INDIES TOP 136 FILMS OF SOUTH ASIAN CINEMA’S 2 GREATEST ACTRESSES - MEENA KUMARI (77 FILMS) & SUCHITRA SEN (59 FILMS) !
A separate Indie playlist, to honour the 2 most popular, highest acclaimed, & widely regarded greatest of all actresses, of the entire Indian & South Asian diaspora – Meena Kumari & Suchitra Sen ! 2 very different actresses in style & school, yet that imbibed the same core depth & ability to penetrate audience imagination & leave them blessed with new vibrant spirit & higher ethos, & even greater admiration for the feminine energy in art. That combined with their eclectic body of work encompassing, one imagines an entire spectrum of female art & life in society at it’s very finest. And even where Hindi audiences at Indies may’ve had a fair taste of Meena jis’s work already, from the various decades lists on Indies Yt page, a great time to view it all in never-before singular artist-based perspective, as well as get enlightened on, in Indie reckoning, the 2nd greatest screen-pair of Indian cinema, Uttam Kumar & Suchitra Sen, the eternal royalty of Bangla cinema for no lesser than 3/4th century, a screen-pair that single-handedly redefined Bangla cinema & raised it to the highest respect & hysterical adulation back in 1950s & 1960s, amassing a veritable treasure house of ‘soul cinema’, a diamond era in Bengali motion art, that saw them competing for highest accolades with no lesser than Satyajit Ray’s brand of ‘life-defining movies’, a divine screen-pairing with Uttam that btw forms nearly 3/4th of Suchitra ji’s life work too. Watch the greatest, in their finest!

Ofcourse, any Music Playlist of the Great One, be incomplete w/o honoring his singing voice- Kishore Kumar. For though other legends like Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, & Mukesh, did sing handful songs each for him, many even placed at very top of charts, with over 330+ recorded songs as a pair, Rajesh Khanna & Kishore Kumar remain inseparable in hearts & minds of music fans across the globe, as perhaps the greatest musical collaboration of Hin Cin.
And since we mentioned the lording over the different (movie) formats, apt demonstration if ever, be in this particular playlist, encompassing jaw-dropping pop, soul-rendering classy raga, really impactful mood music, & seemingly endless evergreen top-class melody, enveloping within it's awe-inspiring range- sensitivity, chutzpah, & heart-melting grace, all combined with a consistently inspiring & stirring lyrical content..to match the depth, skill, & prowess, of the actor on display.
This actor & his music, perhaps the most unique of all, even revolutionary, in combining beat, raga, & emo, & melody, like very few 've imagined !
This, The Holy Grail Of Film Music Playlists.
The One Playlist, (aside few pre-Independence musical royalties), to encompass the multi-faceted greatness of Indian Cinema, all at once.
And herein, few music directors deserve big credit, first & foremost being his most inspirational collab- with R.D.Burman, together serving ~20 films & ~120 songs, followed by Kalyani-Anandji with another ~100, & the father of them all, S. D. Burman with his own handful in contribution, alongside another ~10 films with Laxmikant -Pyarelal. And last but never the least, another less recalled yet hugely influential name in collab, their lyricist partner for close to half o' entire jt career- Anand Bakshi!
P.S .: 185 Films, over 27 yr Lead career, ie. 7 films per yr, with ~ 4 best actor Indies per yr, throughout ! And 105 officially recorded big money-spinning hits! Incl 48 Platinum Jubilees (those that ran in theatres for 75+ weeks non-stop), 26 Golden Jubilees (50+ weeks), 22 Silver Jubilees (25+ weeks), (ie ~100 ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTERS !), & 9 hits (10+ weeks). (Going by the previous most reliable & foolproof method of counting long-term durability of films in theatres,as barometer for success) (https://tooter.in/IndieSpace/posts/107664040311170448)
A phenomenal monetary & critically successful performance card, atleast 3 times ahead of next best, just on plain statistical regard alone, at Indies….Aside power-steering 20 Films into Indies All-Time Top 100 Films Scroll (incl 3 in Top 30, & 5 in Top 50), 40 Films into the Indies All Time Top 300 Hindi Films Scroll, 50 Films in All-Time Top 400, & 60 Films into All-Time Top 800 !
Another record guaranteed to stay untouched in history, being his unimaginable feat of 44 consecutive hits as lead hero, for 8 consecutive yrs, from 1969-76!
Infact days of his film releases across Ind thru the 70s,were such a cultural phenomena, would be marked by a large pan India absence from schools & colgs alike!
HE ALONE HAS 71 FILMS IN TOP 300 BIGGEST BOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS EVER! 👇 ( http://www.imdb.com/list/ls564758654/ )
Reason this is also called 'The God's Playlist' or 'Playlist to the Heavens' !
This IS as great as it gets. ⚜

I never read a single book but loved watching the movies as a kid (my dad downloaded every movie with the hindi dub bc i didnt understand english well back then) i read the cursed child and hated every second and also made my dad buy the copy and also the fantastic beast books. those are sitting in the back of the bookshelf bc looking at them makes my blood boil. Drarry introduced me to the concept of fanfiction. I dont plan on reading the books. But i watched SO MANY theory and timeline and book lore videos on yt. I fall in the rabbit hole once every year. But yeah watching harry potter was a formative memory. But like it was literally a decade ago. I cant leave this fandom bc like HAVE YOU SEEN THE FANFICS? SOME OF THEM ARE LITERALLY MADE ME SOB AUDIBLY UNDER MY BLANKET. i do have like 2 specific ships i ever read about. And its my go to smut pile of a fandom. The varietyy🤌🤌 but jk can suck my trans masc dick-
(my headcanons for the character would make her have a cardiac arrest)
what hogwarts house are you sorted into? :)
The "hated Harry Potter since I was 6" house lol sorry. Probably Hufflepuff?

THE 15 YEAR UNDERGROUND FILM NETWORK OF BOLLYWOOD .
#Indie Review: 'Cinema Marte Dum Tak' (2023) ! Indie Rating: 4.7/5 ! An ode to the most peculiar 'C grade cinema' phase of Bollywood, spanning 15-16 yrs, post the Ramsay Brothers, from late 80's- early 90's to beginnings of multiplex era in mid 2000's. In particular on some o' most known names of this parallel cottage industry - 4 Dirs J. Neelam, only C-Grade woman director of then, Dilip Gulati,a more B-grade cine man, Vinod Talwar, specialist of the horror genre, & Kishan Shah, one of the more outright C-grade successes. And with lesser, but equally relevant focus on, to most eyes the biggest 2 success stories of this era - Queen of C-Grade Actors & Actresses Sapna Sappu (only C-grade infact only non A-grade actress to helm a film on her own acting steam into Indies Top 60 90's Bolly Film spot, no less, a almost unimaginable feet to most logical minds..infact that most B-grade artists confess on being a level of talent deserving of big A-Grade name, given half an opportunity then), ... & ofcourse, The King of 90's & 2000's C-Grade - Kanti Shah! A name most adults attaining puberty in 90's would've heard of, & whose movies be outright lying if didn't aspire to watch at some point in their growing life, given half the (lack of) freedom in India. And whom this writer can confess to've watched, albeit only on Yt later & not more than two, but in wake of this tribute series that now plan to explore just a little more..(research you see )! A man,who early on made a fair & square name, thru catchy dialogues aided by dialogue writer Basheer, & then by managing to lure A-grade actors incl Dharmendra into his films by paying high daily wages, & cash in hand before shooting itself! But also a man infamous for bringing about the notorious 'extra portion cinema' era of Bolly in mid 90s, basically cheating & outright illegally bypassing censors, to add many mins of 'hardcore desi porn' at diff spots in his 2 hr film, at theater halls itself, in cohoots with all projector managers! Bringing such a revolution to hitherto open sex -starved lower class audiences, managed to consistently do more biz than even many avg A-grade Bolly earners, many yrs together! Some funny anecdotes on this subject, elucidate how his money-spinning trick led to his downfall too, first when some non Hindi-knowing projectionists,in habit of adding porn to negatives in Kanti's absence too, goofed up big time, adding porn even in btwn Dharam ji's scenes() & intolerably in bro-sis dialogues in closed rooms too, causing riots in the funnily labelled 'hanky theaters'()for having had their sensibilities so offended & insulted,a big time scam thus coming to police knowledge! That combined with high cost multiplex advent, that ended single screen domination,& ultimately led to their ban as well as demise! Also decent bts look at how actors'r prepared for & do spicy 'raunchier' stuff on cameras. Also a time returned to,post 2015 OTT advent, only in more polished corporate fashion. Art, full circle.

I saw your tag asking for more poc sapphics and I have 3 recs!! "the other love story" is an indian web series on yt set in the 90s (with subs!) and it's really really good with a happy ending :D
then there's also "badhaai do" which came out this year. one of the leads is a lesbian and the other is gay (it's again a hindi movie) it's on netflix as far as ik? but anyways it's about a lavender marriage and it's really really great (I love it SO much)
"ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga" is also a hindi movie (not my favorite) but the protagonist is a lesbian and it's about her coming out? idk how to put it properly im sorry 😭
Omg thank you💖 I’ve never heard of them! I’ll definitely check them out

Like a lot of people on this site, when you get fixated on an actor or actress, you try to go through their whole filmography for your thirst lol
My current fixation is everything Toby Stephens. Saw him first in Black Sails years ago, then Lost in Space and with a rewatch of Black Sails, decided to delve into all the things.
As it’s his birthday as of posting this, thought it’d be appropriate to share C:
These are not in any particular order, and I’ll keep spoilers out for those who want to watch for yourselves. Overall, Stephens has a lot of variety in his acting, and there’s actually quite a handful of LGBTA+ roles, either out (Black Sails) or ambiguously (Mangal Pandey). Whether he’s irl bisexual or otherwise (he’s married 20+ years to Anna-Louise Plowman) I don’t know and far as I know he’s never said anything, but if you’re looking for more of him in LGBTA rep beyond Black Sails, he does have it.
There’s several more I’d like to see like the new “And Then There Were None”, and “Summer of Rockets” but might be awhile as I haven’t found free versions of either. He’s also going to be doing something related to Oscar Wilde but have yet to see any further news on when that’s coming out.
Anyway here we go...
Twelfth Night - I enjoy Shakespeare though I have some trouble keeping up with the language, fun nonetheless and a great adaptation. Pretty sure this was his first movie where he played a lead and he did so wonderfully as Duke Orsino. Photographing Fairies - Based on the Cottingley Fairies hoax, its an interesting mix of fantasy and also a bit...unsettling? I guess? (not horror though). He plays a photographer who lost his wife in an accident and is approached to look into a photo of a woman’s daughter who is allegedly holding a fairy.  Mangal Pandey: The Rising - Based on the events that started the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he plays Captain Gordon, Mangal’s closest friend. This is a Bollywood and its such great fun, beautifully shot with great costumes, and probably one of my new faves. There is a free version on YT but the subtitles are out of sync, so you’re better off finding it to rent, unless you can understand Hindi, which is spoken throughout most of the film, even by Stephens who learned to speak it fluently.  The Machine - If you’re looking for Stephens in horror, this is it. Robots and those with robotic implants are being used to fight a war with China, Stephens plays a scientist who is in charge of creating said robots-or rather perfecting the AI-but is secretly also trying to find help for his daughter. I cried for sure. Hunter Killer - A sort of cross between The Hunt for Red October and The Sum of All Fears. He plays an irritable US Seal who has to help the Russian president, so if you’re looking for Stephens angy and yelling, here you go lol  Vexed - This is an 9 episode (2 seasons) comedy drama. Super tiny series where if you want to see Stephens at some of his funniest, definitely worth a watch. It does have that House MD feel where the character he plays, Jack Armstrong, is an absolute shit of a person who's great at his job. First season is far more funny imo, but in the second season you get to hear him sing. Agatha Christie's Poirot: Five Little Pigs - Classic Christie’s Poirot, great murder mystery about an artist, and Stephens plays the artist’s closest friend. Jane Eyre - A very pretty Mr. Rochester. That is all lmao BBC Robin Hood - Stephens doesn’t show up until the 3rd season, and plays Prince John. The show itself is mediocre in writing, nothing exciting. They tried to keep it generally light with the whole “oh those merry men, they fooled the sheriff again!” vibe, but the first 2 seasons of it was sorta a slog. Honestly the only thing that kept me going was Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne. When he finally shows up, Stephens absolutely steals every scene as Prince John but his screentime is sadly short lived and he’s only in a handful of eps. Watch it for Richard in order to watch it for Toby lol
The Best Man - If you want to see Stephens be an Unsettling Presence, check this 2-part series out. Stephens plays an over-protective friend, Peter, to the main character, Michael, who ends up in rehab, and finds love and eventually a wife. Peter stalks the pair, jealous or perhaps looking out for his friend? hmm Have to watch it and see! lol The whole thing is on YT but the quality is sorta shit so might be better off renting it. Private Lives - A perfect example of why theatre should always be recorded and made available to all. Stephens is terrifically hilarious, playing a character who bumps into his ex-wife while on the honeymoon of his new one.

first off : HOW ARE YOU? (i hope you're okay)
secondly:
could you direct me towards any resources to learn Bengali? I really wanna learn.
I'm a complete beginner. COMPLETE. (ik hindi if that counts for anything)
also like, i can't spend money on anything (strict parents hahaha)
Thank you so much n bye!
<3
Helloooooooo
Yep, just 'okay' xd. Hope you're doing fine though :)
Oh knowing Hindi (or any other Indo Aryan language) does count! Because you already know how the abugida (writing scriot typical to most Indian languages) works. You also have a strong base of tatsam words (Sanskrit loanwords, we use a lotta them in the Bangla).
There are a lotta resources available online but here's my pick (including stuff I created):
Firstly, you should know a little about the language before you begin. So here are some Wikipedia links:
They even have tables of pronouns, verb conjugations etc so do check it out.
Next, you might wanna learn the alphabet and the pronunciations... I've made a playlist on that:
Learning basic phrases beforehand helps too:
And now you're all set to begin your language learning journey! This YT channel has good videos... I suggest you to learn spoken Bangla first before attempting to read and write.
And since you already know Hindi, this should help:
And listen to this podcast:
This website is pretty cool too:
Conjunct consonants can be a pain in the arse... So here's a table for u:
And I find these apps pretty helpful for language learning:
Once you have certain grasp over the language, I'd suggest you to consume as much Bengali media as you can. Listen to Bengali music, watch Bengali movies, read Bengali short stories and poems (or novels if you'd dare)... And it's really nice if you have Bengali friends who are willing to help you out. I'll, of course, be available in the asks if you have any doubts or need help. All the best! ^^
