Eye Town Youth Community Council meeting was held on Friday. It is all ready proving it is punching above it’s weight. The youth have a very large appetite to get involved and get the job done. The Mayor of Eye Councillor Johnnie Walker was impressed at both the involvement and commitment shown by the council. An Agenda which covered Football, Jobs for the youth of Eye, clearing the litter in the town, involving themselves in the Kings Coronation celebrations, Opening of Oak Crescent play and fitness area, Heritage Open Days involvement and taking on the Heritage New Wave programme for next year. FAVE's June Summit

This past June, FAVE's Board of Directors and Youth Council had a great and successful Summit at Bellevue Hospital. Side-by-side conference rooms at the historic Manhattan psychiatric hospital were arranged by Dr. Allen Keller, the father of FAVE YC member, Rachel Keller.   Sarah Clements and Amy Chen from Generation Progress led a brainstorming session exploring the root causes of gun violence and asked everyone to identify allies and develop strategies to motivate the youth generation.  Leah Gunn Barrett and Shaina Harrison from New Yorkers Against Gun Violence shared a wealth of knowledge and urged the group to support Nicholas's Bill (requiring safe storage of guns in New York homes) and reACTION, an after-school educational program for youth living in New York City communities plagued by gun violence.    

The first afternoon session focused on planning the Chapter Initiative for the coming year and the final workshop addressed social media.  Adam Polaski from the phenomenally successful Freedom to Marry discussed how to use social media as an engine to create social change. The Youth Council then met to strategize on ways to utilize the social media tools that Adam described. The Summit gave the Youth Council a chance to decide its top goal for the year. They chose to focus on restoring federal funding for research into the impact of gun violence.  At present, such funding is being restricted by Congress. The Board fully supported this decision which highlights our educational mission.   The next twelve months promise to be one of growth and evolution for FAVE as we establish our presence on high school campuses and beyond.  Please help support the FAVE Chapter Initiative by signing up and donating on our website.
