Why Zayn Malik is the walking embodiment of a Ravenclaw: a doctoral thesis

now if any of you know me you know that I would sell my soul for a quality written hp au, but one thing that’s been a constant for me when starting a fic is the question of whether or not the writer will categorize zayn as a ravenclaw or a slytherin (there’s no other option besides these two).  Well I’m here to hopefully end that century long debate and give it to you straight (not quick): zain javadd malik is UNQUESTIONABLY a ravenclaw.

ok, so like niall, I think a lot of people associate zayn with surface qualities and truth be told I don't blame them because unless you take the time to get to know who he is beyond the small talk in interviews and making sure liam didn't fall off the stage half the time, I can totally see why people put him in slytherin - stereo typically moody, mysterious, and loves to cause ruckus with louis.

HOWEVER, people need to look into the quietness and notice that he's not sitting there like a hufflepuff and taking what's being said as is, even though he does get talked over a lot, he's making sure that if he has something to say, it's because he's got everyone's opinions and a full picture of all arguments/facts before he's giving his witty two sense and that's even if he feels overly moved to express that ‘no, you're all wrong it's actually this’ or ‘well you've forgot about this pov’.  but make sure you know your place bc even if you directly talk to him about something he may not talk to you about it bc he's a reserved ravenclaw, not willing to openly talk like most social gryffindors or not so humble slytherins would.  It's rare that he's actually saying something to brag about himself or talk about himself because that's neither here nor there and most of the time he won't even speak up about the previously mentioned things bc as a true ravenclaw, he knows what’s right and he doesn't need to boast about it like a slytherin; he's confident enough in his own intelligence - sometimes misconstrued as ravenclaw arrogance!  but is it really? bc if you're right you're right. 

 let's also talk about his antics with louis (and the occasional harry - also see: VERY rare liam occurrences).  yes, using one's wit to their advantage is textbook slytherin, which is why zayn can share this trait, but also notice who's instigating the pranks (correct answer: louis) and how zayn would carry them out.  always calculated, always waiting to hear instructions fully instead of running full force ahead with it all bc 'you guys are fucking idiots if you think I'm going to do this and run the risk of getting caught - take the time to plan this shit out and make it worth while.  I'm not gonna half ass a prank, if they're gonna cry, they're gonna bawl.' 

how about his love for english?  a typical ravenclaw characteristic?  perhaps, but it's so important to see how he views the world through the wording and thoughts/philosophies of othersin order to influence his own being.  I’m dizzy on how much he speaks in interviews about how much he wants to go back to school and do a proper english degree, wanting to learn beyond the books he can buy on his own.  be careful though!  zayn will say what he thinks and believes no matter what!!!  so while he loves english and the words (such a shame he wasn’t allowed to speak more about urdu and his culture while in the band), and the books he reads, it's how he compartmentalizes that alongside his own beliefs and thoughts that makes his favouritism notable.  also slight note at how he values intelligence in others and seeks that out from there.  Need I use his quote on education: “one of the most important things you can have”.  I mean, that in itself should be enough for this post.

moving on to his confusing loyalty!  I've yet to see zayn categorized as a gryffindor or hufflepuff, but many overlook his soft nature and caring side - ziall anyone??  it's innate for him to be caring towards those he loves.  let's not forget that "zayn wears his heart on his sleeve" bc HE DOES!  as caring as a hufflepuff and as loyal as a gryffindor, but what sets him apart is his raging ability to cut off people or stop contact with them after a while because they've done him wrong (if they listened to him the first time or actually paid attention to what he said then they wouldn't be in this situation) and no, I'm not just referring to post 1D zayn mess.  and no, I do not agree with the statement that zayn can do no wrong - though as a ravenclaw he might disagree with you on that bc when he’s in his element he’s always right.  it's important to also note that sometimes he just needs a nudge, he hasn't forgotten about you, he's just bad at texting back - cue the on and off liam friendship post band break up.  It's clear when it comes to some old interviews that he cares about these people but let's not forget that he has a temper and can let that sometimes cloud his judgement.  now would be a good time to ask if anyone knows if he has a new manager yet after that fiasco.

can we back track a second on his need for personal space to think and caring nature because of it?  self proclaimed introvert, I think a lot of people misconstrue what they saw of him in the band as temperamental and stuck up, when in reality he was simply someone who enjoyed the banter with others until he needed to go away and rejuvenate by himself for a little bit (tbt toddler zayn who needed to play with his toys by himself for a while after being around too many people).  are there introverts in every house?  without a doubt, however they’re most commonly found in ravenclaw, specifically the core trait of needing to gather their barrings and recharge before going back to join in on the fun.  you see, unlike best mate slytherin louis, zayn mostly holds back his bitterness from the others, making sure that he doesn’t say anything that might hurt them too badly - something that I greatly attribute to him knowing when he needs to go away for a bit before getting annoyed.  those of you who know, know.  soft zayn hours are intense!  honing in on his own needs of space to establish a calm demeanor in order to give others the attention and care he thinks they AND THEIR THOUGHTS deserve (namely crinkly eyed leeyum).  you’ll know it when you see it: the chin hook hugs, back rubs, and closed mouth smiles scream ‘I appreciate you and am here in the moment’.  it’s here where he shares a lot of caring (even if he mistakes what’s going on as something he actually needs to be concerned about but better safe than sorry!), nurturing traits with hufflepuffs.  having this social awareness also allows for him to clock important info that others might think he’s overlooking by not speaking - a ravenclaw?  as if.

speaking of personal space, we got a glimpse into his house from TIU documentary, but his solo interviews have given us a chance to read (and if we’re lucky, see) how he transforms his houses into his own sanctuary.  now, each house can debate on their own about the purpose of their common room to instill an element of comfort and while no, zayn doesn’t publicly have a library or reading nook like a typical ravenclaw might have, I think a PERSONAL ART/GRAFFITI ROOM SUFFICES.  we’ll get to his art later, trust me.  there are other spaces documented too though: his pirate theme shed in the backyard, tepee, room made up of entirely collaged walls in his old LA house, and let’s not forget about how strongly he felt towards the old tour bus that he felt compelled to get a tattoo reminder (#zouis).  his need to make a sanctuary out of any space he inhabits for longer than a week confirms how important individual comfort is to him and again, how in touch with this he is (I see a good debate here on whether or not this could be a hufflepuff trait as well).  little boy from bradford who’s smashing it buying his Mum and family a house??  wants them to have that comfort too!!!  the “gift” was also probably one of his most humble moments ever documented, so let’s not forget he’s a lil humble ravenclaw

and what would a zayn ravenclaw analysis be without picasso!zayn?  ravenclaw's are not only intelligent - please note that I didn't use the word smart bc there IS a difference to them - but they're also creative, both in the conventional and unconventional sense.  Of course we know of zayn's killer high notes (ask if me if I'm over the high note in If I Got You. hint: I'm not) and drawing abilities (zayn, will you draw a picture of me?  no, I don't liek you) but it's the passion and WHAT IT IS that he's singing and drawing that matters.  yes, comics, album sticker packs, very bland 'A' for a certain band member - but note the enthusiasm and NEED to talk about ‘who Harry?  tell them WHO drew that A tattoo for you!’  ‘you, it was you zayn.’  SMUG AF SMILE and tell me what other topic zayn talks about with that much enthusiasm and outspokenness other than liam payne.  there are many instances however where someone (usually brother niall) needs to coax him out to actually display this individualistic personality and I’m not gonna hide the link in the underlines this time because it’s SO IMPORTANT to watch this video of him wanting to sing drake (note the complete opposite genre of their published music) but nervous on getting lost in himself bc ‘don’t start something if you don’t want me to finish it’ and Niall knows this.  liam knows this the most, but niall’s outward with it and literally has to softly start siNGING IN ORDER FOR ZAYN TO KNOW ‘YOU’RE NOT IN THIS ALONE AND OTHERS WILL APPRECIATE WHAT YOU CARE ABOUT TOO, LOOK LIAM WILL EVEN BEATBOX FOR YOU’. EXTREMELY CONFIDENT IN HIS ELEMENT.  don’t mistake that for 24/7 slytherin confidence. in fact, pause.  ravenclaw’s when in their element will have surging confidence and might boast to the level of slytherin’s but they’ll wait for the right moment to show you up and pay attention because when they do they can get very competitive. was him getting a tattoo first out of the band at age 16 something worth overlooking?  absolutely not!  by now I’ll personally hand deliver you an award if you can give me an accurate count of his ink, but hello???  is this artistry?  duh.  is this him saying what’s important to him in art form?  warmer.  are these passionate things he cares about but sometimes won’t find necessary to speak about out loud?  on fire!  another shameless you-must-look-at-this-post link HERE of me talking to him about his art in the midst of 5,000 screaming girls who all wanted to talk about his looks.  LOOK.  AT.  HIS.  APPRECIATION!  WHO HE IS AND OTHERS RECOGNIZING THAT BASED ON HOW HE PROJECTS HIMSELF IS SO IMPORTANT TO ZAYNIE.  Look, if zayn’s not authentic to himself or exuding individuality then even he would tell you that he’s failing himself.  we can see this also in his fashion choices (there have been a few questionable moments, but over all, ace outfits).  nowadays harry tends to get a lot more in your face fashion press, but do I need to pull out receipts on how many best dressed lists zayn has been on SOLELY because he thinks outside the box and doesn’t give a fuck?  listen to me when I say that ravenclaw’s will die without originality/individuality and the ability to take control of theirs

perfect segue to his exit of the band.  was it bc of mental health issues, I mean yeah, he’s written such, but were those spurred on bc he didn’t have his space to be an individual and do his own thing?  obviously.  and before anyone says anything about him taking control of his future being an ‘I don’t take bs and will stand up for it’ decision as a slytherin trait, let me remind you how long it took him to actually do it.  imo a slytherin would have stood up from the start if they were that unhappy about it.  again, he looked at things from all angles for a long enough time to be able to understand what was going on before doing something he’d regret. sadly if it did affect his mental health that much maybe he took a little too long in making the decision but ‘we do it all for the fans’ and while I appreciated that, I also appreciated him writing an entire song about wanting to take off clothes and the love of being pushed up against the wall soooooooooooo.  his songwriting skills: they're definitely getting there, but the amount of songs (TWENTY SEVEN) he felt he NEEDED to put on Icarus Falls because he didn't want to just let those stories NOT be told, it was IMPERATIVE that people hear those thoughts stuck in his head.  unfortunately his tongue got the best of him - as it does for most ravenclaws! - and his passion did not catch up with his patience, so now many won't even get my previous IIGY high note reference bc of the sales flop that was Z2 - something spurred on by him calling out the record label for not letting him release it.  can they be blamed though, because zayn, again, the ravenclaw poster boy, allegedly doesn't want to do promo for his music because to him it's not about the sales, instead, the music. should. speak. for. itself!  ‘if 10 people listen, cool. if 10 million people listen, also cool, but I'd rather 10 people ACTUALLY LISTEN and appreciate the art versus 10 million people listening bc I look good in an interview’ and if that doesn't say artistic ravenclaw passion, idk what does

Chala Vahi Des (Preface from 2017 for a book I've barely started)

I wrote the following piece a year ago with a plan for a photobook with various poems and short stories to accompany the photos. Many things have changed since then, like my mind about whether this should still be a photobook or should instead just be a novel or memoir, and, despite the title of my blog, I have yet to make that much progress on it. I figured that if I make some of the completed portions public to allow free-flowing criticism or comments, then maybe I'd be more motivated and directed towards creating something that makes remote sense. So the excerpt contained within this post starts from the beginning with a preface of the book. Some initial parts of this preface may be provocative, and if you happen to be outraged by my first two paragraphs, I implore you to just continue and finish it, because it's likely you won't by the end of it. ​2017 has been a year of mishaps. And despite the Trump-era chaos that embodies 2017, it’s not the reason for my dissatisfaction with the year, it’s just a supplement. More than anything, 2017 has been a year of losing some friends and even more battles. A year of bad days and even worse grades. A year of people whom I thought might not ever leave, leaving. A year of sitting and watching as one lived their dreams out in Madrid, another preparing to spend the summer in London, another in India, and DC, and lots and lots in California, and so on. And after watching all this, I'm still in Texas. Texas has been a trap. I've felt stuck, enclosed, like I should be somewhere other than this state. It's like a star dies every time you try to positively represent a state that hits the fan at least once a day. You put a smile on your face ready to go to class and breathe the fresh Texan air around you and then you find out your friend's been arrested for possession of marijuana. He’s facing jail time, contributing to Texas’s shiny “7th highest incarceration rate in the country” honor. A star falls. You lift your head up again, though, trying to take on the next day. Now your friend's pregnant. Just another statistic that puts Texas at #3 on the teen pregnancy rate ranking. A star falls. Move on, keep going. You made it to Social Problems class for once. The topic of the day is child marriage, and you learn that Texas has not yet banned child brides. Another star falls. Well, it can only get worse. And it does when your local public health official couldn't save a mother from dying while delivering her baby. Texas has now become the state whose 3 largest cities are among the top 4 cities with the highest uninsured population, and the maternal mortality rate is 30 per 100,000 births. And you can't do anything about it. I looked these all up, obviously, to feed the already-growing animosity I had towards Texas. I've been finding myself in dilemma after dilemma. Stuck in a state where my gay friends are denied service at restaurants. In a state where seeking women's health services means enduring lines of berating, threatening protestors. In a state where guns are second to Jesus and affordable health care is the spawn of Satan. In a state where Terry Jones is considered a freedom fighter and Malcolm X a terrorist. In a state where refugee labor runs the economy yet it's the first of 50 to deny refugee entry. In a state where mosque burnings are frequent and Qur’an burnings even more frequent. In a state where, because I’m Pakistani, I’m not good for anything if it’s not giving someone surgery or fixing their computer or enduring hate crimes as a gas station clerk. I’ve found myself in the dilemma of wanting to leave. Wanting to venture far out from the remote thought of Texas. Seattle, Portland, Santa Barbara, somewhere with coasts where your feet don’t get tangled in algae every 3 seconds and festivals where you burn 40-feet wooden statues instead of religious sites. Wanting to join my lost friends to all their aforementioned locations, where people that look like me and talk like me can be expected to be the first them the world had seen instead of what their parents’ friends would make of them. ​But I couldn’t. I’d had three years. I went to California but came back. I went to Canada but came back. To Boston. DC. Spain. I could have made myself disappear in any of those places but I came back for something more than the fact that I could provide for myself here, or be provided for by my parents. Being stuck sucks because once you escape you feel uncomfortable, unaware, scared. But being stuck also feels great, because it forces you to make what you can of your resources. It’s not a feeling of homeliness vs. unhomeliness; it’s something bigger. There must have been something I enjoyed about myself in Texas. And I found it being stuck here in the year of mishaps. For every burnt mosque I found, I found a Jewish temple willing to rebuild it. For every Qur’an a zealous pastor tried to burn there was a hero on a skateboard who snatched it from the fire. I found my joy in the South Asian enclaves of DFW and Houston and, yes, surprisingly, Amarillo, where I’ve tasted some of the best chicken karahi and chicken tikka and fried paneer of my life. I found my joy in a dorm room where a Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Sudanese, Iraqi, Saudi, Palestinian, Jewish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Mexican and American group of friends set aside their differences because that’s what they’ve had to do their entire lives to make friends. I found joy in the rolling hills and the red canyons and the greenbelts and the blue holes and the cornfields and the wind farms and the riverbeds of this prolific state. I found joy in the fact that being one of the only kids of Pakistani descent in my school only meant being one of the first to do something spectacular for those that came before and those who will come after. And I, surprisingly enough, found lots of joy in Texas blue grass music. Studying literature, I became fascinated with the concept of identity, namely that of diasporic identity. And I missed a major aspect of diasporic identity when it finally came to me determining my own. An identity is one that the identity-seeker creates and the heritage embraces, and vice versa. In other words, I had to accept my identity internally as well as in accordance with my surroundings. All my surroundings. That is what I failed to do since I became sentient. I am American; my country claimed me as its citizen. I am Pakistani, my parents made sure to pass that heritage down to me as I grew up. But almost always, I am only one of those at a time. Other times, I am neither. Rarely was I ever both. In America people ask, “So what are you? Where are you from?” In America, I am presumably not American. I’m Pakistani. But my Urdu has become broken, my knowledge of Pakistani politics has almost zero value, when I go to my parents’ homeland I’m told not to talk to people because they’ll know I’m American. Because when I’m in Pakistan, I’m American. But I’m not both at the same time until I meet other people who experience the same thing. So I’ve come to terms with making that part of my psyche flexible. Some parts of my identity I’ve claimed, but they haven’t claimed me, and vice versa. But by being stuck here yet finding that joy in things, I’ve found that reciprocity in Texas. I am a Pakistani-American Texan. I bask in chicken tikka and American patriotism and southern hospitality all at once. I find solace in the red-pink sunsets across the Amarillo sky, relaxation in the swims in the Barton Creek greenbelt, excitement in SXSW and ACL and all the other musical acts Austin offers, meditation in the 6000-foot deep Palo Duro Canyon, reflection in the icy grasps of Texas’s historic blizzards and the chokehold of its historic floods and the sweaty embrace of its heatwaves. I find inspiration in the ones that get out and give back—in Beyoncé, in Cary Fagan, in Hakeem Olajuwon, in Wes Anderson, in Rick Husband, in Matthew McConaughey, and so many more. I can attribute Texas's setbacks to the many negative experiences I've had my entire life: bullying, Islamophobia, drought, isolation. Yet it would be wrong to discredit the places and people in Texas that have put a genuine smile across my face the past 18 years. I find being Texan to be a challenge every day, but I find that every day I complete that challenge it brings me closer to claiming the place as my own. Every day I mourn a fallen star for every time a Texan or a group of Texans screws something up, but every day I also find a Texan or group of Texans who have stayed long enough to pick up those fallen stars. And that’s the Texan I’ve become. Not one who turns their face away from a dire situation just to be free from Texas’s setbacks, but one who stays long enough to fix those setbacks and free Texas of dire situations. “Chala Vahi Des” is a song by a group of musicians who met in Rajasthan, India to record an album called Junun. The album featured Urdu, Hindi, Hebrew and English singers, who sought to turn the borders that were being fought over in Rajasthan into a place for ghazal, the “poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain." “Chala Vahi Des” literally means “let’s go to that country,” and I found it fit to use such a phrase as the title of this book to invite others into my personal Texan heritage, which spans much broader than state politics and rodeos and southern accents. This book is meant to acknowledge Texas’s fallen stars, celebrate the reignited ones, and illuminate entirely new ones as we progress. It’s somewhat sad and realistic to say that I’ll eventually leave Texas, but before I depart I hope to go so far as encapsulate the glamorous yet rigorous upbringing that I and many others have had for the past 20, 30, 40-something years of our lives here. -Ali Haider Fort Worth, TX

Summary: You had been working with SHIELD for a while and had developed feelings for Bucky. One day as you’re heading downstairs, you hear him say something to Steve that catches your attention.

You walked into Stark Towers completely shocked at all the events that had happened so far that week. You had gotten into an argument with your friend and accidentally hurt 28 people by almost cooking them alive like lobsters. You could manipulate water, and had caused a river nearby to become very hot and start boiling in the middle of the argument. Whoever was swimming in the river on that hot summer day was instantly burned. An agency that went by the name of SHIELD had found you later that week and somehow knew of your powers. Later that day, they had transferred you to live here, at Stark Towers, for a while wanting you to join their agency, since they saw you as an asset.

You marveled at the size of just the entrance alone. You looked up to see so many upper levels that you couldn’t even count them all. It was while you were trying to count all the levels with your bags still in your hands as you continued walking that you had bumped into someone.

“Hey,” you looked up into his beautiful icy blue eyes and knew you were screwed. He was definitely going to be someone you had feelings for. “Sorry. I’m such a clutz, and I’m new to this whole superhero thing.”

You motioned to your surroundings.

“Well, sorry to disappoint, doll, but I’m not a superhero,” the mysterious man muttered.

“What are you then? A supervillain?” you joked.

“No, I’m somewhere in between.” He looked at your expression, which was completely fascinated. It was apparent that this man would for sure be your next crush.

“I’m James Barnes, but everyone calls me Bucky,” Bucky lightened up suddenly realizing he never introduced himself. He held out his right hand for you to shake.

“Y/N,” you said taking his hand and once again staring at his magnificent eyes. He began smiling, and you almost forgot about his eyes for his smile was so mesmerizing.  You looked down and you were still shaking his hand after an awkward amount of time mainly filled with you staring at him had passed.

“Sorry,” you muttered taking your hand away and wiping it on the side of your pants nervously.

“It’s fine, but I have to go get ready for a mission,” Bucky explained starting to walk away.

“Okay, see you later,” you waved. God, I’m such an idiot. I completely blew it!

Later on that day, you went to the training room to work off some steam. You were still mad about your interaction with Bucky from earlier. You had met everyone else briefly, and Tony showed you around his building. It was a labyrinth, and you were surprised that you were able to find the training room.

You plopped your bag down near the bench, and walked around the room to try and figure out what you wanted to do. There were dummies for you to practice your fighting skills on as well as punching bags. There were also an endless amount of weights in the corner. There were a couple brightly colored yoga balls in another corner, which your inner child wanted to run over to and start bouncing on.  However, most of the room was taken up with big machines like treadmills and ellipticals. There were also multiple tvs in the room with different channels playing that you could watch while working out. You had brought your phone with some music already on it and decided to stick to that. You walked over to the punching bag trying to size it up. In all honesty, you had never really trained for anything that much and figured you would just try to take out your aggression on the punching bag. Your wrapped your hands up trying to protect them and walked over to the bag.

You heard the door open and looked up, irritated that someone had interrupted what was going to be a very therapeutic workout. Of course the person was none other than Bucky Barnes, the very man who was able to make you flustered by just looking at him, came in right as you had begun to focus.

“Hey!” he waved at you and smiled. His smile made any irritation you had had earlier dissipate. “I just came to workout before the mission.”

“Hey. Sorry about earlier. I’ve just had an insane week,” you tried to explain. You looked at what he was wearing. He had on a pair of black workout shorts, which showed off his toned legs nicely. You brought your eyes up to his chest. He was wearing a gray t-shirt. You looked at his left arm and realized it was different than his right arm. His left arm was made of a silver metal. The metallic plates cascaded down his arm beautifully. Towards the top of his arm facing outwards, there was a red star that contrasted heavily against the silver background. His right arm in comparison was fleshy and normal, yet muscular. Bucky saw you staring at his left arm, and looked to you trying to figure out what was going through your mind. His face dropped as he had decided it was nothing good. Bucky cleared his throat embarrassed of your staring.

“Sorry. I usually wear long sleeve shirts to cover it up, but since I’m working out–” Bucky began.

“Why would you want to cover it up?” you questioned interrupting him. “It’s beautiful. I mean, ummm, it’s constructed very well, and it looks nice on you. I mean–” you became flustered realizing what you had said and tried to fix it.

“Thanks,” Bucky said blushing. “Most people don’t view it that way. Most people get scared or intimidated by it.”

“Well, I don’t know why. It suits you, and I really like it.”

You turned your attention back to the punching bag not realizing that Bucky was once again blushing. You began hitting it with all your might as Bucky walked over to the weights.

After that day, you and Bucky had become extremely close. He was your best friend and had been there for you through everything. However, you never told him how you truly felt about him, because you didn’t want to ruin the relationship you had now. You had also grown close to Steve, since Bucky was always hanging out with him and you were usually around Bucky.

You were heading downstairs to eat some breakfast before training, and you heard two voices talking. You stopped in your tracks, but quickly recognized the voices as Steve and Bucky. You began to walk down the stairs again until you heard your name. Once again, you stopped and stood hidden from their view. You leaned a little closer as quietly as you could to hear the conversation a little better.

“I really like her, Steve,” you heard Bucky admit.

“Yeah. She is really nice. She’s always willing to help whether it’s around the house or on a mission,” Steve mentioned.

“No. I don’t like her as a friend. I like her as something more. I want to ask her out, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship if she doesn’t feel the same,” Bucky said.

“Trust me, Buck,” Steve began. “She likes you in a romantic way too.”

You began blushing and turned dramatically towards Steve’s direction, still remaining hidden, causing the floor to creak. Both Bucky and Steve looked in your direction, but quickly began talking again after assuming no one was there. They must not have seen me. How the fuck did Steve know I liked Bucky?

“How do you know?” Bucky asked reading your mind.

“Dude!” Steve playfully hit Bucky on the arm. “Have you not seen how she looks at you or how when you compliment her she gets all flustered and starts blushing. Also, I could tell you both like each other, because of how much you hang around each other.”

Damn. Am I that obvious? Well, at least I know Bucky likes me too. You smiled confidently realizing this and began once again walking down the stairs not trying to hide your smile. A wave of confidence washed over you. The man you had liked since you first met liked you back. It was a good feeling to have. Nothing could bring you down.

“We hang out a lot,” Bucky said gesturing to him and then to Steve right as you reached the bottom of the staircase. You made sure your feet hit the hardwood floor harder than normal, so they heard you come in.

“Good morning,” you smiled flirtatiously towards Bucky.

“With us, it’s not the same,” Steve whispered to Bucky as you turned away from them to get cereal.

“Good morning” Steve said cheerily. “What’s got you so happy?”

You were never a morning person.

“Oh, I don’t know. It’s just a good day, I guess,” you replied.

“Do you think she heard us earlier?” Bucky whispered to Steve as you were grabbing a banana.

“You guys know I can hear you, right?” you turned around with a smirk on your face. “So why don’t you just ask me?”

You went to get the milk, but you made sure to make enough eye contact with Bucky to where he looked away blushing multiple times. It’s nice to see him being the obvious one and not me.

“Okay,” Bucky finally said as you were pouring the milk in your cereal. “Did you hear me and Steve talking earlier?”

“Yes,” you said bluntly looking up. Bucky’s eyes widened a little. He looked at Steve nervously then back at you.

“How much of it did you hear?” Bucky asked nervously. You could see him messing with one of the metallic plates on his left hand.

“Enough,” you replied smugly.

You grabbed your cereal and banana and began to head upstairs before Bucky could say anything else. You didn’t want Bucky to admit his feelings for you or vice versa while Steve was in the room. Although you and Steve were close, it was a private moment that should only be shared between you and Bucky. You knew he would find you later, most likely while in the training room, since you two always worked out together.

“Jeez, maybe you’re the obvious one,” Steve looked at Bucky, who was still messing with his silver hand, and began laughing. Bucky’s cheeks were a shade of dark pink.

CLS Hindi Acceptance! and Advice

I’ve had an exciting week! I just found out I received the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship for Hindi. That means I will spend this summer in Jaipur, India studying the language for about 20 hours a week while doing various cultural activities in between. Find out more about the CLS program here. Though I haven’t done much for the program aside from getting accepted, I really recommend the experience for any American langblrs out there. I’ve seen that langblr/Tumblr is really lacking some CLS information, so I want to relay some things that I’ve learned so far plus a little bit of advice for getting the scholarship, based on my experience.  

Use all the resources available to you.

The CLS website is really great because they have names of previous participants, your campus advisors for every language at your university, webinars and so much more. Take a weekend to sit down and survey all the advice that CLS itself offers: most of what I’ve learned I’ve taken directly from what they’ve told applicants to do. The CLS application process is, in my view, extremely straightforward: they’re not trying to trick or weed out applicants for any weird reason, they want who they say they want on the website - passionate, interesting college students who will work hard to learn a language. If you can give that impression in your application, you’re golden.

Outside of CLS, gradcafe forums, some older Tumblr/Reddit posts, and Youtube all helped me get an idea of what the program is like. Likewise, an hour of googling can give you some more specific nuggets of information to include in your application.

ALSO on-campus resources at your college will likewise be super helpful to you. I visited my college’s Writing Center I think 4-5 times to draft and revise my essays, and I’m so glad I did. Ask around, and find study abroad officers, alums, and CLS advisors at your school to help you prepare for your application, and hopefully, your time abroad!

Don’t let Imposter Syndrome stop you: This program isn’t just for foreign language majors or people from “prestigious” colleges.

CLS goes through extensive lengths to recruit applicants from a variety of colleges, experiences, and majors. Finalists come from community colleges and the Ivy league, and language majors are far from the only participants. CLS just wants to see you make a unique case that your experience and your field of study will benefit from the scholarship: do some research on the country/ies that speak your target language and find connections between that and your academic career.  

Make your application specific and construct a timeline.

To be blunt, CLS is already aware of the fact that 1 billion people speak Chinese/K-Pop is gaining global musical influence/Farsi is an important language due to historical Iran-America relations. Not only that, the readers for the program have likely been told these very general factoids in thousands of application essays. My advice is to save that space in your essays and give the readers a few tangible and vivid details of your relationship to that language. It goes without saying that you think more people should speak your target language because that’s the entire purpose of CLS. Also, if you speak/use other languages in your daily life make a really interesting connection between the two! For example, I previously was an exchange student to Croatia, so I discussed my interest in the religion and politics behind the Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian and Hindi/Urdu linguistic divides. Write essays that give the readers a good idea of who you are, and try to stay away from bland and well-known facts about CLS and your language.

Another thing that really helped my application was that my advisor told me to draw out a timeline for my future as I see it now. With those long-term goals of mine, I wrote how Hindi and India fit into my life, and featured those connections in my essays.

Also write to impart some sense of urgency upon the reader: why CLS now? When you give the impression that your goals are detailed and realistic, your application will be so much better!

Talk about what you’re doing now.

CLS wants to see a demonstrated commitment to the goal of acquiring and using your target language, in whatever unique way you’ve gone about that. Be creative! If you have a langblr for your target language, talk about it! Write how you’ve made vocabulary lists and answered writing prompts in your language. In my essays, I wrote about how I couldn’t take Hindi classes at my college due to a schedule conflict, so I arranged to audit lessons instead. I’ve heard of people starting study groups, conversational coffee hours, and tutoring programs, in addition to things like dance and martial arts lessons, calligraphy, and so much more.

Choose your language first, not the program.

Sidenote: while CLS is amazing in that it fully funds all travel, room/board, and academic expenses for every student, I’ve come across people online trying to “game” the program by trying to strategically choose less common languages that receive fewer applications to the program. CLS offers about 16 languages, and from my experience the bigger programs are Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. So for example, a student may really want to get into CLS in general, and despite their having five years study of Russian, they may choose, say, the Azeri program because it receives fewer applications. As a very competitive and generous program, I seen people prioritize getting accepted over any consideration of the actual language they will be spending months studying.

So the first problem with this approach is that a) we don’t know the exact distribution of applications for a given language for any given year, and b)  CLS compensates for the fewer applications of these less-spoken/studied languages by offering fewer spots. So the low amount of information applicants receive means that practically you should choose the language you would do the best studying over any sort of strategy to get into CLS in the first place.

Secondly, your application will likely be stronger if you choose the language you are most passionate about and connects best to your future career.
