I know that was a shitpost for the latest Danny Phantom fandom meme, but I'm genuinely impressed and how authentic it sounds. How much of Dash's monologue is real advice, and how do you know all of that? Do you work out?
Yes I'm so sorry to inform my good people of Tumblr that I've secretly been a part of the gym fandom for all this time. I've only recently come out as a gymbro in this phandom via my creation of the current dp gym bro au meme that I've forced upon everyone in this good holy christian space. I mix whey protein into my overnight oats, I track my macros, and I have a closet full of Gym Girlie Outfits™️.
And just know it's a badge of honor that I carry to be able to say I've converted multiple members of the Danny Phantom phandom into regular gym goers as well 💪
#all jokes aside i grew up in a very athletic family#where talking about things like gym routines and protein tracking was very normal#i worked as a tennis coach for a few years before i was injured (by my own hubris) and was forced to quit#i've been rebuilding my body basically from like the ground floor since the injury#and while at first it was frustrating cuz i had to learn how to do things i'd always been able to do before#(and yes i did cry on my yoga mat more than one time in the beginning)#now i'm learning to have fun with it!#im still very weak compared to where i once was#and it doesn't help that i was set back by other injuries that came from not taking care of myself like a bad knee#but slowlyyyy i'm getting there#i once thought i'd never be able to do an unassisted pull up again#and now i can see it within my reach!#very exciting#i love love loveeeee being strong#Also yes it's real advice to train the 'minor' muscles#for example a lot of lower back pain comes from a weak glute medius#ppl be focusing on the glute max cuz it's the big one and forget about the other glutes#compound exercises are a great way to hit multiple muscles at once

Doctor said no yoga
#told her I spent 4 months doing yoga every day right after the injury and she grimaced#got some muscle relaxers though. yay!#this is facetious because I don’t do yoga but I did and I enjoyed it mostly for the fact that I was naturally good at it#lol

Being on my mat is such an exercise in compassion these days. I'm back to the most rudimentary basics: keeping my spine straight, releasing neck tension, re-learning deep yogic breath control.
When I get frustrated I remember what Swami Satyapremananda said during a class during my yoga teacher training: "try to enjoy your body as it is at this moment. It's frustrating for your head to not touch your knees [in seated forward bend], but once you're able to do that you likely won't ever experience the pose like this ever again."
Onward 💫

#reminded me of all the casual tight spots that are very possibly repetitive motion injuries or similar#i always forget how weird my left shoulder is until i have to do a yoga pose#and then im like 'oh. huh. that is probably not great.'

Yoga seems promising
i am not supposed to do anything high impact cause of my back. No trampoline either cause it compresses the discs, or so I’ve been told. However I did a short yoga video with my sister, and it was a bit sore, but my L5 disc felt a lot less swollen when I was done. I am gonna do it more often. I am NOT flexible, but the relief was still noticeable

In many of my experiences walking into into a group home to share Yoga I am often met with much reluctance. I think this is partly because so many view yoga as it is something you do on the floor with a somewhat healthy body in strange shapes. For someone in a wheelchair this idea seems obviously impossible and out of their ability or comfort zone, and rightly so. Several years ago I was…

just learned about a book written by a USian yoga instructor for other instructors re. hEDS (Ehlers Danlos Type III)
Yoga for Bendy People by Libby Hinsley, ISBN 9798885041188 [2022]
this is not an endorsement nor a review. this is more by way of being informed when you get your 237891273rd person telling you to “try yoga” after you’ve been strictly, explicitly been forbidden from getting anywhere near yoga classes (as one would typically encounter them in the States.)
a summary here at this random physical therapy site
#ehlers danlos syndrome#hypermobility#heds#yoga practice in the united states#living with disability#libby hinsley#who says she is a physical therapist who#specializes in ppl with hypermobility and chronic injuries#once had a yoga teacher#substitute for the pilates teacher#with no warning#and her#gentle yoga#fucked up my neck for months#and thus my head and spine#until a PT managed to fix it#shouldn't have done it#but hadn't yet heard the warnings#have not laid eyes on this text

Workouts this week
I’m still supposed to not be walking, and I’ve been trying diligently to keep it to a minimum, so the 3X a week Plyojam classes are done sitting or just standing still. I was very happy with how I did on Friday, lots of squats, so zero impact, but raised heart rate quite nicely. This weekend I want to get my bike out, air up the tires and give it a try, even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes, and try to get into a habit of it, even if just short rides for now.
The list of workouts for the week is 1/2 hr of Plyojam and 1/2 hour of Yoga+ class (Yoga+ is Yoga + upper body weights + balance work)
