YANGUST DAY 2: SHOW AND TELL

So you know in the productions of rtc where in ‘Talia’, shes played by Jane? I like to think that the reason Jane is the one chosen is cos shes effectively a blank slate, and especially since her actual face has been replaced by a dolls head we don’t actually have any true idea as to what she looks like. So as a result of that, her playing Talia would make sense considering (other than the projected screen) we don’t actually know what Talia looks like, especially on top of the fact we don’t fully know whether shes real or not. By having Jane play her it links two characters with obvious mystery surrounding them, after all why not have the mysterious Talia be acted by the unknown Jane Doe, who effectively could be anyone

Just thought of a fic idea, may have been done before but:

the party thinking Billy's been possessed by the mindflayer, maybe Jane saw him sneaking around being all suspicious, and Max has noticed that he's been sneaking out and staying out overnight a lot more than normal. Maybe they go to the pool to check it out and Billy is wearing a shirt and they're still all like 'thats suspicious he never wears shirts, especially not at a swimming pool'.

So they decide to take these findings to the others, and maybe they go to Steve's first, I'm thinking this was a late night meeting kinda desicion. So first thing in the morning they barge into his house, despite his protests, and start explaining their theory. And Steve's instantly like 'he's not possessed' and the party are all just like 'how do u know, he's acting weird, and we know it's possessing someone so why not someone like Billy'.

And they'd keep arguing for a while with Steve getting increasingly annoyed, until Max mentions Billy sneaking out last night and Steve snaps and is like 'he's not possessed he was here last night!'. And the party r like huh?

Yeeeah turns out Billy and Steve have been dating/hooking up, which is why Billy is sneaking around and staying out so much. Wearing a shirt at the pool? Yh Steve got a little carried away and may have left some marks billy didn't want everyone seeing.

And the party find whoever's possessed eventually and Billy and Steve r safe and live happily ever after the end.

Season 2 Ramble#7 - All About Art

As the title suggests and as you probably guessed, this month's episode is all about art. I'm talking dancing, singing, modeling, drawing, whatever. You name it and surprisingly enough there's probably a manga for it. You can listen in with the link above or check the link in my bio for your preferred platform 🥂

Given the ever growing forms of art, its heavily subjective nature + my very limited perception and so on, I invite my friend Jen onto the show so I don't pigeonhole you all into my views and preferences via my reads.

So how this episode goes down is that the first segment is the usual listicle type beat, alternating between me and Jen, with the usual split of stuff read this month and stuff read before but since it's the two of us I thought I'd save y'all the long talking and have us only give details on the top 1s and kinda just summarize the other stuff we mention. Then for the second segment we'll have a little back and forth interview type beat in place of the usual rambles and then some outtakes from our test calls leading up to the episode to wrap up the whole thing.

Top 1(me)

Shiori Experience(story & art by Yuuko Osada, ongoing with 66 chapters)

The main premise is that plain Jane highschool teacher Shiori, gets her life flip twisted upside down, when one day she's possessed by the ghost of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Pretty sweet deal tbh, especially if you're a music fan, which she is, but ofc there's a catch. If she doesn't become a legend before 27 she dies.

Great cast, pretty solid story and the two intersect really well as the main plot is driven by her trying to scrounge up and then develop a band. So it's been pretty balanced so far in that as different members join we get to see them develop individually as well together as a band. Pretty solid story as I said, it draws a pretty good range of emotions out of you but what pushed it to number 1 was definitely the phenomenal art, specifically their illustration of sound. Going from a gentle wave, to an explosive eruption it's really cool to see the different sounds of different bands or even the different songs of the same band. Cannot recommend this manga enough, it truly is an amazing experience.

Two Honourable Mentions:

Blue Giant

Basically this kid wants to be the greatest jazz player in the world, he plays a mean sax and you can maybe kinda think of it as equal but opposite to the movie whiplash. As in yh they both have dudes trying to do the virtually impossible, both facing their fair share of hardships and so on but blue giant just has this super contagious uplifting vibe, especially the main character dai. he's a real one fr.

Smile Down The Runway

This is about fashion and the story revolves around 2 folks, chiyuki a model that's too short and ikuto, a designer that's too broke. Both have dreams of one day making it to the Paris fashion week runway (which starts next month irl btw). Read this pretty late in the month but it was so good I pretty much just blazed through it. Won't say much but the art was amazing and the designs were actually flames.

a manga that was surprisingly good:

Wandance

As the name suggests it's about dancing, largely of the hip hop based variety, they make a lot of cool references to modern artists from dj cream to Freddy Gibbs to Kendrick and basically it's about a dude who finds it hard to speak finding joy in being able to express himself through dance. On that note I gotta mention this month apparently makes 50 years of hip hop, shout out the genre and its offshoots fr but let the record show it all started right here in Jamaica. (It was surprising because for me the art style reminded me of a ton of manga I just didn't like)

Highschool delinquent yatora makes the last minute and arguably terrible career choice to become an artist. can't fight him though as clinging to a long life unable to be authentic to yourself reeks of misery. In any case the story so far follows him from high school to college, and we take a pretty indepth look at art, what it is and what it means to be good at it. Pretty bold move of the author to be honest.

Also want to mention the author has a self titled 4 chapter collection of short stories that you can check out as well, literally just found out and read earlier today, pretty neat read

Two Honourable Mentions:

Bakuman

Spoke on this last episode so I won't say much but it's a manga about making manga and it was the top one of its section last month

Akane Banashi

Something that was an honourable mention last month, really really good and would have been top 1 in its section of not for bakuman. It's about a traditional Japanese art called rakugo which is basically a one man play, because it's in the honourable mention slot I don't speak much on it but honestly really really really good

Reverse AU pt 2: Teachers

(TW: Suicide, Gun mention, Gareth is a villain)

Professor Jane: Jane is a newly divorced and depressed teacher who mourns the loss of her late husband Gareth. Jane couldn’t stand to be around without him so she took her life and the day before, she had a gun in her drawer. Now she haunts Akadamia as a vengeful ghost.

Gareth Nightman: Gareth on the outside is a perfect man, on the inside Gareth is a selfish, gold digger who doesn’t love Jane the was she loves him.

Mr. Artifex: The gentle giant and replacement for Professor Jane. He wears colorful sweaters to cover his muscles and is often one of the most responsible yet fun loving adults in Akadamia. He however knows when to be serious and is a leader of SWAT. 

Okami (Amy) Artifex: The highly fit feminist gym teacher who at first seems rude to all of her students but actually cares deeply for all of them. She is short tempered unlike her kind husband is overprotective of her family, and fought in a war for the rights of frog and fish people. She is one of the most overprotective teachers and tried to save Ellen when they were dressed as Salex.

Taurtis deserves to win and I'll TELL YOU WHY.

Taurtis indirectly causes a lot of things in YHS. And I'm not blaming him, but when it comes down to it, he was in fact the root cause of the two most important events in the entire story:

First of all, the FIRST DEATH. Jane.

We know that Yuki at first liked Taurtis, and because we know this, we also know that she killed Jane because of his lighthearted joke of being attracted to her. He didn't mean to get her killed, but Yuki being Yuki, she took it too seriously and killed Gareth's ex-wife. This, of course, lead to Gareth dying as well, albiet through suicide.

This scene is problematic for all the right reasons, but it's also incredibly impactful and is what shifts the tone in the series into what it really was. A tragedy.

Next, there's the first case of a student dying. Salex.

This one's obvious. Salex and Taurtis dated, and this causes Salex to get into a car accident. Why? Because Yuki was jealous and wanted to be with Taurtis. Beyond just the fact that this got Taurtis's character arc going, Salex's death was also the thing that really cemented how in-danger the students were.

Her death had set in stone the idea that these teenagers could die too. The murder mystery wasn't just an inconvenience now, it was a threat.

Grian's a great character, but I don't think it'd be right to have him be the YHS character of all time. Not when he wasn't even there the entire series, and maybe it's just me, but I think him being the YHS student winner would be disrespectful to his character as well.

He was never meant to be there. He was an outsider- a foreigner.

And thus, this title has to belong to Taurtis. If Grian had to go out any other way, I'm glad it was second place.

(After all - he is taurtis 2, isn't he? /j)

Gareth feels a lot of regret and shame surrounding his regression. Sure, he knows it helps distract him from the crushing reality, and yet he still can't shake the thought of regression being stupid.

And there are plenty of reasons why he feels this way.

Once Jane found him regressed one night, she did nothing but shame and ridicule him. And after hearing her many rants, maybe he started to believe her words too. He did love her more than anything, after all, even if it meant ignoring the red flags that were so obvious to those around him.

Sometimes he can't help but think about his son, Pepe. He's certain he's failed as a parent to him, so why should he get to regress when he couldn't even give his own child a safe and happy childhood? The guilt eats at him a lot even though Pepe wasn't really his biological son, he still feels like he should've been more involved.

He's a teacher, a fully grown man. A grown man who should be able to handle his stress and emotions normally. He's much too big physically to feel so small mentally when regressed. He shouldn't even have time to regress, he has lesson plans and homework to finish ahead of time. Or at least, that's his reasoning.

A Talk Under the Stars

Been playing DA:O again and I'm falling in love with Alistair SO hard, so I'm gonna write for him!

Enjoy and for background information: My Warden is named Melody and she is a elf mage! She's part of my series, "The Rise of Bloom Lavellan," and I just wanted to write more for her! This takes place after Alistair and Melody had their first kiss, but have not slept together. Basically, before Alistair confesses his complete feelings towards her.

Melody sat by the fire, legs crossed and a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She only wore a black top and little black shorts. It was the middle of night, but she couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned in her tent before she decided to start a fire to comfort herself.

However, the fire only pained her that night. The warmth she felt reminded her of her sister, someone who lived with her at the Circle. Only a week earlier, her and the group had gone to the Circle, looking for their help, only to be met with disaster. Abominations roamed the halls that she used to see every day. She remembered how she saw mages speaking in the halls, traveling to their lessons, or heading to bed.

Most importantly, she remembered her family and her life she had there. She had her brothers Landon and Jacob, and her sisters Delilah, Natalie, Bloom, and Sandra. Melody may have been a little older than them, but she still loved them dearly. They grew up together and so did their skills. However, she didn't learn by herself or by simple lessons. She had an intelligent, caring man who taught her and Bloom.

Irving taught them together, always paid attention to their needs and skills. With his guidance and her family, she felt safe and secure with herself. But now her life was in shambles and disarray. A new Blight had started, she got in trouble for helping her friend, got recruited as a Grey Warden to escape punishment, betrayed by one of the leaders, almost died, and when she went back to the Circle, expecting some comfort...she didn't receive it.

Instead of seeing her friends, she saw those abominations, dead bodies, and pain. The worst thing was that she didn't know if her family made it out, or...if they fell to the tragedy. That fact haunted her and she couldn't sleep for many nights, and this one was the same.

At least, it was for a few minutes. She sat in silence, her mind filled with memories, but she tuned back in when she heard someone call out to her.

"Melody?" Alistair said, his voice deep with exhaustion.

She looked over her shoulder to see Alistair outside his tent, and she gasped at what she saw. He stood with no shirt on and only his breeches. She couldn't help but look him up and down before she quickly looked back at the fire.

"W-What are you doing out so late, Alistair?" She stuttered. She heard his footsteps get closer, and she did her best to not look at him. Even if she wanted to.

He yawned. "I heard some noise, and I just want to make sure nothing is coming for us."

She laughed nervously. "W-Well, it's just me, so don't worry."

He stood behind her and tilted his head at her reaction. "What's wrong? Are you hurt?"

"I think you should put some clothes on before we speak," she explained. Her voice was quiet, but she knew he heard her.

He looked down and gasped loudly. "Oh! I'm so sorry!" He rushed back to his tent and quickly changed into clothes. He came out with a white shirt and pants on. "I-I hope this is all right."

She looked over her shoulder and smiled. "Yes, that's better." She looked back at the fire and waited for him to join her.

He sat beside her and gave her a worried look. "I'll ask again. What's wrong?"

She closed her eyes and sighed. How could she explain her pain to him? He never lived within a Circle, surrounded by so many people, and spent years studying something that never had an end. However, he did know his own type of pain. He told her the truth, explained what he lived through, so why wouldn't he understand her?

"I keep thinking about what happened at the Circle," she admitted.

"Oh," he said. His gaze turned toward the fire. "May I ask how you feel?"

She opened her eyes and looked over at him. "Almost for all of my life, I lived in the Circle. I...don't have many memories outside of the Circle's land. I met my family there," she explained quietly, as if it was a secret.

"Did you meet family within the Circle?"

She laughed. "We're not blood related, so no. I didn't meet any secret family there. I just...met new family there."

He looked back over at her. "What are they like?"

"Oh, they're all misfits. Sandra is one of the templars, and she's like a spiky teddy bear. Sweet underneath all her bluntness and awkwardness." She looked out into the distance with a fond smile. "Landon is one of the kindest templars. He cares for us mages and the other templars. He doesn't judge people based on what they're born with. He actually is really interested in magic, so I secretly shown him some when I was there."

"Are the templars not allowed to learn about magic?" He asked with confusion.

"Not exactly. They're taught to counter the magic, not learn how it's beautiful, and not just dangerous," she explained sadly. "But Landon and a few others still studied it and spoke with the other mages. He liked each one, but he trusted Bloom the most."

"Bloom?"

Her smile fell and tears welled up in her eyes. "Bloom is...one of the first friends I made in the Circle. She was eleven and I was fourteen. I had other friends, but I never felt too close to them. She's funny, kind, smart, and beautiful. She brought all of us together."

"How are the others? I bet they're just as amazing."

She nodded. "Yes, they are. Landon is very good when it comes to training, Sandra is good when it comes to remembering the books and the history of the world and templars. Delilah and Natalie are twins, but so different. Delilah is quiet, but if you catch her on a good day, then she'll be loud and playful. Natalie is a little blunt, but once you get to know her, she's kind and she always means well. They're all strong with their power." Her voice wavered as she spoke, but she pushed her tears back. "I don't know who I would be without my family, so...".

"I bet they escaped, Melody."

She looked over at him, and her tears fell. "How do you know?" Her voice was barely audible with fear.

"Your friends are smart and strong. If they're anything like you, then I know they escaped and survived." He gently wiped her tears away. "I know it hurts to be away from them, and I believe they feel the same for you." He leaned in closer and rested their foreheads together. "And I promise that you will see them again."

More tears fell. "But...what if it is I who doesn't make it?"

"No," he said firmly. "You will survive this to see them again." He cupped her cheek and wiped more tears away. "Besides," he smirked, "I want to meet them. They seem like a pretty cool family."

Despite herself, a sad laugh left her. "They are pretty cool." She cupped his cheek and smiled. "And I know they'll like you. If not, then I'll make them like you."

The two stared at each other, both quiet as they thought. Her heart still hurt, but with him by her side, her burdens felt lighter. She quickly glanced at his lips. "Can I?" She asked quietly with embarrassment.

He smiled softly. "Only if I can kiss you back."

She nodded with a big smile and leaned in to meet him. She had kissed someone before, but she never felt anything. However, with Alistair, it was different. His lips were soft each time they kissed, and she wondered how. They fought on and on with darkspawn, yet he was never different. He was soft on the inside and on the outside.

Bloom was right. Melody loved the puppy boys.

They pulled away and she giggled at his face. He had a look of awe on his face, as if he saw the sun for the first time.

He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "You look so beautiful, you know?"

She ran a hand through his hair. "You're quite handsome," she joked.

He kissed her on the forehead. "Do you...feel like sleeping?" She lifted an eyebrow in response, and his face turned bright red. "No! I-I mean, just actually sleep in the tent. I would never-".

She giggled so hard she had to hold her stomach. "I know, Alistair. But, yes, I'd like to sleep. As long as you're with me."

He stood up and held out a hand. "I'll be with you as long as you want," he said gently.

She hesitated for a moment. She had kissed him, and admitted some of her feelings, but she still felt nervous. He wasn't a templar, but she wondered if he'd still hurt her or later hate her because of her magic. However, she didn't know the future, she only knew the present, and the present was great for her.

She stood up and took his hand. "Thank you, Alistair."

The two walked to her tent and both slept peacefully, for the first time in a long time.

ANYWAYS! I love Alistair and my Melody :). They're both precious and I'm just so happy to write for them. But I don't know why, it was difficult to write it! I just!! Couldn't!! But I like to think this is good!
