Does anybody here know how the Chinese intersex community views perisex usage of the term yinyang ren (陰陽人) as a cultural gender?
All the intersex sources I've found on the term describe yinyang ren as either just a term for intersex, or as a reclaimed slur for intersex.
The old website of OII-Chinese, as quoted by @whimsy-flags, described it as:
“[Yinyang ren] are people whose physical gender cannot be clearly classified as male or female… Yin and Yang people do not mean people who deliberately choose to change their physiological characteristics.” (emphasis mine)
Yet I've also found a handful of sources from the perisex non-binary community that seem to view the term as a "third gender" for androgynous/bigender people, that oh just so happens to also sometimes include intersex people. I've noticed the sources that seem to be doing this are either members of the Chinese diaspora or just... not Chinese? 🤔
(edit to add: Chinese Wikipedia's entry for 陰陽人 is just a redirect to the entry on intersex/sex, and Wiktionary also indicates it's a word for intersex).
As an outsider it looks to me like the issue of perisex enbies being insensitive and thinking it's okay if they call themselves the h-word, combined with the issue of Global North wishful thinking about cultural genders. 😕
But I'm not Chinese, it's not my culture. I could be missing important context! I'd like to know if I'm reading this situation correctly or if I'm missing something. Thanks! 💜

gender is so weird for me. like, really weird. as someone who...
1. is autistic and intellectually disabled.
2. is intersex.
3. and also schizospec.
4. has trauma surrounding the fucking concept of gender as a whole.
5. is nonhuman, has DID, etc etc etc....i could go on.
like. it's really fucking weird dude. i can't make sense of any of this shit. it used to bring me alot of distress, how i wasn't able to explain my gender in neat, simple labels. i feared people wouldn't take me seriously if i didn't condense my identity enough into tiny, bite sized, palletable chunks. but, you know what? who gives a shit. it's my gender, i don't care what other people think of it. i don't know what i am, and that's ok. i may never know what i am in full, and that's alright, i've accepted that.
i'm a girlish boy and a boyish girl. i'm a transfem man but a transneu lady. i'm very androgynous but simultaneously femmasc. my gender is cat. my gender is goopy and slimy. my gender can't be understood from a human lense. i'm beautiful and handsome. i'm yinyang ren, my gender is cultural and i'm proud of that. i'm like a girl who is a boy who is a girl who is nothing. my gender is absent, but not fully gone. my gender is a healing wound. my gender is a flourishing garden. my gender is lesbian. my gender is also fag. my gender is proud, it's bright, it's in your face and shouting. it's so niche, but it's perfect for me, and that's what matters.
call yourself whatever the hell you want. mix and match labels, go crazy. all that matters is that you're respectful, and more importantly, that you're happy with your gender. it doesn't have to make sense to everybody, it just has to make sense to you <3

陰陽人   (Traditional) / 阴阳人    (Simplified) / Yīnyáng Rén   (Pinyin)
Yinyang Ren is typically described as a slur directed towards intersex people in the Chinese community. However, the Organization Intersex International Chinese (OII-Chinese) has reclaimed this, as well as many others of our [intersex] community. the OII-Chinese site states:
“Yin and Yang are people whose physical gender cannot be clearly classified as male or female… Yin and Yang people do not mean people who deliberately choose to change their physiological characteristics.” [Source]

Yinyang ren
Yinyang ren as well as the other terms in the “culture exclusive gender” tag are genders that are specific to certain cultures and should not be used by people not of that culture. If you’re not sure you’re able to use this, feel free to send an ask on my ask blog [Link], I have followers that could help you out!
(Copied from this post [Link])
Yinyang ren is a cultural gender identity from China. The concept is that a person has a balanced amount of yin energy (femininity) and yang energy (masculinity), which makes them a very balanced person. This is reflected in the flag, where the circle is meant to be a sort of “balanced” or perfect symmetry version of the traditional yinyang symbol from Taoism. The red background comes from a novel known as The Dream of the Red Chamber, which is a very culturally important novel in China whose protagonist is a yinyang ren.
This identity is closest in concept to bigender in the Western countries, although yinyang ren can also be used by people who are intersex, trans, bisexual/biromantic, or just androgynous in general. In our chatroom, the yinyang ren we have are (using closest English equivalents) two bigender (including myself), three intersex, one trans man (undergoing transitions now), and one who is androgynous (but not comfortable with the nonbinary label). Again, this is just comparing with English equivalent, we all consider each other yinyang ren anyways.
There is not much information on yinyang ren in English, though honestly I feel that this link covers more or less the same information as you would find in Chinese.

REYLO VS HEI AND YIN FROM DARKER THAN BLACK PARALLELS
Post written by ME. The animated gifs and the photographs of the films shown are NOT MY and DO NOT BELONG TO ME IN ANY WAY.
"Darker Than Black" is an anime written and directed by Tensai Okamura and produced by Bones studio, formed by two series and an OAV (Darker than Black: Origins) Right order in which to watch anime is: Darker Than Black 1 season + OAV + Darker Than Black 2 season. There is also a adaptation of Anime in Manga. Ten years before story told, a strange territory, called Hell's Gate, appeared in Tokyo, ruining landscape and altering sky, which disappeared, replaced by false stars. At same time, people with paranormal powers appeared, cold-blooded murderers, almost completely devoid of feelings, killing using their powers. These people are called Contractors and their existence is kept secret to people. Contractors are used as murderers and spies from various organizations. Whenever a false star falls, it means a Contractor is dead. Contractors are flanked by a Doll, human MEDIUM, APATICS, devoid of emotions and their own will, able to detach themselves from their aurea, using it as OBSERVER SPIRIT. Nobody considers Dolls as human and their name is due precisely to fact these people can be treated as real DOLLS, to do everything, without them rebelling or feeling something. Protagonist of "Darker Than Black" is Hei, codename BK - 201, Syndacate’s killer. Hei nicknamed is Dark Reaper,  he controls electricity, but he’s also good at fighting bare hands. Yin is Hei Doll, but he doesn’t treat she as such... at some point, Yang, negative pole begins to claim Yin, whose duty is to unite with Yang... Hei also has a personal mission: find his sister Pai, who disappeared years ago ... 1) Few people know Hei’s true face and identity, ‘cause when he’s in mission he wears a MASK, a long BLACK COAT, GLOVES and WHIP:

The theme of this picture is yin and yang. Probably I will do other compositions with this subject because I like it so much.
Rey is really different from my previous ukiyo-e drawings because this time her style is in reference to TLJ, and I’m really satisfied for how I do her kimono and hair. Also I change her face because in the first ukiyo-e it was too much similar to Ichiro Tsuruta’s style.
Kylo Ren is always the same, I only changed a bit the clothes but I’m so proud of my self for how I do his katana.
Hope you like it! If you want to see my other Reylo ukiyo-e click on the links below:
