the way people care more about jason fighting tim than like any other rogue fighting tim during his robin run is...!
"they're brothers! jason is so horrible to attack his little brother."
aside from the obvious twinkification of tim, stop pushing the family narrative on two people who did not see each other as siblings at that moment.
#and also stop seeing tim as a 5 year old#jason fought him to prove a point#sometimes i wish he really did some serious damage to tim just so you guys would have something reasonable to complain about#gosh a 16-17yr old crime fighter who fights people like bane for a living definitely has trauma from a guy two years older than him#fighting him#yes jason todd the kid who was murdered for being robin would definitely go out and kill the next kid who is robin#because yessss his whole point is that he's jealous of the next robin and therefore needs to harm him worse than the joker harmed jason#like please i'm so tired of this discourse#why the fuck would jason- the child murder victim who died as robin and bc of batman taking on a child soldier- want to kill the next robin#you'd think the narrative that jason tried to kill tim would only be in like some fics#but nope! it's in every goddamn batfam fic i've ever read to this day#not even exaggerating#anti tim drake#anti batfam#jason todd#red hood#batman#dc

Dead Clown đ€Ą
Jason todd x reader
Warning: smut, murder but itâs okay.
Jason pulled his helmet off and ignored the rain that poured down his face. He had to see this without a filter. He even considered taking off the domino mask but he was out in the open. The pouring freezing rain had him shivering but Jason was unaware. He literally couldnât believe the sight before him.
The joker was laying in his back, the pasty skin on his forehead was marred by 2 small holes. The back of his stupid green hair looked almost black when mixed with blood. Blood and water mixed in a pink puddle around his head. Jason forced himself to check for a pulse before hitting his comms.
âBats, you need to get down here,â he said in a shocked voice. âThe joker is dead.â
â..... are you okay,â Bruce said in a measured voice.
âIâm fine. He was dead when I got here,â Jason added knowing he was number one suspect.
âOn the way.â
Batman and Red Robin showed up shortly with Robin not far behind. It didnât take long for the detectives to believe Jasonâs innocence. The evidence didnât match him.
Jason sat on a piece of concrete near the scene as they worked. He had hoped to see this for years now. But it wasnât the same. Maybe it was because Jason didnât get his revenge or because it looked too neat. Two quick shots to the brain. Probably didnât even see it coming before he was lights out.
Bruce walked over to him as the other two took photos and bagged evidence. A little blood here. Some fabric fibers there. No fingerprints because of the heavy rain but a bullet casing.
âDid you see who shot him?â
âNo B. I literally got here and he was already out. He was supposed to have a drug drop but I guess that didnât happen,â Jason said with a shrug.
âYou were going to fight him alone,âBruce said with a raised brow.
âNo. Just reconnaissance. I would have called it in,â Jason defended himself. Bruce gave him a side look before moving on to the case.
âCommissioner Gordon is on the way,â Tim said. He held bags of evidence carefully in his lanky fingers. âWeâre finish collecting-â
âCan we go home, father? Itâs freezing cold,â Damian interrupted. Bruce sighed before looking at him.
âRed Robin was talking but yes, you both should back to the cave to process everything. Red Hood, you too. The commissioner knows you have a history with the joker so itâs best you leave too. Iâll take care of this,â Bruce said carefully. Any wrong word might set Jason off with his trauma over the death of his murderer.
âUh yeah, sure man,â Jason said clearly distracted. He would usually argue with everything Bruce said and this made Bruce even more worried for the young man. He sent a quick message to Dick before the commission met got there.
ââââââââââ
âWeâre running the tests right now and there really isnât much else to do. Robin already went to bed. Go home Hood and get some sleep,â Tim said by the computers. Jason hadnât bothered to get out of his suit or shower.
âHow long? How long until you get results?â
âOh, uhhh maybe 12 hours? A while. Sorry DNA testing isnât like in the movies. The meta or clone tests are even longer. It probably wonât be until tomorrow night that we know anything,â Tim said turning in his chair. âGet some sleep.â
Jason considered giving him a nasty comment but held it. He certainly felt dead on his feet and had a nice warm woman waiting at home for him.
âCall when you know anything,â he said with a growl.
âYeesh, yeah. I will,â Tim said backing away. âSay it. Donât spray it,â he muttered as Jason walked away.
âââââââââââ
Jason trudged into the apartment leaving wet clothing in his wake until he stumbled to bed in nothing but his boxer briefs. You were going to be mad at him for the mess in the morning but that could wait. He looked at you asleep on the bed. You looked so sweet and innocent. Like an angel compared to his dirty hands that practically dripped blood every night.
He slid under the blanket and pressed close to your warm form. You gasped awake before relaxing when you realized it was just Jason. Did you not realize he could kill you 84 different ways in your sleep? It didnât really matter as you snuggled your head into the crook of his neck and slid your legs to entangle with his. Jasonâs arms automatically wrapped around you and rubbed your back until your breathing was even in sleep. He stared at the ceiling until the hint of dusk could be seen outside.
Jason woke with a gasp followed by a moan as he felt perfect wet heat encompass his dick. He looked down to see the blankets move rhythmically as you slid your mouth along his dick. He blinked himself more awake to truly enjoy it.
It wasnât the first time you had woken him as such but it was certainly a rare occurrence. Reserved for birthdays and Christmas, he couldnât imagine what he did to deserve such a wonderful wake up.
âFuck! Princess,â he groaned as you swirled before taking him deep. You hummed questionably.
âWhat did I, mmmm, do to deserve such a fuck! Perfect mouth. Perfect wake up,â he said pushing covers down to show you between his legs. You looked up at him with big innocent eyes as you licked long hot strips up his cock. You took him deep in your mouth before sliding off with a pop.
âI canât spoil you?â You purred and he twitched. How did he get so lucky? âDo you want to finish in my mouth or can I ride you first?â You asked and he god honest choked on his spit.
âBaby, *cough* whatever you want, what. Ever. you want,â he said and you grinned before climbing up his body to straddle him. His hands ran along the side of your body before gripping your hips. You sunk down on him with a little mewl.
âFuck Princess, youâre so wet. Do you like... do you like sucking my cock?â He asked breathlessly.
âOf course, Jaybird. Sometimes I touch myself when I blow you, like today,â you admitted with a sweet little giggle. He almost came right them. How could you say the dirtiest things while being the sweetest person heâd ever known?
Jason reached his thumb down to rub your clit as you moved. You whined before nodding at him. Your mouth fell open and your hips sped up. He knew that you werenât going to last long. You really did get hot and bothered blowing him. You made little whined and whimpers before moaning his name loudly as you came. Your body clenching on him was enough and he thrust up into you as he came as well. You bent down and kissed him deeply. Jason was panting by the time you pulled back.
âLoved that for sure, but what the hell was that, Princess,â Jason asked breathlessly as you climbed off and threw on some clothing. You chuckled a little before tossing him his boxers.
âJust wanted to wake you up this morning. Do you want some pancakes, Jay,â you asked. He sat up and pulled them on.
âYou certainly did. And I never say no to food. Especially my favorite food,â Jason said with a grin. âIs it secretly my birthday? Am I dying and youâre prepping me beforehand?â
You laughed. âYou already did that, baby.â
Jason gasped a little before laughing.
âI just wanted to treat you like you deserve. Pick a movie. Thereâs a new slasher out that you can tear apart,â you said walking in the kitchen and grinned at Jasonâs heart eye look he gave you.
He looked through the movies without paying them much mind. Heâd seen the joker dead the day before and now his girlfriend was spoiling him. He didnât know what to think about. Heâd think about the joker finally being dead. He couldnât hurt Jason or those near him any more. Youâd been kidnapped 6 months earlier and it had almost ripped Jason apart when he found you bloody and beaten. Luckily alive though.
Then he thought about how sweet you were. A perfect angel who had nothing to do with that life. You couldnât kill someone if you tried. He just wanted to keep you in an innocent bubble, especially after being kidnapped.
âJay? Jason?â You said near him and he jumped. He had been so lost in thought that he didnât notice you coming over to him with a plate of food. Heart shaped pancakes covered in whipped cream stared up at him and Jason had a little grin on his face.
âSorry, thanks. This looks good,â he said and you grinned before sitting with your own. Jason turned on a movie and sat next to you to eat.
Jasonâs phone rang.
He gave you an apologetic look before answering.
âYeah,â he answered before quickly standing up to talk in another room. Definitely bat business, it sounded like. He came back in a few minutes putting on his suit. He bent and shoved most of a pancake in his mouth. Jason pulled you to your feet and swirled you around before holding you by the waist. You giggled.
âWhatâs gotten into you?â
âIâve got to work. But when I get back, Iâm making up for this morning, okay? Breakfast was amazing,â he said before pulling you into a dizzying kiss. You nodded before he left.
ââââââââââ
Jason arrived at the cave and realized something was instantly wrong. Tim, Dick, Damian, Bruce, and even Alfred were waiting for him around the computers. He slowly walked up. They didnât think he did it, did they? Jason looked around in case of a fight.
âI have some bad news,â Dick said. Jason just stared at him. Dick sighed. âWe know who killed the joker. You wonât like it. You- you might want to sit down.â
Jason frowned at his tone. It was the tone you used when telling a kid their parents died. He looked at the computer to see surveillance footage of the roof where he found the joker. He clenched his fist as the mad man walked in the screen.
âYou know, this is the worst meeting place in the world,â joker said with a laugh. Jasonâs eyebrows rose. He hasnât expected audio. âSo what do you have that I might want on the birds?â
A female voice off camera could be heard saying, âpeace of mind.â
âDoubt you could give me that Princess,â he said in a mocking tone. His posture was casual even though the lower half of a womanâs body had walked into the screen and she held a gun in hand pointed at him. She froze at his words.
Jason couldnât look away if he wanted to.
âYeah, I know,â joker said. âI forget faces. Too many changing and quite a few people are a little two faced,â he said with a laugh. âBut I never forget a voice. You sounded so much more sweet when you were crying tied to a chair. And the way you sobbed when I brought out the crowbar.... music to my ears. I bet it just reminded you of a certain bird that just didnât quite make it the first time.â
âShut up. I- I donât care,â she said. Jasonâs heart was in his throat. He knew exactly who that was before Timâs DNA tests were complete. She moved around a little nervously.
âHoney, Princess,â he said drawn out in a mock of Jasonâs voice. âUnless you plan on using that gun, put it down and we can play a game. You like games? You play one with the red bat all the time. Does he know? Does he know that youâve been hunting me for.... geez, since you were kidnapped Iâd bet.â
âNow drop that gun and I show you what pain really feels like,â he growled and she shot him in the forehead before he moved. He made a disconnected sound before falling to his knee, perfect height to be seen in the camera. She shot him again between the eyes and he fell back silently. His body splashed on the rainy roof before blood began to pool behind his head. The woman looked for a second, her body language painfully stiff, before running out the way she came.
The cave was silent as Jason realized what he just saw. He blinked a few times before clearing his throat. Has she- did she-??
âI assume the DNA matches?â He asked and Tim nodded before sliding him a paper copy. 98% match. Only chance it wasnât you was an evil twin or clone but no, he noticed the clothing and mannerisms. It was you.
âAre you going to bring her in?â Bruce asked quietly and Jason gaped.
âI sure as shit ainât. She killed the man who kidnapped her and abused her. That sounds like self defense to me,â he defended. Dick looked at him in pity and Jason quickly looked away.
âIt was premeditated, Jason,â Bruce reminded him.
âI know. Iâll take care of it. Sheâs not going to prison. Iâll talk to her,â he said. Bruce gave him a hard look. âYou come near her- I swear to god, Bruce. Iâll shoot you myself.â
Jason got up to leave. Dick moved out of his way. He wasnât getting in this.
âJason,â Bruce said but Jason was already gone.
ââââââââââ
Jason was a pretty smart guy but he was completely shocked at this moment. What possessed you to kill the joker? To seek him out? A man that tried to kill you and you were willing to meet him alone? Not even Jason wanted to do that. And that morning you were treating Jason special. He thought for a second that you killed the joker for him. It chilled him to the bone but he put that thought out of his head. No, you had your own reasons to do it.
Jason walked in the apartment cautiously. Who knows how you would be acting, the perfect girlfriend or finally breaking down when you realized you killed a man. He found you in the bedroom asleep. You didnât look like you had just killed someone and for a second Jason had doubt but the video and DNA didnât lie.
He crawled in bed with you. You pulled him close and laid your head on his chest and Jasonâs heart hurt. You looked fine but killing people left scars and your first time killing someone was not something you forget.
You woke with a gasp and cry hours later. You trembled and grasped at Jason tightly. He woke up confused before pulling you closer.
âHey, Princess, Iâm right here. Youâre okay,â he said rubbing your back and holding you close. âWhatâs going on?â
âI see him. When I sleep. Every time,â you breathed almost in tears. Jason kissed your cheek and he felt wetness on your skin. You had been crying. He didnât want to ask but now was as good a time as any.
âPrincess, what did you do last night?â Jason asked so quietly. You looked up at him quickly and it confirmed everything he needed to know.
âNothing. I was here. All night. Wh-why?â You asked, lying terribly. Jason sighed. He closed his eyes before willing himself to speak.
âYou know Iâm a detective. I can tell that youâre lying,â Jason started gently.
âWhat does that mean,â you said a little too quickly. Your breathing started to speed up again and Jason hated the look of fear on your face.
âIâm not mad. I wonât turn you in. Just tell me what happened,â he said softly, watching you intently. You wanted to shrink away a little.
âI canât,â you whispered. Your eyes started to water and you blinked them away.
âDid you do it? Did you kill him? I can help you,â Jason said and you froze. âTalk to me.â
âI-I did,â you said looking at him in terror. Your eyes were red rimmed. âI did.â
âIâm sorry,â he said pulling you tight to his body. You broke down in little sobs and clung to him. âIâm so sorry that you thought you had to. I should have. Iâm sorry.â He wrapped you up and made little shhh noises and you cried until you fell back asleep.
You woke up later with a pounding headache wrapped up tightly against Jason. He was on his phone but sat it down when he saw you were up.
âHey,You donât have to worry about it. Iâve taken care of everything,â he said ever so gently. You nodded.
âWhat does that mean?â You asked slowly.
âRed Hood took the wrap on it. No great loss with one less psycho in Gotham. Harley Quinn had an impromptu parade with hyenas and jugglers and everything. Nightwing made an appearance. Dick said Barbie slept through the night for the first time in months and she said sheâd help you with anything you need,â Jason said trying to be positive. You gave him a dry smile.
âThatâs nice. What about- what about Batman?â You asked.
âHeâs Batman. But heâll get over it. And the next time you kill a murderous clown, let me help. He could have killed you. And if anyone knows how to hide a body, itâs me,â Jason said giving you a squeezing hug. You smiled despite yourself.
âIâll remember that. Iâm a little sad I missed the hyena parade,â you admitted.
âOh sheâs having a parade every day this week. An anonymous donor gave her a ton of fireworks. Fairly certain it was Tim,â Jason said.

Jason Todd is definitely not the angry Robin, and neither is Dick Grayson.
Reducing the two of them down to an emotion that they both are very much entitled to feel is not a great way to characterize them bothâmakes them two-dimensional. When I see panels go âJason wasnât the angry Robin, Dick was!â with well picked out comics of Jason being a cutie, wanting to do his homework, Bruce calling him Jay and Lad, and panels of Dick from Dark Victory where heâs in a perpetual state of grief and despair and bottomless rage, I think to myself of how this isnât really solving anything.
Keep in mind that Dick in Dark Victory, is FRESH from his parents murder. He witnessed it first hand, is completely certain that it was no accident, and has lost every sense of belonging. A constant heâs had for all his yearsâa home (the circus) a family, being surrounded by people who love you. It is understandable why he would regress to a state of anger to leash his grief. To soothe it. Heâs a tiny little boy in it too (which in addition, is a great detail imo bc it shows how young he was) and vengeance governs his actions.
AGAIN, if we continue on to Robin: Year One, we see a Dickie whoâs dealing with the grief and anger. Heâs playing basketball with his friends. Heâs talking to girls. Heâs making puns as he fights criminals. Heâs painfully smart and heâs incredible. Robin: Year One is one of my fav comics ever. His dynamic with Bruce, his run with Two-Face etc. But this isnât about that so let me get back to my main point.
Does Dick Grayson have anger issues? Yes he does. He had a lot of them. But does that make him the âAngry Robinâ? Not really. He was more than that. All of them were.
At the same time, Jason doesnât need to be a super sweet cute 14 year old all the damn time to not be labeled the âAngry Robin.â In Death in the Family, he WAS flipping out. He WAS angry. And that anger is JUSTIFIED. Jason grew up dirt poor in a neighborhood where he probably never believed heâd make a name for himself or have an adult look out for him. Bruce making him Robin and providing him school and shelter and food does not make all that trauma go away. Traumatized poor street children have the right to be angry at the unfairness of life, they have the right to be furious at the men who hurt kids like him.
Reducing them to just one personality trait or emotion just takes away so much nuance and context. 14 year old Jason Todd can be in the drama club and finish his English Essay 3 days before itâs due and help Alfred with the cooking and STILL want to beat the f*ck out of a child abuser. Heâs allowed to be a sweet kid and want to make a change and save kids like him and heâs allowed to be angry at the scum on the streets who have hurt him! Jason Todd is a kid who KNOWS what it was likeâand he wants to help.
And yes, folks, itâs classist to think the lower class poor little street kid who was taken in by Brucie Wayne is just some angry violent little brat. He was not. But if he punches you in the face for it then thatâs a well deserved punch!

Taking Chances Ch. 28:Â Summer Changes (School)
AO3
Prev
A week after the Disney movie marathon, Marinette was finally back on patrol. No thanks to her dad though. If it was up to him, sheâd probably never patrol again. Luckily for her, (unluckily for him) her brothers were adamant on her coming back to the field. Which led to her current problem. Hanging upside down from a gargoyle near Wayne Enterprises.
âUkht, what have you done?â Damian asks, and though she canât see his face, she can tell by his voice that heâs exasperated. Join the club, she thinks, at least youâre not upside down.
âWhy do you automatically think I did something?â She asks, trying desperately to turn around so that she can talk to him. It was really awkward talking to someone when you couldnât see them but you knew they were near you.
âBecause you are the one hanging upside down,â Damian says flatly. She huffs.
âItâs not like I want to be, Robin. It just kind of happened,â She says.
âAnd how exactly did it happen? I have never seen your yoyo betray you like that before. Not even in the videos when you were still very new.â Damian says, and she swears heâs smirking. Heâs definitely laughing at her on the inside, and as much as she wants to be frustrated, she canât. It wasnât easy amusing her little brother (unless you were an animal) so she wasnât about to ruin it.
âHood made a bet relating to this exact gargoyle and Iâd never been this way before and I just, I donât know. Somehow I misjudged where my yoyo was going and next thing I know, Iâm tied up and Hood is gone.â She says, sighing.
âWhere did he go?â Damian asks.
âOver here so I could record the dumbass trying to untie herself.â Jason says with a snort, she manages to turn just enough so she can see him and stick her tongue out at him. He chuckles. âYouâre the one who somehow tied herself up with a magic string, Iâm just getting the proof so I can show Wonder Woman.â He says and Marinetteâs jaw drops.
âYou wouldnât dare!â She screams, struggling against her yoyo, finally able to get the string to loosen slightly.
âOh, Iâd dare.â Jason says and Marinette just knows he has a huge smirk underneath his stupid helmet.
âBut Wonder Woman is the coolest person ever and she canât see me like this!â Marinette complains, trying not to grin when she feels the string start to move the way she needs it to. She ignores Jasonâs next remark, instead focusing on the string and- yes! She free falls for a moment, laughing at her brothersâ panic before she swoops up and jerks Jasonâs phone away from him.
âYou little shit!â He calls after her, starting to chase her.
âYouâll get it back once I delete the videos!â She calls back, laughing as she continues swinging through Gotham, a warm feeling in her chest as she looks over the city that has quickly become her second home.
---
âHAPPY BIRTHDAY!â A voice screams, making Marinette jump out of bed with a yelp. She clutches her hand over her heart, glaring at her oldest brother.
âAre you trying to make sure I donât make it past my fifteenth birthday?â She asks with a huff. Dick just grins.
âHappy birthday kiddo! I canât believe youâre already fifteen!â He exclaims, picking her up in a giant hug. She wants to complain, ask him to let her down, but itâs nice, so instead she returns the hug the best she can. Until she glances out the window.
âRichard Grayson.â She says in a tone she usually reserves for enemies. She feels him stiffen, the hug turning into more of a restraint than a cuddle.
âYes?â He says.
âDid you honestly wake me up, before the sun, because itâs my birthday?â She asks.
âYes?â He says, his voice cracking slightly. She purses her lips and lets out a long sigh.
âDad has a no killing rule.â She says, and suddenly sheâs back on the ground.
âOh would you look at the time, Marâi needs another bedtime story loveyousomuchgottagobye.â Dick rushes out, practically sprinting out of her room. She just smiles and shakes her head. Sheâd learned intimidation tactics from Jason and Damian, who both claimed her size made her an easy target against bad guys. They were right, of course, so she was fine with a few extra lessons. Seems they were working. Deciding to call her Maman and Papa since sheâs already awake, she frowns as it goes straight to voicemail. It would be nearly eleven in Paris, so the bakery shouldnât be too busy. She quickly checks the Akuma Alert App to make sure she hadnât missed anything while she slept. Nothing. So why werenât they answering? She had assumed they would be waiting for her call since it was the first birthday sheâd spent without them. Sighing, she lays back down on her bed, closing her eyes and trying to fall back asleep.
As she lays there, she frowns as a realization hits her. This was the anniversary of her birth motherâs death. Her mood instantly sours and her stomach churns. It was the first year that she could do something about it, the first year she could visit her grave. Quickly making a decision, Marinette throws on a pair of black leggings and an oversized black hoodie. Hopefully no one would spot her.
âKaalki.â Marinette calls out quietly, not wanting to wake Tikki (who had somehow slept through Dickâs intrusion).
âOooo, Guardian, are we sneaking out?â They ask, an amused smile on their face. Marinette frowns.
âYes, but itâs for a good reason.â She says, and Kaalki snorts.
âWhatever the reason, Iâm happy to be of assistance.â They reassure her. Marinette smiles and calls the transformation, opening a portal in the cemetery where her birth mother is buried. Her Maman had taken her once, right after telling her she was adopted. It was extremely hard to avoid being akumatized that day, and Marinette steels herself before dropping Kaalkiâs transformation. Today would probably be even harder. Pulling the hood over her head to try and hide her identity, she glances around the cemetery, unsurprised to see the small place empty. Despite its small size, it was well taken care of, with beautiful trees adding shade and creating a melancholy feeling. Taking a deep breath, she walks over to the tombstone in the far corner, underneath the Willow tree. Bridgette Le. Died July 9th. Marinette barely notices the tears that start to form as she sits down, tucking her knees into her chest.
âHi Mama. I-Iâm sorry I havenât really been by to see you much. Did you know Iâve been spending the summer with Dad? Sometimes, I wonder if you wouldâve been okay with that. None of us really know why you left, why you didnât tell him. Iâm not blaming you, I just wonder if you wouldâve been okay with me knowing him.â She talks, though she knows sheâll never hear a response. And she tries to pretend that fact doesnât hurt her. âI have brothers. Four of them. Theyâre all great in their own ways, but they all also make me want to rip my hair out. Three of them are older, Damianâs younger than me. He kinda acts like a big brother at times though. And I have a big sister, Cass. She doesnât say much, but sheâs awesome. Sheâs in Hong Kong right now, so most of our conversations have been video calls. I have a niece, too.â Marinette stops, wiping furiously at her eyes. She didn't want to cry. At all. But knowing her birth mother would never be able to be part of her life, would never know any of these people like she did- it was hard.
âGuardian, please breathe.â Kaalki says, floating up to sit in front of Marinetteâs face. Marinette blinks at the Kwami before listening to them. If they were worried, then Marinette was more lost in her head than she originally thought.
âAnd todayâs my birthday. I was excited at first, and then I remembered the other thing that this day was. Remembered that itâs also the day you-â Marinette pauses, and grits her teeth. âI am so sorry, Mama. I am so sorry that I caused your death.â She chokes out, dropping her head onto her knees, trying to suppress the sobs threatening to break out of her chest.
âWe need to go. Marinette, we need to go.â Kaalki urges, patting her cheek urgently. Marinette calls the transformation and falls through a portal, closing it quickly to keep the butterfly that was surely after her from following. She definitely didnât need to test how far the victim had to be to be akumatized. The second she lands, she lets the transformation drop and the sobs break out.
âShit Pixie.â Jason curses, and suddenly sheâs wrapped in a warm hug, sobs tearing through her as she continues to apologize.
---
Jason Todd had been through a lot of weird shit. Waking up in a pool of green water after being fucking murdered by the Joker, was weird. Emotional baby sister falling through a portal into the room and sobbing? Also weird. But also heartbreaking. He grabs onto her and just holds her, desperately trying to give her some type of comfort.
âShhhh, itâs okay Pix. I got you.â He mumbles, holding her close. Damian rushes in, sword drawn, face scrunched up when he sees them. Jason shakes his head, this wasnât something that they could fix with a sword. He wasnât exactly sure why his baby sister was crying so hard, but he had caught a couple of muffled apologies, so whatever it was, he didnât think it was something that he (or Damian) could kill. Or, rather, maim, since she was against murdering people that were against her for some reason.
âHas anyone seen Mars, sheâs not in her room-â Replacement starts, freezing as he walks into the room.
âExcellent situational awareness, Drake.â Damian mutters, glaring at him. Jason shoots both of them a glare, now was not the time to be fighting. Especially since the kidâs other parents were on their way to celebrate her birthday. If they showed up and she was sobbing, theyâd take her home and never let them see her again. And Jason was NOT going to let that happen.
âAnyone know if Mâs decided to not kill me yet?â Dick asks, walking into the room with a huge grin that falls the second he sees whatâs happening. Jason resists the urge to roll his eyes. Apparently none of his brothers could read a fucking room. Instead of staying at the edge of the room like Damian and Tim, Dick walks over.
âHey kiddo, itâs okay. Weâre here.â He says softly. The kid pulls away from him, though he can tell itâs a little reluctantly, before launching herself at Dick, her sobs starting to die down. Jason lets out a short huff, running his fingers through his hair as he tries to think of what could have set her off. There were no akuma alarms, but she fell out of a portal. Which means she was out of the manor when she got upset. He watches as Dick pats her hair gently and whispers to her. God, heâs such a dad. Then again, heâs been mother henning him and their other brothers for years, so itâs not really a surprise.
âIâm sorry guys.â Marinette says suddenly, her voice small as she stays hidden in Dickâs arms.
âNo need to apologize, Pixie Pop.â Jason reassures her. She finally pulls away from Dick and Jasonâs heart, honest to god breaks at the broken look on her face.
âShe died in childbirth, you know.â She whispers, and suddenly it makes sense. Why she was sitting there sobbing on her birthday, why sheâd fallen out of a portal.
âThat is not your fault.â Damian says firmly, walking over and standing face to face with Marinette, something Jason knew annoyed the girl. Damian was two years younger, but a little taller than her. She didnât seem to mind now, though.
âBut it was. If I hadnât been born-â She starts and Jason frowns at the thought.
âThe world would be a much shittier place.â He says with finality, not leaving room for her to argue. âPix, youâre amazing, and the world would really suck without you. Never be sorry you were born.â Jason says firmly, stumbling slightly when she launches herself at him, wrapping her arms around him tightly.
âThank you Jay.â She mumbles, and he can tell sheâs crying again, but this time itâs not sobs, so he thinks itâs fine.
âCome on, letâs all watch a movie.â Repla- Tim suggests and Jason raises an eyebrow at the idea, briefly wondering what kind of movie heâd pick. They all pile on the giant sectional that Bruce had bought specifically for impromptu movie nights as Tim sticks the DVD in. Jason just snorts as the title card for âThe Addams Familyâ comes on, settling back in the couch, ready to watch one of the greatest movies ever.
---
âThank you again for flying us out here for her birthday.â Sabine says, smiling at him. Bruce returns the smile and nods.
âOf course, thank you for letting her spend the summer here. I know sheâs appreciated the break from her classmates.â He says, his smile quickly fading at the confused look on both Sabine and Tomâs faces.
âWhat do you mean?â Tom asks.
âMarinette hasnât told you?â Bruce asks, suddenly regretting bringing it up. Why hadnât she said anything? They were her parents too. Sure, sheâd made it clear they couldnât know about Ladybug, but her class wasnât a hero problem. They were a civilian problem.
âWe knew that she wasnât hanging out with them as often, and that she didnât talk about her class as much as she used to. We just assumed that she was busy.â Sabine says, her face a mixture of sadness and anger.
âMy apologies, I assumed sheâd talked to you.â Bruce says, feeling as if he had crossed a line. Would they be mad at him, for her telling him something she hadnât told them?
âSheâs always looking out for others first,â Tom finally sighs, a tired smile on his face. âShe probably thought she was saving us from being akumatized.â Bruceâ jaw clenches. Had Marinette really suffered in silence to avoid being forced to fight her parents?
âWe can continue this conversation later, right now we should focus on her birthday.â Sabine says, placing a hand on Tomâs arm. He nods and Bruce makes a note to talk to the two about the possibility of her switching schools.
âSheâs probably in her room.â Bruce says, leading the two towards the stairs.
âActually, Master Bruce, the children are all in the informal sitting room. I believe they snuck down to have a movie night after Master Dick woke Miss Marinette to wish her a happy birthday.â Alfred says, Bruce watches his face and knows thatâs not all, but doesnât press. It had to be something that he couldnât talk about in front of the Dupain Chengâs.
âOf course they did. Thank you, Alfred. Alfred, this is Sabine Cheng and Tom Dupain, Marinetteâs parents. Tom, Sabine, this is Alfred Pennyworth. Heâs the man who raised me.â Bruce says, smiling at him. The three exchange pleasantries and soon Bruce is leading the two to the sitting room. He pushes the door open gently, careful not to let it slam. He spots a sword on the floor near Damian and quickly grabs it, moving it away. If he was woken up suddenly, he would still panic and attempt to fight his way out.
âShe looks so peaceful.â Sabine whispers, and Bruce smiles, a genuine smile, he didnât have to fake a smile when most of his children were together and safe and happy. Or, quiet, at least. It was rare.
âIâve found them like this several times.â Bruce admits, pulling out his phone to show the two all of the pictures heâd taken of the kids piled together sleeping. Sabine and Tom smile widely at the pictures and Bruce quickly sends them their favorites.
âB, I swear to god, I can sense you in here. Let us sleep.â Jason mumbles grumpily.
âSorry Jason, Marinetteâs parents are here so itâs time to get up.â Bruce says, amused at the way his sonâs hair was attempting to defy gravity. Jason looked around sleepily, waved lazily at Sabine and Tom, and then collapsed back on the couch. Bruce sighs. âWould the two of you like to have a cup of coffee while we give them a few more minutes to sleep?â He offers.
âThat would be lovely.â Sabine says, and Bruce leads the two to the kitchen, hoping Tim (who had sat straight up after Jason flopped down) would take the hint and wake up the others.
---
Marinette sighs happily as everyone sits down at the table for dinner. The day had been amazing, despite the rough start. And her Dad had even flown her Maman and Papa out to spend the day with her. They couldnât stay for long, they had the bakery to run after all, but it was still nice to see them. Marinette glances at the end of the table where a place was set, but no one sat.
âWhatâs with the extra plate?â Jason asks, turning to Alfred who was sitting in the chair next to it instead of his regular seat.
âIt is for Miss Le.â He says, and she can almost feel everyone freeze. Her throat tightens, but she still smiles at him with watery eyes.
âThank you, Alfred.â She says quietly. He nods.
âYou are quite welcome, Miss.â He says. She clears her throat and looks back at her Maman, noticing that her smile was also a little sad. It had been all day, but Marinette was certain it wasnât anything to worry about. Bridgette had been close with her Maman, surely she was just mourning her today, openly for the first time in a long time.
---
Marinette groans at whoever is trying to wake her up.
âFive more minutes.â She mutters, burrowing deeper under the covers. It was summer break, why wouldnât anyone let her sleep?
âCome on sweetheart, your Papa and I want to talk to you and Bruce.â Her Maman says, and she immediately sits up. Was she in trouble? Had her Maman figured out the whole Batman thing? Had she figured out the Ladybug thing?
âUh, okay.â She says, sliding out of bed and stepping into slippers. She wasnât sure how serious the conversation was, but since her Maman didnât stop her from walking out of the room in her pajamas, she relaxed slightly. It couldnât be that serious, right? She follows her Maman into her Dadâs study, glancing wearily at the clock in the corner. Her Maman was often too observant. Hopefully she didnât notice anything odd about the clock. They all sit in silence for an entire minute until Marinette canât handle it anymore.
âAm I in trouble?â She asks hesitantly, looking between her parentsâ faces.
âOf course not, we just- We noticed how different you are.â Her Maman says and Marientte frowns, furrowing her eyebrows. Different? She was different?
âHow?â She asks.
âYouâre happier than Iâve seen you in months honey. Your smile reaches your eyes, you talk freely, you seem peaceful.â Her Maman says softly, and Marinette blinks in surprise. Had she really been so easy to read in Paris? Had her parents really been able to tell? Sheâd wanted to hide it from them, not let them see how everything was piling on her, crushing her. She didnât want to worry them.
âWhat do you- how-â She stumbles over her words, trying to figure out where she messed up.
âWe didnât know why until we talked to Bruce.â Her Papa says and she turns to glare at her Dad, feeling a little betrayed. He holds up his hands in surrender.
âMarinette, you didnât tell me not to tell them about your class.â He reminds her, and she huffs.
âGuess we can cross mind reader off the list of things you can do.â She mumbles, making her Papa snort.
âIt wasnât just that though. Weâd seen how restrained you had become, how you never went out with friends and you stopped talking about them.â Her Maman says softly. Marinette grits her teeth, hugging herself to try and hold herself together.
âI didnât want to worry you.â She says, her voice barely audible. That wasnât the main reason though. She didnât want to fight her parents, and if they knew everything going on with Lila, theyâd definitely be akumatized. She couldnât fight them. Not if she could help it.
âWhat would you say about transferring schools?â Her Maman asks suddenly, and Marinette jerks her head up, looking at her with wide eyes. Transfer schools? It would be great, amazing, fantastic, but- but her classmates would still come to the bakery. Still give her the same odd looks theyâd been giving her since they found out that sheâs a Wayne.
âWhat school?â She asks, because yes, that makes a difference. Chloe had transferred schools not long ago, and Marinette did not want to trade Lila for Chloe. Sheâd rather not deal with either of them, if she was being honest.
âGotham Academy.â Her Maman says, and Marinette feels lucky that she wasnât drinking anything, because she would have definitely done a spit take. Gotham Academy? As in, live in Gotham year round? What-
âAre you giving me up?â She asks, suddenly hurt. Her Mamanâs eyes widen and her Papa pulls her into a giant hug.
âOf course not honey.â He says, rubbing her back gently and squeezing her lightly.
âWe asked Bruce if he thought Gotham Academy would be a good school for you. He offered to let you fly home some weekends, and any of the breaks you want. Or to fly us out here if you have time off school. You donât have to say yes, and you donât have to make a decision right now.â Her Maman reassures her as her Papa lets her go. Marinette turns to look at her Dad, his face unreadable.
âWould you really be okay with that?â She asks, and he nods.
âWe all just want you to be happy, Marinette. Wherever that may be. And weâre all willing to work together to do that.â He says and she smiles, letting out a soft sigh.
âI- Iâd need to think about it a little more,â She says, running through the idea in her head. It seemed perfect, besides the whole âbouncing back to Paris for attacksâ thing. But sheâd been doing it all summer, it had been fine so far. And maybe, maybe, Hawkmoth would even be defeated by the end of summer. No matter what, things were changing and Marinette was trying her best to keep up.

Batman: Death in the Family Review (SPOILERS)

This is going to be long.
I originally had no interest in watching this mainly because it's based off a story where its only significance is Jason's death. The thing that won me over was the "choose your adventure" type which is an interesting style to do for this particular event. The three main selections are Jason cheats death, Robin dies and Batman saves Robin. Of those 3, only 1 of them was the most interesting. But before I do that, let me go over why the other 2 were disappointing.
Robin dies choice is basically a rehash of the Under the Red Hood animated movie only its shortened and narrated by Bruce as he is speaking to Clark Kent at a diner. All it is a repeat of shit we knew. Bruce blames himself for the path he set Jason on and Clark giving a hopeful message of finding Jason. All this choice does is add an extended ending.

Robin cheats death one puts Jason having gone through surgery, having his skin grafted and stitched up from the explosion. The trauma and pain has Jason resent Bruce for the life he been put into and basically becomes Hush. He goes after criminals (btw decapitating Nygma, waay too much) which gets the attention of of Talia Al Ghul where she proposes an alliance with Jason while also taking in baby Damian under his tutelage. The problem isnt the story itself bit that it had so much potential. Seriously it could have been Batman:Hush as well as seeing where this conflict between Bruce and Jason will end now that Talia and Damian are in the equation. Btw Talia fans, this is probably the only ending with the character you are gonna like.
Batman saves Robin okay this is the one with multiple choices involved and goes down interesting paths for some of them. So Batman saves Robin but in doing so, he dies and Robin lives, and Nightwing becomes Batman (cool I guess, too bad they never gave him any dialogue). The first choice given is whether Jason chases/arrests the Joker or Kills him.
Kill Joker option where Jason is at a Diner and talks with this stranger who is revealed to be Joker who is now given up being the Joker because âhisâ Batman is gone. He recites the â2 inmates escape an asylumâ joke that he said in the Killing Joke allowing for Jason to put it together and kill him right there in front of 2 cops who are also in the diner.Immediately after you are given the choice to turn yourself in or run. The run option is the one that matters because Jason becomes Red Robin and begins his killing spree. Which Btw is just recycled footage they used in the Robin cheats death option just with the Red Robin edited over Hush. Really? Was budget that low? But what makes this ending good is that RR is later pinned down by Two Face and given the clean/scratched coin option, Jason is saved by Tim Drake (with a taser) and is reminded of Batmanâs code and its importance not only to himself but to the people of Gotham. In doing so Jason stops killing and takes Tim in as a sidekick: BatKid. Seriously, that is the name you chose? Why not have Jason be Nightwing (which he was for short while, albeit to ruin Dickâs reputation) and Tim be Robin? Batkid :Great name for a kidâs Make-A -Wish dream, not so great if you want to use it in more serious context . This is one of the better endings as Jason becomes a better person in the end and the type of hero Bruce would have wanted but at the same time shows that Jasonâs past habits were hard to get rid of especially with his father gone.
Arrest Joker has Jason become Redhood to lure Joker out in public. When he does that and unveils his true identity to him, the Joker brags about how he created him and how his rage has lead him down a murderous path, reinforcing the jokers belief of "one bad day". The next decision to be made is whether Jason should kill Joker or not. This decision ultimately has no impact as both decision lead to the same concluding decision set. I chose to kill him because let's be honestly this the path set by Jason really compliments the 2 choice options you have to make in the final one. Where Jason is confronted by Talia with a resurrected Batman who only says âZur-en-arrhâ trying to get Jason to join them but later results in a fight.
Okay there is a lot to unpack here. First: Did Grant Morrison write this? Iâm asking because of how he has written Talia during his run on Batman (and how it upsets a lot of fans). You would think Talia knowing first hand what the effects of the Lazarus pit are, would she actually risk it turning the man she loves into a husk of his former self? Yes she would want Bruce to join her on their crusade against the corruption of the modern world but not if it meant Bruce wasnât in a rational state of mind. Secondly, of all the possible Batman personas/iterations why this one?

I know they give some sort of reason near the end, but it just seemed so out of nowhere. Maybe I am looking too much into this, but if they were going to go this route, I feel like it would have been cooler to see Bruce in the Knightfall suit or have him wear a similar Batsuit that Damian wore in Batman 666.
And thirdly, you would think a fight between Jason and Bruce (where the roles are reversed, sorta) would be the most epic shit ever, but it doesnât even last a minute it ends with either Bruce getting stabbed or knocked out (depending on which you choose). Before I go with why I think letting Bruce live is the better ending, I would like to say that when Jason kills him, Bruce sets off a bomb killing all three of them and the final shot of Jasonâs corpse is very reminiscence of that comic cover of Jason caught in the explosion. I thought it was cool.
Now the reason why, I liked the save ending (and find it to be the definitive ending for this movie)  is that Jason gives up being Redhood and works with Babs, Dick and Alfred in helping Bruce gain back his sanity. This ending encompasses all that was needed for Jasonâs arc from becoming Redhood, to killing Joker, to his realization how wrong his methods were to being part of the Batfamily again and finally to save his father. It encompasses the idea that being Batman is more than just pain and suffering, its about hope and being able to become a better person, that your pain/anger doesnât define who you are/can be.
Overall, I feel that this movie is a disappointing as both a prequel/sequel to Under the Red Hood. Unless you are a huge fan of Jason Todd, wait for a sale or when they release this in a collection with their other movies. The letdown for me is that certain choices have better writing than others and supporting characters arenât used to their full potential. That being said, the idea of having different choices and giving the audience the chance to explore each of them. I hope they do this with other pivotal moments in DCâs history.
Also do the writers hate Black Mask? I get he isnât the most popular Bat-villain but damn Sionis gets the short end of the stick in every timeline especially in the first ending of Robin Cheating death, it was so ridiculous that it is borderline hilarious

we donât have to dance (to the beat of their songs)
Chapter 6 on AO3

Relationships: Â (Gen) Tim Drake & Jason Todd
Tags: Battle for the Cowl, Alternate Canon, Adopted Sibling Relationship, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Canon-Typical Violence, Mental Health Issues, Past Child Neglect, Domestic Fluff, Canon is not valid I am, and I want them to be friends goddamnit
Summary: In the middle of their battle, Jason asks Tim to leave the nest and be his Robin. Tim decides it's not a bad idea, after all.
________________________
Normalcy.
Tim doesnât quite know what that concept entails. Once, it meant taking care of himself in a big house, making sure no one knew how much time he actually spent alone. Another time, it meant solving problems, training hard and answering questions, juggling a double life. Then, leading a team of people who trusted him and whom he failed time and time again. Finally, for a brief period of time, normalcy was running against time to solve an impossible puzzle and being a triple agent.
And now⊠now he isnât sure anymore.
Itâs a sunny Saturday morning when he wakes up and squints at the window. He wonders how beaten he mustâve been to forget to close the blinds. He scratches his belly and sniffles because less than a few hours ago Ivy freaking bombed a warehouse with allergenic pollen, which was really uncool of her. She didnât even bother to give them a heads up. She did apologize and gave them an antidote before they parted ways, but⊠still. Tim wonders if it was less effective on him because⊠you know.
He lifts his shirt enough to check on the scar. Itâs healing well, in spite of everything. He doesnât bother changing out of his sleeping clothes before going upstairs. Judging by the sun outside, it canât be later than 11 am, which meansâŠ
Ah, yes. Just like he expected: normalcy now means getting out of bed late in the weekend and being greeted by the strong scent of tea, because Jason is a heathen. When Tim stumbles his way to the kitchen, he finds the now familiar sight of Jason in his favorite green hoodie, a mug of tea in his hand, and his nose buried in a heavy looking novel.
âMorning,â Tim mumbles, already searching the cabinets for coffee.
âFood,â Jason orders in lieu of a greeting.
Tim mouths the word food while pulling a face, but obediently grabs a piece of toast from the table. Bickering with Jason over mundane things is part of his routine now, but there are certain things the older boy is absolutely inflexible about. Part of normalcy now means knowing Jason will leave food for Tim and fighting him on whether he wants to eat is pointless. Tim bites into the toast as he prepares his coffee.
âIvyâs thing worked for you?â Jason asks without raising his gaze from his book.
âHm-hum,â Tim nods. Heâs still sniffling, but itâs true that he felt instantaneous relief when he swallowed the antidote last night. âYou good too?â
âYeah. Still, I canât believe you just took it when she handed it to you,â Jason puts down his book and glares at Tim.
Tim sits on the counter and shrugs. âIf she wanted to kill us, she couldâve left us coughing our lungs out like the rest of the guys in the warehouse.â
âYou have trust issues in the most fucked up way, kid.â
âHey, I happen to trust people who deserve trust,â Tim protests. âItâs not like I would take something from the Penguin. Ivy is pretty chill if youâre not littering or dumping waste in rivers.â
âYou have a crush on her or something?â Jason teases.
Tim rolls his eyes but focuses on chewing his toast rather than giving him an answer. Jason takes that as he wants, and snickers, like the idiot he is.
This is normalcy now. Having breakfast in the old kitchen and talking about mundane crap - or at least mundane for them - and it feels⊠Odd. Tim canât quite explain it. It isnât like eating alone in Drake manor. It isnât like making a mess in Titans Tower - the closest place he ever had to a home - because even there he felt like he had to set an example somehow, to keep everyone in check. It isnât like awkwardly joining Alfred in the morning, still feeling like Bruce only thought he had to adopt him considering the circumstances.
All in all, this new normalcy doesnât feel like any Tim had felt before. He doesnât dislike it.
âIâm probably going to finish the adjustments to your computer system today,â Tim informs him. âI canât believe weâre finally leaving the stone age.â
âShut up,â Jason tosses another piece of toast at him. âAlso you can stop calling it mine. I hate it and I donât know how to use it after everything you did to it. The computer is all yours.â
Tim catches the toast and grins around his first bite. âOoh, look at me, Iâm Red Hood, Iâm tough and scary, but technology is cursed, Alan Turing was a witch-â
Jason stands. Tim is sure heâs about to either mess up his hair or put Tim in a headlock until he begs for forgiveness, even though he can see the hint of a smile twisting Jasonâs lips upwards. Before a wrestling match starts, however, Jason freezes.
âDo you hear that?â he whispers.
Tim listens. He can hear nothing other than distant sirens. Burnley isnât one of the worst districts in Gotham, but theyâre too close to Crime Alley. These streets donât get a lot of traffic. Not this early in the day, anyway.
Rather than explaining himself, Jason visibly shifts into Red Hood: his shoulders square up and he sets his jaw in a challenging scowl.
âSomeone just parked on our driveway.â
Timâs eyes widen. Could it be that theyâve been found out already? He made sure that the henchmen they got were too distracted by Ivy to notice them, but perhaps he had missed something. Part of him wants to go upstairs and grab his staff - even if that would be a stupid thing to do because he canât exactly fight Dick into forgetting he lied to him.
Tim follows Jason to the entrance as he is, in his stupid oversized Superboy sweater and with toast crumbles all over his pants. He hadnât even had his coffee. He peeks through the boards on the window and his stomach drops.
âIt isnât Dick,â he says. âItâs worse.â
Jason reads the worry in Timâs eyes and lets out a curse. Technically, all the doors to the house are sealed. The only entrance is a block away and it leads to the basement/Red Hood bunker. Jason, however, seems to forget that and grabs the door handle angrily. Tim cringes when he hears the sound of frail wood being ripped because it means Jasonâs strength is out of control - which means heâs getting near pit rage.
âHow the fuck did you find us?â he barks from the porch.
Barbara Gordon is still adjusting herself in her wheelchair. The icy glare she gives Jason shows that she isnât impressed by his fury.
Foreseeing disaster, Tim rushes out to put himself between Jason and Barbara. âItâs fine, let me talk to her!â
Jason glares at him. Although thereâs a prominent vein pulsing on his brow and thereâs definitely a hint of green in his eyes, he grits his teeth and stops. Tim sighs in relief before turning to Babs:
âDamian saw us, didnât he?â he asks.
âWhat the hell does the brat have to do with this?â Jason hisses.
âLogic,â Tim shrugs. âIâve been taking care of our digital trail. If Babs knows about us, it means one of the heroes under her watch saw us. Cass is in Hong Kong. Steph and Dick wouldâve confronted us right away. The only option left is Damian.â
Jason groans and his eyes have mostly returned to their usual shade of brown. Tim had somehow annoyed him into calming down, which is a skill heâs getting better at every day. Tim smiles a little.
âWell,â Barbara says, her voice sharp. âYou thought no one was going to notice two extra vigilantes running around?â
âNot forever, no,â Tim admits, trying to sound apologetic. "We wanted to be left on our own for as long as we could, though. We donât need external interference.â
At that, Barbara looks scandalized. âAbsolutely wrong. Get me a freaking ramp or get down here, Timothy, Iâm going to beat the crap out of you.â
Jason lets out an annoyed huff, to which Tim glares at him. He has no business getting mad at Barbara for threatening them when he promises to beat Tim up at least three times a day. Five, if itâs not a school day.
âWhy donât we postpone the violence,â Tim suggests, his eyes not leaving Jasonâs, âand just⊠have a chat? Inside? Jason just made tea.â
An annoyed grunt is all the response Jason gives him before making his way back inside. Â He doesnât slam the door behind him, which is as good as a yes. Tim rolls his eyes before climbing down the steps to help Barbara up the porch.
âBy the way, how did you find our address?â he asks.
âTim, please,â she huffs. âAfter I saw the footage from Damianâs bodycam, all I had to do was track your online footprint. You think I couldnât notice the upgrades youâve been making?â
Thatâs fair, and Tim shouldâve predicted that possibility. Granted, if no one had seen them, Barbara wouldnât know there was something to track.
He pushes her wheelchair to the living room where Jason is waiting for them. The older boy is sitting on their crappy couch with his knees spread out and his fingers steepled. It wouldâve been an impressive crime lord pose to welcome someone if his green hoodie wasnât sprinkled with toast crumbs.
Not that Barbara is that easy to intimidate.
âSo what the hell happened?â She demands. âYou left that night and went to meet the guy that almost killed you and two of your brothers?â
That stings. Barbara wasnât there that night. Tim wonders if things wouldâve been any different if she had been. Would she have listened to his theory or just called him crazy as Dick and Cassie had?
Well. All in all, he knew Barbara would always be there for Dick first. He never blamed her for that, because her partnership with Dick was far deeper than any impact Tim couldâve made in her life. He takes a seat by Jasonâs side, farther from her.
âDamian also tried to kill me,â Tim reminds her. âAnd Dick fired me right after Jason offered me a job. Between the attempted murder and no job, and the same but with a gig...â
She takes off her glasses and pinches the bridge of her nose.
âThat freaking idiot,â she mutters to herself. Then, raising her gaze to meet Timâs: âHe didnât mean to fire you.â
Tim clenches his teeth. âIt sure seemed like it when I woke up and saw Damian wearing my old costume,â he snaps.
He feels Jason whipping his head towards him, and he curses himself. He had never revealed the gritty details of his dismissal for a reason. He reminds himself that Dick gave him Robin and it was his right to take it away, he has no reason to be this angry. That only serves to make him more bitter, though.
âIâm not saying Dick wasnât stupid,â Barbara continues, her brow furrowing. âI already had some words with him about it. It doesnât mean it was okay for you to just vanish for months, Tim. And then youâre back and you donât talk to anyone. Not even Steph? Me?â
âOh, fuck right off,â Jason snaps.
Barbara goes stiff. Tim groans, because now he has to push his anger further away to be able to stop the two of them. Before he can say anything, Jason continues:
âYouâre talking as if I fucking kidnapped him. You know damn well how capable he is,â he barks. âThe kid made a choice. I swear to fuck, everyoneâs a criticâŠâ
Barbara opens her mouth but closes it again without saying anything. She presses her lips into a tight line. It isnât often you see Oracle at a loss for words. For the first time, she looks at Jason without any animosity, her thoughts bare in her eyes. Unlike the boys, Barbara doesnât play games. She doesnât hide her emotions on purpose. The longing in her eyes is almost palpable, as though sheâs seeing a dear relative she lost a long time ago, and she canât reach them.
âWhat are you two thinking?â She asks. âWhat are you doing?â
âWhat we do best,â Tim says simply. âVigilante work.â
âYou told Dick you retired,â Barbara points out. âThen you ghosted him. He keeps waiting for you to come back.â
âHe likes to do that,â Jason says. Now his voice is barely a whisper. âHe says heâll be there if you need him. Who says we need him, though?â
Barbara hesitates. âI told⊠Never mind. Just⊠Iâm glad youâre back, Tim. And Iâm glad youâre not dead again, Jason.â
Tim smiles. Jason looks like he wants to glance around to make sure sheâs not talking to someone else. When it becomes clear she isnât, he somehow looks even more uncomfortable.
âSo,â he starts. âWhat now?â
âWe fight for Timâs custody, obviously,â Barbara smiles.
The peaceful moment ends when Tim and Jason start protesting out loud over one another. Barbara giggles at the cacophony of half-words, something along the lines of fuck off, not a child get your own damn kid responsible for myself-
âIâm joking!â She shouts to be heard over their complaints. âJesus, you boys get riled up so easily.â
âIâm not a boy,â Tim and Jason say at the same time.
They glare at each other. Barbara rolls her eyes.
âNow,â she continues as though they didnât interrupt her, âlet me see your work, Tim. Iâm going to give you guys a free upgrade.â
âLike hell you are,â Jason says. âHow do we know youâre not spying on us for Dick?â
She arches an eyebrow. âFunny. I thought you two were fighting rogues, not Batman. Why would Dick want to spy on you?â
âBecause heâs a meddler and he doesnât trust me,â Jason states as though itâs a fact.
âTo be fair, you did try to kill Tim. And Damian. And Dick,â she retorts. Before Jason can say anything back, she raises a hand to ask for patience. âIt doesnât matter to me, though. Barbara Gordon is Dick Graysonâs best friend and partner. Oracle, however, is an ally to anyone trying to protect Gotham. Iâll help you two like I help Batman, the Birds of Prey, and even Batgirl.â
Jason frowns. âI thought Cassandra was in Hong Kong.â
âWell,â Tim scratches his own nape, feeling suddenly guilty. âActually⊠there might be a new Batgirl in town.â
âWhat?â
âI wasnât trying to hide it!â Tim says. âI swear it just slipped my mind with everything else I had to report!â
Jason looks like he wants to grab a cushion and smother Tim to death. Before he can do as much, Barbara clears her throat loudly and says:
âAnyway⊠Support. I donât talk about the vigilantes under my watch. Not to Batgirl. Not to Batman.â
Jason crosses his arms and leans back against the couch, his brow furrowed. Tim fights the urge to pat away the crumbs from his hoodie and waits patiently. Technically, this is Jasonâs operation and heâs the one calling the shots. Tim has his own opinions, but in the end, a sidekick is supposed to follow orders.
Then Jason turns to Tim. âReplacement?â
He⊠does he want Timâs opinion?
âI trust Barbara,â Tim says without hesitation. âAnd having Oracleâs help is going to be a game-changer.â
Jason considers that for a moment. Itâs clear that he isnât happy about the conclusions heâs drawing but, in the end, he sighs in defeat.
âFine,â Jason says. âBut if you tattle about what weâre doing, youâre gonna regret it.â
âWhy, gee, Jason, how kind of you to allow me to help you guys,â Barbara snaps.
The two of them start bickering, but Tim tunes them out for a moment. It isnât like Bruce and Dick never asked him for his opinion. They did. A lot. He simply hadnât expected Jason to do the same. And so openly too. Bruce liked to pretend Timâs input was but a piece to a puzzle he was assembling by himself. It seems like Jason isnât above taking Timâs words at face value and explicitly showing that he was part of the decision making.
Itâs⊠nice. Not quite like being a sidekick, but not like having a whole team depending on him alone. Tim decides he likes this.
âAlright, alright, enough,â he says, standing up. âCome on, Babs, let me show you our office. Do you want some tea?â
âAnything but Earl Grey,â she says, allowing Tim to push her wheelchair towards the kitchen. âDonât tell Alfred.â
âWha⊠Does that make me the cook?â Jason complains.
Tim gives him a pointed look. âDo you wanna help her with the computer instead?â
Jason starts grumbling and cursing under his breath, but he still starts looking for something in the cupboards.
Unlike the Batcave, the secret entrance to the basement isnât very fancy: just a couple of tiles that can be removed and a ladder. Tim helps Barbara out of her chair and she climbs down on her own. He has to admire her core strength. A little juggling with the folded chair later, he joins her and helps her to the seat again.
As soon as sheâs comfortable, rather than rolling straight to the computer, she wraps her arms around Tim a little tighter. Surprised, but not much, he hugs her back.
âI missed you,â she whispers. âIâm so, so glad youâre back.â
Tim squeezes her. He always loved Barbaraâs hugs. He doesnât say anything, though, because he doesnât think he can. Thereâs a knot in his throat stopping any sound from coming out. He tightens the embrace a little more and hopes she knows what he means without him needing to say anything.
Barbara pulls back first, her expression somber. âJason looks better.â
âHe is,â Tim assures.
âStill⊠I hope you know what youâre doing.â
âI do,â Tim says and thereâs not a hint of doubt in his voice. âI⊠I guess I understand why he did what he did. And Jason is a hero too, Babs. I didnât forget that, even if some of you did.â
She presses her lips into a tight line and at first, Tim thinks itâs due to the implied accusation. Then something clicks, and he thinks it mustâve been because he referred to the Batfamily as âsome of youâ. For a while, he refused to think of himself as an outsider - he was Timothy Wayne after all - but, at some point, it seems like he started accepting he might not be one of them anymore. It still stings.
However, he also realizes he can live with that. Maybe itâs because of how easy itâd been to get used to Jason, to this new normalcy that feels truly normal after so little time. Tim may have left, but it isnât Red Robin and them. Itâs us and them. And, if everything goes according to his plans, theyâre soon going to be at least on the same side.
For now, itâs enough.
There was a time in Timâs life when he didnât mind making small talk. His mother drilled into his head that he was supposed to be pleasant and polite and that thereâd be consequences if he embarrassed his father in front of his associates. Timothy could lose a whole week of his allowance for chewing with his mouth open during a business dinner. It was more about the inconvenience of being scolded than the punishment, really, but Tim learned pretty fast that being sociable and polite was easier.
Itâs been a long time, though. Timâs lost his touch. Or so it feels when heâs unable to shake off one of his annoying classmates.
â...and then you could totally join us this weekend for the tennis tournament,â she says.
Tim refrains from sighing. He thought all of his classmates had been warned not to mingle with that Drake kid. Even if he was Bruce Wayneâs newest charity case, he slept through most of the classes and talked back to the teachers. Unfortunately, Laney Gonzalez didnât get the memo.
âI donât think I should,â Tim says tiredly. âIâm not great at any sports, really.â
âPff, like Iâd believe you!â Laney chuckles and latches onto his arm, squeezing his biceps. âYou think we canât tell how muscular you are under this hideous uniform?â
For fuckâs sake. âNo, really,â he tries again, gently prying his arm away with an awkward chuckle. âIâm not good at that sort of thing.â
Go to school, Tim, Jason said. You need an education, Tim. Why doesnât Jason get an education? Then he could hang back after class, even though there are better things to do because Laney freaking Gonzalez decided it was a good idea to make friends with the weird kid. Timâs attempts to reach the gates seem to go unnoticed by the girl.
âCome on, Tim,â she insists. âYou never join us when we do class stuff. Itâll be fun. You donât have to play or anything, just⊠hang out a bit?â
What is a polite way to say Iâd rather get into a fistfight with Killer Croc , Tim wonders?
Heâs about to make up a family emergency - is she going to notice that his phone didnât buzz at all? - when he notices a small commotion near the exit. A group of students is eyeing the street curiously, and even the ones leaving are taking another glance at⊠something. Worried, he lets Laneyâs speech about friendships in high school fly over his head, and he moves a bit faster. If something big happened while he was in history class, heâs going to freaking killâŠ
Jason.
Tim stops dead on his tracks because the thing his fellow schoolmates keep glancing at is none other than Jason Todd himself in all of his glory. Heâs leaning against the biggest motorcycle Tim had ever seen and wearing his favorite black leather jacket. Tim is already considering the fastest way to kill himself even before Jasonâs face splits into a wicked grin and he opens his arms.
âTimbers! Fancy seeing you here!â He says, no , shouts.
Kids in and out of the schoolyard follow Jasonâs gaze and find Tim burying his face in his hands.
âUhâŠâ Laney is now keeping her distance for once. âYou know him?â
Tim is already stomping towards Jason.
âWhat are you doing here?â He hisses.
Still smiling, Jason hands him a yellow helmet. âPicking you up. Not happy to see me?â
âWhat if Dick sees you?â Tim protests.
Behind him, someone gasps. Tim turns around and curses when he realizes Laney followed him and thought it was okay to listen to a private conversation.
âIâm so sorry,â she says. âI shouldâve noticed it! For the record, I wasnât hitting on you, if thatâs why you kept refusing. I really just want to be friends.â
Jason looks vaguely amused.
Tim frowns. âWhat?â
âThatâs your boyfriend, I assume?â
âNo!â Tim hears himself shouting. âHeâs my brother!â
Laney has dark skin, but Tim still notices the way her cheeks go a shade darker. âOh gosh, is that right? Iâm so sorry! I didnât know you had any brothers other than Dick and Damian!â
Tim wants to die so bad.
âActually,â Jason says, voice soft, dropping an arm around Timâs shoulders, âIâm a bit of a family secret, so donât go tweeting Vicki Vale about it, will you? Weâll know if you babble.â
Scratch that. He doesnât want to die. He wants to kill Jason.
Laney nods hurriedly and makes a hushed promise to keep the secret. She mumbles something about texting Tim later - Tim is sure that she doesnât have his number - and half-jogs away from them, her ponytail bobbing behind her. Well, that takes care of that. Laney Gonzalez is probably never going to speak to him again.
He turns around and punches Jasonâs arm. âWhat the fuck was that?â
âI have a lead on that case from last night,â Jason hops on the bike. âGet on, loser, weâre going crime fighting.â
âWe had a plan. You think Dick wonât notice youâre picking me up from school?â Tim complains. Heâs already climbing the bike behind Jason, though.
âTim, what did I tell you about plans again?â
Tim sighs as he puts the helmet on. He rests his forehead against Jasonâs back as though he doesnât even have the strength to sit up straight anymore. Make a plan. The plan goes wrong. Throw it away.
âBesides, Barbara knows. The Gremlin knows. Itâs just a matter of time before we have Bitchard and Brat Girl on our asses.â
He starts the bike before Tim is ready, but Tim makes a point of looping his arms around his waist and swallowing a startled yelp when they go from zero to very fast.
It isnât until theyâre several blocks away from Gotham Academy that Tim fully understands what heâd just done. He told a random classmate he had an extra brother. He told her Jason was his brother. He briefly considers letting go of Jasonâs waist and letting himself fall into the asphalt.
âShit,â he mutters to himself. âIâm sorry.â
Jason eyes back briefly before turning his attention back to the street. Between the helmet and the speed, Tim didnât catch even a glance of his expression, but he can picture it just fine. Itâs been barely three weeks since they started living together, but this is normal for him now. He knows Jasonâs mildly intrigued face just as well as his own.
âFor what?â Jason asks.
âFor saying youâre my brother. I panicked.â
Again, he remembers the early days at Wayne manor. Bruce had sworn off adoptions and Tim could only stay after he promised that wouldnât be an issue.  Hell, Tim tried to keep his word even after his dad died, and yetâŠ
Jason mumbles something that gets lost over the wind.
âWhat?â
âI said whatever, man!â Jason snaps. âI donât think adoption expires after death. Technically we are brothers.â
Tim doesnât say anything. He should know better than to keep making the same mistake.
But isnât going after Jason a recurrent mistake in itself anyway?
âItâs better like this, to be honest,â Jason says. âItâd be weird to be living with a random minor, I guess.â
Itâs basically an automatic response at this point: âYouâre two years older than me.â
âIâm legally an adult. Youâre not,â Jason reminds him.
âYouâre legally dead, actually,â Tim points.
Jason barks out a burst of laughter. âLook at you, Timmy, saying such mean things. Am I a bad influence on you?â
âNow, that tone is creepy. Drop it or Iâll make us crash. You know I have no regard for my own safety.â
Tim is definitely doing that talking without thinking thing again.
âUgh, donât I know it,â Jason groans. âShouldâve considered that before taking a fucking kamikaze as my partner.â
Tim perks up. âHeyâŠ!â
âYouâre not allowed to name yourself Kamikaze,â Jason cuts him off. âFirst, that would probably be racist, and second, because youâre not naming yourself after suicidal pilots. You chose Red Robin. No takesie backsies.â
âFine, mom,â Tim pouts.
Jason speeds up and Tim takes that as his cue to pretend the purr of the engine is too loud for them to talk.
For once in his life, Tim decides to really throw the plan away and see where this goes. This is just his new routine and Tim is nothing if not adaptable.
The case should be simple enough: someone had destroyed an underground casino and killed the bosses responsible for keeping the place running. All of the workers had been spared. They would consider it an everyday case if the same thing hadnât happened again somewhere near the Narrows. The two places didnât have anything in common other than the business they ran - gambling, prostitution⊠the works.
Tim spent hours thinking of a personal motive and so far he had discarded personal vendetta and random coincidence. The methods didnât match one of the rogues they knew and, although he didnât say it out loud, Tim feared they had another Red Hood like vigilante in their hands.
When Red Hood and Red Robin come out that night, theyâre following one of Hoodâs hunches.
âI still think I couldâve done this alone,â Red mumbles.
âI still think I couldâve done this alone,â Hood mocks in a high-pitched voice.
Red Robin glares at him and, even in the dirty dark alley, Hood doesnât miss it. He sighs.
âDo you trust Oracle or not?â He sighs.
âOf course I do,â the boy mumbles. âStill, it would be more efficientâŠâ
âTo split up and have each of us cover a place. Weâve been over this. Oracle said sheâd make sure the other place is closed for the night. If Iâm right - and I usually am - our guy is gonna attack here.â
Red rolls his eyes but decides not to argue any further. Heâs pretty sure this is punishment for forcing Hood to accept Oracleâs help, by keeping him close and refusing to let him do part of the job alone. Alas. Let Hood be petty for now. Heâll learn soon enough that having Oracle backing you up is too good of an opportunity to pass up.
However, now that he thinks about it, Red Robin hasnât done anything big alone since his debut. Patrolling and stopping random muggins is one thing, but the attack on Black Maskâs warehouses? The bust of the big drug traffic operation at the harbor? This odd murder case? In all of these high profile cases, Hood demanded that he and Red Robin attacked together.
He makes a mental note to think about the possible meaning of that later. Right now he has to focus on finding suspicious activity, which is surprisingly hard. Once theyâre at the strategic point Red Robin picked and getting set for the stakeout, Hood seems to have similar thoughts, because he comments:
âItâs like looking for a needle in a haystack, huh?â
Red sighs. âWeâre not breaking into their office. We canât risk spooking the murderer.â
The older boy shrugs and they settle down to wait.
This is a part of the job Red Robin was oddly fond of. Thereâs something about just sitting on a roof and waiting that is calming to him. He loved the adventure and solving mysteries and fighting bad guys and the thrill. That being said, there was something satisfying about taking your time and waiting to act. Just them too high up to be seen, the only witnesses being the cold night air and the certainty that theyâre doing something good and saving innocents.
Tim wondered if it was fucked up of him to love this so much. Heâs been in contact with the ugliest parts of humanity since he was a little boy, after all. After Cissie retired, he thought about it a lot. Like Cissie, he didnât have special powers. He was just another boy that got himself into a crazy situation. Why couldnât he be just another civilian, unaware of Gothamâs nightlife? Enjoy school, as Jason wanted him to? Live a long life, maybe die of old age?
Tim likes to think that the fact that he loves this so much means that he was made for this life.
âWhat do you think weâre facing tonight?â He asks.
Red Hood starts talking and Red Robin listens to him. Unlike Tim, Jason is all about instinct and passion. Whereas Tim collects clues and puts together theories, Jason understands the reasoning behind them and comes up with hunches that Tim couldnât dream of. Red Robin loves to hear his hypothesis because itâs almost like having a book read out loud to you, and an enjoyable one at that.
Heâs almost satisfied, all things considered.
Hood suddenly stops talking. As fast as lightning, he reaches into his holster and, before Red Robin even thinks of stopping him, Red Hood stands and points his gun at something - no, someone - right behind them. He pulls the trigger.
Red Robin opens his mouth in horror, but, rather than a lifeless body dropping to the ground he watches the invader dodge the bullet as though itâs nothing, almost gracefully. He reaches for his staff, but the invader is already running towards them again and Hood is getting about to take another shot. The invaderâs cape flies behind them, dropping from their head and revealing... a familiar face.
Hoodâs finger is already on the trigger and Red realizes this time sheâll have no time to dodge. Without thinking twice, he jumps between Red Hood and the woman.
â TIMOTHY !â Hood barks, pointing the gun upwards.
âI know her!â Red Robin shouts at one of them. Maybe at both of them. âI know her! Sheâs my friend!â
The womanâs stopped as well. Sheâs looking at them with her head tilted to the side. Without minding Hood behind him, Red Robin faces her and takes in her appearance. Sheâs still bald. Still rocking all the scars - maybe she even has new ones? - and sheâs still dressed like a grunge-rock singer from the late 90âs. Heâd recognize her anywhere.
âPru?â He confirms. âPrudence Wood?â
Her shoulders relax when she hears his voice. She reaches for something in her pocket - Hood gets tense again behind him - but all she grabs is a piece of paper. Itâs crumpled and a bit dirty, as though sheâs been walking around with it in her pocket for a while.
Without hesitation, Red takes it from her unresisting fingers and reads the words someone - presumably Pru herself - had hurriedly scribbled:
I knew this would get your attention, the paper says, Iâm here to warn you. The Head of the Demon is coming after you.
And, just like that, Timâs frail normalcy is gone.

Chapter 8 - Absence
Pairing: Jason Todd/Reader
Word Count: 3,128 words
TW: Violence and Gore.
A/N:Â Hi guys!! Sorry for the super long wait! I've had writers block for the longest time and also life gets in the way, as usual. This one's a short one, sort of a transition into the next chapter- which will definitely be more intense! Thanks for being so patient with me as usual.Â
Read the previous chapters of Red Who? here: Masterlist
Normal people would probably compare what you felt to some time when they were a kid, where one of their parents surprised them with some sort of wish they always had. A trip to Disneyland or that red bicycle theyâve always wanted.
Or maybe to a time where some crush said they liked them back after a confession, or even being offered a cookie by a new friend.
Whatever it was, those were everyone elseâs comparison.
You didnât have any great childhood memories to refer to the feeling you felt right now. But the closest would be the first time Bruce ever said âGood jobâ to you.
Your first kiss wasnât all that you expected it to be. To be fair, you didnât really expect much from a first kiss. To you, it was all unnecessary distraction from the things that mattered.
But Jason didnât make you feel that way. He made you feel giddy and excited, he made you feel like you were being pulled upwards by a whole bunch of colorful helium balloons.
But then you walked inside the manor, changed into your Robin uniform, and started to approach Bruce who was at the Bat computer.
âWhat are you doing?â he scrutinized you.
âIâm ready to go?â you hesitated, before mentally slapping yourself. You suddenly remembered your fall out yesterday, bursting your bubble of joy before. He was still mad at you. Of course he was, you hadnât done anything to fix it.
Yet you felt like you didnât need to apologize.
âYouâre not going anywhere,â he gave you a cold look that made you feel like shrinking, âYou disobeyed a direct order last night. I canât just ignore it.â
âI went with my instinct, Bruce,â you tried to reason with him, âYou always said to-â
âNo, you went because you are fixated on him,â Bruce cut you off and glared at you. A look youâve never been on the receiving end of.
âWhat? What are you talking about?â you sputtered, taken aback by his remark.
âI donât know why, but youâre fixated on the Red Hood,â he continued, âYou went and disobeyed me because you wanted to see him.â
âDonât be ridiculous, Bruce,â you retorted, straightening your back into a cold stance, âYouâre talking as if I have a crush on him.â
âDo you?â he demanded, âI know for a fact that you hide things from me regarding your encounters with him.â
âHow dare you assume that of me, Bruce,â you coldly replied, despite the nervousness of getting caught. You needed to shift the blame to him somehow.
âThen why?â he urged, âYou have never before disobeyed me. Why do you always get excited when heâs involved?â
âI get excited because itâs exciting!â you argued, âHeâs a new criminal who came out of nowhere, taking over the underground in the span of a couple of weeks! Who wouldnât be?â
âDo you know who he is?â Bruce suddenly asked.
âNo. Thatâs what Iâve been asking you, remember? How dare you accuse me of hiding things from you when youâre the one who refuses to trust me enough to tell me who he is,â you ranted, finding a way to finally shift the blame on him to reduce your own faults.
âI donât-â
âDonât lie to me, Bruce. A guy who randomly appears and fucks shit up, knows everything about the both of us, our identities probably included- donât tell me you out of all people havenât figured it out. So why havenât you told me?â
âBecause I donât want to believe it myself!â he yelled, making you jump slightly at the sudden change in volume.
You stared at him for a few moments, before saying, âWho is he, Bruce?â
He clenched his jaw.
âDo you want to patrol or not?â
âYes,â you stated.
âFine,â he sighed, turning away from you, âBut you stick by me the whole time. If he happens to appear, you stay in the Bat-mobile.â
âBut-â
âDo you want me to put you under house arrest?â
âFine,â you admitted defeat.
***
You honestly thought the decapitated heads on spikes were the worst youâve seen, and that the next bad thing would wait at least more than a week before it threw itself at you.
But there you were, mouth slack in shock at the scene before you.
It was a bright night in Robinson Park, coincidentally where you were earlier, the moon was full and there were no clouds blocking its gentle light. The additional lights that the GCPD brought also gave plenty of illumination that fell onto the three bodies hanging on tree branches.
All male, all naked, all hanged by the neck with a rope. Purple faced and tongues lolling out, you were thankful for taking Dickâs advice by expecting the worst. Yet, it still shocked you.
Because if it were just three people hanged by the neck, you wouldnât have batted an eye. But this time, there were three people hanged by the neck, their bellies slashed open horizontally, intestines spilling out and trailed all over the well kept grass like large alien worms bursting out.
And along with the gruesome scene, of course, came the smell. It wasnât just the metallic smell of blood this time. It was closer to the smell at the club the first time you met Red Hood. A mix of blood and feces and urine. Thankfully, it was outdoors with plenty of ventilation.
âBatman,â Gordon huffed when he saw the two of you approaching. Batman rushed to arrive to the scene when he heard the traffic on the police radio. The crime scene was already taped off, forensics were everywhere, flashing lights from their cameras as they took pictures of the bodies.
As you got closer, you could see in detail how the bodies looked like. The gashes were clean, you could see the layers of skin, fat, and muscle that made up the cross section of the gash. Hell, you could even see the bits of fascia and peritoneum that were damaged by the trauma.
âBlack Maskâs men,â Batman pointed out without hesitation.
âYeah,â Gordon sighed, âLike I said before, gang war. Red Hood himself must have done this. Looks like weâve got another sadistic bastard running around. This was done to them while they were alive.â
You grimaced.
âWhat we think is rope fibres were found underneath the nails, so they were struggling and scratching at it to escape before they got strangled to death,â Gordon continued, âWe still gotta wait for forensics, but I bet my money the coronerâs report is going to confirm it. He must have had them stand on the park table here, tied the noose around their necks, gutted them, and then pushed them down. The momentum from the fall must have forced the intestines to spill like this.â
You had to hand it to Red Hood, he was very theatrical. If you werenât so disgusted by his lack of empathy, you would have perhaps thought that his works were art.
âHow do you know it was him?â you voiced out.
âThere isnât anyone else that have the guts to directly attack Black Mask,â Gordon explained, âI donât think these would be the last bodies we find.â
True enough, the week after that, another two bodies were found in a similar state, but this time, you noticed the nail of one of the menâs pinky fingers were pulled out. A piece of information that you didnât know you stored at the back of your mind came to resurface.
When it came to torture for information by denailing, if the victim could handle getting one nail pulled out without breaking, they most probably could handle it all. The strongest ones are the ones with all their nails pulled out- which meant that they probably did not reveal anything.
Judging from the body before you, you guessed that Red Hood probably got whatever information he was looking for.
And if he did, why did he have to kill them both in such a way?
Truly, you couldnât comprehend his love for cruelty.
You stuck with Batman on the days you patrolled, as per his orders. You werenât allowed to go on your own anymore until you gained his trust again. Not that it mattered, because even though you were investigating a string of Red Hoodâs bloody murders- he was on his twenty-third victim by then- you didnât get to meet the culprit himself.
He was keeping to the shadows, yet making his presence still loud and clear by leaving bodies everywhere.
You didnât want to admit your disappointment.
Red Hood wasnât the only one leaving bodies, though. Black Mask also was under investigation for retaliating by attacking and murdering Moehlerâs men, though less creatively and dramatic.
Before you realised it, Gotham City was in the midst of a gang war that Gordon had predicted those weeks ago.
After a particularly exhausting patrol on a Saturday night involving yet another one of Red Hoodâs victims, you laid on your bed, and stared at the ceiling. You glanced at your phone- no notifications.
It had been approximately 3 weeks since your kiss with Jason, and it was the last time you saw him. He had been texting you less and less, despite it all. The last message you sent him a week ago read was just a GIF of a Shiba Inuâs backside while it walked. You didnât want to seem desperate.
You probably scared him off. I told you so, Mother said.
You pushed her away like you always did.
You tried to not overthink it. Perhaps he was busy with getting into the police force, perhaps he didnât feel like talking to anyone, because God knows even you have long periods of time where you wanted to just shut out the world.
You tried to be understanding and patient.
But you still couldnât help but think about him. His smooth voice, how sexy he sounded when he swore. His grunts and moans of pleasure over the phone. And his lips. How they felt against yours, how they would feel in between your legs. You always noticed his smell too.
His cologne, fabric softener, the smell of leather and⊠fireworks. You didnât know why. But his smell reminded you of fireworks.
But you were restless. And Jason wasnât the only one that was on your mind.
You hadnât seen Red Hood for about as long, too. It irritated you. For some reason Red Hood felt like an itch on your back that you just couldnât reach far enough to scratch. As the nights went by without hearing from Jason, you strangely thought of Red Hood more.
Especially at night when you were alone in bed.
You wondered about him. Some reasonable, some completely random. Where was he from? Did he have siblings? Does he play music inside that helmet of his? He looked like the heavy metal type, but you entertained the idea of him humming along to Taylor Swift while he gutted men.
What was wrong with you? You were unintentionally humanising him, giving him more meaning and sentimentality than he deserved.
But most importantly, you had a feeling that he was preparing for something, in addition to the gang war he started. You didnât have any evidence. It was just your gut. And you trusted your gut, no matter what Bruce said.
Shit.
You started to think that Bruce was right. You felt like you were beginning to be obsessed with him. You groaned into your pillow before trying your best to fall asleep and not think about Red Hoodâs flexing biceps.
***
The familiar lurch of the batmobile going from stationary to full speed never failed to excite you to your core.
Both you and Batman were on your usual patrol in Otisburg District, before hearing a large explosion just a few blocks away. He frequented the district a lot, since The Stacked Deck was overtaken by Red Hood, it made sense to patrol in the area.
You wanted to patrol in the area. It meant the chances of meeting him was higher. Not that it mattered, because Batman was still keeping you on a tight leash.
What you didnât expect, though, was to see the club itself engulfed in flames.
You hacked a cough the moment you exited the batmobile, the soot and smoke enveloping the area in heavy clouds. People were running in the opposite direction, away from the building. If there was anyone inside the club, it was too late to save them now. The alcohol must have contributed to the rapid burning, and somewhere along, a gas pipe must have burst, because the roof and part of the outer walls were in ruins already from the explosion you heard before.
The fire department came. You saw the familiar face from all those weeks ago. Parks, was it? The cute one. You saw him order his men around and climbed onto the lift with a hose. You overheard someone say it was going to take them more than just a couple of hours to extinguish the fire.
âYeah, yeah, Iâm already here,â you heard a voice behind you, âYes, sir. No, sir. With all due respect Mr. Mayor, you donât just stop a gang war- understood, sir.â
You turned around and saw a very distressed Commissioner walking towards the two of you. He was on the phone, his other hand pressing at his temples.
âUnderstood sir,â he huffed, ending the call, âBatman.â
âCommissioner,â Batman nodded.
âOf course you got here first,â he sighed, âIâve already told my people to pull up the traffic cameras and every other CCTV nearby- which you probably already have access to. Whatever it is, I put my money that Black Mask did this.â
âOf course it is,â you rolled your eyes, not that Gordon could see them behind your white lenses.
âOh, I also have another update,â Gordon suddenly remembered, âRegarding the Gotham University Public Library case. According to the two we caught, there is a third. He managed to get away. Jerome Miller, 8 cases of arson, 11 attempted arson, 2 theft- but I guess itâs below your paygrade, Batman. Hey, do you even get paid?â
âWhere is he now?â you interrupted, feeling your blood boil at the mention of one of the people who burned down your safe haven.
âWe put an APB on him. Heâll turn up eventually. But we have bigger things to deal with now,â Gordon explained, âRed Hood will retaliate. And soon. God have mercy on whoever he gets his hands on next.â
*** It was hard to wish for God to have mercy on whoever Red Hood gets his hand on next, especially since the victim this time was none other than Black Mask himself, who has killed and tortured hundreds.
But when you saw the state of Black Maskâs body, you found yourself taking back that thought.
His mask was a feet away from his body, which was still positioned in a sitting position on his leather armchair, facing the massive window of his office building which showed the city skyline. His face?
On his desk behind him.
Literally. His face was skinned messily, clumsily, and then placed on the glass desk behind him in a mound of bloody flesh. Red Hood did not take his time to skin Roman Sionisâ face off, thatâs for sure.
Sionis had his neck slashed ear to ear, his carotids and jugular sliced through.
âDid he-â you started, âDid Red Hood do this to him alive?â
âWe would need blood test results for that,â Batman said next to you, taking out a syringe to extract blood from the body. Where he kept it? You didnât ask. You didnât know he carried around a syringe and a vial to take blood.
âIf the forensics saw you,â you giggled.
âGood thing theyâre too slow,â Batman smirked.
He actually smirked.
You felt inappropriately happy, given the scene before you, but Batman had been cold to you these past few weeks. This was a step to him getting over it.
You heard people approaching.
âJesus Christ!â you heard Gordonâs muffled voice behind the door. Probably counting the 31 dead security on his way up and outside.
âLetâs go,â Batman commanded, pushing open the door right before Gordon opened it.
âBatman-â
âIâve got what I need,â he simply said and walked away, with you giving Gordon an apologetic smile and following behind him.
***
âPositive for suxamethonium chloride,â Bruce announced from the Cave computer as you walked towards him, freshly cleaned and changed.
âWhat?â you asked.
âRoman Sionisâ blood has traces of suxamethonium chloride, a neuromuscular-blocking drug,â he explained, âInduces paralysis for about ten minutes.â
âJesus,â you whispered, âRed Hood injected him with that, and then peeled his face off while he couldnât move?â
âYes.â
âAnd does this sucks- suxo-â
âSuxamethonium chloride,â Bruce helped you.
âYes, that,â you rolled your eyes, âIs it like, an anesthesia as well?â
âNo,â Bruce replied, âOnly a muscle relaxant. Itâs used to perform quick medical interventions in emergency departments. When a muscle relaxant is induced, doctors would have the patient under a ventilator, since the diaphragm is also paralysed. But Red Hood did not have a ventilator, meaning Black Mask did not only feel the pain while he was being skinned, but was also suffocating.â
âGood thing he didnât use a ventilator, though,â you shrugged, âAt least since he couldnât breathe, he would have passed out after a few minutes.â
âI see you have gotten used to his methods,â Bruce commented.
âWhat do you mean?â you frowned.
âYou used to be more surprised after learning Red Hoodâs brutal rituals,â Bruce pointed out.
Huh. He was right.
âI guess so,â you responded, âI would have had to get used to them eventually. Plus, itâs not like Black Mask was a saint, either. He deserved what he got.â
âWe are not the ones who decides who deserves what,â Bruce reminded you.
âJust saying,â you shrugged again, âIâm heading to bed. Night, Bruce.â
âHmm.â
You lied in bed that night, for the first time not thinking about how brutal Red Hood was. You just wish you could see him already. The past few weeks- for some reason you felt lonely. You felt like you were being deliberately ignored by someone you wanted attention from- while they were still flaunting their presence to you.
You missed him.
Fuck.
You finally realised that you missed the fucking asshole. Were you so bored that you were now craving the sight of a criminal?
Where was he, anyway?
You scoffed.
Right. Probably celebrating. With Black Mask gone, you just remembered- that Red Hood was now technically the ruler of the underworld.

hey so like.. if sheila really is jason's mom... why does he still say that his mom was a good person? he always talks about his horrible dad but he only ever mentions his mom's drug addiction, never the fact that she was complicit in his murder? she's highkey worse that willis, no?
So for starters (and this is actually the last thing Iâm writing in this response because below this I went on a whole rant about how much I hate Sheila and then I reread your ask and realized there might be a little confusion) when Jason mentions his mom, heâs definitely referring to Catherine. Because she is the woman he knows, the woman who âraisedâ him, the woman who was there during his childhood. Sheâs the only mother he knows. Sheila is just the egg donor who gave him life only to murder him when he finds her later.
Sheila is 100%, HIGH KEY, the absolute worst. I canât possibly overstate how much I hate Sheila. She is despicable. Because, imagine you read A Death in the Family for the first time. Maybe you know that Jason dies in the end. Maybe youâve heard on the interwebz, or 90âČs comics, that he gets himself killed, that heâs reckless and he disobeys Bruceâs orders. But you donât know the story.Â
That was me. I knew nothing about Jasonâs search for his bio-mom and Sheila when I went into that book. And maybe, like me, this is your introduction to Robin!Jason.
So it opens with Jason going half-cocked on some child pornographers and Bruce is understandably worried because Jason almost died but at the same time youâre like... child pornographers are the scum that grows on scum and Jason is a child so like... we feel where youâre coming from Robin, no big deal thatâs not really reckless, youâre just a passionate kid (because you donât know anything about Jasonâs past on the streets, hinted at in issues leading up to this one and you donât know that Jason may have a personal reason for having a grudge against sex offenders and child abuses but it doesnât really matter because, like, child pornographers!).Â
So Bruce benches Jason for dumb reasons I wonât go into (and maybe youâre not a total newb like I was, maybe youâve read a little of Jasonâs Robin run before this in Batman and Detective Comics so you think itâs pretty ooc for Bruce and Jason to not discuss things).Â
Then Jason finds his birth certificate and the name is smudged but it definitely canât be Catherineâs. So Jason does some research and since he and Bruce are still on the outs, and Bruce is busy tracking down the Joker, Jason, who has been trained as a detective and crime fighter, tracks down three possibilities for his bio-mom.Â
Skipping ahead, after they fight off Lady Shiva and ask if sheâs ever had a kid, because sheâs option #2 (option #1 was an Israeli spy and like... how did low level henchman Willis Todd end up with these deadly, badass women?) they walk away and Bruce asks Jason if he really would have wanted a woman like Shiva to be his mother and I BET THE ANSWER IS DIFFERENT NOW!
Because then they get to Sheila and I can finally say that what makes her awful is that she sells her story. Iâm reading this for the first time, and I have no idea what happens, just that somehow Jason gets from meeting his birth mother to dead in a blown up building.
And if youâre reading it like that, youâre right there with Jason. You understand why she left him, sheâs sympathetic and you feel for her and you think âThat is so sad, at least they can have a relationship nowâ.Â
So then the Joker shows up and surprise, surprise, comic book worlds are small and he and Sheila have a past.Â
Joker wants drugs and he threatens to expose Sheilaâs past doing abortions, which, in the 80âČs may have been meant to make her slightly less sympathetic but now just kind of makes her a victim of a dumb system. Anyway, one of those went bad and she accidentally killed someone and fled the country.Â
So Sheila takes Joker to the warehouse and youâre thinking, that sucks but Bruce Wayne is there and maybe he can replace the drugs Joker stole, Sheila is in a tough place.Â
Then she stands by when Joker replaces a shipment of life-saving drugs with his deadly Joker gas and you go âuh... ok... not... not really much she can do I guess...â
Jason is watching this go down, recognizes that this is too much for him, and runs off to get Bruce.
Thatâs when Bruce and Jason split up. Someone has to stop the shipment from being delivered or a bunch of people will die. Their Land Rover isnât fast enough to catch the cargo trucks and all they have is a one-man, fold-up helicopter! (Itâs exactly as contrived as it sounds but hey, comics. 80âČs. Whatever.)
Bruce pleads with Jason to wait for him. Jason agrees but as soon as Bruce speeds off, Jason makes the comment âSorry Bruce, but thatâs my mother in there with that lunatic.â
And hereâs where Iâd like to take a minute and say... I know a lot of Jason fans hate Starlin and ok, I get it. But I... donât really. Because hereâs the thing, he set it up, he could have had Jason barge in, guns blazing (as the saying goes), and while it may have been ârecklessâ it would STILL would have been understandable. Because Jason is a kid who has been trained in combat, who has just found his mom after both his other parents left him to fend for himself on the streets. Whether he meant to or not, Starlin set this up for Jason to be beyond reproach regardless of how he ended up in that warehouse.
But, and this is important, he didnât have Jason do that at all. Jason tells his mom, who has, until this moment, seemed to be a humanitarian thrilled to be reunited with the son she never thought sheâd see again. He tells her heâs Robin and tries to stop her from going back into the warehouse.
She fucking lures a child, her child, who she was genuinely happy to see an hour ago, into the hands of the Joker because heâs Robin and that means Batman is around and sheâs been embezzling funds from the relief organization. She points a gun at her child, asks the Joker what he wants to do with him, gives one pained expression to steel herself, and smokes a fucking cigarette while the the Joker beats her child to death.
Then, when the Joker predictably betrays Sheila, and Jason turns out to not be beaten to death, he drags his broken, bleeding body across the floor and unties her. When they canât get out because the Joker had the foresight to lock the door, Jason throws his broken, bleeding body in front of hers in a last ditch effort to save a woman who very literally sent him to his death.Â
So. Now that Iâve covered my undying rage for Sheila and explained why, yes, she is inarguably the worst of Jasonâs shitty parental figures, I can get to the rest of youâre ask.
In Universe reason why Jason doesnât talk about Sheila: Because she murdered him. Because sheâs an egg donor and nothing more. Catherine may have been too drugged up to really raise Jason, but sheâs the closest thing he has to a caregiver. My adopted cousins call my aunt mom. Sheâs the only âmomâ they talk about. I donât know if they know who their bio-moms are, but they wouldnât stop calling my aunt âmomâ just because they met them. My aunt is the one who provided for them and raised them. Sheâll never stop being theyâre mother. Catherine will always be who Jason considers his mother.Â
Real life reason why Jason doesnât talk about Sheila: Option 1 - Lobdell hasnât read âA Death in the Familyâ. Option 2 - Lobdell forgets the details of âA Death in the Familyâ. Option 3 - Lobdell has his own headcanon for Jasonâs past that he desperately wants to make canon but DC wonât let him because âA Death in the Familyâ hasnât been out of print since it dropped, so he just writes RH like his headcanon is canon and as long as he doesnât explicitly contradict one of DCâs most popular books he can do what he wants.

The Tragedy of Bruce and Dick and Jason...and Tim...and Damian...and, well, you get it
I maintain that Dickâs history with juvie and the system is actually crucial to understanding his and Jasonâs dynamic, not to mention the reasons Bruce took Jason in at all in the first place.Â
Its usually described as though Bruce took in all his kids because they reminded him of himself in various ways, but thatâs not really true. With Dick, yes, its been clearly canonized this was his motivation. He looked at Dick, who does look a lot like Bruce, especially when they were both younger, and saw a mirror of himself when he was a kid and had just lost his parents. He eventually took Dick in because he wanted to keep Dick from turning out like he had, consumed by his mission, his need to keep bad things from happening to other people, like had happened to him. To make sure Dick had more to his life than just that. He wanted a do-over in a lot of ways. Raising him was a way for Bruce to kinda see how his life wouldâve turned out differently, how he wouldâve ended up, if heâd taken a different path, if thereâd been someone who understood his pain and the intensity of his drive to DO something with all the emotions his parentsâ death left him with.Â
Yes, of course Bruce had Alfred, but its also been clearly laid out in the comics that Alfred - for as much as he saw Bruce as a son - just couldnât relate to him in the same way Bruce could to Dick. He never really understood Bruceâs need to become Batman, he just went with it and supported him anyway, because heâs Alfred and thatâs what he does. His kid wants to dress up like a giant bat and go fight crime? Well, okay, lemme get my sewing machine, guess heâs gonna need a costume.
And then with Tim, well, Tim came to Bruce, not the other way around, and theyâve always had an understanding because they come from very similar backgrounds. Same social standing, similar environments....Tim was neglected by his largely absent parents, not actually orphaned (until later), but Bruce definitely saw reminders of his own self-imposed isolation in Timâs parentally-imposed isolation. Thereâs similar links and parallels between Bruce and Damian, Cass and Duke.
Jason was always the outlier.
Bruce never took Jason in because he saw a reminder of himself in Jason, (with the exception of Jasonâs anger, which he could relate to on many levels, sure). But Jasonâs story really has zero parallels with Bruce. Bruce met him when he was stealing the tires off the Batmobile. Both his parents were still alive, even if they werenât exactly nurturing influences. He came from a wildly different social background and upbringing, was foul-mouthed, angry, bitter, vindictive, petty. Hell, he didnât even actually look anything like Bruce, the way we tend to joke about Bruce taking in boys who look just like him. Originally, Jason had red hair. Bruce dyed his hair when he made him Robin. The idea that Bruce took Jason in for the same reason he took in his other kids, because he saw himself reflected in him, saw what he couldâve been if his life had gone a little differently, it just doesnât work. On any level. Thereâs no scenario in which Bruce ever could have lived any version of Jasonâs life. No scenario in which Jason was only a few degrees removed from Bruceâs own personal experiences.
No, Bruce took Jason in for one reason and one reason only - because he looked at him and saw Dick Grayson. He saw the boy Dick Grayson could have grown up to become if Bruce hadnât taken him in, if Dick had been left to rot in juvie or elsewhere in Gothamâs corrupt system. If Dick had fallen through the cracks without anyone to catch him, the way Jason clearly had.
Forgetting where Dick came from, ignoring his original backstory, completely obliterates Bruceâs entire motivation for adopting Jason. And it completely erases Bruceâs real role in the trainwreck that became his relationship with both Jason and with Dick, not to mention the original relationship between Jason and Dick.
Because Bruce fucked up, big time, when he took Jason in. Oh, not that he shouldnât have done it, but in the WHY he did it, and the fact that he never really acknowledged this and nobody ever really called him out for it. With Dick, Bruce was trying to give him a better life. Even if he fumbled and went about it the wrong way, his motivations were still pretty pure. Bruce was aware enough on some level of his own flaws, his own deep-seated dissatisfaction with his own life, to genuinely want to steer someone he saw himself in from going down the same road, making the same mistakes. A huge number of Bruce and Dickâs early conflicts were essentially Bruce frustrated that he didnât know how to get Dick to stop making the same mistakes Bruce himself regretted making. Not getting that it still had to be up to Dick whether or not he did, that the choices ultimately had to be his.Â
But with Jason....Bruceâs motivations were not so selfless, and they were not nearly as self-aware. Bruce took Jason in pretty much in the immediate aftermath of his biggest fight with Dick ever, when he fired Dick as Robin and basically kicked him out...entirely out of an emotionally stunted sense of self-preservation. The idea of Dick being hurt, of losing him if he died, it terrified Bruce so completely that he pushed him away, as though if he lost him on HIS terms, deliberately, that would somehow be better, itâd hurt less. Except it didnât. He regretted it immediately, but he didnât know how to fix it without owning that heâd fucked up, without explaining to Dick WHY heâd done what he did, allowing himself to be vulnerable and admitting just how terrified he was of losing him....and Bruce just was not capable of that at the time (as if he is now, even).
And so then heâs out fighting crime one night and returns to the Batmobile, to find some scrawny little kid stealing the tires off it. A kid who wasnât remotely apologetic, who was defiant, and ballsy, and not about to be intimidated by even the goddamn Batman, who swung his tire iron at this giant dude in a Bat costume, spitting and kicking and screaming as if he had the slightest chance of winning. It didnât matter to him that he didnât, couldnât, Jason Todd was going down swinging. And in that moment, you can not tell me that its himself Bruce Wayne saw. That he looked at Jason and saw any version of himself or the kid he once was or even one he could have ended up as.
Nope, he saw Dick Grayson, the tiny little acrobat whoâd guilt tripped him, HIM, into letting him dress up in bright yellow and green and run across rooftops taking on bad guys twice his size, villains he shouldnât have had a prayer of defeating but did anyway, because he just refused to accept an alternative as reality. He saw the kid a young, angry Dick Grayson couldâve grown up to be if heâd been left in juvie, if heâd never had anyone else take him in and show him the kindness he thought heâd never see again after his parents died. He saw the Dick Grayson whoâd been originally consumed not with Bruceâs desire to pursue justice, but with a desire to pursue REVENGE. I know everyone tends to view it as the other way around, but that doesnât actually check out. Even in the backstories where Bruce finds the actual killer who murdered his parents, Joe Chill, Bruceâs own views on killing restrict him from every taking revenge rather than just making sure he goes to prison.Â
Not so, with Dick. Another element of Dickâs original backstory that everybody largely glosses over, even if they do technically keep it in mind - Dick Grayson wasnât born this pure, virtuous, glowing saint that so many fans and other characters make him out to be. The exact specifics vary in the different versions of his backstory reboots have resulted in, but in the vast majority of them, this is a kid who ran away and ruthlessly hunted down his parentsâ murderer, Tony Zucco, and who usually had every intention of killing him if Bruce hadnât stopped him. Dick was old enough to know right from wrong, murder is bad, blah blah....he just didnât care. And Bruce didnât stop him by making some compelling argument or showing him the error of his ways, he didnât tell him anything Dick didnât already know. Essentially, what all those various takes on the Zucco plot boil down to is Dick only really refrained from trying to kill Zucco, settling for bringing him in, because Bruce wanted him to. Because Bruce was the first and only person to show Dick any kindness since his parents died, and THAT is what Dick clung to, that was what he didnât want to lose.Â
(A little off topic, but additionally Iâve always maintained that Dick doesnât have this obsessive anti-killing stance that most people make him out to, being even more rigid in it than Bruce. This is the guy who has an extremely complex relationship with Deathstroke, whoâs mentored Ravager, who is the closest sibling relationship Damian has, not to mention his relationships with Huntress, Midnighter, Tiger, etc - all people who have killed many, many times, and often without remorse. Yes, Dick broke down after his role in Blockbusterâs death, and he had a panic attack immediately after killing the Joker, before Bruce resuscitated him - but if you ask me, this isnât because his personal morality doesnât make allowances for killing, its because deep down heâs still insecure about his place in Bruceâs life, and that HIM killing someone, specifically, could cost him his fatherâs affections. Which is a TOTALLY different thing from being too good or pure to kill, which is how heâs often painted as by writers and in fandom).
Anyway. Point being, the surly, defensive kid Jason Todd was when Bruce met him was absolutely someone Dick Grayson, orphaned circus kid remanded to juvie and likely to have fallen through the cracks and ended up on his own if Bruce hadnât intervened, could have ended up as. And so while Bruce had looked at Dick that first night at the circus and seen the potential for a do-over for himself, the road not taken, with this cemented on the night he steered Dick away from killing Zucco and instead prioritizing (Bruceâs personal view of) justice.....Bruce looked at Jason that night in Crime Alley and saw the potential for a do-over for his relationship with Dick, with the son heâd driven away, possibly for good.
And herein lies the fuck-up. Because while I do believe Bruce eventually grew to see Jason as his own person and love him on his own merits, for himself, and not just as Dick 2.0, he took too long getting there, and hurt both Dick and Jason way too much along the way. All because heâs too much of a control freak to just accept that it was these tendencies thatâd driven Dick away, that HE was the problem. Yeah, Dick contributed, sure, but Dick was the child. Bruce was the parent. It was always his responsibility to suck it up, swallow his pride, and be the one to reach out and repair the damage heâd caused by pushing Dick away. But because Bruce has so much trouble admitting where heâs done harm, he couldnât do that. Heâs this weird dichotomy of self-aware and willfully blind. He has no problem seeing his flaws when they exist in a vacuum. When theyâre ones nobodyâs getting actively getting hurt by in the moment. But because so much of his personality is centered around his all-consuming desire to protect his loved ones, keep them safe at all costs, ensure that he doesnât lose them the way he lost his parents.....over and over and over again in the comics, he proves incapable of recognizing when that very same desire is the thing thatâs actually harming them. He took in half a dozen kids who all shared a need to fly, to spread their wings, and time and time again kept falling in the same trap of trying to clip those same wings because he was equally terrified of them falling.
But because Bruce was so willfully blind to his own role in hurting his son, couldnât reconcile his desperate desire to keep Dick safe with the realization that he was the one doing Dick the most harm.....he HAD to convince himself that Dick was the problem. That if he, Bruce, had made mistakes, that they were mistakes that heâd done along the way, places heâd gone wrong in raising Dick, resulting in Dick growing up to be this person Bruce could no longer relate to, no longer see himself in, that he couldnât be a father to. And so, with Jason, he saw a chance to do it all over again, and do it right this time. Fix the mistakes heâd made the first time around, be a better father, make sure Jason didnât grow up to be the man Dick had grown up to be, the way heâd once set out to make sure Dick didnât grow up to be the man Bruce had become.
And so he created this trap that Jason and Dick had no chance to avoid falling into. There was no way around it. Because unintentionally or not, heâd pitted his two sons, two brothers, against each other before they ever even had a chance to meet. Heâd made it a competition that both were doomed to be stuck in even as neither could EVER hope to actually win. Dick was screwed because he could never hope to beat the kid that Bruce had essentially replaced him with, not when Bruce had only done that because due to his own fuck-ups, Bruce had decided Dick needed replacing, because their relationship was beyond repair. And Jason could never hope to beat the kid that Bruce had taken him in to replace, because he was from the get-go pitted against Bruceâs IDEALIZED image of his first Robin and son, the person he WANTED Dick to be, and who didnât actually exist outside of Bruceâs refusal to admit his own fault in his fractured relationship with Dick.
The very things he did that were GOOD for Jason, healthy, helpful, empowering....at the same time, HURT Dick. He adopted as his official son and heir within months of meeting him, even though he didnât end up adopting Dick, his son of over ten years by that point, until years after Jason died, long after Dick was already a grown adult. And this was a good thing for Jason, at first. Bruce DID love Jason, had already by this point started seeing all the ways Jason was his own person, not a second Dick Grayson, and being officially adopted gave Jason a sense of security and certainty in his place there that he desperately needed. Problem is, Bruce only adopted Jason so quickly and easily because he recognized that this was a mistake heâd made the first time, with Dick. That itâd been a mistake putting off adopting Dick, that heâd always backed out of showing Dick the adoption papers heâd had drawn up for YEARS by that point. All because Bruce was afraid of rejection, that if he tried to insist too hard on being Dickâs father, tried to actually draw comparisons between himself and Dickâs first father, the idolized John Grayson, heâd come up short and get an answer he was afraid to hear. It was easier with Jason, since Jason had never had a good relationship with his own biological father and had zero problem rating Bruce the clear winner in any competition between them.
But of course this hurt Dick at the same time it helped Jason, because he HAD always wanted Bruce to officially adopt him, and it was his own insecurities that kept him from broaching the subject and asking why he hadnât. The very fact that Bruce knew to do this with Jason, that itâd been a mistake not to push it with Dick, was because on some level, Bruce did know that Dick wanted this, needed this even, and that his own fears of rejection were baseless paranoia.....thereâs no way to avoid this compounding his issues with Dick, because it meant that on some level, Bruce had once again denied Dick something he desperately needed and craved from him. A clear indication of their relationship, where Dick stood with Bruce, how Bruce viewed him. Ironically, at the very same time this proved that Bruceâs fear of Dick rejecting him were baseless, it proved that Dickâs insecurities WERENâT baseless, because his place in Bruceâs eyes WASNâT entirely secure. He COULD be replaced.
And thereâs the irony of Jasonâs nickname for Tim. âThe Replacement.â Only it was never actually ironic, so much as it was insightful. Born of Jasonâs own insecurities. Because long before Tim came along, in the original family drama that was Bruce and Dick and Jason.....JASON was the original replacement, and they all knew it, only Bruce refused to admit it. Kept trying to act like it was all in Dick and Jasonâs heads, even while every choice he made with the two of them just hammered in the reality that it WASNâT. Neither of them was stupid. They were the original sons of the worldâs greatest detective. Trained to be observant and insightful. To read between the lines. They knew damn well that everything Bruce did with Jason was only because Bruce had decided (at the time) that his relationship with Dick was beyond repair. Unsalvageable. Heâd essentially given up on Dick as a son, written off any possibility of having the father-son relationship heâd always secretly wanted to have with Dick, all because he refused to admit he was the one standing in the way of that and refusing to accept the man Dick had grown up to be, differences of opinion and all....and so had started over with Jason.Â
And Dick saw exactly what Bruce was doing, cuz Bruce isnât exactly subtle when it comes to his personal relationships and his emotional issues. So it pinged every single insecurity Dick had ever had, and HARD. And once Jason saw Bruce and Dick interacting and heard the nature of their arguments, he saw exactly what Bruce was doing, and began second-guessing every good thing about his and Bruceâs relationship, wondering (with validity) how much of it had happened while Bruce was wishing itâd happened with Dick. Which of course pinged every single insecurity Jason had ever had, and HARD.Â
So from the moment Dick and Jason met, with a few rare exceptions where they were able to see past the Bruce-sized elephant in the room and view and interact with each other on their own merits, as their own persons, and just be BROTHERS, rather than dysfunctional sons of the worldâs most repressed dad....Bruce and Dick and Jason were all locked in this never-ending cycle of Hurt, Rinse and Repeat.
Bruce adopts Jason. Jason is glad. Dick gets mad. Jason realizes why Dick is mad, and now Jason is mad.
Bruce makes Jason his new Robin. Jason is glad. Dick gets mad, because Robin was his momâs personal nickname for him and not remotely something Bruce was ever the right person to give away. To make Jason his new sidekick, sure. But not with that name, the name Dick chose to honor his relationship with his mother. Jason realizes why Dick is mad, and now Jason is mad.
Bruce is happy when Jason calls him Dad and encourages it. Jason is glad. Dick gets mad, because Dick never felt encouraged or safe in calling Bruce Dad, even when he wanted to, because Bruce never encouraged it or even hinted it was what he wanted because Bruce was insecure and afraid Dick just didnât view him that way and would never want to call him that. Jason realizes why Dick is mad, and now Jason is mad.
Over and over and over, every single damn thing Bruce did just compounded the harm he caused both his sons in doing it. All because he refused to just admit what he really wanted all along, and actually WORK at making a reality - to be a father to both Dick and Jason, and have both of them view him as such.
And thatâs the tragedy of Bruce and Dick and Jason. They all wanted THE EXACT SAME THING ALL ALONG. But only Bruce could make it happen. No matter how much Dick and Jason wanted it, no matter how they raged at each other and blamed each other for not having it, Bruce was always the only one who could actually make them the family they all wanted to be. Because he was the parent. He was their dad.
And if you want your kids to accept you and call you and love you as their dad, you gotta do the goddamn job. Instead of calling do-over every time you fuck it up.
So of course Jason felt threatened by Tim when he came back, and of course he resented Tim, and called Tim âthe Replacement.â Even though Bruce hadnât actually sought Tim out as a replacement for Jason, there was no way for Jason to know that and no reason for him to believe it when told it....because Bruce had done this all before. With him! Every time Jason lashed out at Tim with that name, it was his own insecurities talking, his conviction that heâd been relegated to the same backburner heâd once seen Bruce shove Dick to, that heâd once insecurely expressed smugness about, when he could point to Bruceâs open affections as proof he was loved, but now knew exactly how it felt. But it wasnât like Jason could take comfort in the fact that Dick was now welcomed back in the manor, that he was at Bruceâs side again. Because Bruce STILL had never acknowledged where heâd fucked up. In the wake of Jasonâs death, Bruce and Dick eventually repaired their relationship....but only because DICK did the work. Was the one to reach out and make it happen, with Bruce so grief-stricken over the loss of Jason he didnât have the obstinacy to KEEP pushing his remaining son away when he came bearing an olive branch.
But even with that, Dick and Jason at least were still painfully aware that should never have been Dickâs job to do that. To step up, be the bigger man, the more mature adult, even though he was the child in that relationship. Dick did so because it wasnât worth it to him to insist on being in the right, even though he was. He eventually decided heâd rather have Bruce in his life on Bruceâs terms than not at all. But it was never his responsibility to do that, and that means Jason was never in the wrong to refuse to do that. To make it easier for Bruce, and coddle his own father when every child of Bruce Wayneâs has just as much trauma as he ever did, and he has no excuse for not doing the goddamn work of pulling his head out of his ass and giving his children what they need from him. Some actual honest, sincere, and UNSHAKABLE certainty that no matter what, he is their father and always will be.
And without that, the cycle was always doomed to repeat itself. First with Jason and Tim...because Tim might not actually have been a replacement for Jason in Bruceâs eyes, the way heâd unintentionally ended up making Jason a replacement for Dick. But without Bruce ever actually owning up to the mistakes heâd made with his two eldest, there was no way to address the fact that Jasonâs insecurities here were NOT baseless, that he had actual reason to worry that this is exactly what had happened. There was precedent.
And then it happened again. Because by the time Damian came into their lives, Tim - who also is not an idiot, and easily the most detective-like of Bruceâs first four sons - had been firmly entrenched in the family drama for some time. The Tragedy of Bruce and Dick and Jason had for a few years now been the Tragedy of Bruce and Dick and Jason and Tim. He, like Jason before him, had had a front row seat to Bruceâs obstinate refusal to admit his role at the center of this tragedy, and so clearly could see Bruceâs patterns and how his selective doling out of favoritism went hand in hand with who Bruce currently viewed as beyond repair, in terms of father-son dynamic at least. Â
So just like both his older brothers before him, Tim viewed the newest Wayne son as a threat, and a replacement. And just like both Dick and Jason, he wasnât wrong to do so. He wasnât RIGHT, either, but that doesnât mean he was wrong. That his fears were baseless. And so this time, just like when Tim had been the newcomer, circumstances were different, but the end result was the same. Bruce hadnât sought Damian out, and Damian hadnât come to him in the same sense Tim had. But once there, Damian received the lionâs share of Bruceâs attention as Bruce attempted to forge a bond with him, and so this time, it was the transitive property in reverse. Tim saw Bruce behaving in the way Bruce always did when a new son came into his life and occupied his focus, with tunnel vision - because Bruce always defaults to tunnel vision when committing himself to a new endeavor - and Tim reverse-engineered from there the belief that heâd been replaced and thus must have done something wrong, had somehow been lacking. Because thatâs the pattern in their family. Without exception.Â
(Among the boys at least, Cass always having been exempt from this fucked up little family tradition due to being the sole girl and never a Robin, thus occupying her own little niche that had no direct competition, unlike the boys who always ended up locked in that same competition Bruce had initiated with Dick and Jason so long ago.)
And thus it became the Tragedy of Bruce and Dick and Jason and Tim and Damian. With again, always, the painful irony being every single damn member of this family wants nothing more than the exact same thing - to be a family, and equally secure in that knowledge.
I honestly donât know how much this pattern has repeated with Duke, as due to not reading DC much since even before the nu52 for the sake of my blood pressure, all of my knowledge of Duke comes from fandom and fanfic. Which is more than enough to make me love him, but means I donât feel comfortable including him in meta currently, because I donât actually trust fanfics and issues synopses to have the same interpretation of the characters and dynamics that Iâd have if I read them myself. (Seriously, Iâm a little ticked off at how it took me like three years to learn that Dukeâs a meta, even, which is extremely interesting information and something I was very interested in knowing, and am side-eyeing the hell out of a lot of fandom for how long this bit of NON TRIVIA took to show up on my radar. Like, its not exactly a small detail, if so many ppl leave that out like what the hell else is getting left out of fandom takes on Duke and his character and story? Ugh, I canât believe I gotta start reading DC again, u guys let me down, why would u do this to me, ur the worst).
Anyway. Thought this was gonna be a little bitty post about how much Dick and Jason actually have in common and it ended up a Bruce Why Are You Like This essay. That actually sounds about right though.
The end!Â
(For now.....)Â Â

Blanket Disclaimer:
Summary:Â Tim and Jason have known they are soulmates for years, though neither has said anything about it. Tim thinks Jason doesnât know and is just trying to live with it. But one night, a minor mishap forces them to confront the issue head-on, leading to a series of events no one could have predicted.

First Chapter
Authorâs Note(s):Â In which as time passes, Jay's not having an easy time coping with all this soulmate stuff, and Tim's still trying to figure everything out. And Alfred is his usual awesome self.
________________________________________________________________
âForget almost being assassinated, how did he not die just from tripping over something in the dark, or eating expired food?â Jason asks as he looks around the disaster zone that is Tim Drakeâs apartment. There are takeout containers and empty coffee cups covering every surface, and clothing soiled with dirt and blood and what looks like sewer sludge strewn across the floor. Packaging and bubble wrap twist around the legs of tables and extension cables create startlingly effective tripwire traps. âCanât you people afford a maid service?â
âSurely even you arenât so thick that you donât understand why that would be a bad idea,â Damian points out as he walks in behind him, carrying several large boxes from the local hardware depot. As he deposits them, he surveys the apartment with something more like horror than disgust. âThis is the residence of the man my grandfather considers his equal?â
âHeâs not usually this bad,â Dick says with a sigh as he closes the door behind him with one hand and deposits his own burden of packages. His eyes rove across the open concept living area with a worried expression. âI was here like three weeks ago and it was spotless. I mean, his room was a disaster zone, but thatâs just Tim. Messy genius, you know?â
âIf this is how he lives, perhaps the social workers are correct that he needs a more qualified minder.â
Dick ignores that. âI donât get it. Itâs like he just gave up. What the hell happened?â
Jason remains quiet; he has a nasty suspicion he knows exactly what made Tim stop caring.
Whatever, Iâm making up for it now, arenât I? In fucking spadesâŠ
Heâs been avoiding Timâs apartment for weeks now, stubbornly squatting in different buildings every night or shelling out for a motel when he wants an actual bed or shower. But the last few days he found several itching bites on his skin, and hell no. He swore when Bruce took him in, he was done with bedbugs and lice and any other critter that can be found in questionably cleaned bedding.
As luck would have it, Dick was on his way over here with Damian to install handicap bars in Timâs bathroom and check the place over for any other chores or tasks that needed doing.
âI still donât see the point of that,â Jason says, nodding at the boxes of tools and components. âIn what universe do you see B letting Tim leave the manor any time in the next year or so? Even when he gets his memories back.â
âItâs a compliance thing,â Dick informs him. âNow that Timâs making actual strides in recovery, social services will be coming at some point to check that everything is set up for his rehabilitation if he chooses to come here. If itâs not done, it wonât look good.â
âThat chickâs still pushing this?â
âOh yeah. She keeps coming up with new requirements she insists be filled. Independent psych evaluations, bi-monthly physicals performed by state doctorsâshe even wants him to attend mandatory rehabilitation at some government facility in BlĂŒdhaven.â
âWhat? Why there?â
âAside from the fact Gothamâs mental health infrastructure is riddled with the criminally insane?â
âFairâŠâ
âBabs looked into her and it looks like Bruce had the right idea. Gillian Satoâs a nobody. Completely average in everything, trying to make a name in her department by going after a big fish. And you know that Bruce has been CPSâ great white whale since he took me in. You too.â
âI remember,â Jason says with a scowl.
It was shortly after he was taken in by Bruce. He had just started as Robin, was beginning to see Bruce and Alfred as family and the manor as home. And then some do-gooder social worker with the âbest intentionsâ and a dislike of Brucie Wayne exploited a technicality that let her remove Jason from the Wayne household. The next weeks and months dragged Jason through such an emotional wringer that his already abundant trust issues increased by orders of magnitude. Even before he and Bruce started to butt heads later, Jason would never truly be at ease in the manor ever again.
Or anywhere, really.
People let you down. People left. People could be taken away from you. These were the facts of life, and Jason vowed never to forget them again.
Itâs yet another reason heâs so resistant to the idea of soulmates. Having one just makes it easier to be let down or to have them taken away. Hell, heâs seen that firsthand, hasnât he? A simple errant bullet and he almost had to watch his die. He canât even imagine what this whole ordeal would feel like if he was close to Tim.
Lost in his thoughts, it takes him a moment to realize Dick is still talking.
ââŠher higher-ups barely know anything about her. Most of them are willing to let this thing with Tim go, but sheâs the one who keeps pushing it. Poking for loopholes whenever she hits a new roadblock.â
âSo have Barbie make her go away,â Jason suggests.
âAnd give support to the idea Bruce Wayne is above the law because of his money?â Dick challenges. âThat would put a lot more attention on the issue than anyone wants. For now, we just play it the legal way. Once Timâs eighteen, sheâll have lost a major avenue to exploit.â
âWhich means you guys have to put up with her trying to wrap you in red tape for the next four months at least.â
âThis is ridiculous,â Damian mutters.
âI know.â
âNot thatâalthough yes, this farce of legal compliance is a waste of everyoneâs time. But Iâm talking about how no one has done anything about Drakeâs condition other than wring their hands.â
âExcuse me?!â
âIf weâre ever going to go on with our lives, he must be fixed, and faster than some useless stretching is going to do.â
âKid, how exactly do you think your dad got back to fighting condition after Bane broke his back?â Jason questions. ââUseless stretchingâ was a big part of it.â
âAnd a hell of a lot of drive,â Dick adds. âWhich Tim doesnât really have enough of right now. I mean, I know he wants to get better, but itâs not the same as if he knew who he was.â
âExactly. He would already be walking, Iâm sure,â Damian nods. âThen youâre in agreement with me.â
âWell, yeahâwait. What am I agreeing with?â Dick asks, suspicious.
âThrough my observations of the situation, I have determined that Drake is unlikely to ever regain full functionality or his memory. The easiest way to fix this would be a Lazarus Pit. I happen to know of one in Cuba.â
âHoly no Batman!â Dick cries. âDid you forget what happened when I tried doing that for Bruce?â
âIt would be different in this case, since we know for sure that itâs Drake and not a decoy,â Damian argues. âAt least, the body bit. And Todd recovered from brain damage thanks to the Pit.â He considers Jason. âWell. More or less. I did not know you before, therefore I have no basis of comparison.â
âAnd you also missed the murderous rampage that happened afterward,â Jason growls. âNot being able to control yourself sucks. I wouldnât wish that on anyone.â
Even Tim.
Especially not Tim.
âIf anyone possesses the ability to fight off the effects of the Lazarus Pit, itâs Drake,â Damian insists. âHe does not have the same latent anger or violent tendencies as Toddâs files say he had.â
âHey, stay the hell out of my business!â
âTim might not be as violent as Jason is or wasââ
âScrew you, Dickhead.â
ââbut he definitely has the capacity for anger. And as it is, he suffers from severe depression,â Dick informs them soberly. âTo the point where heâs considered suicide at least once in the past.â
Damian and Jasonâs eyes snap to his face.
âWhat?â Jason demands.
âThat was not in his file.â
âBecause he didnât want it there,â Dick tells them, weary. âIn case someone tried to use it against him.â
âDonât you think thatâs kind of fucking important to people know about?â Jason demands. âEspecially if they have to go out in the field with him?â
Heâs having a sudden flashback to the night when everything came out into the open, when he swooped in to save Tim from a fall that he should have been able to divert himself.
Shit. What if that wasnât an accident like I thought?
âWe all have things in our history we donât want in the files,â Dick reminds them, his face becoming hard for a moment as if heâs remembering something. Then he shakes it off. âTimâs been dealing with it. Heâs on medication, he reaches out when it gets badâŠbut itâs an ongoing process. I donât need to tell you guys that.â
âIf he didnât want anyone knowing, heâs going to be pissed you tattled.â
âIâm only speaking up so Damian understands what a bad idea it would be to put Tim in a Lazarus Pit. Depression on top of Pit madness? I donât want to even think about what he might do.â
Not to mention bringing him anywhere near where Raâs might pop up is asking for trouble, especially since he canât fight him off right now.
âSo, you are insisting on this waiting nonsense,â Damian concludes, looking frustrated.
âItâs all we can do for now, Little D.â
The kidâs expression remains stormy.
â
Damian strides into Timâs bedroom one morning, wearing a determined expression and followed by his gigantic dog, Titus.
Tim feels a little wary, not so much because of the intimidating canine, but because his younger brother rarely comes near him voluntarily.
âI have read in numerous medical journals the benefits of animal companions in increasing the likelihood of recovery from traumatic brain injuries,â he announces. âSince Father is adamant, we are not getting another dog, I have decided to allow you to spend time with Titus while I am engaged in my studies. I am confident it will contribute to improvement in your condition.â He gestures at the dog. âTitus, stay with Drake. I shall collect you later.â
Then he nods to himself, as if concluding business, and leaves the room.
Tim stares after him, utterly bewildered at the turn of events. Titus watches the boy go, whines for a moment, and then looks over his shoulder at Tim, head cocked to one side as if wondering what that was all about.
All he can do is shrug, which he feels ridiculous about a moment later because Titus is a dog and has a limited understanding (even if Damian speaks to him as if heâs a human being). Still, a beat later, the dog wanders over to Timâs bed, and rests his head upon the mattress, gazing up at Tim with curious eyes, his tail wagging somewhat.
Slowly, Tim reaches out with his right hand and places it on the dogâs head, causing the tail-wagging to speed up, and scratches him behind the ears.
Titus thus becomes a semi-permanent element of Timâs recovery process. Damian comes by every morning to drop the dog off as if heâs a parent leaving a child at daycare or school and leaves for several hours. Titus then goes to Tim for obligatory head-pats and only lets up when it becomes clear Timâs energy is flagging. Even then, he doesnât go anywhere, simply curling up beside Timâs bed. When Damian returns, he pokes his head in, nods again, and gestures for the dog to depart with him.
The whole situation is bizarre, but Tim thinks itâs the way Damian expresses worry.
Having Titus around has the added benefit of intimidating Gillian Sato whenever she comes for one of her âvisitsâ. Jay canât always make it there before she does, and she somehow manages to insist on meeting with Tim privately to avoid bias (which he doesnât understand). Those visits when Jay isnât present are as short as possible to comply with her wishes, but theyâre long enough that Tim is always exhausted and confused at their end. With Titus there, heâs at least a bit more comfortable; the dog appears to sense when his anxiety is climbing or when Ms. Sato says something that makes him uncomfortable.
âItâs rather concerning, Timothy,â she tells him in a voice meant to be kind. âConsidering all the resources Mr. Wayne has at his disposal, that he insists you recover here. Instead of in a facility specifically created to rehabilitate TBI patients. Itâs almost as if heâs trying to keep you here under his watchful eye.â She leans forward, expression worrying. âYou want to get better as soon as possible, donât you?â
Before Tim can try to parse out exactly what sheâs asking him (because he knows somehow the words donât match her intention), Titus hackles raise, and he begins to growl.
Almost that same instant, Alfred will sweep in and declare that Tim is quite tired today, perhaps they can continue this interview some other time?
Tim wonders if he isnât standing at the door eavesdropping, even though somehow, he canât reconcile that image in his head.
Depending on the time of day that Ms. Sato arranges her âvisitâ, the family member that sits with him changes. He much prefers when itâs Jayâheâs the only one whose presence helps Tim calm down quickly after such an interviewâbut heâs learning to appreciate and trust everyone else in his family.
Heâs come a long way since waking up in the hospital and seeing nothing but a bunch of strangers.
Bruce continues to make efforts to spend time with Tim when he wakes up in the mornings. In addition to the sudoku and crossword puzzles, which Tim has started trying to do himself in his spare time, Bruce has started playing other games with him. First Go Fish, and later Memory.
They were games suggested by Dr. Thrussell to help with Timâs mental rehabilitation, but it turns out playing with Bruce is fun. His expression is awfully serious for what Tim knows are simple childrenâs games, but he always becomes exceedingly pleased when Tim makes a correct guess.
Dick, who Tim has learned from Alfred is a police officer, is not always around due to his work shifts being somewhat irregular, but when he is, he goes out of his way to help Tim with whatever he might need. Itâs both touching and overwhelming; Tim likes Dick, but he feels the same amount of mental exhaustion when he leaves as he does when Ms. Sato does.
How does one person have that much energy?
His favorites besides Jay, are Cassandra and Stephanie.
Steph is nice, as well. Sheâs affectionate with him, has a good sense of humor, and unlike everyone else who seems wary about touching Tim beyond helping him groom himself or for physio, sheâs very tactile.
And she smells nice.
He feels a level of comfort with her that is like when heâs with Jay, which he supposes is because they used to date before she and Cass discovered they were soulmates. Perhaps itâs why he doesnât question her presence in his life the way he still does sometimes with Bruce or Dick or Damian.
And then thereâs Cassandra, whoâs justâŠamazing.
Because sheâs like him, somehow.
Thereâs intelligence in her eyes, but she has trouble getting the words out just like he does. When she sees him struggling with his brain to mouth disconnect, she looks empathetic and he knows itâs not pity or guilt.
The latter is a look heâs started to recognize in Jay, and he doesnât like it.
He wonders if whatever makes him look like that is the reason he doesnât get along with the rest of the family. He wishes he could ask, though he suspects even if he could, he wouldnât get a straight answer.
Heâs not sure if thatâs normal for this family, or if itâs just another attempt to keep from upsetting Tim. Ever since he started to improve, everyone seems to be wanting to keep him occupied and entertained. Sometimes itâs funâlike today, with Steph egging him on while playing Candy Crushâand other times, itâs justâŠ
Exhausting.
His convalescence aside, Tim has noticed there are times when he feels exhausted and strained for reasons other than his injury. He doesnât know where those feelings come from, just that he dislikes them.
â
One evening, a little over three months following the shooting, Jason shuffles into the manor and wonders how this became routine for him.
It should worry him; how easy itâs been to slip back into the habit of being greeted by Alfred. Into toeing off his boots in the entrance closest and loitering in the kitchen to see if thereâs anything left over from lunch or dinner.
Itâs deceptively simple to fall into the mental trap of calling this place home again, which is why he never lets himself stay longer than a few hours. Even when Alfred keeps offering to make up a guest room or tries to tempt him with homemade scones for breakfast the next morning.
(He canât go near his old room, the mausoleum to shattered dreams and stolen childhood.)
Jasonâs usual arguments against that are quieter right now, his mind on what Damian said the other day: that no one is trying to help Tim.
In the strictest sense, the sentiment is bullshit; everyone in the Family has been bending over backward trying to make his rehabilitation priority, to protect him from two-faced social workers and asshole paparazzi looking for a story. But thereâs been no headway on the shooting, and he wonders if anyone else but him is still looking into it.
Which is stupid, because he knows for a fact that Bruce is a dog with a bone and wonât let any case go, let alone one where his kid got hurt.
So why hasnât he found anything yet?
He knows from experience, both as Robin and Red Hood, that some cases take longer than others. Bruce spent an entire year investigating the Holiday killings before Jason got involved, and during their years together there were several ongoing cases that dragged for weeks and months before a break could be made.
There are some that remain unsolved to this day.
But this is Tim, youâd think heâd be more motivated. UnlessâŠ
Unless he has found something and just doesnât want to share it because he thinks Jasonâs going to go on a vengeful, murderous rampage.
He clenches his fists.
It wouldnât be the first time that Bruce kept something from him or anyone else if heâs on a case heâs decided is his. He even keeps Dick out of the loop on stuff like that, and heâs the golden child.
Jasonâs probably just being paranoid.
ExceptâŠ
Except he learned paranoia from the best, and that paranoia isnât always just paranoia, and if Bruce thinks heâll react badly to something, of course heâs going to keep it from him. Which means theyâre going to have a problem because this case isnât going to get solved if they canât share important information.
Instead of heading toward Timâs bedroom, Jason changes course and makes a beeline for the Cave entrance in the study.
He reaches the bottom of the staircase just in time to see Nightwing and Robin peel out of the garage on two bikes. A cowl-free Batman is hunched over the computer, looking up something on the main screen, while the ones off to the sideshow various CCTV feeds from the Narrows, Tricorner and Burnley.
He catches flashes of Black Bat and Signal in the latter two, and scowls.
âI should be out there.â
âThatâs not your concern right now,â Bruce replies without even turning around. âYou should be upstairs with Tim.â
Thereâs a derisive snort at that, and Jason glances over to see Blondie balanced on her own bike, adjusting her hair beneath her cowl.
âProblem, Bat-chick?â
âNothing.â
âDonât sound like nothinâ.â
âJust seems like certain people are easier to forgive than others.â
âStephanie,â Bruce warns, still not looking at either of them.
âNo, itâs fine,â she replies. âLetâs keep tiptoeing around the giant pink elephant in the room. And by giant pink elephant, I mean crime lord.â
âThat what youâre goinâ with?â Jason challenges. âYouâve been stewinâ on that for three months, and youâre gonna give me grief over bullshit thatâs over and done with?â
âClearly itâs not over and done with.â
âIf youâve got a problem with me, strap on the steel tits and own up to what itâs really about.â
âOkay, fine!â Blondie hops off the bike to march forward, stopping a good foot away from him and shoving a finger at him. âYou might be his soulmate, but donât think that gets you off for all the crap youâve pulled. Especially since youâve known this whole time.â
âWhat I know or knew is none of your business. But if you really want to have a competition about who hurt him most, my name ainât the only one on the list.â
âAre you seriously trying to pull the âeveryone else did it too so itâs okayâ defense?â
âNo, Iâm telling you to be careful in that fragile fucking glass house of yours.â
âSpeaking of houses, how long are you going to keep playing house with Tim before you break his heart again? Are you going to do it right when he gets his memories back, or wait a few days for him to adjust and then drop him?â
âYou think Iâd be that big an asshole?â
âI know youâre that big an asshole. And so did Tim,â she shoots back, merciless. âHe told me you were dead.â
âI was dead.â
âAnd then you werenât. And he still always told that to anyone who asked. He knew whatever this is with you, it was never going to happen, but it also wasnât going away. So, he was trying to move on. And if heâs smartâwhich we all know Tim is, memories or notâheâll stick to that gut feeling. Because the longer heâs involved with you, the more hurt heâs going to be when you inevitably break his heart. If you were any kind of decent, youâd get the hell out of his life before he finishes imprinting on you like a baby chick.â
âThatâs enough,â Bruce says, and this time he does turn around. âStephanie, patrol.â
âIâm going,â she replies. âBut not because you told me to.â
She stalks toward her bike, and after a few angry revs of the engine, speeds off out of the cave.
Bruce is still looking in Jasonâs direction; he can feel the frown. âProvoking her isnât helpful to anyone, least of all Tim.â
âWhat argument were you watching?â Jason shoots back. âIf anyoneâs provoking anyone else, itâs her. And Iâm telling you now, B, if she wants a fight, Iâll give it to her. Iâm putting up with enough crap because of this soulmate thing, I didnât sign on to let Timboâs pissed off ex-girlfriend take shots at me.â
âThe lack of evidence in this case is frustrating everyone.â
Jason gives him a disbelieving lookâthereâs no way that Bruce can be so emotionally stunted that he canât figure out what Blondieâs little tiff was all about.
Then againâŠyes, he is.
Rather than stew over Blondieâs accusations (and the fact that sheâs got more of a point than heâd like), Jason decides to focus on what Bruce actually said.
âSo you havenât found anything on your end, either?â
He leans against the giant computer, keeping a conspicuous distance between him and Bruce, and trying not to feel awkward and naked without his helmet on. He doesnât actually remember the last time he was down here and not in uniform.
âNo.â
âReally. Nothing? Not a single goddamn clue? This is all just some random person that decided to take the kid out?â
âItâs not the first time someone has attempted to assassinate Tim.â
âYeah, but I heard about that, it was all planned for. This wasnât.â
âHence the continued investigation.â
âYeah, well, thereâs no way youâve been on the case this long and havenât found something.â
Bruce is quiet for a moment and then nods. âBased on the lack of available evidence, whoever did this was a professional. Elite even.â
âNo shit. We knew that from Day One.â
âIâve since narrowed down a list of suspects from around the world, who have the capability of pulling this off.â
âAnd?â
âAnd theyâre all either accounted for or dead.â
âSo why do you look more constipated about this than usual? Youâve had harder cases with less evidence.â
âAlmost all of these snipers were trained by David Cain.â
The name makes Jason tense. âHeâs dead.â
âYes. But before he died, he mentioned something to me. That there were others.â
âOthers like Cass, you mean.â
âHn.â
Jason grits his teeth. âSo, your theory is some designer assassin Child oâ Cain decided to come to Gotham just to shoot Tim?â
âItâs not a theory. Just a possible connection. Thereâs too little evidence to support it.â
âThen what the hell are you spending the time on it for?â Jason demands. âIf weâre going for wild conspiracy theories, why not an alternate universe or time travel? Itâs just as easy to speculate someone came back in time to assassinate Tim or put him out of commission for whatever reason.â
âI wonât discount those theories either,â Bruce allows, because of course. âBut in either situation, anyone coming here for Tim specifically would likely be enhanced to survive whatever means brought them here.â
âOr itâs one of us.â
Bruce doesnât meet his gaze, but thereâs a subtle tensing of his shoulder muscles.
âI saw that,â Jason points out quietly. Bruce says nothing. âYou think it would be me, donât you?â
âI never said that.â
âIf it were one of us, Iâm the best marksman, so if it were anyone of ours to come back and put a bullet in his head, itâd be me.â
Bruce stands then, agitated. âYouâre jumping to conclusions and letting your feelings cloud your judgment. This is only one of many theories, not even the one thatâs most likelyââ
âExcept we both know that ainât the case!â Jason snarls. âYou know as well as I do, Iâm probably the reason he got shot in the first place!â
âJasonââ
âI did this, B! I was in the middle of a pissing contest with some asshole moving in on my turf and Tim got caught in the crossfire. I might as well have pulled the trigger myself!â
âYou did not cause Tim to be shot,â Bruce snaps.
âThatâs not what you thought when it happened,â Jason reminds him bitterly.
âAnd Iâve since revised my opinion. I donât believe this to be related to the contract that was put out on Red Hood.â
âOh, yeah, thatâs a totally glowing recommendation!â
âWhoever is after you obviously isnât aware of your civilian identity, or they would still be pursuing you,â Bruce replies. âGoing underground would only keep you safe for so long, and itâs been months. Whoever is targeting you may have been watching Red Hood, but they werenât watching you. Therefore, the likelihood of Timâs shooting having anything to do with your activities is low.â
âSeriously? Thatâs your explanation?â
âJason,â Bruce sighs, and heâs pinching the bridge of his nose in a familiar gesture of exhaustion. âIâm trying to tell you I donât think youâre responsible for this. Why are you fighting me on it?â
âBecause nothing is ever that easy with you! And youâre usually the one driving the âJason messes everything upâ bandwagon. Donât tell me thatâs changed all because I happen to be the kidâs soulmate.â
âThat has nothing to do with it. Iâve already explained my reasoning, and itâs enough for me at the moment.â He fixes Jason with a calculating look that he doesnât like. âThe question is, why are you so determined to make it your fault?â
Jason opens his mouth to respond, but the words get stuck in his throat as he realizes he has no idea how to answer that.
Bruce continues. âYour behavior is inconsistent.â
âHell, yes, itâs inconsistent! Itâs been months and I still have no fucking idea how Iâm supposed to deal with all of this!â
âPerhaps you should take some time,â the older man replies, turning his attention back to the computer. âAway from here.â
Jason narrows his eyes. âAway from Tim, you mean.â
âHeâs at the point where he is no longer uncomfortable with the rest of us, and you did make it clear that you only intended to stay by his side until his condition improved. Iâm sure with some explanation you could take some time. It might help.â
âYou justâŠthatâs not evenâŠâ
Jason falters, not sure how to respond, because really, this is his get-out-of-jail-free card. He did say he was only going to stick around until Tim was doing better, and the kid is doing better. He can get back to his search for the dick that got him to go to ground, can get back to living his life the way he wants it and not based around a convalescentâs schedule.
But the idea of it just now, makes him feel queasy, like heâs running a dirty deal.
And on top of that, it bothers him that while Bruce is certain heâs not responsible for Timâs injury, he still obviously has an issue with the fact theyâre soulmates.
It shouldnât bother him.
It absolutely should not bother him.
And yet.
âYouâre a fucking piece of work, you know that?â he snaps, and heads right back up the stairs, mind racing and unable to settle on a single conflicted thought.
Upon reaching the study he finds Alfred on his way in, a tray of tea and sandwiches in hand. The older man takes one look at him and purses his lips, and puts down his burden.
âFrom your expression, I suspect Master Bruce will be sulking too much the rest of the evening to be interested in dinner.â
âLike I care,â Jason grunts, slamming the false front of the clock entrance closed.
âWere that the case, you would not be damaging the furniture.â
Jason scowls, though itâs somewhat tempered when Alfred offers him the sandwiches he was obviously about to bring down to Bruce.
He takes a petty satisfaction in polishing off every bit of food and tea while Alfred pretends to busy himself with tidying the already pristine study. Although heâs clearly remaining nearby should Jason need him, he doesnât try to force a conversation.
How does he always know
Jason surprises himself when heâs the one to break the silence. âWhy the hell does this soulmate shit have to be so complicated? Everyone else just gets it, and I just want to jump out of my fucking skin because itâs making me crazy.â
For once, Alfred doesnât comment on his language.
âAs I understand it, you have never had another person with whom you could confide about this before. You had not manifested your mark when you first came to us, and Master Bruce does tend to avoid matters of the heart and soul except when necessity requires it.â
Jason grumbles, âNo kidding.â
Itâs not just now, either.
Years back, Bruce got through the sex talk with his usual emotionless, detached aplomb, but didnât bother with any of the other stuff. Jason would have thought the guy had no heart at all, except he saw how invested he got with the women in his life that mattered.
âAnd I would imagine discussing it with Mr. Harper and Ms. Anders has not helped, given the substantial difference in circumstances.â
âYou got that rightâŠâ
âThen perhaps I might offer my own understandings if only to provide another perspective.â
Jason shrugs. âWhy not? Itâs not like anyone else cares, other than to look like I kicked a puppy whenever Iâm in the room with Tim.â
âIt has always been my belief that oneâs soulmate is the person who will have the most impact on oneâs life.â
âSo why isnât mine the Joker?â Jason shoots back spitefully.
âAs if that creature ever had a soul,â Alfred scoffs.
âIâm just sayinâ, your logicâs flawed.â
âAnd if you think a homicidal clown gets to claim to be the biggest impact on your life, I wash my hands of you. Do you realize you are scarcely 21 years old? You have an awful lot of life ahead of you to have that one moment, traumatic as it was, to define all of it. Perhaps in those first few months or years following the incident, yes. But you have a future, Master Jason. Soulmates are not just for the moment, but for the breadth of your lifespan. And however much strangeness we see on a regular basis in this world of ours, none of us have the ability to discern the future.â
âExcept maybe Duke.â
âExcept perhaps Master Duke,â Alfred allows, his mouth twitching somewhat. âBut even that only comes in flashes. He cannot know it all. And neither can you.â
âIs that your convoluted way of telling me âchin upâ?â
âThat is my convoluted way of telling you that you are not the only person to find the matter of soulmates difficult to navigate. And no oneânot even Master Bruceâis expecting you to figure it all out right away.â
Jason snorts. âYou sure about that?â
Alfred simply raises an eyebrow as if insulted by his pearls of wisdom being questioned, and Jason raises his hands in surrender.
Never question Alfred. He knows everything.
Still, he suspects that Bruce will be getting a rather pointed talking-to in the near future. It makes him feel marginally better about the whole thing.
âNow,â the older man continues in a businesslike tone, âTimothy is in the family room this afternoon. However, I would understand if you do not feel up to seeing him today and would be perfectly willing to make an excuse for your absence should you require it.â
Jason almost accepts the out, but then remembers Bruce making a similar suggestionâalbeit with more suspect motivesâand shakes his head.
âNah,â he sighs. âKnowing Timbers, heâs been waiting up all day. Least I can do is say 'hi'.â
âIndeed,â Alfred agrees neutrally, but thereâs a twinkle in his eye that suggests approval.
As long as no one else decides to ambush me with their emotional crap today, it should be fine, Jason decides, leaving the study and wandering down the hall.
â
Tim is sitting in the family room watching Arranged.
He spends most of his time there, either alone or with whatever member of the family is still at home that day. After so long being practically bedridden, heâs desperate to be anywhere thatâs not his bedroom.
Alfred wheels him out into the gardens whenever itâs not raining or damp or windy (which, being May, it almost always is), and heâs since enjoyed the sun on his face for the first time that he can remember. He also got to experience his apparent first sunburn, because it seems his skin is notoriously sensitive.
Worth it though, to be outside.
He shifts, sitting up on the couch in front of the large television. Heâs surrounded by a staggering number of blankets and pillows; Timâs not even sure he really needs them to support him anymoreâheâs been sitting up on his own for a whileâbut Alfred insists itâs better safe than sorry.
Titus is lying on his feet, dozing but alert. Timâs wheelchair stands beside the couch, with Alfred the Cat (Damian seems to not have much imagination when it comes to pet names) curled up on the seat. Occasionally he opens one eye as if to check on Tim, and then returns to sleep.
Heâs not a bad recovery-cat, I guess.
On-screen, Cordelia de Vere and Bertram Montmorency get to know one another and discover they actually get along, being of complementary temperaments. They have undeniable chemistry and their dialog is full of witty diatribe and veiled insults that he canât help enjoying. Itâs much more interesting than what Cordelia had with her soulmate, which he agrees with Jay about. Timâs not sure if itâs a better match than Bertram and Maurice, who the prince continues to see in secret. Meanwhile, Gerald seems to be getting along just fine, joining the army and vowing to build himself up to meet the standards of Cordeliaâs parents. He doesnât actually seem outwardly bothered by her absence, except for several sequences of him writing her love letters.
âNever mind a bullet, this is the kind of crap that gives you brain damage,â a voice informs Tim, amused and somewhat mocking as usual.
Timâs eyes snap instantly to Jay as he appears in the room, and he feels a smile break out on his face.
âHi.â
Itâs one of the words heâs been working on in therapy and can finally say it without having to mentally or actually hum through a childrenâs nursery rhyme song. It gives him a thrill of accomplishment, albeit one that pales at the thrill when Jasonâs eyes widen in surprise, and then something that Tim imagines might be pride.
âHi back,â he replies and glances around the room. The car glares up at him like he expects him to question or end his occupation of the space, but Jason simply throws himself down on the nearby easy chairâitâs the only piece of furniture free of pillows and blanketsâand squints at the television. âI canât believe youâre still watching this.â
Tim snorts and shoots Jason a wry look, mentally telegraphing his thoughts. And what are you doing right now?
âDonât give me that, Iâm humoring the invalid.â
âUh-huh,â Tim grunts.
âThatâs a lot of sarcasm for someone who canât manage actual words yet.â
Tim doesnât take Jasonâs abrasive comments as an insult. Along with Steph, he is the only one that doesnât try to coddle him. He talks to Tim the same way he talks to everyone else, which, like heâs equal to them even though his brain is making things hard for him right now.
Still, the reminder of his lack of verbosity directly on the heels of his recent accomplishments strikes something in Tim, something like annoyance. Something that suddenly wants to prove a point.
He frowns in effort, trying to line up thoughts and words and the movement of his mouth.
âThis is seriously predictable,â Jason complains. âObviously the writers are trying to set it up that he shows up again and sweeps her off her feet. Then the rich boy goes back to his boyfriend and watching all this is a total waste of time.â Tim doesnât respond, and Jason glances over at him to gauge his reaction. Only to notice now that Tim is watching him instead of the show, mouth turned downward in a frown. âWhat?â
Timâs lips part, then purse, and he makes a kind of humming noise in his throat, closing his eyes in concentration. He takes a deep breath and then utters a sound.
âJuâŠjjuhâŠjuh-ayâŠâ
He blinks, somewhat surprised by himself. Jason seems to echo it. âDid you justâŠ?â
Timâs mouth quirks upward and he feels almost smug. Then, he slowly sounds out the word again. âJa-ay.â
Itâs slow and stilted, and his voice is raspy from disuse, but itâs there, decrying his enforced muteness.
Jay is sitting up ramrod straight now. âHoly shit, youâre trying to talk.â
The naked awe on his soulmateâs face makes him feel warm, and so Tim plods onward, ignoring the way sweat breaks out on the back of his neck or the way he feels a little dizzy.
âThâŠthanâŠkyuuâŠâ
Jayâs expression appears to shutter, awe becoming confusion. âUhâŠfor what?â
âSaâŠsayâŠâ Tim is panting a bit from the effort now.
âHey, forget it, donât push yourself,â Jason implores him, sitting up and making a pacifying gesture. âThree words is enough progress forââ
âSay-ved,â Tim interrupts doggedly. âSafe. Me. HeardâŠduhâŠdiâŠDickâŠsay. You. Say-ved me.â
There.
That was almost two full sentences. He knows theyâre crude and basic and maybe not quite what he was trying to say, but he managed to communicate on his own without blinking. It fills him with a buoyant glee, a bubbling temptation to laugh though he knows from experience that doing that would just make his head spin and throb.
He expects Jay to look proud again, happy or relievedâmaybe even a sarcastic, teasing quip.
What he doesnât expect is the wild gleam in Jayâs eye or the way the blood rushes from his cheeks. He looks like someone punched him, and then heâs standing, backing away.
âThatâŠâ He swallows. âIâve got toâŠâ
He doesnât finish and instead turns and practically bolts from the room, leaving Tim staring after him in shocked dismay, wondering what just happened.
________________________________________________________________
To Be Continued
Poor Timmy. And just when he's starting to show some of his old spunk, too...
Things are heading for their first boiling point. Someone's got to knock some sense into Jay, either literally or metaphorically (who wants to take bets on who it will be?).Â

Favorite Male Characters
plI was tagged by @genginger for top 5 male characters, so after some thought, Iâm going to list them here (in no real particular order)!
1. Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect)
Come on, how can you not love Garrus? Even if youâre not romancing him, heâs your right-hand man, and thereâs no Shepard without Vakarian. Heâs always got your back, he snarks a lot, heâs actually a giant dork, and his voice is always nice to listen to. He can even do the impossible and make Shepard dance well!
2. Jason Todd (DC Universe)
Okay, look, I love characters that come back from the dead looking for revenge, so of course I love Jason. Heâs the edgy ex-Robin who I headcanon as actually being somewhat of a softie inside (very inside). And of course personally, I would also like to see the Joker dead.Â
3. Bucky Barnes (Marvel)
Yes, weâre going on a bit of a theme with characters that should have died... But how can I not love Bucky who managed to start to break out of his brainwashing when Steve showed up? Plus thereâs the murder stalk, the awesome fight scenes, and him watching out for Steve when they were younger...definitely one of my faves.Â
4. Dabi/Todoroki Touya (Boku No Hero)
Okay, so if Dabi isnât Todoroki Touya, obviously everything falls flat, but then again, if he isnât Touya, what even is the point. This should come as no surprise to anyone given how much Iâve written for him (or just looking at the last two characters listed because surprise, surprise, itâs another guy coming back from the dead as a bit of an edgelord and looking for revenge, I told you I love this trope). But itâs just the whole gothic sensibility of the Todoroki family, the cool flame powers, and just the rage against Endeavor. (And the new edgy coat helps too).
5. Quan Yizhen (Tian Guan Ci Fu/Heaven Officialâs Blessing)
Itâs my fight-obsessed curly-haired son! How can I not love the kid who has no idea what to do with gold bars, beats up anyone who bad mouths his Shixiong, and in general, has no idea whatâs going on? Let the poor boy ride the golden skeleton carriage and hug his Shixiong!
Special mentions: Yu Yan from PUBG Romance of the Century since heâs such a hard-working voice-con cutie, and Chu Wanning from 2ha for being both way too relateable and being the white cat shizun I want to pat on the head.Â
Tagging @ohmoka, @sacchariwrites, @mistystarshine, @platoapproved, @bloodycarnations if you guys want to do it

The Batboys As Dads [Headcanons]
Since me and @loudmouthwally have been screaming about dad! Dick and dami and such, I decided to write headcanons after she suggested it to me. As always: reader insert đ
Dick Grayson
He honestly wasn't sure on being a dad
But when he laid his eyes on you, his daughter/son, he was absolutely ready to fight everyone who had any second thoughts about you.
Dick Grayson was ready to lay down everything for you. Even leave the mantle of Nightwing to someone else, because jesus christ, you were so important to him. (And still are)
Dick Grayson is a playful man, and if you think he wouldn't hit himself on the head with a skillet to make you laugh, you are very, v e r y mistaken.
As you grow up, there is one thing you learn about Dick Grayson.
Dick is a dad joke within himself.
Dad jokes for d a y s.
There is no escaping them.
"I had a scarecrow friend try out for stand up comedy, but the audience thought he was too corny."
"I'm calling the police on you for harassment."
Despite Dick being a silly dad, he is also very protective.
No boys/girls until you are dead.
Actually, no wait, nope, not even in the afterlife.
He will stalk you while on your dates, being as obvious yet hard to spot as possible.
Dick is the waiter, the random guy you bump into on the street, the carnival's janitor.
He's fucking everywhere, man, don't even try to kiss your date because Daddy Dearest will know. In a heartbeat.
#GroundedForKissingMyBoyfriendAfterFindingOutMyDadWasSpyingOnUsAftetHeFELLFROMTHEDAMNTREESCREAMINGBLOODYMURDER #IWANNANEWDAD #JASONBEMYNEWDAD
Despite all the crap he puts you through, Dick loves you very much and just wants the best for you, and that includes a happy life and childhood. He knows that you can lose a lot in a blink of an eye, and he wants you to be happy.
Yet, while he holds a superhero job, it can be pretty straining on your relationship as father and daughter/son.
Just know Dick loves you very much, even if he is a pain in the ass crack.
Jason Todd
If there is one thing Jason Todd does not know how to do, it is Parenting 101.
Please send help. He has no idea how to even wrap a diaper on a child, let alone r a i s e one.
Jason had to have Dick help him out a lot little.
However, after a while, Jason fell into a good routine after doing a lot of research and hands-on learning.
He totally owns one of those 'Parenting for Dummies' books but will completely deny any kind of knowledge about it should anybody find it (demon spawn from hell aka damian fucking wayne)
Spending time with you, Red Hood later. ALWAYS.
He honestly adores you.
You are his everything and if there's one thing Jason never thought he would have wanted until now, it is definitely you.
Instantaneous Death to anybody who even mentions your existence.
Jason Todd Will Not Hesitate, Bitch^TM
He actually snapped at a woman who said she could just 'eat you up'
"Yeah, well, we don't believe in cannibalism, so."
Jason definitely sings you to sleep, and is proud, even touched, that you will raise hell if he fails to sing you to sleep right on schedule.
As you grow and get into school, Jason is quick to teach you self defense.
And taught you that all boys had a contagious virus and to punch any that tried to kiss you or hold your hand. (Female)
And taught you that girls were the devils spawn and were to be avoided at all cost (Male)
You once got suspended for calling the teacher an 'asshat'. Jason was lowkey sort of proud. Dick wasn't amused.
You have a white streak in your hair, and when you need to be with your father, he will play with that lock of hair.
You and Jason are exactly alike, with some different attributes. But that doesn't make you any less of a Todd.
Your damian's favorite. Just saying.
Tim Drake
You were definitely not what Tim Drake was expecting.
But definitely everything he wanted.
If there is one thing you both know how to do, it's complain.
"Oh my god, I did literally everything the books told me to do. Why are you still c r y i n g???"
"...WAH-"
*slams head into desk*
Tim swears that if he wasn't a coffee addict then, he fucking is now.
No sleep. At all. You give him too much shit.
Jason thinks it's hysterical because you seem to be Karma in a onesie for all the times Tim was a little shit to him.
Tim loves you to the moon and back, but you never fail to irk at least one of his remaining nerves that still works.
P r o b l e m a t i c C h i l d r e n
Yes, that means Tim and you.
Did he give you a bath just now? No the fuck he didn't. Did he just clean the high chair? No the fuck he didnt, bitch. Did he just change your diaper? Come back, bitch. It's a shitstorm in here, and you're in the eye of the hurricane. Gas mask it up, son.
As you grow up, Tim wants you to get out there and do whatever. He's slightly not ok with you dating, but don't think he won't do at least 15 background checks, stake outs, securing the perimeter, interrogations, whatever. Each. 15 each.
You are a computer genius just like him, but don't spend your time on the computer all the time. Mostly just to play games here and there.
As you grow in school, there is not a single day that goes by that you absolutely loathe it.
Honestly
Why cant you just homeschool. We have the capability too.
"Who even needs human friends? Uncle Damian is doing just fine with his animals."
"He also has homicidal tendecies, so. You're gonna get some human interaction whether you like it or not."
Honestly, you and Tim butt heads all the time, but at the end of the day, you are his flesh and blood, and he will protect and love you till the world stops turning.
Damian Wayne
Let's be honest: Damian Wayne would be the most worried and/or scared person on earth if he found out he was gonna be a dad.
All these insecurities about his past, the bad memories, all of it coming back to haunt him as he thought about his child.
Damian was not ready at all.
He was honestly very weary of you. Since he didn't really get along with children, there was no way to explain to him how to raise his kid for the next eighteen years.
He realized that when he held you. Kinda like an 'aha' moment, but with an 'oh shit' instead.
After Damian warmed up to you, though, he was Dad to the Max. Spin the fucking wheel to jackpot.
Damian has very high expectations for himself as a dad. He needs to be on top of the mark at all times or he is sure he has failed you.
Damian is a perfectionist, so if he doesn't get you to calm down after screaming bloody murder on the first try, he literally wants to stab something because wtf he was sure he was doing this right.
Damian sings you to sleep. Dami has the voice of an angel when he's quietly singing and it's soothing as fuck. Never fails to make you sleepy. Add in a bit of bouncing while leaned against his shoulder and it is lights o u t.
Damian is a very teasing father, despite how serious he can be. You are the only person who he shows his soft, relaxed side too. You are his everything and he lets you know that shamelessly.
Damian will kill anybody who even dares to mention your name or make horrible implications about your existence.
That is his child and he will fuck someone up if they speak wrongly of you. Talk shit, get hit, bitches get a fucking katana to the eye.
Definition of the meme "Don't talk to me or my son ever again."
Damian Wayne Will Definitely Not Hesitate, Bitch^TM
As you grow up, Damian makes it crystal clear.
NO DATING AT ALL.
Damian is protective as fuck. He needs to know where you are, where you are going, who is going with you, who is all going to be there, how long is it gonna be, how long are you gonna be driving there, are there gonna be any boys present, Drake, would you finish the damn background checks already???
Damian is just like Dick: not even in the afterlife or the bullshit after that.
You are very much like Damian. Practically a spitting image. It makes Damian feel proud because of the Wayne Legacy that you might keep up, his ego, and the fact that his child is a badass and looks like one too.
Damian and you are not perfect, though. You two often get into arguments about certain things, usually the littlest. One of the things you two often fight about, however, is the mantle of Robin.
Huge no-no.
Noooo. No no no.
There is no way you are becoming Robin. You are his baby and he is NOT going to let some STUPID costume ruin that for him.
He can be very cold, even to you at times, and since you didn't inherit his amazing lack skill of patience, you are often calling him out on his bullshit and his attitudes.
Seriously. Who even is the adult here anymore.
You are taller than Damian. It infuriates him to no end.
"Dad, how's the weather down there?"
"gROUNDED."
At the end of the day, Damian loves you dearly and you love him dearly as well. There is never a dull moment between you two and it makes for a harmonious atmosphere. Even if you can be a pain in each other asses, Damian is sure he would be lost to the world of familial love had it not been for you.
You are his rock and he is your oasis in a barren land. Family always, always matters to you both.

Killer - Part 2
Part 2!! Woohoo! Definitely let me know what you think about this one? What decision should Batmom make?
Dick and Jason make their way down to Cave an hour after mom had asked them to leave. Jason had contacted Tim, told Red Robin that he needed to get back to Gotham as soon as possible and to bring Superboy. Y/N had practically adopted the younger Super when Superman decided that he didnât want anything to do with him. Dick had taken Damian upstairs and managed to convince their youngest brother to go to bed.
âBruce?â
Alfred sits quietly at the computer, watching a security feed. âAlfie, whereâs B? And whereâs mom?â
The butler turns and looks at the two oldest Wayne children, âMaster Bruce has taken Miss Y/N to the GCPD. He has put her under arrest for murderâ
âWhat?!â
Jason lets out an angry snarl, âI told her not to confront him alone! I knew he would do something stupid! Did he even listen to her?â
âNot from what I heard, Master Jason. He did not seem keen on listening to her side of the storyâ
The boys make their way to the monitor, watching as Batman shoves Sparrow forward, not even reacting as she stumbles and falls in front of the Commissioner. âThat bastard. Iâm gonna kill him. Iâm gonna fucking kill himâ
Dick growls, âIâll help, little brotherâ
--
The Batmobile screeches into the cave several hours later. At this point, Damian, Tim, and Conner have all joined the oldest brothers in the Cave. Everyone knows what Bruce has done to Y/N, and they are all pissed.
âWhat. The. Fuckâ
âLanguage, Jasonâ
âNo! No, you donât get to say that! What the fuck is wrong with you?! You arrested your own wife? You threw her into jail, for what? For killing the Joker? What -â
âYes. Yes, I threw Y/N into jail for killing the Joker. She killed a man, she needed to be punished just like every other criminal in Gothamâ
âWell, then you might as well arrest me and Damian! And probably Conner too! I know that heâs accidentally killed people, and Damian and I damn sure have! You might as well take the three of us to jail too. Iâll even make it easy for you! Hereâ Jason throws his guns on the floor at Bruceâs feet, âgo ahead, cuff meïżœïżœïżœ Still Bruce doesnât move. âWhat are you waiting for?â
âIâm not going to arrest you Jason, and Iâm not going to arrest Damian or Conner either. Iâm not taking my own sons to jailâ
Jasonâs fist catches Bruce by surprise, and the crack of his nose breaking is undeniably satisfying. âYou wonât take us to jail, and yet you throw her in jail without a second though! You fucking bastard!â
âTodd is right, Father. You are being unbelievably stupid right now. You have possibly just cause the end of your marriage, all because you would not listen to your wife.â
Dick places a hand on Jasonâs shoulder, gently pulling him away from Bruce and back toward his younger brothers, âShe did it for Jason, you know. She killed the Joker because he was about to kill Jason again, was going to recreate his death. Y/N ⊠Mom killed the Joker so Jason wouldnât break his promise to you. She did it because she thought that you would more willing to listen to her than to Jasonâ
âAnd how do you know this?â
âBecause thatâs what she told Jason.â
âYouâre a dumbass, Bruceâ Itâs the first-time Tim has spoken up since Bruce got to the Cave. âSheâs loved you through everything, even forgave you for getting her son killed, for lying to her about Dickâs death. Other than me, she was the only other one who didnât think you were dead when you were lost in time. Without her you would probably still be lost. And you just tossed her aside, didnât even give her a chanceâ
âY/N took me in, practically adopted me. Sheâs the kindest woman Iâve ever known, do you really think sheâs break a promise without good reason?â Conner crosses his arms over his chest, trying to hold back his anger.
âIt doesnât matter why she did it, all that matter is that Y/N killed a manâ
Even Alfred is fed up with Bruce at this point, âMaster Bruce, you are being unbelievably obtuse. I apologize for speaking out of turn, but I do not believe that I can listen to your excuses for another moment. I believe that I will be retiring for the evening. I would also like to request tomorrow off, it appears that I must make a visit to the police stationâ
âAlfred -â
The butler interrupts again, âActually, I donât believe that I need to request the time off, as it appears that I have almost a yearsâ worth of vacation and sick time. I am taking a sick day tomorrow, and I do not need your permission for those. Good night, Master Bruce. Boys.â
Jason snorts, âDamn. You really pissed him off. I donât ever remember him taking a day off even when he was sickâ
âIt appears that you are completely alone in your decision, Father. I will also be leaving tomorrow morning to search for Ummi.â
âWeâll all go with you, Damiâ
âOf course, I would expect nothing less. Hopefully, being alone in the Manor will give you time to think on your actions and formulate an acceptable apology.â
Bruce doesnât even react, just turns toward the medbay to reset his nose. He completely ignores his sons, and even when heâs finished cleaning his face he doesnât acknowledge that his children are still there.
--
Youâre woken up the morning after you were sent to jail by the sound of dishes being washed and several people talking. Stumbling out into the living room youâre surprised to see all of your sons and Alfred quietly talking.
Dick, who for some reason is hanging upside down over the edge of the couch, grins when he sees you, âHey, mom!â
âBoys, where are your manors? Go do the dishes and let Alfred sit down.â Connor starts washing the dishes, Tim dries them, and Damian puts them away. Dick gets up and wipes down the counters, and Jason makes you a plate and brings it to you. âThank youâ
âIâm so sorry, mom. Itâs all my fault that Bruce arrested you, if I hadnât -â
âStop, Jay. I wouldnât change what happened for anything. If it comes down to it, I will level an entire city for any one of you boys. I will do anything to protect my children, I donât want any of you to ever doubt thatâ
âWhy?â Damian sounds genuinely confused, âWhy would you risk Fatherâs anger for one of us? You have no biological obligation to any of us, we arenât yours by DNA. I understand that you love us, however it was Fatherâs decision to take us inâ
âDamian, your father is not the one who decided to take you all in. Alfred and I were the ones to make that decision, and we informed Bruce that we would be taking you in, and that it was not up for discussion. I cannot have children of my own, and all of you are my sons. Perhaps not by blood, but by choice, and I am your mom by choice.â You glance over at the only Super in the room, âAt least Bruce and I had a conversation about most of you boys. The first time Tim brought Conner home I told Bruce that there was no way in hell I wasnât going to make  my son tooâ
The boys pile around you, taking up all of the available space on the couch. Even Alfred sits near you, placing a gentle hand on your knee. âWe will all support you in any decision that you decide to takeâ The boys quickly voice their agreement.
âWait, wait â What decision?â
âWhether or not you want a divorce, of courseâ Alfred says it so matter of fact, like this is just a normal conversation.
âA divorce!? Why would I get a divorce? Bruce and I fight all the time, weâve always been fine in the end!â
âUmmi, Father has never put you in jail before. He has crossed a line, treated you as a criminal. That is something unforgivable.â Your youngest son curls closer, causing the other three to shift and smother you more, Conner floats above you, hovering. âHe does not deserve you, Ummi. You â you are unique, you are kind in a world that is full of hate. Father can no longer be trusted with youâ
âDami, sweetheart, your father is a good man. Heâs â confused. Confused and angryâ
Jason huffs and you card fingers through his hair, âThe kidâs right, mom. Bruce really overreacted, he crossed a line. I know you love himâ Jasonâs face scrunches at the word love, âand I never figured out how he managed to get you to love him back, but this shouldnât be something that you just forgive.â
âWeâll side with you, even if you donât get a divorce. I know that B trained us, and weâre his sons so we should side with him, butâ Tim lifts his head at this, âYouâve always been the one there for us. You never tried to hide how much you love us. If â if you do get a divorce ⊠will you still want us as your sons?â
âOh, Timmy. Of course Iâll still want you as my sons!â
Dick grins and reaches over Damian to smack a kiss on your cheek, âGood! âCause you werenât getting rid of us!â Dick shifting around caused Damian to get displaced, and when he tries to get back in his spot he ends up kicking Tim, who knocks his forehead into Jasonâs chin. This causes an all-out wrestling match in your living room. Conner yelps when Dick grabs his ankle, yanking him out of the air.
When the boys tumble to the floor, Alfred takes the now vacant spot next to you. âMiss Y/N, I hope that I am not overstepping any boundaries -â
âYouâve always been like a father to me, Alfie. You donât have to worry about boundaries with meâ
The older manâs eyes soften, âYou have always been the daughter I never had, Y/Nâ He leans forward, and in a brief moment of affection, wraps you in a tight hug. âWhether or not I have overstepped boundaries, I hope you are not angry with me for thisâ Alfred pulls a stack of papers from ⊠somewhere and hands them to you. âThis is a divorce contract. You and Master Bruce never signed a prenuptial, and because of that you will receive 50% of everything that Master Bruce owns. This includes the manor, the corporation, and any assets he has. You will, of course, have to agree to a custody agreement for Master Damian. You legally adopted the boy, and he is old enough to choose which parent he would like to stay withâ
Staring at the pile of papers, you take a steadying breath, âYouâve â youâve really prepared for this. How the hell did you manage to get all of this done?â Flicking through a few more pages, you can see that Bruce has already signed everywhere he was supposed to. âWhat -â
âMaster Bruce has a plan for everything, this includes a divorce. He has had a divorce contract for several years now, it is updated every year. All I did was retrieve it from the safeâ
Tears spring up, âHeâs had this for years? Planned to divorce me for years?â
âI do not believe that he planned to divorce you, Miss Y/N, only that he wished to be prepared for a divorce should one ariseâ
âIâll need to read over everything today, but â I need to be alone to do this.â You glance over at the boys who have now separated into teams, Conner deciding to referee, and are still trying to take each other down. âDo you mind -â
âIt has been quite a while since I have been to the zoo. I believe that today is a perfect day for the boys and I to rectify that situation. We will be back for dinner, Miss Y/N. Is that enough time for you to make a decision?â
âIt should be, yeah. Thanks, Alfieâ
âOf course, Miss. As the children stated, I will support and decision that you make.â
You flash a brief smile, and give each one of your sons a kiss on the cheek as they leave. Shutting and locking the door you stare down at the contract in your hand. On trembling legs, you make your way to the couch and start to read. You have a choice to make, a choice that will affect you for the rest of your life.

Can You See Me Now? Chapter 1
This is my newest Batman fic.
Summary:
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
After some nudging from Spoiler and Batgirl, Tim seeks out the Red Hood to ask the older teen for permission into his territory to follow up a lead. It was a small, innocent action but it was the starting point for both Tim and Jason to get to know each other.
But things are never as they seem and things always get better before they get worst.
Read it here on AO3
(Sorry to mobile users, the read more I put on the post does not seem to be working on the app)
âLook, Iâm just saying that there is probably more to everything than what Batman told you. Maybe the now not dead Robin isnât as bad as you think.â The young woman in the eggplant purple suit said for the seventh time in the last fifteen minutes.
âAnd I am telling you he broke into Titan Tower and beat me with my own bow staff, Spoiler.â Tim sighed, looking over at his Ex, feeling the dull burn of his broken ribs as he breathed in deep. âI know that Batman isnât telling me everything about what happened. Neither is Nightwing or Agent A. I am in the dark as much as you. But really, I think there might just be a chance that he holds a teeny tiny little grudge against me.â
Steph shook her head at him. âI know he beat you and I know something went down with the Joker but!â She held up her hand to stop him from saying anything over her. ïżœïżœI have looked into every kill and action he has made. From start to finish. While he has been incredibly violent, and well, bloody and stuff, he has not killed an innocent person. Everyone he killed were violent drug dealers and pimps who were hurting the working girls. Crime has gone down in his territory in the last month.â
Tim gave her a pained look. He knew that Jason Todd as the Red Hood was technically doing a lot of good for Crime Alley, a place that has not had a stable crime lord or hand controlling it since Bruce was still a kid. And with Bruceâs own personal dislike of the area because of what happened to his parents and the GCPDâs unwillingness to investigate anything that happens there, Crime Alley often went unchecked and unnoticed by everyone. The Red Hood had strict rules he was willing to enforce and from what Tim had managed to overhear so far, the people who lived in Crime Alley felt a lot safer with the Red Hood around.
But that still does not change the fact that Jason was completely unstable and willing to murder nearly everyone who got in his way. The former Robin was willing to take that extra step to make his point. There had already been at least fifteen cases of torture reported to the GCPD that they know about.
(Though most of those cases were of convicted paedophiles and child molesters and honestly, Tim could not really fault the former Robin for what he did there; he too occasionally got the urge to do horrible things to predators as well, though he himself never acted on it.)
Red Hoodâs official death toll was almost at sixty with the possibility of the GCPD finding more bodies every day. Crime Alley might be safer for the people who live there, but that safety was brought with blood and death caused by Jasonâs hands. It was not the kind of safety that would last long. Not in Gotham anyway.
At least Jasonâs vendetta against the Batâs had died down though after whatever happened with the Joker that night nearly a month and a half ago. Bruce was not willing to share what had happened and the older man deleted the Cowl Cam footage before anyone else had a chance to see it. The Joker still lived, which was unfortunate in his own personal opinion. Yes, Tim fully believed in Bruceâs âsave everyone you canâ view of the world but if he was to be honest, Tim would not grieve if the Joker was to be violently murdered by someone. Because really, that cockroach needed to die and just be stopped permanently.
âWhile I do agree that the whole, you know, serial killer-antihero thing is working in Crime Alley, it still doesnât change the fact that he beat me up and tried to kill B and N. I really donât think he wants me to come into his territory and act like we are friends or something.â Tim kicked a stone off the ledge they were standing on. Yes, he was still holding a grudge. But who could blame him really? He got beaten up by his predecessor while said predecessor wore an absolutely horrid copy of the original, green panties, Robin suit.
âIâm not saying go out and act like his friend, Robin!â Steph waved her hands again. âI am saying maybe you could extend the olive branch to him? Because from what you have told me, the guy was murdered in a pretty traumatic way, woke up in his own grave, dug his way out and then was more or less prisoner of those crazy assassin dudes who are obsessed with immortality? Maybe if you and the other Batâs give him a chance to talk and stuff without the Joker and explosives involved you could actually get through to him. Everything that he has done to you guys, have you considered perhaps it was a cry for help?â
Tim sighed. âWhen you put it like that you make us sound like a bunch of dicks you know.â He shook his head and slumped his shoulders. She was right. But only to a point. Jasonâs actions at the Tower and his anger at the Bats could be seen as a cry for help, especially given what they did know about the trauma that Jason went through. âBut it still doesnât take away the point that he attacked me and the others and while he hasnât made another attempt against me, he has fought B and Nightwing recently.â
âHe probably fought them because they were the ones who entered his territory.â Steph pointed out. That was also true, if Jason had come into his territory he probably would have attacked the older teen without a second thought. He could see the former Robin doing the same if Bruce and Dick tried to enter Crime Alley. âI get it Tim, I really do. He hurt you and that sucks ass. I am not saying that you have to forgive him or anything. I am just saying maybe extend the olive branch to him. You were saying before that one the leads in one of your cases, the one with the underground alien tech, was in Crime Alley, right? Let him know that you are following up on a lead and that you will not cause any trouble for him.â
He gave a low hum of thought at that. Timâs original plan for that case was to go out in the day, skipping his afternoon study hall at school and going to look for the tech without his gear. It would have been risky but there would have been a better chance that he would not run into the Red Hood. There also would have been a greater chance that he would have been mugged because he looks like a rich white boy with money (which you know, he is), but Tim was confident he could have taken on anyone who attacked him.
But going and asking for permission? Tim had not even considered that an option at all. And honestly, why would he? Jason Todd had made it clear that he hated his âReplacementâ and that he wanted nothing to do with the Bats and Birds of Gotham. How would the older teen react? He wondered. Would he attack Tim? Or would he let him pass?
âHey, if you donât feel that you can be near him with without him attacking you then you should just bring Batgirl with you.â Steph grinned at him behind her Spoiler mask. Smiling always looked so strange behind her mask but one can definitely see the outline of it. Tim could not help but roll his eyes at her words though.
âI am not bringing Batgirl with me like some kind of bodyguard. I am a grown ass vigilante, I donât need a bodyguard.â He wasnât pouting. He wasnât. He was nearly fifteen, he could take care of himself without Batgirl babysitting him.
âOh, come on! Batgirl wouldnât mind! Would you, Batgirl?â Steph looked over his shoulder, causing him to spin around and glare at Cassandra, who was standing a few feet away. He had not noticed at all that she was there and there was a small shock of panic and fear that went through him at that thought. He hates it when people manage to get the drop on him. Cass was the second best in the Bat family at sneaking up on people, right after Bruce.
âWe need to put a bell on you before you give me a heart attack.â Tim groaned out, covering his face for a moment. At least Cass never went out of her way to purposely scare him, unlike Nightwing had when Tim was first starting out as Robin. His situational awareness has improved since he was twelve, thank god, and Nightwing was now not able to jump out of the celling and scare him anymore.
Cass gave him a small snort. âAm not Catwoman. Donât need a bell.â The smirk looked as strange behind Batgirlâs mask as it did Spoilerâs. âI would be happy to bodyguard for you.â
Tim rolled his eyes behind his domino mask. Steph and Cass becoming friends was a horrible idea. He never should have encouraged it. They were both terrible together. Steph always had something to say or do and Cass was always happy to follow her new friend around, enjoying being a teenager like she should. Steph encouraged Cass to step outside her comfort zone and explore being a teen and Cass was willing to do most of the things that Steph suggested.
They were good for each other. But not good for his sanity, seeing as they roped him into following whatever crazy stunt they had planned.
âI donât need a bodyguard.â He whined at them both. He didnât need Cass to hold his hand. He could talk to Jason. And if he gets his ass kicked then he could just blame Steph for the idea and spend a week with the Titans licking his wounds.
Not literally. That would be gross. Why is that phrase even a thing?
âAm bodyguard now. No take backs.â Cass nodded, sounding pleased with herself and he groaned in annoyance. He doesnât need Cass babying him. He is Robin! Terror of the Night and Batmanâs partner. He hated being babied by Cass and Dick. They always pulled the âI am the older sibling and you are the baby of the familyâ card on him. He canât wait until he could be the big brother. One day he will give the Robin suit up and then he can be the one babying someone else. âWhy is a bodyguard needed?â Cass asked, moving to stand next to Steph.
Before Tim had a chance to say anything, his purple menace of an Ex-Girlfriend spoke. âTim is going to go and ask the Red Hood if he could go into Crime Alley. We need you to bodyguard him because we donât know if the Red Hood is going to beat Tim up again or not.â
Tim shook his head. âNames, Spoiler. No names on the field.â He reminded her, closing his eyes in annoyance. Steph was bad when it came to remembering the âno names on the fieldâ rule now that she knows his name. If he didnât know better he would say that she is doing it out of spite because he didnât tell her it himself.
And Cass was either going to be all for being Timâs bodyguard or she is going to be against it and honestly, he wasnât sure which one he preferred.
On one hand, there are a lot of advantages to having Cass actually guard him while he spoke to Jason. Mostly all of them were that she could kick Jasonâs ass. It wouldnât matter how skilled Jason now is, Cass would win.
On the other hand, if she is against it she could go and tell Bruce which would end up with him benched and on the receiving end of a cold shoulder and disappointed glare for the next month or so. And he would probably have several new trackers placed on his person without his consent. Because B can occasionally forget to use his words and just say âI am worried about you, please be safeâ out loud.
Mind you, Bruce is still a lot better at emotions than Jack Drake. Timâs father only really did emotions in small, but over whelming bursts. Which means Tim usually gets a weekend or two of father-son like interactions and then it is several weeks of âwe exist in the same house but are mostly strangers to each otherâ. Which is always fun.
Cass said nothing for a few moments, her head tilting to the side slightly as she no doubt read Timâs body language and seeing his hesitance and his inner monologue. âWhatâs in Crime Alley?â She asked finally.
âA lead to one of my cases. The alien tech one that I have been working solo on.â Tim explained. Cass had not yet said yes or no and he was still very much undecided on which way he wanted her to choose.
âCome on! Big bad Batgirl can definitely take on the Red Hood if he tries to hurt our Baby Bird!â Steph wrapped an arm around Cassâs shoulders. âAnd you guys can extend an olive branch to the guy by being nice and you know, asking to be let into his territory.â
Cass hummed, which once again was not a yes or a no. She gently shook off Stephâs arm and looked at both Tim and Steph. âWhy extend the olive branch?â She asked. âHe is a murderer. He kills people and makes Batman sad, here.â She pointed to her chest, right above her heart.
Whelp, thatâs an understatement. Anything to do with Jason Todd hurt Bruce. When Tim was first starting out as Robin he could barely mention Jasonâs name without Bruce completely shutting down. It had gotten better over the years. Sometimes Bruce would mention Jason in passing or would say something about how the young boy used to be. But now that it was known that the Red Hood is Jason Todd, things have gone back to the way they were at the start and Tim did not know what to do other than avoid mentioning Jason or the Red Hood all together.
âSpoiler believes that there is more to the story than what B has said and that there we should hear Hood out and let him tell his side of the story.â Tim explained with another sigh. He wondered how many times he was going to end up sighing in this conversation and thought to himself that perhaps he should stop doing so already because ow, his ribs do not like it when he sighs at all. âShe also believes there is a chance that his behaviour and actions could have been a cry for help and that we should perhaps try and talk to him instead of you know, fighting at any given chance.â
âYep! That is some good summary skills there, Ex-Boyfriend of mine.â Steph nodded and looked at Cass expectedly. The mask made it impossible to tell what Cass was thinking. Not that it was easy for him to read Cassandra without the mask but it was slightly easier without the frankly unsettling mask staring at you in the eyes.
There is a good reason as to why he would never go for a full-face mask when he finally is ready to let go of being Robin. And that reason is that is that he is more than likely going to see his mask in the reflection of a window or something and then forget that it is his mask and then scream in fear. Which you know, would ruin the whole serious vigilante look he would be hoping for.
Thus, he will probably only stick to a domino. Or a cowl. But a cowl is slightly too Batman like and Tim did not want to be Batman. He would have to think on this more in-depth later.
âCry for help?â Cass tilted her head again. âYou believe that the killing is his way of crying for help?â If anyone else had said that, Tim would believe that they were being dismissive or sarcastic. But Cass just sounded curious.
âWell, yeah.â Steph waved her hands carelessly as she began to explain. âI met him a few times back when he was Robin. He was a great guy. He was kind. Sure, he was a little bit rougher than Nightwing was when dealing with scumbags and stuff but he always stuck around to make sure that the victims were okay. All of his interactions with you Bats so far look like lashing out and cries for help if you ask me. I mean, he dressed up in a frankly fucked up Robin costume and beat up Tim. He was apparently angry that there wasnât a statue of him in the Tower like there was for all the other dead heroes and whatever the hell happened with the Joker and Batman was wellâŠâ She trailed off.
Tim shrugged. âNo one knows what the hell happened with those three.â And it wasnât from lack of trying to find out either. Bruce was tight lipped about the whole thing and the Joker apparently only laughed when he was asked what happened. Tim suspected that Alfred knew what went down because the older man had been very stiff and cold towards Bruce for several weeks and has only just started to warm back up to him again.
âYou think that we should reach out to him?â Cass asked. âShow him we can offer help?â
Steph nodded enthusiastically at Cassâs attempt to clarify what they were telling her.
âI do think that! And I think that Wonder Boy here is the best person to do it.â She gently punched Timâs shoulder as she said this, making him rock back a little close to the edge. Steph may not be a meta but her punches, gentle or not, were stronger than she realised.
âWhy canât you do it? He hates me.â Tim pointed out. He really did not understand why she wanted him to do this. Yes, getting permission from the Red Hood could open up a professional relationship between them where they could actively avoid each other unless they needed to do something in the otherâs territory. And yes, he could definitely see Stephâs point about how Jasonâs actions did seem like a huge cry for help.
But Tim has already been beaten once by Jason and he honestly did not want to have another round with the older teen. The fight between them showed Tim just how much he was lacking in his training and he could not help but feel a deep, festering bitterness that he would never be as good as Jason was. As good as Dick was. It was a bitterness he was trying to push away and forget about but it never seemed to go away.
Tim didnât want to offer the older teen help and then accidentally drive him away because he could not get a hold of his own mental health issues. Issues that he needed to actually address sometime soon, least he turn into Bruce. Or a supervillain. Either one would be bad for his health in the long run.
Steph punched his shoulder again, this time harder; causing him to wince because ow, why, that hurts. âBecause Boy Blunder, you donât have any history at all with him. Except for, you know, him beating you. And you are more than likely a trigger for him because you are now Robin. But still, you at least donât have a history like Batman and Nightwing do. And he knows nothing about you as a person! He probably only knows what he has read about you from the assassins he was with!â
âAll the more reason why you should talk to him and not me! You are a stranger to him, not me! Spoiler is new and not actually connected to Batman and Robin. And if you havenât noticed I am Robin and something tells me he does not like that I am Robin.â Tim waved his hands in what he could best describe as âI am emphasizing my point and you are not listening to meâ. He learnt this gesture from Steph when they first became friends and has used it a lot over the years.
âLook Tim; think about it like this. You are brutally tortured and murdered. You wake up in your own grave, dig your way out and are taken in by evil assassins. You spend who knows how long with said assassins and find out you have been replaced by a younger, better model who comes from the complete opposite background as you do. Your attempt to kill your murderer doesnât work and your father figure is a dick. How do you feel?â Steph put her head in her hands and sighed before continuing.
âYou need to be the one who talks to him because you are a Bat and someone who probably makes him feel like he was replaced by a better, richer model and that you are everything that he isnât. If you talk to him, show him you are an actual person and not some cardboard cut-out of someone who he wasnât, then maybe you could actually get him to talk about what happened to him and help him! Yes, I am a stranger to him and while we could get along and stuff he is going to need someone who is a Bat to speak to him at some point andâŠâ She groaned. âI messed up my point. Tim, you are someone who is actually a part of all of this mess. I am not. Just, go and ask him for permission to enter his territory. If he says no then he says no. I will go and follow up that lead for you if that is the case. But please, try at least.â
Tim groaned again and looked over at Cass to see what she had to say about all of this.
âYou,â Cass pointed at Steph. âYou want Robin to talk to Red Hood. Because Red Hood is hurting. And needs help. Robin means a lot to Red Hood. It was his name, who he was before the Joker killed him. If Robin shows that he is notâŠâ She waved her hand in a very vague but Steph like manner. âIf Robin shows that he is not who Red Hood thought he was then the Red Hood will feel less like he is replaced or⊠unworthy? Red Hood was a good Robin. Now he is not good as the Red Hood. Bad things happened to the Red Hood, made him hard and angry. Extending olive branch might help.â
âYes! Thank you!â Steph let out a low breath. âWhy are you guys so good at summarising everything?â
âNightwing.â Both Tim and Cass said together. Dick had a habit of not only rambling but also talking fast and without breaks. A habit of both his ADHD and from being best friends with a Speedster. Anyone who works or is with Dick for long periods of time learns how to summarise what he says.
It is a handy trick for Tim to know, seeing as he is also best friends with a Speedster and Steph has a habit of rambling herself at times.
âSoâŠ?â Steph trailed off and Tim, though he said to himself that he wasnât going to do it because ow, sighed and completely ignored the pain in his chest.
âIf Batgirl is willing to bodyguard than I will go and ask Red Hood for permission into his territory.â Tim felt slightly defeated. Â He wanted to keep arguing that he really wasnât sure that this was a good idea for either Jason or himself but at the same time he knows he would feel crap if he said no because Stephâs points were more than likely all true and-
And he did not want to be a person who ignores someone else who could be in need of help because he was selfish.
Tim has been lucky. Since becoming Robin he has had a wonderful support network that he has used a lot over the years and would never trade for anything in the world. Jason does not have that. Or at least Tim was pretty sure that Jason does not have that.
âI will bodyguard. Will only interfere if you are attacked. I will stay in the shadows and away from sight.â Cass said. âWe do this tonight, on next patrol. It is late now. Time for bed soon.â
Cass was right, it was getting close to four am and Tim was due back into the Cave in less than half an hour. He was thankful that he did not have any classes until nine am because he wanted to have more than an hour sleep when he finally got back to his home.
âOh wow. Today went quicker than expected.â Steph rocked back on her heels. âI am stuck in class tomorrow night but I expect to have at least three texts telling me how it all went from you both. Got it?â
Tim rolled his eyes but nodded. âYes, yes. Three texts. If I get beat up you are so making me waffles.â He pulled her into a quick hug.
âWhatever, Ex-Boyfriend.â Steph pulled Cass into a hug of her own and then was grappling away with a careless wave.
âDo you think this is a good idea?â He asked Cassandra quietly now that they were alone on the ledge. Cass looked at him, the eyes on her mask stared directly into his own white out lenses.
âI think⊠that there is a possibility that the Red Hood is falling without a net. And that his lines may have been cut by accident. By Batman. By Robin.â She paused and looked up at the dark sky. âWe can offer him a new line. And a net. Falling without a net or line⊠It is not good. That mindset. You feel like you are flying, until you hit the ground.â
Tim flinched at that imagery. Jason had been hurt by the Joker and whatever the hell happened with his resurrection and the League of Assassins. The trauma alone from that would be enough to make enough the sanest man go a little wonky. But whatever happened with B that night with the JokerâŠ
Whatever happened might have taken away his line, like Cass said. But Tim was not overly convinced that this is a good idea. Cass must have read his hesitance because she spoke once more.
âHe needs to see you as a person, like Spoiler said. Not just as a costume. He needs to see not Robin but you.â She gestured to his body. âWhen he attacked you, he was looking for reason as to why you were supposed to be better than him. He wanted to see, prove himself and you, that he was the better one. Because if he was not the better one, than him being replaced would have been a good thing.â
Tim frowned at that. He had not thought of it that way. While he could see the attack against him in the Tower as being a cry for help like Steph kept saying, he did not think to look as to the reasons why it was a cry for help. Steph and Cass both were good at getting him to take a step back and look at the full details of the bigger picture. He would certainly be lost (and probably more emotionally stunted) without them.
Tim knows that he should not use them as a crutch for explaining emotions and details that he may have missed about basic human reactions, but Tim was not ashamed to say that he did not connect with other people well and often missed simple emotional matters that should have been obvious to him. According to the internet, this was probably because he missed out on many key interactions with his parents due to them constantly traveling around the world and leaving him home with a nanny who discouraged most emotional reactions he had. Because his nanny believed that âboys donât do emotions like girls and he should man up alreadyâ.
Tim really, really needed to get his mental health checked out sooner rather than later.
âOkay. Yeah, I see your point.â Tim conceded. âWhat about you? Are you going to try as well?â
Cass hummed and nodded after a moment. âYes. Will try with Spoiler and Oracle. Give some space between us and you. Keep him from feeling trapped.â
He hummed in agreement and gestured to the edge that they were standing on. âI am heading back to the Cave. I take it you are going back to the Clock Tower?â He asked, feeling drained. This whole conversation and everything about it made him feel like he had fought off an energy sucking monster. He wanted to go back to the Cave, get into his own clothes and head back to his own home. Or maybe just crash at the Manor. He will see what kind of mood B was in when he got to the Cave.
âBack to Clock Tower.â Cass nodded again. âWill Comm you tonight. Find where you and Hood are. Go to bed.â She reached up and ruffled his hair fondly and then flung herself of the ledge with grace that only Nightwing could copy. He watched her grapple her way towards the Clock Tower until she was gone from his sights.
His bike was down in the alleyway below him and it would take him only a short time to get to the Cave from his location. Tomorrow, well tonight really, was going to be interesting to say the least. He would like to say that the growing pit inside his stomach was just anticipation and not the low level of fear at the thought of speaking to Jason face to face.
The Red Hood was volatile, dangerous and had a grudge against the Bats. Tim had no idea how this was going to go and it frightened him. Jason Todd could simply say yes or no. Or he could just shoot Tim in the head and Batgirl or no Batgirl there would be no stopping him if he does.
Normally, being in that kind of situation was sort of exciting. Like a free fall off the top of the Wayne Enterprises tower. It was a rush that left a bubbling feeling in his chest that just screamed âI am alive!â but he did not feel that right now. He just felt a low level of fear bubbling away in his stomach, making him feel nauseous.
Jason made it clear that he did not like Tim. Did not want to be near him or see him. The beating he had taken was not the worst one he had suffered through. But it had hurt him. Hurt him badly because this was Jason Todd. Robin. The boy who Tim used to follow around with a camera around his neck hoping to see in action.
What do you say to a person that had once been one of your heroes after they beat the living shit out of you?
Tim did not want to think about it at all right now. He needed to get back to the Cave and back home before B and his dad start to worry. He would think about it before he goes onto patrol. Not now while his head was clouded. But later when he was rested and ready for the night.

Do you think all the kids think of each other as siblings? Pretty much none of them grew up or were in Bruce's care at significantly overlapping times, and I'm not even sure to what extent like Dick or Tim see Bruce as their father or just a paternal/authority figure
This is heavily dependent on continuity because the new 52 did frankly weird things to some of these relationships. This is mostly Post-Crisis and may mesh with Rebirth since theyâre drawing on Post-Crisis a bit more. Iâm not including Duke yet because Iâm not sure whatâs officially happening there and itâs pretty clear theyâre not yet at sibling stage there yet.Â
Also, for some of these guys, they didnât really interact at all so itâs all a bunch of assumptions.Â
To start with, even Damian, who has technically always had siblings, was raised by Talia for a significant period and didnât meet them until he was older and was indoctrinated to believe he was Bruceâs only child because heâs the only blood related one, which is horseshit because in Post-Crisis Bruce had spent about 20 years calling Jason his son and mourning him (DC was happy to make Bruce explicitly a father to Jason when he was dead, itâs actually quite interesting how it all changed with his return and the new 52. Ah, DC. I hate you.)Â
So, Damian started out a hard ânoâ and has only recently explicitly referred to Dick as his fatherâs son. They pretty clearly have a sibling relationship (with overlapping parent-child because of how they started out) but I donât think this extends to his other siblings necessarily, although I think his constant focus on proving himself better than all his siblings shows that on some level he acknowledges them. Despite the start, heâs most likely going to end up thinking of all of them as his siblings, but the timeline on each will probably end up different.Â
Cass is hard because DC keeps sidelining her. She started out very much fostered by Babs and Bruce wasnât really a factor for herâshe thought of him only as the Bat and didnât give two twigs about who Bruce Wayne was. By the time Bruce offered the adoption for her I think sheâd mostly established her relationships with the othersâbar Damian and Jason, really. I think she and Tim probably relate more as friends because they were friends before either became family to Bruce, but it might slide naturally towards siblings because whoâs to say that they didnât see that in each other when they were âjustâ friends? Dick was never really a friend and if he was anything it was something of a big brother mentor, so he could slide into that easily for her. I think Jason and Damian might slide into the role of âsiblingsâ easier simply because thatâs how she was introduced to them. Bruce took her to Jasonâs grave site and Damian was introduced as Bruceâs son, and they have no pre-existing relationships to complicate matters. Itâs just whether Cass goes from âBruceâs sonsâ to âmy brothersâ or not. I think she would, if DC would just stop sidelining her thanks.Â
Tim and Dick had a brotherly relationship long before anything legal happened. But I honestly donât see Tim seeing Bruce as his father. He was his mentor for a long time, and heâs definitely an important father figure and paternal influence in Timâs life, but Tim was heavily invested in that reconciliation with his dad, and it actually seemed to be going places before DC decided to make another orphan. He was also much older when Jack Drake died. When Tim thinks of âdadâ, itâs him, for better or worse. Tim clung to Bruce as a father after Bruceâs death, having lost another one so soon, but I just donât see him doing such a switch, considering how he consistently seemed to pick Jack. Iâm not saying Jack was a good father or anything, but yeah. I also donât think his clinging to Bruce as extending to the rest of Bruceâs kids. Dickâs his brother for sure. Cass has been a female friend for a while and might already have been something of a sister, but Jason and Damian? Way harder sell. I think if he and Damian see each other as brothers itâs not happily. Jason and TimâŠIâll get to.Â
Jason is without question Bruceâs son. He was, technically speaking, Bruceâs first son, as he was fully adopted in the 80s and after his death Bruce unequivocally called him by that when he spoke of him. Whatever retcons DC wants to do to push Damian as Bruceâs only kid, itâs whatever. Thereâs decades of history proving that wrong. Jason thinks of Bruce as his father, and was fairly happily adopted for a time. While Jason and Dick didnât have much in a way of a relationship, I think it was probably still framed as âbrothersâ, of a kind, for them, since both seemed to have a bit of jealousy about the other that comes across fairly typically as sibling-like. Itâs certainly not a significant relationship for either, but itâs there (Dick had a lot of regrets and Iâm fairly convinced Jason became Little Brother in his head due to guilt afterwards). They havenât really significantly interacted since his return until new 52/Rebirth really, there were some things in late Post-Crisis but MorrisonâŠAnyway, theyâre still quite coded in a big brother/little brother relationship, even when it was quite antagonistic. It was definitely not close though and could be argued. Jason and Damian have had very little interaction but they also have that weird thing with Talia. There has been some recent stuff in Rebirth with them. I think the Jason who came back wasnât prepared to consider anyone who came after him a sibling, but I think Convergence and the recent stuff in Rebirth show that those two are going to end up in a fairly typical sibling relationship. Itâs not there yet.Â
Jason and Cass havenât had any significant interactions in Post-Crisis (Cass was sidelined and Iâm not sure they ever met) and he probably didnât see her as much of anything at that point. If DC wasnât sidelining Cass I could see them clicking the fastest on Jasonâs end simply because he normally responds well to women generally anyway.Â
Jason and Tim is where I diverge from Fandom at large. I really donât care what the new 52 decided to do (literally they have a panel where Tim says flat out heâs not interacted with Jason much but still sees him as closest thing to a brother? Iâm still boggling), it made absolutely no sense and came with no resolution. Tim calling himself Red Robin wouldnât do crap to stop Jason âPettyâ Todd from seeing him as his replacement (because thatâs what Red Robin functionally was) and Tim just âgot overâ nearly being murdered by shrugging it off? No thanks. That and the complete erasure of Tim and Dickâs long history of their really strong (and important!) brotherly relationship killed me. I canât do it, fam.Â
LikeâŠif youâve read Lost Days and seen Jasonâs reaction to TimâŠIâm sorry but there is going to be some bitter resentment for a long, long time and I just do not see a fast resolution and happy family fun times there. Tim and Damian also have a longtime rivalry and I see the âDamian tried to kill himâ used a lot there, and Iâm not sure why that just gets dropped with Jason and Tim. Jason brutalized him. Damian was a 10 year old (I think that was his pre-retcon age at the time, it mightâve been the pre-pre-retcon 8 though) who attempted to murder him. Jason was older, bigger and couldâve done it. Iâm fairly sure Tim would remember that and not leap head first into a brotherly relationship there. Or any relationship.Â
Moving along, Dick. Dick sees them all as his siblings. He takes to a big brother mentor role well and heâs out and out called all of them his siblings before. I think Cass would be the only one itâs more doubtful but Iâm blaming DC and saying it would extend to her. His relationship with Bruce is much more complex. I think at this point, yes, Bruce is his father. I think it did not start out that way. Both of them went into it from a different placeâDick didnât want a replacement father, Bruce wasnât looking for a kid. But I think it changed naturally. Probably when Dick was about 16-17 and went through puberty and started to naturally grow up and out and Bruceâs reaction was to come down hard on that and be overbearing. Their epic fights from when Dick was about 17-18 until he was in this 20s were pretty intense and I think came from them both trying to re-navigate what they were to each other. Dick wasnât adopted until he was in his 20s and at that point it was a âgestureâ for what was already long established. I think they still relate on a different level than purely father and son, which is that favoritism that Jason points out, but I do think that they view each other as that, now. It was a much longer and harder road getting there.Â
Anyway this is my personal opinion based on mostly Post-Crisis and itâs comics so.Â

I LOVE your batdictionary series on AOOO. I has promt for you! I would like to see Damian cuddle Jason! They have an odd understanding but I want to see Jason be the only one that can hold Damian after a fight with Dick.
Thank you! â„ And you hit me in my weak spot, honestly. Especially because I think after Dick, Jason makes the most interesting sibling relationship with Damian. Anyway, here we go, I hope it was what you were looking for!
Read on AO3 if you prefer
Jason likes to think he moved on, that heâs, if not a better person, at least a different one. Less angry, less crazy, more in control of his emotions. It takes nights like this one to truly realize that he actually is better, because itâs on nights like this one that he remembers how it used to feel like. The fire in the stomach and the taste of blood on the lips, trembling hands and gritted teeth, every muscle of his body tensed in anger and itching for a violent release, the need to hurt surpassed only by the need of being hurt.
He hates it.
He hates that one fight with Bruce can still reduce him like this, break him and cut him as if he were still a child caught doing something wrong while knowing that it could cost him everything.
âBut the little I have now he couldnât take it away even if he wantedâ, he says to the gargoyle next to him. âSo jokeâs on him, you know?â
If the gargoyle knows, he doesnât tell, not to him and not to anyone else. Secrets between friends are important to him, Jasonâs learned. Itâs one of the reasons he likes this place so much. There are years worth of whispered secrets impressed into the ancient stones, scorch marks of old cigarettes and deep scratches from a lot of different knives, dark shadows that were once either bloodstains or spilled coke. And everything is covered in pigeon shit. Itâs sad and hilarious at the same time.
He leans back against the statue, hands crossed behind his head, feet resting against the railing, comfortable enough to close his eyes, uncomfortable enough to not fall asleep and towards a very ridiculous death.
And Gothamâs nights are never silent, or even quiet, but the noise of the streets itâs familiar, if not even welcomed to his ears, like a childhood lullaby. It happens every time he comes back, yet heâs still surprised at how it feels weird to call this city his home and at how itâs even weirder not to call it so. Itâs one of those things heâll probably never understand.
Like he doesnât understand what tips him off a hour or so later, when he opens his eyes to find himself almost face to face with his littlest brother dangling upside down from one of the gargoyleâs horns, cape fluttering around his head in the nightâs breeze and a little smirk on his face.
Jason blinks one, two, three times, and a few heartbeats go by before he reacts.
âYou know youâre not a real bat, right? Despite the fact you do look like oneâ, he says, because if he starts yelling at him then Damian will know that he actually succeeded in startling him, and Jasonâs not going to give him that satisfaction on his life.
Beside, heâs kinda impressed by how the kid managed to sneak on him like that.
Damian tries to look down on him but being on the wrong side of the up and down thing, he only manage to glower at him, and itâs not even as threatening as it usually is.
âFather is angry with youâ, the kid says, still scowling.
âGet down from thereâ, Jason retorts. âAnd tell me what else is new under the sun.â
âItâs nightâ, Damian points out, because he likes to be irritating like that. âAnd because of you heâs now crossed with me too.â
âWell, shitâ, Jason answers. âNow get down from there.â
Damian glances at him for a bit more, just to spite him, then he does this weird and almost painful to look backflip thing that has Nightwingâs trademark all over it. Jason watches the kid as he spins in the air for a moment, and then his feet land far too close to the edge, in what he knows itâs a perfect balance, and still itâs so unnerving to see him playing, if not with death, at least with some serious injury in such a careless way, so as soon as Robin comes in his reach he grabs him by his utility belt and pulls him down to sit next to him.
Structurally speaking, gargoyle statues are not designed for people to sit on them, but with a little of motivation Jason makes it work anyway. Damian being tiny helps a lot, still the kid is not that happy to end up squished against Jasonâs side.
âTodd, I hope you are aware that your fatness is highly inconvenient both for your choice of lifestyle and for my personâ, he complains, pushing not so lightly at him, and Jason elbows him in the ribs.
âFirst, keep your jealousy for my muscle mass in check, kidâ, he retorts. âSecond, this is my spot and youâre already occupying it illegally, so donât be rude or Iâll push you down the fucking tower.â
âWe both know you wouldnâtâ, Damian chirps, definitely unimpressed by the threat. âAnd this is not your spot, itâs a public building.â
âThe hell it isâ, Jason answers. âThis is Henry.â
Damian looks up at him in confusion.
âHenry?â
Jason points at Henry, Damian cranes his neck back to look at the gargoyle and then turns again towards him. He blinks, opens his mouth to say something - something nasty, knowing him - but then he seems to rethink it and he closes it again.
âYou are a weird individual, Toddâ, he states matter-of-factly after a moment, but he leaves it at that.
âPot, meet kettleâ, Jason snorts, then he looks him over from the corner of his eye. âYou wanna tell me what are you doing here?â
âI told you, Father is angry at me because of youâ, the kid answers, but if that was true by now heâd have come at Jason with a knife and a thirst for revenge and he wouldnât be sitting quietly next to him.
âI suppose you mean that he came home angry because of our fight and then yelled at you for no reason?â, he translates.
âHe kind of had a reasonâ, Damian admits reluctantly. âTonight I was supposed to be working on my moral qualities instead of my physical ones.â
âYou were groundedâ, Jason corrects with half a smile.
A grunt.
âIf you prefer.â
âI still donât see how it is my fault, brat.â
Damian glowers again and doesnât answer, so Jason dramatically throws his hands in the air.
âFine, fine, my apologies for having indisposed your dad so much that he actually forgot to spoil you as he usually doesâ, he scoffs, earning himself a pointy little elbows in a painful place between his ribs. He shoves at the kidâs head in retaliation, and blocks another punch aimed at his torso before they both give up.
Jason looks over at the kid again and sighs. When he speaks again heâs pretty sure that Henryâs going to laugh at him forever because of this.
âYou know you didnât exactly made things better between the both of you by sneaking off again after he already scolded you for it, right?â, he says anyway because somehow, somewhen and somewhere, without meaning it and definitely without wanting it, he discovered that he didnât entire loath the idea of being an older brother to Bruceâs kids. And sometimes that meant saying hypocritical shits like this. He wonders how Dick pulls it off so neatly.
Damian gives him the universal I donât care one bit about that sign, also known as a shrug. Which is kind of fair, since heâs, like, thirteen. Jason doesnât know what the hell he was expecting, to be honest.
âLook, kid, you know how Bruce isâ, he tries again.
Damian nods.
âYes, I know. Fatherâ, he starts slowly, measuring the words with great care. âCan be a fucking asshole sometimes.â
He lands it there just like this, and again, the only reaction Jasonâs capable of having right away is to blink. One, two, three times. He didnât misheard. A fucking asshole, thatâs what the kid said. And itâs not even the words themselves - because god bless Alfred who keeps trying his best to educate all of them, but the kid has a foul mouth almost as bad as Jasonâs - no, itâs the words and the combination of voice and accent, with all the right pauses and the syllables stretched out in all the right places.
He didnât copy Jasonâs voice - something he knows from Tim that heâs well capable of doing - yet itâs still very clear that Damianâs imitating him and thatâs not one bit funny. Already in mild panic he picks up the kid and sits him down on his lap without even thinking about the likely violent physical repercussions of his act.
âPlease, please, pleaseâ, he begs, grabbing him by his arms. âTell me you never said that in front of Alfred.â
Damian clicks his tongue at him and thereâs a spark of malevolent fun in his eyes while he drags the silence between them just to keep him on his toes.
âDamianâ, Jason growls in a warning tone.
âJasonâ, he mocks him.
A little shake, a little digging of big fingers into little shoulders.
âIâm not suicidal, Toddâ, Damian finally capitulates with a scoff.
Jason finally exhales.
âGood. Because that would be a murderâsuicide, you know? No way Alfred would let me live if he thinks that Iâve taught you to speak like that about your fatherâ, he pauses. âWhich I definitely didnât. Right?â
Damian shakes his head no but his lips curl in a smile that promises future blackmailing and the opening of a brand new category of annoying mockeries.
âYou are a little shitâ, Jason sighs dramatically, but he canât deny to be a little amused by the whole thing. Heâs even more amused when Damian squirms over his lap, trying to regain his sitting spot between Henryâs stone paws.
He stops him more to annoy him than anything else, locking his arms around his waist to make him stay in place. Damian punches and wriggles around, pushing at every bit of Jason he can reach, but once established that heâs not letting go without a serious fight Damian does the same thing he uses to do with Dick: he huffs and theatrically leans in his older brotherâs embrace, making a show of humoring him out of the graciousness of his heart. Jason laughs and rubs his stubbly cheek against Damianâs forehead, causing a new wave of protests and escape attempts.
âWhat were you and Father arguing about?â, Damian asks softly a few minutes later, once he quietens again.
He doesnât look at him and Jason doesnât know if he really wants an answer to his question or if heâs only asking him out of some sense of balance, since heâs not really grasped yet the concept of getting something without necessarily having to give something else back. Whatever his reasons are, Jason doesnât really want to go there again.
âIt doesnât matter, kidâ, which is kinda the truth. The subject of the argument is not the point, itâs the argument itself the problem. Raised voices and clenched fists, and a burning anger that should be long gone flaring back between them at the first spark. Heâs supposed to be better than this.
âHe told me about⊠Henry. Father, I meanâ, Damian says, his voice still low and thoughtful. âNot tonight, of course. And he didnât know you named it Henry, or he wouldâve sent you to Arkham a lot soonerâ, he teases, earning himself a painful pinch on his thigh. âBut he told me that this was your favorite place back when- when you were-â
âYeah, it wasâ, Jason deadpans, cutting him off just a little bit too abruptly, then he shoots his little brother a confused look. âWhy did you two even had a conversation about this place anyway? Have you been here before?â
He feels more than he sees Damian shrugging against him.
âI used it as an observation post a while back, during a case. It has a good visual on the cityâ, he explains. âFather looked⊠uncomfortable with my choice, so I inquired for details.â
âOhâ, Jason answers. And he leaves it at that because honest to god, he doesnât want to know anything else about Bruce and his weird, sudden attacks of feelings. Also heâs not a total idiot and Damianâs not as sneaky as he thinks he is.
Heâs wondering about calling the kid out on his failed attempt to play peacemaker (and for what reason heâd try to do something like that Jason canât even begin to imagine), but then something in one of Robinâs utility beltâs pockets pings and Damian wrestles again with Jasonâs hold to pull out his phone.
Jasonâs expecting angry voicemails or peremptory orders to come back home sent via text, instead the kid opens up a game and starts playing with some weirdly yellow viking midgets.
âSomeoneâs trying to attack my village and steal its resourcesâ, Damian explains while he quickly taps on the screen. âUnworthy fools.â
Jason blinks. Tonight Damian is full of surprises, apparently.
âUh-uh.â
âItâs good practice for strategy training and studying attack patterns.â
A light scoff.
âSure.â
Since Damian canât spare a hand to swat him with, he hits him in the shoulder with the back of his head.
âShut up, Hood.â
Jason grins and complies for all of two minutes.
âYou plan to spend the entire night up here playing video games?â, he asks then, eyes still focussed on the phone screen.
Again, Damianâs only answer is a shrug.
And, well. Itâs not like Jason had better things to do tonight, and he doesnât really mind the company. Henry doesnât either, probably. Beside, Damian is a warm and weirdly soft weight against him, and he smells like kevlar and children shampoo, just like home used to, long, long time ago. So he sighs and rests his chin on the top of Damianâs head.
âOkay then.â
*
Sitting between the huge gargoyleâs paws, holding his knees close to his chest and wrapped in the black Robinâs cape, Damian looks every bit like a little bird kicked out of the nest way too soon.
Jason wonders if thatâs how he looked like too, all those years ago, when Bruce came looking for him. He doesnât remember feeling that tiny, but heâs pretty sure Damian doesnât think as himself as tiny either, so itâs probably all adulthood wisdom.
He climbs up the old stones without having to pay too much attention to it, hands and feet automatically finding support points a little consumed by the years, but still as solid and reliable as ever.
He doesnât pauses until he reaches Damian, and even then he doesnât allow any silence wall between them. He scratches his knuckles against the kidâs head as a greeting, then gently pulls down the hood.
âSo, baby D, what did your dad do this time?â, he singsongs cheerfully, sitting down next to him. Again, not the simplest of the tasks, but Jasonâs getting the handle of it.
It doesnât take a genius to know that thereâs been a fight. You find a moping Robin perched on a roof and you can be sure as hell thereâs an angry Batman somewhere else. Itâs some kind of unwritten natural law.
Damian doesnât answer right away, but he reaches back and pulls the hood over his head again. Jason has to poke him a few times to irritate him enough to make him snap.
âHeâs a fucking assholeâ, the kid snarls, and this time heâs not imitating Jason, he says it in his own voice, and Jason smiles because he canât help it more than Damian can: it sounds so freaking cute.
âAnd what else is new under the sunâ, he agrees anyway. âAnd donât say âitâs nightâ because Iâll punch you.â
Damian doesnât take the bait, just burrows his head further into his shoulders.
âCâmon kid, Iâll throw in an ice cream if itâs something that heâs never done beforeâ, Jason tries again.
Still no answer.
âFine, okay. Whatever it is weâll just drop Henry over his head when he comes look for you. Iâm positive he deserves it anyway.â
âHe wonât look for me hereâ, Damian finally replies, bitter and angry. âHe wonât look for me anywhere. Heâs got better things to do now.â
âThatâs not true, kidâ, Jason offers weakly. âBeside, you said it yourself that Bruce knows about-â, he starts, and thatâs when it clicks. Damian didnât correct him when he said your dad but they were never talking about Bruce. And, well, shit.
Itâs not like he doesnât understand, because when it comes to love, Jason actually understands blurred lines more than anyone else. Fathers and brothers, children and partners, friends and lovers, itâs actually all very simple, just in a complicated kind of way.
He looks at Damian and thinks about Scarlet and Lian and Bizzarro and he decides that next time he sees him, Nightwingâs going to catch the hard part of Jasonâs helmet with his forehead. Heâs not gonna say anything, but heâll take a photo and send it to Damian, and that will probably be enough for both of them, since as vengeance go, bats and little bats are always down for it.
But thatâs for later. Right now he just pulls out his phone, unlocks it and taps on a little yellow icon.
And Damian must recognize the cheery jingle of the game right away, because he raises his head enough to peek out from under his hood almost immediately.
âIâm stuck at level fourâ, Jason explains, holding the phone for Damian to see. Itâs not the complete truth because heâs not stuck, he just didnât have the time to play it for a while, but Damian really doesnât need to know that. âWanna help?â
The kid considers the offer for a few seconds, then he makes grabby hands for the phone and Jason promptly pulls it out of his reach.
âYeah, sure, Iâm gonna leave my phone into my kid brotherâs unsupervised hands, thatâs totally gonna happenâ, he scoffs. âLook, kid, I may not be Oracle but I know a few things about data protection and how memes are born.â
That at least earns him a sideways impish grin.
âCome hereâ, Jason says, smiling back.
This time itâs a offer, pure and simple. One that Damian knows he can refuse without hurting anyoneâs feelings. One that he partially accepts anyway by leaning against Jasonâs side and not rejecting the arm promptly wrapped around his shoulder.
Jason lets him take his phone then, and watches as he expertly starts to move around the little vikings, practically destroying everything Jasonâs builded to remade the village according to his own schemes, loudly and quite rudely insulting his poor strategy skills in the meanwhile.
He buries his hand into Damianâs short hair and watches him play, throwing a few creative insults himself just to maintain the status quo and not to disappoint the kid, who clearly likes him better as a bad influence. And maybe itâs not much, but at least itâs something. Something little, but nice and honest, something that one day may become a cherished memory. Or not. Right now, Jason doesnât really care.
