#HOWArtMuseum is pleased to announce that “Three Times” opened this afternoon under the joint efforts with College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University. The event consists of exhibition, symposium, lectures and workshops. The exhibition, which comprises four sections– Intimate Encounter, Like Attracts Like, Arty Game, and Viva La Different, will display 500 pieces of artworks created by nearly 300 artists from 34 countries and regions. The artworks in the “Intimate Encounter” section were selected through a public invitation that was open internationally for 18 months, the pieces in “Like Attracts Like” were selected and sent by international galleries, “Arty Game” consists of artworks from outstanding contemporary visual artists, while “Viva La Different” features a collection selected by curators from ten countries and regions. _ This biennale will inspire intriguing exploration and dialogue between time and space. Timewise, it showcases the past – tradition and singularity, the present – existence of diverse values and dimensions, and the future – a reality that not yet exists and has every possibility. Spacewise, it connects Shanghai, one of the world’s top metropolitans; China, a rising nation; and the whole world, an ever-changing arena. .

[Press Release]  INFINITY IN FINITY  A Solo Art Exhibition by Yong Joo Kim
Bini Gallery is pleased to present the first Australia solo exhibition of international renowned Korean jewellery maker Yong Joo Kim.
Yong Joo Kim is a Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC) and NICHE award-winning artist with an extensive record of exhibitions across Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia. Her work crosses the genre of both wearable sculpture and installations. She is considered a pioneer in the use of hook-and-loop fasteners as material for art. For the past 8 years in fact, her creative process has been to push the limitation of one material, hook and loop fasteners, to create hundreds of complex forms.
“As a studio artist, I have been challenged to witness — over and over again — that beauty arises from what may seem like ordinary or even mundane materials, when you give them your sincere empathy and persistent trust.
I came to realize that working with inexpensive materials was now the rule rather than the exception. Given my situation, I wanted to see how far I could go with this single material. At one point, I wanted to limit myself even further, and decided to use merely three distinct shapes of fasteners. It was during this time that I saw an unexpected link between survival, variety, and mastery.”
Yong Joo has been a featured speaker at premier conferences and exhibitions such as the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) and Sculpture Objects Functional Art and design (SOFA).
Her work appears in the permanent collection of Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) and Velcro Group. Yong's work was also selected for the Mari Funaki Award 2016. Also, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), London, has recently acquired three of artist’s bracelets as part of its permanent collection.
Yong Joo will be attending the exhibition opening night and she will hold a lecture at the Melbourne Polytechnic Visual Arts-Jewellery department, Fairfield Campus, on Thursday, the 15th of March at 1pm.
Yong Joo’s brooch will be also part of the Gallery O Seoul exhibition at NGV Design Store, Melbourne Design Week 2017.
See the Infinity in Finity exhibition, works by Yong Joo Kim from the 17th of March until 6th of April 2017.
Opening night Friday 17th of March from 5.30 to 7.30 pm

About Yong Joo Kim’s work  What does it mean for us to “survive?” For Yong Joo, making art is a way of exploring this simple yet complex question.
Yong Joo focuses primarily on a single material of choice: hook and loop fasteners. The choice to create jewelry out of an inexpensive material often considered unattractive and mundane was originally inspired by two reasons. On the one hand, it was to survive financially by keeping material costs down. On the other hand, it was to challenge her ability to survive in a field known for its use of attractive and precious materials.
What Yong Joo has since learned is that the creative process is also something that requires survival.
In the creative process, we often get stuck. When we do, we feel as if there is a finite limit to our ability to create. To survive the creative process is to continue to feel alive when we get stuck by not giving up. To do this, we must be able to embrace and appropriately respond to a variety of unpleasant surprises, so as to overcome them. What’s pleasantly surprising about this is that when we do, we often end up with art that defies our imagination. Art that provides us with experiences of sublime, inspiration, and beauty, which helps us realize that there still exists infinite possibilities. She wishes to share these experiences with those who witness or wear her work.
About Bini Gallery Opened in 2010, Bini Gallery’s main interest lies on contemporary jewellery made out of alternative materials. Bini Gallery regularly organizes solo and group exhibitions to introduce the work of international and local jewellery makers coming from different backgrounds.
We try to be open minded and we base our choices on what we love.

Contemplastic II Soo Yeon Kim /  Yong Joo Kim / Joo Hyung Park / Wan Hee Cho
We, the four participating artists, Soo Yeon Kim, Yong Joo Kim, Joo Hyung Park, and Wan Hee Cho, have successfully completed our first Contemplastic exhibition at Baum Gallery in 2015. We are now planning our second exhibition, to be held at Gallery Dam in Seoul, from January 17th to 26th 2017.
The title of this exhibition, “Contemplastic,” was newly created for the event by combining the words “Contemplation” and “Plastic.” When we create our art work as jewelry artists, we must be able to make firm decisions based on our philosophy. In addition, we must also be able to digest outside input with an open mind and be flexible enough to let them develop and grow our decisions. During this process, we not only face conflicts of the subjective kind - such as deciding what concepts we want to express, where on the body should the finished work be located, and what the finished form should look like -, but also of the inter-subjective kind - such as ensuring the work is comfortable enough to be worn and that our work communicates and dialogues with the current discourse of our society, culture, the field of art, craft, and contemporary jewelry. By curating this exhibition, we hope to share the experience we had while navigating the above conflicts and concerns. Our intention is to facilitate greater intimacy between ourselves and our audience. Since 2014, we have regularly engaged in conversations around a variety of subject matters. By publicly sharing the documentation of these conversations, we hope to facilitate an opportunity for the audience to empathize with an aspect which would normally be inaccessible by mere observation of the final art form. We also hope that our personal, social, and cultural points of view will contribute, however minutely, to lessening the gap between the artwork and the viewer as well as between the artist and the viewer. Opening reception Jan. 17th (Tue). 2017 5pm
Location Gallery Dam Yunposun-gil 72, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea 03060 Tel: +82-2-738-2745
Gallery hours noon - 6pm
