marauders’ laughter headcanons:
- sirius sometimes bites down on his fist to not laugh as loudly— remus does this as well, but it’s more of him hiding his smile behind his fist so no one knows he’s laughing/smiling (which is a little pointless anyway because the ends of his eyes crinkle up easier than everyone else’s)
- remus probably giggles a little. i can imagine first year him laughing with the other boys while recovering from a particularly bad full moon and he’s just. So shy but its so so cute
- on the other hand… once he's more comfortable with them, he starts to laugh a little more openly when it comes to dirty jokes and stuff (and that’s just how it starts)
- i wouldn’t say any one of them has particularly infectious laughter, but when remus starts laughing i think things just feel especially lighter for all 4 of them and it doesn’t matter how hard they were laughing before– when remus truly loses it their laughter automatically becomes so much more genuine and gigglier (and synchronised! idk why i see that happening but i do)
- and also i kinda think remus has the kind of laughter that not everyone can remember
- does that make sense? like it's really easy to recall the sound of james' laughter but not remus. it's like you remember seeing him laugh but never what it sounds like. unless you're jamesorsiriusorpeter of course.
- i think sirius and remus both have a little bit of a rasp in their laughs. it’s usually remus but sirius occasionally has it too. james kindaaa does too but it’s more of him sounding a little bit hoarse when he’s laughed too much and/or too hard.
- i think sirius always looked a little surprised whenever he found something funny that wasn’t a joke made by james
- not like in a bad way but his eyebrows will just be a little raised as he starts laughing
- also not in a mean way he just looks a little caught off guard, that’s all. almost as though he doesn’t expect anyone outside of the marauders to actually be funny.
- i also have this hc that’s a little stupid but i think the first time lily evans made sirius black laugh was the very same day his opinion of her changed acutely. like he probably walked in on james and lily hanging out or whatever and tried to pull james away when lily made a completely dry/witty comment that just caught him by surprise and he started laughing before he processed anything
- and i think he was impressed enough that he left them alone that day but yeah whatever it’s just a silly concept i like to believe and think about at times
- i think peter would have the most… normal laughter out of all four of them (for lack of a better word, really)
- but he’s also the one that sends everyone back into a laughing fit if they so much as make eye contact with him/glance at him
- i think james probably giggles too (just like remus)— but i think his laughter has a tendency to evolve from loud guffaws with sirius to like… laughter where you're laughing so hard it's silent. giggles are just his default version of genuine laughter.
- and also i BET remus and james had those silent laughing fits together so so much
- and that whenever james and pete laugh together they probably have their faces in their hands while their shoulders just shake violently and in sync
- also james is SO touchy when he laughs. he has this tendency of holding onto some part of the other person while he laughs and this eventually gets passed onto sirius and by 4th year, 80% of their laughing fits would just be them holding onto each other for dear life as they rolled about wherever.
- also i think james had a tendency to have a like… roaring kind of laughter whenever someone outside the marauders said something funny, but it would be more of a hoarse/giggly kind of laugh when its his favourites being funny
- i feel like all in all the marauders probably start off laughing really loudly together before naturally progressing into silent shaking laughter and that’s like, their peak, yk?
- but also part of the reason why they seem so exclusive sometimes is because of the way they can be laughing SO HARD together while being completely silent
- so they’re just like— thumping on each others’ backs and wiggling around in their seats and rolling about the ground while no one has a clue about what they're laughing about or when they started
- also this isn't really laughter related but i genuinely do believe that not a single one of the marauders were stupid or slow. i think they were all really intelligent and even pete (who was canonically hanging onto james and sirius rather than hanging with them), wasn’t as dumb as he was made out to be and that he just seemed very average in comparison to them but even then, he wasn’t slow (or at least, as slow as a person can be)
- which leads me to my next point which is that although the marauders definitely laughed over a multitude of silly things, they were also quick up to pick up on and make jokes that required a certain level of intelligence and wit to even grasp
- and that basically kinda adds onto their exclusivity thing because not everyone’s smart enough to get it™
- sorry but i really like crediting the marauders for their intelligence and talent like sometimes i think people just don’t talk about james and sirius’ intelligence enough
- okay that's it thanks please don’t be mean these are just my opinions and you don’t have to agree ❤️

I wish the marauders lived in the present day. Just imagine the chaos Sirius Black and James Potter could have gotten up to with Google at their fingertips. Every detail known to humanity in the palms of their hands (and one very harried half-muggle in Remus to walk through the technology with them). They would have been unstoppable.
And they would have enjoyed Florence & The Machine and Mumford & Sons just as much as they did Bowie and the Beatles.
marauders fans i love you but "i wish i lived in the seventies ugh!" yeah no thanks, i like having rights

Rules huh? Pt.3
Sirius black x james sister reader
Warnings: use of y/n, fem reader, dating, mentions of kissing (nothing explicit) , lmk if I missed any.
Synopsis: when the rule is broken you just gotta go over the pieces right? What happens when your brother finds out?
pt 1, pt 2
"No, no! Nope! I refuse to believe that"
James's voice blared through the four boys' dormitory. His tone bothered and unsure.
"But prongs I saw it with my own two eyes!"
said an exasperated peter.
A sigh left James as he comprehended what peter had just spewed out of his mouth the moment he came into the dorm frantic and out of breath.
"your eyes are like buttons! You must have seen someone else!"
James was quick to shut him, simply refusing to believe that sirius black of all people- their sirius would be out picking flowers, presumably for a lady too.
"what in Godric's name is going on here?"
Out came Remus's voice him being out at the library when this whole fiasco was being discussed.
"It's padfoot! He's-"
"-flowers!" Finished peter
"what...? did another girl hex him again? This time turning him to... flowers..?"
Hearing that sirius had most likely become an inanimate vase of flowers Remus grew visibly concerned.
"what? No!"
The two boys replied almost instantly, holding back a laugh as they remembered when Matilda Inkwood had turned the poor boy into a ferret.
"Then?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I still do not understand why you insist on following me sirius. If my brother were to find us he'd-"
"-I'm aware love. I think I of all people would know what your brother would do if he were to see us. He'd perhaps not glance at my direction for a whole week."
Sirius's voice had a calm tone to it, as if he wasn't just talking about his bestfriend completely ignoring him.
Over the course of the past three weeks and two days your relationship had grown stronger.
Whether it was sneaking kisses in between classes or holding hands under then tables at the great hall, It was made sure that james was to never find out. Not until you were sure he'd be calm that is.
James's infatuation with lily had died down after he finally scored a date with the poor redhead. Not like she had much of a choice though, considering that james had just let her know the time and the place before his mouth zipped and he left her at the courtyard.
But enough about them. Sirius decided that meeting you in the astronomy tower after lunch would be a spectacular idea. As if james never roams this area.
It was sirius's favourite place in the entirety of hogwarts, he wouldn't shut his mouth about it if payed to.
The other three marauders had even made a bet about it with the raven haired boy for fifteen galleons. That was a large sum.
Needless to say he lost the bet within half a week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Remus was explained the whole situation and took just as long to realise the gravity of this, the boys decided that spying on him would be their best course of action.
Sure it may not be the cleverest of plans but with moony on their side they were sure to find out who Sirius's secret lover was. As termed by wormtail.
So, imagine James's astonishment when he finds the two of you on the astronomy tower a little to close for his liking, the flowers Sirius had apparently picked out laying still beside your lap as you picked at your skin while giggling at something the boy beside had said.
His mouth agape, eyes blinking twice, thrice to get the awful image off his vision, he sat there with an expression so Humourous that even the professors would find hilarious.
Walking back to the dorm, trying to keep his steps straight james decided that breaking one of his rules would not lead to a good fate for black.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was thirty minutes past curfew when sirius entered his dorm room, as silently as his footsteps would allow.
The last thing he expected was his three friends awaiting his presence sitting on their respective beds and staring at him, two of them in pity and the other in anger.
"where were you?"
James asked
Sirius was standing at the entrance like a deer in headlights, which is ironic considering that the real deer is asking the question.
"Do you have something you want to tell us pads?"
This time it was Remus's turn, his voice gentle and kind, unlike the demanding tone of james, remus truely wanted his friend to be spared.
"astronomy tower? Y/n?"
...and peter, why does he always have to speak in broken words? And why does it make sense?
"Look prongs, i know i basically broke the one rule you set up for us and I'm sorry, I really am. I didn't fathom it would get this far."
"you're sorry?"
"yes"
"you're sorry you're dating my sister?"
"Yes- well! No!- i mean I am but-"
"one question sirius. One question, and you'll answer with utmost honesty. Understood?"
"yes prongs" sirius ofcourse showed no disobedience , everyone knew he wasn't ever sirius to prongs, it was always padfoot. And this meant he was serious, so he zipped up.
"do you love y/n? Does she mean something to you or are you behind her because she's just another girl at Hogwarts?"
james had a threatening voice, and oddly enough sirius failed to notice that...
" I do prongs, i love her with all i am,
I love the way she braids her hair, i love the way she stares when she's confused, I love how her brows twitch into a frown when she's concerned and how her tone is always laced with love and adoration.
I love her eyes when they sparkle as she talks about you, her friends, her owl and what not.
Merlin I love her voice and her sweet comebacks, when she tries to be mean and comes off as adorable. I love her prongs and trust me when i say that hurting her would be the last thing i'd do"
Taking a deep breath after finishing his monologue sirius took a step back ,expecting a loud thunder from james when he stood up and walked towards him.
however it seemed today was full of the unexpected, james's hand lifted and fell on Sirius's shoulder, landing with a thud that echoed across the silent room.
"you hurt her...and you're dead to me Sirius Orion Black. Alright?"
Sirius smiled, his eyes forming wrinkles at the corners.
In the end, james did infact glance at his direction the whole week, even more so than usual.
It seems as though some rules are meant to be broken.
A/n: this is it, the end I can't do this anymore lol imma start smth new, maybe a remus fic? Or anything else that strikes inspo tbh. Thanks for reading till this part and feel free to stick around for more marauders fanfics amongst other stuff :)
Sybil: I don't think we should do this.
Emmeline: Come on, it'll be fine.
Pandora: No, I think Syb' right. We shouldn't do this.
Annabella: Dora, it's your last year. You have to.
Pandora: But, their my friends.
Emmeline: You have friends in every house, Dora.
Pandora: Which makes it wrong to do anything to any of the houses.
Sybil: Lin might be right.
Emmeline: Besides, Lia, Cissa, Bella, Andy, Ri, and Ted pranked us their last year, too.
Pandora: *sighs* Fine. Let's do it.
Annabella: I get to come, right?
Pandora: You can do this in seven years, yeah?
Annabella: But Panda-
Pandora: This is just for us. Just like Ev should say no to Mav. Ok?
Annabella: Fine. I'll go bother Mav.
_
Marlene: Jamie, I have a position for you.
James: What is it.
Mary: We're teaming up to prank all the houses.
Sirius: Ooh, yes. Slytherin first.
Lily: You just want to prank your brother.
Sirius: Exactly.
Frank: No, Sirius, you can't only prank your brother.
Remus: He's not in on this planning.
Peter: He has good idea' though.
Alice: All four of you prank too much. Your not aloud.
Marlene: Except James. We need him.
Lily: And Remus.
Mary: Pete, too.
Frank: So, Sirius is the only one not aloud to prank.
-
Amelia: What are you thinking?
Edgar: I don't know. We might need help.
Hestia: From who? The Hufflepuffs have made their groups.
Edgar: I was thinking the so called Marauders.
Amelia: Eddy, no! Their Gryffindor's!
Hestia: Mel, I think he's right.
Amelia: Wait, we don't need them. We just need someone who hangs out with them enough.
Edgar: Or, someone who hangs out their partner who hangs out them.
Hestia: Me? I don't know, guys.
Amelia: Come on, Tia. It'll be fine.
Hestia: Oh, fine. Let's do it.
-
Dorcas: So, are we gonna prank Dora or?
Barty: It'll be funny.
Evan: No, we're not pranking Dora or Anna.
Emma: How much do you wanna bet their gonna prank us?
Aurora: Oh, 100%. They will definitely prank us.
Regulus: Especially with Emmeline there.
Mavan: Anna would help.
Evan: Mav, go somewhere else. We're planning.
Mavan: But, Ev-
Evan: You can plan in two years for yours, ok?
Mavan: Fine.
-
*Everyone screams* There's smoke bombs, water spraying everywhere, people's faces turning purple, and even people's fears running all over the great hall.
Smoke bombs were courtesy of Hufflepuff, - Amelia, Edgar, and Hestia - the water was Ravenclaw, - Sybil, Emmeline, and Pandora - peoples faces turning purple is a potion created by the Gryffindor's, - Mary, James, Frank, Alice, Lily, Marlene, Remus, Sirius, and Peter - and people's fears running wild is a spell created by the Slytherin's - Regulus, Emma, Aurora, Barty, Evan, and Dorcas.
It's complete chaos, and the prankers are loving it. Their all standing off to the side just watching all the mayhem unfold. The Slytherin's are smiling the most because of how much disorder they caused.
Pranking day is the best thing that has ever happened to Hogwarts. This day, they can prank all they want and not get detention for it. Even McGonagall is off to the side smiling.
Life of the Party
Pairing: Sirius Black x Fem!reader
Characters: Sirius Black, Fem!reader, James Potter, Lily Potter nee Evans, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Marlene McKinnon, Dorcas Meadows, Nymphadora Tonks (briefly mentioned), Harry Potter (briefly mentioned)
Warnings: Angst, this is random, during the first war, has bits of the sceond war involved, this probably doesn't track with the timeline, but certainly kept me entertained, not all information is accurate but that's to be expected, I had no idea where this was going, the last line makes me cry on the inside
Word Count: 2,601
A/N: Was I watching "Only Murders in the building" while writing this, giving it the murder mystery vibe, I feel it has? Maybe. No regrets though.
James took his time proposing
Voldemort slowly started getting stronger and then Peter joined him.
There are no known reactions to the bloodroot poison... I made up my own, hence the murder mystery vibe.
This is partially inspired by "Life of the Party" by Shawn Mendes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I’m telling you to take your shot, it might be scary.” You shrug, "maybe she's ready for you two to take the next step." You're just hoping that if you push him a little more, they can be even happier.
And maybe, James can finally shut up about wanting to have the same last name, whatever comes first.
James nods, taking in every word you’re saying.
“We don’t have the time to be sorry," you tell him.
The faint whispers of evil lurking around every corner are slowly becoming louder in your mind.
You hold your breath for a second.
“She’s right,” Marlene shrugs.
Dorcas shakes her head, not liking it when the two of you agree with one another.
The blonde shares a look with the girl closest to her. “Why doesn’t he just man up and ask her?”
The dark-haired woman shrugs, “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong person.”
Sirius leans against you with his arm wrapped around your shoulder, "am I hearing that Prongs is going to be an idiot again? Still don't know how to pop the question, do you?"
James rolls his eyes. "Thank you," he says to you before running off. "Look at that, we're alone now."
“Are we invisible to you, you dolt?” Dorcas grabs Marlene’s wrist and hauls her out of your home.
“I think he's going to do it now.”
“He’s not.”
“You want to bet?”
The blonde nods, “I do. Ten pounds.”
“And a butter beer.”
Marlene scowls, “fine.”
They shake hands.
“You’re on.”
-
He sneaks around your home, making sure no one can see him. You shake your head. "Nice try, Sirius."
"What?" He pouts, following you after you brush him away from you.
"Don't push me away. I know you love me." He flutters his lashes as if that will further prove his case.
"I would love some peace and quiet. Besides, shouldn't you be checking on Remus right now? It's almost his time."
He sighs, "yeah. I just... wanted to see you before."
"Well, you did and now it's time to say goodbye."
"Fine, fine," he lets out a deep sigh, as if you've done something to him. "Promise me one thing?"
You stare into his eyes.
“You’ll tell me if you’ve been seeing things when I get back.”
You nod, gulping because you know what’s going to happen before then.
The corner of his lips curls upwards, thinking about being alone with you and hopefully asking you something he should have had a long time ago. "I'll be off now, little miss “life of the party”. I'll see you later?"
You rest your hands against the counter, preventing yourself from falling. You nod, "of course, Pads."
He smirks, shaking his head to rid him of his thoughts although he’s always fond when you call him by his nickname. "Alright, I'm off."
"Bye," you whisper, listening to his motorbike get farther from your home. You groan, raising one hand to your head. It's worse.
'The whispers get louder when the ticking stops.'
You want to forget it, but you can't.
His screams haunt you; you can't see his face, you don’t know who it is but it's more than enough to ruin your sleep, invading your mind at the most inconvenient times.
Your family's large grandfather clock chimes.
Nothing's going to work now, you know it. You don't know why you’re going in here but it’s the one place you believe to be in your best interest to reside in during this time.
You grab your wand from your boot and wave it.
The bookshelf moves out of the way.
A heavy breath escapes you.
No one but you know of your meek at home potions room. It's better this way, none of them will ask any questions or throw themselves into research.
By the time your clock chimes again, James and Lily will be the next future couple followed by a sweet little baby boy who will help carry on their family line.
Remus will be trying to finish his potion for the upcoming full moon.
Sirius will be the last of his siblings but not of his family's pureblood status.
And Peter-
“Come out tonight. Come out tonight,” you mutter, closing your eyes for a moment, waiting. "You found me."
"I never wanted this to happen."
"If you didn't want it to happen, you wouldn't have joined him. You wouldn’t have cowered into his grasp because you think he’s getting stronger."
"I- I'm sorry."
"Are you? Because I think you don’t have the time to be sorry. Or are you just saying that because of the bloodroot poison you put in my drink last week?"
Peter pauses in the doorway. "When did you know?"
"It's obvious when somethings not right with your body and you're stupid to think I wouldn't notice."
"You really want to fight with the person who could kill you?"
"You already have."
"It wasn't my choice."
"You didn't know whether you should have stayed on this side and when they found you, you chose to put that damned mark on your arm. You made a decision long ago. I'm just," you hold your breath, finding it hard to take a simple breath now. "Wondering what made you change?"
"Nothing," he mumbles.
"That's such a lie and you know it!"
His head snaps in your direction. "Everyone made me this way!"
You struggle to gulp down the saliva that filled your mouth.
"I was tired of being the joke of it all," he sniffs.
You don't know whether to feel bad for him or help him.
"I wanted the jokes to stop. I thought they would when we grew up, but they barely did."
"What jokes?" You whisper, now losing your voice.
"It doesn't matter now, what's done is done."
"Soon to be done. You're here to report to him that I'm dead, right?"
"N- no."
"You're distracting me, waiting until the end."
"Stop it."
"I hope you feel better."
"Better?"
"Thinking you chose the right side-" You take a step closer towards the table, your hand reaching out for it until you lose your balance and begin tumbling forward.
Peter reaches for you and holds you.
This is the last time he'll ever see you. And it hits him, what he's done to his friend.
There are no changing things now.
He adjusts you, cradling you in his arms as he sits behind you; the way a friend should comfort another one in need.
"Are you happy?"
He glances at you from the corner of his eye, staring at your side profile. "What?"
There's no more fight left in you and there's one thing you want someone to know, your last fighting words were something that will haunt your murderer. "Knowing you chose the wrong side."
"I-"
You close your eyes, not wanting your last sight to be of the secret you kept from your friends.
The grandfather clocks chimes once more and the whispers of his mind fill the silence.
Peter throws his head back, tears trickling down the sides of his face.
Nothing will ever be the same and no one will ever know what he's done.
Not until the end of the first war.
He carefully moves away from you and places you against the desk making it look as if you were sitting against the desk when you pass.
He kept it quiet of how you passed until the night he purposefully let Sirius take the blame for everything.
No one was able to truly move on after, most of all he and-
“She called herself the “life of the party” forever making a fool of herself,” he chuckles to himself.
"Pads, are you telling Harry the same story?"
The man in question turned around with his precious godson bundled in his arms. "No."
"Why lie when we all know it, Sirius?" Lily asks, holding her son's bottle as she tries to take the boy from him. "It's time for his bottle, Sirius."
"I can do it."
"No."
"Come on," he whines, with his bottom lip quivering.
It takes her back to every time when he would beg for your attention. She purses her lips, adjusting Harry in her arms. "It's almost nap time."
"Fine. James, sleep fort?"
"Of course, how else does one take a nap?"
She shakes her head at the two, knowing you would have something to say about it. "James."
"Coming, dear."
"I'll be here while you go help the man of the house."
"Hey."
Sirius raises his arms, "I'm kidding. I'm kidding."
He's left alone with his thoughts, something that's become more dangerous than before.
He thinks back to the story he was telling his godson, which was the night before your guys' seventh year when you decided to do some digging and found the bottle of fire whisky he had hidden, saving for a special occasion and ended up giving yourself a nickname.
You were so, so... drunk.
-
You smile and raise your hands, not at all careful to hide the bottle of fire whiskey. “It's time to be the life of the party.”
Everyone was confused as to why you did this, why you’d lost yourself.
"Someone needs to get her down from that table before she trips and breaks something," Lily hisses.
"We can use magic to heal her."
"Now is not the time to sass me, Sirius."
"Uh- nope, that one was me," Remus raises his hands.
"Someone please, help me get her down."
The three boys take a step forward at the same time.
"Come on, darling. It's time to come down."
You pout, holding the bottle close to your chest. "I don't wanna."
James snorts. "Can it, Prongs."
"I didn't say anything, Padfoot."
"Boys, please. Let's just get close to the table and then Pads can try and ease her down while we help?" The werewolf adds.
"Siri, come up and join me."
"Join you?"
"Become the life of the party with me."
“Sweetheart, I already am.” He holds his hand out for you to take. “Come and party with me down here.”
“No,” you tell him.
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Prongs, Moony,” he jerks his head to the side. “Over here.”
They follow, leaving the red head to deal with you.
“Alright, boys. Moons, you grab the bottle while Prongs my boy,” he smacks the bespectacled boy’s shoulder. “You distract, pull her in with that odd charm that drew your rosy, red head in.”
“I feel like I should be offended.”
Sirius raises a brow, “are you?”
“No.”
“Then you’re fine. Ready boys. On three.”
“Please don’t try to use sports analogies,” Remus interrupts.
“Rude.”
“Hey,” James calls out for you. “Look at me.”
This gives Remus enough time to remove the bottle from your hands and for Sirius to pull you down.
“What made you want to get up on a table?” He asked, holding you in his arms.
“I wanted to get away.”
He glances up, knowing you probably don’t want the others to hear. “Get away from what?”
“The images in my mind.”
“Do you-”
“She needs to have something other than that damned whiskey in her system. Bring her over to the couch,” Lily tells him.
-
He never knew what you saw before that night and didn’t ask when you didn’t remember anything that happened.
This was one of the first few sights that haunted his mind, followed by his best friend and his wife a year after.
That’s why when he saw you for the first time, he was going through so many emotions.
His voice calling out to you wasn’t out of the norm but seeing him when you turned around after the light taps on your shoulder was certainly a surprise.
Your eyes widen at the sight of him. “Sirius?”
He throws himself forward, almost squeezing you with his might. “It’s been too long, darling.”
Your hands shake as you fist handfuls of his shirt tightly, wrinkling his shirt in the process. “I- you,” you push him back. “You shouldn’t be here. You- you- Sirius you can’t be here,” you whisper.
“You shouldn’t be either but here we are. Just focus on this.” He cups your cheek.
“What?”
His thumb brushes across your cheek. “We’re together again.”
“You should be out there, living your life and- and teaching Harry so much more.”
“I am right where I need to be.” He smiles at you, staring into your eyes. “I’m back with you.”
You gulp, “you’re still an idiot.”
“No, I’m Sirius.”
You shake your head and pull him in for another hug… until an echoing voice causes you to furrow your brows.
“Pads! Pads!”
“Oh no,” you mumble.
“What?”
“Pads turn your stupid head around.”
“Who’s calling me stupid?”
You’re happy you let go of him when you did otherwise, you’d be on the ground with the two idiots you find yourself lucky enough to call friends.
“I didn’t want to interrupt the two of you.”
“I know,” you assure Lily. “It’s okay. I’m just happy to see you guys again.”
She wraps an arm around your shoulder, pulling you closer. “Me too.”
“Don’t forget about us,” Marlene calls out.
You two spin around, finding her and Dorcas running towards you guys.
“Took him long enough.”
“Marlene,” you hiss.
“What? I can’t pretend like you haven’t been depressed since that night. Everyone missed you and then when the first war came and we came here, you were so relieved that he wasn’t here but longing for him to come to you and you know it. You can’t hide it.”
You roll your eyes.
“So, you did miss me?” He says, staring up at you with a stargazed look in his eyes.
You turn away, avoiding his gaze. “No.”
“Someone’s lying, and it isn’t Sirius,” he says, attempting to egg you on.
“Come on, girls.”
“Wait- no.” He chases after you.
-
All of you stop, staring around the cemetery.
“What do we do now?”
“We wander around in true spirit fashion.”
“I vote we leave James behind,” you say, raising your hand.
“I second that vote,” Lily and Marlene add.
“Lily pad,” James gasps.
“Dorcas, come on. Don’t do this to me.”
“I’m with the side that doesn’t whine and complain.”
“But I’m nothing without whining and complaining. I was the only male here till Pads decided to join us.”
“I can see why they didn’t want you around.”
“Pads! I’m offended now!”
“Oh, well.” Sirius shrugs.
“You two haven’t changed a bit,” you comment. “It’s nice. I’ve missed seeing all of us being like this.”
“Like what?” Lily asks.
“Being young, not worried about a war coming our way.”
“I think we can all agree on that.”
“Did you all hear Moons has begun to pursue Tonks?” Sirius says.
“No."
"No way.”
-
You lead the others towards Diagon’s Alley, feeling a butter beer kind of night is something you all need.
“Don’t give her any fire whiskey. Otherwise, her “life of the party” personality will come out.” Marlene teases.
“That was one time,” you defend yourself.
“Lies,” Dorcas says, coughing into her hand.
“You all suck.” You pout.
Sirius leans in, “how’s it feel?”
“Don’t be like that, Sirius.”
“What? So, Sirius? I can’t, that’s who I am.”
“I hate you.”
“You love me.”
You stare into his eyes. ‘I missed you more than anything, Siri.’
“I do.”
His smile widens, “I knew it.”
You close your eyes, wanting this to fill the blocks you made in your memory.
Everyone needs a little happy scene they can think back to.
Headcanons about James Potter? Thanks!
Hi! This is quite hard since I'm a recent James Potter stan. I was originally (and still am) a Severus Snape connoisseur. I don't know if you've noticed, but the nastier a character is, the more I like them. Of course, I personally believe Snape to be ultimately good, but that's a whole other post. Back to James!
The mom friend of the group.
Refused to use his dad's hair products. He loved his messy hair.
Jokes: either the best, sassiest, hard-hitting ones or the corniest, absolute worst ones ever.
Infectious laughter.
Also, the Marauders were very much James' friend group, as I've said before. Someone reblogged my Sirius HCs post saying that The marauders are essentially about three boys trying to become james bf and only one succeeding. I tend to agree.
One of those extremely charismatic people, those magnets that attract. He was tall, and “cute” but he wasn't as devastatingly handsome as Sirius was. He was extremely good at Quidditch and in school. He was an all-rounder, as you might say. Transfiguration prodigy, heart of a lion, funny prankster, approachable, jock. He was the kind of person you wouldn't resent when they teased you (as a Gryffindor), because he was just like that, our boy James.
People tripped over themselves to be his friend, which is why Remus and Peter especially were so grateful that he had picked them. Why did he hang out with them when the rest of Hogwarts wanted him? It made them feel like the élite.
Everything written in this meta is exactly his dynamic with Sirius.
Also had very dark sides. He could be very cruel, and very self-centred, he and Sirius actively made each other worse on more than one occasion.
He was a bully, and quite classist too. He came from a wealthy background, even though he wasn't “noble” in the way Sirius was, and therefore had some of those biases. Albeit kind people, I can see his parents as being a bit old-fashioned, and more than a bit classist. Those beliefs are intrinsic in him when he meets Snape. He sees a boy who is rough around the edges, ugly, and dirt poor and picks on him immediately. The dislike is automatic.
He's a person with a very black-and-white way of seeing the world. His personal cruelty is just boys being boys, even though taking someone's underwear off forcibly in public is very traumatizing sexual assault, and asking a girl out repeatedly after she's already told you no a million times is a major dick move. But you can bet your ass that someone using a Darker curse in a duel would have had his whole-hearted contempt. James hated Dark Magic.
He was loyal to a fault to his friends. The literal definition of ride or die and I imagine he might have taken more than a detention off of Peter's or Remus' shoulders - the former because his grades were already low, and the latter because of his health reasons.
For some reason, I headcanon him as eating a lot.
Growth spurt at the end of fifth year, like Harry. Lily very clearly did a double-take when he saw him back at school.
In constant search of a personal style. He always has brand new robes, but when he tries to dress more like a Muggle to impress Lily, it's a mix of Sirius' grunge aesthetic and Remus' smartest preppy clothes. I like James with a preppy-but-cool style, very different from Remus' worn-in, comfortable sweaters and vests (vests, Moony, who the fuck wears vests in 1976?)
Very personal headcanon: Voldemort tried to recruit him through other people first and then personally, at a social event one of the summers before he had even finished school, and he said no both times. The same happened with Lily (but I won't tell ya where ihihi)
He didn't hesitate when asked by Dumbledore to join the Order of the Phoenix.
If he hadn't gone into hiding, I could see him becoming an Auror. He had the grades and the bravery. Not my boy Sirius, though. Babygirl didn't work a day in his life (I have no dream job, I do not dream of labour).
Was more distrusting than Lily. It's funny because I see him as an idealist and her as a pragmatist, but I do think of her as someone who wanted to see the good in people, while James as someone who categorized you pretty quickly, and once he formed an idea, he wouldn't easily change his mind.
He had tunnel vision when it concerned the people he loved (see: Wormtail).
Was the only Marauder Peter couldn't turn against the others during the First War. I think Peter successfully played Sirius and Remus against each other, but James would have regarded it the height of dishonour to mistrust his friends.
I think he might have had a girlfriend or two, and definitely snogged girls before Lily, but I can't imagine how hard it must have been for them to be with someone that was a) drooling over another girl and b) very much his best friend's boyfriend.
Kendall Roy/Stewy Hosseini dynamic BUT HEALTHY
this post. (just kidding, just kidding)
.
Harry James Potter's life was no easy task, but in the best way possible.
Voldemort had been defeated on the fateful 31st October of 1981, within the dark sky of halloween night. No one knew exactly what happened; just that he went to the Potter's to kill the youngest of them, and the curse, apparently, backfired. There was also a rumor about a stag and a black dog, but we will not get into detail. All that mattered was that Voldemort was gone. For good.
Most of his followers went to Azkaban, including Peter Pettigrew, for his betrayal and hidden devoted passion to the dark side. There were some rebellions in the following years, but nothing too big, as their leader had fallen. And because there were such good aurors taking care of everything.
So, having James Potter as his father, Sirius Black as his godfather, and Remus Lupin as his, basically, second father and godfather, growing up was eventful, to say the least.
Don't get him wrong; he absolutely loved them with all of his might. He just wished that they made it easier for him sometimes. Like now, for example.
It was a typical wednesday morning. Everyone was in the Great Hall, as breakfast time was still going and there would be no classes for another half an hour.
You were currently almost completely in your boyfriend's lap, eating your cereals and talking happily to Ginny and Hermoine.
Harry, however, was not very happy; in fact, he was dreading every minute of this breakfast.
He had his arms wrapped around your waist, and his head was buried in your shoulder, eyes closed. He was trying his best to ignore his friends' teasing, the glances from people around and, mainly, the big windows.
Why? Because Hedwig would enter the Hall any minute now. Why was he dreading it? Howlers, of course.
He had pranked Snape along with the Weasley twins the previous day. It was pretty good, if you asked Harry. All of the cauldrons had exploded, and confetti was thrown at Snape, as it was his birthday. They just had to do it. One week of detention and McGonagalls lectures were more than worth it. But there was a little detail that Harry always seemed to forget; the howler he would get the day after.
There were just three options:
1, James and Sirius congratulating him and wishing they were there;
2, Lily wanting to beat his arse;
Or 3, everything mixed together and the complete chaos.
So, here he was; trying to hide in you, hoping you would save him. "Harry, love, I swear to Merlin, I loved your prank-"
"Hey!--" Fred and George yelled from somewhere.
"- but what were you expecting? They do this all the time. You better be hoping that my mom won't be in that howler, then it would be embarrassing," you grinned at him. In all honesty, you usually were involved in the mess (growing up with Harry would do that to you) and your mom was a troublemaker along with the Marauders in their years- the only voice of sense being Lily (even though we all know that Lily secretly loved it all). So, this didn't really faze you; it was actually amusing.
You weren't part of this prank because Harry wanted it to be a surprise. And one hell of a surprise it was.
You too got a week worth of detention because you couldn't stop laughing. Ron and Dean got 3 days. The rest of the students got all one night just because.
"Why can't they just be normal people?" Harry's muffled voice asked.
You rolled your eyes, still smiling. "We are talking about our families here, Harry. Nothing less should be expected."
A few moments passed. Everyone was talking with their friends, and the High Table was still full with all of the professor's and staff. The noise in the Great Hall was full of life, and it was strangely comforting.
Suddenly all the chatter died down, and everyone was looking at the windows. Harry immediately seated upright and snapped his head to the windows direction.
The motion almost made you fall, and that made Harry wrap his arms tighter around you, and pull your body flushed against his well-built chest.
A snowy owl majestically flew around the room with two letters in its beak. One of them was bright red.
Harry loudly groaned which got several chuckles from around. He could swear that Hedwig did this every time for attention. Sirius probably bribed her to do it; fly in the most attention-bringer moment. Fucking Padfoot.
The letters fell into your lap, as you were still on Harry. You cackled loudly as you picked the howler up and wiggled it right in front of Harry's face.
Harry pouted and took the letter, sighing. Looking around, he saw every single pair of eyes on them, the silence defining.
Harry closed his eyes tightly in exasperation, taking one last deep breath, and opened the howler.
"HARRY JAMES POTTER, WHAT THE HELL--" Lily's voice bellowed.
"I AM SO FUCKING PROUD OF YOU, SON!--"
"James Fleamont,"
"MOONY MOONY MOONY, DID YA HEARD ABOUT THE PRANK?!"
"SIRIUS, NO! WHERE DID YOU CAME FROM, OUT OF MY HOUSE!"
"PADS, THE PRANK ON SNIVELLUS, BRILLIANT! He learned it from me--"
"Actually, if he learned it from someone it was from me. Remember that time, Remus and Sirius were--" your mother's voice echoed through the letter.
"NO! Out of here!" Remus' voice yelled in the background.
"And he got what? One week worth of detention? AMAZING!" Sirius laughed.
"Minnie's getting soft, honestly--"
"Harry, please behave; I love you- James you get back here right this second or I swear to Godric."
"Lily-flower, darling, hey--!" James yelped after a big metallic bang!.
"Goodbye, Harry, " Remus chuckled.
"Don't forget to write to us! And you too Y/N!" your mother excitedly said.
"PADFOOT NO--!"
And the howler ended.
For ten solid seconds, no one said anything.
And then, the chaos started.
Yells and money was being passed around. At this point, it was regular free entertainment for everyone. Harry wanted to at least pretend that he was embarrassed, but really, he couldn't.
You yelled out a 'yes!' before jumping from Harry’s lap and running to the High Table.
Once you reached it, you slammed your two hands right in front of Dumbledoor and McGonagall. "Well, professor, it seems like you have a small debt to pay, isn't it?" you smirked.
Dumbledoor sighed. "Very well. Ms. Y/L/N," he gave you a small bag full of galleons. "Minerva," he gave McGonagall another one.
"Yes, Albus, Ms. Y/L/N is quite right, I reckon. And I believe you also owe me something, no?" Minerva raised her eyebrows with a small proudful smile.
You high-fived McGonagall, who rolled her eyes, and put your galleons in a hidden pocket of your robe. "Nice doing business with you. Headmaster, Minnie," you started to walk run back to her table.
When you got there, everything was still the same. Yells, laughs, bickering, the usual. You took place in your boyfriend's lap again, this time facing him and grinned as you wrapped your arms around his neck. "Hello there, my love!"
Harry bit his lip, trying to contain his amusement. "How much did you get this time?"
You eyed him suspiciously. However, you quickly gave in when Harry raised an eyebrow. "...20 galleons," you answered proudly.
Harry grinned. "Why do they keep betting with you?"
"Maybe they still haven't memorised the sore taste of loss?" you sighed dramatically.
"Merlin, I love you so much," Harry laughed and brought your face closer.
"Of course you do, doesn't everybody?" you teased.
Harry deadpanned.
"I'm kidding! I'm kidding, I've been spending way too much time with Padfoot, haven't I?" you tried again. No response from Harry. You then beamed. "I love you."
Harry brushed your lips together, a soft smile adorning his face. And when you were sure he would kiss you, he suddenly smirked. "Doesn't everybody?"
"Harry James Potter!"
Yes, his life really was not easy, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
i love hurting people emotionally with my sad marauder things!!!! so fun!!!!
anyways.
here is james after regulus’ death.
TW: SELF HARM, BREAKDOWNS, DEATH.
—
it was a tuesday morning.
james had woken up to the sun shining on his face, and the birds chirping.
his eyes adjusted to the bright light coming through his partially opened curtains, and he reached for the glasses on his bedside table.
when he turned, he expected to bump into a certain red head— lily, but she wasn’t there.
in fact, no one was in the house.
usually, remus, sirius and peter would all be downstairs laughing and stealing all of his food; he heard no laughing.
weird.
james suspected maybe they all were at sirius and remus’ place, but it wouldn’t make sense as to why they wouldn’t wake him up? why lily didn’t.
confused, he got up, pulled some sweats on and a t-shirt which had been on his floor for who knows long, and headed out of their room.
the pair lived in a small cottage, lily didn’t want a giant mansion like his parents house— she said there would be too many rooms, too much space.
he slowly walked in the kitchen, expecting to see at least one person in it, but it was empty.
just a small note was on the kitchen table.
it read:
james,
gone to marlene’s, somethings wrong.
didn’t want to wake you!
remus and sirius aren’t coming today, they’re on order business, but i’m sure they’ll be in for tea. pete will be coming too i assume.
i’ll be back soon! marls seems a bit shook, so i’ll let you know what’s happening there.
see you later love.
lily xx
james set down the note, relief rushing through his body. every time nobody was in the house it made james feel anxious.
he never liked to be left alone, especially after regulus.
he’d done some bad things when alone; when he wasn’t on his meds.
lily said she’d be back soon though.
james checked his watch, the time being 10 past 11, he slept in late today.
the ink on the paper wasn’t fresh, so lily must have gone a few hours ago— she would be back soon.
and james could have company.
he sat down on the chair after making a cup of coffee, taking in the silence, before sirius apparated into james’ kitchen, making him jump and spill his coffee a little.
“jesus fucking christ pads, you scared the shit out of me!”
sirius let out a small laugh, but it slowly fell as he continued looking at james.
“james,” he began. “something— something has happened,”
james’ worry and anxiety had come back full force in that exact moment.
“what has happened pads?” james asked.
“reg—“ his voice cracked, “regulus is dead.”
james froze.
he heard nothing sirius said next.
ringing was all he heard in his ears, he felt his breaths become uneven.
regulus
regulus
regulus
reg
reggie.
sirius clearly noticed james’ distress and moved backwards. he didn’t want to upset james even more, he had no idea how to comfort people.
he thought the best bet would be lily.
so he apparated immediately.
james watched sirius apparate.
he left him.
alone
again
regulus is dead
james felt his knees buckle and he could no longer support his weight.
he fell to the floor, gasping for air.
then the tears started. they were filling his eyes, he couldn’t see through them.
“no no no no no!” he shouted, he needed to make it stop.
make it stop
“regulus,” he choked out as he clawed at his arms, he needed to let it out.
he felt blood being drawn from his arms and continued, eventually stopping.
then james put himself into a ball and let out a scream of pure grief. it was agonising.
all he could feel was pain, pain that festered in him. pain that would be there for as long as he lived.
at this point, he was just sobbing and screaming, desperately trying to make it stop.
bloody was gushing from were he pressed so hard on his arm.
he didn’t care.
regulus was dead.
he didn’t get to say he loved him one last time.
images of regulus flashed through his mind— the kitchen door being flung open by someone.
james didn’t know who it was— nor did he care.
as he felt arms come around him, he leant into it.
“james!” lily said, she was clearly shocked by what james had done to himself, regulus’ death had sent him into a manic episode.
this was really really bad.
his meds had run out a few days ago. she was supposed to pick them up for him today.
“oh fuck james!”
she cleaned up james’ arm, casting her patronus, telling it to get sirius now.
in a matter of seconds, sirius appeared and looked at james and lily with pure shock.
he shouldn’t have left him.
“you shouldn’t have fucking him!” she yelled, and sirius continued looking at james.
“you know you fucking don’t leave him!”
“i— i know lily! i’m sorry!” sirius began, before he was cut of my james choking and coughing.
“lily,” he said quietly.
he turned and clutched her tightly.
she held him as tightly as she could.
“shh james, it’s okay darling,”
james continued sobbing.
regulus was dead, and james will never know how brave he was in the end.
james never was whole again.
and when the 31st october 1981 came, he never cowered away, and he welcomed death as an old friend.
HOW YOUR FIRST KISS WITH THE MARAUDERS + CO. WOULD GO ;
requested by anon—i hope you like it <3
James Potter ;
James would probably go down a traditional route.
He’d know immediately that he liked you and wouldn’t waste any time in asking you out, hoping desperately that you’d accept.
He’d take you on a simple date, probably to Hogsmeade where you’d walk around together, going into any of the shops you wanted to.
James would most likely insist he bought you something, anything, really—he just wanted to buy you something.
But there wouldn’t be anything you wanted enough that you couldn’t pay for yourself—like some sweets from Honeydukes.
He’d definitely take you to the Three Broom Sticks and sit you down in a little booth in the corner.
He’d flirt with you, laugh with you and exchange funny stories, enjoying every second of it, more than he thought he could.
You’d catch yourself staring one too many times, tuning out his words and focussing only on the way his mouth moved.
After the date was over, he’d walk you back to your dorm, his hand tucked into yours.
Having your back to your dorm room door, you’d smile sweetly, focussing on how close he was and the thumb rubbing lightly against your knuckles.
After a moment, the movement would stop and he’d untangle his fingers from yours, brining one hand up to your face.
He’d lean in slowly, waiting to see if you might move in closer too.
When you started to lean in, he’d quickly catch his lips with yours, pushing you back against the door and cupping your face in both hands.
Eventually, you’d pull away reluctantly, staring at him breathlessly. Another quick peck to the lips and you’d say goodnight.
His hand would remain perched on the doorframe as you closed the door behind you, resting on it once more with a smile on your face and fingers tracing over your lips.
On the other side, James’ forehead would be rested against the door before he turned around slowly and saw Sirius at the top of the stairs grinning from ear to ear.
“Enjoyed that, then?”
James would laugh, but wouldn’t deny it, of course.
Remus Lupin ;
Remus would probably have a hard time working up the courage to kiss you.
There’d be so many times he came close but backed out at the last minute, fearing you might back away and laugh at him.
It would be a running joke with his friends, including bets being made on when he’d finally manage to do it.
They’d always be very encouraging too though, because they weren’t as blind as Remus.
It would finally happen on a normal day, doing something completely ordinary and usual for you—maybe studying in the library for an assignment due in.
He’d glance at you from the corner of his eyes, finding it hard to concentrate when you were right there, sitting next to him, close to him.
Merlin he’d be a mess, shifting in his seat, incessantly tapping his quill and making countless spelling mistakes.
You’d be aware of it all, trying not to react in case it made him more nervous, but it would be getting ridiculous.
He’d only be nervous around you at certain times and you couldn’t understand why, or what was so important about those times.
You’d get his attention by staring at him, waiting for him to explain himself.
“What?”
He’d barely be able to hold eye contact until you said his name softer than anyone had said it before, at which point he’d be caught in a stare.
“Rem, I’m going to do something, okay?”
He’d simply nod, wishing it might be what he’d been trying to do for weeks now.
You’d lean in close, looking him in the eye and then darting down to his lips. You’d wet yours with your tongue before looking him in the eye again.
Remus would keep eye contact, afraid that if he looked away he might wake up from a dream.
Your lips would be soft against his, and immediately his hands would cup your jaw, bringing your closer and falling in deeper.
His eyebrows would scrunch together as his lips moved against yours, and even after he pulled away.
Remus wouldn’t be able to wipe the smile from his face as he walked into the dorm he shared with James, Sirius and Peter.
He wouldn’t be able to get the feeling of you out of his head the whole way there.
“So you did it then?”
“Actually, they did.”
James would groan loudly, pushing his face into his pillow while Sirius laughed heartily.
“Pay up, fool.”
Still planted into his pillow, James would slam his hand down on the table beside his bed and throw some money at Sirius.
Sirius Black ;
Sirius would be a wreck for days; he couldn’t understand what he was feeling and wouldn’t given himself enough time to figure it out.
If he ignored it, it might go away.
But you wouldn’t.
It took him some time to realise that the feeling was attached to you, like invisible string had tied his heart around your finger.
He’d kissed people before, sure, but he couldn’t even imagine what it would feel like to kiss you—he was almost afraid.
He’d have half a mind to bury the feeling and you along with it, friendship gone and forgotten about.
But he couldn’t do that, he wanted you too much. He needed you.
Out in the courtyard was where he’d asked you to meet him via a little note beside your bed.
He’d wait there, pacing back and forth and then sitting down while his leg bobbed up and down.
He wouldn’t hear you approach, his thoughts too thunderous to hear anything outside of them.
The tap on his shoulder would startle him, until he realised it was you.
He’d try to talk, to explain things and what was going on with him and why things seemed different.
In fact, you’d be surprised Sirius wanted to meet you anywhere, he’d been oddly distant lately, but not in a cruel way.
Almost in a way that suggested he was frightened.
He’d sigh, “You know I can’t talk about things.”
He’d link his pinky with yours, looking down to the stone pavement you were standing on.
You’d reach up and brush the hair from his face, smiling up encouragingly.
He wouldn’t be able to take it anymore—you were so gentle, so patient and he needed to tell you, or show you.
He’d lean in quickly, his lips just skimming yours, but he’d wait there, close and asking.
When you didn’t move, he’d close that extra inch, gliding his lips over yours almost desperately.
His hands would roam from your waist, up your back and along your jaw, aching to just hold you.
He knew then that the feeling would never go away, but he wouldn’t mind it so much anymore.
Lily Evans ;
It wouldn’t even be a thought for Lily, it would probably happen by accident.
You’d be sitting against a tree on the grounds of Hogwarts, reading or just talking and soaking in the sun.
You’d have said something funny, something that made Lily laugh more than she had done in a while.
She’d turn her head against the tree trunk and watch you laugh and how there were crinkles beside your eyes.
She’d watch how your cheeks plumped as your smiled stretched further.
After a minute, her smile would fade as she continued to stare at you as if the world was about to implode and she had to look at you and memorise everything before it was too late.
It was intense, she could feel it in her stomach, her heart. But she’d push it down when you looked at her, careful not to reveal everything too soon.
And when your eyes met hers, she’d just…kiss you, like it was the most normal thing to do in the world.
It felt like it was, but it also felt new and exciting—a rush would wash over her, making he slightly dizzy.
She was drunk with the thought and feel of you.
It would be a quick reciprocation from you after you realised what was happening.
Your hands would tangle into her brazen hair, and for that moment on a sunny day under the cover of green leaves, everything would be utterly perfect.
Lily would smile against your lips, unable to hold in the happiness she was feeling that it was all real.
Resting her forehead on yours, she’d sigh contently, and you’d stay that way for a minute or two, just soaking up the image of each other.
The wind would pick up, blowing a strand of hair across Lily’s eyes, so you’d brush it away, tucking it behind her ear.
Taking the opportunity, you’d kiss her cheek, slowly moving across to her nose and back down to her lips where you’d give her a quick peck.
Lily would laugh, eliciting your laugh once more before she pulled you flush against her and dropped to the soft grass below.
Marlene Mckinnon ;
Marlene would know she liked you pretty quickly. She’d know herself and what she wanted.
And oddly enough, for Marlene, it would be harder to approach the subject than she thought.
Usually she’d have no problems going after what she wanted, but with you she seemed to stumble a little bit more.
Instead of looking or trying to create the perfect moment or the perfect way to ask you out or kiss you, she’d decide just to wait and see what happened.
When the right moment came to her, she’d know.
It would probably just be a normal evening, just you and her talking together in your dorm or the common room.
No one else would be around, which both you and Marlene would always take advantage of when it happened.
She’d be watching you talk rather than listening.
How your mouth moved and how sometimes, when you weren’t sure how to put your thoughts into words, you’d bite your lip.
How your hands moved with the plot of the story, signalling when you were happy, angry or for an action of something you were describing.
You’d probably catch yourself, realising Marlene wasn’t really paying attention and apologising for talking too much.
Marlene would laugh, telling you there was no such thing and encouraging you to carry on.
And she’d realise right there, that it was the moment she’d been waiting for.
She’d been sat admiring you and almost didn’t notice how perfect the moment was to finally kiss you.
“Y/N.”
It would sound soft, almost lazy, and you’d immediately quieten down, staring at Marlene who’d just interrupted you.
“I really want to kiss you.”
Completely dumbfounded, you wouldn’t know what to do or say, but you were sure that when you looked back you’d know exactly what you should have done.
Marlene would lean in to see what you thought, since there was no response that indicated a mutual feeling or rejection.
You’d stay impossibly still, worried you might do something wrong otherwise.
But she’d hesitate, just for a moment, questioning whether she was doing the right thing.
And the idea of a future where she hadn’t kissed you then wasn’t something you wanted to bring into reality.
And that’d be how you knew that you wanted it to, and knowing exactly what to do, you’d lean in quickly and capture your lips with hers.
Regulus Black ;
There wouldn’t be any admittance to feelings before your first kiss.
Regulus would be sceptical, cautious to enter into a relationship, especially when he didn’t know if he would be able to be there for you the way you deserved.
He’d be used to you finding him in the Astronomy Tower, tucked away from humanity and left with his own mind—for better or for worse.
Usually your presence would be a welcome comfort, unless things were particularly bad, at which point you knew to leave.
But it would be a time for you and Regulus to just be you, to share deep and dark secrets or laugh at something that had happened in class.
It would serve as a sanctuary for whatever you needed, so it was fitting that your first kiss would take place there.
In a place you’d learn to call yours together with Regulus.
You’d probably approach him on a particularly bad night, but he wouldn’t send you away.
He thought by doing that, he’d only allow for damaging, cursed thoughts to fill his mind and taint his heart, corrupting him from within.
Your company would ease it all, slow it down if anything. It would provide light and safety in places where the shadows couldn’t reach.
At this point, Regulus would glance at you, how the wind caused the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up, how it bit at your skin, but that you still wore a gentle smile upon your face.
He’d realise that every night you spent up in the tower alone with him, paved a path from his heart to yours—he’d know that they’d finally met.
He’d finally realise that he had no expectations to live up to, no one that he had to be but himself; you’d willingly spent your nights with him, not just to wallow or brood but to laugh and talk about yourselves.
After admiring you both in memory and in the present, Regulus would place his hand over yours that rested on the railings.
It would be cold from the night air, but it wouldn’t matter to him.
You’d look up to Regulus, the person you’d given up countless nights for, just to be with him because you couldn’t think of a better excuse not to sleep.
He’d look at you differently, not like he ever had before and it was send waves of butterflies to the pit of your stomach.
He’d lean in slowly, whispering your name as if it was a question, waiting for your response in the quiet night.
It wouldn’t be an audible answer, but rather shown in movement as your face inched closer to his before finally your lips met in a slow and tender kiss.
His hands would cup your face, bringing you impossibly close, wishing for you never to leave.
But you would, your lips would part and a smile would break out over them, just like it would on Regulus’—mirrored emotion speaking words better than either of you could have formed them.
You could still vividly remember the first time you met Sirius Black.
Boarding the train to Hogwarts the first time, you managed to find a compartment with your brother, Remus, before it was descended upon by two rowdy boys with large grins.
James Potter and Sirius Black had, with no hesitation, introduced themselves to you and you quickly became friends, especially when you pulled your money together and bought a various selection of chocolates from the trolley. When the sorting hat placed all of you in Gryffindor, it only reaffirmed your friendship.
It wasn't just the four of you in your little group though, the boys were placed in a dormitory with another boy, Peter, and you shared a dorm with two other girls who also became fierce friends of yours; Lily Evans and Marlene McKinnon.
Of course, growing up together through Hogwarts had it's arguments and fall outs, though somehow you always seemed to remain friends.
It wasn't until your seventh, and final year of Hogwarts did the surprising pair of Lily and James get together which solidified your friendship group even further. Between Sirius and you, the bet you had made in your fourth year regarding when the pair would get together, finally came to an end where you had happily took your winnings with a smile and paid for a bottle of Firewhiskey to celebrate.
After graduating, you ended up moving in with Marlene, finding a perfect two bedroom flat for you to share, close to Diagon Alley. The boys had taken a page from your book with Sirius using some of his inheritance from his great uncle and buying a flat directly across the Leaky Cauldron.
Whilst he had invited Peter to also live with him and Remus, the boy politely refused with the intention to stay with his parents for a while.
James however, had asked Lily to move in with him almost the second they graduated and the pair had moved to a little cottage in Godric’s Hollow. It wasn’t long afterwards that James had proposed to Lily which led to the current series of events.
About an hour before, you and Marlene had walked down the aisle in the gardens of Potter Manor in your bridesmaids dresses, while Lily had donned a white dress and followed you. Standing opposite your brother and Sirius, the latter caught your eye when your friends said their wedding vows.
With a wink, Sirius had your attention and you weren't exactly sure what it was that felt different, but something definitely did.
As the reception started, you watched Lily and James take some of their wedding photos together. The smile on your face was something you couldn't help as Remus appeared at your side, a similar expression on his own face.
"Remember when Lily hexed James so hard he vomited out of his nose because he proposed to her?"
"I'm pretty sure it made him like her even more to be honest, James is weird like that." You snickered, accepting the drink from your brother. "Who would've thought we'd be here not even four years later?"
"Tell me about it. If you plan on getting married anytime soon though, please give me some warning." Remus joked, nudging his shoulder against yours.
"I think I need to actually date someone before I marry them, but thanks for being so optimistic about my dating life." You grinned at him before seeing Sirius making his way over to the two of you.
"Well well, if it isn't the Lupin twins." Sirius laid an arm over both your shoulders. "How long do you reckon it'll be before Lily's creepy uncle makes a move on Marlene?"
"At least after two more drinks." Remus chuckled. "Which reminds me, I promised I'd save her from any men tonight who wanted to dance with her that, and I quote, looked like they had to use a stamina charm in bed."
"Good luck with that." You snickered, waving your brother off as he disappeared in the direction of the blonde.
Sirius didn't say anything else as he took a seat at one of the tables and pulled you down into his lap. It wasn't uncommon for the two of you to hug or cuddle, having done so numerous times in the Gryffindor common room, much to Remus' annoyance. This only really resulted in Sirius being more affectionate.
Being twins, the two of you were naturally closer than normal siblings which resulted in Remus being protective over you since the only blood family you both had left was each other. Your parents, especially your father, had grown fearsome and disgusted at what Remus was, despite it not being his fault when Greyback bit him all those years ago. Your father began to resent you after you constantly took Remus' side and played his constant advocate.
"Hey, what're you thinking about?" Sirius nudged you, grabbing your attention. His expression was unreadable as he watched you watch Lily and James interact with each other.
"I don't know, it's nothing." Sirius nudged you again, looking for a proper answer. "I look at them and I just wonder if I'll ever have that, you know? Someone who looks at you like you're their whole world."
Sirius didn't say anything at first, but pulled you closer. He wouldn't admit it but he often had the same thought cross his mind.
"You'll find them."
"Are they fucking hiding from me?!"
"If they've already met you, then probably."
Smacking his chest, you couldn't help the contagious laughter that bubbled from you, echoing that from the wizard.
"Being serious though," Sirius grinned at the pun he just made, "who wouldn't want you?"
You smiled at him warmly, not knowing what to say. It wasn't often that Sirius was, well serious. The boy loved a joke, but he also loved his friends and knew exactly what to say to them to cheer them up, especially you.
"Thanks, Siri."
"Hey, James and Lily are about to head off for their honeymoon." Remus said, knocking on Sirius' bedroom door at Potter Manor, stepping inside to see Sirius rush back out from the ensuite bathroom only in his shirt and boxers. "What happened to you? You disappeared from the reception."
"Uh, dropped cake down myself, had to come and change." Sirius told him quickly.
"You do realise you're a wizard right? You could've just vanished the mess?"
"Ah yeah, of course, how stupid, sure could've. Anyway, I just need to put on some clean trousers and I'll be right down."
Remus frowned. Something was off but he couldn't work out what it was. Putting it down to Sirius drinking too much, he waved the man off, exiting the room.
"Alright well, hurry down, James was asking for you."
Remus exited the room and Sirius quickly closed the door behind him. Turning back to the bathroom, he watched as you opened the door with a tentative expression, trying to zip your dress back up but failing.
"Do you think he knew I was here?"
"Don't think so, here, turn around, I'll do it." Sirius turned you around, quickly zipping up your dress before resting his hands on your waist. "So, we haven't done that before."
"That is correct."
It was slightly awkward between the two of you, why was it awkward? Oh, maybe because you were both fucking like rabbits not even moments before your brother knocked on the door. It had never been awkward between you before though and you didn't like it.
"Why is it so awkward?" Sirius chuckled as you spun around before him.
"Right! It's like I don't know what to say!"
"We're just two friends who've had sex one time, there doesn't have to be anything awkward about that!"
"Exactly, it doesn't have to be a big deal, it was a one time thing, we can just go back to the party and no one will know!"
"Yes, good plan, lets go!" Turning towards the door, Sirius started towards it with a new determination, completely forgetting one issue.
"Sirius?" He paused, looking back at you, "maybe you should put on some trousers before we go down though."
"Good idea."
Waving James and Lily off, you stood alongside the rest of your friends as Marlene appeared, pulling you towards her by your waist.
"Ugh, please tell me we're going to get some good booze and continue to get fucked up at ours?"
"Is that an open invite?" Remus asked with a grin, "Think I spied an extra bottle of Firewhiskey knocking about near the top table."
"100%," Marlene grinned at him, "after all, it's the least I could do after you saved me from so many creeps tonight. I will thank you in the form of hosting a small afterparty with the inner circle. Right, Y/N?"
"I'm up for it, I'll go see if I can grab that extra bottle you mentioned."
Taking off towards the top table, your eyes scanned the tables one by one until you felt a presence behind you. Already knowing who it was, you didn't bother looking back at them.
"I've got a fresh bottle stashed under my bed upstairs if we wanna grab that one?" Sirius said lowly in your ear.
"That sounds like a plan," you said slowly, "though I thought we said it was only a one time thing?"
"Weddings don't count, right? I swear that's a rule somewhere."
"...How long do you think we can be before the others get suspicious?"
"10 minutes?"
"Sounds good, lets go."
The pair of you said nothing more the entire night on the matter and ended up just having a good time with your friends. The boys ended up sleeping on your sofas, not trusting themselves to apparate safely considering the amount they each had to drink.
It wasn't until mid morning when everyone started to rouse, that you offered to make everyone a cup of tea to help with the hangovers that had started to form.
"Hey, make mine extra strong, will you?"
You laughed, turning to face Sirius.
"You need the caffeine that much?"
"That answer is a strong yes."
Pouring the boiling water into the mugs, you passed Sirius' over to him as he smiled at you in thanks.
"So, yesterday was something." You smiled, taking a sip of your own drink.
"Yeah... something stupid, right?"
"Yeah, totally stupid." There was a brief silence between you as you weren't exactly sure what to say next. "Look as much as I enjoyed it, I don't want us to become awkward or ruin our friendship or anything because of it."
"Good, because I was going to say the same thing." Sirius nodded, leaning against the kitchen counter top. "As good as the sex was, and trust me it was good, it's not worth making our friendship awkward or anything not knowing where we stand with the other."
"Right, yes, that makes a lot of sense." You both took another sip of tea as you listened to Marlene and Remus in the living room laugh about something. "Unless... wait no, it's nothing."
"No, what it is?" Sirius asked.
"Unless... I don't know, we keep fucking in secret and just don't tell the others?"
You stared at the tea in your cup before raising your eyes to meet Sirius' grey ones which were wide, a grin on his face.
"I guess that would work too?"
"Yeah... anyway on a totally unrelated note, Marlene's visiting her family tomorrow night at like 7."
"Noted."
"Where's my bloody tea, Y/N!" The blonde in question strode into the kitchen sluggishly. "I swear you've been in here for 4 hours making it."
"If you were a little more patient, Mar, I was just about to bring it out for you." You rolled your eyes but handed the mug over to her anyway.
"Thanks, how're you two feeling this morning?"
"Rough." Sirius grunted out as the three of you headed back into the living room. "But what's new there, really?!"
"You should really try cut back on your drinking, Pads." Remus mentioned, taking the cup of tea from you with a smile.
"You should cut back on your chocolate."
"Chocolate doesn't give you hangovers." Remus countered with a smirk causing Sirius to just roll his eyes as he sunk down into an armchair.
"Either way, I hope Lils and James are having fun." Marlene stretched out on the other sofa, placing her legs over your own. "I know James will be with the things Y/N and I packed as a surprise in Lily's bags."
You snorted into your cup as you remembered the countless lacy items you'd snuck into Lily's normally conservative wardrobe.
"Well, James might be happy about what you packed, but he certainly won't be happy with what we packed." Sirius snickered as Remus held back a laugh.
"What did you do?!"
"We might've exchanged his entire bag of clothes for an entire bag of Cornish Pixies." Sirius grinned. "I'm already expecting a howler from Lily at some point in the near future."
Sirius didn’t have to wait long for Lily’s reaction as only moments later he heard an angry shout through his two way mirror he shared with James.
As planned, Marlene visited her family the next day and no later after she flooed away, Sirius appeared at the front door of your flat. The same happened after Marlene was picked by Dumbledore for an order mission and Sirius happily flooed into your flat only moments later. You were convinced he’d bugged your flat somehow.
James and Lily returned from their honeymoon a week later, effectively surprising you as they flooed into your flat with no warning, causing you to stuff a naked Sirius into your closet. It was safe to say he wasn’t impressed after Lily insisted she make a pot of tea to ‘catch up’, and ended up staying round for several hours.
You barely managed to hide the snicker which escaped your lips when James asked if you knew where Sirius was.
With the newly married pair being back, the two of you decided to come up with a plan as how to sneak around without the others knowing.
Somehow, it didn’t really go to plan.
Sirius insisted that you should come over and take a bath with him one night, especially as Remus was due to be out. You couldn’t help but agree to the idea, mostly because you got to spend time with your very sexy male friend who looked very good in bubbles... and also the fact his bathtub was a lot better than your own.
The bathtub in question was a massive claw-foot tub which could fit the two of you and your two roommates if you so desired. Compared against the shitty little tub Marlene and you had in your flat, it was a no brainer.
Which is why as you sat in between Sirius’ legs, your back against his chest, you couldn’t help but feel more relaxed than you had done all week.
Sirius was leant back against the tub, his arm around your waist with a glass of Firewhiskey in his other hand. The two of you had nicked this particular bottle from James’ ‘secret stash’ which everyone knew he hid under his cloak, under the stairs. It was all too easy for the two of you to sneak in and borrow it for the time being.
“You know, Prongs must be real blind if he can’t see how many people actually know about his hiding spots.” You snickered as you took the glass from Sirius and took a sip.
“I think it might be all the brain damage after getting hit in the head so many times.” He grinned.
“How long do you think it’ll be until he notices the actual bottle being gone? A few days?”
“Give him some credit, it’ll be at least a week.”
The two of you chuckled before you heard the fireplace roar with flames. Footsteps quickly made their way towards Sirius’ room before heading towards the bathroom.
A panicked look between the two of you was exchanged as a knock was heard on the door.
“Pads? It’s me, I’m coming in.”
Sirius quickly took the glass of Firewhiskey back from you as you dived underwater, praying the bubbles would cover up the fact you were there.
The door opened and James stepped in about to say something, before he stopped and observed the scene before him. Sirius was sat covered in bubbles with candles lit around him. Despite the calm expression on his face, the fact you were lying between his legs in the water had his heart racing.
“Did you need something, Prongs?”
“Uh, yeah, have you seen the bottle of Firewhiskey which I was given as a gift for my wedding?” James asked, very obviously looking at the opened bottle on the side of the bath.
“Didn’t even know you got given one, mate. This was from Y/N.”
“And if I ask her, will she give me the same story?”
“Positively. Anything else?”
“Yeah, you want to order some Chinese?”
“I mean I- NO!”
His outburst was a surprise to both James and himself after you had pinched him underwater signalling you were running out of air.
“Really? Lily’s got me on this diet and-”
“James! Get out!”
“Fine! Okay! No need to shout at me, I’ve seen you in weirder scenarios.”
James left and shut the door behind him just as soon as you jolted up, gasping for breath.
“I’m sorry, he wouldn’t leave! He wanted to ask me if I fancied some Chinese.”
“Chinese?” You asked, turning to look at him over your shoulder with a contemplative look on your face. “I could go for some chow mein.”
“Prongs!” Taking a deep breath, you disappeared underwater again just before James appeared once more. “I’ll have a large chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, some of those prawn cracker things and the spring rolls.”
“Spring rolls? I swear only Y/N likes them.”
“Thought I’d try them out since as she’s always yapping on about them.”
“Alright, back in a bit.”
James left and shut the door again. You emerged from the water, leaning back on Sirius again as he relayed off what he’d ordered.
“You ordered me spring rolls?!”
“Yeah, I remembered you liked them.” Sirius shrugged, wrapping his arm around your waist again. “Even if they taste like arse.”
The group had gathered at Marlene and Y/N’s for an evening where despite Lily’s constant health kicks, she relented into ordering pizza for the group.
“Hey, you guys will never guess what I found out today.” Marlene grinned.
“You’re secretly a guy?” Sirius snickered from the armchair, only to receive a cushion being thrown at his face by the blonde.
“No,” Marlene scowled at him, “Alice and Frank got engaged!”
“What?! How’d you find out?” Lily asked as she cuddled up to James in the other armchair.
“I ran into Alice at Headquarters earlier and she showed me her ring.” Marlene leant back into the sofa as she brought her legs up to lay them over Remus’ lap. “We best be getting ready for another wedding soon.”
“I’m sure we’ll hear more at the meeting tomorrow.” James said grinning. “Who knew Longbottom had it in him?!”
“Alice certainly did.” You snickered, leaning onto Remus’ other shoulder. The comment got another round of chuckles from everyone present as Lily shot you a less than impressed look.
“Alright, I say let’s call it a night if we have to be at the meeting early tomorrow morning.” The redhead rolled her eyes at you all before standing up and brushing her dress down.
Everyone else seemed to follow her lead as Marlene and you stood to show everyone out.
“Yeah, I need to sleep as much as I can with Moony’s snoring keeping me up all night.” Sirius grinned, stepping up beside you and Remus.
What no one expected to happen was for Sirius to dip and find your lips in a kiss, his hand wrapping around the back of your neck to pull you closer, just as he had done for the last few weeks.
The rest of the group stood with slack jaws as they took in the scene before them as they watched Sirius kiss you. Pulling away, you caught each other’s eyes as realisation set in and your own eyes went wide.
“Marls,” Sirius shook off his slight hesitation before heading straight over to Marlene and pulling her in for a kiss of her own. “Lily.”
Stepping forward to give Lily a kiss goodbye, Sirius couldn’t help but notice the wide eyed look from both James at kissing his wife and Remus at kissing his sister.
“Pleasure to spend time with you all.” Sirius grinned at everyone’s expressions before entering the fireplace to floo back to his own flat.
“What the hell was that?!” Remus asked with wide eyes, securely on you.
“Probably some leftover greeting from Lily and James’ wedding. Lils did have some french cousins, perhaps he picked it up from them?” You chuckled, trying to play down the laugh you so wanted to let out.
“Yeah, it did feel french.” Marlene snickered. “I’m not sure if I feel happy about saying that I’ve kissed Sirius Black though.”
“Well, he can keep his lips to himself and not on my wife.” James scowled at the fireplace where Sirius had disappeared moments before.
We're the black sheep
Chapter Four
Words count: 3.6k
Finally something serious is happening between Y/n and Sirius.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
Circe was sitting on one of the black leather sofas in the Slytherin common room, casually doing her homework, when [Y/n] entered the room. The girls looked at each other, Circe noticed the bandage on her friend's arm.
"What happened?" Circe asked.
[Y/n] sat down on the sofa next to her. She told her everything that happened during and after the try-outs. Of course, she couldn't skip the part where she dueled Sirius Black. And the fact that they got detention. Together.
"Detention with Black? Oh, Merlin!" the tone of Circe's voice showed that she was rather excited by this news, "That's awesome! I'm sorry about your arm though."
"Awesome? That's terrible!" [Y/n] yelled dramatically.
Then Regulus walked into the common room. His ears caught [Y/n]'s yell, but hearing people yell in there wasn't something unusual. The question was, what could be terrible? The school year has just started and something happened already?
"What's so terrible, that you have to let even people outside know about it?" he asked with a bit of confusion in his voice.
"I got detention with your bloody brother."
"Oh fuck. Hey, look, the giant squid is here again." Regulus pointed at the glass ceiling. It was such a Slytherin thing to suddenly get distracted by the squid swimming by. A nightmare for students who were scared of squids though. Or water. The common room of Slytherin was a little scary with its glass ceiling, it was better to not look up if you got scared easily.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
"Wait, Sirius, where are you going?" [Y/n] asked, running after Sirius. The date went well, sure, but one thing the girl didn't know until now about her boyfriend was that it was all a bet. A stupid bet he had with his friends.
They were dating for a few weeks, [Y/n] finally managed to sort out her feelings. One day after lessons, she managed to tell the first 'I love you' to Sirius, expecting him to say the same. But he didn't. They were sitting under a tree, he stood up and looked at [Y/n], then started laughing. It wasn't a good kind of laugh. He was laughing AT her. For admitting her feelings. For expressing them.
"I need to tell the boys," he said, walking to where James, Peter and Remus stood, "James owes me five galleons."
"What? Sirius, what do you mean?" [Y/n] cried. That was the first time she cried in public. Tears. The sign of weakness. Whether happy or sad, tears mean you're weak. And she showed Sirius her weak side. Damn, she showed her weak side to all the people around them.
"James said I won't make you fall for me, I said five galleons that I will. Did you think I could actually like you? Please, you're so pathetic, I hate people like you. I would never even talk to you if it wasn't for a bet."
"But Sirius, I... I..." she couldn't manage to cough up any more words. She was left, just standing there. Confused. Humiliated. Heartbroken. Sirius humiliated her in front of everybody, soon the whole school will talk about how he managed to play with [Y/n] Hannigan's feelings. The Slytherin princess got her heart broken by a Gryffindor blood traitor, people won't forget about it, they'll make fun of her for the rest of her time at Hogwarts.
[Y/n] woke up with tears in her eyes. Thankfully it was only a bad dream, but she still felt...hurt? Why would she be hurt about it? She didn't care about Sirius, she didn't care if he had feelings for her because she didn't have feelings for him, right? They aren't even going on a date nor they ever will. Gross. Sure, [Y/n] felt tingling inside her stomach sometimes when she thought about Sirius, since about the end of the fourth year, but it couldn't be the whole 'love' thing. She forgot about it during summer. Looking at her parents, [Y/n] questioned if love even existed, it could be just a thing made up for stories parents read to their children.
[Y/n] wiped away a few tears and got out of her bed. She decided to dress up already since it was 10am. As she looked at a clock on the dorm's wall, she remembered about the detention. It was starting in an hour. That's enough time to dress up and eat breakfast.
Since it was a Saturday, the school uniform wasn't necessary, so [Y/n] wore some casual clothes. She chose a dark green plaid skirt and a black short sleeved t-shirt plus some black shoes [or just imagine some different outfit, it isn't very important for the plot lol]. On her neck [Y/n] wore a small raven necklace. That felt casual for her. Everything that isn't a school uniform feels casual, honestly.
Once the girl changed from pajamas, her next destination was the Great Hall, for breakfast. She woke up later than on a school day, nobody else was in the dorm so others probably ate the breakfast already. In the common room, Circe and Owen stopped [Y/n].
"Oh, we were just about to go wake you up," the girl said, "we don't want you to be late for the date!"
"It's not a bloody date, Circe!" [Y/n] disclaimed. "It's a damn detention."
"We got you some pancakes from the Great Hall." Owen announced, taking out of his bag a few pancakes wrapped in some napkins.
"Whoa, thanks mate." [Y/n] took the pancakes from Owen's hands and sat down by a table they had in the common room.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
[Y/n] sighed on her way to professor Slughorn's classroom. She just wanted to get over with the detention as soon as possible, being stuck in a room with Sirius Black alone couldn't end up well. [Y/n] sighed even louder when she noticed Sirius walking up to her. He had his hair tied in a man bun.
"Morning, Hannigan!" he exclaimed. [Y/n], hearing his happy tone, rolled her eyes and said:
"Morning, Black."
"Are you ready for our day of fun?" Sirius smiled and ruffled her hair.
"Don't touch me," the girl moved away and tried to fix her hair, "what do you mean by a day? I wanna get out of there as soon as possible."
"Well, darling, you made us get detention so I thought you want to spend some time with me alone." His tone of voice was now less playful and more flirty. For a second [Y/n] thought he might like her, but then she remembered the dream she had. Of course she wasn't going to tell Sirius about it. She wasn't going to tell anyone about the dream.
"You wish, Black."
Their short conversation was cut off by professor Slughorn. He greeted them and explained what they had to do. Basically, they were supposed to look through all the ingredients and write down on a piece of paper, which ones Slughorn needs to stock up on.
About half an hour into detention, Sirius sat on one of the desks in the classroom. [Y/n] looked at him raising her eyebrows. She scoffed at him and thought 'don't make it harder, I'm already having a hard time'. Somehow, being alone with Sirius made [Y/n] accidentally drop things or almost trip over her own feet.
"You're adorkable." Sirius chuckled, watching [Y/n] trying to count some ingredients but failing and starting over for the third time.
"That's a stupid word. Shut up and help me." The girl scolded him as she was getting more and more annoyed each second.
"I've never seen you like this. All shy and awkward. What could be the reason, darling?"
"If we want to go out of here quicker, we have to finish quicker, which means you have to participate in that too."
Sirius chuckled and jumped off of the desk he sat on. Then he slowly walked closer to [Y/n]. She tried to not look at him and focus on the task they were supposed to be doing together, but Sirius stood really close to her. He put his hand on [Y/n]'s jaw and tilted her head to face him. He smirked and said:
"Maybe I don't want o get out of here quicker, hm? Maybe I want to spend more time with you?"
[Y/n] decided to say something she might regret later. Something that definitely made her question her sanity. If other students found out she said that, they would also question her sanity. But it didn't matter, there were people already thinking [Y/n] Hannigan is deranged.
"Well, then maybe you should ask me out on a date, you stupid git." She hissed.
It surprised Sirius. For the first time ever [Y/n] saw him, the infamous rebel of the Black family, not knowing what to say. He didn't look confused, though, and the smirk didn't leave his handsome face. Sirius looked into [Y/n]'s eyes and she looked into his, silence filling the room. The girl crossed her arms, faking confidence. At the moment, she didn't feel confident at all, but Sirius didn't need to know that. Fake it 'til you make it.
"You look like you're trying to read my mind." Sirius joked.
"Maybe I am." [Y/n] scoffed.
"You're not," the boy chuckled, "you wouldn't anyways, I'm an excellent Occulumens."
[Y/n] considered Sirius an interesting case. He seemed different now, she even felt a little intimidated by him. She started thinking that maybe each of Marauders has this side which shows up only when he isn't around his friends.
After that, they got back to the task. Sirius was counting the ingredients and telling [Y/n] how many of which ones there are while she wrote everything down on paper. It was much faster than the girl doing it alone, the detention ended in a blink of an eye. Sirius continued being his flirtatious self, while [Y/n] kept acting cold. It could be kind of weird since she asked Sirius to ask her out a few minutes earlier, but it's much easier to keep pretending she hates him because that's what they both did for the past few years, except that they weren't pretending for the first four years.
"Thank you very much," said the professor when detention ended, "two of my best students, unbelievable how much of troublemakers you are," he smiled, "I'll see you on Monday, have a nice day."
"Have a nice day." [Y/n] and Sirius replied in unison.
The two students walked out of the classroom. [Y/n] felt relieved but nervous, didn't quite understand why would she be nervous. She just wanted to disappear, but before she managed to walk away, Sirius grabbed her wrist and said:
"About the date, meet me tomorrow by the fountain at 5pm. If you don't show up, I'll myself drag you there."
He gave [Y/n] a smile and casually walked away without giving her any chance to say anything.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
[Y/n] walked to a pin board which was hanging by the entrance to the Great Hall. Quidditch teams of each house were to be announced there. Obviously she didn't expect herself to be on the list after what happened on the try-outs, but she was curious who's on the team this year. As she walked closer, she noticed Regulus reading the Slytherin list. Of course, he was the seeker also this year. That wasn't a surprise, he was a great player.
"Congrats, Reg!" [Y/n] said, giving her housemate a hug.
"Thank you, [Y/n]," the boy smiled slightly, "pity that you're not on the list."
"Owen couldn't choose me after everyone saw me having absolutely no control over my own broom," the girl explained sadly, "even though we both know who did it. I wish there was a way to prove it to others."
"Well, I hope you'll at least watch every match."
"Sure, no worries about that."
[Y/n] walked with Regulus back to their common room, where the boy asked her to help him with a homework he got on Potions. Not like he didn't know how to do it. Regulus just liked spending time with [Y/n]. The homework wasn't much of a problem to [Y/n] since she had the same thing last year. Plus she loved Potions. Next to Transfiguration, it was her favorite class.
"What are you guys up to?" Circe asked as she and Owen walked down from dormitories.
"Oh, we're just working on a plan to conquer the world." Regulus replied sarcastically.
Owen chuckled and said:
"How about you leave the plan for now and go to Hogsmeade with us?"
[Y/n] and Regulus nodded, so the four of friends walked to the village. On the way to Hogsmeade, they walked past the Marauders. Surprisingly, they weren't up to many mischief. 'Quite weird' [Y/n] thought, when none of the boys tried to annoy her and her friends. [Y/n]'s [y/e/c] eyes locked with Sirius' grey ones for a few seconds but the girl quickly looked away.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
[Y/n], Circe, Regulus and Owen walked inside the Three Broomsticks. Madam Rosmerta greeted them with a smile, her blonde locks framing her quite good-looking face. She gave a hug to the girls and shook hands with the boys. They were one of her favorite customers because of big tips they always used to give.
They chose their usual table. They liked it because it was a little further from the other ones. Since it was a Saturday, the bar was almost full and the four friends wanted to talk about something private.
"What you looking at?" [Y/n] asked, feeling her friends' gaze on her.
"We just..." Owen started, "we wanted to talk about your brother."
[Y/n] looked at her friends, chewing on a salad she ordered. Owen had some chicken, as well as Regulus, while Circe was eating some fish dish.
"We think he might be a death eater." Circe whispered so that nobody outside the table could hear her.
"What? Why?" [Y/n]'s eyes widened. Not like it was unexpected. At home Cieran often used to talk about wanting to serve Lord Voldemort so at some point [Y/n] knew she had to be prepared for that. But he was a coward, so it was still quite surprising information.
"Notice how he always wears long sleeves-" the blonde boy pointed out.
"Ah, yes, because we live in Africa so long sleeved shirts are confusing."
"Let me finish, will you? Once I saw his sleeve lift up a little and I think I saw the dark mark."
"Oh well." She took another bite of her salad because she had no idea how to react. She felt angry at Cieran for doing it but she couldn't do anything about it, could she? He wouldn't listen to her no matter how many times she told him pureblood supremacy sucks. Plus she would get disowned by her parents if she ever said that. As she thought about it deeper, a sad frown appeared on her face.
"Why are you sad?" Circe asked. Sometimes people could forget [Y/n] was against the whole pureblood supremacy thing. All Slytherins were perceived as people who were into dark arts, wanted to serve Lord Voldemort, didn't like muggles and muggleborns.
"Maybe because my brother's a death eater?" [Y/n] hissed at her friend.
"Why are you even in Slytherin?" Owen laughed. His comment angered [Y/n] more, so she hit the back of his head with her right hand.
"That's why." Regulus laughed slightly.
After the four friends finished eating, they stayed a little longer just to talk. [Y/n] secretly bribed Madam Rosmerta so that she would give them some firewhisky.
Circe changed the topic of the conversation to [Y/n]'s recent detention. Everyone was so curious how she managed to spend a few hours alone with Regulus' brother. And how come nobody got hurt. [Y/n] told her friends about how the detention went. Regulus didn't know about her feelings for his brother, so he was quite surprised when [Y/n] mentioned the date.
"My idiot brother asked you on a date?" He had a bit shocked expression on his face.
"Wrong," Owen raised a finger, "she told him to take her on a date, so theoretically she asked your brother out."
"That's even worse! [Y/n], you're mental." Regulus' voice got louder.
"Calm down, Reggie." [Y/n] said when she noticed some people looking at them.
"No! I thought you hated Sirius!"
Regulus stood up and walked out of the Three Bromsticks in a quick pace. [Y/n], Circe and Owen gave confused looks to one another.
"Mr anger issues," chuckled Owen.
"It wasn't the best idea to give firewhisky to a fourteen year old." Circe's voice was worried.
"No shit, Sherlock."
"I'll talk to him," [Y/n] said, "don't wait for us, we'll go back to the castle."
[Y/n] stood up from the table and walked out of the bar. Regulus was on the way back to Hogwarts, so [Y/n] ran up to him. He stopped but refused to look at her.
"Regulus..." The girl whispered. After a few seconds, the boy looked at her. It was getting dark outside but tears strolling down his cheeks were visible.
"He's a blood traitor." He muttered through clenched teeth.
"His beliefs are right."
"No matter how many times you'll say it, he'll always be a blood traitor."
Regulus sat down on a bench and so did [Y/n]. She sat close to him so that she could pull him into a hug whether he liked it or not. He looked like he needed a hug, even though physical touch wasn't much of a Regulus thing.
"He'll take you from me," Regulus said but then corrected himself, "I mean us. Us as me, Circe and Owen."
"He won't, " [Y/n] reassured as she loosened the hug, "you will still be my friends."
After having this short conversation, [Y/n] offered to go back to the castle. Regulus nodded, he thought it might be a good idea, so they walked there. He was still angry, but didn't want to show it. He felt jealous and was scared that Sirius will change [Y/n] and make her unfriend him.
Somewhere on one of Hogwarts' corridors, they encountered the Marauders. Regulus cursed under his breath and started walking faster.
"Slytherin princess!" rang in [Y/n]'s ears. She turned around and walked up to the boys she hated, while her friend disappeared walking down the stairs on his way back to the Slytherin common room.
"Life was beautiful when I wasn't near your arrogant arse, Potter." [Y/n] hissed, looking straight into the boy's hazel eyes.
"Says who?" James and his friends laughed.
"Shut the hell up. What do you want?"
"Can we talk face to face?"
"If we have to." The girls sighed and walked with James about fifteen feet away.
"Sirius seriously likes you," he said, "I don't know how but he's always had a weird taste."
"Where is this conversation going?" [Y/n] looked visibly annoyed.
"If you hurt him," James put his pointing finger up to [Y/n]'s chin, "I, Remus and Peter will make you wish you've never met him."
"Don't touch me, Potter." The girl tried to bite the boy's finger but he put it down just in time.
"You're insane." James chuckled and smiled, rather to himself than to [Y/n] as she gave him a passive-aggressive smile.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
[Y/n] walked back to her common room. There were a few people. Circe and Owen weren't back yet and Regulus was in the dorm already. [Y/n] sat down on one of the armchairs and looked up at the glass ceiling. Several thoughts were rushing through her head. It was only the beginning of the school year and so much happened already. Merlin knows what will the rest of the year bring, but [Y/n] was indeed excited to find out. Also, she felt a little excited about tomorrow's date. Since James had such a serious conversation with her, it must mean that Sirius' intentions were positive, right? Or the both of them could be dragging [Y/n] into another prank of theirs.
"Don't worry."
The girl jumped a little when she suddenly heard a voice she didn't recognize at first. She looked at the sofa next to her armchair to see Severus Snape.
"What?" [Y/n] asked as she looked around to make sure he spoke to her. She barely knew him despite the fact that they were housemates. Honestly not many Slytherins talked to Severus, he was usually seen around Lily Evans - the girl James Potter fancied.
"Yes, I'm talking to you, Hannigan," Severus said as if he read her mind, "thinking about Black, weren't you? The Gryffindor one I mean."
"Yeah," [Y/n] admitted, then added, "thanks to him I'm not on the team this year. Bloody git."
"Quidditch isn't even that interesting after all."
"Why did you tell me not to worry?"
"Because he does like you back." The left corner of Severus' lips raised. [Y/n] opened her mouth and put her hand on it.
"You're a Legillimens." She said and her housemate nodded casually. She understood that he read Sirius' mind. Just one thing didn't add up. "But Black is an Occulumens, how did you manage to read his mind?"
"It was difficult," Severus admitted, "let's say I was really bored."
[Y/n] smirked. She was glad that Severus decided to help her, even if it was unintentional or he was into it just for the drama. At least now the girl knew Sirius' true feelings. Both legillimency and occulumency were useful skills, [Y/n] hoped to learn them too eventually. Her brother was actually supposed to teach her but he seemed to never have the time to do it.
“I can’t believe you’ve never let us visit before!”
“He’s been keeping the muggles all to himself, I tell you.”
“The height of betrayal!”
Remus rolled his eyes at his ridiculous friends as they strolled down the main road of the quaint village near his family’s house, feeling lazy and languid with the summer sun beating down on them.
“Muggles are brilliant,” James stated, his voice full of wonder as he stared with open fascination at everything there was to see. “I mean, look, look!” He stopped to point at the window of an appliance store, and Sirius peeked curiously over his shoulder, “What even is that?”
“It’s a dishwasher, James,” Remus patiently informed him.
“Wow… Brilliant, I tell you! The things muggles invent!”
“James!” Remus admonished as James’ voice had been rising to a shout, “Keep it down! What was rule #3 when I said you could visit?”
James looked back at him sheepishly and the three boys recited the third rule Remus had laid out in his last letter to them.
“‘Don’t break the International Statute of Secrecy and force the Ministry to obliviate my neighbours,’” they quoted in chorus.
“That’s right,” Remus nodded, “Now behave or I won’t show you the toy store.”
“No, ” Peter whined, “I want to find out what a kazoo is!”
James blinked at Peter, then leaned in to Sirius to ask under his breath, “The bloody hell is a kazoo?”
“Merlin if I know,” Sirius shrugged, “Wormtail?”
“I just said I don’t know!”
“We’ll be good, Moony,” Sirius said to Remus with an angelic smile as they set off again down the street, “Don’t worry.”
There were a lot of things Remus had worried about when James had insisted he, Sirius, and Peter were coming to stay at the Lupin’s for a week in August, but getting into trouble wasn’t one of them; he knew it would happen regardless. Remus was more concerned about Sirius. More specifically, his inescapable feelings for Sirius.
Something had changed over the course of their sixth year at Hogwarts, and at first Remus thought it was a result of what Sirius had done the year prior; their friendship was strained and rocky for a long time afterwards, but eventually, it somehow brought them closer. The closer they got, the more Remus realized just how different his relationship with Sirius was than with anyone else.
By the end of last term, Remus could hardly stand to be alone with him. It felt like there was a constant tension in the air, an anticipation, like they were hanging in the balance, waiting for something to push them in the right direction. The problem was Remus didn’t know which direction was the right one.
“Let’s stop in here,” he said suddenly, desperate for a distraction, and gestured to a corner store they were walking by. “I’ll get us some lemonades.”
“Thank Merlin, it’s hot as dragon’s breath out here,” Peter complained, pulling on the collar of his shirt to try and get some air on his skin.
Remus held the door to the shop open as the others shuffled through, and Sirius winked at him as he passed. “Such a gentleman, Moony.”
“Who said chivalry is dead?” Remus replied, walking in after him, and if Remus’ cheeks were a little pink, it must have been from the sun; certainly not from Sirius winking at him.
Peter and James had quickly disappeared down one of the aisles, and Remus found himself wandering around with Sirius.
“Do you actually know what all this stuff is?” Sirius inquired, squinting at the muggle items on the shelves.
“Yes,” Remus laughed, “Of course.” There was something tugging at his heart at the sight of Sirius in such mundane surroundings; he was so out of place here, with his magic practically radiating off of him, and yet, Remus felt like it suited him, like he could naturally fit in if he wanted to.
“I reckon James was wrong,” Sirius mused, breaking through Remus’ thoughts, as he reached out to pick something up from a shelf. “I think muggles are barmy. I mean, who would ever want beans in a can?” He showed the can to Remus as if it were an offensive old shoe. “Or corn! Why is there corn in a can, Moony?”
Remus couldn’t help the bubbles of laughter that escaped him as Sirius showed him more and more banal pieces of muggle life.
“No!” Sirius gasped, “No, tell me I’m not looking at canned tuna!”
Remus swallowed his giggles and adopted a somber demeanor, “I wouldn’t want to lie to you.”
“Moony! That is horrifying! How does a fish even fit in that tiny thing? This is absolute madness.”
“I know you’re used to food magically appearing in front of you, Padfoot,” Remus mocked, his voice dripping with condescension, “Literally by magic, but the other half of the world has to cook it for themselves.”
“I know that!” he cried indignantly, then raised his chin in the air, “I know all about cooking, thank you. James’ mum and I cooked scones the other day.”
“Baked. You baked scones.”
“Yeah, yeah, that’s what I said, but aren’t you impressed?”
“I am,” Remus acknowledged, pretending to focus on a box of candy rings, “I didn’t know you had it in you.”
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Moony.”
Remus stilled and looked back at Sirius, who seemed to be standing closer to him than a moment ago. There was something about the way he spoke that made Remus think they were talking about two different things.
“Really,” Remus quipped, trying to keep his voice steady, “You think after six and a half years I don’t know everything about you?”
“I know you don’t.”
“You’re saying there are hidden depths to Sirius Black?” Remus certainly felt as if he were losing his footing and tumbling into those same depths.
“I can’t help that I’m a complex, intriguing person, Moony,” Sirius purred, his head tilted to the side.
“I suppose-”
“LADS!”
They jumped a foot in the air as James whipped around the corner with Peter in tow. Remus noticed Sirius taking a significant step backwards; he hadn’t realized they’d been leaning in so close together.
“What is it, Prongs?” Sirius asked with a smile on his face, though it seemed a little forced.
“Have you seen the crisps aisle?”
“No, we were busy looking at cans of fish.”
“What? That’s nasty- no,” James cringed but shook the unpleasant image out of his head and rallied with enthusiasm, “You have to come see all the different kinds of crisps. Pads, remember crisps? Remember we had them last summer?”
“I remember.”
“There’s a barbecue flavour! I don’t even know what barbecue is but I have to taste it! Come on!”
Sirius sent a quick smile Remus’ way and let James tug him back to the wonder that was the crisps aisle. Peter also smiled at Remus (he was always happy when James was happy), and they followed the other two boys, drawn by the excited noises they were making. Well, James was making.
“Salt and vinegar, Pads! We have to try it. Get one of each-”
“You should send some to Lily!” Peter suggested eagerly, then dropped his voice, “She’s muggleborn; I bet she loves crisps.”
James dropped the bags he was holding and grabbed Peter’s face, planting a big, sloppy kiss on each of his cheeks, much to his delight.
“Brilliant, Pete! Yes! We’ll get one of each for us, and one of each for Lily-”
“Er...James?” Remus asked hesitantly, “How are you planning on paying for all that? Did you bring any muggle money?”
James’ face fell like Remus had just told him his favourite broom had been smashed to pieces.
“I left it in my bag at your place. Oh, no! This is a disaster.”
“Relax, mate,” Sirius placated, then turned to Remus, “Can’t we take the stuff now and come back with the money later?”
“It doesn’t work like that,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head at Sirius’ ignorance.
“Well…” Sirius was looking at James’ dejected face, and Remus could see the cogs in his mind turning, thinking of possible solutions to their problem. “We could-”
“No hexing the shopkeeper!” Remus quickly interjected, peering over the shelves to the middle-aged woman reading a magazine behind the cash register.
“Alright, alright,” Sirius rolled his eyes, “We’ll just have to come back later, eh James?”
“I guess,” James sighed dramatically.
“But in the meantime…” Sirius paused meaningfully, and James’ eyes began to light up at the mischievous grin on Sirius’ face, “How about a game?” Remus groaned inwardly and prayed that whatever plan he was concocting didn’t involve breaking the law; muggle or magic.
“I dare you to knick something,” Sirius challenged.
Remus should have known better.
“Knick what?” James asked, his calculating eyes darting to the items around them.
“Anything. But just one item.”
“Done,” James accepted easily, “But you have to do it too.”
“Done.”
“Wormy? Moony? Care to join in?”
Sirius laughed. “As if Moony is going to steal-”
“I’m in,” Remus announced. He smiled at Sirius’ dumbfounded expression as James convinced Peter, and Remus leaned in closer to him to whisper, “I’m a complex and intriguing person too, Padfoot. There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”
He watched as Sirius’ eyes flicked down to his mouth, and Remus bit his bottom lip as his stomach contracted with a sudden, almost painful intensity.
“Alright!” James pronounced loudly, and Remus and Sirius jumped apart again, “Off you go, and let’s meet in the alley beside that dish-cleaner-”
“Dishwasher.”
“-Dishwasher shop,” James finished, and immediately snatched up a small bag of crisps, shoved it under his shirt, and skipped out of the store while thanking the shopkeeper for her excellent service.
Remus and Peter were left staring at the closing door with their mouths agape.
Sirius was smirking with pride and amusement, then turned to Peter. “Go on, Wormy,” Sirius nudged him, “Do it quickly before the nice muggle lady gets suspicious and calls the muggle Aurors on you.”
Peter gulped audibly, sweat starting to drip down his temples, and turned frantically down the next aisle.
“I don’t know why I’m friends with you, honestly.”
Sirius grinned at Remus. “Because life is always interesting when I’m around, Moons.”
“That’s one way to put it,” Remus teased, his stomach doing another flip at the other boy’s brilliant smile. They began to meander through the shop as nonchalantly as possible, and again Remus felt like he was standing at a crossroads with Sirius; torn between two paths, two possible directions with two different outcomes, and someone had to make a choice before it was too late.
“So,” Sirius stopped abruptly and turned to face Remus, “Have you decided?”
“What?” Remus asked sharply, having a wild thought that Sirius had somehow read his mind.
“Have you decided what you’re going to knick?”
“Oh, right, maybe-”
“You going to pay for that, then?”
Sirius and Remus swiftly stood on their tiptoes to look over to where Peter was frozen in front of the door to the shop, beet red, with a package of black licorice sticking out of his back pocket. The woman was leaning casually over the cash register, gazing at Peter with a mixture of exasperation and entertainment.
“I-I’m sorry!” Peter squeaked, as he whipped the licorice out and threw it on the counter, “I’m sorry! I don’t want- I’m not- I- Sorry!” And he ran out the door.
Sirius burst out laughing, and Remus tried to shush him so as not to draw attention, although he knew the woman was already watching them closely.
“Hush, Sirius!” Remus' voice shook as he tried to contain his own laughter.
“Poor Pete,” Sirius crowed, wiping a fake tear from his eye, “He’s never very good under pressure is he?”
“You are a terrible person.”
“Good thing you love me anyway,” he grinned.
Remus watched as Sirius realized what he’d said, his cheeks flushing pink and his smile wavering, and he tried to lean coolly against a shelf of sweets. Remus wished he knew what to say, although he was pretty sure his throat was closing up on him so he wouldn’t have been able to anyway. They stood awkwardly looking at their feet, waiting again, waiting for a push in the right direction.
“You know, it’s now or never, Moony.”
Remus’ head whipped up and he stared into Sirius’ striking eyes.
“N-now or never?”
“Yeah, you better choose quick,” Sirius explained, his voice low, and Remus once again felt as if they were talking about something else. “What are you doing to take, Moony?”
Remus didn’t have to ask Sirius what he would steal; he had snatched up Remus’ heart long ago. With that realization, he knew what to do; Remus had to be the one to choose which direction was right, and he had to be the one to push them towards it.
He glanced around them for a moment, then slowly stepped up in front of Sirius, bringing them almost toe to toe. He reached forward, his eyes sliding from Sirius’ to the shelf over his shoulder, and he heard Sirius’ breath catch as he leaned close, close enough to feel the warmth from each other’s bodies, and smell the sweat on each other’s skin.
Remus was acutely aware of Sirius’ eyes on him as he kept moving until they were almost cheek to cheek, and he turned his head at the last second, capturing Sirius’ lips in a quick kiss that tasted like honey and summer.
He pulled back, grinning at Sirius’ shocked face, and turned away abruptly, leaving Sirius standing there stunned. He floated over to the refrigerators, feeling like he was flying on the fastest of brooms, and grabbed four lemonades. He brought them to the counter, where the woman eyed him with suspicion, before smiling knowingly when Remus overpaid for the drinks and told her to keep the change.
Sirius, still slightly dazed, followed Remus out of the shop and around the corner to the alley where James and Peter were waiting. Peter was leaning against the wall, trying to calm his breathing, and James was patting his shoulder comfortingly, biting his cheek to try and stop from laughing.
“He’ll be fine,” James reassured.
“Have a lemonade, Pete,” Remus said, holding one out to him, which Peter accepted gratefully. Remus handed a bottle to James, then to Sirius, who blinked up at him as he accepted his drink, his face soft and vulnerable.
“So?” James inquired, “What’d you steal, then?”
“Er,” Sirius cleared his throat and looked over at James, “Muggle chewing gum.”
“Nice. And you, Moony?”
Sirius glanced at Remus nervously, but Remus simply put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a chocolate bar, holding it up for them to see, smiling wryly.
“Ha!” James laughed, “Of course.” He threw his arm around Peter to steady him, and guided him out of the alley, muttering affirmations as they started down the street towards the toy shop Remus had promised to take them to.
“When did you grab that?” Sirius quietly asked when they were alone, walking at a distance from the other two.
“When I was stealing something else.”
He looked over at Sirius to see him smiling almost shyly, something Remus had rarely seen before, and he knew he would never tire of it; that private smile, one that was just for him.
“It can’t have been better than the chocolate you swiped, though,” Sirius quipped.
“It might’ve been,” he teased.
“Probably difficult to compare,” Sirius tapped his chin thoughtfully, his eyes full of mischief, “When you only had a quick taste... Sounds like we should do a more thorough test, Moony.”
“Yeah,” Remus agreed, his mind reeling and cheeks flushing at the implications, “Yeah, I think we should, Padfoot”
Remus brushed his hand against Sirius’, leaving a tingling sensation along his skin as they hurried to catch up to James and Peter. He was warm all over, not just from the brilliant sun high above them, and couldn’t wipe the smile off his face, feeling confident that the path he was finally leading them down was the right one.
“Hmmm… All right, would you rather, mmm… Smell Borris Johnson’s sweaty gym socks, or snog Professor Slughorn full on the mouth for a straight minute— oh erm, not so straight I reckon on second thought.”
Remus wrinkles his nose at him from across the bed, and clucks his tongue at the awful pun. “You’re unruly.”
“And you’re dodging,”
“Am not arse, I’m just recovering from that very terrifying scenario you’ve spewed out like the sadistic satanist you are.”
“Which scenario are you recovering from though?” Sirius leers, wiggling his eyebrows and jostling Remus’s textbook with his foot.
“I hate that you’re enjoying this so much,” Remus intones in a deadpan.
“Mary John, I’m waiting,” Sirius says with far too much glee.
Sometimes Remus is sure that he hates him. “Fine, the answer is I hate you.”
“Filthy and slanderous lies, Lupin.”
“You’re demented.”
“Five. Four. Three—“
“I won’t choose.”
“See, all I hear is that you wanna get it on with our chemistry professor, you saucy minx, you.”
Remus sniffs. “Better than touching that prick with even a ten foot pole.”
“Mmmm, have I ever told you how hot and heavy I get hearing you talk politics at me?”
Remus throws him the bird, which makes Sirius laugh. Remus can objectively say that Sirius has the most beautiful variations of laughter in the world, and he’d know considering he’s catalogued each one. This version is definitely top three. His care free, effortless laugh when Remus takes him off guard with a snide remark or lowly muttered retort that’s not appropriate for most company— It’s really more of a experience, truly. His breaths stutter out in a lovely staccato, and his eyes glimmer like the sea, and sometimes it feels like the world’s been suspended and it’s only the two of them in that slice of eternity.
Erm, Ah, but yeah…. That only happens occasionally, and it’s only because Sirius is Remus’s greatest friend— has been since the final year of primary school after Remus had moved to the London outskirts from his small, coastal town in Wales, and on first sight, Sirius swung a snowball straight to Remus’s face, which he of course responded to by throwing two more his way, and well… The pair of them were soaking and breathless by the end of it, but their fate was sealed, they were the greatest of friends, and nothing would ever alter that unquestionable staple.
So what if sometimes Remus’s chest thuds painfully when Sirius dimples his way, or Remus only ever wants to talk to him over anyone else— even Lily or his Mam— if he’s had a bad day, or good one, or if something remarkable had happened, or , or… Or whenever really. And there’s absolutely no significance that Remus can’t help the totally delighted grin that splits his face in half whenever he gets a text or snap from Sirius.
None of that is at all relevant.
Sirius is Remus’s greatest friend, and he’d never risk ruining that by allowing some pesky little crush swallow him whole and clammer out his mouth— vulnerable and throbbing in the open space between them. It doesn’t matter if Marlene always makes kissy faces their way, or how James only ever refers to them as a couple, and so what if Peter’s got a pole running that Remus knows basically the whole school is betting on.
They’re all wrong, Sirius would never, ever feel the same sort of way that Remus does him, that’s downright preposterous and ridiculous and just simply impossible. And Remus’s perfectly content with that very real truth… He is.
Remus is fine with it God help him. So everyone else just needs to but the fuck out of their business.
Besides, this, this right now— Him and Sirius splayed out on opposite ends of Remus’s bed, with Sirius’s feet nudging at Remus’s elbow whenever he’s got a question about there homework, with the window cracked open just so, letting in some of the chilly winter air because Sirius absolutely can not focus if he’s not cold— the fucking furnace— Where Remus can still hear the going ons of his family playing out on the floor below them… This is the most perfect place in Remus’s eyes, and he won’t ever change that, especially not to live out some boyhood fantasy that would never come into fruition in his wildest of dreams.
Remus’s content… He is… He has to be or else he’d lose one of the most vital people in his world.
.-
“You’ve got footie practice after school, right?”
“Mmhmm, you coming to watch?”
“Only if you admit i’m your good luck charm,” Remus sardonically bats his lashes at Sirius as if he was in a mascara advert, and the taller boy blows a raspberry right back at him.
“Nice, real nice. You’re extraordinarily mature, you know that, Black?”
“And sexy, don’t forget that, oh so important descriptor Lupin.”
Remus leans against the locker besides Sirius’s, watches as he trades his current binders for the lot he’ll need for the afternoon, and tries really hard not to stare too longingly at how Sirius’s arm muscles ripple beneath their school’s maroon, uniform jackets in the most delicious of ways. (He hates the fact he’s been dissolved into a starry eyed mess lusting over the star striker, but thus is his fate.)
“I’d never commit such a faux pas, and I’m insulted that you’d ever think as much.”
Sirius sneers at him with a slight shake to his head. “So you coming or not?”
“I’m still contemplating my options,” he preens, but before Sirius could retort, Marlene, megawatt smile and dangerously sharp smirk— swaggers over towards them.
“Good morning my two beautiful chums!”
“What do you want?” Sirius asks before even glancing her way, to which Marlene blinks up at him, faux owlish. “S, I just wanted to greet a couple of my closest companions this lovely December morning,” she defends herself.
“Marls, you’re never this agreeable before noon,” Remus points out hesitantly.
“ And you rarely are even afterwards,” Sirius tacks on.
“Rude,” she pouts.
“Accurate,” Remus pipes in with an apologetic grimace.
Marlene stares them both down for a solid minute before finally relaxing her shoulders, and thrusting out the legal pad in her grasp. “The student council and spirit society are selling corsages for the snowflake formal, and Dorcas has deployed me to get some orders.”
“Whipped,” Sirius teases through a counter-fit cough.
Marlene doesn’t hesitate before smashing the legal pad on his head. “And you traipsing around getting people to buy the tickets for the theatre department last semester even though Re was only playing Mercutio wasn’t you being wrapped around his littlest finger?”
Remus flushes, feeling an unnerving amount of bees stinging around his stomach, and is thankful when the conversation pauses after Sirius casts her a very heated V. “Sod off.”
“So are you guys gonna buy or not?” Marlene huffs, weight slung to her left hip, and arms crossed against her chest.
“I’m a gay bloke, Marls, did you forget that?” Remus pins her with a one eyed squint, and she just scrunches her face up at him, exasperated.
“I’m sure there’s matching boutonnieres.”
“Fine, I just don’t have any school spirit then.”
This time she glares. “Lily and James are Head Boy and Head Girl, isn’t there like an oath between you lot, one for all and all for one, or some rot?”
“That’s the three musketeers,” he says.
“isn’t that basically who you guys are?” She reasons.
Before their wage of words could continue, Sirius just grabs the order form out of Marlene’s hands and fills out a sheet with the flurry of his pen. “Happy?”
“Positively delighted,” she leers, pecking them both on the cheek before strutting off, reminding them of their group study session at Alice’s tonight in her wake.
Sirius shakes his head, reluctantly amused with a grin gathering on the corners of his mouth, but for Remus everything feels like it’s frozen. “You didn’t have to do that you know? ’S not like James is much of a Head Boy anyhow, and Lily wouldn’t have really cared.”
Sirius shrugs, commences their walk to the opposite wing of the school for their shared history class. “Emmy likes that sort of romantical shite.”
Remus sees red, feels his heart lodging in his damn esophagus. “Oh, so— Erm, you’re taking her then,” Remus wonders if his tone sounds as detached as he feels.
“Yeah,” Sirius eyes him, questioning. “She wants that title of snow queen real bad, made me promise I’d campaign with her and the whole shtick.”
“Oh,” it’s like Remus could feel it when he closes off completely, can feel his hopes squashed down and his heart contract and his every organ collapsing in on themselves, leaving him feeling hollowed out completely.
Sirius slows down marginally, eyeing him with a slight frown. “Is that all right? I know you two don’t exactly get along and we were planning to go as a group, bu—“
“It’s fine,” Remus hates how screechy his voice gets, how he feels like he’s about to scream. “You two are a shoe in, no doubt.”
Sirius tries to mirror Remus’s faux excitement with a tepid grin of his own, but Remus doesn’t let him, instead commandeering their typical table on the back row and tries focussing on the thousandth war with France while his world tilts off kilter.
.-
Emmy is beautiful, and popular and her smile alone dazzles the whole room. She’s everything that Sirius should look for in a partner, someone to match his whip lash wit, and his taste for all things exuberant that skirt on flashy, and someone who’s got just as many friends and admirers as him.
They’re perfect and Remus should just get over his petty ass hatred of her, even if he still thinks she can be down right cruel and selective and selfish. Qualities Sirius surely isn’t… But maybe it’s all in his head how she sneers at people who she finds plane, or how she literally guffaws over the misfortune of others. Maybe his perception of how she wields people in like moths to a flame just to get what she wants is all a misunderstanding, or in his head or something.
Maybe all that’s possible, even if Remus seriously doubts it.
But at the end of the day, Sirius loves her— has been basically infatuated by Emmeline Vance since she first transferred at the start of their Freshman year. Sirius loves her, and who ever Sirius loves is merely an extension of him… Right?
Remus just needs to get over it and somehow rid himself of this crush he’s been fostering for so long it’s basically a part of him at this point. Though, he thinks it’d be a lot easier if he didn’t see their faces plastered on posters everywhere the week and a half leading up to the dance— looking like actual royals that would put Will and cate to shame.
.-
“Yo cheekbones!”
Remus starts, swivels around from where he was scratching his pen to paper, finding Sirius— as glimmering and beautiful as always— swaggering up to him, insanely electric smile painted over his face.
“Would you rather eat a jumbo jar of jalapeños without a break, or eat the toenails from someone with athlete’s foot next to your dinner every night of the rest of your life?”
“I thought you were having lunch with Emmy to keep up your royalty status before this weekend?” Remus asks, tacitly side stepping from the horrific images swimming to the forefront of his mind because of his cruel question.
“Now that doesn’t sound like an answer to my ultimatum,” Sirius says in a singsong sort of voice.
“You answer me first,” Remus says airily.
“But I asked first,” Sirius argues haughtily.
“Well both your options would kill me, so I wouldn’t do either,” Remus retorts.
“That’s not how the game works!”
“You’re the one who always says that rules were made to be broken,” Remus says, lofty as all get out,, and dissolves into laughter at the completely cross look Sirius’s giving him.
“You were born to be contrary, weren’t you?”
“So lunch?”
“Got bored,” he shrugs, hopping onto the corner of the desk Remus’s working on. “What you up to instead of eating?”
“My position paper for Model UN.” Sirius smiles down at him, and Remus can’t help the flush that spreads across his cheeks in return. “Not as glamorous as running as Snow King, I know.”
“It’s precious,” Sirius contends, his soft timbre sounding like syrup and his long fingers fluttering against Remus’s skin, pushing back a lock of his ever disheveled, tawny curls in a far to gentle way, and Remus gulps before averting his gaze to break the sudden tautness that’s built between them.
They’ve had so many of these almost moments, ones that Remus’s always treasured but he knows doesn’t mean much of anything at all to Sirius— Sirius who is effortlessly hilarious, and brims with genius and who is so beautiful that sometimes it hurts looking at him for too long. Sirius who has a new suitor at his beck and call on a near weekly basis. But whenever they transpire now, it just hurts all the more because Remus knows in his heart of hearts that they will never lead anywhere, and Sirius is in love with Emmy and Remus can’t let himself float around in this daydream for any longer.
“Ahem,” he clears his throat, shuffles in his seat only slightly. “I’m Algeria so my Mam’s pretty excited about it. She’s been telling me all the stuff Wikipedia’s got wrong and everything.”
Sirius laughs, but it doesn’t touch his eyes. “Your mother is kinda everything, you know that?”
Remus twists his mouth up, reluctant. “Don’t tell her as much, or else she’ll go on and on how she won Miss Teen Great Britain when she was only sixteen.”
“Hmm, I was wondering where you got that pretty face.”
“You, Sirius Black, can go lick an unwashed arse.”
“You’ll never catch a suitor with that cheek of yours though. I’d work on that, Lupin.”
“I don’t think I could ever win Miss Congeniality, alas.” Remus doesn’t quite catch Sirius’s reply, to busy responding too the text his phone just chirped with instead.
“Mary John, are you listening?”
“Uh-huh.”
Sirius’s brows hike up, flabbergasted smile stretched across his face. “So totally rude! And I came all the way here— to the place where dreamers die— just to spend time with you.”
“Sorry,” Remus gives him an abashed little half grin before setting the phone back down. “’s just Fabian.”
Sirius’s expression drops, goes inquisitive instead of his typical ebullience. “Fabian? Why’s Fabian Prewett texting you, and why is he,” Sirius crooks his head so he’s able to read the new message that popped up on Remus’s phone’s screen. “Asking about color coordination?”
Remus blushes for an entirely new reason now, one he likes much less. “Ah, he’s the sort to like it when our suits like match, but not in an abrasive fashion, you know?”
Sirius’s face goes scarily blank.
“Your suits? Suits for what?”
“The dance…” Remus says slowly, he’s confused what Sirius’s confused about.
“The dance… Right… I thought you were still going with everyone else?”
“Pff, no way,” Remus scoffs. “Lily’s only pretending to be single, you know how red in the face she gets whenever around James. They’ll end up dancing the whole night away. And with Dorcas running the whole event and Benjy thinking any social function is a plague on society, that’d leave me stuck with Peter and Mary, . And honestly I’ve seen enough of her tongue shoved down his throat for a lifetime.” Remus is only slightly surprised that doesn’t even elicit a chuckle from Sirius, who’s now looking a bit stormy— and he thinks he’ll never be accustomed to his mercurial moods that can change as quickly as the snap of the finger.
“Right… So you’re going with Fabian Prewett… as your date?”
“Yes… Why is that so hard to believe?”
“it’s, it’s not,” Sirius scrambles, suddenly standing up.
“Then why are you being so weird about this,” Remus argues, getting up to meet him at his level.
“Am not!”
“You’re going with Emmy,” Remus reminds him, this edge of desperate.
“I know I am, okay. But you— you—“ Sirius tappers off, eyes glassy and lips parted with words he can’t get out, and Jesus fucking Christ is it weird how for the first time ever their roles have reversed. Sirius can’t put any sentences together, and everything Remus’s been beating down— everything thrashing inside of him— are now burning his throat and warring over who can spill out first.
“What? I’m suppose to stay behind like the pathetic, nobody friend. The guy who’s just there to moon after you while you have an actual life. The Judie garland to your Mickie Roomie!”
“What are you even talking about right now!” Sirius shouts, sounding as torn apart as Remus feels.
“As if you don’t know!” He snarls, collecting his books into his backpack— Suddenly this room feels to stifling. He can’t breathe and it’s too hot and his chest is pounding.
He’s imploding and Remus has no idea how to rectify it.
“Just stop! Remus Stop!”
“leave me the fuck alone Sirius!”
“Why are you being such a prick about this!”
And that, that makes Remus angry, angrier than he’s ever been.
Before he could even think about it for a moment longer, Remus is rounding on him, dashing so close to Sirius that he can taste his breath with how close their faces are skirting against each other.
“I’m in love with you! I’ve been in love with you for forever, and I know that you don’t feel the same way, and I know that you’re in love with Emmy and, and I just know okay.”
“Wha—“ Sirius sputters, looking like a gaping fish. “Wait a second, are you jealous? Of sodding Emmy Vance?”
“Don’t!” Remus practically growls out. "Don’t disrespect me, okay? Don’t pretend that you never knew, or that I was such a good actor. I’ve been in love with you for years and you always knew and Fine, I get it. You never felt the same way, that’s fine. But just don’t pretend as if you never had the choice, don’t make me out as the bad guy for actually, finally saying yes to a bloke who’s actually into me. I need to fucking give up on the premise of us, I need to get over you. So I’m going out with fucking Fabian Prewett and you’re going out with Emmy Vance and that’s that!”
His breaths are labored, jagged and painful, as they race out of him, but Remus can’t move. He’s staring straight into Sirius’s beautiful, gray eyes, and he sees everything he’s always seen there, and hates that this is probably the last time he’ll get to be this close to him.
Not after this.
“I didn’t,” is the first thing Sirius croaks out, broken and helpless. “i didn’t know, Remus you have to believe me— I didn’t—”
“How! How could you not know!” He shouts back, but Remus doesn’t get his answer in so many words, instead he feels it.
He feels it when Sirius clamps his hands on either end of his waste-line, feels it when Sirius smashes their lips together in a cacophony of lips, and teeth and spit. He feels it when Sirius moans in side of him, when his hand moves down, spreads across the width of the small of his back, pushing their torsos even closer. Remus feels it when everything goes into focus, when he takes Sirius into his arms, greedy and excited and disbelieving.
And Remus thinks to all the other times he’s kissed another boy— To this prior weekend swapping snogs with a beaming Fabian in the back of a theatre. He thinks of how there was never anything worth anything when he kissed any of them Because it was all Sirius, always Sirius. And he could try to love Fabian, or some other cute boy, and he tried, and he tried, and he tried, and he gave all he had…but it was never enough, could it ever be enough?
Remus knows it in his bones that it’s enough when it’s with Sirius.
When they finally pull apart it’s difficult to breathe and Remus feels lightheaded and it’s wonderful in the most marvelous of ways.
“Oh.”
“Yeah,” Sirius says in a whisper.
“Maybe next time give a guy some warning?” Remus can’t help the shit eating smirk that swipes across his mouth and is elated at the adorably cross scowl Sirius answers him with.
“Fine jackass, how’s this for a warning, I’m gonna kiss you now.”
“That’ll be sufficient, I suppose,” Remus goads, laughing against Sirius’s lips when he does just that.
~*~
Sirius ends up winning snow king, but rejects the dance with Emmy, opts to ask Remus to join him instead, as if they were in the middle of some John Hughes movie from the fucking 80s.
It’s utterly ridiculous and overdone and simply way too much— but everyone applauded and cheered and when Sirius kissed him in the middle of it, Remus felt as if his whole body sung with joy.
May The Best Man Win
The Marauders : Oneshot
James x Reader x Sirius
Word Count: 9358
Warnings: I’m not a big swearer, but I did add something in the end 😂 this turned way angsty, like A LOT, which is what I think the requester wanted
Request: “y/n can’t choose between James and Sirius. preferably tons and tons of angst” - Anon
A/N: A friendly competition turns sour as these best friends fight for your heart without any good intentions
“This is simple.”
“No it isn’t.”
“Yes, it is!”
Sirius sunk further into his chair, covering his eyes with one hand and another holding an ice cold butterbeer.
James stood from the couch, fingers to his temples, glasses askew, “Listen, I saw her first, therefore I get dibs.”
“You shouldn’t call dibs on a girl,” Remus muttered, his quill whizzing across his essay, “That’s not fair for her or for any other potential suitors.”
Peter peered up at his scarred friend from his place on the rug, “Are you saying you fancy her too, Mooney?”
“You can’t claim the girl just because you saw her first,” Sirius reiterated, continuing to block the firelight as it burned his gaze. “Besides, I was the first one to actually speak to her.”
“Is that true, Prongs?” Peter asked, eyes flipping between all those that were talking.
James messed with his hair again, “Well… that’s only because you caught my snitch as it drifted towards her.”
“So you could say that you led me to her.”
The two friends shared a look, one smirking and one grimacing. James paced in front of the fireplace, loosening his tie as Peter followed him with his gaze. Sirius appeared amused that he not only got the first introduction with this girl, but also in flustering his friend.
“Can I ask – are you two interested in this girl because you actually fancy her, or because you want to beat one another?” Remus asked, taking a heavy sigh and corking his ink bottle.
James appeared affronted while Sirius simply looked tired, “I don’t know, I was rather enjoying seeing Potter break his neck while I wooed the lady.”
“Of course I like her, Mooney, why else does a chap make a fool of himself.”
“Oh, come on, Prongs. You only slipped in the corridor twice,” Sirius mused, taking a sip of his drink. “Forgive me, I didn’t count the time you fell through the Fat Friar – that would make it three times.”
Remus rolled up his parchment and added in a delighted voice, “For a gifted quidditch player you can really trip over nothing, can’t you James.”
Sirius chuckled, sneaking a glance at his pacing friend, “Seeking love is a fools errand.”
“If you really believe that then why are you fighting against me asking (Y/N) out?”
“Are you telling us that you’ve found love at first sight?”
James grimaced, leaning against the mantle, “Not… not necessarily.”
“You just think she’s very pretty?” Remus questioned, now settling into the conversation with his homework done.
“No!”
“Beautiful, then?” Peter suggested. And with a swift look from his peer, he shut his mouth.
“Look, I’ll admit that (Y/N) is very attractive, and she caught my eye…”
Sirius cleared his throat, looking off into the distance, “And every other bloke in the Great Hall.” He practically snickered at the sneer coming from James.
“But you need someone to distract you from Lily Evans consistently rejecting your advances,” Remus delivered mercilessly, “You needed a beautiful rebound to make her jealous.”
Sirius finally sat straight in his chair, eyes uncovered, “That’s it, isn’t it?”
James was overly flustered again, hair seeming to frazzle with static, “Well, it sounds a lot worse when you say it like that.”
“You mean the truth?” Remus muttered, folding his arms to warm his cool hands, “If no one’s going to take into consideration the feelings of this girl, I might as well.”
“Alright, I have a bet,” Sirius stated loudly over Remus. He took a mighty swig of his butterbeer, “We both want a girl for the wrong reasons.”
James frowned, wiping a hand over his face, and Peter interjected, “Prongs wants her for the rebound – what’s your wrong reason, Padfoot?”
“Haven’t you been listening to the conversation?” Sirius continued, “I just wanted to spite him, taking the girl right from under him.” His elbows rested on his knees, hands clasped together, “How about we make it a proper competition. You’ll be able to take your mind off Evans and I’ll have something to do other than pantsing Filch and backtalking Minnie.”
The disapproval was immediate on Remus’ face, but he let them finish their statements, knowing precisely when to intervene. James furrowed his brow, a finger between his lips as he contemplated.
“It definitely would make Lily notice.”
“Possibly jealous.”
“And you could build cred that you’re the romantic type.”
“And the ladies will be lining up at my door to get a piece of the action.”
Peter again seemed bewildered at the talk, “I’m sorry, what – what is this proper competition?”
Remus sighed, willing his patience to continue, “These two are disregarding the feelings of a fellow classmate in the hopes that she’ll better their love lives outside of their fake relationship.” When the poor blonde boy seemed even more confused, he added, “Essentially these two want to try and win over (Y/N)’s affection, seeing which one gets it first, and then drop her flat with no consequences.”
“Ah, but the reward will be great,” Sirius stated, grinning, “Breaking one girls heart is worth the dozens that will be willingly given to me afterwards.”
James appeared a bit more skeptical, much to Remus’ satisfaction, “And Lily will realize what she’s been missing out on.”
“You two are impossible,” Remus finally uttered, “I will not condone this; I think you sometimes forget that I am a Gryffindor Prefect.”
“No, I could’ve sworn it was Ravenclaw.”
“Smartass.”
“Besides the point,” Remus waved his hands, light igniting his gaze, “I will not have you play with this girls emotions and then drop her brokenhearted and despising you for the rest of our time at Hogwarts, if not the rest of our lives.”
Sirius let there be a pause after the statement before continuing with a kind of vigor, “Well, now that we’ve gotten the grouchy warning out of the way. I’d say we put it to a vote.”
James nodded, “All in favor of this proper competition for the affections of the one (Y/N) (Y/L/N).” He raised his hand along with Sirius.
After another tense pause and a threatening glare from Sirius, an intimidated Peter reluctantly rose his hand. Remus gave a heavy sigh, crossing his arms tighter against his chest, “This happens every time – you can’t will Peter to your side in every argument.”
“Well, at least for this one, we have,” Sirius laughed, rising from his chair and waltzing over to his friend for a bone crushing handshake, “May the best man win.”
James returned the aggressive grip, staring into the mischievous glint in Sirius’ eyes, “And upon agreement, we do not let her know of this competition, this is (Y/N) falling for us naturally using our own wit and charm.”
“Therefore, I will be gaining the advantage because I am overflowing with both.”
Peter chimed in with a nervous smile, “And we can’t persuade her to go for one of you over the other?”
“No, we’ll use you as spies,” James continued, massaging his crushed hand, “If she decides to talk to you about one of us, you are legally bound to tell us everything she said.”
“And if we tell you to pass along particular information, you will please do exactly that.” Sirius returned to his chair but opted for leaning against the back of it. “And the competition will only end when she is given the ultimatum and has chosen one of us.”
James nodded, pulling his tie even looser, “And we have by the end of the school year – if she hasn’t chosen by then we’ll give her the final question before exams.”
“Oh, for pity’s sake,” Remus huffed, “Don’t lay a question like that on the girl before exams; at least wait until after when she has nothing else to worry about.”
“Well, I don’t think we’ll have to think about that,” Sirius gloated, “Because I’ll make her fall months before final exams.”
~~~
(Y/N) wandered the corridor, a very peculiar incident waying on her mind. She just had the most bewildering interaction with James Potter right outside the Great Hall. The boy was all in a tither, apparently at the end of a rather exhausted sprint down the main staircase.
“Good – Good afternoon, (Y/N),” he had huffed. “How are you?”
She smiled, puzzled, “I’m fine, thank you. You don’t seem to be, though.” She gave him a hesitant look and watched as he awkwardly tried to gather himself.
“Right, yes – it’s hard to run down stone stairs without falling – takes all my concentration; especially when my focus is elsewhere.” He gazed at her behind his squared glasses, hoping he wasn’t being too subtle.
(Y/N) bit the inside of her cheek, scrunching her face as she thought, “What’s on your mind?”
When he grinned at her reply, she couldn’t help but find him quite cute. His gleaming smile complimented his light eyes and dark hair well. Of course she had heard of Potter, him and all of his boisterous friends, but she’d never found herself caught up in a one-on-one conversation with him.
Just the other day she ran into his best mate, Sirius, in the Great Hall. And from that interaction it appeared he’d never laid eyes on her before. Perhaps he said something to James?
“I saw you crossing the corridor. I was trying to think of something clever to say.”
It was incredibly apparent that James was feigning a kind of bravado that his friend Sirius had once shown her. But all too noticeably she was able to pick out the hesitance and anxiety behind his words.
It made her smile even more as he peered down through his unbalanced glasses.
“And you came up with ‘good afternoon’?” she snickered, readjusting her heavy book bag. “You sure it took all of your concentration? Seems a bit obvious.”
This time he laughed along with her, finding his hands itching to fidget with his snitch. How was he supposed to focus on befriending (Y/N) when he had Sirius’ obnoxious face in the back of his mind? He could practically hear his friend mocking his conversational direction.
“Yeah, you got me,” he sighed, “I saw you and my mind went blank.”
She paused momentarily, letting that sentence tense the room. He appeared to sense the shift, messing with his hair even more, which she noticed with a skip in her heartbeat. What could she say? It was cute.
“Well – I’ve got to get studying.” She gestured her path set for the oak front doors, “I promised myself I would ace McGonagall’s exam.”
James saw his opportunity immediately and chose to seize it, “I’ve been meaning to study too! Do you want a study partner? I’m completely hopeless, but I have no doubt you could put me to good use.”
She couldn’t deny the plea in his gaze. Did he really want to? Why would he, all of the sudden? They were never great friends before. But when his tousled hair fell over the rim of his glasses, the skip in her chest wouldn’t allow her to refuse.
“Sure, if you don’t mind going outside. I like walking along the forbidden forest and sitting in the pumpkin patch.”
Her acceptance was enough to make James bounce on the balls of his feet, “Perfect.” He leaned towards the front doors and she took the hint to lead the way. In another stroke of genius he reached out a hand, “Let me carry your bag; you look about ready to collapse under the weight.”
“Are you calling me weak, Potter?”
He smirked at the use of his last name, “Absolutely not. It’s just, I told you I was hopeless with the studying. Maybe my uses will fall under ‘pack mule.’”
It made her laugh enough that she willingly shrug the bag off her shoulder and into his hands.
He liked the sound of her laugh. It was the kind of laugh that infected everything within its vicinity. It even made him want to join her, but he chose to offer a pleasant smile.
In that unsavory part in the back of his head, James could see Sirius unwillingly placing a point under ‘Potter.’ It looked like he was getting the head start.
Back in the Gryffindor dormitories, Sirius was brooding against his window, staring down at the grounds. He was witnessing the playful interactions between James and (Y/N) in the pumpkin patch.
They each sat on their own massive pumpkins, which were grown to colossal size for the Halloween festivities. They appeared to be laughing, James distracting her from whatever she was reading.
James quickly snatched the book from her hands, and she jokingly nudged his arm in protest. He held the book high and laughed at her pout.
It made Sirius clench his fists against the stone wall. If only he had gotten to her first. He would have to put some extra effort into getting on her good side after today. Just the way she sneaked glances at James when he wasn’t looking already put Sirius on edge.
There was no way James was more charming then him. Sure they were a pair, but James was the one good at sports, family dinners, and sneaking around the castle with his invisibility cloak. Sirius was the one good with wit, flirting, and sneaking them in and out of trouble.
He couldn’t help but think of how much more capable James was with relationships too. He was always a bit more open and willing to share then Sirius ever was.
“If you ground into that wall any harder, I fear the stone will start to turn to dust.” Remus laughed aloud, in the middle of a game of Exploding Snap with Peter.
Sirius had to will his hand out of its clenched fist. “Just look how far he’s gotten. She all over him!”
“Shoving him away is hardly the definition of ‘all over him.’” Remus corrected, placing another card on his tower, “They’re simply being friendly.”
“Your heart isn’t in the game, Mooney. I can’t trust your judgement.”
Sirius watched as the sun began to dip and James offered another stroll towards the Black Lake. How dare he! That was Sirius’ move.
“You spoke to her first, didn’t you?” His tone was flat, but Remus always had the need to cheer his friends. “I doubt she’s forgotten you so quickly.”
“You’re not seeing the way she looks at him.”
“It’s only been a few days, Padfoot,” Peter muttered, always afraid to be snapped at for his opinion. “(Y/N)’s sensible – she’ll weigh her options carefully. You’ve got plenty of time to show her what you have to offer.”
Surprisingly, Sirius didn’t feel the need to belittle Peter, “I’m just going to have to think of a more memorable event. Sure James could bump into her and do some homework outside. But that’s not so significant, students do homework every day.”
“What do you consider an insignificant event?” Peter paused his turn at the Exploding Snap tower, sensing the uneasiness in Remus’ brow.
“Please don’t tell me your intentions include the hospital wing?” Remus asked.
Sirius tried to watch the couple out the window with the darkness descending on them. “It won’t be needed if I can catch her in time.”
Remus widened his tired eyes, Peter attempting to match the mood. “What are you thinking, Sirius? Don’t be doing anything stupid. Getting expelled isn’t worth this bet.”
“Don’t be so ridiculous. It’s nothing to be worried about – not by you two.” He retreated to his bed, stretching out with a new air of confidence, “Damsels in distress can’t resist a prince charming.”
“I have to insist, Sirius.”
He rolled his eyes, “If I tell you, there’s a chance James will find out. I don’t need any interference.”
“So help me,” Remus glowered, “If I find out this girl is incapacitated because of your tomfoolery…”
“Relax, Mooney – all’s fair in love and war.”

The rain was falling into a lazy drizzle, calming the cold that had plagued them that morning. (Y/N) followed the stone steps outside and up towards the owlery, protecting her letters from the last remnants of rainfall.
She dwelled on her conversation with her good friend Mary MacDonald last night. It was a much needed vent about the last few weeks, and Mary was more than willing to listen. She was always a sweet friend.
“James Potter? Are you serious?”
“Yes!” (Y/N) had said, “And we walked along the forest and the lake well into the night. We just talked and talked, and it was actually… really nice.”
“I always thought Potter was a bit of a pompous prat.”
(Y/N) laughed, “Sometimes that does shine through, but I’m getting good at knocking him off his high horse when it does.”
Mary ran a hand through her hair, thinking, “Have you done anything since then?”
“To tell you the truth it’s like he can’t leave me alone. He keeps cropping up in all sorts of places – it’s like I can’t refuse him as a friend now. It’s usually when I’m studying in the Great Hall or the library; he shows up with treats or ideas about walking the quidditch pitch.”
There was a strange glint now entering Mary’s eyes. She let (Y/N) ramble on some more, waiting for some dire information.
“I’ll admit it’s been fun, it’s definitely confusing, but also fun. I’m starting to get used to having him around – he’s always cracking jokes. He knows how to make me laugh. And...”
“Oh, and his hair, right? How he’s always ruffling it around,” Mary put an edge of mockery in her tone, but she was thrilled with the wide eyed reaction from (Y/N). “And his glasses…”
(Y/N) stared at her friend for a moment too long before a blush betrayed her, “… they’re always crooked.”
Mary nodded to herself, a fist under her chin and a smug look on her face. “You like him, don’t you?”
She gave it a lot of thought, “I don’t know. He’s cute and I enjoy being around him. But it’s too soon to tell.”
“It seems pretty obvious to me,” Mary concluded, pointing at her friend accusingly, “You have feelings for James Potter.”
(Y/N) began to retort, “We’ve only been hanging out for a week!”
“And he’s obviously been doing something right because you are still thinking about that week.”
Now as (Y/N) climbed the staircase towards the owlery, she sighed. Maybe she did feel something for James. She couldn’t deny the skipping of her heart every time he brushed her shoulder with his.
After tying her letters to nearby barn and screech owls, (Y/N) went for her favorite spot just outside the tower. She sat on the railing and let her legs swing in the open air, taking a deep breath of the crisp wind.
The stone was still damp from the ceasing rain and it made her fingertips cold touching it. She had hoped the fresh air would clear her head of her recent puzzling thoughts and feelings. But the longer she sat there, the more she found her mind fogging up.
What was she doing sitting on the railing? How did she get up there?
Shaking her head a bit, (Y/N) tried to turn herself around but found another wave of confusion hit her.
Where was she, again?
And reflexively scooching to one side to peer at her surroundings, (Y/N) found herself unbalanced and sliding off whatever she was sitting upon. Was this a railing?
She began to slip off the damp stone, a sudden shriek on her lips. Her feet found no traction as they descended further, and her hands grappled for any kind of purchase. In just a few seconds she was dangling from the edge of the staircase, fingers cold and numb against the rough bricks.
She couldn’t find her voice as she struggled to wedge a foot along the side. Heavy breaths came from her lungs as whimpers escaped her.
But in another few seconds, she heard another’s voice.
“Woah! What are you doing?”
Frantically turning her gaze upward, (Y/N) saw a familiar face. Sirius Black?
“H-Help.”
He copied her panicked face, fumbling with stowing his wand. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you.” His hands found hers and he began to hoist her up.
(Y/N) scrambled over the edge, feeling the numbness that started in her fingers trail through the rest of her body. She could hardly comprehend the way she fell into Sirius’ arms, clutching at his cloak out of sheer panic.
“Hey, I’ve got you. You’re safe now, (Y/N).”
He felt the shivers racking her body as he held her to him. An unexpected pang of guilt shot through him. She had fistfuls of his cloak, fear plain in her eyes as she stared at a fixed point ahead.
“Are you all right?” When she didn’t respond, Sirius tried cupping her face, turning her gaze to him. “Are you all right, (Y/N)?”
She looked at him hard, blinking furiously as warmth began to seep back into her bones. “I – um… I think so.”
“You’re not hurt at all?”
She stared at the way his face changed when he asked it. A crease formed between his eyebrows and his eyes were set upon hers. She started to feel his hands on her cheeks and a sudden rush of heat flooded them.
“No, no – I think I’m good.”
That warmth began to unfreeze her limbs, her mind no longer so foggy. She took a deliberate step away from Sirius, embarrassed by the momentary close contact.
He held his hands up, noticing the swift retreat, “Hey, I’m just checking. You look a little shaken.”
She looked around her, “I don’t understand,” she muttered.
“What were you doing sitting on the edge of the stairs? You do realize it was raining this morning.”
She looked harder but couldn’t find any reason. She must’ve just slipped, though she’d sat on that railing for years and never fallen. “I come up here to think. I’ve never fallen before.”
He nodded but kept a concerned look on his face, “You seem a little dazed. Maybe you should visit the hospital wing – Madam Pomfrey might have something to calm you down.”
“I told you I was all right.”
“I know, but it would make me feel better if you got checked out anyways.”
Was her mind still foggy or was Sirius Black showing genuine concern? She snapped her gaze back to his and realized that the arrogant flirt from that day in the Great Hall was completely gone. It was almost bewildering to see his face without the smugness or the classic smirk.
Her stomach churned, whether from leftover fear or freshly made nerves, she didn’t know. But she was compelled to return the compassion.
“Thank you,” she said, “For pulling me up.”
A smile returned to his features, “It’s no problem. Damsels are my specialty.”
So the arrogant flirt was still in there.
“It was lucky you came over here. I would’ve been a goner.”
She waited for him to say something obnoxious like ‘yeah, you are lucky, princess,’ or ‘just call me savior from now on.’ But he caught himself with his mouth agape, it was a calculated hesitance.
“I’m glad,” he said, more sincerity in his tone. “I’m glad you’re okay.”
Her stomach did another involuntary flip. Did Sirius always have such a nice smile? She never realized how kind it was, or how warm his eyes were.
“Can we stop by the hospital wing real quick?”
“We?” she murmured, still dazed by the sudden rush of epiphanies.
He chuckled, “I’d like to follow through, if you don’t mind. What if you slipped on your way down to the castle?”
(Y/N) recognized the chuckle as something to accompany a witty remark, but this time it was partnered with a warm gaze and a slanted brow.
“Sure,” she said, hesitantly. “Are you sure you’re all right? You’re acting strange.”
He laughed again, leading the way back down the stairs, respectfully keeping his distance from her now. “Whatever do you mean?”
“I mean,” (Y/N) hid her hands in her pockets, hoping the redness had dulled in her cheeks, “You haven’t said anything irritatingly pretentious yet.”
He let out a low whistle, “The damsel bites back.” She didn’t say anything more so he shrugged his shoulders, “Maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to assume I’m like that all the time.”
Had she made assumptions? She had only spoken to him that one other time in the Great Hall.

There was a very clear thwack as the portrait swung closed. Mumblings could be heard from the Fat Lady and a string of first and second years scrambled to move their things elsewhere and avoid the coming carnage.
James came tromping towards the corner of comfy couches the marauders normally occupied, finding the trio he was seeking.
“You have some explaining to do,” he pointed at Sirius, “And it better be lengthy and detailed.”
The venom was perfectly seen in his words, and it only made the victory that much sweeter in Sirius’ eyes. “Yes, Prongs?”
“How unrelentingly pig-headed are you? How much of a conniving, thieving git are you?” James began to rise his voice much to the growing grin on Sirius’ face.
Remus began to contort his brow, “What’s happened, James?”
“What’s happened is that Sirius has no regard for (Y/N)’s safety. Apparently it was thrown out the window when he decided to toy with her to get back at me.”
“Who said anything about getting back at you? I’m just playing the game.” Sirius was much too relaxed on the sofa for James’ liking.
Peter piped up, “What’s happened to (Y/N)?” He had grown quite fond of the girl whenever they met in the library. She was always kind to him when he struggled with assignments.
“Sirius landed her in the hospital wing!” James hissed, “She just told me downstairs.”
Remus rounded on their friend, “You said you wouldn’t let it get that far!”
“You knew about it!”
“Is (Y/N) all right?”
Sirius yelled the loudest, “Alright, you pansies, calm yourselves. (Y/N) is fine.”
“Not before she was almost thrown off the side of the owlery.”
Remus felt his jaw drop, “You shoved her off the stairs?”
Sirius jumped to his feet, “Now, now, Mooney – let’s not fall to any conclusions. (Y/N) was sitting on the railing and I simply nudged her into the perfect position for a rescue.”
James was fighting the urge to sock his friend in the face. “By having her fear for her life, dangling on the side of a mountain?”
“I’ll admit, it wasn’t meant to go that far.”
“Then how far, exactly?” Remus urged, “Be careful, Sirius – I might not hold James back from hitting you.”
“I just sent a little confundus charm her way while she was sitting there so she would forget why she was there in the first place. Then I thought I’d surprise her, she’d jump a bit, I’d steady her so she wouldn’t fall… easy.”
James had to cross his arms very tightly to keep them from swinging, “And you took the charm too far?”
Sirius felt a familiar pang of guilt, the look of terror on (Y/N)’s face as she clutched at him resurfacing in his memory. “Perhaps. But she’s all right, isn’t she? I took her to the hospital wing just to make sure, and Madam Pomfrey said after a nights rest she’d be fine!”
The silence was tense and anxious. Remus looked ready to attack Sirius just as much as James wanted to, but maybe not as ferociously. Peter cowered in the corner, wishing to run from the fight.
Sirius was the only one with a casual look on his face, “You two are overreacting.”
“I can’t believe you would put (Y/N) into such unnecessary danger,” Remus remarked.
“You’re overlooking the benefits, though,” Sirius continued, “Clearly (Y/N) has been talking about me. Clearly she has me on her mind, exactly where I want to be.” He stared smugly at James, relishing in his fuming state.
James couldn’t comprehend the fury he was feeling. How dare Sirius take such measures. How dare he hurt someone he cared about.
Wait.
Someone he cared about?
“This isn’t a game anymore.”
“Excuse me?”
“This is (Y/N) we’re talking about,” James reiterated, “She isn’t a chess piece – she’s our friend. You clearly are taking it way too far. I thought charm and flirting would’ve sufficed, but you want to throw in some death defying stunts…”
Sirius held his hands up, his smugness melting away, “Easy – you don’t think I was worried about her too? I’m sensing a little more than anger here, Prongs.”
James swallowed hard, his face set, “That might be my restraint in killing you right now.”
“No, no – I think you’re hiding some other unresolved feelings.” Saying the words did uneasy things to his chest, much to his chagrin. “Perhaps you’ve been enjoying your time with (Y/N) more than you thought.” Just the idea made unwanted jealousy bubble in his stomach.
Why would he feel that?
James had to bite his tongue to stop himself from saying something rash. From giving himself away.
“Just stay away from her – for a little while. I think you’ve traumatized her; she won’t go across a bridge without someone with her.” He began to retreat, coolness to his tone, wishing to be alone now.
“And let you get ahead? I don’t think so.”
James stopped in his tracks for only a second before thinking better of the situation and leaving the common room.
The remaining three sat in silence for a few minutes, Sirius finally feeling able to let his guard down and appear sulky. Peter flickered his beady eyes between his companions as Remus attempted to study Sirius’ face.
“Are you all right?”
Sirius barely sneered, “What?”
“We were so busy worrying about (Y/N), we didn’t ask how you were.” Remus tilted his head in thought, “You did almost send the girl to her death.”
The unwanted heat in his chest made Sirius stir uncomfortably, “It was a surprise.”
Remus knew better and waited for his friend to build up the courage to continue.
“When she fell over… for a split second – I didn’t know what to do.” He paused and waited to see if someone would stop him. He tried with difficulty to gather his thoughts, “I was terrified. I was angry at myself.”
There was another bout of silence and it appeared that Remus was satisfied with the outcome of his questioning. Sirius was relieved, it was overwhelmingly hard for him to describe his feelings.
“James isn’t going to forgive so easily.”
“I know that.”
“And (Y/N) doesn’t know her fall wasn’t accidental?”
“If she did I doubt she would’ve let me walk her back to her dormitory.” There was a distant look in Sirius as he thought of the memory. He was finally able to get her to smile again right before saying goodnight.

Mary was more skeptical than ever as they trudged through the snow covered grounds. It seemed impossible.
How could both James Potter and Sirius Black be fawning over her best friend?
“And then what did he do?”
“He pointed out the mistletoe and looked at me expectantly. And what was I supposed to do?” (Y/N) mused, almost embarrassed by how much she liked the moment.
“So you kissed him?”
“Don’t sound so disappointed – I thought you were team James from the beginning.”
Mary didn’t respond right away, “How was it?”
(Y/N) appeared to like that question, “Merlin, I’ve never had so many butterflies. He kissed me once, real quick. And it looked like he was going to say something, so I just went for another one!” She kicked a pile of snow, entirely too happy to remark on the few flakes that fell on her face. “And before I knew it, we were on the couch.”
“You didn’t…?”
“No, we just kissed.” (Y/N) said quickly, “But it was the best kiss I think I’ve ever had.”
The retellings of the Christmas weekend were definitely something to behold. Both Black and Potter decided to try and one up the others time with (Y/N). It appeared that Mary was the only one to have noticed. Merlin only knows what Sirius will do once he figured out James had kissed (Y/N).
“Well, what about Sirius? Did you two do anything over the weekend?”
“We spent Sunday with Remus and got in a snowball fight. Sirius shoved snow down my cloak like the git he is. But when we walked back to the castle he asked if I was all right.”
“He does that a lot, doesn’t he? Seems to wait for when no one is around.”
(Y/N) felt defiant, “Sirius doesn’t like people to know he’s a good guy. He has to keep up appearances, you know.”
Mary found the sudden urge to list the pros and cons of the boys laid out before them. “But James has never struggled with showing you how he feels.”
“But have you seen him around the quidditch pitch? I could climb to the moon on the ego he has while on a broomstick.”
“But he also is a gentleman – he carries your books, takes you out to Hogsmeade, brings you treats…”
(Y/N) blew hot air between her numb hands, “Yeah, but no one asks me how I’m doing more than Sirius. And he is determined to make sure I’m not lying; he hates it when I say, ‘I’m fine.’” She fiddled with her pockets as a frown soured her face, “And I’m pretty sure I caught James pining over Lily Evans the other day.”
That startled Mary a bit, “Did they use to go out?”
“No, but James fancied her a lot! Peter told me. She rejected him something fierce.”
“And you think he’s still stuck on her?”
“Maybe.” The grimace didn’t suit (Y/N). “And then there’s Sirius – the perpetual bachelor.”
Mary snuck a smile, “Yeah, but Sirius always has a string of girls wanting to go out with him. He lets his good looks get to his head.”
“Sometimes I think he doesn’t believe he’ll ever find someone,” (Y/N) mumbled, “I know his arrogant, witty side is a front. He almost gets nervous whenever I try to make a move.”
“Really?” Mary dramatized, “I thought Sirius Black never got nervous.”
“That’s cause you haven’t taken the time to get to know him.”
Mary nudged her further, “And what about James? Does he have some secret?”
(Y/N) pondered thoughtfully, “I think he’s scared no one likes him compared to Sirius. He has a good heart and comes from a wealthy family. But he wants to make a name for himself, so he puts everything he has into his friends and quidditch. He gets jealous quite a lot.”
“Interesting.”
“And that’s not even mentioning Sirius and his family. Man, I thought I didn’t get along with my parents, you should look at his.” She found herself taken slower and slower steps, her voice now lowering, “You know his entire family is in Slytherin? And he’s a Gryffindor… that should be enough to speak for his character. He despises what his family represents.”
“I didn’t know that.” Mary was now beginning to understand the predicament that (Y/N) had found herself in.
Both of these boys were setting up a dangerous game. One that was going to end only in heartbreak and guilt. And Mary didn’t like that her best friend was tangled in the middle of it.
“What are you going to do?”
(Y/N) paused, halting her steps. “You mean – who am I going to choose?”
“I don’t think you should let it go on much farther. I think both of them are falling for you and eventually one of them is going to be let down, and you’re going to feel terrible for doing it.”
They stood there ankle deep in snow as the gears turned in (Y/N)’s head. Mary could’ve sworn steam was beginning to come out of her ears.
“I don’t know if I can choose.”
Mary frowned, “Well, you need to explore your options. You obviously care for both of them, now you just need to figure out which one you love.”
(Y/N) swallowed hard at the thought: love.
“I haven’t kissed Sirius yet.”
“No, you haven’t,” Mary continued, helping the thinking aloud process. “But just because you can kiss them doesn’t mean you love them.” She was painfully aware of the numbness creeping into her stone cold feet, but (Y/N) didn’t appear to be.
And another set of footprints was coming their way, crunching in the snow.
“Oh, I think that’s James now. Act as if we haven’t been talking about him this whole time.”
(Y/N) couldn’t help but laugh as they were joined, “Hello, James.”
“Hi, (Y/N) – Mary. How are you?” His cheeks were rosy with the cold, his pale complexion making his ruffled hair stand out. He was staring only at (Y/N) as he asked the question.
She felt her heart throb, “I think my fingers are frostbit, but other than that, perfectly fine.” She laughed his favorite laugh.
“Well, no wonder; you’re not wearing any gloves.” And there was no hesitation as he reached for her hands to warm them up between his. He blew hot air between her fingers and rubbed them together.
(Y/N) was mesmerized, her flushed cheeks growing to down her neck. Mary noticed but didn’t say anything, only smirked.
“Better?” He stared at her with eyes alight with something Mary could only describe as adoring.
(Y/N) smiled, “Much.” She intertwined their fingers, asking him to join them back towards the castle.
~~~
“I think we have a problem.” Remus saw first, peering down the table at where James and (Y/N) were eating together. “I think our friend is losing sight of the goal.”
Sirius sat begrudgingly beside him, “Doesn’t he realize that every time he looks at Lily, (Y/N) notices?”
Speaking of the redhead, Lily Evans made her way down the aisle of seats to take one beside some other Gryffindors. James flickered his eyes to her before returning them to a suddenly much more sullen (Y/N).
Sirius practically growled into his dinner, “If he actually cared about (Y/N), he’d spare her feelings and go for Evans.”
Remus didn’t dare remark how at the beginning of the school year the pair of them were both ignoring (Y/N)’s feelings for a petty competition.
“Don’t be mean, Padfoot,” Peter whispered across the platters, “Just because they’ve kissed…”
He didn’t want the reminder. His fist clenched involuntarily beneath the table. “I can’t believe I’m losing. There’s no way he wants her more than I do.”
Perhaps he meant to say it just to himself, but it was loud enough for Remus to hear. The scarred boy felt sympathetic, looking to Sirius with a wary glance.
“Do you mean that?” Maybe he could give Sirius a much needed epiphany. “You want her?”
There was a silence as Sirius pounded away at his feelings. He felt them creeping up on him – making his heart race, his lungs constrict, his palms sweaty. He never used to feel that way. He was afraid to feel that way.
But he had tried to deny them for months now. After the mistletoe incident during Christmas, he had seemed to lose much of his persistence. His resolve was that he wanted (Y/N). Wanted her badly. But James had gotten there first.
Stupid, wonderful James. Of course she’d go for him.
Sirius looked at his best friend and knew he couldn’t ruin it for him. James deserved to be happy. Sirius couldn’t be selfish. As much as it now pained Sirius to see them together, he knew he wouldn’t forgive himself if he stole (Y/N) right from under James.
But what if she came willingly?
Oh, shut up.
Sirius had simply given up trying to win (Y/N)’s affections. At this point, he was just waiting for the final verdict. He still spent as much time as he could with her without breaking his heart. He just knew that she preferred spending that time with James.
And he was okay with that…
He was learning to be okay with that.
Remus caught himself falling into a pained grimace as he watched the rainbow of emotion reflect in Sirius’ face.
His friend was suffering while the other prospered. “You don’t have to answer. I’ve known it for a while now.”
Sirius swallowed hard, flexing his fists on his knees. “I think we have to give her the ultimatum soon. The Easter holidays are next week – we could give her till after. She could have the whole break to think about it. James and I are staying here anyways, it’ll be perfect.”
Remus still looked at him skeptically, “I should’ve stopped this bet before it got so serious.” They didn’t say anything, and Remus continued, “I think you both didn’t expect to fall for her so easily.”
“She’s easy to love.”
Remus tried not to have such a noticeable reaction. He knew the slightest hint towards that conversation would scare Sirius right off. “Maybe you should talk to her.” He pointed towards the couple rising from their seats, James kissing the back of (Y/N)’s hand.
Sirius didn’t respond as James came waltzing back towards them. He didn’t even see the still sullen look on (Y/N)’s face as she retreated.
“Evening, boys,” James mused, “I would like to say that I’m feeling rather good about my prospects. I do believe I’m going to win this bet.”
Sirius felt his hands shake, “And once you do, are you going back to Evans?”
“Sorry?” James wiped the smirk from his face.
“That was the point, wasn’t it? Get the rebound to make Lily jealous.”
James paused to think of a proper response, “Sure, to make Lily jealous, but that doesn’t mean I’ll go for her again.”
A slow nod, “So you’re planning on going steady with (Y/N).”
Remus flickered his eyes between his two friends, he tried to interpret the look on James’ face. Did he realize what these words were doing to Sirius?
“If she’ll have me, yeah.”
Sirius had to rise from his seat after that. “Excuse me.”
He sped down the aisle of seats, heart beating rapidly beneath his burning chest. There was only one face he wanted to see, one that he wanted to hold. It was almost involuntary how fast he scoured the corridors outside the Great Hall. All he knew was that he wanted to see her. He wanted to tell her, show her.
And there she was continuing her retreat back to her common room.
“(Y/N)!” he sped ever quicker, a painful throb echoing in his chest. He noticed her slow her steps, but not turn to look at him. “What’s going on?”
He was met with a distressed look on her face, “Hello, Sirius.”
“Are you all right?”
There was a flicker of a smile gracing her features, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m not sure.”
“Tell me,” he stated, staring into her downtrodden eyes.
“I don’t know what to do.” When she met his gaze it was like fire. “I – I don’t understand how I can choose.”
Sirius had an inkling about what she was referring too. As always he kept a respectable distance, not wishing to overwhelm her, though the burning in his chest tried to will him to hold her.
“Choose?”
“I’ve noticed James sort of pining over Lily. And when he does it makes me sad. Like I’m not the only girl for him.”
You’re the only girl for me.
“But when it’s just us two it’s like nothing else matters. I really do like him – but he’s not the only one on my mind.”
Sirius swallowed hard, “Yes?”
She stared up at him, guilt plainly visible. “But I don’t exactly know how he feels.” She remembered the way Sirius had held her face back when she tumbled off the owlery tower. The thought made her cheeks redden.
Sirius noticed, feeling that familiar churning in his stomach, something he usually fought against. But his hand betrayed him, reaching out to graze her blush with just his fingertips. His head yelled at him to stop, but his heart yearned to go further.
“And if you knew, it would help?”
“The plainer the better.” Her breathing hitched at the way his gaze melted into hers.
And then he was just inches away, his breath just as unsteady as hers against her lips. The fire seared through them as they connected, (Y/N) going limp but Sirius clamping his hands on either side of her face.
Every ounce of him screamed of desperation, of a longing for this moment. It was making (Y/N) dizzy, her lungs momentarily forgetting how to work. Sirius pulled away, catching his breath and leaning his forehead against hers.
“Does that tell you plain enough?”
She shivered at his whisper, “In the only way you can tell it. That’s always been you, Sirius – few words, full action.” She caught herself smiling but being confused at the contorted look on his face.
“You should take the Easter holidays. Think it through.” He finally backed away, though his hands held onto her for a fraction of a second longer, “We’ll respect your decision, no matter what it is.”
And unable to stand her gaze any longer, he ran off to the solitude of the Black Lake.
Peter shuffled uncomfortably at the Hogsmeade train station, Remus steady at his side. Steady, but concentrating on calming his nerves.
“How long does it take to get off the train?”
Remus sighed, “She’s probably getting every free second she can before facing us.”
The two of them were instructed to escort (Y/N) back to the castle, both James and Sirius agreeing the coming conversation would be handled better nearer to their dormitories.
James was afraid (Y/N) would pull a fast one and choose Sirius, even though they had a more intimate relationship.
Sirius was afraid that (Y/N) would pick James regardless of his moment of vulnerability with her. He couldn’t help but convince himself that she would want someone more apt at demonstrating public displays of affection.
Therefore, the duty was laid to Remus and Peter, the two that would ensure her safety and counsel her where it was needed.
Remus was collecting his thoughts as she quietly stepped off the train and onto the platform. He quickly offered to carry her trunk to the nearest carriage, “(Y/N)! How was your holiday?”
She gave a heavier sigh than expected, “Not long enough.”
Peter tip toed around to give her a hug, “We missed you. All of us.”
She tried to hold back a grimace, but followed them to the carriage, “They haven’t been giving you grief, have they?” There was a pause that confirmed her suspicions, “Of course they would be.”
“They’re anxious to see you,” Remus stated, sitting beside Peter, “They’re worried about you.”
“Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sirius more depressed. And James has dug an imprint in the rug from all his pacing,” Peter prattled, not taking much heed to his words. “It’s been a long week for them as well.”
(Y/N) frowned, “Yeah, I’ve been much the same. Thank you – for meeting me.”
The ride back up to the castle was mostly silent, Peter squirming and Remus remaining rigid. (Y/N) could feel them both wondering the same thing: what was her decision? It sent more anxiety flooding threw her at the thought.
Peter appeared to be getting at his wits end as the school loomed every closer, “(Y/N)… can I ask?”
“Hmm?”
He swallowed, “Who won?”
That took her aback. What an odd way to phrase it. “Won?” Remus attempted to subtly nudge his friend a warning, but (Y/N) quickly caught it. “You mean won my affections? Who beat the other? How silly – you make it sound like a competition.”
She smiled but felt a wave of paralysis at the stony response from the other two. Peter looked absolutely petrified as Remus seemed to collect himself quicker.
“Yes, a very silly way to put it. He meant, who did you choose? Of course.”
“Are you…” she peered at them, her mind overworking. “Are you hiding something from me?”
“No, not at all,” Remus said all too quickly, “We’re just looking out for our friends.”
(Y/N) seemed more and more skeptical. The way these two were sitting uncomfortably put her on edge. There was clearly something going on and she knew exactly who to target for further questioning.
“Peter?”
The small blonde boy widened his eyes in fear, knowing his own resolve will be corrupted immediately. Remus seemed to think this too, closing his eyes to hide his exhausted defeat.
“What are you hiding? Has it got something to do with James and Sirius?”
Peter felt his own head nod without consent from his mind. He also felt a second jab to the ribs from Remus.
“Well, what is it?” She felt her heart beat faster. She knew it had something to do with what she said before. “Is… does it have to do with some competition?”
Peter turned towards his taller friend with a pleading look, very quietly saying, “It was a kind of competition.”
~~~
James and Sirius waited in the grounds near the pumpkin patch that was now filled with spring weeds and flowers.
A new imprint in the dirt spoke of James’ pacing, his hands being wrung before him. He kept straightening his hair to no avail, his skewed glasses falling farther and farther down his nose. He couldn’t understand how Sirius could stand so still near him.
Sirius was a statue, the only evidence of life being the quickened pulse and strenuous breaths working his lungs. He was determined not to show his reaction to her picking James. He was practicing now – practicing in keeping his composure.
It got harder as he saw students begin to flood the school gates. He watched James pause his frantic steps, straining to find their friends. Sirius refrained from doing it too, knowing that if he let himself he would begin to unravel.
James clutched his fidgeting hands together, spotting (Y/N), Remus, and Peter near the back of the crowd. A grin split his features and he bounced on his toes, “There they are!”
The two of them had hardly spoken a word all week, each wondering how their friendship would be after one of them was chosen. It was still hard to feel that the ‘best man should win,’ when each hoped that they’d be picked.
Sirius peered at the three figures making their way towards them across the grounds. Remus and Peter seemed less eager to reach them, carrying a trunk and keeping their heads down. (Y/N), on the other hand, was determinedly marching her way over.
It was plain to see that those steps were fueled with a kind of vigor. A kind of anger. And it seemed like James was beginning to recognize it too. He retreated a few steps to stand beside Sirius.
“Does she look upset to you?”
“It looks like she’s crying,” Sirius muttered. He could feel himself beginning to snap and unravel against his better judgement.
And the closer she got, the truer the assessment was. Her face was blotched and twisted in a kind of fury, one that made her breaths come out in sputters.
“You…” her voice was weak and betrayed.
And both boys had an idea on what was happening, though neither wanted to admit it. James craned his neck to see the ashamed looks on Remus and Peter’s faces.
“Now, (Y/N),” he stated, his anxious excitement plummeting to fear. “I don’t know what you heard…”
Sirius felt the blood drain from his face. What little hope he was experiencing distinguished in an instant.
(Y/N) finally reached them, raising her hand and giving an almighty smack across James’ cheek. She stumbled backward and looked ready to deliver another to Sirius.
James staggered, holding his face, absolutely stunned. But Sirius straightened out, knowing that he deserved it. But (Y/N) couldn’t bring herself to do it again; she resorted to shoving Sirius away, hitting and pounding at his chest where she could.
“You… complete… arrogant… selfish… FUCKS!”
Cracks appeared in Sirius’ heart, his shoulders sinking to block her blows but not to stop her. She fumed, using her full force to push him away and retreat a few steps.
“A bloody COMPETITION? I suppose it was all some grand joke to you two.” She was sobbing now, fresh tears streaming down her already puffy cheeks. “Let’s see if we can get the stupid, naïve girl to fall in love with us – was that it?”
She paused for only a second, not wishing for a response just now, “I should have seen something what with the both of you wanting to suddenly be best friends with me out of the blue – and at the exact same time!” She ran her fingers harshly into her hair, “And it was all a LIE.”
Sirius started to shake his head, but James beat him to the first spoken word, “It’s not like that, (Y/N), not anymore.”
“Not ANYMORE?”
“Honest,” James tried to continue, “At first it was just to see who’d you like more. And now we – we both – feel very, very different.”
(Y/N) had her hands on her hips, not even bothering to wipe away her tears. “And that’s supposed to redeem the fact you did it in the first place?”
“No! Of course not, it’s just…” he looked towards the paralyzed Sirius, “You need to know that regardless of the intentions, we’ve both developed very real feelings for you.”
“Real enough to forget about Lily Evans?” she practically shrieked, “Did the rebound work for you?”
James stuttered, unable to form a worthy enough response. But (Y/N) didn’t need it, the look on his face was good enough. She instead rounded on Sirius, “And you.”
He set his jaw but blinked a few times. The burning, yearning in his chest was now aching – destroying him from the inside out.
“I suppose you think it’s funny trying to kill me to get my attention.”
The air left his lungs, “I… I never – I could never – find that funny.” But the hatred in her eyes was so real he thought nothing he said would take it away. It made him want to cower. “It was foolish and accidental how you fell. It wasn’t supposed to go that far.”
But she didn’t want to hear it. How he wished he could wipe her face clear, to kiss the pain away.
James outstretched a hand, “Please, (Y/N) – let’s go sit and talk. Allow us to apologize.”
She immediately started to shake her head, “I don’t need an apology. I couldn’t trust it anyway. I just wanted to see the look on your faces when I told you my decision. That I’ve made my choice.” She contorted her face into an unflattering sneer, “That neither of you get to win.”
She retreater farther, edging towards the castle, “Don’t you dare speak to me. Don’t you dare look at me. From this day on, you don’t exist in my mind. And you’re going to keep it that way.”
James took a hesitant step towards her but knew it was too late. She was stumbling away, uneasy on her exhausted feet. He felt his own eyes burning, not realizing that tears were flooding them. He let out a breath that stuttered and whimpered.
Sirius thought he could describe without a doubt the feeling of your heart being torn from your chest. He was beyond tears, beyond regret. There was no way he could recover from the despair that now encumbered him. He turned to the pained looks of Remus and Peter.
He saw their lips moving but could hear no noise. He found he couldn’t catch his breath.
This quite possibly could be the biggest mistake that either of them will make in their entire lives.

If I can't have you, nobody can - pt. 9 - final part
A/N: I know it's kind of a shitty ending but I just wanted to end it without all the dramatic affects. Like, let's be honest. This is how it would go because all men are pu**ies.
XX
James walked in his apartment drained. He felt his limbs go numb as soon as he stepped on his threshold. He could barely put the key in but when he did, he opened the door with force, kicked off his shoes and threw himself onto his bed.
The image of Lily's tears haunted him. It wasn't as horrible as he imagined. It was worse, far worse but he couldn't keep deceiving her. He couldn't pretend to love her when he loved you. It was that easy. You can only love one person at the time. Loving both makes him selfish.
There was no doubt on he was to choose. There even wasn't a choice for him. He knew exactly who he wanted and that person was you.
He deserved the slap. Definitely deserved it but Merlin did she had to hit so hard? His cheek was still burning from her hand and it wasn't any less redder than it was before.
He didn't want to see you today either. Tomorrow and for the rest of his life, yes. But today? Today he just wanted to sleep through and get it over with. Despite everything, he still cared about Lily and the time they were together was not just wasted time for him. He cared... cared enough to feel pain in his chest as he did so but that didn't mean he loved you any less. He just needed to grieve a bit for he had lost an amazing woman but love is love, and you can't really choose for who you fall in love with and with you he was head over heels.
"PEEK A BOO!" came a loud voice from the living room. "Prongs?"
"Ugh, noooo..." James grumbled into the pillow. Apparently this day is far from being over.
"Oh, there you are." Sirius smiled as he popped his head into the bedroom. "Alright there, mate?" he jumped on the bed and started bouncing off.
"No." he mumbled into the pillow.
"Hell, who hurt you today? Was it Moody? Was he a bit harsh on you today? Oh wait, we're not Aurors yet." Sirius laughed sarcastically and slapped his forehead. "Must have been-"
"I broke up." he mumbled into the pillow but Sirius couldn't quite hear him.
"You're worker?"
"No, Pads." James turned around to face him. "I broke up..." he paused, watching Sirius' eyes furrow. "... with Lily."
Sirius kept watching him in silence, replaying thoughts and words in his head. "I thought you wanted to marry her?" he stood up and crossed his arms over his chest. He knew the reason why, stuck far back in his head but he wanted James to say it. "Weren't we ring shopping four days ago?"
"I know. I know." James sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed his eyes. "I just... I talked to Remus-"
"oF cOUrsE!" Sirius threw his arms in the air. "And he gave you some Yobe Kenobi wisdom about love and commitment when a man cannot even commit to the fact that he turns into a wolf every full moon."
"Pads, that's not fair." James scolded him. Every one of them knew how much Remus suffered. It wasn't fair of Sirius being ignorant about his friend and Sirius realised that.
"I know..." he looked down in regret. "But can't you- why? You know what don't tell me why. I know why? It's because of (y/n) isn't it?" he glared at James.
"Yes but-"
"I bloody knew it! She's not for you James!"
"How in the bloody hell would you know that?! Huh?! Why aren't you just happy for us?! Why are you pissed?!"
"Because if I can't have her, you shouldn't either! Nobody should!"
And if words could have physical strength, they would push James back a few steps.
"You git!" James stormed to Sirius and pushed him against his chest.
Sirius stared at him for a moment and when James started to push him again, he pushed back first.
"You were selfish all this time!"
"So what if I was?! You and her would never work out because she still has feelings for me!"
"Don't act like a child, Sirius! She's not a 12 year old girl and you're not all mighty God! She's a grown, sensible woman, who doesn't wait for you just to crawl back at your feet. If she would, she would have done it a long time ago but she didn't, did she?!" he shouted. "She moved on and she got her life together or did she sent you a letter or called you that I do not know about?" he continued but Sirius just stared at him, defeated. "She doesn't love you. She doesn't love you because you had rejected her YEARS ago but she does love me. She always loved me because if she didn't, she wouldn't have given me a second chance! So you have no right to be jealous, mate, when you're the one that pushed her away! Not only from yourself but from us too! And there was no reason for that except today that you were just too selfish about it!" he pushed Sirius through the door. "Now, bloody leave! I don't want to see your face for a couple of days because I am furious at you!" James stared at Sirius and Sirius pouted like a little child.
He stomped away and disapparated into thin air.
---
You had laughed when James was telling you this story. He was laying in your lap and angrily complaining over Sirius as a little child as well. He threw his hands in the air and started to get heated as he explained the argument.
"After all I've done for that git!" he turned to the side and furrowed his eyebrows. "That little asshole." he continued to pout as you had continued to laugh.
"Come on, Jamie." you gently caressed his cheek. "We were all just kids when everything happened. We didn't know better, especially Sirius. You were just as stubborn and arrogant as he was."
"I know but still!" he sat up and looked at you, not angry but sad. "If I didn't know better now, I wouldn't have been with you."
You cupped his cheeks and awed at him. "But you are and Sirius is just being dramatic. You know he wouldn't hurt a fly, let alone hurt his best friend."
"I bet you five galleons he will knock on that door tomorrow, if not today with Fizzing Whizzbees and ton of Chocolate Frogs just to apologise."
"He had never apologised in my entire time of knowing him."
"Oh, he doesn't really say it but you know what he's meaning to say."
And just as James was about to answer, there was a knock on the door.
You smiled coyly at James. "Get your wallet, Potter."
James rolled his eyes and smiled at you. He walked to the door and opened them to see a tall man with regretful puppy eyes and candy in his hands. "You just made me lose five galleons, mate." he said and gestured to let him come inside.
"What do you mean?" Sirius smiled as he walked after James, later seeing you sitting on the sofa.
He stopped in his tracks and stared at you. No second movement or proof that he was breathing appeared. He just stood and stared like a linden tree.
"Hello, Sirius." you waved at him.
"Hi." he said than quickly regained his saneness. "Oh, so you're the thief behind the five galleons."
"Guilty." you laughed. "You had always done this whenever you and James had got in the argument. James was ranting to Remus, Peter and I, meanwhile you were out there sneaking to Honeydukes for sorry candy."
"Which always worked in the end." Sirius winked and sat down on the arm chair in front of you. He rubbed his hands together and looked away from you, before facing the uncomfortable topic. "So... he told you..."
"Quite passionately, might I say. I felt as if I was there when he was telling me the story." you teased as James filled himself with Chocolate Frogs and laughed.
"I'm really sorry, (y/n)." he said, causing James' eyes to widen. He had never heard Sirius apologise before but now that he did, it must have been sincere. "I really didn't know what I was doing... or saying... you were just so fun to be around and I guess I didn't want to share you with anybody."
"I get it..." you said, letting your hand fall behind James' neck and looking at him with awe. "We were all just stupid kids and I always wanted us to stay friends." you smiled back at him.
Sirius smiled back. "So you're not mad?"
"I was never mad, Siri. I was just disappointed but everything turned out for the best in the end." you looked back at James, who didn't take his eyes off you since the moment your hand touched his skin.
"Yeah." Sirius said, then stood up and patted his jeans. "Best I leave you two love birds alone then." he said and both of you looked up at him. "I really am happy for the two of you." he said before disapperating away.
Though he said it to the two of you with a smile on his face he never meant it. Why not? Because seeing you with James was the most painful thing he had to witness.
Seeing you there, so grown up, so different from when he last saw you was torturing. He just wanted to pour out of himself the why's and the because's. Oh, how he wanted to hug you and tell you everything but he couldn't. He couldn't have done it because of James.
He had messed up so much for you, for James and for himself that all he had to do was restrain himself of his own emotions. He can never tell you now.
He had his chances and now he doesn't. He would think it was not fair when everything made sense. It was fair. He did have chances, opportunities to tell you the truth but was too late for him now.
James was right. You didn't wait for him. You moved on and everything he made you feel was now gone but everything you made him feel was still inside of him.
You were happy. James was happy and him? Sirius? He was miserable because he had let you slip through his fingers forever.

Chapter Twenty - Wherever You Are
Dread coiled in your stomach that fateful morning as you got yourself dressed and pinned your hair. Reggie was sleeping soundly, letting out little snuffles but still, you picked him up and nuzzled your nose into his fine dark hair as you felt the tears build up behind your eyes. You weren’t aware that you could possibly cry as much as you had done, there were little red rashes beneath your eyes where the salt from your tears had irritated your skin. Your heart seemed to be in a constant state of pain as your husband awaited his trial.
This trial should not be even happening, you were appalled at how James had arrested Sirius for treason, “we’ll be alright, little one,” you whispered to your baby boy, “papa isn’t a traitor, he’s a good man,” you pressed a kiss to Reggie’s little forehead.
James was originally going to hold Sirius’ trial the day after Halloween, but Lily had convinced him otherwise, Lily knew that you wanted nothing more than to be at Sirius’ side. So, the King relented and allowed a few days for you to recover after giving birth to Reggie. Unfortunately, it meant that Sirius would have to spend more time locked in the tower but you knew that Sirius understood.
“Y/N?” a soft warm voice came from the doorway and you looked over with blurred vision to see Andromeda who was smiling at you kindly, “I think the King and Queen are ready to start, I’ll look after the children, because they shouldn’t have to be subjected to such an event.”
You nodded with a sniffle as you placed Reggie into her open, waiting arms, “thank you so much. Are you not coming to the trial?” you muttered, feeling like a shell of yourself.
Andromeda shook her head with a sad smile, “I can’t watch that happen to him, I can’t. He’s not just my cousin, he’s my best friend. I’m so sorry that I can’t be there for you both; I know that he’s not the traitor, he would never betray us. Never. I don’t know what James is thinking having him arrested.”
“You are so amazing, Andromeda, we are so blessed to have you in our lives and we appreciate you so much,” you tried to smile but you feared that it came out as more of a grimace.
Andromeda leaned forward to kiss your cheek with a sweet sad smile, “whatever happens today, it’s been an honour to serve two people who are completely made for each other, two people who are soulmates. Good luck.”
You felt tears sliding down your cheeks, stinging at your sensitive skin, you adored Andromeda, you couldn’t have got by without her, “let’s just hope that the King sees sense and does the right thing. He must know that his best friend could never do this to him, he just wants someone to blame, he sees enemies where there are friends, and it’ll be his undoing,” you mumbled with a tight smile as you departed from your chambers.
You would never admit it out loud but you had a strange sense of foreboding, a horrible feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach. You couldn’t help but feel that something was going to go dreadfully wrong.
As you made your way to the Throne Room where the trial was being held, you just couldn’t understand why on Earth James would believe that Sirius was a traitor. What had happened to make him believe that? Snape was already in the dungeons for committing treason. Under coercion, he had admitted that he had been working for Voldemort but apparently he had told him nothing of the prophecy. You supposed that he had to be lying, he just had to be. According to Lily, the evidence they had against Sirius was damning but it was a lie or a set up, it just had to be.
The atmosphere was heavy and full of dread as you walked into the Throne Room and Lily gave you a brave smile from where she stood at James’ side. James had a grim tight look on his face; the King that you had first met a few springs ago was kind and benevolent. That King was no more, it seemed like his heart had hardened.
Your heart broke when the guards roughly dragged Sirius into the room, showing him no mercy. The past few days that he’d spent in the Tower had seemed to age him considerably, his eyes were starting to take on a haunted look but they softened when he looked at you. You tried to offer him a small smile.
As Sirius was pushed to his knees before the King, James glared at him as he produced a letter, “you’ll remember writing this, I bet,” he snarled and began to read the letter out loud “’Lord Voldemort, in regards to my last letter, you will now know how to break Dumbledore’s enchantments. There are underground caverns and a secret entrance on the West side of the castle. They will lead you into the royal chambers and you can complete your work. Your faithful servant, Sirius Black, Duke of Bedford.”
James tossed the chilling letter at Sirius’ feet, “if it hadn’t been for Peter telling us of the conversation he overhead you having then we would be dead. We managed to prepare and we managed to defeat Voldemort when he came after us. We were supposed to be your friends, your sovereigns. How could you do this to us? How could you plot to kill our son?”
“But, I didn’t!” Sirius shouted, “I didn’t have a conversation of this nature with anybody! I didn’t write that letter, I wouldn’t!”
“Then how do you explain the fact that your seal is on the letter?!” James demanded.
You saw Sirius’ face falter for just a moment and you almost winced, hoping that James didn’t catch it, “my seal was stolen.”
“A likely story,” Remus spoke up, his voice breaking and he looked like he was on the verge of tears.
“Where is Peter? He’s lying to you! I saw him sneaking around the castle with a hooded figure!”
“Of course,” James mockingly slapped a hand to his forehead, “blaming the victim is the right thing to do, you’re just trying to save your own skin. Peter was found dead in the hallways, shortly after he came to warn us of your plan.”
You barely managed to conceal a gasp, Peter was dead? “I didn’t kill him,” Sirius whispered, “I was with my wife who was giving birth to our third child!” he glanced at you and you gave him an encouraging nod.
James looked at you before looking back at Sirius, narrowing his eyes, “the midwife says that you left a couple of hours after the birth, around the time that Peter was murdered, he was killed with your ruby encrusted dagger.”
Sirius swallowed nervously, “I lost that dagger shortly after coming back from our last battle with Voldemort,” that was the truth, you remembered Sirius lamenting after its loss. It was clear that someone was setting him up. Why didn’t James see that? “And the reason for my leaving? It was because I went to see if my twins were awake so they could meet their baby brother!”
“And on the way back, you saw an opportunity to kill Peter!” it was clear that James was hitting Sirius hard with the accusations in the hope that Sirius would confess.
“No!” Sirius took a deep breath, “you’re my best friend, you always have been and I would never do anything to hurt you or your family because you’re my family too, please, you have to believe me,” the tone of Sirius’ voice was pleading but James looked unmoved, which annoyed you.
“The evidence is damning, Sirius. It was your seal, your letter and your dagger, you had the means to kill Peter and betray us. What did you think would happen? Did you think Voldemort would put you on the Throne when he killed us?” James hissed but Sirius said nothing but you could see that he was crying you just wanted to hold him. James glanced over to you, “we found no evidence that Y/N was involved,” cold dread shot through your body and your vision blurred.
“She had nothing to do with any of this,” Sirius glanced at you with tear soaked cheeks and the small smile that he gave you broke your heart.
James nodded, offering you a sympathetic look, “then I’m sorry that you’re married to a traitor,” anger boiled in your veins at James’ words and it was an effort to keep your face straight. He glanced back at Sirius, “Sirius Black, I absolve you of your lands and titles; you are no longer the Duke of Bedford. I charge you with treason and I sentence you to hang by the neck until dead,” Lily gasped in surprise as she looked at her husband.
You felt like you were going to be sick and you rushed forwards to kneel at James’ feet, taking Sirius’ hand in yours, “please, Your Majesty, I beg you, don’t kill him! Think of the children, please,” tears streamed down your cheeks and Lily shot James a meaningful look.
James sighed and bowed his head, glaring at Sirius, “very well, you have an amazing wife who begs for your life even though you’re a traitor,” Sirius just looked at the floor and in that moment you hated James for hurting him. You couldn’t imagine how hard it was to endure this from his best friend, “you’re going to spend the rest of your life in a cell. Take him away,” he nodded to the guards.
You cried out in anguish as the guards began to drag your beautiful husband away. How were you going to live without him? “I love you, Sirius.”
Sirius choked on his tears, “I love you too, and please remember me!”
“Of course!” you sobbed.
You didn’t even get to kiss him one last time; you would never forgive James for breaking up your family. Sirius was innocent; you would bet your life on it.
-----------------
Over the next couple of years that Sirius spent in the Tower, he was full of despair and anger, he couldn’t quite believe that James had locked him away; he couldn’t understand why James hadn’t believed him. How could James think that Sirius could ever hurt his friends? What hurt the most was the fact that he couldn’t see the love of his life or his children, the pain was almost unbearable. He couldn’t even see the grounds from the tiny window in his cell so he couldn’t even catch the slightest glance of Y/N.
In that dank, dark cell Sirius was all alone, he was practically withering away. He wanted his wife and he wanted his children. Reggie had only been a couple of days old when Sirius had been thrown into the Tower, Reggie wouldn’t even remember him.
The guards were particularly cruel; they told Sirius everything that was happening at court. They had told him that the King was forcing Y/N to remarry so she wouldn’t bring shame upon England because she was the wife of a traitor. Sirius had been close to throwing up at this news and he died inside, the knowledge that someone else was going to love his wife killed him inside. A few weeks later, the guards grumbled as they told Sirius that the man that Y/N was supposed to marry had died in a hunting accident. It sounded awful but at the sound of that news, Sirius could breathe again.
10 Years Later
Sirius was rudely awakened by the guards pounding on the bars of his cell, their voices filled with glee, “oi! Wake up, you have some visitors,” Sirius groaned and walked over to the bars to see the guards leering faces, “best make it a good goodbye, you’ll never see your family again after today. Your pretty little wife is going to marry the Austrian Prince.”
The pain that shot through Sirius’ chest almost made his knees buckle and tears stung at his eyes, he backed away from the bars so his family could enter. The breath was stolen from his lungs when his family walked into the cell and the door was closed behind them. Y/N was so beautiful and his children were growing up, and he’d missed it all.
“Sirius!” Y/N cried out as she ran to him and Sirius gathered her up in his arms, after 12 years, she was in his arms again. Once more, she was breathing life back into him, “I’ve missed you so much I love you,” she sobbed into his chest before she cupped his face and drew him into a passionate kiss, her tears running over his lips.
“I missed you too, I missed all of you, I love you,” he pressed his forehead against hers, grinning for the first time in 12 years, it was a wonder that he still remembered how to, he looked at his beautiful children with a smile as Elena and Johnathan ran into his arms, their faces bright with recognition. Reggie smiled at him with a blank look on his face but there was love in his eyes, “look at you three, all grown up.”
“We wish you could have been there, father,” Reggie smiled before hesitantly walking towards him and pulling him into a hug. Sirius smiled as he hugged his son tightly, “it’s good to meet you,” Reggie whispered.
Sirius’ smile dropped a second later when he remembered why they were there, “you’re marrying a Prince? Congratulations.”
Y/N rolled her eyes with a giggle and she lowered her voice so the guards wouldn’t hear, “I am never going to marry another, Lily and James just thinks that I am. The Prince doesn’t want to marry me either, he prefers the company of men,” she blushed, “but he believes you’re innocent, he’s a good man.”
“He believes I’m innocent?” Sirius asked, feeling gobsmacked, he was also elated that Y/N wasn’t going to remarry.
“Yes, and he wants to help, we’re getting you out of here tonight, we’ve got a ship leaving the docks at midnight, the Prince will give us sanctuary in Austria.”
Sirius was excited to get out of here, to feel the sun on his skin again, breaking him out of his cell would be dangerous but he glad that Y/N had an ally, but there was something that bothered him, “you’re coming with me? I don’t want to ruin your lives.”
Johnathan sighed as he rolled his eyes, “come on father, we’re going wherever you do. We’re not letting you go alone.”
“But you’ll always be having to hide, that’s no life for you, any of you,” Sirius bit his lip; he wanted to believe that it was possible but it just wasn’t.
Elena took his hand, “papa,” she whispered, “we love you and we’re a family. We’ve been apart for 12 years; you’re insane if you think we’re not going with you. We want to know you and for you to know us.”
Sirius teared up and sniffled as he looked over at his wife who grinned and cupped his cheeks, “we’ll be here an hour before midnight, the guards won’t be a problem. Leave them to us, I love you.”
“I love you too,” he grinned and kissed Y/N deeply before hugging all of his children in turn, excited to be in the world again. The plan was set and at midnight, he was successfully on a ship with his family by his side and a strong ally at his back. This wasn’t how he thought his life was going to be, he never thought he would be running from James’ court but here he was. They were going to be okay. Sirius was free, they were all free, and most importantly, they were together.
