070 Shake - You Can’t Kill Me

NEW ALBUM FROM NORTH BERGEN’S LOVE-STRUCK COSMONAUT

Shake’s music reminds me of Michael Jackson (Thriller + Dangerous era) and Pink Floyd. Before you go running to listen, based off those descriptions, Shake doesn’t straight up sound like either of those pop music titans.

The production’s proclivity toward synths and dark moods is what recalls Floyd, while the sensitivity vs angst, solitude and fusion of various pop music styles is what feels not so much like Michael’s music but like something he would’ve produce for another artist had he ever decided to go Quincy Jones on us.

The latest album, You Can’t Kill Me, is as defiant as the title commands. But in the title is also the clue of mortality and endurance if not survival. Someone in a review wrote, if this is a love album, its only one insofar as love has caused Shake pain. I think there’s plenty of songs about joy and synergy on this record but for me, the true consistent thread, is how loud it feels to feel. This album magnifies feelings, from the desperate and addicted to the spiritual and blissful.

The lyrics are straight forward and still enlist a mystique, Shake’s singing slides in and out of auto-tune so often that I can’t tell the difference anymore. Something about that also reminds me of Floyd. Shake is a new-psychedelic evolution from early Floyd experiments. Experiments that occurred before the rise of Hip-Hop, electronic music, and later still, the Yeezus album and Kid Cudi in general. It’s moon music quite literally as Dani Moon is another name Shake goes by. 

You Can’t Kill Me is a loner’s record. Reflected in the absence of features. But the album constantly reaches for connection. To awaken feeling, or to keep it alive, hence the immortality of experience, which cannot be diminished by the quality of what one feels but is sustained by the very fact that one continues to feel.

I’ve been wanting to do a job-flop series, for like... a literal year. >w<  So ya’ll better bug me about finishing this.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep their origional colors, or make them all purplified, so I went w/ ‘main purple + secondary og colors... and that kinda represents the idea I had w/ how they work, so their Main job is switched to Anxiety, but their Secondary jobs are still the same, basically. (so Roman would still be the ego/passion, or like Patton’d still be emotional intellegence)

Remy thought that he didn’t deserve love, not after everything he’s done. But, when Emile walked through the door to room 127, Remy’s heart skipped an unexpected beat.

How could it not when the six-year old’s whole face lit up like a Christmas tree upon seeing him? 

“REMY!” Emile cried, his chocolate colored wings fluffing up as he pulled free from Anton’s grip and practically flew, his little wings flapping hard enough that he nearly did fly, across the hospital room towards his bed.

Remy barely had time to push himself upright, hiding a wince as his own newly grown wings unexpectedly spread out to balance him just as he caught the bundle of energy that was Emile, holding him close as the kid buried his head under Remy’s chin, his small arms wrapping around his neck in a grip tight enough that he doubted Anton would be able to pull Emile free even with a bribe of cartoons on the docket. 

Emile sighed, relaxing as Remy’s own blue-grey wings moved of their own accord to wrap around him in a protective shelter of feathers. “You’re okay.” He whispered.

Remy shakily inhaled, squeezing Emile tighter as his heart skipped another beat that he desperately hoped Anton didn’t notice on the monitors. It really wasn’t fair that those two words could send such a wave of–of he didn’t know what–Emile would probably call them warm fuzzies, through him. 

But then again, Remy had never had…well anyone really, who had been truly happy to see him before this kid had burst into his apocalyptic lifestyle with a cheerful smile and a friendship bracelet. 

“Course I’m okay, kid.” He whispered, running his fingers over the edge of one of Emile’s wings, checking them over to reassure himself that he wasn’t injured. 

Remy glanced up to Anton who hovered in the doorway, eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses. “I ain’t gonna go nowhere.” 

Because despite his best–worst?–intentions to keep himself distant from everyone and everything…he had grown rather attached to this little fluffy ball of sunshine.

Attached enough to risk his own life for the squirt without a second thought for himself or his morning coffee that was probably still splattered somewhere on the sidewalk eight blocks away.

Anton quirked the corner of his lips in a tiny smile, giving the barest of nods before he stepped outside, shutting the door behind him with a soft click. 

Acceptance. 

Emile pushed up onto his knees, grabbing Remy’s face in his small hands so he could look him directly in the eyes. “Promise?” He asked, bottom lip trembling.

His wings, still aching from how they’d burst from his back only hours earlier, flapped once. “I promise, squirt.”

Emile grinned that special smile he had to make the warm fuzzies flutter in Remy’s chest and pressed his forehead against his. “Good.” The tips of his small wings brushed Remy’s cheeks causing his heart to again spasm hard enough that the monitors screeched a warning.

How had he gotten so lucky? How had Emile ever known that he could take a washed up nobody and turn him into–

Well…he wasn’t sure yet…but Remy hoped he would be somebody Emile would always want to be around.

Roman sat alone in his room, staring down at the phone in his hand for a long time after the call had ended. His thoughts were churning in his mind like the spin cycle of a laundry machine. The talk with his parents, and especially his dad had been… Well, it had had to happen. But it wasn’t easy. They were understandably angry, and Roman wasn’t sure that things would ever go back to how they bad once been. But whatever happened, it had to be better than the five lonely years before, right?

He hoped so. He wasn’t sure he could take it otherwise.

Roman let out a long, shaky breath, and sat up straight at last. He had to give Patton his phone back.

He got to his feet, brushing at his eyes with his free hand. He smiled widely, walking to the door, and let his expression fall into something more neutral before he opened the door.

Patton was waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs, hovering on the landing. He looked up at the sound of Roman’s footsteps, and Roman smiled at him.

“I’ve got your phone,” he said as brightly as he could. Maybe too brightly. Whoops.

Patton said nothing; just waited for Roman to reach him, opened his arms, and pulled Roman into a hug.

Roman went still, then relaxed into the hug, letting his own arms come up around Patton. He smelled like laundry detergent and sugar.

“How’d it go?” Patton asked softly.

Roman sighed, a little shaky. “I talked to my dad,” he said.

“You did?”

“Yeah….”

Patton didn’t push for Roman to elaborate. His hug was warm, and safe, and comforting. Like he was fully willing to hold Roman up if that was he needed.

Roman hesitated for a long moment, then let his head rest on Patton’s shoulder. Patton just hugged him tighter.
