The Mythological Secrets Behind Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun
It is not new that we see JSHK rooted in Shintuist culture, along with this culture, we have the classical Gods represented, in addition to, of course, some common items related to this.
But there are some points in particular that I wanted to delve into a little and the similarities represented. But, first of all, let's connect the reasoning to the main points before we get to the Gods.
The thread of the story
1 - Tsukasa's fate = sacrifice himself, he sacrifices himself and stays in the house (If he can see supernatural things, then he was close to death, as mentioned by Hanako, people can only see supernatural things if they have a sixth sense (like exorcists) or when death is close).
2 - Nene and Kou finds the red house and convinces him to come back.
3 - Tsukasa comes back.
4 - Temporal paradox.
5 - Creates an alternative timeline full of errors and chain consequences (causing deaths of people who shouldn't die).
6 - At some point Amane decides to kill the family (theory) and sets the house on fire.
7 - It creates a "curse". (everyone who enters the house dies or disappears).
8 - Somehow Hanako becomes a supernatural being and loses control or does something really bad at some point, to the point where the Minamotos have to seal him and create the seven mysteries.
9 - Kako had to go back in time for some reason (to make Hanako forget some things).
10 - Hanako now plays a role, the leader, but at the same time he is the traitor (indicating that there are two Gods).
11 - He along with Tsukasa want to break the cycle of yorishiros and free themselves from this "prison" so that they can save themselves, Tsukasa wants to save Amane and Amane wants to save Tsukasa.
12 - So, Tsuchigomori is the guy who destroys the butterfly effect, but for some important reason, he will probably sacrifice himself for something in the end.
13 - And Nene, the "mermaid" girl who has a bond with Hanako. And let's remember that the entity is from the water, the tentacles and the people or their souls screaming on the other side of the window in the last chapter, you can see the air bubbles coming out of their mouths, which suggests that they are in the water.
14 - Entity from the well + tentacles + water = entity/God of the water that grants wishes. Like the classics, where you throw a coin in the well to make a wish.
15 - Hanako gets a mermaid scale and gives it to Nene to create a bond, so maybe the scale is directly linked to the entity. Even though we saw the mermaid, she is still a supernatural being.
16 - The mermaid giving up on Nene after the fish died was like a warning from the entity, since it was Tsukasa who killed it. We saw a giant fish in the window of the red house, so maybe the entity is the strongest supernatural being that can influence the lesser supernatural beings.
17 - So, all connected, Nene being able to remove the seals, being a kannagi, coming from a mysterious family, makes me wonder about her connection with the entity.
18 - The Minamotos know something, and they still "help" Hanako because it seems to be necessary. Teru was happy when the supernaturals disappeared, but he was the one who decided to bring them back, even though he didn't want to.
19 - So, there's a reason for him to keep Hanako, as if it was necessary for him to do something, but Teru tries to keep him under control.
20 - In the end, there are probably two Gods (theory): The God of the yorishiros and the God (entity) beneath the red house.
21 - Hanako should work for the God of the yorishiros to receive redemption, but he is the traitor, that is, he works for the God of the red house, because he intends to save Tsukasa. Therefore, the twins want to remove all the seals to "free" the entity and get a wish.
22 -What we are seeing now is all the yorishiros being removed while we follow the stories of their owners, for now, away from the main story of the twins.
The Gods who represent the twins
Now that you understand where we are in the story, let's move on to the mythological part of things and the connection between the twins and Gods that haven't been mentioned yet.
Amaterasu: She is the Shinto goddess of the sun. The name Amaterasu is derived from Amateru, which means "shining in the sky." Her full name is Amaterasu-o-mi-kami, which means "Glorious Goddess Who Shines in the Sky."
Amane: A name derived from Amaterasu, (not literally, but a name that would resemble the name Amaterasu to show a slight connection with the Sun Goddess) he is also depicted as the sun in some panels of the manga, as well as being the opposite of Tsukasa, the moon.
Tsukuyomi: Also known as Tsukuyomi-no-kami, he is the god of the moon in Shinto and Japanese mythology. The name Tsukuyomi is a combination of the Japanese words moon/month (tsuki) and "to read; to count" (yomu). Another interpretation of his name is the combination of "Moonlit Night". Tsukuyomi is the god of the moon in Japanese mythology, brother of Amaterasu and Susanoo.
Tsukasa: often represented in the manga in some panels as the moon itself, as he himself mentions being the opposite of Amane, who is represented as the sun. The name Tsukasa also refers to the name of the god of the moon, similarly to Amane's name.
The two are siblings in mythology as well.
The mythology
The creation myth of the Shinto tradition in Japan is wrapped up in a beautiful and tragic love story between the divine couple Izanagi and Izanami.
Heaven and Earth separated during this long creative process, so Izanagi and Izanami, representatives of what was then the newest divine generation, took on the task of generating life in the immense primordial liquid environment.
Izanagi and Izanami decided to improve their creation, molding the relief with mountains, spreading vegetation to cover the soil and creating rivers to promote fertility.
The rest of creation required carnal acts practiced between Izanagi and Izanami, which has a strong symbolism because it highlights the union between the masculine and feminine for the generation of life and procreation.
They generated divine children after the islands were conceived, each of them associated with important aspects associated with nature.
When Izanami gave birth to Kagutsuchi, the god of fire, she ended up burning to death during childbirth. The father was furious and murdered his son.
Izanagi tried to rescue his beloved from the underworld, the dark Yomi. The exits to Yomi are guarded by terrible creatures and are where the dead go to, apparently, rot for an indefinite period of time. Once fallen there, the soul can never return to the land of the living.
Upon arriving there, Izanami asked her husband not to look at her, to return to Earth and to wait while she tried to escape from Yomi.
The impatient Izanami does not obey and looks at his wife, unrecognizable and with a frightening cadaverous appearance, deteriorated and infested with agents of decomposition.
Now she was a form of decomposing flesh that gave birth to several demons, with worms and demonic creatures slithering over her body. She, realizing her husband's audacity, orders the demons to chase him.
Izanagi flees from the demons, and rolling a huge stone, traps them in Yomi. Izanagi, furious at Izanami's betrayal, uses the powers of the sun to destroy all the demons. Thus began the existence of death, caused by Izanami's pride.
After Izanagi left his wife Izanami, locked in the Shinto underworld of Yomi, he purified himself in a spring and accidentally gave birth to three children.
The sun goddess Amaterasu was born from Izanagi's left eye, the moon god Tsukuyomi was born from his father's right eye, and the god of the sea and storms Susanoo was born from Izanagi's nose.
Where are the similarities in JSHK?
Let's compare.
Mitology
Izanami: Izanami is related to death and she's trapped in the world of Yomi, the world of the dead, she hides her appearance because of her cadaverous form, like she did with her husband.
JSHK
Entity: In JSHK we also don't see the entity, which stays in the dark.
And we have the sacrifices, which are linked to the same reasoning, gradually losing their human form and becoming cadaverous beings.
In JSHK, the entity is said to be very strong, it is weak because it is sealed, "trapped", just like Izanami is trapped in the underworld and cannot return.
Second possibility about the entity
Mitology
Serpent Yamata no Orochi: was a colossal dragon with eight heads and eight tails. According to legend, Yamata no Orochi terrorized the Izumo region, demanding that a young girl be sacrificed to him every year.
In the story, a couple's daughters were sacrificed, leaving only the youngest one alive. The dragon was killed by Susanoo when he tried to save the young woman from being sacrificed. He fell in love with her and married her.
JSHK
The entity demands sacrifices with young women, usually from the same family, since Kannagis come from families that offer to give one of their daughters for sacrifice.
The representation of marriage and Sumire may be linked to the meaning of Sumire's desire to be saved, directly reflected in the mythology of the serpent.
When Suzanoo fell in love with the woman who was going to be sacrificed, he saved her and got married with her.
In Sumire's case, she was not saved and did not marry Hakubo, as she wished. A tragic version of the story.
Implying that the entity of Sumire's time was perhaps the serpent.
Let's continue with the comparisons.
Mitology
Izanagi: He was responsible for imprisoning Izanami in the world of the dead, and tried to keep her imprisoned.
JSHK
The God of Yorishiro: the one who values maintaining seals and mysteries, apparently to keep "something" imprisoned, implying that it is in fact the entity of the red house that is officially sealed.
Let's continue with the comparisons.
Mitology
Susanoo: Susanoo is the god of the sea and storms, son of Izanagi and brother of Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, and Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon.
JSHK
Yashiro: Often depicted as a mermaid and having a direct link to Hanako because of the scales, we can associate her with the myth of Susanoo.
We may still have doubts about Nene's association with him, but Suzanoo had a direct connection with Amaterasu (the sun goddess we are representing as Amane).
At a certain point, Suzanoo goes to Amaterasu's house to resolve a conflict between them.
To link this to JSHK, if you notice, when Hanako throws Nene in fish form into the sky (at the end of the anime) a small storm appears.
Some people theorized that it represented her crying, but at the end, the clouds appear next to the sun and the rain begins. Representing the "storm".
Furthermore, Susanoo is the God who saves the young woman from being sacrificed to the serpent. We see this represented in the moment when Nene is the only one who can "save" Sumire from being devoured by Hakubo, but in this case, she does not. Referring again to the tragic side of mythology and Sumire's story.
Let's continue with the comparisons.
Mitology
The red house and yomi
Yomi is the Japanese word for the world of the dead in Japanese mythology and Shintoism. Its exits are guarded by terrifying creatures and it is where the dead go to apparently rot for an indefinite period of time. Once fallen there and fed in the fire at the center of Yomi, the soul can never return to the land of the living.
Similar to the red house specifically over the abyss where the sacrifices that fell began to rot and could not return.
Water as a Symbol of Transition and Cleansing
Water plays an important role in the series, particularly through its association with Hanako’s past and its connection to bathrooms and wetlands – liminal places between the world of the living and the dead. In Shinto, water is a symbol of purification and renewal, something that is also explored in the story of Hanako, a spirit trapped by regrets who seeks redemption.
The aquatic environment can be interpreted as an allusion to Susanoo, a deity associated with the sea and storms.
Light and Darkness – Themes of Life and Death
Just as Amaterasu represents light and order, some elements of the series suggest a cycle between hope and despair, or redemption and regret. Hanako-kun is a spirit who carries both light (his moments of affection for Nene) and darkness (his tragic secrets and violent past). This duality may echo the myth of Amaterasu, where light and darkness must find balance.
The Seven Mysteries as Guardians and Forces of Chaos
Just as the kami (gods) of Japanese folklore have different personalities and roles, the Seven Mysteries in the series play specific roles that resemble the forces of nature. Some are benevolent and seek balance, while others represent chaos and danger. This multiplicity is characteristic of Japanese myths, where there is no clear division between good and evil.
Although Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun does not directly mention Amaterasu or Susanoo, the themes of water, purification, light, and darkness found in the series can be seen as a subtle reference to these gods and the natural forces they represent.
In addition, we must add urban legends.
Influences of Japanese Folklore on Hanako-kun
Seven Mysteries of School (七不思議, Nana Fushigi) One of the main inspirations for the series are the legends of the "Seven Mysteries of School," popular stories told among Japanese students about supernatural occurrences that happen in schools. Each mystery usually involves ghosts or strange events, and each school may have its own versions.
In the Hanako-kun universe, these Seven Mysteries are essential, as the spirits that govern each of them have influence over the spirit world and the school.
Spirit World and Boundaries Between Realities In Hanako-kun, there is a strong separation between the world of the living and the spirit world. Places in the school, such as bathrooms or forgotten rooms, function as portals that connect these two worlds. This idea reflects the traditional Japanese concept that certain places, such as temples, cemeteries, or ruins, are meeting points between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Supernatural Elements Inspired by Yōkai and Spirits
Many of the characters and creatures featured in the series are based on or inspired by yōkai (supernatural creatures) and onryō (vengeful spirits) from Japanese folklore. The series also introduces concepts of its own, such as:
Tsukumogami: Ancient objects that gain life and consciousness after 100 years. Some characters in the series resemble this idea, as spirits are tied to specific places or objects in the school.
Onryō: Hanako is a spirit with a tragic past, reflecting the idea of vengeful ghosts or those trapped on Earth due to unresolved regrets.
Akuma and Mononoke: Some spirits are aggressive and need to be purified or controlled, as is the case with several antagonists in the series.
Spiritual Hierarchy and the Conflict Between Mysteries Within the story, the Seven Mysteries have a hierarchy and follow specific rules that govern the coexistence of humans and spirits. The main conflict of the series arises when the mysteries begin to rebel, seeking to change these rules and gain more power. This hierarchical structure is an original creation of the series, but it recalls the idea that kami and yōkai have their own laws and orders in Japanese folklore.
While Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun doesn't explicitly follow a specific Shinto or Buddhist mythology (so far), it does draw heavily from Japanese urban legends, the Seven Mysteries of School, and concepts from Japanese spiritual folklore such as yōkai, tsukumogami, and onryō.
The series creates its own mythology by combining these traditional elements with a unique narrative.
Which is particularly fascinating!!
It was a fun journey to find these new details to add to the events of the series. Of course, despite the associations and similarities, don't take anything in this post too seriously or canonical, it's just for fun.
There are probably many more details that still need to be discovered or included, (like the mythology about the Minamoto family, and even some common supernatural beings, like Tsuchigomori, who represents Tsuchigumo, but well, if I talk about all of them, this post will be huge).
For this post, that's enough.
If you've read this far, I hope you've had fun!

The idea of Kou being Mitsuba's yorishiro is so fun, so full of posibiliities, but for as popular as the theory is, I don't see many people go wild about how it could add to Kou's narrative with Hanako.
The potential is off the charts! I know the manga no longer care about their relationship, but i sure do, so I'll ramble on some of my favorite delusions.
Hanako already has a lot of conflict handling the idea of ripping out Tsukasa's seal, and while I do understand killing him brings out Hanako's trauma from his Amane days, it is clear the main reason he doesn't want to do it is cause he still has affection for his bro and doesn't want to kill him forever. He had been hiding and trying to create some distance from his brother for decades and he still lost the 'I don't care' war.
Kou is someone he only started to distance himself from this year. He hasn't spent much time with Kou, all things considered, but he is already so hopelessly attached. Can he kill Kou to get his dream? I personally don't think so.
I do think he would try something reckless though, maybe try harder to make Kou exorcise him, which would not go well.
If Hanako being unable to destroy Kou is a 'strong feeling, just trust me' kind of deal. Kou is a 'he canonically would not be able to exorcise Hanako, no matter how much he wants to be able to' kind of boy
A confrontation also has a possibility of paralleling this scene, and I would go crazy:
Cause that scene was to make Kou wake up, and notice murder is serious, not easily forgivable.
Kou had a whole arc about grieving and the value of being alive since then. So Kou would not be as naive.
He would understand just how awful the idea of Hanako's goal involving his destruction would be, just as much as how badly exorcising Hanako would affect Nene, and that's one hell of a conflict.
TLDR: this ain't an analysis/prediction or anything, they just make me ill and I go crazy when i think about them
#either dying would affect nene but kou probably doesn't think he is 'as valuable to her as hanako' cause he is kou#idk i just got hit by the hanakou spirit and decided to let it into the wild this time#hanako#toilet bound hanako kun#jibaku shounen hanako kun#tbhk#hanakou#jshk#kou minamoto

CHAPTER 111 OF TBHK!
I hate TBHK.
MY POOR BOY, do not listen to your brother he’s mentally ill, he’s not in his right mind.
I like how Tsukasa calls people weird when they don’t know what they want. Like with Kou when he was in the Red House.
Amane is weird, he says he hates Tsukasa, but he can’t stand when they’re apart. Such a weirdo, not knowing what he wants.
For the people who say that this proves Tsukasa is fake, please reread the Red House arc again, especially the last part.
Like mother like son though, I guess. Their mother also thought Tsukasa was a fake.
Even though the change of Tsu is visible after being in the Red House and merging with the dark entity, he’s still Tsukasa.
Tsukasa and the entity resign in the same body, they are the same person now.
Amane’s so sensitive.
He’s not able to handle the rejection. Tsukasa still wants to leave, even after Amane’s tried to tell him they can never be together again ( And he doesn’t want that ), his feelings didn’t reach his brother. Tsukasa still wants to leave him.
He’s not in the right mind, coming up with this conclusion is just showing his instability.
And, in the Manga Up translation Tsukasa actually yells “Amane, behind you!”
But now it’s kind of dull. Interesting, though?
Maybe Iro just doesn’t what Tsu to yell or scream or something.
I like that Kako says ‘so-called imposter’. He knows Tsukasa isn’t a fake, it’s what inside of him.
And the fact Hanako still moves to protect him and Tsukasa, even after calling him a fake.
TSUKASA GRABBING HANAKO LIKE HE WAS GOING TO MOVE AND PROTECT HIM. OH MY GOD.
Gay a**.
Kako’s Santa Claus.
What does he mean by ‘eating away’ at Kamome?
The entity is the root of the problem. But what problem?
We aren’t talking about the yorishiros…. The clock? Natsuhiko destroyed the clock though?
What is the entity doing?
I’ve heard people had a theory about this. Congrats, you all were correct!
I didn’t know what the entity was at all. Now we have an idea.
I wonder how it got to the Yugi’s house then?
It’s not good for supernaturals or humans.
Then, I wonder if it’s ever affected Tsukasa before. As a human, and as a supernatural. Or maybe it hasn’t, since they’re the same person.
Now they’re in 1968.
The Clock Keepers are trying to prevent whatever happened here, and make a new presents.
They could have went back to when Tsukasa granted wishes to the dark entity under his house. They could have went to the time Tsukasa got back from the Red House. Even when he got murdered by his brother.
But, they went back to when they were just 12 years old.
What happened then?
What happened during that time, that’s supposed to be the root of why all of this is happening, whatever is happening?
At least Nene knows something is up, she always does.
I’m hoping she can at least do something to stop the Clock Keepers.
Maybe, that means working with someone to stop this, she can’t do this by herself.
Maybe, a certain Yugi? Tsukasa, purhaps?
This is what he meant.

Hellooo!!
Can I request hanako, tsukasa, sakura, kou and mitsuba x reader who is calm and can handle things by herself and strong enough to defeat supernaturals
Hope you can do it and take care!!
!! : in this reader is wrote with she / her pronouns but yall can see them with they / them or he /him pronouns as always
a s / o who can handle things by herself
; hanako :
he's impressed by how calm you are ; there's always something chaotic going on in the school and your calm personality really helps him to relax a bit , though he will try to fluster you just to see your calm act drop off
also the fact that you can handle supernaturals by yourself does really help him , he knows you'll be just fine and doesn't have much to worry about , though at the end he will always check you for some injuries. When he sends Yashiro to destroy the yorishiros he asks you to cover her back
Sometimes he tries to save you and kill off the supernatural before you do and take you in his arms so it can seem like the prince saving the princess kind of scenario ( we all know you'll be the prince and him the princess )
; kou :
you're like the opposite of him and he adores it ; he loves you and your calm attitude and how it contrasts with his energetic one , you always help him to calm himself down and it works !! Even Teru adores you and always asks you to keep an eye on his brother so that he doesn't get himself in some troubles.
The fact that you can handle supernaturals even if you're not an exorcist amazes him more , he's always shocked to see you fighting bad spirits and looking cool while you do it , though even if he knows that you can handle yourself he tries to protect you anyway
You being this strong makes him overthink about you thinking of him like a weak exorcist , that one day you'll leave for someone better and that can actually protect you without letting you risk ; please give him a kiss and reassure him :((
; mitsuba :
at first he joked about you " not having feelings " because how can you be so calm ??? When in reality he loves you personality and being around you ; being the third mistery of school and dealing with the broadcasting room members can be quite exhaustive , so when he feels overwhelmed he comes to you for a bit of peace
he wants you to protect him from the supernaturals even if he's literally a school mistery ... but the anxiety of you getting hurt because of him makes his " skill " ( ? ) protect you ; he will start to say how much strong he was for protecting you and such when he was just shitting his pants tbh
Tho of course he doesn't want you to be in danger and will stop you if the enemy looks too much for you
; mitsuba :
he " lives " to try to piss you off , just like his brother but worse ; sure he loves your behavior but at the end its not really funny for him to see you always calm and collected ; its in his nature to piss off people after all
He wants to see you fighting supernaturals so bad , he'll watch your moves with sparkles in his eyes and when you win he'll hug you and compliment you. Though if he sees you are in difficulty he'll slay the supernatural with a single move and act like nothing happened
; sakura :
Trust me she loves and adores you so much because of your personality , finally someone who doesn't scream every day and just causes troubles here and there. You're the one she talks to you most , not just because you're her s / o , but because she really loves your company in general
She's not really happy when you fight off supernaturals , you're good and all , and your skills are impressive of course , but she can't help to be a little anxious for you when you come back ; you always have to do a spin in front of her just to see if you you're injured or something

Ok. There's something going on and I need to talk about it.
We've all seen that AidaIro is posting new art every day, and on the 18th there will be a new chapter.
But I noticed something, all these arts are about the last arc and are telling the story of it again.
Let me show you
The first one we had was on chapter 111, which shows Yashiro. Everything is normal, but behind her we can see typical theater spotlights, it could just be something mundane or reference her school play rehearsals. Well we started with this.
So we have this art of 12y Tsukasa. Referencing when Yashiro and Mitsuba ended up in the past and found 12y Tsukasa talking to them. He said a rumor about the big clock that further opened the theme of this arc, really an omen for everything.
This art by Sakura is worth mentioning, as she is part of the broadcast gang. She is behind everything, and theories about her being the god or something powerful are increasing more and more. It's worth mentioning that she wished something for Tsukasa, everything he's doing is because of her (because of Amane too, but he has a bond with Sakura). Sakura is an extremely important piece in this puzzle.
Let the fun begin! Next in the series we have Mitsuba and Kou enjoying their time at the festival. Eating and playing together. We were informed, the festival has started.
More moments at the festival. This scene happened in the manga, it is the beginning of the festival that we see. Hanako and Yashiro in the haunted house made by Kou's class. Until that moment everything was normal (or so we thought).
This one is curious. We only see seal Tsukasa in this arc after the plan is initiated. But I believe he was also out there enjoying his last moments. And you can tell that it's really Tsukasa and not the creature. Well, now we're getting close.
Ohhh look what we have here! President and vice-president enjoying the festival as well, despite their work they still managed to find some time to have fun. Natsuhiko had already confronted Akane earlier and Teru had already discovered the black crane, they were probably already alert for anything suspicious. But, everything's still normal.
We return to Sakura, now in her maid outfit. We also have Natsuhiko's first appearance in these arts. This was possibly before or during the festival, but following the chronological line it must have been during. Note that until then this was the only art that did not have a black border (I will talk about this later). Moving on to the next...
From here things started to get serious. The plan had begun. This moment happens in chapter 105. Blood had started to spread throughout the auditorium and Hanako noticed that something was wrong. We are just a few steps away from entering No.1 boundary.
And finally we have today's art. The revelation of the immortal human, Natsuhiko. Breaking the timeline, in this art we go back to chapter 104, where Natsuhiko spreads his blood across the clock, thus executing the plan to go after the last yorishiros.
And these were all the arts released so far, the arts that reference the arc in this case. They all seem to be retelling the story of the Festival arc. Now why? Why would AidaIro be recapping the last arc?
We know that the past has changed and everything has a chance of being different from what we know. We go back to the beginning of the festival, where nothing had happened yet. Therefore, none of these events had happened, if everything really changed, the arts are telling an alternative version of history, the version we know.
Moving from analysis to theory... did you notice that almost all arts have a black border? Black borders are used to indicate flashbacks, the past in JSHK. Now, why would they be using this artifice? Assuming the present has changed, this would be the past. But not a past like something that happened years ago, but a past that no longer exists, in the sense of what it was before this current one. That's why the black borders, indicating that this would be the past.
What breaks this theory is Sakura's art in her maid outfit, as it doesn't have a black border. Maybe the borders are part of the new AidaIro style and are something made to style the arts, or actually have a connection to something. Well, that part is just a crazy theory.
But what do you think of this analysis? The images seem to be telling the arc of the festival all over again, and for what reason? Maybe we'll find out on the 18th, when chapter 112 comes out.

Thoughts on the new chapter?
so many!!!! we got so much thematic/character stuff and a lot of lore implications as well!! I’ll try my best to cover all my thoughts!!
mitsuba SHINED this chapter he was GLOWING he was so brave and clumsy and troubled, he absolutely NAILED the final girl role and I love that so much for him!!
he also had some of my favorite thematic moments. I especially loved the yorishiro destruction panel:
LOVE love love love that he TEARS IT APART WITH HIS TEETH !!!! when we’ve learned this mitsuba has supernatural mitsuba’s memories!! the HAT oh my god the symbol of the hat flying off in the moment when he goes full feral to save this girl and himself… when that’s a part of himself supernatural mitsuba tries so hard to hide and suppress… this mitsuba dives into it for the sake of his own life and the life of his underclassman. mitsuba tears something apart with his teeth, leaning into his more monstrous instincts, to be a hero!! the hat is so silly but also I’m choosing to read it as a symbol of hiding the parts of himself he’s scared of, and in this moment we see the beauty and strength in that part of him!! (go, queer monster boy, go!! I love you!!!!)
I also find this mitsuba fascinating for how he flips the script on picture perfect mitsuba
picture perfect mitsuba wants to pretend he’s human mitsuba… he wants his memories, even if it’s fake. 116 mitsuba… wants to remember!! he wants to understand!! he wants the truth!!
it’s hard to really know what to make of this though, because it’s hard to know who this mitsuba is. according to the supposed altered timeline, this should be alive mitsuba. but he has supernatural mitsubas memories… it raises questions mitsuba and tsukasa always have: what is a person? a soul? memories? both? to what extent?
to bring it back to him destroying the paper with his teeth: I would love… if original/human mitsuba had some of the same aggressive/feral tendencies supernatural mitsuba is so ashamed of, that make him feel so nonhuman, so monstrous. he doesn’t have human mitsubas memories; there could be so many similarities between them he can’t see!!
one last mitsuba observation:
his injured hand in 116 is the one always in his sleeve as a ghost and then as a supernatural. probably just a thematic thing rather than a lore one, but a really interesting detail!! are we barreling inevitably back to our original timeline?
kou is also really interesting this chapter, and in this arc in general, for his unwillingness to remember… he’s had multiple opportunities and ignored them all. very baffling, considering picture perfect kou’s and red house kou’s dedication to reality and all the pain that comes with it. not sure what to make of this just yet, but it’s something I’m keeping an eye on!! would love to hear other people’s thoughts on this!!
my favorite kou panel this chapter:
I am FASCINATED by the bandages slipping off his hand… they look!! incredibly familiar!!
I wonder what the parallel is here? could this be a lore hint, implying amane’s wounds were caused by whatever gave kou his injuries? or maybe just a thematic parallel of a boy in too deep trying to protect someone? someone putting himself in harms way willingly… much to think about!!
now some nitty gritty lore thoughts:
happy to report I am still steadfastly team “tsukasa is tsukasa”—I think original supernatural tsukasa definitely is tsukasa, and the white bubble of him calling out to amane suggests to me he’s still in there in this timeline too, just less in control. maybe that’s as good as neutralized to the clock keepers though? or maybe the yorishiro destruction was more tsukasa’s idea than the god’s, and the god is appeased by this ritual enough to not need to destroy any yorishiros?
do mysteries and their yorishiros even exist in this timeline?
on the topic of yorishiros, it’s interesting that the girl from the photography club was saved when the paper was destroyed but kou still got possessed… is it just one spirit traveling between targets, and it left the girls body to possess kou? but the girl and tsukasa seemed to be possessed simultaneously… so maybe destroying the paper did do something to help the girl? if the yorishiro allows connection between the supernatural and human realms, why the flowers? are they a sacrifice? the existence of the ritual itself is also confusing, because the god didn’t need any ritual to contact tsukasa in the red house… does this have something to do with the power of rumors? or is the red house maybe just a more powerful location than the school? why was amane hyping up the ritual? is tsukasa calling for him because he’s used to teacher amane being there and now he’s not?
as usual I find myself with a million questions lol, I absolutely loved this chapter!! would love to hear other thoughts about it!!
and as a closing note: I would die so fast in this timeline there’s no way I’m not playing with him he’s so cute even when supremely possessed
if he’s so evil why does he have a halo??
little angel confirmed <3
#give that boy uppies right this second#ignore the hole in his face#he’s lonely!!!! play with him!!!!!!!#also once again so proud of mitsuba I love him so dearly#and I didn’t even touch on the meeting the in laws scene lol#tbhk spoilers#tbhk 116#tbhk meta

I saw your post about giving tbhk characters songs and I noticed a bunch of them were musical theater and they fit so fucking well??
Like waving through a window for Sousuke and dead mom for Kou?? Unlikely lovers?? Music of the night??? Your mind omg.
I was wondering if you had more musical theater to tbhk characters stuff because id definitely like to hear them lol. It's totally fine if you don't have more, in case not, you could give more non musical stuff.
I’ve been behind on my asks so I’m trying to get caught up and this seems like the best one to start with, musicals have been rotting my brain since the eighth grade. I’m gonna be honest, I don’t remember every song I listed in the original post so I apologize if some of these are repeats!!
TW: Brief mention of suicide ideation for one of the songs/characters
• Idk how much you’d count this one as a musical song but Once Upon A Dream from Sleeping Beauty makes me think of Mitsukou/Soukou (especially in the context of the new timeline)
• I have to apply Dentist! from Little Shop Of Horrors to every sadist character so it’s going to Teru, maybe he can do that if he ever smartens up and quits exorcism (I would give it to Kou but Teru is like. wayyyy more upfront abt his sadism lol)
• Tango: Maureen from Rent except every character in TBHK besides Mitsuba and Mei is lowkey bisexual so there are so many ways it could go. Hanako and Aoi about Nene. Teru and Aoi about Akane. Mitsuba and Nene about Kou. The possibilities are endless
• Popular from Wicked with Aoi and Nene…because yk we always see Aoi giving Nene popular girl advice. I am aware her character goes deeper than that I’m just being silly
• Love Me For What I Am from In Trousers with Nene but just for the “I met a man in a can” line. She did, in fact, meet her boyfriend in a bathroom
• Helpless from Hamilton with AoiAoi and then Satisfied with Terukane. I think I’ve seen an animatic for this but there are a lot of Hamilton animatics for different fandoms so I could be mistaken
• Alyssa Greene from The Prom with Aoi
• And on that note, The Lady’s Improving with Yako or Sumire (Sumire bcuz you can add in Hakubo for the romantic context). Quite honestly I love The Prom sm, it’s very overhated imo bcuz the songs are all bangers
• Portrait Of A Girl from Bare: A Pop Opera with Aoi and Akane before their development
• More with Bare because I love queer musicals, Role Of A Lifetime with Mitsuba in the context of Mitsukou. They can’t be together forever and Mitsuba knows that so he’s confused on what Kou wants…see the vision
• Seventeen from Heathers with HanaNene but bonus points if it’s Picture Perfect Amanene when they tried to run away together
• There’s A Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q with Nene…possibly after Nakahara rejected her
• I feel like the concept of She Used To Be Mine from Waitress could be applicable to so many female characters because context aside, it has major theme of going from girlhood to womanhood + overcoming a lot of trauma, so it’s hard for me to nail down just one. Perhaps yorishiro Sumire? Could also apply to Nene
• You Gotta Die Sometime from Falsettos with Mei (my sister and I quote the opening line to each other every time one of us is sick…but also oof this song hurts me)
• This one is a bit nonsensical but I like to imagine The Worst Pies In London with Teru and Akane since yk Teru is terrible at cooking. Or with Ghost Hotel Kou and Nene (not in a ship way tho)
• The Ballad Of Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone loosely makes me think of Katakuri bcuz of the whole deal with the kannagi losing their memories
• In the Same Boat from the Lightning Thief demo with any of the trios tbh, mainly the Broadcasting Crew because Sakuhiko fit the Percabeth dynamic so well and Tsukasa as Grover is just yes (in the context of this song specifically lol). For the others tho it would be Terukane as Percabeth and Aoi as Grover, then HanaKou as Percabeth and Nene as Grover…or HanaNene as Percabeth and Kou as Grover. Another one with lots of options
• Red And Black from Les Misérables with Teru and Akane bcuz of the whole Enjolras caring abt war and Marius being all head-in-the-clouds about Cosette…very Akane coded in general
• Meet the Plastics from Mean Girls with Teru as Regina, Akane as Gretchen, and Aoi as Karen
• On that same note, WORLD BURN WITH TERU. HEAR ME OUT.
• I want to bring up Spring Awakening just to bring up Spring Awakening tbh so Don’t Do Sadness/Blue Wind with Aoi and Akane (?) or Teru maybe. Tbh I’m struggling on who could do Ilse’s part but Aoi fits Moritz (my boyyyyy) very well with how she wants to “go somewhere far away” aka take her own life due to the pressure she’s under. Could also be with Mitsuba or Amane as Moritz but NOT Kou because we all know Kou isn’t actively suicidal right?? We’re all on the same page abt that?? Good
• I could also picture Those You’ve Known with Kou and his dead ghost friends at the end of the manga. Specifically Hanako as Moritz and Nene as Wendla but you could substitute either of them for Mitsuba if you want
• I feel like Wait For It from Hamilton could fit Tsuchigomori
• No Me Diga from In the Heights makes me think of Aoi and Nene and their rumors. Bonus points if Akane is the one Nene teases Aoi about with the “just wanted to see what you’d say” part
• Mister Cellophane from Chicago with Mitsuba
• Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom Of The Opera with Teru mourning his mom…we don’t really get to see him talk abt her in canon so it’s a cool concept
• More with Teru, I’m Not That Girl from Wicked. I’m thinking within the context of TeruAoi but feel free to apply it to Terukane
• When He Sees Me from Waitress with AoiAoi or Mitsukou…Aoi and Mitsuba singing ofc
• I’m Breaking Down with Aoi during the Confession Tree chapter when Akane started dating Lemon
Okay I’m capping myself off there, hope you liked this!! And thank you for the ask :)
