Hi there! I saw your post about the translation for Wings on Ice, and I would love to post about it on a YOI updates account I run on Twitter. Would that be okay with you? I would link back to your original post as well :)

It's okay to post the translation and romaji, but not kanji.

The transcription I did contains mistakes, but I won't post the correct kanji version, because nobody of Tosshii's fans have done it so far, so it's probably not something that they would want to be posted (I mean it's probably a kind of "buy the more expensive physical copy, if you want to know").

The correct translation is like this:

This was the first song I heard by Yura Hatsuki, and it instantly made me a fan, so it seemed fitting that I should translate it first!

This is a song about the vengeful women in fairy tales when they get their way. Is the heroine in one story the villain in the next?

I’m not totally sure I got this one right, and it could sort of change the meaning of the song…

I take this as “The prince (who is destined to fall in love with the queen) won’t come” but who is the queen? Is this like Snow White where the queen is vengeful towards the girl and later turning into a witch? Or is this that girl, forever destined to be alone, even as a queen?

Today’s Translation Tuesday is another self-indulgent one! I started studying Japanese 13 years ago (?!) because I wanted to be able to translate my favorite songs myself, and by golly, I’m finally at a point where I can SO I WILL. I was obsessed with this song during a study abroad in Kyoto, so it brings up a lot of memories. Shout outs to the three other Kra fans still out there!! 🤙

Tsubame means “swallow”, a bird that in Japan symbolizes happiness; it’s said that if a swallow builds its nest in your home or business, it’ll bring good luck. They’re migratory birds that mate for life and return to the same nesting grounds every year, so they also symbolize fidelity, loyalty, and the comfort of returning home. All things that are being taken away in this song, hehe.

Song lyrics are especially tricky to translate for a couple reasons. First, like poems, they’re very dense; every word is there for a reason, so I tried to choose English words with just as much care, rather than a straightforward literal translation. There’s some nice alliteration and imagery in the original too, which I tried to preserve as best I could.

The lyrics might seem stiff or flowery for a pop-rock song (“sullied”? really?), but that’s visual kei for you baybee 😎 These lyrics are super plain Jane compared to some bands, who seem to make a competition of how much kanji wordplay and allusion they can cram into a single song.
