The house of cards: the beginning.
Is it new for The Devil Judge to put the whole plotline into small details? No, it’s not. And while we’re always paying attention to such things as emotions or misleads in dialogues, today I want to talk about... cards. And to be exact, about their meaning and how they’re used in the show.
There will be three posts, and the main one is the third one. But before we get to it, we need to understand the meaning and the impact that cards have on the plot. Take a cup of tea because it’s going to be a veeeery long story.

— The first building.
Tumblr media
The first time we see a house of cards is in ep.10, Yo-Han putting two last cards on the top of the house of cards right after Doh Young-Chung was caught. After a few more shots, we're introduced to more angles of the building, every of which has a special meaning.
Tumblr media
1: The whole thing consists of four floors: Spades — Clubs and one Diamond — two Diamonds and one Heart — one Diamond and one Heart — the top.
The first floor, according to this site, "... it symbolizes a shovel used to dig a grave, and when it is matched with the minor arcana cards of the tarot card , it corresponds to 'swords' because it looks like a sword . ... a pattern with a strong feeling of symbolizing death and destruction , such as symbolizing the shape of the devil 's spear ."
Diamonds "... is also known to symbolize merchants or capitalists" which is obviously about money and wealth; Clubs "...symbolizes farmers and means wisdom" while also having a theory that "if it corresponds to the Minor Arcana cards of the Tarot Corresponds to 'wands'" and "that it originated from the whip of a slave". Hearts mean... hearts? "It is a pattern that is always used in events related to love" but it also "corresponds to 'cups' when it corresponds to the Minor Arcana cards of the Tarot " because of the theory that "the origin is a cup (or Holy Grail), it originated from Jipae, a Chinese game".
So in conclusion: fighting —> being wise (with a little bit of money) money —> having money (and a bit of love) —> money and love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2: The left part of the top. Now we’re entering my favorite topic here. I hope you all know the card named Joker? It’s a card that can be every suit and every number, and sometimes there may be two Jokers of the same color, but in the deck which Yo-Han uses there is "Black Joker" and "Red Joker". Here, it's the strongest card since it can create a pair with any card.
Tumblr media
And because we have the deck right here, we can see that the only two cards that have no mirror images on two sides of them are both Jokers, we can assume that the card we see on the top is "Red Joker".
Tumblr media
3: The second card on the top is the Ace of Spades, and now we will move on to one of the most intriguing part of this post.

— The two cards that play the main roles.
Do you remember the symbolism of the suit of Spades? “Devil’s spear” is not mentioned here just because, but because of the scene right after Yo-Han destroys the building. He takes into his hand one (truly random?) card, and turns out it’s Ace of Spades — the most powerful (in decks without Joker) card of the trump card (you can read the story behind it, it’s pretty interesting).
Tumblr media
The most valuable scene here is not Yo-Han looking at it and having it in his hands, but rather the next shot we see of Ga-On’s face. Ga-On’s the Ace of Spades in Yo-Han’s hands, and he's the devil’s spear Yo-Han uses it the best way he can...
Tumblr media
by throwing it right into the faces of his enemies. Now, I suggest talking about something more subtle and something hidden pretty well, but still present.

— Ga-On’s card.
We just got to know that Ga-On’s the Ace of Spades, so what now? Oh... it’s nothing but a game of numbers. If we look into Ga-On’s birthdate and what card he is based on it (you can check it here), we’ll discover him being a 6 of Hearts.
Tumblr media
If you want to read more, it’d be amazing! There’s a lot to write, but let's try to summarize.
Tumblr media
Six of Hearts represents the Law of The Love, they are emotionally intense yet affectionate, and having home for them is essential.
Well, describes him pretty well, but unfortunately, it’s not something I wanted to note. In my mother language, there’s a saying: "бути шестіркою,” and in translation, it means “being someone’s pawn/running dog.” But if we translate it word by word, we’ll get “being someone’s sixth.” A puppet, whose only work is to do whatever is told and not ask any questions.
And... that’s the purpose of Ga-On at the beginning of the whole show: being a marionette that will find information about Yo-Han and nothing, nothing more. But as it usually ends, Ga-On’s much more than just someone’s plan in destroying Yo-Han.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He may not know yet—what kind of suit and card in total he is, and we see it on his sweatshirt in the same episode: on his back, he has a card back. He’s a hidden card, and everybody can read him however they want, but what matters here is that he’s in hands of someone for whom he’s the Ace of Spades,
Tumblr media
and for someone who respects him and his abilities. He's in the hands of someone who doesn't think of him as just a “pawn.”
Part two.

The boy had become a young adult by the time he was released from prison in 11 years. He wished to pursue a quiet life… But another murder flips the village. A white bone carcass has been discovered. Suicide CW:
The protagonist repeatedly tells people to kill him, has little self-preservation, and slits his wrist at one point in the first episode; it is later self-described as a suicide attempt. Another character, not the protagonist, commits suicide; it is shown in episodes 8 and 9. Episode 13 also contains a staged suicide, and in episode 14 a character attempts suicide but is rescued.
Sexual Assault CW:
One of the murder victims is raped and while we see the lead-up and the aftermath, the actual act is not shown. The sexual assault is, however, discussed repeatedly throughout the drama, particularly after the body is found and autopsy performed in episode 6. The actual scene isn't shown until episode 8, after which it is shown multiple more times in flashbacks.

Scenes missing from the Devil Judge (as told by a RL lawyer aka yours truly)
(with the disclaimer that I don't practice in South Korea, nor dystopian South Korea)
That one case deadline where you really need Kang Yohan's input and he's nowhere to be found.
That one case question where you have emailed Kang Yohan 4 times and texted him once, and no response, because again, no idea where he is.
Telling someone via Zoom in a hearing that they need to mute themselves.
Telling someone via Zoom in a hearing that they are muted.
Internet reception getting spotty in the middle of a Zoom hearing as the judge is making the ruling.
That 30 email exchange in which hairs are getting pulled out because the parties cannot agree to a goddam hearing date.

Note
Hi, I've been searching through your Devil Judge script book tags and loved seeing all the extra detailed character notes. Could you post the final airport scene where Ga On runs after Kang Yohan and they stare into each other's eyes. I would love to know what the script direction was for that?
so actually, the scriptbook is a bit different than what they put in the show. it’s very straightforward and why i prefer the show variation bc there is so much more nuance.
however, there is a really great note by the writer that it was jinyoung’s thought to add in “what should i do in a world without yohan.” although the script included soohyun in the line, while the show didn’t.
google translate has gotten so good at translating. this is SO much better than when the show first came out. this is def gonna make me want to go back again and translate more. ignore the black though. when converting to text, it added random words, lol.

. . . what's with the name?
‘borealis’ is a word with a flurry of meanings. a borealis could apply to the northern lights aptly named the aurora borealis, taken from latin roots, you could say the word only means ‘north’, completely derived from the names given to the ancient gods of the wind.
Tumblr media
. . .     % meeting the world on a spontaneous whim in the midst of a global pandemic, borealis was released on may first of twenty twenty. the project was completely unexpected, because after four years of silence from a company who had just had their most popular group sue their former ceo into a hefty jail sentence, did louvix audio just come out with a new group? yep, and nobody expected such a thing. composing of five tracks, it seems to be much more of an experimental album, a concept that hasn't been seen in the group for a while.. maybe we should start a petition.
. . . ▸ the opening track of the album reveal is your classic album introduction which could serve as a title track on a good day i suppose. with our beloved center hwan credited with the arrangement of the lyrics (and bless him because we got a yohan chorus). reveal can best be described as a yearning piece masked by the production put into it, the lyrics delve into the idea of going crazy over love, a love that makes you go insane, no other thoughts beside the enraptured soul nestled in your palms. or, you could just describe it as a sex tune, it sort of fits that bill pretty well.
. . . ▸ coming in as the beloved title track, snake eyed scar is the perfect encapsulation of the sin lust. the lyrics tell a story of it's own, a cursed bond which is tied by the scar connecting two souls together, again, it could simply be labeled a mindless sex tune, but in the bigger picture of things, it could also be a song detailing the connections between a toxic relationship and that of addiction. it's terrible for you, cracks your features and breaks you down one by one, yet you continue going back for me regardless of the hurt which follows.
. . . ▸ following behind the steps of the title track, salty narrates the bitter taste of love on one's tongue, it tells a literal story of a couple who can't get over each other no matter how much they try. the prospect of having to move on with the feeling of longing remaining etched in your mind is as distasteful of the bitter lingering of salt on your tongue, a taunting tune that seems to have been created to try to convince people to text their ex, and if they did.. well, we can all guess where that went. with lyrics penned by our beloved leader yohan, we can assume he probably missed his own.
. . . ▸ expressing the clear intention of ‘slutty music’, 119 contains everything such a song needs, breathy backing vocals, hip thrusts, undeniably questionable lyrics, the whole shebang. performed by members yohan, junmin, hajoon, kyrie, and haneul, you could really just call this one a sex tune, hajoon would be inclined to agree! just don't ask them to explain what it means, they'll freeze and attempt to stutter out a response whilst haneul " slyly " reenacts sex positions with his fingers.
. . . ▸ now coming to a startlingly quick end, the album closes with moondance, a tune which repeats through excessive adlibs (hwan put in that work!) that love could be equivalent to the beauty of the moon, even with the production and the very not needed dance, it's sort of beautiful? the love of their partner could be comparable to that of the moon's atmosphere, a source of light which is all that's needed. " if our love was equivalent to the stars , you would be the earth , and in every universe , i would be your orbiting moon ", shit makes me want to die.
Tumblr media
. . .     % era notes
though it's often hailed as one of their best title tracks, snake eyed scar garnered only three wins over a two week promotion period, it's their title track with the least wins
it is also the album with the least amount of member participation, the only members involved in writing and production are our two main vocals, yohan and hwan, who are credited on reveal and salty respectively
the album didn't do much well in pre-orders, but in day of it's release, it sold 240,000 units, debuting at number 7 on the gaon album chart, it then shot up to number 2 after a week, the album holds the ninth spot as one of the best selling albums of 2020 with a total of 806,637 units sold
the lead single would do moderately well, landing at number 6 and 12 on digital charts respectively, it was actually the third song of the album, salty which would completely overtake the digital singles charts, debuting at number one at the gaon digital chart and remaining at the number one spot for six consecutive weeks, it became the best performing single that may
okay, now onto memorable era moments
yohan pulling himself from every single version of the album, cue the narcissist allegations when he decided to keep all of his photocards
meliora's first ot13 vlive!! (05.02.20) which drew out member fact sharing, including the members stark descriptions of each other (cut to the members calling haneul a ‘slightly dimwitted sweetheart’).
the group getting their second vlive deleted because they broke half the rules, most of the vlives from this era, excluding their first one, have been taken down because of their insistence to not follow the rules
yohan not even being able to announce the fandom name because the members were arguing over designs for their lightstick
the members all descending into a loud flurry of madness because junmin swore once in their fanchat guide video
the groups first encore stage being less of an encore stage because they were contemplating on if they should switch parts or not (they spent half the time not singing and byeol was choking on his tears the entire time)

— The houses of cards: the middle.
In the first part, we talked about the first house of cards shown in the series. Now, I would like to have this post of the ending for the house cards since the third and the last part is going to be about different cards.

— The second house of cards.
Tumblr media
Let's start with the first one we see after the beginning of episode eleven. Just like in episode ten, Yo-Han builds it patiently; this time, though, we're unaware after which events this scene takes place.
Tumblr media
But what we do know is that 1) the structure is different from the one shown in ep. 10 (back then it was a pyramid); 2) the top is temporarily absent but as Ga-On walks in and talks, Yo-Han carefully puts it on the peak of the building.
The most interesting part begins when we start to look into the meanings. It would be nice to read through each card (since it has many "spoilers" for what's going to happen next in the show) but just like previously, some cards are blurred while some are basically unseen. We see only a small part of what can be deciphered, but it's already enough to do some conclusions.
Tumblr media
Returning to the main point — the top — we can see that the card Yo-Han puts when Ga-On talks about Doh Young-Chung on the right is different in the first and the following shortly scenes. It may be the house that fell and they had to rebuild it, but in both scenes where the top is shown properly, the structure doesn't change. At all. The same cards are on each floor in the same order.
Tumblr media
Either way, the meaning behind the card we see first is intriguing, even though it's kind of a small card with the number Four of Hearts (description taken from here). But I do not want to focus on the card too much because 1) it's not accented on; 2) Yo-Han closes it with his hand (meaning the card changes); 3) we have a card more interesting to discuss.
Tumblr media
Once again, according to this site and the photos of the deck, the one standing on the top the second time is Jack of Spades.
Tumblr media
Once again taking the description from here, we see words that fit the end of episode eleven along with the next ones pretty well; even more, we see that Jack of Spades characterizes both Ga-On's personality and motive pretty well... or it doesn't?
Tumblr media
Since it's a show where even directions of eyes are important, Ga-On not looking at the Four of Hearts not even once gives us a hint about him being the second card on the top: the hidden card, which neither number nor suit is known. Again, his role is yet to be discovered and may be interpeted wherever.

— The third and the last house of cards.
Repeating already something that was told one thousand times (and still will be repeated), but The Devil Judge is not a drama where something is happening just because. Everything has its reason, whether we, the viewers, know it or not.
That is why the last house of cards is shown in ep. 16 is... kind of odd. The structure is similar to the one in ep. 11, but... that's where all the similarities end.
Tumblr media
All the times Yo-Han had played with the cards the only way he knew knows, we always could see at least half of the whole building with the cards. Here, all the floors are shown blurry and we can catch only a few ones. With previous houses, we could get a lot of information about the plot and the characters' inner thoughts and motives. That was before, and not now.
Tumblr media
Before, we saw the top that consisted of two cards. Now, instead of reading into the roles of Yo-Han and Ga-On in the game they played, all we see is emptiness at the top... which also may be the answer: the game is over, and it's not going to continue ever again.
And apparently, as much as it saddens, it gives new opportunities for writers. Because "Every ending is a new beginning", there are many ways to begin the new page... which we will uncover in the next part.
