Aaliyah's "Try Again" single hits the airways becoming #1 on the Billboard Top 100 charts!

I normally always double check my dates before I post them and I noticed Wikipedia now says this was released March 21, 2000? Not sure who keeps changing dates. Glad I print screened my sources. Even Apple Music and YouKNowIGotSoul still say it was released February 22. *shrugs*

Also, let's entertain the fact the song came out March 21 instead.... Why would the soundtrack come out on the 14th? Before any single is released? Who does that? Usually, there is a single to ramp up the excitement of the album/soundtrack.

Anyhoo... What's your favorite thing about this music video?

I always thought it was cool that she had JET LI in it. This was like.. his first ever music video debut.. right? She could have done that video ANY way and told a different story in the video of a guy liking a girl and being nervous to ask her out ... but she went this route. They looked like they had so much fun in that video. I loved it!

Happy (belated) Blessed birthday to Keir Lamont Gist (born September 15, 1969), professionally known by his stage name KayGee, best known as a member of hip hop trio Naughty by Nature.

YouKnowIGotSoul: We do a lot to keep Aaliyah’s legacy alive. What do you guys remember most about working with her? Naughty by Nature (Kay Gee): She kept her family with her, her mother and her brother. She was one of those people where if you saw her, you just knew she was a star; it just came off like that. Even working with her, we were working with her in a small room in Battery Studios, with Renee (from Zhane). We were working on “Are You Ready” from the “Sunset Park” soundtrack. It was incredible. I just cherish the moment and I’m glad I had the chance to meet her and say I’ve known her and had the chance to work with her. There are some people you put on a pedestal and say you want to work with, and she’s one I’m glad I had the chance.

When he left, I wrote the lyrics, put it together, played it for Salaam and he loved it. He played the sample, I loved the sample, so he looped it up and left the studio, he had to go to New York.

Basically how that went down was Salaam found a sample and the sample as from a movie called “Doom” if I’m not mistaken. Talk about that song as well.ĬJ Hilton: We had a lot of fun making that record. YouKnowIGotSoul: You mentioned “soulful with a hip-hop flavor” and that’s the feeling I get from the first single “So Fresh”. Actually, he’s a pretty good friend of mine now so it worked well. It was a great combination for me and Salaam to work together. It was one of the greatest ideas because Salaam is a really soulful dude as well but he has this real hip-hop flavor to his music. Talk about how you originally linked up with him.ĬJ Hilton: Well when I came to RCA Records about a year and a half ago, Peter Edge which is the chairman of RCA thought it would be a great idea for me and Salaam to work together. YouKnowIGotSoul: You mentioned Salaam Remi and I know you’ve worked with him a bunch. It was a really, really, really cold time for me, but it was summer, so I felt like the only way I could get through this is to write about it. I’ll never forget, it was the 3rd of July, right before the 4th she left. I listened to the track for a day or two, and at that time my daughter’s mother had just left me. YouKnowIGotSoul: Talk about how the single “Cold Summer” was created.ĬJ Hilton: It pretty much started out with Salaam Remi sending me a track. We’re just promoting that record right now. We’re on the second single right now entitled “Cold Summer”. It’s very soulful but I’m 23 years old so it’s coming from a young person. We have some great material on there, it’s a really, really soulful album. We’re actually mixing and mastering right now. What’s the progress of it and what can we expect to find on there?ĬJ Hilton: Right now we’re pretty much 95% done on the album. YouKnowIGotSoul: Talk to me about the debut album you’re working on called “Cold Summer”.

I think that it’s important that people are introduced to the many different perspectives on how to deal and engage with this love thing because we’ve been so desensitized with a lot of the stuff that we hear in these fairytale type songs and what we see in this movies and shows. Also this book as well is definitely a representation, it’s actually a culmination of information that I’ve gathered so far in dealing with love.

My music is a direct reflection of my experiences, not necessarily verbatim, however the lessons that I’ve learned in those experiences is what I use as a motivation and an inspiration for the songs that I write and sing and perform. Musiq Soulchild: My music is a direct representation in essence, not autobiographical but in essence, of the lessons I’ve learned in my experiences in dealing with love. YouKnowIGotSoul: I read in another interview you did that this book talks about how your music was affected by love and relationships and also how your music affected others love and relationships. If you have advanced intentions on becoming a person who loves better or a better person to love, to give and receive love, then I pray that this book helps you.

It’s not just in the bedroom, it’s as a person who loves. Musiq Soulchild: “Love 143…According to Musiq” is a book about love and it’s intended to assist people in becoming better lovers. YouKnowIGotSoul: Your new book “143…Love According to Musiq” is out now. YouKnowIGotSoul caught up with Musiq prior to a recent performance in NYC and discussed the motivation behind the book, what he’s getting into next musically, his creative process through the years, and much more. The book will help him accomplish what he’s already been attempting to do with each song he creates change people’s lives for the better. That’s exactly what he did with his new book “143…Love According to Musiq”, a culmination of the information he’s gathered about love over the years. So who better who write a book on the topic of love than Musiq himself. Over the years, he’s made a name for himself by creating timeless love music that has surely guided many fans through their own relationships over the years. Through his career that has spanned over a decade, there hasn’t been much that Musiq Soulchild hasn’t accomplished.
