🌍 **Celebrating World Soil Day with Our Community!**
TMI organized an event on World Soil Day (WSD) to engage with smallholder farmers in Marurui, the community, youth, and children to honor our silent hero, soil. We were deeply honored by the presence of Joseph Kihiu , the landowner, the chief of the area Mr. Orina, representatives from the National County, and the Roysambu Subcounty environmental department, Mr. Felix S. and Daniel W. We also welcomed leaders from various organizations who generously shared their knowledge on soil conservation: Cynthia Mumo (TMI Founder), Tabitha Gathoni from Mazingira Urban Networking, Joseph from Roysambu Green Foundation, Benson from Wetlands Conservation Organisation , and Nancy from Reclaim Your Soil Vetiver Association Additionally, we were privileged to have Mr. Kamau, the chair of Starehe Kienyeji Farmers, representatives of Youth Power Farmers, Women in Ecological Justice (Agnes Mwangi), and members from Young Lions.
The event began with an insightful presentation by Martin Kahanya from TMI's research department. He showcased an exhibit that vividly demonstrated the difference in soil structure and integrity between tilled and untilled soil. His explanation emphasized the importance of minimal or no tillage to conserve soil and prevent erosion, and the practice of agroecology to avoid harmful chemicals that disrupt the delicate ecosystem beneath our feet. He stressed that conserving soil is crucial as it is the cornerstone of life on Earth; losing this precious resource means facing food insecurity and malnutrition.
In the second session, we conducted a citizen science led by Mogaka Benson activity on Gumba Wetland, where we assessed the levels of phosphates and nitrates in the dam, turbidity, and the overall ecological status of the wetland.Nancy then led the third session, showcasing soil samples enriched with vetiver mulch compared to those using traditional amendments like cow manure. Her visual presentations highlighted the numerous benefits of vetiver grass, including its ability to filter soil and water, control erosion, and maintain soil structure. She also shared other remarkable advantages of this grass with the participants.
The final session was led by Tabitha from Mazingira Urban Networking, who enlightened us on the benefits of red worm rearing using vegetable waste. She emphasized the importance of reusing vegetative waste to reduce methane emissions from decomposition, thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions. She also explained that these worms are a valuable food source for chickens and beneficial to soil health as they help aerate the soil and play a crucial role in maintaining its structure.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where participants eagerly asked questions and shared their thoughts on soil conservation, highlighting the community's commitment to achieving healthy soils. #SoilLifeMatters #OurLandOurFuture #Youth4Land #UNited4Land #sustainableagriculture #youthaction Vetiver in Kenya Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) UN Environment Programme

The recipient of February's Giving Tap is Winter4Kids, a non-profit, youth-serving organization located at the Campus of The National Winter Activity Center in Vernon, NJ. Some people may remember the location as the old “Hidden Valley” ski resort. ❄️ Through outdoor activities and program enrichment, Winter4Kids helps children build skills for life. The life-changing outcomes are that children develop better attitudes towards Self (self-esteem, confidence, resiliency), Health (physical activity, mental, nutritional), Opportunity (sports, academic, life), Mastery (being one’s personal best) and a love of the Outdoors! ❄️ Winter4Kids exists to create healthy lifestyles for youth, and in the wintertime, provide opportunities through a development program to be active and healthy by learning snow skills, namely skiing, snowboarding and cross-country. Nutritious, homemade meals, snow clothing and equipment, and program enrichment are included. Life skills and core values are the heart of the curriculum, with mentorship as a critical component. Their dedicated staff and volunteers connect with kids to impart that they have opportunities in life that they did not think they could have or have access to. ❄️ During the summer, Winter4Kids continues to provide a fun, welcoming and safe place for kids to come and stay active. They offer a weekly camp with unique activities such as archery, biathlon, mountain trail biking, orienteering, hydroponics and culinary, robotics, hiking and arts and crafts. Nutritious meals are always included, and kids get to make kid-friendly dishes using ingredients from their hydroponic garden. ❄️ So, come have a beer from our Giving Tap (it's our Baltic Porter!) because Winter4Kids will receive $1.00 for each draft sold on that tap during February! Must be 21 or older. ❄️ @winter4kids_ #kroghs #kroghbar #brewpub #brewpubnj #thegivingtap #drinkbeer #drinkbeeranddonate #donateforagoodcause #charity #lendahelpinghand #connectivity #giveback #community #youthprograms #wintersports #summersports #youthactivities #healthylifestyle #supportkids #handcraftbeer #handcraftbeernj #craftbeer #craftbeernj #lakemohawk #lakemohawknj #spartanj (at Krogh's Restaurant & Brew Pub) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoH8IU3Oust/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Magic of Orlando Drum & Bugle Corps
youtube
Totally vibin’ this old fundraiser footage from the late ‘80s of Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps. Magic was my corps (2002 babaaayyyy) and I had the honor & privilege to march alongside so many incredible & good folks that I will never forget for the rest of my life.
Ironically enough, fundraising was a huge aspect of why Magic kept having financial challenges (I’ve heard a great deal of horror stories from certain friends who marched in other years). Overall, I always thought Magic had so much talent and I always thought it would have been AWESOME to see Magic have a World Class title.
A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into Magic by so many folks (years before & after I marched). I still think it’s a real shame the corps doesn’t exist anymore, especially because of how many people put so much effort into what the corps had become (and had kept it alive for so many years). Looking at drum corps today makes me always think about how Magic of Orlando would have fit in perfectly with the show designs of today. Magic was ahead of it’s time in certain respects, and had a ton of super talented people in the corps throughout the years.
This early promotional fundraising video is merely a premature idea of what would become Orlando, Florida’s definitive drum corps: Magic of Orlando. For all of the good folks that are still marching these days (well...when circumstance permits): Never take for granted life’s opportunities. Whether it’s a drum corps or a job or a life opportunity - do not squander any opportunities that come your way because ya never know what ya got ‘til it’s gone. This one’s for all of the folks who marched Magic throughout the years and, like me, put in the blood, sweat, and tears, too.
🎉🎺🥁
