Hi. I hope you're doing okay 💞
I want to ask.. how to deal with people shaming you for grieving a person you didn't know personally? It hurts so bad to be ashamed of this.. I posted some ig stories on close friends with tributes for him, a friend replied: "Jesus Christ, it looks like you lost a relative. He is just a celebrity that died." It fucking broke my heart. I've seen people saying the same thing online too about our fandom exaggerating for grieving Liam..
It fucking breaks my heart, how can people be so insensitive? It fills me with shame and guilty to be just feeling emotions. I hate this. I hate it.
This is a good question.
I actually had the news broken to me by a non fandom friend who had no idea the kind of live grenade she was launching at me. She knew I loved the band of course, but I don’t think she and my other non fandom friends realized like… how deeply my love for all of those boys and their music and this fandom went.
To her, he was just another celebrity. Like Maggie Smith. Or James Earl Jones. And yes, maybe a bit more tragic because of how young he is, but not like. Not this.
(Thankfully my irl friends have been incredibly gracious and kind about me processing this grief.)
Some people just won’t understand. And that’s not fair, and it feels isolating. Your feelings are valid though. And I’m sorry you feel shame and guilt, but those feelings don’t belong to you because they originate from someone else telling you how you should feel. Other humans don’t get to tell us how to feel. Our feelings are our own. To process, to dive into, to heal from, etc.
Maybe it’s a lucky thing- that they don’t understand. Maybe they should consider how fortunate they are, to just see this as another celebrity passing, and not be so affronted with grief over it. There are a million reasons to grieve the loss of someone. Celebrity or not, his life was cut short. He died tragically. He’s someone we love. This changes a lot of things, unexpectedly. Our collective futures look different now. All of these are reasons to grieve. And frankly- we don’t have to justify or validate our grief to anyone, really.
I’m so sorry, darling, that someone else has tried to tell you that your emotions, that your experiences, aren’t valid. They are. They very very very much are. You come sit next to me, okay? We can grieve in our ways together. I love you very much, and I’m sending you a big hug. 🫂

ma·nip·u·la·tion noun 1. the action of manipulating something in a skillful manner. 2. the action of manipulating someone in a clever or unscrupulous way. Manipulation. Is that what they call it? I always thought it was called love. No one could’ve guessed that the man who killed my mother was the same man who I let not only into my sheets, but into my heart as well. Certainly not me. Eobard Thawne. Only, I didn’t know, he was a man behind a mask. A mask my heart forbade me to look past.

Of course Leonard was going to say yes, anyway, but he wanted Barry to beg. And beg he did. Of course Barry keeps Leonard a secret, not wanting to admit the truth even to himself. But is he somebody he could love or is he just a distraction from what’s really going on. Can he trust his heart with another? Or is it too soon?
A Misconception of Truth and Chaos
mis·con·cep·tion /ˌmiskənˈsepSH(ə)n/ noun 1. a view or opinion that is incorrect because based on faulty thinking or understanding. Harrison Wells was everything Barry could ask for. He was the guy of his dreams. Of course, it had to be too good to be true. Nobody was that perfect. After everything with Eobard, Barry is confused when he meets Harry. He doesn’t want to but he ends up falling for Harry. Barry has to learn how to separate the face from the person.

HAPPY (One Day Late) BIRTHDAY KRYSTAL!!!
(I really wanted to get this posted on @kmomof4's actual birthday - I've only been trying to get this going since I promised it LAST YEAR! But you have been very patient, Krystal, and here at last is the story I'm working on for your birthday gift. Seeing as you wrote a beautiful CS AU of the Bridgerton book which is a bit of a Cinderella story, and since I've been mulling a bit of a Killian-as-the-Cinderella-character fic for some time, I've mashed that idea together with several of your mentioned fave tropes and characters/relationships from OuaT. I'm not going to list it all here. Hopefully, it will lead to more pleasantly melty surprises as we go. ;p I'll try not to keep you waiting too long between updates - and I have no idea how many chapters there will end up being. I first thought a really long one shot, then a two shot, but Killian and his fairy godmother (and Liam!) were excessively chatty, and it just kept getting longer and longer! I realize Emma isn't in it much yet, but we'll start with her next time.)
I hope you enjoy, Krystal!! I'm so glad we are friends!!!
Also available on AO3 if that is your preference...
"Dreams That You Wish Will Come True"
by: @snowbellewells
Chapter One
“But Liam,” a breathless young Killian Jones argued stubbornly, “why are you dragging me to the galley? You know all I have to get done before the Captain returns…” Swiping the shaggy dark hair back from where it hung in his eyes, long past needing a trim, the young man cringed at the sound of his own wheedling tone. Gritting his teeth and flexing his hands in frustration, Killian chided himself for questioning his elder brother’s direction and sounding like the bloody nuisance he knew he must be to Liam - strong and wise and nearly grown now. At barely seventeen, and with little experience beyond that of an indentured deckhand on a ramshackle pirate ship, what right or knowledge did he have to be so stubborn, especially not with Liam, who had only ever looked out for his best interests?
Sure enough, exasperated, Liam shook his head before responding with a huff, “Can you not just do what I say, Little Brother? For once? You’ll see in a moment.”
By this time, they had traversed the length of the ship below deck, and they stood outside the galley. They paused briefly, with Killian biting down on his tongue to prevent asking again if Liam was sure about what they were doing. To his wide-eyed astonishment, Liam raised a hand to rap his knuckles in a specific rhythm on the door that separated Cook’s domain from the dimly-lit hall. His brother gave him a bit of a wink, more mischief in it than his serious elder sibling, burdened with far too much responsibility for his years, usually showed. Curious now, Killian waited wordlessly with him until footsteps could be heard drawing nearer on the other side.
When the door was opened to them, Killian was perplexed over again as he and Liam were beckoned inward and the door closed behind them once more. Within the room, illuminated softly by a hanging lantern and a few candles scattered throughout, he saw that, not only Cook, but several of the crewmen of the Merry Rogue, had gathered in the small, already overwarm, and easily crowded room in which they took their meals. Killian was usually on his feet serving. Silver would allow nothing less from his “kitchen maid” as he often tauntingly dubbed Killian, hoping to stoke the fiery temper the young lad tried to check so he could then see him lashed for insubordination. It was only well after the others had cleared off that he and Cook could sit and take their own repast. However, those gathered now had secretive smiles and anxiously pleased looks on their faces. Killian noted easily that none of the more hateful crew members were present; neither those who ordered him about loftily, mocking him and sending him scurrying back and forth for items they didn’t really need throughout the meal, nor the cruel bosun who would stick a foot out to trip him, then cuff him for spilling and wasting food. Instead, gathered before him were the softer hearted men - perhaps misfits on the ship themselves at some earlier time before he and Liam were indentured to the vessel - who had often shown him bits of kindness and understanding when they could manage.
In spite of his earlier misgivings, he was intrigued and couldn’t help asking Cook this time, though Liam was still nearby. “What is going on here?”
The older man merely smiled kindly, motioning Killian further into the room, until he stood near its center. “You’ll soon see, lad,” Cook coaxed gently, turning to riffle through a burlap sack laid out on the galley table before offering his prize to Killian. “We’ve something to give you for the evening’s festivities.”
“Wh- what are you on about?” Killian’s brow puckered in confusion as he looked at what appeared to be a pile of folded cloth in his older friend’s hands, and at the eagerly expectant faces gathered around to watch. “Festivities? Me? I haven’t a clue what you’re talking about…”
He was shaking his head as words failed him, not sure how to deal with the puzzle before him, when he sensed Liam at his back, solid and strong. His elder brother placed a comforting hand on Killian’s shoulder and leaned in to murmur quietly in his ear. “Come now, Killy, you have to have seen the banners posted all over port for the gala at the castle, in honor of the Princess Emma’s birthday. It’s tonight.”
Killian sputtered indignantly as Liam nudged him in the side and nodded toward the stack of fine material Cook was still holding out to him. “Aye, of course I have, but - but what does that have to do with me?”
Liam responded with an even more brilliant smile, bowling Killian over with his quip, “Simple, Little Brother! If you would get a move on, we mean for you to attend that ball!”
Those words did not truly make the situation much clearer to Killian’s mind, but at Liam’s urging - knowing his sibling would never encourage something that would do him harm - he took the bundle from Cook and moved forward to lay the offering on the long, wooden table for a better view. He could see now that it was a fine coat, made of soft, midnight blue, expertly tailored and brand new, certainly the finest piece of clothing he’d ever held in his own two hands. There was also a dress shirt, a mere shade lighter, clearly meant to be worn beneath the jacket, and breeches of a soft, dove gray - all quite the ensemble and much finer than any mere deckhand or cabin boy would ever have use for. Despite that, all three items seemed to be in his particular size, and the pleased smiles on the small circle of weathered faces around him clearly meant for him to have the articles.
“This is very kind,” Killian began, trying a different tack since protesting that they must be mistaken had done no good. “These clothes are the most handsome I’ve seen, but surely no sailor, and one barely part of the crew at that, would be invited to such an event. Mayhap someone else could…”
“Perhaps I can explain,” an airy, musical voice spoke up, floating on the air like a tinkling of chimes as sparkles of light and swirls of colorful breeze seemed to catch the eyes of all those gathered in the small ship’s kitchen. Gliding gently toward him from above, a small creature - a miniature woman, a fairy!, he realized - came to to hover before him, a sweetly bemused smile on her delicate face.
More questions flooded Killian’s brain than had already lingered; however, he was now too overwhelmed and in awe to speak any of them aloud. A fairy? Here? Where pirates cooked and swabbed the deck and ate their grub? That he would ever see such a mystical being had never entered his mind, much less the idea that he would encounter one aboard a ship which had seen much more glorious days many years ago. He was sailor enough - a superstitious lot, one and all - to believe that magic existed, fairies among the more familiar imagery of sirens and selkies, but a vague belief in theory was much different from seeing one shimmering before his own eyes, gazing on him with a benevolent smile upon her face.
Seeing that the beguiling young man before her was currently incapable of answering, the silvery-winged fairy’s laughter tinkled on the air like the pleasant ringing of tiny bells, the riotous pile of ringleted brown curls interespersed with morning glory blossoms shook with her gentle mirth before she spoke again, hastening to explain and hopefully to dispel the poor youth’s doubt and confusion. “You are Killian Jones, yes?” she queried, already certain, but awaiting his confirmation nonetheless.
Killian did manage an affirmative nod, and his lips formed a soft “aye”, though it sounded as barely more than a whisper.
“Well then, Killian Jones, it is a pleasure to meet you at long last. I have watched you from afar all your life, after all. I am Nova, your fairy godmother.”
The handsome young man’s bright blue eyes popped wide open at her pronouncement, stunning in their crystal clarity and nearly making Nova’s sweet soul cry at the hope laid bare in his expression, hope which he tried equally to rein in, clearly having already learned such lovely things were not meant for him and waiting to hear the catch. She was the most tender-hearted of all her sisters, and it had been painful for her to look on and do nothing as this mischievous, brilliant little boy had been forced into manhood far too soon. His mother’s death, his father’s abandonment, the privation and shame of unwilling servitude, the cruelty of mistreatment, and the harsh life at sea had all changed the bonny child who had boarded this ship with his father and brother years ago into the solemn young man before her, who had never truly been allowed to leave. She had chafed over and over again at being held back and kept from doing something to help her appointed charge - anything to better his lot, even slightly. Their fairy laws were fickle, and yet exacting; even as Nova honored and revered their ways and her elders, she could not claim to understand why it had taken so long to finally be deemed “the right time”.
She could tell by the furrow of his dark brow that young Killian Jones must be pondering at least some of those same questions. Where had she been these last years of backbreaking toil, pilfered rations, and vicious taunts about a father so desperate to be rid of him he had sold him away? Where had she been the first time the lash had scored his back and left bloodied stripes in its wake? She had been right there beside him, unseen, constrained from taking any action, but he had no way of knowing that.
“I - I have a fairy godmother?” he finally sputtered in stark disbelief.
Nova nodded kindly, having the good grace to look more than a little abashed. “Of course you do! Everyone does. It breaks my heart to think you’ve felt so forgotten.” She squared her shoulders and blinked rapidly, trying not to become emotional as she attempted to explain. “Unfortunately, we fairies follow a very strict code. We are forbidden to make ourselves known before the appointed time. And I kept being told it was not yet that moment…”
Killian’s mind whirled with all the new information - and with a bit of indignance at the idea that all he and Liam had been through since being abandoned and left in Silver’s dubious oversight had not been considered serious enough to merit aid. His mouth opened, and even he himself was not sure if it was a question or a retort on the tip of his tongue - but his immediate awe was finally overcome - when his diminutive magical guest clearly sensed she needed to finish her explanation, and fast.
“My superior, the Blue Fairy, or Blue as she’s often called, is stricter about maintaining our distance and secrecy than most.” Nova shrugged her shoulders in obvious contrition as she waved her hands and a wand appeared within her grasp. “I’ve never really understood why, but that’s neither here nor there. It is finally time to grant your heart’s wish… to do something to make you life better, just as I’ve been waiting to do!”
Killian’s mouth snapped shut again at that, puzzled by her words and disarmed at the excitement bursting from her tiny frame. He had never met this Nova before, but he could hardly doubt her eager sincerity. “My wish?” he repeated uncertainly, feeling that he was trailing considerably further behind in the conversation that he ought to be. “I can’t honestly remember even making one.”
Even as he spoke those words, however, Killian knew in his heart they were not entirely true. It might not have been the focused drive of a wish upon a star, or anything that direct, but he had often thought on where he would go if he were free, what he and Liam could do if they were their own men, left to their own devices, able to seek an adventure of their choosing, honor and glory for the name of Jones which their father had sullied. Had those hopes and dreams been heard all this time, when he had felt so forgotten and ignored? It must be true, though it was hard to reconcile with his previous experiences.
Almost as if she could read his thoughts broadcast across his face, Nova nodded enthusiastically, affirming his realization. “That’s right,” she pronounced clearly, gesturing to the clothing his brother and shipmates had procured for him. The fairy -his fairy godmother! - then effortlessly waved her wand once more, causing one of the flyers ever-present about this kingdom to appear before him from out of thin air. “This ball is only the beginning for you. You have big dreams, Killian Jones, and a calling to fulfill, but you are also the only one who can see them come true. I may be giving you a bit of a boost, but you are more than enough for the task. Your heart is strong, and I have no doubt it will see you through. You only need a little belief.”
“And what exactly does a fancy royal ball have to do with anything?” he questioned. His shock was wearing off as he grew more comfortable speaking to Nova, but he wasn’t seeing why he would be needed at a princess’ birthday celebration. All the same, he scooped all the formal wear up in his arms to go and change - whether it made sense to him or not.
Nova’s entire small fae being practically twinkled at him with the playful wink she gave before answering, “Not all things are as simple as they might first appear, young sir.” With that, she lightly tapped the end of her wand on the top of his head, causing a pleasantly warm tingling to spread through Killian’s body, all the way out to his fingers and toes.
A mere moment later, amid astonished exclamations from Liam, Cook, and the others, he realized that his arms were empty; the new clothes he had been holding already magicked onto his lanky frame, along with shining new shoes upon his feet and a smart queue tied off with ribbon matching his fine shirt and a fresh, neat trim to his dark hair too. It was indeed enough to make him feel a whole new person - one who might not stand out horribly, even at the palace of Misthaven.
“There now,” Nova approved with gentle tone, a fond smile gracing her lips as she took in the full effect upon her charge. “You look quite the young gentleman.”
“Aye, you do at that!” Cook echoed with his rough but friendly voice as he clapped Killian on the shoulder heartily. “Even in our heyday, Cap’n Silver himself rarely looked so sharp!”
“I’d not let him hear you say so,” the old shipwright Ned called over jovially.
“Too right!” Cook chuckled.
The other crew members present laughed as well and began to talk amongst themselves, drifting away now that the excitement was past. Soon, only Liam stood beside him, the two brothers both looking to their benefactress where she hovered before them. Even Cook headed off for his cabin, saying his old bones were ready for his bunk, even if the night was still young.
“You look just like a fine young lieutenant,” Liam affirmed, eyes wide as he took in his younger sibling and needlessly brushed some nonexistent speck from the shoulder of Killian’s jacket. Then, bracing both of his larger hands on Killian’s upper arms, he held him out to gaze into his face seriously before offering in a choked voice, “This sort of adventure should have always been your lot.” Liam pulled Killian in abruptly and hugged him tight for several seconds, startling Killian before he held onto his brother with equal fervency.
“Thank you,” Killian finally managed when Liam released him. “I don’t know how you managed all this,” he gestured around the room, “but I am sure it began with you.”
Liam flushed slightly, looking down with a sheepish smile. “My idea, aye, but I had lots of help. And it wouldn’t have turned out nearly so well if your honest-to-goodness fairy godmother hadn’t turned up!”
Nova’s ringing laughter once again tickled their ears, her eyes crinkling up prettily as well with her good humor. “It really was my pleasure,” she rejoined. But then she added more seriously, “This is your night, Killian. There is much for you to see and to do, and I bid you enjoy every moment to its fullest. I’ve readied a carriage which will take you to the palace, and Liam can ride along with you as far as the gates. Just remember - the ride and the clothes, the gifts you’ve been granted, will vanish at midnight. It’s simply how the magic works. Make sure you are headed back by then.”
Killian nodded, promising he would do as she said; it was far longer than he could imagine needing, if the truth were told. He wasn’t at all sure what he would do there in any case. And though he wished Liam could venture inside with him, he would gladly take the ride to gather more advice and draw strength from his sibling’s company.
After that, it seemed very little time passed before - head still spinning at the sheer impossibility of it all - Killian was disembarking from a fine horsedrawn carriage at the palace gates. Looking back to grin crookedly at Liam, his brother urged once more “Have fun!” and reassured him that all would be well. Turning, Killian bravely put first one foot, and then the other, forward, until he stepped into the castle of Misthaven, a guest at a royal ball.
He slipped his hand into his pocket to run his fingers over the ring on an old chain which had once belonged to their mother (Liam had bid him carry it this once for luck) and pulled in a deep, steadying breath as he gained his bearings. He was already dazzled beyond belief, but determined to make a good showing and bring “honor to the Jones brothers” as he murmured under his breath. Whatever he was meant to find, he would do his best.
At that, he raised his eyes, catching sight of the magnificent winding staircase trailing down from the upper floors into the main hall. Halfway down the steps, paused with one foot poised in descent, was a stunningly beautiful, golden-haired vision in sky blue and silver. Killian could scarcely take in the tiara resting upon her head or the clear resemblance she bore to her likeness on all the recent announcements for her birthday. Laying eyes on her in life had struck him motionless, frozen in place. ‘Bloody hell,’ his mind fumbled inelegantly, ‘It’s Princess Emma herself.’
So completely entranced was he, in fact, that Killian failed to realize the princess was just as stunned - equally taken in and unable to move. Their eyes met and held across the distance between them, and one more shining burst of magic was ignited then and there.

A Christmas Surprise- NEW CHAPTER!!
Summary: Elsa Jones enlists her friend Emma Swan to come up with a scheme to surprise her niece Alice Jones when her Papa, Killian, returns from deployment just in time for Christmas.
If you're thinking this fic sounds familiar, you're right! I originally wrote this fic two years ago, but last year an idea came to me of how I could continue the story. It was too close to Christmas last year to get it done, so I wrote this addition last spring and it's been waiting for December to get here so I could post it!! I still think this fic is the cutest thing I've ever written and I hope you enjoy this continuation. The addition turned out to be much too long, so I divided it up into three chs. The next ch will post on Tuesday with the final ch posting next Friday.
On ao3 from the beginning/ current ch
Words: 5225 of 18,550

All the love and thanks to @jrob64 and @snowbellewells for being the best betas out there. I so hope you enjoy and let me know what you think!

Under the cut, unless Tumblr ate it.
Killian Jones sat in the darkness of the giant present in which he was hiding, waiting for his daughter’s Christmas program to begin. He couldn’t wait to see his starfish when he surprised her after she sang her solo this evening. He was proud to serve his country, but the long deployments made things especially difficult. Having Liam and Elsa so close by and willing to care for Alice when he was gone was a blessing he didn’t take for granted in the least, but he was so thankful that he was home for good now and was eligible to retire in just a few more months.
Which made him think about what would come next. What the future might hold and how the lovely Emma Swan might fit into it. He’d been thoroughly gobsmacked when he laid eyes on the golden haired beauty who was Alice’s teacher when he arrived at the school earlier. And then the revelation that she was single sent his heart rate ratcheting up like he hadn’t experienced since he’d met his late wife. It had been six years since he’d lost his beloved Milah, and the thought of re-entering the dating scene hadn’t crossed his mind once in all that time. He was still relatively young and handsome, but with his very young daughter and Navy career, he didn’t have the time or inclination to put himself back out there.
But Emma Swan might just change his mind on that front.
He knew his countenance sported a goofy, thoroughly besotted smile when he heard movement on the outside of the box in which he sat. Bright light from the auditorium flooded the dark space as the small door in the side of it opened, helping him immensely in the schooling of his features before being confronted with the object of his thoughts as she handed him his dinner.
“Do you have enough light to see to eat in here?” Emma asked, looking around.
Killian grimaced. He hadn’t really thought of that. “Perhaps not.”
“I can stay for a bit while you eat, turn the flashlight on on my phone. So you can see to eat,” she stammered. The blush on her cheeks was adorable, and Killian’s heart rate picked up yet again.
“That would be great. Thank you, Emma.”
She smiled as she moved into the space with him. It was a bit cramped with them both sitting on the floor, but he didn’t mind it at all. He tucked into his Christmas meal of roast turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry salad as Emma told him about some of the antics Henry, Alice, and her cousins had gotten up to this semester.
She told him about Liam Jr and Colin hiding Alice’s pencil box on the first day of school. Meant as an initiation of sorts, it had made Elsa’s morning that much more hectic and stressful trying to find it and make it to school on time. Emma related how she’d had trouble containing her giggles when the twins confessed what they’d done, handed over the pencil box, and got exactly what was coming to them from their mother. Later on the same day, in retaliation, Alice and Henry had hidden away the twins’ lunch boxes. Killian had to stifle his laughter at the story.
Then Emma told him about the time just a few weeks ago when Alice was delayed coming back from the restroom. When Emma went to look for her, she found the child peeking into the auditorium where her cousins were engaged in a basketball game with another school in the area. Colin had just made a shot, and Alice was cheering loudly for her cousin from the hallway when Emma found her. Killian’s heart swelled.
By this time, he’d finished his meal and it was time for Emma to depart.
“Alice’s solo is I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” Emma explained. “Do you sing at all? Why don’t you join her for the last line of the song? She’ll just be singing the stanza we all know and love twice, with a bridge in between, so you’ll know exactly when to come in.” Emma’s face was lit up in the light from her phone, and Killian grinned, even as his cheeks heated.
He scratched behind his ear in embarrassment as he spoke. “I’ve been told,” he shrugged, “I have a reasonably nice sounding voice. I think that’s a great idea. So the second time she sings the verse, I’ll join her for the last line and come out of the box?”
Emma nodded. “Yes.” A little giggle burst from her lips as she rose, preparing to leave the cramped quarters, and Killian was utterly charmed. “I can’t wait to see the look on Alice’s face. I’ve been looking forward to this all week.”
“I have too,” Killian agreed. “When Elsa told me what you had planned, I was excited too. And a bit overwhelmed,” he admitted. “That anyone besides Elsa would care so much about Alice that they would arrange something like this…” He trailed away for a moment. “Thank you, Emma.”
Emma had to look away from his sincere expression, a blush heating her cheeks. “You’re quite welcome, Killian. She’s an absolute dear and one of my favorite students. I’ll see you at the end of the program.” And with that, she slipped out of the box, leaving Killian to his thoughts.
~*~*~
Sitting there in the dark listening to the program going on onstage was torture. He could hear everything, and he had no doubt that if he joined in the laughter with the audience and then the sing-along towards the end of the program, the children on the stage would be able to hear him, thus spoiling the surprise. But the time finally came for Alice to sing her solo. A smile with just a touch of sadness and nostalgia broke over his face. Milah hadn’t been able to carry a tune in a bucket, but she loved to listen to him sing, especially to their baby girl at bedtime. He could hear the piano music, and then his Starfish began to sing with her strong and sweet voice.
I’ll be home for Christmas.
You can count on me.
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents by the tree.
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams.
I’ll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams.
Tears were coursing down his face as he listened, and he didn’t know if he was going to be able to wait for the last line of the song. He heard Alice begin the next stanza, but suddenly, she stopped singing and a hiccupping sob escaped her. Killian quickly dried his own tears and picked up where his Starfish had left off as he opened the box and stepped out in front of it.
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
Killian’s heart melted with love and pride when his eyes landed on Alice. She was looking at Emma who was knelt down next to her and was pointing towards him, tears shining in her eyes.
Alice turned toward him and the confusion on her face melted into pure unadulterated joy when she spotted him.
“Papa!” she shouted.
She ran across the stage and leapt into his waiting arms. His little girl had grown a lot in the last nine months, and he was nearly toppled by her enthusiastic greeting. Spinning around with his daughter in his arms, he planted loud, smacking kisses all over her face. He knew she missed him as much as he did her because she didn’t try to wiggle out of his embrace when he did that.
After he set her down, he looked around the quickly emptying auditorium, finding the rest of his family waiting to welcome him home. He hugged his twin nephews, Liam Jr. and Colin, tightly, exclaiming how they looked more like their father than ever. Then Alice was back in front of him, holding the hand of an older boy behind her.
“Papa, this is Henry Swan,” she introduced. “He’s my best friend.” She turned to her friend with a wide smile on her lips. Killian held out his hand for the young man to shake.
“It’s so nice to meet you, Henry,” Killian said, sincerely. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you befriending my Alice when I deployed last spring.” He looked down at his daughter as she hugged him tightly around the waist, draping his arm across her shoulders. “She can be shy, so it means a lot for someone to reach out to her when she only knew her cousins here at the school.”
The boy blushed as he shook Killian’s hand. “It was my pleasure, sir,” Henry said, a bit shyly himself.
Killian felt his own cheeks heat as he moved toward Emma, scratching behind his ear in nervousness.
“Thank you so much for this, Emma,” he said sincerely. “I truly can’t tell you what it means to me.”
Emma smiled, the action lighting up her green eyes, and Killian caught his breath. “I was happy to do it, Killian.”
He scratched behind his ear again, not meeting her eyes, searching for the words to ask this beautiful woman out on a date. “Could I… uh, would you mind if…” He remembered that Liam was fond of saying a man unwilling to fight for what he wants, deserves what he gets, and Killian had a feeling this lovely lady in front of him was definitely worth fighting for. He finally looked up at her and just spit it out. “Would you like to get a cup of coffee sometime? It’s the start of Christmas break, is it not?” he asked as she looked back at him after looking down at Henry, who stood beside her grinning widely.
“It is,” she affirmed. “And I’d love to have coffee with you, Killian.”
Killian couldn’t keep the grin off of his face if he tried. Being back home with his daughter and family around him, and now going on a date with one of the most beautiful women he’d ever laid eyes on, he had a feeling his life was on the precipice of something great. And he couldn’t wait to see what the future held.
~*~*~
It was Christmas Eve, and Killian didn’t think he could possibly be any happier. Having this time with his family after being away for nine months was a respite he desperately needed. And the addition of the time spent with Emma since they’d met a little over a week ago was only the icing on the cake.
The day after the Christmas program, he and Emma met for coffee, which stretched to lunch, and then all the way to the end of the day. Killian could feel his cheeks heat as he remembered the wide happy smiles on Elsa and Liam’s faces as they passed in front of the coffee shop where he and Emma had met, herding the four children toward Granny’s a couple of doors down for lunch. Killian had been completely oblivious to the time, and when Elsa caught his eye as they passed, he’d pulled out his phone, stunned to find that over two hours had passed in Emma’s delightful company. They quickly settled their tab and joined the rest of them at Granny’s where he got an up front and personal look at just how well Emma and Henry fit into his family. It was enough to really get him thinking about seriously pursuing Emma.
After lunch, he’d been loath to part from her, so had spontaneously invited her and Henry to accompany them as they sought out the perfect Christmas tree. Elsa and Liam hadn’t yet decorated when they received word that he’d be arriving home and decided to put it off until after he got there. It took the rest of the afternoon and evening to find, put up, and decorate the tree.
Since that first all day “date”, Emma and Henry had joined the Jones family for all of the requisite holiday traditions- decorating the rest of the Jones’ domicile, holiday baking, and ice-skating on the frozen pond in the park.
The kids had arranged an ice skating outing for all of them the previous Tuesday. Killian Jones might have served his country in the United States Navy for almost twenty years, but there was a big difference between being on a ship in the middle of the ocean and trying to navigate frozen water on nothing more than a single blade in the middle of his feet. Why they didn’t have double-bladed skates for adults to rent, he’d never know.
But he really couldn’t complain much since Emma was usually the one helping him to his feet when he fell. Alice and Henry had been concerned at first, but the more he fell, the funnier they thought it was. By the time he was ready to hang up the skates and just watch the rest of them, Alice and Henry’s red faces were as much from their laughter at him as from the cold. But again, he couldn’t complain, because seeing the happiness and laughter on his daughter’s face was well worth the humiliation of multiple wipeouts on the ice in front of the woman he really liked and wanted to impress. Thankfully, Emma soon joined him on the bench, where they sipped hot chocolate and laughed as they watched the children cavort on the rink.
Now, arriving back home after the Christmas Eve service at church, Killian couldn’t help the love and happiness blooming in his chest as he watched his family and the woman he was quickly falling for and her son gather around the tree for their gift exchange.
As he stood in the doorway to the kitchen watching them, Emma stood up and approached him. Her smile was bright and happy, and Killian returned it as she got closer.
“I’m just going to refill my glass,” she said, holding it up to show him. He moved quickly to the side to let her pass. A minute or so later, she stopped next to him on the way back out to the living room. “Are you coming?”
“Yes,” he replied. “I was just watching everyone for a minute.” He paused for a moment, and she was silent as he gathered his thoughts. “I’m so happy to be home,” he said in a whisper. He turned toward Emma, not sure if he spoke loud enough for her to hear him. Her eyes and smile were soft, and he knew she had.
“I know you are,” she said. “And I know how happy Alice and the rest of your family are to have you home as well. They missed you.”
“I missed them,” he said, looking back out at the room where everyone else was gathered. “It’s very hard being away from them for so many months at a time.”
“I couldn’t imagine,” she commiserated.
Liam looked up at them then and a spark of mischief appeared in his eye. Killian immediately was on the alert. That look always meant Liam was up to something.
“Oh, would you look at that,” he called jovially, pointing at them, then up to the top of the doorway where they stood.
Killian looked up and immediately felt his cheeks flame. He glanced at Emma, her countenance still directed to the greenery hanging above them, her jaw hanging open slightly. When she looked at him, bashful but pleased surprise was all over her face. He couldn’t believe he’d forgotten Liam and Elsa’s habit of hanging mistletoe in the doorway to the kitchen.
It was a tradition that had begun when they were dating. Liam had Elsa over for dinner in his apartment, and when he started bringing the dishes he’d prepared for their meal from the kitchen to the table, Elsa jumped up to help him. Each time they passed each other in the doorway, they’d kiss, so when Christmas rolled around, they decided it was the perfect place to hang the mistletoe. And it had hung there every year since.
Elsa couldn’t disguise her glee when she looked over at them. “Go on, Killian,” she urged. “You can’t break tradition.” Everyone in the room was now staring at them, with the kids exchanging furtive glances before joining together in only a moderately loud chant kiss kiss kiss. Killian glanced at Alice and Henry, taking in their smiling faces before turning back to Emma.
He leaned in close, never taking his eyes off hers. They sparkled with undisguised anticipation, but he had to make sure she was really agreeable before doing anything else, no matter what the members of the peanut gallery wanted.
“Are you alright with this, Emma?”
Her smile widened even more. “Yes, Killian,” she whispered.
“We’ll save a real kiss for when we don’t have an audience watching,” he whispered huskily, before brushing his lips against the corner of her mouth. He pulled back and was thrilled to see a deep blush on her cheeks and wide smile on her lips. She looked down, embarrassed, before making her way back to the living room where everyone had broken into whoops and cheers of celebration. Killian couldn’t help the surge of satisfaction he felt that she appeared to welcome his advances. He followed her into the living room and sat on the sofa, wrapping his arm around Alice as Liam Jr. got ready to play Santa and hand out the gifts.
Once they were handed out, it didn’t appear to have made any sort of dent in the pile under the tree. The twins and Alice had each been allowed to open two gifts- one a new set of pajamas they got every year, and then a second of their choosing from under the tree. Gifts between the adults would be exchanged in the morning, but Liam had gotten a joint gift for Elsa and Emma who also had gifts for each other, and Alice had a gift for Emma and Henry, Henry had a gift for Alice, and Emma had a gift for Killian.
They watched Henry and Alice open their presents to each other first. Henry was thrilled when he opened a new journal for him to write in, which appeared to have been hand made by his friend and was decorated with writing quotes and stickers. Henry was blushing furiously as Alice opened her gift, a hardbound copy of a story he’d written just for her. Alice and Killian both were completely stunned at the gift. Killian couldn’t imagine the kind of time and effort it would have required to make a gift like this. Alice threw her arms around Henry’s neck and gave him a loud smacking kiss on the cheek.
“Thank you, Henry,” she gushed. “I’ll treasure it always.”
Then it was Emma’s turn, and she opened a travel mug with World’s Best Teacher on the side from Alice, and she was the one to open the gift for herself and Elsa from Liam- a gift certificate for the two of them for a spa day that included facials, massages, getting their nails done, as well as a gourmet lunch. Elsa squealed, and planted a very enthusiastic kiss on her husband’s lips in thanks. Emma laughed at the display.
“I won’t be doing that,” she quipped at Liam, a wide grin on her face. “But, thank you.”
Liam laughed. “I wouldn’t expect you to,” he shot right back at her, his arm around Elsa’s shoulders. “But, you’re welcome.”
Emma then opened her gift from Elsa to find warm fleece pajamas. Elsa knew how hard Emma found it to stay warm in the Maine winters, so the yellow and forest green plaid pjs were very welcome and appreciated. Emma bought Elsa a gift card to her favorite coffee shop that would likely last her at least a month.
Finally, Emma brought the gift she’d bought for Killian toward him. Killian was surprised, and he was sure she could see it on his face.
“You shouldn’t have, Emma,” he protested. “I don’t have anything for you.”
Emma shrugged, but she had a smile on her face. “Don’t worry about that. It really isn’t much. I know we haven’t known each other long, but I feel like I do know you after hearing Elsa and Alice talk about you the whole time you’ve been gone. So when I saw this while I was grocery shopping last week, I thought you probably missed it while you were gone.” She handed him a relatively tall and round gift, wrapped with the same paper that had wrapped the box he’d hidden in for the program. He opened it carefully and his jaw dropped in surprise before his eyes met hers.
“How did you know?” he asked, completely flabbergasted. In his hands was a very large tin of one of his very favorite treats, Pirouline hazelnut creme filled wafers.
“Elsa told me,” she replied. “She found some at the grocery store and bought them for Alice not long after you deployed so she could have one of her Papa’s favorite treats every day, since you couldn’t while you were gone.”
Killian felt the tears gathering in his eyes as he thought of his little girl enjoying the cookies on his behalf so she hopefully wouldn’t miss him quite so much. Emma grinned as he hugged Alice tightly to him and placed a kiss on the top of her head, so grateful to be back home with the ones he loved again.
“Thank you, Emma,” he choked out. “This means a lot.”
“You’re welcome.” She turned back toward Henry, catching him in the middle of a huge yawn. “Come on, kid,” she cajoled. “It’s time to head home and to bed, or Santa won’t come.”
“Uh huh,” Henry replied, a tired yet sarcastic smirk on his face as he rose to his feet. Emma ruffled his hair and smirked back at him in return.
“Or more likely, if you don’t go to bed soon, you won’t wake up early enough in the morning for us to make it to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for Grandpa’s Christmas pancakes,” she added. That got Henry moving quickly toward the door. Emma turned and faced the room. “Merry Christmas, everyone. We’ll see you…” Emma trailed away with a quiet chuckle. “Sometime next week.” Elsa rose to see Emma and Henry out, and Killian squeezed Alice and whispered in her ear.
“I’m just going to say goodnight to Emma, too,” he said. “Is that alright?”
Alice beamed at him. “Yes, Papa. I love Miss Swan. And I know you’ll love her, too.”
Killian was taken aback. Could she possibly mean…? Surely not, she was much too young for that. Or at least, he hoped she was…
Alice wasn’t finished. “You should go out on a real date. Without all of us.”
Killian frowned. “How do you know about dating?” he asked. “Aren’t you a little young for that?”
Alice rolled her eyes at him. She looked just like her mother when she did, and Killian felt a pang go through his heart. “I watch TV, Papa,” she informed him like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Killian rolled his eyes in response.
“So you’d be ok with me dating Miss Swan?” he asked, just to make sure.
Alice smiled and bopped him on the nose. “Yes, Papa.” Killian nodded and kissed Alice on the tip of her nose.
“I love you, Starfish.”
“I love you, too, Papa.”
Killian squeezed her one more time and rose from the sofa, arriving at the front door just as Emma and Henry were walking through it.
“Emma,” he called softly. She turned toward him and the smile that covered her face took his breath away. Elsa gave him a pleased and bashful smile as she moved back toward the living room and the rest of the family. “I just wanted to tell you goodnight, and thank you again for my Christmas present.”
Emma blushed at his words and cut her eyes away from him for a moment before meeting his gaze again. “I’m glad you like it.”
“Uh, I was wondering…” He trailed away and scratched at the spot behind his ear. “Do you have plans for New Years?”
Emma’s smile widened even more. “I don’t,” she replied.
“Would, ah, would you like to go out with me?” he stammered. He didn’t know what was wrong with him. He’d never been this nervous asking a woman out before, not even in the early days of dating Milah. And he’d already spent time with her and was quite sure she was interested in him as well. Maybe it was the fact that his entire family was only a few feet away and could easily hear them if they were so inclined. He hoped they weren’t, but given how they acted earlier when they were caught under the mistletoe, he wasn’t terribly optimistic.
“I’d love to,” she said, her smile even wider, if that was possible, and her eyes sparkling. “I’ll need to find a sitter for Henry…”
“Oh, don’t worry about Henry,” Elsa called from the living room. “He can spend the night here with us. You two go out and have fun.”
Emma’s eyes widened and then cut away from his as he bowed his head and chuckled at Elsa’s offer.
“Thank you, Elsa,” Killian called, only slight exasperation at her obvious eavesdropping coloring his tone.
“You’re welcome,” she called back. He could hear the satisfaction in her voice and could imagine her smug face, even if he couldn’t see it.
“I’ll pick you up at 7?” he asked.
“That’ll be great, Killian,” she said, her smile softening as she looked back out the door toward where Henry was waiting in her car. “I’ll see you then.” She looked back at him, raised up on her toes, and brushed her lips against the corner of his lips, just as he’d done earlier. “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
~*~*~
Some hours later, Killian and Liam sat in front of the dying fire, sipping from tumblers of rum. The rest of the family was sound asleep in their beds, but the brothers hadn’t had much time to be alone, so Liam had stayed up with Killian to help him put together the doll house he’d bought for Alice. And now that it was finished, they were enjoying a quiet drink together.
“How long before you report back for duty?” Liam asked.
“I report back February first,” Killian replied.
“And retirement date?”
“Officially it’s May 31,” he informed him, “but with my terminal leave saved up, the ceremony is April 11th.”
Liam nodded. “Have you given any thought to what you’ll do after you retire?”
Killian took a deep breath. “As far as working, no.” He paused for a moment. “But I have thought about dating Emma.” His voice wasn’t much more than a whisper, but he hoped his brother heard his words and he wouldn’t have to repeat them.
“Good.” Killian looked at his brother to see a satisfied smile on his face. “I’m glad to hear it. With your retirement imminent, you really don’t have a valid reason anymore to not date.” Liam’s eyebrow rose and Killian couldn’t help but bristle a bit at his brother’s words. “Don’t get your back up, Killian,” Liam continued, moving his hands in a placating gesture. “I know you loved Milah very much, and being a father to a young daughter is more than enough reason to be cautious in that area,” he acknowledged, and Killian could feel his ire receding at his brother’s words. “But I know Emma. And I know you. And I think you could be very happy together.”
Killian smiled at that last statement. “I think you’re right,” he agreed.
“And that brings us to housing arrangements.” The smile on Liam’s face made Killian smile too.
“I can’t impose on your hospitality forever, brother,” Killian said.
“There’s a house in the next neighborhood over,” Liam informed him. “It’s lovely. Two story, storage in the back, a view of the sea. I don’t know square footage or how many bedrooms it has, but it looks like plenty of room for a family.” Liam’s face was entirely too innocent, and Killian chuckled and rolled his eyes.
“You don’t need to do that, you know,” he said. “You couldn’t be more obvious. You want me to move here.”
Liam smiled. “You have to admit, the idea has merit. Your family is here, Emma is here, Alice could grow up with her cousins and Henry…”
“But what kind of job opportunities are there here?” Killian asked. “I’ve got some savings, but I can’t live off my retirement. I have a much better chance of finding good work in Boston.”
Liam scratched behind his ear with the same nervous tell Killian had. “This is very hush hush and isn’t public knowledge yet, but the firm is gearing up to open a whole new division for commercial property. With the surge of vacationers we’ve seen the last couple of years, the demand for services has really grown, and we have businesses coming out of the woodwork that need buildings to move into. Storybrooke doesn’t have the infrastructure to support them at the moment. I was the top agent in residential sales for the last two quarters and I’m on track to do it again this quarter as well. I’m sure I could put in a word for you and they’d agree to hold a position for you until April. They’ll be announcing the expansion and accepting résumés after the new year.”
Killian’s eyebrows rose nearly to his hairline. “Really? Wow…” This information all but sealed the deal for him. Of course he’d have to see numbers- salary, benefits, the price tag on the house Liam mentioned, but he couldn’t deny how well it all seemed to fit together and intersect perfectly with his own needs and desires.
“Since this is still on the down low, and the office is closed this week, I can give Nemo a call Wednesday or Thursday and tell him you’re interested.” Liam paused for a moment, his gaze on Killian intense. “If you’re interested, that is.”
Killian took a sip of his drink before replying. “Yes, I’m definitely interested.”
Liam’s relieved smile rivaled the lights on the tree as he stood. Killian stood as well, and the two men embraced warmly.
“This would be a dream come true, brother,” Liam said, patting him on the back before releasing him.
“It would,” Killian agreed. “I’ve missed you all.”
“We’ve missed you, too,” Liam said. “It’ll be so good to have you and Alice here in town and working in the same building.”
“It’s not a done deal yet, Liam,” Killian said laughing. “There’s still a lot up in the air about the entire situation.”
Liam scoffed and waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. “Pfft. It’ll work out. I can feel it in my bones.”
Killian smiled warmly and turned toward the stairs. “We’ll see. I hope so. Goodnight, brother. Merry Christmas.”
“Goodnight, Killian. Merry Christmas. Love you.”
“Love you, too.” Killian smiled and climbed the stairs to his room leaving a very happy Liam behind him.

please tell me about davy jones' cool son who he takes fishing
Davy Jones (after he was cursed) spent one night upon shore with an up and coming pirate woman.
After the rather “freaky” night, and the appropriate months; The baby Liam was born.
Of course it would be 10 years before Liam would see his father, growing up in a port city however he was told that his father would be returning on one of these ships, so the young Liam would rush to the dock to see if the man his mother described had returned home.
One night however, he did.
The thunder rolled overhead, lightning flashed and a knock was heard on the door.
There stood perhaps the most dangerous man many would pray never to see, and yet he was greeted with a loving kiss and warm embraces.
After a dinner in which Liam’s mother had prepared, Jones took Liam out for a walk in which they discussed many things, however the time was was gone before they realized it.
From that night to their next meeting, unfortunately Liam’s mother had passed due to an attack on her ship from an unseen foe from the depths.
And Liam had grown into a rather dashing young man.
The next time Jones had visited, Liam met him via rowboat, ensuring his father could go on land another time.
Jones and his son ventured into the seas on a vengeance trip.
They hunted the beast for weeks, and when they spotted it; spears flew from the deck to latch on, many of which were thrown by Liam.
(Epic battle description here)
When they returned to port, Beast in tow, they hoisted it up via pulley crane and had an artist commemorate the moment.

So last week I saw the UK/Int tour of Cats in Switzerland and oh. My. GOD. I have thoughts and I am going to share them right now! I have vaguely attempted to keep them organised by timeline/character but I scribbled these down at the intermission and on the bus back to my hotel as quickly as I could before I forgot anything (fully made myself travel sick but it was worth it).
Act 1
First thing I noticed was that Demeter, at the start, was so shy and skittish around the other Cats. I think they were definitely playing into the idea that she had just escaped Macavity and come home. The only one she was ok with right away was Bombalurina. They two were so sweet together – Bomba was always making sure she was ok. Dem got really into her role in the Gumbie trio and was having a great old time.
TumbleBailey got to ride on the flying trapeze during JSFJC and he was living his best life. The boy was not happy unless he was gymnastic-ing.
The lift that Munkustrap and Victoria did in ‘98 was done by Coricopat and Tantomile which I thought was fun! Always happy for my boy to get more screen time 💪
Side note: This is my third time seeing Cats, but because of Covid it was my first time getting to see the Cats all come in down the aisles at the start wearing the green goggles! I was in the front row, so I didn’t get the full effect, but it was still cool.
Tugger’s song was so much fun. Harrison Wilde was so energetic! During the number he came down off the stage into the audience (again the first time I got to see this!), and began twirling the security lady and dancing with her. 11/10. Bomba was SO PUT OUT when he said “no” and booped her away – like, she was raging, it was so funny. Munk was so annoyed the whole time. Peak big brother energy.
I got the impression almost right away that Jennyanydots is Cori and Tanto’s mum, they were interacting quite a lot and she was always looking after them. Ditto with Skimbleshanks and Jemima - he was definitely her dad - he was so protective of her when Grizabella showed up, it was adorable! I hadn’t considered that relationship before (despite my love of Skimbledad), so it was super fun.
This Misto does not like rice pudding, this is not a drill! The face he pulled during that line in Bustopher Jones was hilarious, he looked so disgusted. Misto was definitely more of an adult than he was in ‘98 or the Broadway Revival. Liam Mower is a bloody FANTASTIC dancer; I couldn’t take my eyes off him! He was clearly loving life and I appreciated every moment.
This production said Casslonzo RIGHTS and we love to see it. They kept on snuggling up to each other when they were in the background and you can bet your ass I noticed EVERY TIME. We stan a power couple of protectors. Alonzo’s actor Sebastian Goffin's voice was so deep and I was LIVING. Like I was not expecting this voice to come out of this man. Twas brilliant. Cassandra was so beautiful I nearly cried like ma’am PLEASE HAVE MERCY. She was definitely an obvious protector with how she was always looking out for the other Cats. Also during the first song she was lying right in front of me and I had to try so hard not to explode.
Old Deuteronomy was such a loving dad to everyone, he had such a warm vibe and energy and I just wanted to hug him! Like all of these Cats were his babies and he adored them all. He and Jerrie and Teazer had a wee “oh, you”/slightly nervous giggling moment when they had just come back on stage after getting busted in their number and it was excellent.
Cori and Tanto were definitely portrayed as younger than they were in ‘98. Cori in particular reminded me of Misto from ‘98; like an adult and everything, but a young one who still had a bit of kittenish energy. Their wigs were pleated up the sides which I thought was unique and cool, I don’t think I’ve seen Cats wigs like that before! Cori was so pissed when Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer ran under his and Tanto’s arms during the back-and-forth dialogue-y bit of the Jellicle Ball and interrupted them. He enjoyed hissing a lot which I can respect. Nothing but love for my hissy prince. I actually think Milan was covered by a swing on my night. There wasn’t anything saying so, but I don’t think it was Milan? Idk, it could’ve just been the lights or my position. Either way, loved her. This tour gave the twins so many characteristics unique to it and they will definitely affect my headcanons from now on.
RETURN OF THE SKIMBLETABLE.
Ok but every time Grizabella showed up, Munk genuinely looked like he wanted to/was about to cry, which I thought was an awesome bit of character work. I really got the impression that she was his mum, and she had abandoned him when she left the tribe. Russell Dickson was trying to make me feel things and he succeeded, I was so invested in his performance.
Also, during the ball, he was sitting just below Old Doots on his tyre who was patting his shoulders. A WHOLE DAD AND HIS BOY.
Jemima’s actress Lottie Stephens was also a fantastic dancer who was leaning just on the edge of cryptid and I loved it.
Plato spent a lot of time trying to look like a very distinguished boy and it was so cute. He definitely still had some kittenish moments though. He wass definitely learning to be a protector; every time there was a protector moment on stage he was there, just to the side or behind the others, looking nervous but wanting to make Munk and co. proud.
Act 2
OK OK OK Moments of Happiness? Not usually my favourite song of the show, but there were two excellent moments of personal happiness for me. First, Shakeel’s Cori slinked right over in front of my seat and I became even more unhinged than before, to the surprise of probably 0 people. But SECOND was omg, so Demeter and Munk were sitting a bit apart at the front of the stage and the atmosphere and chemistry between them was literally off the charts. Dem had become more comfy around most of the other Cats throughout Act 1, but here she was acting really nervous and shy. So the two of them locked eyes for a moment and it was EVERYTHING. Like I cannot describe in a human language what they made me feel at that moment but it was SO MANY. Dem almost immediately looked away all shy like, but Munk kept looking at her until the end of the song in the most softest beautiful way. Like omg the acting was SO GOOD and I’m still not normal about it. Like you could tell both of them really liked each other but were too nervous to do anything about it and inside I was screeching infinitely.
Jellylorum my Queen. Aimee Hodnett was actually mind blowing I was totally enraptured. Her expressions and vocals were outstanding. When Old Doots said to Gus “you could do it again” before Pekes and Polls her face was like ‘exsqueeze me sir what are you doing? Desist immediately!’ But then she got involved and it was great.
I really enjoyed that Gus and Munk shared the narration of Pekes and Polls. Gus’ actor Hal Fowler was so expressive and dramatic and everyone was loving it and laughing along with him, and Munk still got his stressed-theatre-director moment.
TumbleBailey was super put out when Gus had his “youths today” lines, like, he proper turned around, folded his arms, and sulked. He was a whole baby and it was precious. PounceBucketty looked a bit more maturely cowed (he was definitelythe big brother of the two), but Cori was actually DEVO’D. Like my boy was so hurt, he needed a big hug from Tanto before Skimble’s song started. Tbh my reaction to Shakeel’s acting throughout the show was practically feral. On the outside I was calm, but inside it was like Guy Fawkes Night, Christmas, and Hogmanay all rolled into one.
Both Cori and Jerrie seemed to be close pals with Tugger – Cori even got a Tugger hug at one point. Shakeel’s Cori is very cuddly and I love it with all my soul. He doesn’t seem to like Jerrie all that much though, which is hilarious to me as a dedicated Coricojerrie stan. Good thing enemies to lovers is a popular trope amirite 👀
Jerrie has so much respect for Skimble it was so sweet. He was really active all throughout his song, helping him out and pointing out when others weren’t doing what they should be (the irony) during the “hilarity and riot” lines. Top notch stuff. He was also the bottom step of the Skimblestairs at the end of the song.
He definitely has respect for Alonzo as well, he was always on his best behaviour when Lonz was nearby. I loved these little character relationship decisions SO MUCH, like you could tell the actors had put a lot of thought into their characters and that they truly cared about the show.
Bomba was in the background for parts of Skimbleshanks, but she started making flexing motions at the “weak or strong” line and Tugger was next to her ooh-ing and ahh-ing appropriately. It sparked so much joy y’all I love her forever.
SPEAKING OF BOMBA HYPE – Macavity. Omg the song slapped! Dem was super spooked, but Bomba? She was absolutely ripping the piss out of Macavity and I loved every second. Not a single facial expression missed, every one clearly read: oh, you think you’re hot stuff? You’ve got NOTHING YOU LOSER. She was so smirky and sassy, almost like she was challenging him to come and have a go.
Macavity Fight was A++ 5 gold stars stuff. Demeter has a moment when “Old Doots” comes back, and it was great how at first everyone was like, “girl wtf get a grip,” only to be like OMG MACAVITY when my Queen rips into him. Mac starts to drag Dem away and then Munk starts to batter him. The fight was super dramatic and gripping, and when Munk went down he went down HARD. But then we got this magical moment when the whole tribe was like “NOT TODAY SATAN” and started fighting back together, and I feel like this production made more out of this moment than others do. Of course it wrecked me, because I am weak. (Also the Cat standing over Munk and protecting him was my angel Cori so I was delighted by that.) After that, Dem and Munk said Demestrap supremacy and the image was so magical of them nuzzling in the light of the single lamp when everything else was dark, it was *chef's kiss*.
So like, I was never sure why I wasn’t the biggest fan of the new Quaxo look for this tour, but now I think it’s because it’s just a bit too different from the Mistoffelees costume? Like I know Jenny also has a really dramatic costume change, but that change happens on stage and we see her transform. But for Misto, this change happens off-stage and we don’t get to see it, so it just seems a bit less smooth of a transition. I know Mistoffelees is kinda like the stage persona of Quaxo, but I guess I prefer it when they’re clearly the same Cat. I presume this was intentional but, and you’re supposed to be like, omg is that really him? But idk, just not my personal fave.
Having said that, IT WAS STILL LITERALLY THE BEST PART OF THE SHOW FOR ME. Because I’m Misto trash so I guess it doesn’t matter. I really liked that they made it a Tugger solo again, I like that a bit better than the duet. Everyone was appropriately surprised and awed at the magic, but it obviously was not new information to Tugger, who was standing there like, “oh, haven’t you heard?”. And the only word for his expression when the dance solo started was adoration, it was so lovely how enamoured he was. And the slow lines when Tugger addresses Old D were so soft and loving and I die. So my hc for this production is that they were close friends up till this point (and Tugger is the only one who knew about the magic), and this is when Tugger realises, oh, I LIKE like him. May write a thing around this later because I am predictable and basic and easily pleased. Also Cass was so nervous about being Misto’s chosen assistant – she wasn’t even volunteering when he picked her! It was such a cute moment.
Then there was more Casslonzo lounging in the background when Grizzy showed up again. Ok so all throughout the show I was worried about Memory, because Jacinta White started really strong in Act 1, and she did again with her big solo and I was like, oh no this is going to fizzle where can it go from here? I have never been happier to be a fool and a jester. That woman has some set of pipes I was blown away. Think my jaw might have literally dropped.
The bows were fab, but especially TumbleBailey. He came out last as usual and did his flippy flips across the stage, but then he decided to do an extra backwards one, and I don't think it was planned as he nearly kicked Jacinta and Martin (Doots) in the face and they looked surprised. Either that or they're really good actors! Everyone was fine though, and they were laughing about it.
But yeah. So glad I splurged on my Swiss weekend and saw this show. Worth it.

Killian Jones was new to Storybrooke High School and Merlin was concerned.
He had recently moved from England to live with his brother. The town of Storybrooke had warmly welcomed Liam Jones a few months back, as he found a place by the docks, a job at the sheriff’s department and began to make friends and connections. They would do the same for his younger brother, that was the way of the small town.
Miss Mills spoke of Killian’s quiet intelligence in Science, Miss Bell spoke of his quiet excitement for Arts and Mr. Dakkar spoke of his quiet concentration in History. Emphasis on quiet.
“He knows the answer, I can see it in his eyes, but he doesn’t raise his hand,” Regina would complain. “I really don’t want to fail him for poor class participation.”
“You should see the way his hands just fly off the paper during a project,” Tina would dreamily recount, her eyes bright and smile ever-present. “And I can see where he’s taking this project, can see the final lines but,” Then she would sigh and her smile would drop, her eyes sad. “he never hands it in. I can’t grade him on something I don’t have.”
“I feel for those boys, Merlin,” Nemo would tell him, with compassionate eyes on the window outside. “Liam has been doing such a great job in making a life for himself and taking care of his brother on top of that. Killian is such a bright soul, you can tell he wants to learn, wants to do more but he’s afraid.” Nemo’s sigh was weary and sad, his desire to help the young boy clear in his eyes. “How is he in your class?”
More of the same, if Merlin was honest. He could tell Killian loved to read, had already read most of the books they talked about, but seemed more than happy to re-read them. Like in Regina’s classes, Merlin could see the desire to answer in his eyes, could see the disappointment in them when someone gave the wrong answer, could see his pride when one of his classmates got the answer right. Killian Jones wanted to learn, he wanted to do more.
When nothing improved a couple of months into the school year, Merlin decided to take matters into his own hands, in any way possible.
Maybe he just needed the right push.
Emma Nolan was Storybrooke’s sweetheart.
Daughter of the beloved sheriff and the esteemed Mayor, everyone knew her and had seen her grow up. She was confident, kind and hardworking. Her name was spoken often in praise in the faculty room, even when she almost blew up the science room in her haste to finish a project.
Maybe…
It would require cunning, cleverness. He would have to develop a foolproof plan. He looked at the seating chart, memorized it, and strategized. He was meticulous. He…
Well… he got rid of a desk.
Thankfully, Leroy didn’t ask many questions. He just grumbled the usual amount when Merlin asked him to help him move the desk to the faculty room - Mr. Hopper would appreciate the extra space for his files.
Now, he just needed the puzzle pieces to fall in their respective places.
As always, Killian entered the room first, his quiet footsteps almost inaudible as Merlin wrote the theme on the board. When he turned, he had sat down on the last table of the middle row, as usual. Most of the others had filled out the seats out front.
A minute before the bell, Belle French entered the room along with the others and sat along on one of the few free desks. Merlin had wondered if the clever book lover would have been a better match for Killian but he knew that what he needed was extrovertedness. However…
Predictably, Emma and Ruby Lucas were the last to arrive. Laughing and chatting as usual, they stopped when they noticed the lack of a free desk where they could sit together.
“Mr. Emrys, what happened to the desk that was here?” Emma asked with a frown.
“Yeah, where are we supposed to sit?” Ruby followed.
Fighting back a victorious grin, Merlin turned to them. “Oh, I’m afraid the desk got broken,” He saw Emma’s eyebrow rise as she looked at him and he wondered if she, somehow, knew. “But there are still available seats.”
Merlin looked around, as if he hadn’t memorized where everyone was known to sit. He first pointed to where Belle sat alone. “Ruby, you can sit with Belle, and Emma,” He then pointed to where Killian was decidedly avoiding eye contact. “you can sit with Killian.”
Maybe it’s not exactly responsible or ethical but he gives his students a written assignment, mainly so he can sit behind his desk and covertly observe his genius plan in action. He watches as Killian’s eyes glance over to Emma every now and then, and how hers find him in turn. Surprisingly, he notices how Ruby’s chair is slightly but determinedly turned to face Belle. Did he…?
---
It’s not instant, of course.
But Killian begins to raise his hand in class and Merlin sees the way Emma smiles encouragingly. Killian’s gaze stops being permanently glued to his desk. He starts answering questions and there is a distinct British murmur mixing with the other familiar voices.
“He actually answered a question today,” Regina reported back a month later. “And it was correct!”
“He’s handed out his projects every class this past month,” Tina exclaimed excitedly. “Mark my words, Merlin, he’ll be an artist.”
“He’s been sitting next to Miss Swan in classes,” Nemo astutely informs him. “He’s been more talkative and even her grades have improved. Do you have any clue as to what happened?”
Merlin sips his coffee, giving himself time to hide his self-congratulatory smile. “I think Killian found the right motivation, I’m glad to see he’s improved.”
But he should know that Nemo would be impossible to illude; that man had a way to see into one’s soul. Although, he didn’t confront or chastise him. Nemo simply smiled and nodded.
Merlin watched as Killian became more participative in class and as he became more confident. He often saw them sitting together at lunch, accompanied by Ruby and eventually Belle. He was told that they also sat together in other classes and that his participation improved.
Sometimes, he would run into Liam and he would hear the pride in his voice when he spoke of how his brother was becoming more himself. How, after years of living in foster care due to the courts’ mistaken assessment of Liam’s capacity to care for him, he was turning into the man Liam had hoped he would become. He wondered if Emma had done some magic spell on the young Jones or if she had simply given Killian the opportunity to become who he was always meant to become.
Merlin had become a teacher to help improve people’s lives. He was convinced it all started with something small, the flap of a butterfly’s wing. This was the proof he had been looking for.
Graduation arrived faster than he had expected and he sat with the other teachers as his students crossed the stage to get their diplomas. He was known to tear up every time the black caps filled the sky. But who could blame him?
He got lost in the sea of students and parents as everyone congratulated one another, made plans for the summer and after. He watched as Miss Bell squeaked in happiness at Miss Rose’s ballet scholarship. As Miss Mills looked on with reluctant pride as Mr Whale bragged about his acceptance to Harvard.
And then he caught the moment Mr Dakkar embraced the youngest Jones as Liam looked on with pride. A blur of blonde hair caught his attention as Emma stopped in front of him.
“Guess what?”
His smile was involuntary and indulgent at her bright excitement. “What news do you have for me, Miss Nolan?”
“First of all, you’re not my teacher anymore so just Emma from now on.” He grinned at her sass even as his chest pained at the further realization that he wouldn’t have this blonde tornado in his classes anymore. “Second, and most important, I got accepted to the police academy!”
There was no faking his happiness at this news. He had known almost from the beginning of knowing that she wanted to follow her father’s footsteps on a larger scale. Had mentioned time and again how she wanted to find criminals, not break up bar fights. He remembered the pride rising over the fear in her parent’s eyes when she had first made her wishes known when they met. He wasn’t at all surprised that she had achieved her goal.
“That’s fantastic, Emma! You should be proud!”
Her grin shone brighter if it was even possible, a veritable sun on a cloudy day. “I am! We’re going on a roadtrip to New York over the summer so we can get to know the area and then we’re officially moving there in August.”
“We?” Merlin’s smile was confused. “Are you parents moving too?” He hadn’t heard anything about the sheriff resigning.
“Oh, no.” There was a visible red glow to Emma’s cheeks as she looked away for a moment. “Killian got into college there too, we’re…uh, going to share an apartment.”
Merlin grinned widely and tried to contain his glee. “That’s very smart of you two, saving expenses and keeping something familiar in an unfamiliar world.”
Emma stammered but Merlin pretended not to hear it. “Exactly, that’s what I said!”
“Emma!”
Mary Margaret Nolan’s voice broke their conversation as they turned to where the Mayor stood next to David Nolan and the Joneses. They waved her over with happy smiles.
“Right,” Emma waved back before turning back to him, her expression back to normal. “We’re all going to Granny’s to celebrate but we’ll see you around town this summer, right?”
“Of course!”
“See you, Mr. Emrys.”
Merlin watched as Emma joined the group and he waved as they all left together, lost in conversation. From the corner of his eye, he saw Nemo approaching.
“Looks like your plan worked.” He smirked at his friend without turning his head. “I don’t know what you’re insinuating, Nemo.”
Nemo chuckled with his arms crossed at his chest. “He’s like a new person, Merlin, so confident and expressive. Whatever magic you did, it worked.”
Merlin turned to Nemo and placed a hand on his shoulder. “All he needed was the opportunity, it was all already there.”
Nemo nodded, his eyes shining with pride. “I’m eager to see what will happen next.”
“Me too, me too.”
During the summer, Merlin managed to share a meal with Emma and Killian once before he had to go to England to help a friend of his. He took note of how comfortable they were around each other and how, more often than not, they seemed to be on the same wavelength.
He may have also noticed the way Emma would look at Killian when he spoke, her perpetual smile brightening her face. Or the way Killian turned his body towards Emma when she spoke, nodding his head in agreement. Their future looked bright.
---
8 Years Later
Another year, another graduation.
His tears darkened the fabric of his suit but Merlin didn’t care. He didn’t think he would ever stop getting emotional whenever he clapped as loud as he could for the latest batch of graduates.
The usual wave of congratulations and pride flooded him as he observed the crowd. Parents, family and teachers all together to celebrate their achievements.
“Mr. Emrys!”
He turned at the call of his name to see a tall dark-haired man holding a blonde woman’s hand approaching him. It was almost shameful how long it took him to recognise them - no more gangly limbs and shy countenance, no more ponytails and round face.
“Emma! Killian!” Merlin grinned happily, holding out his arms to accept their greeting hugs. “I’m so glad to see you here!”
“Well,” Emma grinned. “My little brother is graduating, of course I was going to be here!”
“What she’s not telling you is that she was hoping he would fall or trip on stage so she could record it-” Killian was interrupted by a half-hearted smack to his arm by an eye-rolling Emma.
“Whatever, he knows I’m proud of him.”
“And I see you two have grown up,” Merlin gestures towards them, noting their joined hands. “How has New York been treating you?”
“It’s been…” There was no disguising the contented smile on Emma's face. “Great. I made detective.”
“That’s fantastic!”
“Brightest detective in New York City.” The pride in Killian’s face was blinding and Emma’s face grew redder.
“And Killian just made partner!” Her rushed tone didn’t hide the pride in her voice.
It was the younger Jones’ turn to be bashful.
“What sort of firm?” Merlin asked.
“Nautical engineering, it’s really no big deal.” Killian explained as he scratched behind his ear.
“Right, he always says that but you should see the ships they design.”
“Emma…”
Merlin’s cheeks hurt from the wide smile on his face. “I’m very happy to hear that!”
They shared a smile and then what looked like a silent conversation before Killian nodded and wrapped his arm around her waist. “Actually, Mr. Emrys,” Emma started, licking her lips nervously. “We were hoping to ask you something.”
Merlin nodded promptly. “Anything.”
“Well,” Killian cleared his throat and pulled her that little bit closer to him. “There was another reason we are in Storybrooke this summer.”
“We’re getting married.” Emma finished with a smile.
Merlin thought he wouldn’t be surprised. He knew it was bound to happen - had heard from Liam how well his brother was adjusting to New York and how Emma had been a big reason for it, had seen a million pictures of the couple from Mary Margaret to have deduced their closer connection and had seen David sharing a drink with a nervous Killian at Granny’s a few months ago.
He thought he wouldn’t be surprised but the gasp still escaped his lips. “When? Where?”
Emma laughed. “We, hmm, we wanted to give you the invitation personally.” She evaded the questions as Killian took an envelope from his coat pocket and handed it to him.
“It’s going to be a small affair,” Killian explained as Merlin opened the envelope and read the thick paper invitation inside. “Just family and close friends.”
“We know it’s in short notice,” Emma was right, the ceremony would be in a couple of days. “but we wanted to invite you in person because, well…”
It wasn’t often he saw Emma Nolan nervous. She had always been confident and sure but he guessed this was different from answering a wrong question in Math class.
“We heard that you officiated your friends’ wedding in England,'' Killian continued and Merlin could feel tears come up in his eyes. “So we were hoping you would officiate ours.”
Their smiles were hopeful and nervous and Merlin knew his answer even before they actually asked. “But me? W-Why?”
The couple shared a smile. “You brought us together, Mr. Emrys.” Killian shrugged.
“What?”
“Maybe that wasn’t your intention,” Emma explained. “But you sat us together. You knew that we would help each other and maybe you didn’t plan for us to move to New York together or get closer but,” She shrugged with a smile. “That’s what happened.”
“And we knew we wanted you to be a part of our special day,” Killian continued. “We probably wouldn’t be here today if not for you.”
“What do you say, Mr. Emrys?”
“I say,” Merlin tried to contain his emotions but really, it had been an emotional day already. “That if I’m going to pronounce you husband and wife, you have to start calling me Merlin.”
An emotional day, indeed. They teared up as they hugged each other. They didn’t give him too much notice but had he made any plans, he would gladly cancel. Luckily, he already had a suit.
---
Despite his secondary role in the ceremony, Merlin had the best seat in the place.
From where he stood, he could see every happy face in the crowd - some faces he recognised from town, others, he learned, had traveled from New York to watch their friends get married. He could see the beautiful turquoise decoration on the chairs and corsages. The happy tears in Mary Margaret’s face as she sat in the front row.
Apparently appointed as a tissue assistant, Belle sat next to the Mayor, her gold wedding band shining in the summer sun. Ruby stood to his left side, excited to perform her duties as maid of honor, her matching gold band complimenting her turquoise dress. He had heard from the titular Granny of how Belle and Ruby decided to elope - how they had sequestered herself and Moe French into their car under the guise of a furniture emergency and drove them to the court house. Granny tells him how she should have guessed what they would do by the fact that their children were wearing clothes that didn’t quite suit a trip to the mall.
Liam stood to his left in a matching turquoise tie, with a calm hand at Killian’s shoulder who had none of his brother’s calm. The younger Jones’ leg wouldn’t stop fidgeting and he was sure he had seen him “fix” his tie or hair at least a hundred times.
The ceremony had been set up at the lake near the Nolan’s farm. Aside from the dozen decorated white chairs, the only other piece of decoration was a flower arch happily supplied by “Game of Thorns”. Leo Nolan made his way down the aisle first, a scowl hiding his look of pride as he scattered blue and green petals on the grass. Every flick of his hand earned him a chuckle from his family and boyfriend. The wedding rings, he knew, were safely tucked into Leo’s coat pocket.
It was simple, peaceful, and beautiful. It was them.
From where he stood, Merlin watched as everyone turned to the farmhouse when the music began to play. He heard the gasp from the crowd as Emma made her way to the altar with her father by her side. He watched as Killian’s whole demeanor calmed when he set eyes on his bride and the way Belle had to replenish the tissue supply at Mary Margaret’s tears.
And Emma was a vision.
They had chosen the perfect day - the sun was bright and warm, the breeze from the covered area made the temperature bearable. The short train of the lace dress was stained brown from the walk in the forest but she didn’t seem to care. Her eyes were on Killian as she held her father’s arm with one hand and a turquoise bouquet on the other.
Later, Merlin wouldn’t be able to tell anyone what he had said - had memorized a speech full of meaningful words for the happy couple. All he remembered was the looks of love and pride and pure happiness in front of him. All he remembered was the way the two of them stuttered through their vows, words of devotion, promise and adoration. The way their hands shook as they placed the rings on their lover’s finger. The way they kissed like no one was watching under the loud whoops and clapping from the audience.
His tears weren’t only reserved for graduation day - Merlin wondered how many pictures of the ceremony had his crying face marring the background. The one he chose to frame for his living room wasn’t too bad but his red eyes went unnoticed in the face of such happy smiles.

ANOTHER AU!? I know what you're saying... Gwen, you're nuts. But not only are you absolutely right, I think this one might be my most ambitious one yet. As a young nerd, there were two groups. The Marvel fans and the DC fans. And while the rivalry certainly has calmed down a bit, I was almost always torn. So, earlier in the week, I decided to do the one thing that every fanfic writer has tried at least once.
A Marvel/DC crossover.
But unlike the typical realm merger, to put it in Mortal Kombat terms, this is a universe where both properties coexist. For example, picture a group of people walking to a Big Belly Burger while listening to Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. That's just a fraction. I have an ENTIRE starting cast as well.

Emma'd slept better that night than she usually did in new places, and when she made her way to the kitchen that morning, she was greeted by a kiss on the cheek and a "good morning, love" from Killian, as well as a pancake breakfast with him and his family. Afterwards they dove into last minute party preparations like decorations and getting the food ready, with his parents insisting Emma was a guest and didn't need to help, and Emma insisting that it was no big deal and she wasn't about to sit around and do nothing, and Brennan mumbling something about how if that's the case then opposites very clearly attract, as Killian had made a living off of doing just that.
Once the rest of the guests started to trickle in, Emma then began to mingle with them, Killian introducing her to many of his relatives, former teachers, and family friends. A lot of them seemed somewhat insufferable in their own way, but there were a few kinder people among them. Most of these ones, Emma made it her goal to remember- she'd always been pretty good with names and faces, so it wasn't too hard.
One of the first guests in attendance was "Granny" Lucas, a kindly widow who lived down the street. She apparently treated the neighborhood kids like her own grandkids, Killian mentioning how she'd let the kids play in her yard with trees to climb and dogs to run around with whenever they wanted. He mentioned as well how she'd bake them cookies and knit them scarves and blankets. To this day, from what Emma heard, Granny's backyard was the center of town for the neighborhood kids.
They spent quite a while talking with Uncle Nemo, who gave Killian more than his fair share of teasing about the "lovely young lady friend" he'd brought with him that day, and though he seemed a bit embarrassed by his remarks, Killian still looked fondly upon his uncle. They talked for a bit about Uncle Nemo's contracting company, Nautilus Home Improvements, and how excited Liam was to soon begin his apprenticeship there. Nemo also seemed very proud of Killian's art career, saying he'd be certain to head down to the Nolan Blanchard to see his art himself at some point.
Killian introduced Emma as well to his step-aunts, Ruel, Bell, and Astrid. Aunt Astrid brought a somewhat familiar face with her, her boyfriend Leroy. Emma quickly recognized him as the lead from the jazz band that'd played at the museum's benefit dinner, and realized that it was the family connection that had landed him that gig.
Perhaps the most memorable person Emma met was Killian's cousin, Rogers. Killian had told Emma in advance that people always said they looked alike, though Rogers was a few older and neither of the two could see the resemblance. However, when Emma met him, she marveled at the powers that be, and how they'd been gracious enough to grant such perfect looks to two fortunate people. Rogers did look a little bit older than Killian, though he attributed the gray streaks in his hair to the stress of being a single parent, but aside from that, they looked so similar it was almost uncanny. Emma was secretly a little glad when he left early to take his daughter to dance class, because his mere presence was, admittedly, a little confusing. Even afterward, Emma almost felt it easier to pretend he was just a weird dream that never happened, as it made things a lot less confusing for herself and everyone involved.
Sometime later, Liam introduced them both to a friend of his, a sweet young lady named Paige. Based on the side-glances and smiles Killian was giving Liam as they talked, Emma could tell that she was more than just a "friend" of Liam's- and if not, he was clearly hoping it'd head in that direction. She seemed impressed to meet a semi-famous artist, and when she mentioned having a great appreciation for the arts, Killian offered to give a personal tour of the museum should she ever come down that way, then not-so-subtly hinted that Liam was heading in that direction sometime soon and they might even consider going together. This, of course, was met by blushing and stuttering on both of the teens' parts, but neither of them seemed entirely upset by this suggestion.
"I don't see why you said this weekend would be unbearable," Emma whispered to Killian when they'd found themselves alone in the kitchen, savoring a moment together before joining the rest of the guests back outside, "it's not so bad so far."
"That's because you're here, Swan," Killian replied, "how could I be miserable with you by my side?"
Emma could feel her cheeks turn red and looked down at her shoes, wondering how Killian always knew exactly what to say to fluster her so much.
"Besides," Killian said, leaning against a kitchen counter, "my father is less critical of me when there's others around. Can't have anyone see how disappointed he is in me, now, can he?" "I'm sure he's not disappointed in you," Emma said, despite having heard quite a few statements otherwise from him in the brief time they'd spent together that morning, "and Liam and your step mom seem alright." "They're great people," Killian whispered, "but I never really knew them as family. I'm just beginning to connect with Liam, and you probably know my step mom about as well as I do by now."
"Then maybe get to know them," Emma suggested.
"It's harder than you'd think, love," Killian said, "the only thing we really share in common is my dad, and some days I wish we didn't."
Emma rubbed his shoulder to comfort him.
"Somedays I almost wonder if it'd be easier if I didn't have a family at all," he said.
"It's not," Emma replied, so quickly she hadn't realized she was saying it until she'd already said it.
"Great going, Emma," she thought, "what a way to comfort him- reminding him his life is so much better than yours and that he should just suck it up and deal with it? Is that what I just did? Maybe he won't notice."
But the look on his face made it evident that he knew her response was borne of personal experience.
"I'm so sorry," she said, "I didn't mean to…"
She was interrupted by his arms wrapping around her, cradling her in an unexpected hug.
"Here I am, complaining about my family," he whispered, "and you don't even have- gosh, Swan. I'm so sorry."
"It's alright," Emma said, shifting in his arms so she could return his embrace, "just because your pain is different from mine doesn't mean it doesn't still suck."
They looked up at each other, each reading something in each other's eyes, something that transcended words.
"Apology accepted, love," Killian said.
Emma smiled, so lost in him she forgot where she was- and so did he. They started to lean closer to each other, already holding each other tightly and trying very hard to remember why their lips weren't already back together– though they were already moving in that direction.
They were soon reminded why, however, by Killian's dad's voice.
"Killian James Jones!" Brennan said, in a tone equal parts shocked, appalled, and disappointed.
Killian and Emma quickly snapped back to reality, letting go of each other and stepping a few feet away from each other.
"Oh, uh," Killian said, "uh, hey, dad? Can I, uh, help you?"
"I was going to let you know we're about to cut the cake and raise a toast," his dad said, condescension building in his voice, "but I can see you've still found some excuse to let your little brother down and bail on him yet again. Had I known bringing your friend along would be so much of a distraction, I never would've invited her."
"I'm sorry," Emma said, her cheeks red for a different reason than usual, "I was, uh, upset about a family thing, and Killian was comforting me."
"And do you still need to be 'comforted?'" he asked, "or is my son free to rejoin with the rest of his family?"
"I'm good now," Emma said, needing comfort now more than ever, ashamed at embarrassing Killian in front of his father.
"Then feel free to join us, but remember," Brennan said, "Killian can do just fine at disappointing us on his own; he doesn't need some pretty blonde distraction to help him out with that."
"Yes, sir," Emma nodded, wanting to melt into her shoes and disappear.
"I would appreciate if you'd show Emma a little more respect than that," Killian said, interrupting her shame to defend her.
Emma and Brennan both looked at Killian, a little confused, though Brennan's confusion was tinted with disdain, and Emma's was tinted with awe.
"What was that?" Brennan asked.
"I don't mind that you don't respect me," Killian said, "I've gotten over the fact that no matter what I do, I'm always just the family disappointment. I'm okay with that. But I'd at least expect you to treat Emma with a little more dignity than that, seeing as it's not a high standard anyways. You can treat me like dirt all you want, but I draw the line at you treating Emma like that."
The awe on Emma's face didn't fade as she watched him defend her. He'd been shrinking back in front of his father so much that to see Killian stand up to him for her was impressive, remarkable- and attractive.
But the disdain on his dad's face didn't fade either.
"And I'll draw the line at you disrespecting me," Brennan said, "I thought I raised you to respect your parents, and not to be so rude to your host."
"I'd hardly say you raised me at all," Killian said, "seeing as I was raised to care about others."
Before the argument could get any more heated, Fiona walked in.
"Oh, there you guys are," she smiled, unaware of what had just been going on, "everyone's waiting outside."
"It'd be rude to keep them waiting," Brennan said.
As they followed his parents outside, Killian and Emma walked next to each other, though not quite close enough to be touching, not even on accident.
"I'm sorry," Killian whispered.
"Sorry?" Emma asked, "I was about to thank you for defending me."
"I wouldn't've needed to defend you if I hadn't brought you here in the first place," Killian said, "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay, babe," Emma said, "and I do appreciate you sticking up for me."
"All in a day's work, love," he said.
And despite how things had just gone so sour, Emma couldn't help but think to herself that, if him protecting her like that was all in a day's work, she wanted to spend every day she could by his side.

"Yesterday, 37 year old Liam Fredrick Jones was arrested at his father's farm just outside of Louisville. His wife and young daughter were tied up in the Barn, not to far away from the mutilated body of his father. Several more dead bodies and Farming Equipment stained in blood was found nearby and Jones was quickly arrested. As he was being detained he screamed out "Just you wait Grey, I'll be coming for ya soon"
