well. Our languages are completely mutually intelligible so I don't care 😎 (also: *is a sucker for Yugonostalgia*, bratstvo i jedinstvo etc.)
5) Favourite song in your native language?
I'm a huge Azra fan so my faves by them include: Ako znaš bilo što; 2.30; Čudne navike; Pit... i to je Amerika; Krvava Meri; Hladni prsti; Balkan; Gracija; Užas je moja furka; Proljeće je 13. u decembru; 3N; (I'm just gonna stop here)
Darko Rundek - Apokalipso; Ruke; Makedo
Miladin Šobić - Đon; Ne pokušavaj mjenjat me; Prođoh gradom; Od druga do druga
From VIS Idoli - Moja si; Maljčiki; Odbrana & Nemo
I'd also recommend the following bands - Dobri Isak, Šarlo Akrobata (one of my favourite bands actually), EKV & Haustor
There are many others, but I'll leave it here for the sake of y'all.
11) Favourite native writer/poet?
Oof, reluctant to admit but I don't read a lot of literature written by native authors (trying to turn this round though!)
Poet - Branko Miljković hands down
Writer - Ivo Andrić (for his short stories and "The Bridge on the Drina" i.e. "Na Drini ćuprija") and Meša Selimović (for "Death and the the Dervish" i.e. "Derviš i smrt")
14) Do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV?
Current state of affairs - Nope. Our TV shows are mass produced, cheap insipid telenovelas.
I do enjoy our cinema of yore though - Profesionalac; Maratonci Trče Počasni Krug (The Marathon Family); Balkanski Špijun are all a great start for getting into Yugo-cinema. I'd be glad to recommend some more

nisi se vratio
rekao si da hoćeš
rekao si dok trepneš biću tu
rekao si dolazim sa crvenim ružama
rekao si pozvaćeš me
i nisi
a kad kasnije
kad od te noći držiš nju za ruku

@yugonostalgia-misc I usually check for novel translations on NovelUpdates, but for this novel I couldn't find it on NU at all. You can try your luck in checking individual translator websites because some translators may just not have had the tl listed on NU. And if it really doesn't exist, then your best bet is to request for a fan translator to pick it up. I just posted this novel on Chrysanthemum Garden's Discord server's #pick-up-requests channel, so let's hope it gets picked up 🙏
Finally found a new Good novel. The kind that is intensely immersive that you won’t even notice you’ve been holding your breath until your body forces you to exhale
and it’s funny coz the eerie tone of the novel is a complete contrast to the lighthearted summary. Then again, I’ve made it a habit to only read the beginning of the summary, skim the middle, and skip the end to ensure I won’t get spoiled. (Chinese web novel authors just love to give everything away in the summary, and I hate that coz it reduces the enjoyment for me)
But even the title doesn’t give you any impression that this is actually a horror story: 男友是万人迷,而我是路人 (My Boyfriend is a Heartthrob, while I am just a Passerby)
I was looking for some light romance, and coupled with that kind of title and the casual tone in the summary, I thought it’d fit. My expectations were also very mid, so when the novel suddenly started grabbing me by the shoulders to bring me close to the phone, it felt like I had found gold while rummaging through the trash
So far, it has been unexpectedly good.
it’s not enough to just read the text as mere text. I feel the need to keep my eyes open and observe everything that’s happening as if I’m within the story.
God, I want this novel translated so bad. I just know I’m missing out so much by only reading the MTL

Strand 1 - Inspirations
For my first strand and my whole assessment in a broader sense, I wanted to focus on Yugoslavian monuments and nostalgic memorabilia intrinsically linked to our culture. Many of these things serve as an inspiration for my second assessment, as they evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for something that I only know about through stories.

The Kosmaj Monument, 1970
This monument marks the lives of fallen soldiers who battled against a group of German soldiers in Belgrade during WWII.

Bijelo dugme, 1983
‘Bijelo Dugme’ (translates to ‘White Button’), was one of the most popular rock bands in Yugoslavia. Formed in 1974, they took the country by storm with their powerful vocals and neo-traditionalist folk music. They’re still often listened to and remain one of the most iconic bands to come from the Balkans.
Here is a link of one of their most popular songs that was featured in the 1988 movie “Time of the Gypsies”:

Lajanje na zvezde (Barking At the Stars), 1998, Zdravko Šotra
Whilst this isn’t technically from the Yugoslavian period, it is a very well-known coming-of-age film about a group of teenagers on their last school trip before they head off to university. It’s highly nostalgic to older generations as the film takes place in the 60′s when many of them grew up and can relate to it.

Rear Window, 1954, Alfred Hitchcock
This is one of my favourite films of all time. I think it also plays into the idea of my assessment, talking about stories and nostalgia-evoking objects. In this particular piece, Hitchcock explores the idea of voyeurism and the privacy of individuals. Here, the storyline is told from the perspective of one of the tenants in the building who spies on his neighbours and finds incriminating evidence against one of them.
