Watching internet news makes me so glad that YouTube banned my country from monetising videos. This ban automatically stopped ads from appearing and I kinda forgot that YouTube even had them in the first place
And now I'm watching a video about the adblock war and wow.. y'all have ads directly in videos now??? That sounds horrible, I genuinely feel bad for you all
I hope someone sues YouTube for this whole advertising thing

not sure if you've seen it already but you can also add some script into 'my filters' on ublock on firefox that stops youtube detecting it! i've had the popup a few times on firefox too but putting that in stopped it entirely
here's the scripts in case you haven't seen the post going around:
youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false)
youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0)
youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, [])
youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)
Ah I have not seen this thank you! As of rn, Youtube doesn't seem to be able to detect ublock on Firefox normally, but it's only a matter of time before they catch up so I'll add this to be safe!
There's also another extension, AdNauseam, that I've heard tricks the Youtube filters but auto-clicking on all ads in the background. So you don't see ads, but according to Youtube, you not only saw all of them but also clicked on them too. I don't have that, but I'm keeping it in the back of my mind for when Youtube inevitably figures out how to get around ublock.

@ Youtube just let me be clear. If you try to force me to watch ads on desktop again after the last time I evaded you I will fucking kill you. I mean murder. There is a bloody knife in my hand.

How to stop Youtube ad detection because No. Absolutely Not.
This fix has been working for me for about 2 days so far, and is still working as of 10/20/2023
I use Adblock Plus, though in theory if your preferred adblocker has a custom filter option this should work there as well.
If you know your way around your adblocker I'll frontload what you need to put in, but I'll also go over a step by step for Adblock Plus (Please bear with me, I've done tech support for the General Public and as such I instinctually have to be as thorough as possible... in what is frankly an insulting degree for most).
Filters:
youtube.com##.style-scope.ytd-popup-container
youtube.com##.opened
>Open up Adblock Plus, either in your pinned section or from the extensions button (the puzzle piece) in the upper right.
Tumblr media
>Select the gear icon in the upper right to get into settings.
Tumblr media
>Go into Advanced in the left hand menu
Tumblr media
>Towards the bottom should be My Filter List, go ahead and type the filters I provided above.
Tumblr media
Now (optional) say fuck off youtube and go about your day~

Getting real Tired of Youtube putting random crap on my homepage and in my recommendations that seem to have no relation AT ALL to anything I've previously watched or shown interest in.
Why are you recommending me reaction streams about children's shows that have less than 500 views and was posted/streamed two days ago? Or abhorrent teeny-bopper """Pranking""" videos even though I've blocked every """Prank""" channel I've ever come across? Or streams of games I've never heard of and have no relation to the genre of gaming streams I actually have? Or, my personal favorite, videos from new/hacked channels that are promoting/instigating straight-up scams.
Is this your way of trying to give smaller creators more visibility?
By just shoving them into the face of people who don't have a history of being interested in [or even vehemently repulsed by] that type of content?
What happened to your algorithm, Youtube? You used to be so good at recommending similar content to what a person has a history of watching, but that seems to no longer be functioning at all. Is it because you got in trouble for scrapping kid's data so you just had to throw that entire feature out the window? Or is this your way of trying to circumvent what your viewers wants so you can just try to shove more monetized, ad-ridden trash down people's throats?
You're just throwing random shit at people like "Here! New Video! Less Popular Creator! Watch this!" and it is very annoying.
Putting random stuff that's unrelated to what I'm interested in isn't going to make me click on or watch this random stuff. It just makes me click the 'Don't Recommend Channel' button bc that's the only way to keep it from cluttering up my actually preferred content. Which in turn harms that creator you're half-assedly trying to 'support'/'give visibility to', or whatever this garbage is.
Give that crap to the people who are interested in it. Give me stuff that I'M interested in. It's not that complicated to retain viewership interest. You'd already figured out how a decade ago, Youtube.

ad blockers actually break all the time. they're not "set and forget", you have to manage them. the youtube situation is kind of an unfortunate result that comes from combining: people who aren't very tech savvy, a very high profile website used by a huge number of people, and that website putting what's basically a threat in their anti-adblock warning. altogether that is causing a lot of people to yell all at once about something that's relatively typical.
advertisers and ad blockers have been at war since the first ad hit the internet. this was always a thing, and will always be a thing. when you have an issue just look up a workaround. if one doesn't exist yet, give it 24 hours.

Google confirms they will disable uBlock Origin in Chrome in 2024
Google confirms they will disable MV2 extensions including uBlock Origin in mid 2024 https://developer.chrome.com/blog/resuming-the-transition-to-mv3/ https://9to5google.com/2023/11/16/chrome-extensions-disabled/
(November 16th 2023)
from the comments (emphasis mine)—
[comment:] Not so fast there partner. Hill has prepared for the scenario with a new extension. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin-lite/ddkjiahejlhfcafbddmgiahcphecmpfh
[reply:] Yes, but ublock origin lite lacks a lot of features that actually makes ublock the best:
“ uBO Lite: • Filter lists update only when the extension updates (no fetching up to date lists from servers) • Many filters are dropped at conversion time due to MV3's limited filter syntax • No crafting your own filters (thus no element picker) • No strict-blocked pages • No per-site switches • No dynamic filtering • No importing external lists ”
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1067als/eli5_ublock_lite_vs_ublock_origin/ Not being able to update the filters without having to update the extension itself is a really big deal! I mean when ublock 1.53 came out, it took google almost a freaking week to finally allow the new version. Why is that a big deal? Imagine that you have a site that you use a lot, that site then implements a way to detect adblock but you are stuck with ublock origin lite, in other words, you can't craft your own filter to by pass that site anti-adblocking (if you have the know how), you can't also come to ubo reddit to ask someone else to craft them for you and with that instantly solve the issue and you also don't have access to element picker which could also solve problem! Now, the only thing you can do? Report the problem to ubo team, then wait until they add the new filter which will bypass the antiblock to the new version of ubo lite which you don't know when its getting released and after that you will have to wait until google authorizes the new update to be released which like I've said, takes several days! Another example is youtube itself, if we were stuck with ubo lite right now, we would be losing the war against youtube anti-adblock badly! Because the only reason ubo is kinda able to keep up with youtube anti-adblocking is because after youtube updates their blocking script (which is every 12 hours), ubo team then updates their filters and then we as users just need to run the update manually inside the extension and boom we are back on business! Which won't be possible with ubo lite at all.
Firefox also plans to eventually deprecate MV2 (no timeline yet), BUT Firefox's implementation of MV3 will allow extensions like ublock origin and privacy badger to continue actually working:
Mozilla's implementation of Mv3 will differ in two critical ways from Google's. First, it will provide developers with access to the APIs Google considers too troublesome to retain.
"While other browser vendors introduced declarativeNetRequest (DNR) in favor of blocking Web Request in Mv3, Firefox Mv3 continues to support blocking Web Request and will support a compatible version of DNR in the future," said Shane Caraveo, engineering manager for WebExtensions at Mozilla, in a blog post. "We believe blocking Web Request is more flexible than DNR, thus allowing for more creative use cases in content blockers and other privacy and security extensions." (However, Caraveo says Firefox also intends to support DNR for its performance and compatibility characteristics. The blocking version of Web Request can slow things down if coded clumsily, so Mozilla wants developers to have the option to use the less intrusive and less dynamic DNR API.) Second, Mozilla is supporting Event Pages in Firefox's Mv3 implementation. Mv3 dispenses with persistent background pages – scripts that run in the background, potentially slowing things down and consuming resources. As an alternative, the spec provides Service Workers – scripts that run and then shut down. But the Service Workers API – which Mozilla intends to support eventually – does not have access to the Document Object Model (DOM) or other WebAPIs. So Event Pages – non-persistent background pages – provide more options for developers.
(obligatory: switching from chrome to firefox is easy. it can import your autofills, history, passwords, etc. without any headache. it is not hard to switch)

Posting this on main in hopes someone sees this and spreads the word, because I think it's important.
I just got an ad on Youtube, for what seems like a legitimate documentary, published by Epoch TV. It's a docudrama.
The ad topic? "Transgenderism". The trailer for this documentary presents the "Transgender Movement" as an agenda created by social media, corporations, the government, social media, etc. as a means to create a division between Parents and their Children.
This advertisement, EXPLICITLY says that. It says "They're turning our children against us [parents]". It says "'You should let your child transition. Or else their chance of suicide increases.' Therapists are trained to say that."
This so-called truth-revealing documentary presents the "Transgender Movement" as a war against Parents. It is FEAR MONGERING and MISINFORMATION. It is TRANSPHOBIA.
It's blatant lies if you're educated enough about trans people. It's not blatant lies if you're uneducated about trans people. It's an advertisement directed at anyone who isn't educated about trans people, who don't have the time, or energy, or education to look up real research studies.
It's an ADVERTISEMENT, directed at PARENTS. On YouTube. YOUTUBE. This is an advertisement I got on a video that was an anime song quiz. Anyone can get this ad.
Really YouTube? You're going to force everyone to stop using adblock, and then play this shit? This passed your advertisement standards?
This is what the website looks like. There is an embedded trailer if you scroll down.
Tumblr media
Beneath the trailer, there are 14 featured guests. Most of them are labeled as anti-trans activists or "investigating the roots of the transgender movement", or something similar, on a quick google search. They have "patriotic", conservative, and/or religious beliefs.
Tumblr media
Beneath that, there are three reviews.
Tumblr media
All three of these reviewers are in the movie. And profiting from the movie.
Pamela Garfield is a known anti-vaccination, anti-trans activist. More information can be found at this link.
Walt Heyer is a detransitioner. I do not know much about him other than the fact that he is also an anti-trans activist. More information can be found at this link.
I'm fucking pissed about this. There is already a lack of media literacy. There is already a lack of critical thinking skills, fact checking, etc.. There is already enough hate towards trans people.
It should be ILLEGAL to present your propaganda as fact and scientific research. It should be ILLEGAL to intentionally spread misinformation, advertised not only as "the real truth" , but also using it as a means to make money. It costs you $5 to watch the documentary. That is evil, preying on people who are uneducated or who won't google a researched statistic, and then manipulating them to parrot your beliefs.

Why the FUCK is this shit being pushed in my recommendation feed. I looked into this and it's about as racist as you would expect (basically an entire doc devoted to defending Zimmerman and villainizing Trayvon).
Maybe Youtube should sort out their radicalization pipeline algorithm instead of spending God knows how much money on slowing down videos for Firefox users and engaging in a war with adblockers.
