siren!togame x sailor!reader.
gender netural reader as always. slight mention of choji if you squint. thinking about our siren wbrk talk with mari again so have this... i forgot i wrote this during my tumblr break LMAO
Tumblr media
when you first meet the siren with emerald eyes and silky hair, you find yourself too immersed in his captivating looks that you forget why youve been staring in the first place.
he is an odd one, not a man, but one.
it's not everyday for people in your line of... business to be running into his kind, although there has been a suspicious increase in their activity, but this one piques your interest entirely and completely.
recent news about a blond siren causing havoc, all fangs and feral, already off your mind, you approach the odd one on a day neither too cloudy nor sunny- just ideal, just perfect.
pleas and concerns your crew has voiced already gone, falling on deaf ears, you approach the creature, not captivated, nor enhanced-- that is, if you dont count fascination with curiosity as a subclass of that.
you're not fazed by his lack of surprise, but make a mental note when you notice he's not the talkative type.
his kind is bold, loud and clear, showing themselves off, "hello world, i am here, see me and feed me." or that's what the widely accepted opinion of them is.
as you draw closer, you spot he is not alone on the broad rocks and rubbles. seals who exchange equally confused gazes with one another stare at you and him, taking his stance as no danger posing.
it feels weird, to have finally reached the object of your goals for the past months. long days and nights of spotting this siren that is not like any other and now here you are, face to face with him. no longer just exchanged glances by the small window of your cabin that you were certain you made up in your head.
resting his chest against his palm, he wears a smug yet gentle expression. you're unsure if it's the eyes that make it genuine or the curled up corner of his mouth that makes it cocky.
by the time you'll know him as togame and more than just an 'odd one out' of his species, it won't take you many conversations, but it'll take a long time. such as the fate of being a feeble human on a ship and a feared creature of the sea.
getting onto the edge of the rock, you take one step further, resting your elbow there, mirroring his position as you rest your chin against your fist.
"so, what has gotten a beast like you tied down to a bunch of rocks? tired of us already?"
you're odd, togame thinks. normally sailors detest his species- if they can get over their fear. anyone within their peak form would be killing for this opportunity, to capture one, get years long revenge and so on.
instead, you approach him like a sailor to a maiden back on land, after eyeing her up all night, paying for her drinks across the pub...
smiling coyly, you wait, your gaze never wavering, ignoring the odd colors in the back and the confused sounds the seals make.
"maybe it's because i've simply have something better to do." he says and you halt, "got my crew right here." he follows and watches as your smile drops, confusion taking over.
he counts, 1, 2, 3... 10 seconds it takes for your eyes to dart between the seals behind him and Togame himself- still confused, until your eyes land on shells and torn off pieces of coral spread on a flatter rock between all of them.
a game?.. you wonder, tossing what he said to the side for now, how it implies they attack simply because they're bored.
well, certainly the blond one is- at least from what you've seen, all his attacks on ships, he seems to be living off the thrill of it, not caring as long as he swims away freely at the end of the day.
"A game, then." you voice your guess, gathering your initial confidence. or maybe it's lack of care, Togame isn't sure of it just yet.
"hmmh" he hums in agreement, as he turns to exchange looks with the seals. "care to join? we can teach."
the whole exchange from start to finish feels off. distant in a corner with no one knowing your exact location- all you've learned so far, even if he said those intentionally or not, and you swear those seals are an endangered species in these waters- last seen at least a century ago.
so they come out just for him? or for all of them? the questions swarm your head, you don't even realize you've been leaning further and further, slowly, your expressions long gone, face now blank, try to decide on a dominating emotion to display.
he seems to take this as confusion and giggles. breaking his pose, he leans towards your direction and holds out his hand "no need to be afraid now, we don't bite."
and within these words alone, you know it deep down, simply and with your entire heart that he means it- no siren voice involved, no odd feelings rising.
maybe that's how they truly lure their victims. no magic voice behind it but simply their charms. yet you are ready to take your chances.
taking another step further, you take his hand and let him pull you up to the rock he's residing on, genuinely, innocently, to play a game.

A Wonderland Of Yanderes
Tumblr media
World Building is here Part 2
It all started with that class.
The final class for the first week of the first semester. After all the chaos of coming to Twisted Wonderland, of being thrown into a world you don’t understand, a quiet weekend to start finding a way back is something you’ve been awaiting.
The classes here were chaotic but fun, and even interesting as a human from a world without any magic.
Making potions that could do so many different things in Alchemy. Speaking with animals or a cat that can't talk like Grim in Animal Languages. Riding broomsticks in Phys Ed. Even the boring classes like Magical History, learning of this world full of wonder and mystery, and Arithmancy, math was boring, but it was fun to learn that it’s the same in this world.
But out of all the classes this was the weirdest one of all.
It was called The Art of Ensnaring Hearts. About ‘darling control and protection’. It’s a weird sounding class, but even weirder, it’s a mandatory subject for all first years, which seems weird for what sounds like an elective. Still it’s just odd, not anything too weird.
The name is nothing that you’ve seen in any fantasy book or tv show in your world. But by now, you knew weird being dropped head first into an unknown world. By now anything new and weird should have been expected, understood, brushed aside as something to accept and move on.
So here you were sitting between Ace and Deuce in the lecture, Grim fast asleep on your lap, waiting for class you knew nothing about.
“I can’t believe they’re making us take this class.” Ace complains.
“Stop complaining Ace. It’s a really important class!” Deuce objects.
Ace whined his butt off the whole way here, complaining about how stupid it was that they had to attend it. Deuce on the other hand, was incredibly enthusiastic and you are completely in the dark for what this class is even about.
Ace shrugs, “Still, my folks and brother taught me all about this stuff. It’s a waste of time.”
“Not everyone has parents or siblings who can teach them about darlings, Ace.”
“Nothing personal Juice, but this class is going to be as boring as Magical History.”
“Well, if you know so much, what exactly is this class about?” You joke and they both look at you like you’ve grown a second head. "What?" you say, now uneasy.
 “You don’t know?” Ace asks.
“What part about ‘I’m from another world’ keeps slipping your minds?” Your attempt at a joke falls flat, as they look at you in incredulity.
Deuce practically reels back in surprise, “N-No it’s just that it's so normal here. You don’t know what darlings are?”
You shake your head, “No, not really.”
A crack of a whip onto the blackboard calls your attention to Professor Crewel, "Alright pups, I have to do this every year so let's get this out of the way now. This class will provide you with any and every method, skill and technique to find, capture and control your future darlings, including evading the law in your respective homelands." Now, you're confused, why exactly is a school teaching students how to break the law?
"As you know Sage Island makes special accommodations for NRC and RSA students, all acts that may be forbidden in any of your hometowns, with the exception of Darling murder, will be pardoned and forgiven. In the case of a family investigation, the school will stage an accident so please do not butcher them beyond repair." No words or sounds slip from your lips, with you stunned silent in pure horror.
What pools in your stomach is hot dread mixed with cold fear. Just what exactly is this world? Murder can be excused here? It can be covered up, with only a slap on the wrist. You need some explanations and you need them now.
A student raises a hand, "Professor?"
"Yes, pup?"
"Why are there no darlings enrolled in Night Raven?"
"One too many murders on campus. A few too many mutts ran around unneutered and decided to draw blood." You smother your gasp a few seconds too late, as more than a third of the room turn to you, confused.
"Something wrong, pup?" Crewel raises an eyebrow at you. His eyes drill into your soul, inspecting, calculating.
"N-Nothing! I'm fine. Perfectly fine." Crewel doesn't push you on the subject, returning to his lecture.
You lean back in your seat, and the cold sweat on your body makes you shiver. Right now, you'll bite your tongue and hold back your horror.
You need to see Crowley, as soon as possible.

"Don't Stop Me Now" — Five situations where yandere Five loses it
Tumblr media
cw(s): yandere themes, non-descriptive self harm, mention of suicide and domestic violence
1 — someone ✗ something is trying to harm you
Pretty straightforward.
This is the numero uno that comes along with every yandere.
Five grew up with an abusive, emotionally absent father figure. He was pushed to be the best, the most successful of his siblings, just for an ounce of affection. He was isolated for so many years with nothing more than a department store doll. He has had to put away whatever loose morals he had to slave away in The Comission.
Then you come along and brighten up his life. No, you do more than that. You perfect it.
Then someone comes and tries to strip that away from him?
It's safe to say you've only seen that crazed look in his eyes when you're in danger. He doesn't care about whatever mission, the greater good, or whatever the fuck when you may end up being killed. He's swift and merciless, just as he was taught.
After he makes sure you are okay, he'll hold you to his chest for what feels like forever. He just needs to become secure again in the fact you are alive. You are here with him right now. It helps ground him so he doesn't end up going about on a killing spree.
Yes. That has happened one too many times.
Klaus now knows not to joke about random people flirting with you. Their spirits won't stop harassing him. In his defense, how was he supposed to know Five would just go out and slowly torture them before letting them waste away into death? Klaus didn't think Five was that unhinged. He knows better now.
2 — you harm yourself (in any way)
He keeps an observant eye on you, so it would be a miracle if you managed to accomplish anything along those lines.
Two words. no. more.
He has the internal breakdown. He's just standing there and staring at you. There are tears in his eyes. He wants to yell, to freak out, but his voice cracks far too much when he tries to reprimand you.
No. Just no.
That's the only word that encapsulates how he feels.
He is not going to allow you to hold any sharp objects. He makes sure you have no contact with Diego. Five is paranoid and suspects that Diego had something to do with this. Somehow.
You are more strictly monitored.
He has an entire list of mental and physical health questions he asks you each morning. If you tell him to leave you alone or that you are tired, there's about a seventy percent chance that he'll go off. It would definitely be in a Five way.
He'd be teleporting around you and sputtering out statistics and caring yet demeaning words.
3 — keeping him out of the loop
Five is meticulous.
When you keep him out of the loop—which could mean not saying good morning to him or hiding a romantic relationship—he feels so powerless again. He needs to know what is going on with you so he can protect you if need be.
Don't even try to argue with him.
He's older than you, so he knows best.
He has so much more experience at anything and everything. He can solve all of your problems if you just let him in.
Does that mean he will do the same in return? No.
There's no reason for you to know what he is doing at any point of the day. You don't need to worry your pretty little head about it. Aka, he's doing things that are morally gray at best and human rights violations at... that's still one of the better cases.
Just tell him. Or he'll force it out of you.
4 — things being out of his control
This ties in with every other scenario.
He needs to be in control.
Everything has to be perfect.
If one thing goes wrong, then you may slip through his fingers.
That isn't allowed to happen. It can't.
It eats away at him at night to think something could happen that he can't control.
The apocalypse happened, and he had to spend decades just accepting that fact. Until there was a chance he could change it.
Now he has to. He has to change, sort, and neatly put away everything. No speck of dust is out of place. If it is, then he'll end up pushing himself into fixing it, to the point of exhaustion or death—whichever comes first.
5 — escaping successfully
The only time there is a plausible chance he will resort to physical violence.
Why, why, why, why, why, why!?
How could he be so idiotic? How did you do it? Who helped you?
Whoever helped you is going to die if they haven't already killed themselves because they know Five is going to be coming after them.
He will act nonchalant, like he is in control, when he finally finds you once again. He'll tease, poke, and prod at your fear, like a ringmaster taming their lion. A part of this act is the truth. He has you back, and now everything can go back to how it was. The other part of him is still devastated and wants to curl up in your lap and just be safe there.
Yandere Five: fragile—handle with care.

i am convinced that human evolution and development was centered around the basic up-grade from "i steal your resources" to "i steal your behaviors and concepts"
We got clever enough and we just started copying absolutely everything we observed just because now we could figure out how to copy concepts and things that other animals were doing
see that squirrel hoarding acorns for the winter? we can do that. okay now how do we make these acorns edible, cause they are poisonous to a number of animals and we don't do great with them either. What if you put them in the fire? or just on hot coals? what if you put them in water on hot coals and boil them? Oh if you soak them in cold water for 24 hours and maybe change the water a couple times you can totally eat them? YOINK storing acorns for winter is our idea now.
or, you ever seen a weaver bird do it's thing? if not i'll give you one guess what they do
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or how about the tailor bird that uses spider silk to stitch the edges of a big leaf together to make a nest in
Tumblr media
or sometimes they'll stitch a bunch of leaves into a little cup for a nest
Tumblr media
like i'm not trying to downplay how clever it is to be the first humans to weave or sew, and indeed, being the first person to weave that anyone knew about probably happened many times throughout human existence but my conceit is that most if not all of those times was a human seeing something in nature that was basically weaving and going "i'ma do that, and get real good at it - i'ma take that concept and really make it mine"
like it wouldn't surprise me if humans got dogs because we saw how ravens were treating wolves and went "shit yeah, great idea - YOINK that's my idea now."
most of the things that we think of as special human skill or behavior can actually be found elsewhere throughout nature -- all over there are animals using tools, farming, ranching, building, etc.
my favorite primate behavioralist anecdote is a group of people studying tool use in chimps were spending their days in the bush logging the use of twigs to catch termites, and over the campfire at night they're like "it's so boring i wish they'd do something more impressive than this completely basic tool skill."
and one of them was like "actually... how do we know its not a difficult skill? has anyone tried to use a twig to catch termites and see?" and so the next day, like good little scientists, they went out and recorded their attempts at catching termites with twigs.
And lo and behold out of the whole group and all their attempts that day, only, like, a single termite was caught by a human, mostly by chance. Suddenly the whole situation flipped - they'd been thinking of it as basic unskilled tool use, but actually the chimps knew how to do something that none of them could easily figure out on their own - or even together as a group!
y'all, they had to go back to watching the chimps do it to figure out how. Think about that. University degrees, scientific minds, educated people... and they had to be taught how by the chimps.
It turns out there's a reason that young chimps will spend like a year closely studying how an adult is fishing for termites. You gotta select the right kind of twig or leaf stem, maybe you fray the end like a paint brush depending on particulars, you gotta have just the right poking and little shaking technique to provoke the termites into biting the twig, it's a whole thing. There's even regional/cultural differences in the general approach to termite fishing that are distinct between groups that live in different areas.
Now, wild chimps have been observed using objects as tools to fashion crude spears for hunting (it's the mothers doing it by the way, and slowly some of their kids have been growing up doing it, which will probably result in refinements and developments eventually.
ants do both farming and ranching. For real. Some species of ant grow a fungus they eat AND it's a domesticated fungus, like our corn, it can't actually reproduce and survive in the wild without the ants farming it. They maintain its growing conditions and feed it leaf litter mulch, and the fungus produces some kind of ant food idk i forget the details about that. But that's farming. They are farming a domesticated mushroom, basically. And other species of ant will maintain a herd of aphids; they'll move them from grazing area to grazing area, and protect them from predators, and they "milk" them for a liquid food substance and also every now and then they straight up eat one. That's ranching.
beavers sometimes have muskrat... tenants? pets? The muskrats low key pay rent by changing out the reed bedding they all use, and they live in the beaver's lodge with them and eat some of the food. So. idk
Some Tarantulas keep frogs as pets
anyway my point is, i think the true human skill that sets us apart is our ability deconstruct and reconstruct anything we see into something that is for us. Oh, you eat that? Now WE eat that. You have the perfect teeth to drill little holes in specific tree trunks to let the sap ooze out and eat it because it's high in sugar? We don't have those teeth but we're gonna do that now and if we can't figure out a tool that's as good as your teeth at it, watch out, because we will absolutely just also steal your fuckin teeth.

🔹1. Watching from afar
Tumblr media
synopsis- Break-up of the it couple of the university was surely shocking for everyone but yu jimin didn't care. She knew it was right to do as she was in love with somebody else. Precisely her ex's bestfriend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Yu Jimin is unreal.”
“She is probably the most gorgeous woman ever like have you seen her.”
“And so talented as well. This is the third time she has won the gold for our uni in swimming. God really has his favourites, isn't it?”
You roamed around the campus making your way towards your lockers while yu jimin praise entered your ears. It wasn’t really surprising. Yu Jimin surely was one of a kind. Not only insanely beautiful but extremely talented and astoundingly kind and gentle despite her infamous status as an it girl with a rbf.
Of course everyone liked her. No doubt everyone dreamt to be somehow related to her. As a friend or something more. She is like some untouchable prize. Desired by all but won by none. Maybe won by one. Your bestfriend Ryujin.
You remember it quite vivdly how ryujin was literally jumping with happiness when she had told you last year during Christmas how she finally ‘bagged yu jimin’. To be honest, you hated how she worded it. Bagged yu jimin like she isn’t a human but some object. But you stayed quiet. You kept quiet because your bestfriend finally got the girl she was courting for past 8 months.
Who were you lying to?
You kept quiet because you were heartbroken. You were heartbroken because your bestfriend got the girl you were in love with since high school. The same girl you had loved for five fucking years. Maybe if you had built some courage and confessed to her. Maybe it would have been you and not Ryujin.
Maybe…..
“Hey! You are here. I was searching for you all around the campus.”
Coming out of your thoughts, you looked at Ryujin , being all sweaty and that smirk of hers plastered on her lips as usual.
“What is it?” You asked nonchalantly.
“I have decided to court jimin again.”
Your eyes, void with any emotions, met hers. You knew it was of no use. Ryujin was just wasting her time on someone who clearly didn’t care about her anymore.
You remember meeting a crying Ryujin 3 months later after her confession on Christmas. That was probably the first time you had seen Ryujin crying and not with the usual grin she always greets you with. You don’t remember all the details but you do remember Ryujin telling you how Jimin dumped her between her cries. You would be lying if you’d say you weren’t shocked.
Your bestfriend and Jimin were the it couple of the university. Everyone adored them, saying how they were meant to be together one day. How they were just the best for each other. It did break your heart a bit but they weren’t actually wrong. Captain of the volleyball team and Captain of the swimming team together was definitely a treat.
So it was surely shocking how they broke up just after 3 months of dating. But the most appalling was the reason of their break up.
YU JIMIN WAS IN LOVE WITH SOMEBODY ELSE!!!
Just like everyone, you were also shocked. Was there really someone better than Ryujin? Only jimin could answer that. She was not someone stupid to leave Ryujin only for a passing crush. It must be serious to her.
You didn’t exactly knew much about Jimin. Despite being in the same class as her in high school and meeting her few times when Ryujin dragged you along with her on her dates with jimin, you didn’t really had a conversation with her.
Like Jimin , Ryujin was extremely popular among students. You weren’t any different from them. While Ryujin was popular for her charming and flirty self, you were famous for your godly looks and unapproachable aura. Being the vice-captain of volleyball, your sporty and athletic self was popular as well. Some admired while some despised how self-confident you were. Desired by both men and women, you definitely were a eye-candy.
But it was also a mystery how your self- confidence betrayed you everytime you were near yu jimin. The power she had over you was another mystery in itself.
You remember tagging along with Ryujin to one of her dates with Jimin. Ryujin had told you Jimin wanted to meet you. You obviously did not believe her. You also recall Jimin’s surprised stance when she saw you beside Ryujin. As if she was not expecting you to show up there.
Your eyes met her surprised ones carrying along emotions you couldn’t decipher. She definitely did not wanted you there. You cursed Ryujin internally.
Despite not wanting you at the date or as you believed, Jimin ,being the kind woman she is, tried to strike a conversation with you multiple times that day , earning only hums and uninterested mumbles from you.
If she did not hated you before, she certainly despised you now.
“What do you think?”
“About what?” You replied to Ryujin after taking a bite from your food while sitting beside her in university’s cafeteria.
“About courting jimin again dummy.” Ryujin replied.
“I don’t know what to say. Jimin broke up with you and clearly doesn’t care about you anymore. I guess you should let her go now Ryujin.”
“You are my bestfriend. Shouldn’t you be taking my side?”
“That’s what I am doing. I don’t want you to get hurt and cry like that again. You ruined my favourite hoodie that day with your tears and snot.”
“Shut- up jackass. Don’t ever mention that day again.” Ryujin grumbled lowly earning a chuckle from you.
“Anyways I have decided. Come-on do you really believe that being in love with somebody else thing. She clearly lied or just got nervous about our relationship. Like name someone better than me who have the charm and looks to steal Jimin’s heart.
“Y/n”
You looked behind at the source of voice calling your name.
You noticed your coach standing at a distance , motioning with her forefinger to meet her at the volleyball court.
“Just a minute coach.” You shouted and immediately stood up while carrying your belongings.
“I don’t agree with what you are planning to do Ryu but please take of yourself and make sure not to hurt you and Jimin in the process.”
Ryujin nodded at your words frivolously making you sigh.
“Alright see you later.” You bid her bye and made your way towards the court when you noticed Yu Jimin looking as beautiful as ever. You felt your heart skipping a beat when you heard her laugh over something Aeri, her bestfriend said.
Composing yourself, you took your eyes off her and left the cafeteria , not noticing a certain someone’s gaze on your retreating figure, filled with longing and love.
“When do you plan to confess your feelings to her or are you just going to spend all your life watching her from afar?”
Jimin looked at Aeri flashing a hurtful smile to her.
“She doesn’t feel the same Aeri.”

hello llama
i have been thinking and headcanoning about vampire bad sanses lately, so i was curious if you have any thoughts about or interest in vampires of the nightmare and crew variety? (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)
"do i have interest in vampires", he asks
ok, i will share my extensive vampire brainrot. but in return..... you have to write that vampire fic.... oooOOooO look into my eyes you know you want to write it ooOoOooo 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
I very much like the idea of Nightmare's castle being Castlevania-style. Lots of spooky architecture, lots of ancient magical passages that haven't been seen in centuries.
Horror can be summed up in one word. Bloodlust. There's a constant hunger inside him he can't ever seem to fill, driving him almost to the point of madness. He is more beast than man. When he smells or tastes blood, he loses control of himself, becoming little more than a starving wild animal - his capability for slaughter is limited only by his appetite. So unless Nightmare requires it, he generally abstains from blood. He doesn't like losing himself so entirely.
Something about you makes him forget his hunger. Is it your voice? Your scent? He has no idea, but oh, it feels good to feel whole. When you're around it's as if he'll never be hungry again... he follows you like a dog, grinning intensely every time you look at him. This is one hound that can't be shaken.
Despite his 'condition', he finds a lot of solace in cooking. Nothing will give him the same drug-like rush as blood but human food is nonetheless warm and filling and distracts him momentarily from the emptiness. He enjoys the process of making it, too, doing something with his hands. Let him cook for you, please? Watching you eat brings him vicarious joy.
Dust's backstory is one of legend. Something resembling a story can be spun from the loose whispers. A vampire invaded his peaceful isolated village hundreds of years ago, intending to turn the helpless populace into enslaved vampires. Dust, the first to be bitten, turned and slaughtered them all himself - and despite being a vampire for barely a week, the equivalent of a stumbling newborn, he killed the centuries-old invading vampire in single combat.
No one's quite sure why he's joined Nightmare. Perhaps Nightmare was keen to take this uniquely violent creature under his wing, and Dust just didn't really care where the wind took him. Or perhaps he has some other motive, hidden beneath that silent face. Who knows.
... Dust might be quiet, but it's obvious he's fixated on you. Which is a big deal. This is a creature who hasn't mustered a second thought for anything but blood for decades; but somehow, you've excited him. He's very clearly interested in you, silently watching your every move, listening intently to every word you say. Too bad he's not much for conversation.
Killer's backstory, on the other hand, is shrouded entirely in mystery. No one knows where he came from, who he is, or what he's done. He simply appeared one day - right within the coveted inner circle of Nightmare himself. He's the Night King's most trusted weapon, and the closest thing he has to a friend.
Killer seems very clear about what he wants. He thinks you're adorable, and he says you'd make such a pretty vampire. He talks (at length) about how much he wants to bite you, and how if it were up to him you'd already be one of them. A lot of his flirting involves calling you things like sweet treat and honeyblood. However... despite all the taunting, all the talk of seeing you as food, Killer is the one in the castle who treats you with the most respect. The others seem to see you as an object, a cute toy, something to squish and own. Killer talks to you like you're a real person. You can't help but like him for it.
Nightmare's inferiority complex has driven him to declare himself the king of the vampires. No one contests - Nightmare is royalty by blood, and vampires place a lot of emphasis on blood. But even if he wasn't, Nightmare frequently murders those who won't bend the knee. Plenty of powerful vampires have fallen embarrassingly fast at his hand.
... Nightmare's goal is to make you agree to be his spouse. A pretty little human partner would be excellent for his image. It would not only demonstrate his incredible self control as such an ancient vampire (not to mention his control over his warriors), but it would also show that his power is so great he doesn't need to strike a political marriage with another powerful vampire. It might also convince some of the pesky rebellious human groups to settle down.
His pride means that he won't force you. Not yet, at least. He likes to think he can seduce you. He's a royal vampire, after all, and you're just a simple human - isn't it only a matter of time?
... But it seems like, as time goes on... he's the one falling.

my memories are floating away.
the beautiful times are leaving me, stealing you away.
this isn't the end ...remember.
i will gladly stay by your side.
it's you who kept me through the long nights.
no one knows where a fading star goes.
and i'll fly light-years to find you.
to you, my universe, the only reason i exist.
i'll always be here for you.
is it love?
i remember the first moment i saw you.
you feel the same way, right?
we can't play no game the right way.
it doesn't matter 'cause you're my prize.
i saw the same moon.
i want to dream every day.
i want to whisper in your ears the things i couldn't say.
we're not that young anymore.
i still remember the summer days when i first saw you.
believe in us more than anything.
i don't mind staying up all night, my love.
let's talk like we did when we were young.
i'm your friend. i'll be there.
take my hand and run.
sweet dreams, my love.
our story continues even in dreams.
when the moon shines bright, i'll tell you my story.
close your eyes and lean on me, my love.
oh, you've grown so quickly, kid.
we were always young and fearless.
we're together and we have the same dream.

We know sukuna's a huge hater for Yuuji right? But theres a saying around my country where "you shouldn't hate someone TOO MUCH or else fate will always unite u with them."
Or sum like "don't hate someone too much, it'll turn to love."
<<<<<<♡>>>>>>>
Imagine a happy ending Sukuna, one where he genuinely decided to be in a loving and domestic household with you. He saw what the jujutsu world can do, both ancient and modern, Gojo has provenly showed him a thrilling time by being the one and almost only person to make him feel the life and death situation in such a predictable battle.
He got to meet the plentiful talented sorcerers in the modern world, one where they have far more advanced knowledge in how life works than those in the heian era. The new sorcerers didn't disappoint him too much. Some managed to learn innate domain expansion in a mere second, others didn't have any curse energy yet managed to hurt him more than those who do. He's seen it all, he feels content.
Hence why he made a choice to have his own happy ending, see where life gets him after his "unsavory" conversation with his fated nephew. The tangy memories of that boy's bright smile hearing sukuna giving him a chance to show him how beautiful life can be, even if deep within. Theres a dreaded feeling whenever he sees that gullible boy, a fire pit inside him whenever he realized how innocent his so called "nephew" is for believing someone like him can be saved too.
Sukuna thought back idly, coming back to his senses as he feels your hair being combed through his fingers in a consistent motion. He wonders if maybe that annoying brat is right, he has a dutiful lover now. One who he feels as though wouldn't have been his if he didn't accept that despicable brat's decision.
The warm feeling of the sun hitting both him and his equal is... a blissful feeling. He used to be empty, seeking thrill from both knowledge and greed of such delicacies, humans, animals.. all he could find and devour till his stomach is full. All knowledgeable for such sorcery to make sure he stays the top, to see if someone is there to fight and able to defeat him on top of the lonely world of the strongest.
Now he's sitting here, the daunting feeling of such title no longer haunts him. Theres no one who can use him like an object, to fight and treat him like a game boss, speak his name like an object to defeat, disregard him as something worth less than humanity and curses, a natural calamity. Inside this prosperous Minka, he is just sukuna. Hes not the starving child, ostracized from society, being stripped bare of his real birth given name.
He's now.. Sukuna.
The husband and father of... currently one brat.
Speaking of a brat.
There's hustling noises of running feet ontop of the well cared grass, the thumping of something- no. Someone not much older than 5 years old.
"Papa!"
There he is.
"I got butterflies!!"
The small brat he managed to raise. The one and only child he has, a miracle. He was tempted to call him "megumi" too actually- but he's too prideful to use a rip off of someone elses name. He created his own, he hoped. This child doesn't get sick from bearing the weight of his own name.
"Those are Dragonflies, Yajou"
Yajou, a combination of both the kanji for appearance and fulfillment. A perfect name for one who completes the boundaries between human and curses.
Although...
Sukuna stared at his son again. His face is much more similar to a certain brat than him. His bright and naive eyes, those unopened set of eyes under his proper main ones, the tufs of pink hair on top while his lover's natural hair decorated the sides. Its all too familiar, he hates it. He hates having a split image of his disgusting nephew in this... fleshy and chonky baby form.
"Free! Free dragon!"
The child babbles out, spreading his hands out to let the Dragonfly leave his fleshy touch. It was... cute, adorable even. Sukuna sigh.
This.. is a funny way of fate telling him to learn his lesson.
>>>♡♡<<<
God i had this thought at 1am i did NOT proof reading this i just fucking wing it brooooooo. Hope its good ig djdhdjjdkd
Yajou Doodles♡

Not trying to be confrontational or anything, I just wanna know as a fellow black man:
How can you stand to look at The Body? I've seen the full thing only once 10 years ago, and I still get a mild panic attack every time his name is mentioned. How do you deal with it
The first thing is that I am one of those people to whom dead bodies don't look real. It's a clay figure, a wooden puppet, it's not a person, not anymore. This apparently isn't an uncommon response- and it's not limited to people. The body is just a body. It's an inanimate object. The being inside it has gone. I looked in the coffin when my grandmother died and I have no idea whose face that was, because I didn't recognize it as someone I actually knew. It was just some dead body.
This is also apparently a common trauma response so perhaps not the healthiest way of looking at things. I don't feel particularly traumatized looking at dead relatives or even Till's body. However I felt incredibly triggered during the month that protests broke out across the country and it was dead body after dead body showcased to demonstrate police killings and violence. However I think that is more of a numbers and overexposure to racism thing than simply sensitivity to looking at corpses. But racism is also inherently traumatic so perhaps that IS the problem with me.
[I however can't watch the moment someone dies, as that will send me into an instant panic attack. Once they're dead on the ground though my brain doesn't care. It's weird. I watched this documentary about Vietnam in high school where someone is interviewing citizens in the town square and a soldier walks up to them and shoots them both in the head without a word. I couldn't sleep for several days after that.]
Finally, while it is shocking and triggering, I think it is important to witness. His mother deliberately made sure his body was displayed so that no one could argue that what was done to kill her son "wasn't that bad". There are pictures of her having a breakdown next to his coffin as she reaches for him. Obviously she did not have the same problem I have recognizing the body as the person it was in life.
Obviously if you can't take it you can't take it. But I think it is important to show his body to anyone who tries to justify his murder. When we say that young teenagers should be kidnapped and beaten to death by grown adults if someone accuses them of wrongdoing, with or without any actual evidence, we have demonstratably lost whatever capacity we once had for recognizing each other's humanity.
He was just a boy. And they turned his face into ground beef. And now people want to look away from the truth and talk out the side of their mouth that he deserved it. I don't think anyone deserves to be beaten to death by vigilantes. I especially don't think a child deserves it.

kind of obsessed with this theme of not belonging to earth in midnight burger
like....Gloria, Ava, Casper and Leif. They are all humans. They were born on Earth, they lived there their whole life, they know how to act and behave when they are with other humans.
And yet. Earth is not for them.
It is seen primarily in Leif, with hjis whole backstory. Even his own mother referring to him as someone "who fell out from space". He left the Earth with the first chance and he never looked back. Sure, he may sometimes grow nostalgic, but he never regretted his decision. Earth is not his home and the problem is not even in how much Earth is undeveloped not only by the standards of Triad but even by Leif's standards. He doesn't understand people, he doesn't understand why they do what they do. What's even more prominent with Leif is how the only space he belongs is SPACE. Like COSMOS. Not some other planet or moon, just the entirety of space. His first real friend is an alien journalist!!! And the only humans he managed to connect to are literary the ones pulled from 20 years from his time(on Earth) and in a dimension spinning time warping diner!
But this idea, of not belonging to Earth, is also present in Gloria and Ava and even Casper. It's not as prominent as with Leif, but it is still present.
Gloria admits she never liked the idea of marriage and kids. Her parents were the only stable relationship she had. Her whole life, blood and soul was her restaurant and when she lost it she had no idea what to do with herself.
Ava, who as we know, is so much smarter than everyone else. The academia hurt her so much because they didn't understand her. She wanted to figure out the WHOLE UNIVERSE and had not only the guts to do it, but also the brain power. Somewhere, where other people would long gave up, she remained stubborn and victorious.
And even Casper. I must admit, right now I am only on episode 38 and this whole season seems to be heavily focused on Casper and his relation to the diner, so I may not know something BUT! BUT! You cannot tell me, that his son running from home wasn't his excuse to get out from his life. Of course, he went looking for him, no objections here, but it also was an opportunity for him to sort of quit. Just get out. I'm not sure what the future holds for him, there are hints that he may leave Midnight Burger, which honestly I kiiiind of sad about it? I think it would be really cool if he has a chance to leave the midnight burger but chose not to. Because now - similar to how it was at the end of season 2, when he talked to Ava - he chooses this. He chooses those people, he chooses Midnight Burger. It is a conscious choice, the same it was with Ava, Gloria, and Leif.
Anyway. Something about you being born on this planet and then realizing this is not your planet. The problem is not with you or your environment, the problem is with the whole fucking planet. Something about you being stuck there because humanity made only the first steps into space exploration and you will die sooner than get into space. You living with this thought that you are stuck here. There is no escape.
And then you see a diner.

You know it deeply saddens me how much of an echo chamber Terfs are in. I'll be on desktop and I'll go into the notes of a post, see a shit take from a blogger with a glowing red username, go to their blog, and it's just. 10-30% normal posts, the rest nonstop Terfarama going on. Click on one blog, and all of a sudden there's a free blacklist the more I scroll through. Like, idk, I do not understand people who can dedicate so much of their life and their free time to hating other people. I hate bigots of all varieties, from your common conservative to the libertarian horde to ecofascists to the common Acolyte of Rowling, but this is the first post I've independently made about them because, I don't know about you, as much as these people actively work to make my life and the lives of people I love miserable, I just generally do not want to think about them in my spare time? Idk, I like being happy, I struggle to be happy, so why would I spend so much of my time dwelling on how unhappy a group of people make me?
But idk, maybe they're just keeping themselves in a different environment than I am. I used to consider Tumblr hellish, but ever since I've started curating my dash through selective following and liberal blocking, it's just been so much more peaceful. I come here now to relax, to hear about global events, and to share interesting posts I find, be they fandom or science or what have you. Life in general is rough as it is, why would I ever want to spend more time dwelling on that reality when that doesn't change anything?
I honestly don't think terfs know nor care that all they're ever going to do is push people away, isolate themselves, alienate the world, and harm the people they care about. They're an interesting hate group, one that isn't solely a group in power at the top punching down, but one that is largely comprised of cis women who are scared and shaken by the pain and suffering inflicted upon them by misogynistic society. But fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to teaming up with all the other people who hate just as strongly as you to feel powerful. But that feeling of power is only ever going to be a feeling. Terfs neuter their capability to effect actual change because instead of actually going after men who abuse their power, instead of nurturing their communities to grow past the need for toxic masculinity and the degradation of women, they direct all of their focus on attacking trans women, policing other women, gaslighting trans men, pushing cis men as far away as possible, and throwing everyone else under the bus to get there.
This is such a stupid strategy that even if trans women were actually secretly men and bioessentialism was true, trans women still wouldn't be men with any actual power because they neither claim masculinity, act it out, benefit from it, nor are welcome among it. Cis men regularly attack and abuse trans women en mass, deny them human rights, and deny them positions of authority. It is so, so apparently clear that trans women are below cis men in the social pecking order, so even if someone is so wrapped up in 8th grade science class biology that they can't see trans women as women, it STILL wouldn't make sense to devote so much of your energy and hate toward a group of people who objectively do not hold any societal power over you instead of the ones that do.
I sincerely hope that this epidemic of faux-feminists who court neonazis when it's convenient for them becomes a footnote in the history book someday. Ace exclusionism was largely nipped in the bud years ago, though there still are some shitheads who've never left it, but I've seen hategroups come and go. This one has had staying power thanks to JKR and other prominent figures championing it alongside the global movement mobilizing against the increased rights of trans people, but it can't last forever. I hope all the blogs I've blocked so full of hate get deleted one day when their owners can't stomach the hate poured into them anymore. It probably won't happen, they'll probably still be here until the site goes under, but I still hope. Everyone is capable of change with the right incentives, so hopefully someday soon it will be more rewarding to love trans women than to hate them.

Legolas x reader one shot
-in which you come to understand you are not so similar to the elf prince. Infact, you are just what each other needs.
(CW: Slight angst, fluff, comfort, mild enemies to lovers, Brief mention of an injury, multiple mentions of death/mortality)
Gender neutral pronouns, no use of Y/N
Unedited
As an elf, Legolas had seen many things. Years seemed to go by as breaths in the wind. The company of elves was painfully monotonous at times, which is why he often jumped at the opportunity to venture for new sights.
Deep beneath his aloof princely persona, a bright cheerful elfling with a hunger for knowledge and excitement lived, only to be seen in the truest of moments.
That is what brought him to you.
Legolas had leaped for the opportunity to join the fellowship. A quest of a lifetime, even for a being who's lifetime was unhindered by grip of meager mortality.
However, the fellowship brought him a rare opportunity. It was a chance to let the adventurer in his soul breathe. It was a chance to make memories that meant something.
You on the other hand, seemed to lack the thick walls Legolas had built for himself. You were brash, worldly, vibrant, and bold. Every fiber of your being seemed bursting with humanity and life.
Which is why, despite the disapproval of others, you were a perfect fit for the fellowship.
You had managed to claw your way into not only the council, but the very group itself. The sheer force of your will brought you there.
At first, you vehemently disliked Legolas. He was everything you were not; noble, elegant, and unbothered by nearly everything. Yet even your contrasting demeanor was not the root of your distaste. What bothered you most, is that he seemed to be judging your every move.
The elf simply could not take his eyes off of you. You could be doing something as simple as cooking, and he would stare at you as if you were doing every step wrong. It made your skin crawl.
In all honesty, you wished desperately to earn his approval. Even subconsciously, you would favor him. Giving him extra portions of dinner when you could, showing off when he was near in battle, dressing better to seem less brutish. Yet the more you seemed to try, the more you found his eyes lingering.
In truth, Legolas did see you as the opposite of everything he was. Which is why he admired every minute movement you made. Every object you owned was stained with the colourful whimsy of life, every breath you let out sounded like joy itself was running through your lungs, every step you took marked the ground with the beauty of your being. In his eyes, you we're more magnificent than any elven beauty he had encountered.
He was so unsure of how to act in your presence. He feared you would see him as a haughty prince, so he avoided showing off around you, yet he still craved your praise. In the end, he had landed on a balance of effortless performance, and casual elegance. Despite his efforts however, you never seemed to notice him.
That was until one particular night, when you had been put on watch together, much to your chagrin.
You had sat in silence most of the night, humming the occasional tune to yourself to stay awake. The elf next to you, sat in complete quiet, staring off into the vast distance from your perch in the canopy.
"Do you like the stars?" Legolas spoke, breaking the tense silence. You looked up, surveying the infinite tapestry of lights above.
"they are beautiful." You muttered in response. Not wanting to engage in idle conversation all night.
"The stars are fascinating to me. My kin are known for their affinity to them, but my love for them goes far beyond even theirs. I could tell you the name of nearly every light in this sky." He monologued.
"I suppose you've had a long time to learn them." You replied, looking over to him for the first time all night.
"I dare to say I have too much time to learn them. Elves live long lives, yet not many speak of the boredom of endurance. I often have no choice but to stare at the stars." His voice rang with nostalgia.
"I wish I could say I understood, but I fear I suffer from the opposite. Being human means I know that one day I will die, and that I could spend every day of my life living to the fullest, and still have so much I missed. I often find myself wishing I was immortal, at least then I would know there is nothing more to learn." You sighed, your eyes shifting to your fidgeting hands.
"that's the thing about you humans. You have the opportunity to fill your every day with something new or exciting. Your presence on this earth is short lived, but it is vibrant. I can only wish for a life so fulfilling." Legolas spoke, shifting to look at you.
You look up, meeting that familiar gaze. "You have all the time in the world, yet you believe less would leave you more fulfilled? You're a prince, a warrior, and a hero of many, with every opportunity you could ask for. I struggle to see how you could be unfulfilled."
"I am grateful for my life, yes, but It is one that is spread thin between ages of loneliness and an inability to share it with others. Your life is so full of connections and experiences and passion, if anything, I struggle to see how you see that as unfulfilling." Legolas spoke, a faint smile gracing his features.
Legolas turned back towards the sky, a shy grin tracing his lips. "Perhaps."
You huffed, looking away from him, unable to maintain his tense eye contact. "The root of our issues is so different, yet we are both unfulfilled by life. Perhaps we are just cursed to want what life will never grant us.
Things were different with Legolas after that. You often stuck to each other's sides. Legolas began sharing his observations about the world around him with you, and you would listen. Learning more about not only the world around you, but how he saw it. And you listened, you told him every thought that came to your mind.
Legolas would still watch you as he used to, but now, you would invite him to join you. Talking through every moment of your day as if you were teaching him to be human.
The rest of the fellowship noticed of course. No one really said anything, but after a point, everyone just assumed you were a duo now. They all thought it was fascinating how two people so different could manage to ramble on for. All but Aragorn, who knew exactly what Legolas watched you for, and had long picked up on your wish to be accepted by him.
As the journey continued, and even after the fellowship disbanded, you and Legolas only drew closer.
You had begun to do everything together. You fought together, trained together, you had spent many long nights on watch together. It amazed you how someone so seemingly withdrawn, could have hours of conversation and life buried underneath.
You of course, had grown fond of Legolas. It hurt, you knew from the beginning that your feelings would never be returned. It was hard not to feel the insecurity of your differences clawing at your mind again.
Yet Legolas only managed to fall more and more in love with you. You had become his best friend in such a short time it was almost embarrassing, and it was even harder to understand how he felt such a deep love for you in even less time. Legolas knew he could never properly court you. Not because he was scared of his father's disapproval, because he knew that you would never accept the weight that came with the title of his lover. So he elected to love you quietly for as long as he could.
That was until the siege on the black gate, in which Legolas was confronted with the scope of your mortality.
You had been shot in the shoulder. Legolas watched it happen, and despite his best efforts could do nothing to stop it. He raced to get you help, knowing you were losing large amounts of blood, and we're quickly slipping out of consciousness.
When you came to, the war had been won. Legolas was still with you however. Watching your every breath to ensure they did not wane.
"Meleth nín! You are awake!" Legolas gripped you tightly when you finally awoke. Even he was shocked by his sudden advances, and is use of words.
"Good morning to you too," You laughed softly, a warm smile gracing your features "And I thought it was Mellon...have I been saying it wrong or is that a new word?" You questioned. You had been trying to learn any ounce of elvish you could in your time with Legolas, but you gravely underestimated how much you did not know.
"you are correct, do not worry. I will teach you some other time. For now I am just glad you are still present." Legolas replied, releasing you from his grip.
You reaches up to comb your fingers through a piece of his hair that was slightly disheveled. "I did not realize you would miss me that much. Maybe I ought to stay asleep longer next time and I'll wake up to a gift." You teased, an airy giggle escaping you.
Legolas shook his head and chuckled. "Of course I missed you. In truth, have come to value your presence more than any other. I find myself unsure of how to act without you beside me."
"I was not aware of how starved of friendship you were. And to think you've gotten so attached to a silly mortal." You sighed playfully, a light blush bubbling up to your cheeks.
"You mean more to me than even I wish to accept. In all honesty, if I could stay by you every hour of every day I would. You are the most vibrant being I have ever met. You make me someone I've always wanted to be. It... It is not friendship I feel for you." Legolas' eyes looked pained. His hand carefully drifted over yours
"You're being truthful? Are you aware that I will die someday too? That even though I do love you, I will never be able to be with you forever. I'm not sure if I could bring you such pain." Your voice softened, you hand tracing gently over Legolas'
"I have lived many years waiting to feel the way I do every moment of my life when I am with you. You make me feel fulfilled. I may outlive you, but I will never outlive my love for you." He brought your hand to his lips, leaving a gentle kiss on your knuckles.
"I have always feared what I will lose from my mortality. I only hope you can love me long past that. So that even if I do not live to die beside you, some part of me will remain in your mind, to witness everything the world have to offer you." You're eyes lightly stung with unshed tears.
"I will care for you every moment of your life, Meleth nín" he kissed your forehead gently.
"And I will be there to keep you from the troubles of loneliness," You spoke, softly "iiiif you can tell me what that means" you let out a light giggle
"my love. It means my love."

Mirror mirror on the wall, who are the top 5 greenest flags of them all?
ooof, this is more @heretherebedork than my cuppa but lemme see
you didn't specify seme or country so that makes my life easier, because bettcha can't guess who's gonna top this list
My Top 5 Greenest Flags in BL!
Tumblr media
Noh from Love Sick
Look, he's just like the Nicest Little Dude. He's loyal and kind and good to his friends, and tries really hard to communicate the truth and be honest about his feelings even when he's a crazy hormonal teen and doesn't understand his own or anyone else's. Noh is not just any green flag he's a teenager green flag. That never happens.
Tumblr media
Xun An from My Tooth You Love
He is so damn sweet and thoughtful and he tries so hard to protect everyone (except himself). But it's that moment in the car where he finally understands the extent of his baby's psychological issues that we all got to meet The Real Deal. Because what does he do? OMG he actually recommends Bai Lang seek professional help, from an actual therapist! Like that's THE MOMENT. The biggest green flag balls we have ever seen in a BL. Ever. I will brook no discussion on this matter.
Tumblr media
Plustor from Destiny Seeker
Bite me. I know you haven't seen this. How do I know? No one has seen this show. Such a shame. Plustor is 1/2 of the 3rd-string couple, the crumbs, the freshmen babies. Most of the drama is with the 2 older pairs, but these boys are GREAT. One of them is out gay (with his shit together) who hooks up with hot jock CHAOS bisexual and we all think we know where it's going (because when does the chaos bi have his shit together and not act like a predator slut? - yes I AM looking at you, Mame). Except, Plustor fucking TOTALLY has his shit together! He researches gay sex and how to do it right, he asks his new bf questions, he communicates his self-confidence issues over never having been with a dude before. He talks. They talk. As a result these kids spend most of the show annoyed by the unnecessary drama of their piers who do NOT have their shit together and being the best bfs ever.
Tumblr media
Mork from My Ride
What, you surprised? Mork goes through an entire identity crisis and manages NOT to drag anyone else into his drama. He keeps his life together, takes care of his family, asks his gay uncles for advice, realizes he is in love. He does not force that love on his beloved. Instead he stays in the side lines, tries to be a good supportive friend to the object of his affection, and a consistently chooses the path of decent human being. He's careful and kind and communicative when he eventually does make his move. Stand up dude! Adorable dimple! We likie.
Tumblr media
Yak from Wandee Goodday
I feel like I have to include someone from this year because Green Flag Semes are such a 2024 trend. For me, it just had to be Yak. He such a great communicator and he just defines the GGG (good, giving, game) attitude that one wants in a sexual partner. I gotta say, it's actually not uncommon to have better sexual communication with a play partner or a fuck buddy than within a relationship. It was nice to see that portrayed on our screens in a BL. Whatcha know, mature characters being mature and shizz. Insanity.
I have to say, if you had given me 6, Alan from Pit Babe would have also made this list.
Others I Thought About
Seryou (Seven Days)
Kakeru (I Cannot Reach You)
Ida (My Love Mix Up)
Kyosuke (Sugar Dog Life) - does cluelessness count?
Kazuma (Tokyo in April)
Both in Some More
Qizhang (About Youth)
Sato (See You After Quarantine?)
Tatch (2 Moons 3)
X (21 Days Theory)
King (Bed Friend)
Khun (Brothers)
Karan (Cherry Magic)
Fueangnakhon (City of Stars)
Gun (Tossera)
Ram (La Cuisine)
Ae (Love By Chance) - I'm WELL AWARE I'm picking a Mame character
God (Monster Next Door)
Li (Moonlight Chicken)
Sun (Sunset X Vibes)
Latte (Knock Knock Boys)

it seems to me that our task—as Christians but also just as people who care about this country and don’t want to see it like this—is to step outside the us-versus-them, black and white thinking which elections love to encourage, and begin imagining our neighbors more generously and compassionately.
our politicians have spent the whole election cycle appealing to the very lowest common denominator—but that does not mean that when we picture our political rivals we must imagine the lowest common denominator. it does not mean that that lowest common denominator defines everyone who voted one way or another. the people who voted for the worst possible reasons do exist—people who feel genuine hate for those different from them, the crass and the vitriolic and the cruel, the power-hungry and the callous. these people are all real, and our politics has undoubtedly given them a voice. but again: I think we must challenge ourselves to hold in our minds a version of the “other” who is more human and more complicated than that. our principle should be built off of “innocent until proven guilty”—we should consider people as being politically thoughtful and well-meaning and conflicted, until we are beyond a doubt proven wrong.
the objection, at this point, would be the objection I’ve seen all over the internet: “okay, maybe people had better reasons in mind, but voting for a rapist wasn’t a dealbreaker for them.” and that’s a powerful bit of rhetoric. but, first of all, both sides were using the same arguments leading up to the election to dissuade people from voting third party or sitting the election out: “you’re not supposed to vote for somebody perfect, you’re supposed to vote for the lesser of two evils/the policies you most agree with/the party you think will most support your interests and the common good.” so it’s hypocritical to then turn around and accuse your political opponents of voting for someone who’s personally (understatement of the year) not perfect. and second of all, the notion of “maybe they didn’t like such-and-such policy or quality, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker” is actually exactly my point.
every voter has to weigh for him or herself which issues are going to be regarded as most important. as long as I’ve been alive, people have been pearl-clutchingly scandalized that others have weighed the issues differently than themselves, so the moral panic certainly is not new. but despite that, this is literally what our country is founded upon: there is no set-in-stone hierarchy of values. we all get to decide for ourselves what good is worth pursuing. note: I’m not saying this is a good thing; I think what we’re seeing now is precisely the problem with that system. but the point remains that you cannot insist on the importance of a democratic election and then be horrified that democracy will sometimes vote in favor of a good that you think is subordinate, to the exclusion of a good you think is foundational—that’s democracy for you! that’s the system! you might view it as despicably selfish and shallow to vote based on the price of eggs—but for someone who is very poor, that reasoning might appear far more serious than it does to you. what would be a dealbreaker for you might not be a dealbreaker for someone else.
everyone has to determine for himself or herself what the greatest possible good is which can be achieved by the federal government, and what the greatest evil is we should avoid. at the end of this determination, everyone ends up with his or her own little hierarchy of values. the horror of two-party politics is that unless your hierarchy lines up point by point with the platform of one of the main parties—and it almost certainly doesn’t!!—your vote will either not align with the hierarchy you believe to be right and just, or it will not have the power to put that hierarchy into practice in the real world. this is where imagining people generously and compassionately comes into play: perhaps someone’s first priority in casting a vote for the republicans was the price of eggs. now, instead of jumping to the conclusion that their second priority was expelling hated foreigners from the country or making it so gay couples lose visitation rights at the hospital, imagine that their second priority was something you agree with, something compassionately-motivated and understandable, maybe even something that wasn’t a part of the republican platform. now imagine what priorities they might have that weren’t presented as an option by either of the main parties—priorities they might share with you.
”but my morality is right!” you might say. “their priorities are misaligned and their hierarchy of values is wrong!” that may very well be true. but American democracy cannot recognize it, cannot give any more weight to the true worldview, because that would be taking sides. if you want a democratic system you have to accept the possibility that the correct and the popular might not line up. you might also say, “but they’re wrong about which policies are actually going to help them! the price of eggs won’t go down!” that might also be true. in that case, it’s sort of on the people with the good policies for failing to convince the voters.
you might feel aghast that other people weighed the things you disagree with them about as more important than the things you agree with them about. it’s an understandable feeling. but the crucial thing is twofold: one, unless you acknowledge their right to disagree with you—both in essential matters of morality and in matters of the relative importance of specific moral issues—you don’t actually believe in American democracy. and two, if we are to move forward we have to start acting as if the things on which we agree are more important to our humanity than the things on which we disagree. even if we voted based on the things we disagree on! when we interact with each other we have to focus on the things we agree on.
we have to believe that people are trying their best. we have to, when we engage in political discourse, engage with a hypothetical opponent who is not the easiest possible punching bag. and when we’re confronted with our genuine enemies—those who hate us and hate everything good—instead of dehumanizing them, we have to love them. I don’t end there as a little glittery good-feeling flourish to smooth over the difficulties, because that is the most difficult part. there is no version of this story where all the hurt and fear and division are erased simply by the “right people” winning elections. there is also no version of this story where all the hatred and sin and despair is solved by good people contentedly praying rosaries in little self-satisfied prayer groups. Our Lord reconciled the world to Himself not by the worldly power of conquest, and also not by kindliness and miracles and convincing people one by one to change their lives, but by His suffering and death. the reconciliation of our world will require our suffering, and our death to self. there is no other way out than through the radical love of the Cross—that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He asks us to follow in His footsteps. imagining our neighbor as lovable is a good first step. loving him when he is not lovable is the next one, and the necessary one.
