writing characters talking in arabic when you're not arab 101

When I read DC fanfics that include arab characters or characters that speak arabic in general, i don't want to go nitpick in the comments because the fics themselves tend to be very entertaining and i don't want to discourage the writers, but there are you know.. common mistakes.

this is a post that goes over the basic general mistakes; not just for DC but for writing arab people in general.

Now google translate will not be much of a friend when you want to say something in arabic. The truth is, there's standard arabic, the type of arabic that is written, formal, official, the arabic of the Quran, basically unchanged for centuries. That's the google translate arabic. That's the common ground for arabs. Then there are dialects. The dialects vary drastically from region to another, and basically nobody actually speaks standard Arabic, especially not in casual conversation. The dialects closest to standard Arabic are generally in the middle east. Not exactly standard arabic, but very close. If you're writing north Africans, you should know that google translate will practically not help you whatsoever. We - algerians, tunisians, libyans, moroccans, mostly - have dialects so different that it's hard for a lot of middle easterns to understand us. Some of those differences come from colonization. I'm Tunisian, we were colonized by France 1881-1956 and a good percentage of the words we say are french or derivatives of french words, even our arabic words are either modified from standard arabic or basically made up. We also have an Amazigh background, etc etc.

TL;DR: if you're an amazing writer that wants to accurately write a conversation or line of dialogue in arabic, please find a native from the region your character's dialect is from and tell them to translate it for you.
