My first time visiting #Taoism #temple. In China and Korea, Buddhism is heavily mixed with Taoism that temple structures and daily rituals are very similar. I could see the statues of many famous Chinese heros such as Ziang Fei, Guan Yu, and Liu Bei. Taoism was organized by a philosopher Lao Tzu by the book Tao Te Ching.

Article #1 : University profile: Yuan Ze University 🎓
My first day : welcoming and integration
The first day in my university, I was totally charmed by the environment. The campus is enormous, I see a lot of different buildings. I was directly welcomed by students and professor and the person who is in charge of international students. In the room I can see a lot of different colours of skin: Africa, Indonesia, Europe, Australia, America… So much different nationalities were gathered in this room. Then the welcoming presentation is starting, informations are shared about the campus life, courses rules, international student life, about Taïwan etc. Then I receive my student ID card. We did a medical check and we could choose our courses.
About Yuan Ze
The university is based in Chungli in Taoyuan at 1h of train from Taipei and not far from the international airport. The university was built in 1989, not too old. It was founded by Yu-Ziang Hsu. The university proposes different department and different kind of studies, as for example Engineering or Humanities studies. There are over 9,000 students between undergraduate and graduate students on campus. The campus has 7 buildings, a sport ground, a pool, a gym center, a dormitory, some shops and lot of restaurant and places to eat. The campus is a little city.
Class content
I decided to live in the heart of Taipei. So I take the train to go to class. I have to take the MRT to go to the Taipei Railway Station and after that I have to take a train to Neili Station, which is the closest station to the University. I made this choice because I preferred to live in Taipei and visit more the capital of Taïwan and be more in the heart of the Taiwanese life. By the way, I have just two days of class (Tuesday and Wednesday) so I wake up at 6am just two times in the week (that’s ok!). The rest of the time I can visit Taipei and the life is easier. The inconvenient is that I’m not living with others international students in the campus but I met other international students in Taipei and it is great to have like “two lifes”. My course schedule is:

I decided to take a mandarin Chinese course also to learn the local language even it is very difficult to learn chinese. I’m in the group 1 for beginners. We learn bases of the language like numbers, letters and pronunciation. I like this course because I’m meeting all of others international students in this course. Because in others courses I’m sometimes with Taiwanese students in the class who are learning also the same course. But I’m always with minimum two foreigners in the class. The way of being in class is very different from France in Taiwan. In the morning, we can eat breakfast in class and talk freely when we want to say something. Teachers interact a lot with students. They are using a lot of support to illustrate the course like sharing videos, films, examples, case studies with a playful way. And all teachers have a “TA”, it means “teacher assistant”. The TA have to prepare the class before the professor arrives. They are in charge of the communication between students and the professor and take back homework. I think it is a good idea because they are volunteer students so they are very sympathetic and it facilitates a lot teacher’s work. The communication is much better, if we have any question or something to ask we just have to tell it to the TA and he will transmit the information to the professor immediately and will find a solution.
My first course of Negotiation was very special, it was unforgettable. I didn’t know where I was, I’ve never had a course like that. This day was a special course and a designer came to the class to explain her work and how to make Greek dresses. It was so weird in a management program to have like a stylist course. The teacher asked me to do a test online to see which Greek goddess I was, I responded to some questions and finally I was Aphrodite. After we learned that in fact gods determinate our way of thinking and wearing, that’s why she decided to make team works according to the god we are. This day was a special case of study. The week after we had a course about the behaviour in a negotiation meeting, it was more like a real course, ouf! I felt better !!
Cultural differences in the classroom and student interaction
Taiwanese are very different regarding work. In class they are not very disciplined, they sometimes sleep in class or talk to each other. In teamwork they are very good workers, they want to do the work perfectly but when giving oral presentations they are very shy and they can’t really speak in public. Btw, it depends on people but very often they are more withdrawn, inside their shell. That’s why it is difficult to become friend with a Taiwanese because we have such a different way of thinking. But they are very fascinated by Europe and others foreign countries so they often ask questions about our life in France and how we feel in Taiwan. We are the most of time with others exchange students who are speaking English also. Teachers are asking a lot foreigners because it is always good to have different points of view. I met a lot of people and had very good friends there. Teachers are also very kind and always want to help. About social life, to communicate they are always using “LINE”, it is like a social network to stay in touch and share files and information. In Asia in general it is very used. It is very useful in team work to communicate.
