"Yelena should date Kate!!" "No, Yelena should date Bucky!!" WRONG! Yelena should adopt 10 more dogs and become a crazy dog owner and never see a day of suffering again in her lifetime.

In the past week, I've come out as aroace to my family. Here's a couple thoughts I had on how that went
Almost immediately my sis was like "Like Yelena from Black Widow?" and my dad was like "Like Todd from Bojack Horseman?" And I was able to say' yes, like that' which help explained a lot of the basic stuff to them. It was the perfect example of how representation is important and introduces people to new identities/ideas that could become relevant in their lives. Idk I thought it was really interesting how they both immediately thought of fictional characters they had seen with that identity. Representation is important, people!
The second thing is after I had explained everything, my dad said, "So that narrows your dating pool quite a bit, doesn't it? You have to find someone who doesn't like sex or romance," and I said "....yesss..." bc I was thinking of qprs but I'm still not 100% sure he understands lol

It's all 'its not right to erase queer identities' right up until that identity is Aspec isn't it?

Marvel Pride Icons: Yelena Belova
I was going to save Yelena for tomorrow's Aroace Headcanon of the Day, but it wouldn't really count as she's canonically Aroace.
I don't really have anything else to say for this post. But all I'll say is that I plan on making more Pride icons using Marvel characters.
Please credit me if you plan on using these. Reblogs are disabled on this post to prevent Exclusionists, Aphobes, and other people from my DNI list from interacting with me. I'll block anyone who thinks that Yelena isn't Aroace and delete any asks from people saying that she's not Aroace.
If you would like to submit a request, please read my pinned post before making a request.

I just saw a leak say Bucky and yelena will have a romantic subplot. No. We don’t want that. You can’t erase aroace rep and say that women are interchangeable with each other.
How Natasha and yelena view romance and sex is very different. For nat that’s something that matters a lot to her and is a part of her central story. Yelena has never shown any interest in it. She’s said that she isn’t interested in it.
Natasha and Yelena are separate characters and treat them that way.
Also not to mention they literally set up for Bucky to get with Sarah in fatws.

can we just all collectively agree that it is okay for aroace characters not to date or have sex if they clearly show no interest in it or repulsion?
can we respect that and not ship them?
or are yall too deep into amatonormativity…???

It's actually really disheartening how little people care about aroace representation and how readily they erase it, especially when that seeps into the media canon itself.

"you all make all monotone characters aroace" is so fucking stupid. the reason so many "monotone" characters get this headcanon is because of their lack of interest in sex and or romance, not because they act cold or indifferent to other people.
maybe if the media showed us more bubbly happy go lucky characters, or whatever, with these lack of interests, then we wouldn't have to be dealing with this. maybe that's just going to keep happening until we are finally accepted and understood better in media.
it's not about personality. we don't get to choose the outright nature/personality/physical appearance of the aro/ace coded characters we come across. it's about whether or not we see our ace/aro selves in these characters. it's about whether or not this character is showing signs of sexual attraction or lack thereof, or signs of romantic attraction or lack thereof.
don't forget, so many of these characters are guarded from trauma (and are not actually monotone or two-dimensional) and we don't get to see them open up because the people who write them don't always know how to make them happy without bringing a love interest into the plot.
AND YEAH, aro/ace people are guarded in real life too because we are constantly being told that we're not real, that our identity isn't valid, or that we're rude and heartless and the bad kind of weird and annoying and childish and that we don't know what we're talking about. we get told our opinions don't matter. we get harassed. we get forced on blind dates. we get told we need to be raped. we are told our lives are sad/depressing. we are bombarded with heteronormativity and amatonormativity every waking moment. we're told we're going to die alone and that we're not as important because we're not desirable in the same way others are. the list goes on and on and on.
we are made to feel less desirable, less than human, and feeling like that can lead to being closed off, so YEAH, fuck off to anyone who hates the stereotype. it can be very relatable but is not the end all, and it is not our fault if a character as such, or not, doesn't come off outwardly sexual or romantic.
seriously, tag your aro/ace headcanon characters and your canon characters. maybe they all have the same appearance, or personality but is that really our fault if that's all the media has allowed us? no, it's not, and i doubt we're as full as the same types of characters as we're told we are. or, hell, maybe we are and haters gonna hate us because we and our aspec coded babes don't want to be their friend, let alone anything else.

I don't think words can describe how important Gwen Poole coming out as aro is for the aromantic community. We can fight all day long about what was hinted and implied and how we should've seen this coming but at the end of the day,,, she's the first person to definitively say she's aromantic in ANY superhero comic (according to Wikipedia). And that means something.
And the way people are willing to brush that aside and insist that another writer will change that continue assigning allo identities to her also means something.
Have your headcanons, there's nothing I can do to stop anyone, but erasure is erasure.
