Hey weirdos I want ur opinions
Feel free to reply, reblog, or send an ask with ur opinions but uhhhh Iâm thinking about going into law. Like, maybe to become an attorney.
Yes I got the idea from playing Ace Attorney and being so horny on main for Phoenix Wright (why him? Donât have an answer to that question. Genuinely no clue) but uhhh also the more I look into it the more I think itâd be a great fit for me.
Like Iâm calling around to local law firms and asking about the job and the schooling and such and like. Man. It sounds like a dream job practically. Obviously thereâs gonna be parts of it I donât care for but like, even some of the stuff the attorneys I spoke with said were bad I was like ???? howâs that bad? Like one of them was saying if I were to open a private firm itâs a lot of like, running your own business (of course) and he made it sound so bad but I was also genuinely considering opening my own business at some point so like. Thatâs something I already think Iâd be at least decent at and have looked into a bit.
Anyway. I just really like philosophy and debate and research and I wanted to be a teacher to make a positive impact on peopleâs lives but canât really handle that environment so like, law seems so great for me because Iâd also be able to make a positive impact and like, wouldnât have to deal with bullshit like teaching common core đ

I genuinely think that Gumshoe x Miles is an underrated ship in Ace Attorney. Donât get me wrong, I understand the appeal of Phoenix and Miles, hell I enjoy reading the fics and browsing the tags. But I think so many focus on just those two. Focus on how well they ought to know each other, and completely miss out on the other relationships within the games. Platonic or not.
(more of my thoughts under the cut)
In the games itâs said and shown multiple times that Gumshoe and Miles have a close relationship. If you ignore the generalization of Gumshoe in the later games, which is a tragedy because Gumshoe was a really interesting character in this first game. He had more dimension, and if he was done right he couldâve portrayed a really interesting viewpoint that isnât looked at that often. One that touches on how the people within the police system view it. Not to mention how this topic will always be an important thing to discuss, for those who rely on said system and those who work within and alongside it.
But I digress this post isnât about that.
What this post is about, is that there is a lot more depth to Gumshoe and Miles relationship than I think both the games and fandom give it credit for. There is a trust there that I honestly think run deeper than the one portrayed by Phoenix and Miles. The fact that theyâve worked closely together for years before the first game starts. The fact that in the Investigation games we get a glimpse of how their dynamic works from Miles pov, which yeah we get it in the third game but thereâs something more to it in the Investigations games in my opinion. Also in the DLC of the first game, the fact that Gumshoe left Miles the brochure for that lunch place, will always make me smile. Itâs the fact that it was such a natural thing, a simple âhey I know you arenât doing well, hereâs a thing I think you might like.â
Not to mention that Gumshoe was the only one who knew Miles was alive during That Year? No one seems to actually talk about that. Putting aside what I think the letter meant, the fact that not even Franziska, Milesâs sister knew if he was alive or not. But Gumshoe knew? Guys. Guys.
Again, I get the draw of Wrightworth. I do, I was also very attached to the ship when I first got into the franchise and fandom. But I do think that there is something to be said about the other relationships portrayed in game that arenât overly stated.
If this post was shit Iâm sorry, please forgive any errors Iâll work on fixing grammar another day. Maybe Iâll also talk about my opinion of langworth if anyone is interested in that.

Fic Writer Interview.
thanks for the tag @juudaimes-true-form. the @ is. not working. sorry kjnbhvbhj
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
30.
2. Whatâs your total AO3 word count?
245,076, apparently.
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Oumasai Oneshots: 1,297
A Fragile Bridge of Trust: 710
Lost Souls: 593
History Maker: 433
Game Over: 417
All of these are old and older. One of them isn't even finished. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--
Please read my newer works o(âĽďšâĽ)o
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Nearly always yeah. I like the people who read my work and overcome whatever anxiety they might feel to know that I appreciate anything they have to say, and I'm grateful.
5. Whatâs the fic youâve written with the angstiest ending?
I enjoy angst a fair bit but rarely do I ever write something that ends with angst. Obviously, Game Over was expressly written as a bad end to a v3 au i was working on, so it's the easy answer, but there are a few in the oumasai oneshots that I think count, namely Chapter 22, Chapter 24, Chapter 26, and in more ambiguous turf Chapter 19 and Chapter 15. I still like the ambiguous ones a fair bit even now, the first 2 not-ambiguous ones just do not hold up with my interpretation of the text anymore (and also i wrote worse), but 26 is fine. Game Over could have been better, but hey I was a different writer then.
That said I have a lot of stuff I consider heavy on angst, but since they have happy endings I don't think they count for this. But I enjoy that kind of fic the most.
6. Whatâs the fic youâve written with the happiest ending?
the ones I haven't finished yet--/gets shot. Nah, probably Le Chasseur et le DĂŠmon (The Hunter and the Fiend), because it's a fairytale. It gets a fairytale ending. But I like happy endings so it's pretty hard for me to pick.
7. Do you write crossovers?
No because I tend not to like them and find them obtuse, UNLESS said crossover is between dangan ronpa and Higurashi. No I could not explain why these two things in specific inspired me this much. But also I'm SO right and one day I'll get back to those. But mostly crossover concepts exist in jokes in dms with my friend Cass.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yep lmao. A couple times. It's been pretty lackluster though like solid 2/10 hate comment y'all can do better.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No? Okay so I did orphan a series of fics that had smut in them, but that smut was kind of poetic and deliberately vague, and it's probably the most I plan on committing to in the future for the fics I'm working on rn.
I think people who write pwp or other hard smut are very impressive and have a set of skills I lack, namely....the ability to express physical intimacy in any capacity, including through words! I honestly like. Still struggle with kiss scenes sometimes, but for me all this comes down to my visceral irl discomfort with people existing within 3 feet of me, nevermind touching me.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I sure the fuck hope not.Â
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't remember if this happened with a fic, but iirc I think someone translated that long ass DR meta I wrote about Ouma and Komaeda into...Russian? I don't remember very well. Also that meta is being majorly overhauled spoilers I guess.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not for fic no. All my fic belong solely to me, as do my original works, and its what I prefer. I've done volunteer writing on other people's original projects however, even right now. @clusterfuck-au is something I work on with my friend Wren, but I do all the writing, and they do art stuff, so its not the same lmao.
13. Whatâs your all-time favorite ship?
Idk how I'm supposed to have one of these when I can't really pick a fandom over a fandom. So I'll just name some fandoms I like, and the ship I currently like the most for it.
Ace Attorney: narumitsu (there are a couple close runner ups tho)
Dangan Ronpa: komahina
AITSF: ryudate
Higurashi: keimii
Spy x Family: Twiyor
There are other I fandoms, and other ships, but it'd take forever so take these.
14. Whatâs a WIP that you want to finish but donât think you ever will?
I HAVE SO FUCKING MANY MY GUY, AND I REALLY WANT TO FINISH THEM, BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN IF EVER I'LL GET TO EM. HERE WE GO. I will not be including the WIP I'm working on right now! That's happening! fuck you @ self
The Long Way 'Round: This is supposed to be an extremely long narumitsu Ace fanfic about their relationship through the years from their time together in childhood to after Apollo Justice. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about their relationship, its ups and downs, and the character development they undergo together and seperately. The fic would not feature anything actually shown in canon, and doesn't include DD or SoJ because I hate them and think they're bad and disowned them from canon. This fic is next on my list of things to work on.
Exoneration AU and the LCC rewrite: aus that only makes sense to anyone who has ever read the visual novel Chaos;Child and is in fandom (maybe 100 people) and ALSO is gay enough to ship Takuru, the main character of a bishoujo game, with Shinji (his token best friend). Also has to be gay enough to ship the girls together. also has to be based enough to think Kawahara deserved better and are mad about the writer's gaslighting. I'm not going to explain the plot of these any further; y'all aint gonna get it.
The Cries of Hope's Peak Academy: AKA, clusterfuck AU. What if I took the higurashi cast and put them in a pre-despair dangan ronpa setting (also the v3 kids are here too). Also. What if I shipped. Mion with Keiichi, Hinata, and Ikusaba, Keiichi with Ouma, Kamukura and Saihara, Ouma with Kamukura and Saihara, Kamukura with Komaeda, Komaeda with Hinata, and Hinata with Saihara. This is the titular clusterfuck; they are a polycule in progress. Its not even the only ship. The plot though is inspired by all that I wished Dangan Ronpa 3: Despair Arc was, with Enoshima taking advantage of vulnerable people via manipulation and HPA's inherent powderkeg, but with higurashi's thematic core.
Higurashi: When They Cry - Uso (Lies) and what would be its answer arc counterpart I haven't named yet: The other crossover fic. This one is just. What if I yeeted Ouma into the Higurashi setting like it was where he belonged. What would happen. It's Higurashi, so it borrows a lot from its overarching story and arc ideas, but every arc would be a unique twist based on the existence of a new guy in there! I still like this a lot. I still think of every character in dangan ronpa, Ouma feels the most like the one who would belong in Higurashi, and stands the most to gain from it.
The Klav/Seb enemies to lovers fic: it's exactly what it sounds like. I just think they have a lot in common but their themis years would absolutely be filled with PETTY beef because seb is a nepotism baby which pisses Klav off, and seb doesn't know he's a nepotism baby so he doesn't understand what the fuck his problem is. Also Apollo is there later. Klavier has 2 hands.
Pewter in a timeloop for aitsf and he gets a buddy cop dynamic with Iris on his looping quest to save renju. yeah that. that's the jist. also includes REHABILITATING THE OKIURA HOUSEHOLD AAAAAAA
I have some oneshots I haven't written yet, but those don't count. If you're aware of a long fic/series I was working on that isn't listed here....sorry but I think I've grown past those ideas.
I have two WIPs that are original, but I still work on those. They're both visual novel concepts I came up with, and they both mean everything in the world to me.
15. What are your writing strengths?
Fanfic specific strengths, I'm great at being in character. Translated more broadly, strong dialogue and internal narration coupled with actions and behaviors that reflect their emotional core.
I think my narration is at its best when it's just sitting inside some messy bitch's head and living out their entire thought process, and I think my background in poetry really adds to that. I like using line breaks and font sizes/alignments/effects to express intensity or disarray, etc. I do that for dialogue too. Also I'm pretty fucking funny in both places when I want to be. I think it adds to the charm, and I think my authorial voice adds to that.
Also tbh I'm so good at structuring and pacing frankly I think I'm a natural at it. I think my scenes are as long as they need to be, my stories hit every necessary beat, every scene and story ends and begins on the correct note, and readers learn things when they need to. Pacing and structure is not really something people think a lot about when they get asked this question, but I think it's the most important element to any story. If your pacing, your narrative structure is broken, no amount of metaphor and poetic description can save you.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
God forbid I have to describe a physical thing. Forget it. Not actions per se (although sometimes yeah those too, but more like clothes, settings, sounds, smells, tastes--that's a real struggle. I always think its the weakest thing I have to offer, and a lot of my writing process is desperately trying to put the image in my brain into words that make sense and sound good. Definitely the biggest weakness I have no fucking contest holy shit.
Other smaller struggles is a tendency to overuse words like just/maybe/really/still/etc; the problem with having a strong voice is that some of the quirks from my way of TALKING don't actually add anything to narration or the dialogue, so I've been training myself to cut back and cut things out. It can lead to things being repetitive.
Also, while I believe I have a lot of killer ideas that slap 10/10, and I'm a very creative person, the ADHD makes it hard to keep working on ideas even when I love them. The smallest thing stumping me, or boring me, or just kind of draining my sole, can get me not writing for weeks. I guess this is an ADHD problem, but it affects writing, my one true love, and in some ways that makes it the real biggest issue.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it's fine depending on how you do it. If you put a note at the end translating all the lines in other languages, or fit the translation smoothly within the narrative, I think that's completely legal.
With that said, I do kinda cringe when instead of writing Japanese someone types out just. romaji. I get that you want your audience to know how to read it, but they're likely not to know what it means anyway even IN romaji, so just commit. Go for authenticity. You can put the pronunciation in your footnotes too.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Pokemon in my spiral notebook in 5th grade. It's still pokemon online cause I made an illegal ffn account and moved it there at age 11. You can't read it; I literally don't even remember what the account was.
19. Whatâs a fandom/ship you havenât written for yet but want to?
Mmm....I guess spy x family? I haven't written full fic for it yet, and it'd be nice to. The list of ships is longer, and I'm not going to bother with that, but needless to say I have a lot of passions lmao.
20. Whatâs your favorite fic youâve written?
The ryudate fic I'm revising right the fuck now. No, okay, that's illegal, it doesn't exist in full yet, although you can read its revised first chapter here <3. That said, I find this decision kind of hard, so I'll give you a few that I've finished: Yours, Le Chasseur et le DĂŠmon (The Hunter and the Fiend), A Rational Man, The "Death" of Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth and a fic for a Pandora Hearts zine that hasn't come out yet!
Um. I will tag. @generalherasyndulla, @queenshroorn, and anyone else who reads this whole thing and considers themselves a writer.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @ittybittytoostormy! Thanks for tagging me! <3
If you see this and you wanna answer these, consider yourself tagged. I'm very shy about tagging people, especially those I haven't talked to a whole lot, but I'd really love to hear what others have to say. Also I have trouble remembering all my mutuals who write.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? Aha. Ahahahahahaha. Ha. Haha. 3. I'm trying <3
2. Whatâs your total Ao3 word count? 20,666 words.
3. What fandoms do you write for? So far just The Great Ace Attorney and The Stanley Parable. I plan on doing more, but honestly my ideas are mainly for those two. They're very fun to work with in their own way.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? Now That You're Here > The Solitaire Update > Down to a Science.
5. Do you respond to comments? Yeah, I appreciate anyone who takes the time to leave them, so I always wanna say a nice thank you.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? None of my fics have ended THAT angstily honestly. Somehow the angstiest one is The Solitaire Update, since the others end on a pretty good note, but it's not that sad, just weird.
7. Whatâs the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Down to a Science I think :).
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not so far.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Nah, not really my style. I might have a future fic where I'd put in a sex scene but uhhhhhh don't expect much from me.
10. Do you write crossovers? I have one in mind for the future! So I'm not opposed. I just have not yet.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No and I would rather not. I'm ultra slow and very particular with how my writing turns out, not very good for co-writing I think haha.
14. Whatâs your all time favorite ship? Benbaro, hands down. It's that sweet, trusting, enduring love between them that gets me.
15. Whatâs a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? It's more like ideas that I have that I might never actually flesh out. And there's quite a few of them honestly. One of them is a humor fic featuring Apollo and Nahyuta after the events of aa6.
16. What are your writing strengths? I think I'm good at laying on the emotion. I've also gotten compliments about how I write characters (which is nice to hear because that's one of the things I don't wanna mess up).
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Well, being extremely slow, for one, but also I rely a lot on description and I'd like to maybe not do that as much. I also think my lines are pretty but maybe not very memorable or "smart" I guess?
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? If I was fluent in another language, that'd be fun, but alas I'm not. I can maybe write a fic around a phrase, but I'd have to make sure I fully understand the semantics of it before doing anything.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Ahahaha. Warriors series. When I was in middle school. Those are on ffn and I'll never share them though.
20. Favorite fic youâve written? I think the one that turned out the best overall was Now That You're Here. But The Solitaire Update had the best idea haha.

thanks for tagging me @arofili for this writer ask meme!
how many works do you have on AO3?
73 (wtf when did that happen)
whatâs your total AO3 word count?
531,796
how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
ao3 lists 50, but some of these overlap, like me tagging something both âles mis all media typesâ and âles mis victor hugoâ. so probably around 36?
The top fandoms are Les Mis, Fullmetal Alchemist, Bartimaeus, and The Adventure Zone
what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Reunion --the Untamed from Lan Sizhuiâs pov
Angus McDonald and the Case of the Soul Stealer --taz fic sort of modern with magic au (also my first long fic and probably the fic with the most plot, i am very proud of it)
Wanting to Be Wanted -- fma fic, 5 times Greed didnât realize he cared about people and 1 time he did
what if the real steel samurai fandom was the friends we made along the way -- ace attorney characters in the steel samurai fandom from an outside pov (i only started posting this a bit over 2 months ago, so iâm kind of impressed)
Better Than Nothing -- Magnus Chase, Alex Fierro has gender feelings and receives a gift (this fic is really the one where i have zero idea why it is as popular as it is)
do you respond to comments, why or why not?
yeah! I like it when authors respond to my comments, so I try to at least say âthanks!â If someone leaves a more detailed comment, itâs fun being able to respond to the things they say and talk about any sort of âbehind the scenesâ writing things
whatâs the fic youâve written with the angstiest ending?
Iâm honestly not sure? I think even my angstiest fics have at least somewhat hopeful endings. Thereâs probably 5 or so I could choose from, but most of them were written a long time ago, Iâm going to say Sing Tomorrowâs Song because even though the ending isnât too angsty compared to the rest of the fic, it is about Grantaire being seduced by the personification of Death as a semi-metaphor for him dealing with depression, so itâs not exactly cheery
do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one youâve written?
Yes! I love crossovers, though I donât write them as much as I read them. Probably the weirdest two fandoms to crossover was Les Mis and the Beka Cooper series because me and my cowriter just sort of stuck France in the middle of the Tortall universe and didnât question it
have you ever received hate on a fic?
A couple times, but the only one I remember was when someone didnât like me writing Enjolras as a trans man
do you write smut? if so what kind?
Hah nope Iâll read it but as of right now Iâm aroace enough that Iâm barely comfortable with writing kissing
have you ever had a fic stolen?
I donât believe so
have you ever had a fic translated?
One of my first fics was translated into Russian on ffn, Tricksters Running. (Itâs sort of a weird character study on the Doctor from Doctor Who and Gabriel from Supernatural, and despite me writing it at the age of 14 itâs not terrible? younger me was better at poetic writing than current me)
have you ever co-written a fic before?
yeah, with @arofili !
whatâs your all time favorite ship?
Uhhh this is hard. The ship that took up my brain for the longest time is Enjolras/Grantaire, and currently my favorite ship is Phoenix Wright/Edgeworth
whatâs a WIP that you want to finish but donât think you ever will?
Well thereâs a Lucifer au of fma that i wrote like 70k words of and hyped up to all my friends but never started posting and honestly at this point I donât think I ever will.
For things that I started posting, A Home Beyond the What Ifs about Eponine/Cosette in Japan. I do like it, and I have a couple scenes of the next chapter written out, but I also have no motivation to actually work on it
what are your writing strengths?
Honestly? No clue, but not plot. Dialogue maybe?
what are your writing weaknesses?
Probably plot. I can sometimes come up with one, but most of my fics are just a series of loosely interconnected interactions it feels like
what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Generally I donât with a few exceptions.
If the pov character doesnât understand what is being said, Iâll sometimes write that bit of dialogue out in whatever other language it is in to sort of add to the experience (since I assume most readers would not be able to understand it either, and those who do will be delighted)
If the language is Japanese and characters mostly speak English, I also have the dialogue be in Japanese sometimes since that is the language I actually know well enough to be reasonably confident in writing it. I would not write a full conversation in Japanese or anything, but if theyâre switching between two languages then Iâll write it out in the languages itâs supposed to be in (for other languages I would usually just say âxxxâ they said in y language, or italicize it if they switch between two languages enough).
Lastly, if the fic is about language then I might also do that because thatâs sort of the whole point of the fic (which mostly overlaps with at least one of the above, but I have a fic in my drafts where 2 sentences donât fit the above exceptions, so i figured iâd include this)
what was the first fandom you wrote for?
Technically it was a Les Mis/Beka Cooper crossover. The first fic I posted that I wrote all by myself was a Supernatural/Doctor Who crossover. Which honestly sums up my interests as a 13-14yo pretty well I feel
whatâs your favorite fic youâve written?
...this is so hard
Iâm going to say Truth, In the Eye of the Beholder (40k study on sharing a body from the pov of Ling Yao) because I genuinely had so much fun working on it, and Iâm extremely proud of how it turned out. Definitely one if the fics I put more effort into than normal, and wrangling character arcs into place was hard, but I think it was worth the effort
I tag @micamicster @shadowy-dumbo-octopus @aromantic-enjolras @queerfandommiscellany, if you want to!

OUGHHH your art is killing me (affectionate) and now Iâm wondering abt what your post canon dgs headcanons are for susato and runo (and by extension susahao and asoryuu if you want!!!!) What you said about the susahao kiss before susato leaves is rotating in my mind rent free and I kind of want to draw it
The brainrot is very, very real ty for the food!!!
aaaa thank u so much!!!! i also have the brainrot so bad ahah i'm glad to be of service
IF U DRAW IT ID DIE bless u bless u omg. no pressure but absolutely do tag me in it if u decide to post smth like that
For post-canon hcs I don't think I have anything that controversial/revolutionary but I do have some Thoughts. Well, we pretty much know that Ryunosuke is going to help reform the Japanese legal system. I feel like Susato is def going to help him and maybe even appear in court as Ryutaro a few more times (though ideally they'll be able to allow women to appear in court)
Susato def has a long-term relationship with Haori (maybe even lifelong, you know how historical gays are), she's a lesbian in my hc so def never marries a man (her father understands and is supportive ofc). I feel as if she also has some influence in martial arts circles in Japan! I'm not quite sure which martial art she's supposed to have studied (considering the time period and her background I'm guessing it would've been a form of jujutsu, but I'm not an expert by any means) but at the time of and after the Meiji restoration there was a lot of movement into modern martial arts such as judo so maybe she could be involved with that. And also have helped the progress of women in those fields!
Otherwise I feel like both Susato and Ryunosuke move between Japan and England quite frequently as they remain involved in the legal and social worlds of both countries. As technology progresses this will become a lot easier (though I'm sure WWI and growing geopolitical tensions might make things difficult from a practical perspective). I do feel like Susato might be more rooted in Japan and Ryunosuke more rooted in England but they both have strong ties to both countries. I think it would help if their family in England came to visit Japan more frequently too, aha
(This is mildly off-track but honestly at this point I'm thinking abt Sholmes (yes, I use the official translation for him bc it's Funny) retiring in Japan alongside Yuujin. for a lot of reasons. yeah. Also off-track but Iris has a very bright future ahead of her in England rather than being tied down by baggage like Herlock, so she would probably remain based there, but visit her father(s) often)
Oh and ofc Asoryuu. Ryunosuke and Kazuma probably travel together a lot and remain in a partnership for the rest of their lives (even if there are some roadblocks and difficulties along the way)
Honestly I'll probably keep thinking about this largely bc I was considering writing a fic exploring Phoenix's connection to his ancestor and also the influence of the events of DGS/TGAA on the modern Ace Attorney world!
oh this became way too long ksdfjdsjkfds my apologies. and this still isn't all of my thoughts rip. thank u for bearing with me lmao

Van Zieks - the Examination, part 4
Warnings: SPOILERSÂ for The Great Ace Attorney: Chronicles. Additional warning for racist sentiments uttered by fictional characters (and screencaps to show these sentiments).
Disclaimer: (see Part 1 for the more detailed disclaimer.) - These posts are not meant to be taken as fact. Everything Iâm outlining stems from my own views and experiences. If you believe that Iâve missed or misinterpreted something, please let me know so I can edit the post accordingly. -The purpose of these posts is an analysis, nothing more. Please do not come into these posts expecting me to either defend Barok van Zieks from haters, nor expecting me to encourage the hatred. - Iâm using the Western release of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles for these posts, but may refer to the original Japanese dialogue of Dai Gyakuten Saiban if needed to compare whatâs said. This also means Iâm using the localized names and localized romanization of the names to stay consistent. -It doesnât matter one bit to me whether you like Barok van Zieks or dislike him. However, I will ask that everyone who comments refrains from attacking real, actual people.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Itâs time to take a close look at Episode 2 of the second game, The Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro!
Episode 2-2: The Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro
Remember how in the last episode we vaguely got Barok on our side near the end of the trial by proving Mrs. Garrideb was actually involved in the crime? ⌠Yeah. Forget that progress. It's being undone. Case 2-2 is the first case of the second game which features Barok, which unfortunately means he needs to be 'reintroduced' to the audience and it takes him back several steps in his growth. It makes sense, I suppose, it would've been weird starting a new game with him already being lightly on Ryu's side. Even so, it's a bit insulting how this case acts as if the chronologically previous one accomplished nothing.
So anyway, this case flashbacks to something which supposedly happened right after the first game's fourth case. The day after Soseki's acquittal, even. Turns out, Soseki awoke to find one of the other tenants in his building dead and asked Ryu for help, but (S)Holmes tagged along. Gregson is at the crime scene, keeping an eye on the place and on Soseki in particular since he's suspicious. (Sure, Gregson. Sure. Has nothing to do with the Reaper's curse, probably.) After some investigation with (S)Holmes, Gregson has enough evidence to actually arrest Soseki, which definitely feels like a step backwards. A bit later, it turns out the victim is Not Actually Dead Yet. Again! The Great Ace Attorney really enjoys throwing us for a loop by pretending we're in for another murder case.
Anyway, during the course of the investigation, I found two mentions of Van Zieks. The first is when you investigate the broken glasses and bottles in the victim's room. Susato is immediately reminded of Lord van Zieks.
And when examining Garrideb's old army uniform, Susato points out it might suit Lord van Zieks.
Haha, as if his usual outfit isn't ostentatious enough already. So we learn that Susato doesn't have a very high opinion of him at all, and I should hope it's not still related to that time he called detective novels pathetic. It's fun of them to refer to him in an investigation that he's not involved in in any way, especially when they don't know yet that he's the prosecution again.
Speaking to Soseki in the gaol, we're once again told that he's had a dreadful time in England so far. He sees foreigners everywhere and he's sure they're all laughing at him. He's been so on edge the past year that he's moved 'more times than he can remember'. So once again, we're reminded that racial prejudice in 1900s England is a focal point of this game's story. Once the conversation is over, Gregson appears to let the gang know that the victim has regained consciousness and is accusing Soseki of poisoning him. We're going to trial for an attempted murder charge, y'all!
The next day, in the defendant's lobby, Susato comes bursting in with the dreadful news that Barok van Zieks has once again taken on the prosecution. It's definitely safe to assume now that either Ryu or Soseki is the reason he's taking on these not-really-murder trials when he normally wouldn't. As I mentioned before, this is his reintroduction in the second game and so the game feels compelled to remind the player of what went down in case 1-4:
He sure did! The game also once again reminds us what the Reaper's Curse entails, and that perhaps that's the reason why Soseki is on trial yet again. He's doomed, perhaps. Susato also informs us that (S)Holmes is running late, just as he was two days ago, and Ryu thinks that's a good thing because if the Great Detective were there, Ryu might come to rely on his help.
⌠I suppose? He already relies on Susato for help and I feel like that would warrant far more 'preying' from Van Zieks than relying on a male, adult British detective for help. Though knowing (S)Holmes, he'd end up stealing the show and taking the words from Ryu's mouth, but that doesn't seem to be what Ryu's worried about here. I suppose the main point to take away from this remark is that Ryu wants to do as much as he can by himself. He wants to appear strong in front of Van Zieks to avoid presenting an easy target, and I think this might actually be the first time we see a sentiment like that from him. Is he afraid of Van Zieks? Does he actually care about the man's opinion? Anyway, he swears to show Van Zieks what a Japanese lawyer can do.
Inside the courtroom, Van Zieks does the usual prosecutor spiel about how the defense needs to be ready for defeat. Ryu thinks to himself that Van Zieks has a particular animosity towards Japanese people for some reason.
Good thing we got a second game in the series, eh? So because the defendant was on trial only two days ago, the same jurors were chosen where possible. The only juror not returning is Mrs. Garrideb, who's too busy being in prison. Her spot is now taken by a very fancy lady we later learn to be the wife of the Altamont Gas Company's owner. She may as well be the CEO herself with how she's acting, though. Anyway, Van Zieks addresses the jurors directly.
âHowever, the innocent verdict afforded to this eccentric Nipponese before... has had dire consequences. Did the accused repent for his wrongdoing in that affair? Far from it. Instead, he used his freedom to perpetrate a most blood-curdling crime!â
Van Zieks makes record time by taking off his cloak immediately after this line. He's gone straight into overdrive. The witnesses summoned this time are Inspector Gregson and... Soseki? It's very irregular for the defendant to be testifying, especially this early in the trial and especially by the prosecution's request. I can't really make much of it. It feels like the only reason Soseki is testifying is for this joke:
Also found when examining the testimony is a remark from Van Zieks that I honestly found shocking in how ferocious and scummy it is.
Unnecessary, that remark. It didn't need to exist at all in my opinion. So after Ryu shatters the testimony and scatters Gregson's fish 'n chips, Van Zieks calmly pours himself a glass of wine. I have to be honest, by now whenever he does this I'm left wondering what he'll do next. Will he crush the chalice? Will he throw it? Will he actually take a sip? The versatility of the action and unpredictable nature of Van Zieks add a bit of suspense. Turns out, his mind wandered during the testimony.
And then he ends up crushing the glass in his hand anyway. Alas, poor chalice. We knew it. So after a bit of debating back and forth about whether Shamspeare drank the supposedly-poisoned-tea after Soseki left the room, Van Zieks suddenly falls silent. We get three different, consecutive frames of him going â......â and when the judge asks what's wrong, he says this:
Supersonic hearing, this one. That is, unless the carriage entered the courthouse and literally pulled up in the hallway outside the room? Haven't we learned our lesson from the last time a carriage was driven into the Old Bailey?! So Shamspeare was apparently subpoenaed by the prosecution and has shown up to testify (with his doctor's permission). Bad news for us, since he's the one accusing Soseki in the first place. There's also a second witness to support Shamspeare's insistence there were no other visitors to the room and therefore only Soseki could have poisoned him. After that testimony is over, Van Zieks gets his wish and all the jurors vote guilty.
Van Zieks really seems to think that Soseki is a terrible person deserving of justice, huh? He was right there during the previous trial, saw Ryu prove without a shadow of a doubt that Soseki was innocent and still insists that justice will be done âthis timeâ. Calm the heck down man, you're the one who sided with us when Mrs. Garrideb needed to testify, remember? And here comes another example of the game pretending the previous trials didn't leave an impact; when the Summation Examination is brought up, it's with disdain and this remark:
Bro, we used the Summation Examination successfully like five times already. Sit your butt down and watch the show. The jurors once again give prejudiced reasons for their decisions:
And unfortunately, instead of changing their minds by proving Soseki is a morally upstanding, innocent citizen, Ryu instead gets through this Summation Examination by basically proving Shamspeare is a worse person than Soseki. That's... not the direction you should be taking here, narrative. After convincing four of the jurors that Shamspeare is a fishy liar, Van Zieks flings another chalice of wine in frustration. The judge still thinks he could technically pass a ruling on the trial, since the new information didn't exactly disprove that Soseki is the culprit, but the jurors have been influenced so thoroughly that they can't let this new info go ignored. Testimony from the Altamont Company is allowed! Van Zieks thinks it's a waste of time, of course, and if this were reality it would be. Since it's an Ace Attorney game, we know Shamspeare's gas thievery is bound to somehow be related to the incident. Van Zieks flings yet another chalice after hearing the testimony (how many has it been already? Five?) and very shortly after, he tosses the entire bottle over his shoulder. Susato points out that he seems to be in a violent mood. I feel like someone must've pissed in his oatmeal that morning, because I've got no real explanation for why his character regressed this badly in the course of what chronologically was only two days.
Van Zieks flings two more chalices as the testimony progresses to prove that Shamspeare made fake coins to fool the gas meter. At the end of it all, he supposedly 'throws his hand up in despair and happened to catch his hallowed bottle along the way', flinging yet another one of those into the gallery. I'm starting to feel very bad for the people seated behind him now. Is the game overdoing these quirky animations to compensate for his regressed attitude? Because I'm not sure it's working... Van Zieks continues to insist that the situation hasn't changed and only Soseki could have poisoned the victim, so he calls for immediate adjucation. The game gives Ryu the option to either object or wait and see, and I have to be honest, this gave me pause. After what happened with the penalties in case 1-4, I was sure Van Zieks might dish out more punishment for waiting and seeing. Turns out, he doesn't. Ryu points out that Shamspeare likely used the tea to make these fake frozen coins of his, meaning there's still tea left at the scene of the crime which can be tested for poison.
Head in my hands right now. Again, I get it, they basically had to reintroduce Van Zieks to newcomers of the game (however few there might've been) so they had to regress him a bit, but I really don't like this. He honestly felt like he'd grown at the end of 1-4 and the game's not only undone it, it feels like they've made him even more of a scumbag. This line and this gesture honestly doesnât quite correspond with the character established in the previous game. Anyway, court adjourned till the next day so the police can test the tea for poison.
During the investigation segment, we get a conversation that I'd quite honestly forgotten even exists. Turns out, (S)Holmes and Van Zieks are acquainted! ...or are they? (S)Holmes says he 'must pass the time of day with Mr. Reaper again, as it's been too long' and when asked whether they're acquainted, (S)Holmes replies that there isn't a person in the world who doesn't know his name, expertly dodging the question. Naturally, a new conversation topic opens up about it, so we can still attempt to needle more details out of him.
He explains the history of the Reaper's curse a bit more. Previous defendants found not-guilty would 'disappear from the capital' by falling under a passing carriage, drowning in the Thames, succumbing to a sudden fever... Etc. Susato points out that if those rumors are true, then surely the obvious conclusion would be that they were killed by Van Zieks's own hand. (S)Holmes points out that's impossible, since Van Zieks was already investigated on the matter before and for every single incident, he had a solid alibi. (This... doesn't disprove Van Zieks had anything to do with it, but okay (S)Holmes. Sure.) (S)Holmes also rubs it in yet again that Van Zieks retired from the courts five years ago and didn't return until the day Naruhodo arrived. I honestly don't know why they keep bringing that 5 year hiatus up in every single case, because as far as I can recall it was never fully explained or relevant.
I love how âfoul smellâ is wedged in-between those two topics as if it's also related. Anyway the conversation continues when Ryu brings up that Van Zieks seems to have a particular disdain for Japanese people. Susato demands to know whether (S)Holmes knows a bit more about it and while he's silent at first, he relents and tells us a tale (which will apparently be forgotten by Ryu and Susato in case 1-5). Van Zieks âchose to enter the legal profession ten years ago, but before that time, the man's closest companion hailed from the empire of Japanâ. Which is a wording that baffles me, because it implies that Van Zieks chose to enter the legal profession at the same moment that Japanese person betrayed him, which we know is not the case. He was already in training to be a prosecutor before that, otherwise how could he possibly have prosecuted the Professor trial? Ryu is shocked and asks to know more, but (S)Holmes says the veil on the events from the past will be lifted soon enough. I'll get back to the implications of what this means for Van Zieks's backstory when we hit this exact same reveal in case 1-5.
Van Zieks is mentioned very little in the rest of the investigation segments. We only learn that he tasked Gregson with finding new clues, much to Gregson's dismay, as there isn't much to be found. The Inspector does immediately leap at new information when we uncover it, which implies he's eager to either please Van Zieks or avoid being scolded by him. I'm assuming the latter, but it's also possible Gregson feels guilty over the whole Reaper thing and Klint's autopsy, and is now compensating by working his hardest to fulfill Van Zieks's requests.
At the very end of the investigation, when evening falls, (S)Holmes reminds us that âit'll be hard to escape the grip of our friend, Mr. Reaperâ. The next day, in the defendant's lobby just before the trial begins, Ryu thinks to himself that he doesn't believe in the legend of the Reaper any more than he believes in the convict's curse Soseki keeps mentioning. What's interesting here is that Ryu isn't dreading the confrontation anymore. After the McGilded trial he seemed genuinely intimidated by the concept of going up against Van Zieks (not because of the racism but because of what happened to his first defendant), but now he's not so hesitant anymore. He's beginning to see that Van Zieks can be defeated, that the Reaper thing is nonsense and that protecting his client is a fight worth fighting.
Into the courtroom we go for day 2 of the trial! When the judge asks about the results of the tea test, Van Zieks is silent for a moment. He pours himself a glass of wine, asking for a moment to âsavour a liquid of a more sanguine hueâ, then refers to Gregson for the full report. Gregson confirms no poison was found in the tea remains, but the prosecution wouldn't be the prosecution (and the game would be pretty boring) if they didn't have a backup plan. When Ryu proclaims Soseki is innocent, Van Zieks accuses him of jumping to conclusions, âa typical Nipponese reactionâ. It's also a typical prosecution reaction to be hypocritical, no surprises here. He throws his chalice (first one of the day) and summons Shamspeare back to the stand to testify about how Soseki's unpoisoned and undrank cup of tea had been used to make the ice coins.
There's some lines here that I thought I might as well include:
âYet on occasion, tedium distracts me and I pour more times than I intended until the bottle is dry.â
You know, it occurs to me that this drink is pretty much confirmed to be wine. He's very extra when talking about it himself, but he had his silly little wine analogies in the previous case and Susato referred to his glasses as âwine glassesâ. And you would think it's obvious that it's wine, but we know Ace Attorney's long history with 'grape juice'. Either way, this dialogue leaves a pretty harsh implication that Van Zieks drinks alcohol simply to distract himself from troublesome moods. Sure, he says âtediumâ, but this is a stoic prosecutor in the year 1900. They referred to depression as âmelancholiaâ back then, and since he doesn't appear to have any friends, I expect he experiences âtediumâ quite often outside the courtroom. He apparently set a rule for himself not to fill his glass more than seven times during a trial which, in turn, implies he's aware any more would cause problems. All of this is moot, of course, since 80% of the wine he pours for himself ends up on the floor between shards of glass. Still, though... Zieks, are you okay?
I don't think he is, because he pulls a very dirty trick here. Ryu proves Soseki drank all his tea and therefore it couldn't possibly have been used, so Van Zieks insinuates to Shamspeare that perhaps he misremembered using the tea from Soseki's cup and instead used tea still left in the teapot. An excuse Shamspeare happily takes, of course. Not gonna lie, I got angry, not because it's a dirty trick but because it's inconsistent. This is the very same character who all but dragged Mrs. Garrideb down from the juror bench to testify when it became clear she likely threw a knife out the window. And now he's feeding slippery excuses to a man who's very clearly lying about all sorts of things? What??? And remember this incident, because I'm going to be referring back to it later.
He crushes another chalice, removes his cloak and continues to insist that we should believe this thieving liar at the witness stand. The jurors for some reason buy the baloney served to them on a tinfoil platter and even twist Ryu's sentiments around, with some bloke going as far as to interpret the situation as 'the lawyer lad believes anyone who steals gas deserves to be poisoned'. Summation Examination gets very funky this time around, with the outcome being that Shamspeare probably blew the gas pipes (s-snerk) and the poison was laced on the pipe.
Van Zieks pours himself a glass of wine and pretty much immediately flings it, saying these are all empty assertions without a shred of proof. When Ryu presents the picture with the skin prints, Van Zieks once again breaks the rule of the prosecution staying silent during Summation Examination to point out that skin prints cannot be used as evidence, since that method is not recognized by the court (yet). Aaand he crushes yet another chalice in his hand.
Susato claims it was never meant to be used as official evidence, it was only a tool to demonstrate a new possibility to the jury. Jumping through some loopholes here, we are, since the picture is clearly in our Court Record as evidence. But, well, the prosecution cheats too so what's the harm? Some jurors vote not-guilty, but there's still one more that needs convincing on order to keep the trial going. Ryu says he has a witness who's already testified that the pipe-blowing incident did indeed occur that night, as Soseki stated the other day before the court that his stove went out in the dead of night. (Hang on, is this why the narrative made him testify alongside Gregson?) With that the majority of the jury votes not-guilty and the trial has to continue, but Van Zieks is extra rattled now. (Another bottle goes soaring.)
He once again reminds the court that skin prints aren't admissible evidence and therefore, there is no real proof Shamspeare put his mouth to the pipes (ghghhh I'm sorry this is such a silly thing to have to type out). Ryu asks for an investigative team to test the mouth of the gas pipe for poison, but since it would've evaporated by now, that's a no-go. Also, Van Zieks says that âwhat appears to be simple is my Nipponese friend's mindâ and that's a scumbag point. Ryu attempts to turn the trial around by claiming that Shamspeare attempted to kill Soseki, making the defendant the victim, but Van Zieks ain't having it. The aggrieved being the accused is an interesting notion, but doesn't change what actually happened. In fact, if anything, it establishes a motive for Soseki to lay a trap for Shamspeare. Because who else could have known about the gas pipe trickery and put the poison there, right? Why, the true culprit, of course.
Our man Van Zieks really doesn't like (S)Holmes, huh? A tidbit which the games will never bother to explain! Either way, Ryu raises the name of Olive Green, the victim of the previous case. And I gotta say, I do genuinely like the way they integrated these two Clouded Kokoro cases together. The chronology of everything that went down is very fun to decipher, but long story short, Olive Green was at Briar Road the day she was stabbed for a reason and knows more about the 'convict curse' Soseki and Garrideb kept mentioning, so let's drag her into court! Van Zieks agrees to subpoena Miss Green in order to 'see his Nipponese friend's farce through to its conclusion'.
So during intermission some more evidence is handed to Ryu and when trial resumes, Van Zieks continues to be his usual self.
âThe prosecution has tried to extend every courtesy to this amateur newcomer from dubious Eastern shores.â
Ryu sweats bullets as he meekly thanks Van Zieks â(for his backhanded consideration)â, but once again the judge is the one to call Van Zieks out on his attitude.
Amazing. It's so refreshing to see a judge who actually disagrees with the prosecution's haughty attitude problems and acknowledges it has no place in a courtroom. Nothing against Udgey, because we all love Udgey (and his Canadian brother), but this man actually grows and learns. So Olive Green takes the stand alongside Shamspeare (maybe not the best idea since Ryu just accused her of trying to murder this man) for dual testimony. When Green brings up what a dreadful ordeal the knife to her back was, Van Zieks says this:
Hang on, empathy? He's giving her advice? This reeks of humanization! Green seems taken aback and thanks him for his words, so the sentiment was genuinely accepted. This in itself is a very nice scene to see in action, similar to Van Zieks allowing Roly Beate to keep his job. Unfortunately, Van Zieks's character is in a wild rollercoaster of moral inconsistency during this particular case which sours the experience somewhat. Case in point:
YOOOU hypocrite! This actively angered me, because at the very start of this same trial day he was personally feeding lies to Shamspeare. Now he's warning Green not to lie? It gets even worse a bit later on when Green gets cornered about stealing the note, she asks him whether it could all be some sort of misunderstanding, and he says:
ACTIVELY FEEDING SHAMSPEARE A LIE. THE VERY SAME DAY. I'm all for prosecutors using dirty tactics. It helps to juxtapose them further to the honest defense attorney we play as. However, it needs to be consistent. Either a prosecutor condones a witness's lies to help their case, or they feel that they're above it. The third, most used option is for them to start off condoning it, only to learn that truth takes priority over victory. This sloppy back-and-forth morality that Van Zieks has going on here is insanely frustrating, so it's no wonder some players end up disliking him. It honestly feels as if they rewrote this case so many times, they screwed up the exact growth trajectory Van Zieks has.
Anyway, it seems Van Zieks is suddenly fully on our side now to help Ryu prove that Green was in Shamspeare's room and laced the gas pipe with poison. And I mean help help. When the judge points out that if Green had laced the pipe the very same day she was stabbed, the attempted murder would have happened six days ago. Van Zieks is the one to say âPerhaps not, My Lordâ and explain Briar Road was full of police at that time. At this point, Van Zieks and Ryu (and also Susato) actively start to take turns to explain the proper chronology of events. So the defense and the prosecution are in perfect sync right now, working together to explain the whodunnit. This is the ideal outcome to any trial, usually not seen until the last case of the game, so it's curious that this dynamic abruptly shows itself in a case like this. Van Zieks does still have one moment of gaslighting when he claims Ryu may have inhaled some dubious gas, causing his judgment to be clouded, since there's no motive behind Shamspeare's attempts on his fellow lodgers. A matter that's very easily resolved, of course. Once the name of Selden is brought up, Van Zieks continues our little game of back-and-forth-truth-reveal until (S)Holmes shows his face.
âYour usual haunts are the filthy backstreets of the capital, are they not?â
To which (S)Holmes replies that it's been too long, and Van Zieks's complexion has worsened since last they met. Alright, so Van Zieks and (S)Holmes definitely have met in person before, some undetermined amount of time ago. You'd think that going by (S)Holmes's friendly attitude they might've even been friends once, but our great detective is like that towards everyone. This is evidenced by an earlier encounter with Gregson where (S)Holmes insists they're friends and Gregson says that they're not friends, to which (S)Holmes quietly agrees. So really, this little exchange tells us nothing about the history between the great detective and the Reaper.
Some shenaniganry, a breakdown and admittance to guilt later, the court is finally ready to deem Soseki innocent. Van Zieks once again has some interesting lines here:
âAnd one I certainly didn't envisage walking... with you.â
Considering he attempted to trip us up for most of this walk up until the very last stretch, I don't like this remark very much. It feels very unearned. This is another one of those things that would've been more suitable in the last case of the game, but instead it's being crammed into a messy mid-game moment with the pretense that Van Zieks learned a lesson about being our ally.
In the defendant's lobby, the game basically gives the exact same dialogue as at the end of the original Clouded Kokoro case; that Soseki is returning to Japan and hopes to pen his own literature there, with the rest of the cast pointing out that the Reaper's Curse must factor into his decision to some degree. So we're still holding onto that question of whether Soseki will escape an untimely death or not. Anyone who's already played the last case of the first game will know the answer, of course.
So to summarize... I genuinely didn't enjoy Van Zieks's portrayal in this case. It really feels as if something went horribly wrong and they got some notes mixed up about where his character was already headed in the previous game. It's a crying shame. There was a lot of potential for a case set between 1-4 and 1-5, but they really dropped the ball when it comes to consistency and I've no doubt that it reflected badly on people's opinions of him. Though I think when we return to the first game for The Unspeakable Story, everything will right itself out again to some degree. Stay tuned!

Matt Giguereâs Top 25 DS Games
Itâs strange to think Nintendo, once again, had to prove themselves in the handheld space after the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance handily served every bit of competition it faced. Yet in 2004, the Nintendo DS faced an uphill battle to show that having the best and fastest hardware wouldnât necessarily result in the best sales. 16 years and 154 million units later, the legacy of the DS is strong, evident in the deluge of smartphone and mobile games that rely on a touch interface. Itâs a shame Nintendo and other publishers are not being better stewards to their catalogues of games as there are still many that are only playable on the original hardware, and few seem to make the jump to the current set of consoles and computers. Still, it is easy to find an original DS that works and there are still plenty of cheap titles to pick up. Hereâs a selection of my favorite games to hit the handheld.
1. Meteos
Can a puzzle game top Tetris? Â Honestly, thanks to the minds of Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Masahiro Sakurai, Meteos manages to blast past the mesosphere and comes the closest to a space rendezvous with the original falling brick puzzler. What makes it fun to play? While it can get rather hectic and fast paced, the touch screen makes matching three or more pieces a cinch. Blasting off these little âmeteosâ using rocket propulsion and fighting against the forces of gravity creates a very addictive hook with some variety that keeps it from being stale. It is a simple and effective puzzle game that showcases why a touch-based interface can work for some games better than what button presses can do. Add in easy to use single cart multiplayer and the single-player Star Trip mode to keep you sharp, and you have a puzzle game for the ages. Â
2. Elite Beat Agents
Imagine being stuck in an impossible situation, like having to face down a runaway golem, or sneak into a corporate office using your ninja powers? Who do you call to help in this situation? This is a job for the Elite Beat Agents: A government agency that cheers you on to the grooves of radio hits from the â70s to the â00s. The idea of playing a rhythm game where you have to tap and slide didnât sit well with my snobbish DDR and Guitar Hero ways. Why tap a screen when I can âdanceâ and ârock out?â Little did I know this was just as valid a way to feel the music and beat out a jam, and soon after I was feeling the hand cramps of too much furious tapping while I carefully made sure I didn't âOuendanâ the bottom screen. Thereâs a very strange energy to this game that permeates from the different scenarios to the beat of the soundtrack. I might not dig every song served in the playlist, but I canât help but try and top my score on Sk8er Boi for the 100th time! With all the trouble in the world, maybe we need more games (and people) like EBA these days.
3. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Oh Advance Wars, your time was too short over here. But hey! At least we were given a great first outing on the DS, and all these years later, it is still a blast to play. Using the second screen to quickly glance at unit and area information is a welcomed addition, but Second Front battles add a new dimension to the core strategy game that really sells the top screen. Throw in all the CO Tag Powers and a map editor built for a touch interface, and itâs hard to see how anything can top this release of Advance Wars. But seriously Intelligent Systems and Nintendo, please give the franchise one more shot! Â
4. Tetris DS
Yeah, it's Tetris. But also, itâs Tetris! Maybe it is one of those âskips a generationâ thing, as you can kind of plot the best versions of portable Tetris are on the GameBoy, the DS, and the Switch. Tetris DS may be sacrilegious to some with its hold options and infinity spin technique, but this is what I think makes this version unique beyond the various modes and dual screen support. To me it creates a faster version of Tetris that is easy to get into, but can be a fun challenge to master. The addition of Nintendo-themed boards to go with the different modes of play not seen in other versions also adds to this unique addition to the Tetris line. Looking for a version of Tetris with more to do than just the base game? Tetris DS has the most to offer. Â
5. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
This game should have been a hit. Maybe the marketing hyped this game up too much? Maybe more people were spoiled by the full 3D realization of the GTA formula with GTA 3? Maybe the music wasnât the same without the radio hits? Maybe if the synthwave revival had hit the scene sooner it wouldâve helped? Whatever the case, this is a gem of a GTA game. While it misses out on the full production of the home console and PSP âStoriesâ line (I think full voice acting would have helped this version of the game immensely,) just about every aspect of the big brother version is here in this miniature version of Liberty City. From hijacking cars to outrunning the fuzz, this top-down 3D GTA gives a full helping of the open world mayhem the series is known for. The bottom screen minigames can get a touch annoying, but they hardly get in the way like many other games on the DS. Rounding out this game is the drug peddling economy minigame. Not only does it fit the setting and overall style of the game, but  it enables a great opportunity for emergent gameplay to unfold with big risks and big gains. It baffles me* how Rockstar wonât develop this further in their gamesâ single player campaigns. Check it out, as itâs still rather cheap on the DS and is also available on the PSP and most modern mobile devices. *Iâm clearly ignoring the real money cash flow of online microtransactions. 6. Kirby: Canvas Curse
7. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
8. Mario Kart DS
9. Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck
10. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
11. WarioWare Touched!
12. Star Fox Command
13. Mario and Luigi: Bowserâs Inside Story
14. 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
15. Final Fantasy IV
16. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
17. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!
18. The World Ends with You
19. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
20. Mega Man XZ
21. Pokemon Black/White
22. Photo Dojo
23. Style Savvy
24. New Super Mario Bros
25. The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass

Cafe Aroma Â
It finally made sense to Phoenix. As he was staring at the two of them chatting in their own little world along with the light blush that appeared on Franziskaâs face, the strings that Maya pulled were actually the heart strings of the young manager.
âWho would have thoughtâŚâ Phoenix brought his hot cup of coffee to his mouth, gingerly taking a sip before setting it back down. Phoenix casted his gaze at the man that sat across from him. He wished that the two of them could talk as animatedly as the other pair did.
The cafe Maya chose for the four of them to meet at was one she often frequented, Cafe Aroma. In fact, she went there so often that the majority of the employees would recognize Mayaâs vibrant voice the moment she walked through the door with the little jingle of the overhead bell. It was a short distance away from the studio-- about a ten minute walk from the front gate. And it was because of this distance that it would be no uncommon feat if one saw a celebrity here. The first thing one would notice when opening the door was the warm and rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air. The entire cafe gave off a very intimate atmosphere, further accentuated by the warm, cozy array of colours that painted the entire place; the dark cocoa brown wooden panels that hugged the bottom portion of the walls paired with a lighter-- almost beige shade that filled in the space above it. Above each black stained table with the exception of the widow seats that faced outward towards the street, several abstract paintings aligned the walls, most of them too abstract for Phoenix to even tell what they were. From the dim lighting, to the warm comforting atmosphere, one could stay here for hours while listening to the soft piano they played over the speakers.
All of that was nice and all, but what really got Phoenixâs attention were their cinnamon sugar donuts. Seriously, paired with their signature blend, they were amazing.
Taking a bite of the fried pastry, Phoenix dusted his crumbs off on his pants before trying to engage in small talk with the man. âSo,â he awkwardly laughed, scratching the back of his head like he usually did when he was nervous. âThis cafeâs nice, isnât it?â
âQuite.â Edgeworth responded in a deadpanned tone, taking a sip from his own mug, one filled with tea instead of coffee.
Phoenix took another sip in hopes that it would dispel the awkward atmosphere from the two before attempting to strike up a conversation once more, âSo⌠How long have you been acting?â He asked, which he instantly regretted right after because he already knew the answer. He inwardly cringed at himself, âNice going, Phoenix. You just had to ask.â
Edgeworth paused momentarily, giving his answer a thought before he spoke. âI canât quite remember, but I started sometime when I was six.â
Phoenix was pleasantly surprised at the honest response. It seemed that Edgeworth truly had a passion for the art that he put the majority of his life into. He couldnât help but notice the way his eyes softened as it looked like he was reminiscing upon the several memories he had created throughout his career. Phoenix made a mental note, talking about acting was the way to get Edgeworth to speak to him. After all, they both had it in common seeing how it was both of their livelihoods (though one was more successful than the other).
âWow, you mustâve acted in a lot of movies, huhâŚâ Phoenix trailed off, when suddenly another question popped into his head. He wanted to keep the conversation going as much as he could, even if it meant he sounded a little bit like an interviewer. âWhat was your favourite movie to work on?â
A pause once more, followed by an answer. âThere are several movies that Iâve enjoyed working on, but the one I particularly liked working on was The School of Dreams.â
âOh! Thatâs one of my favourite movies! An oldie, but a classic. But funny you should say that becauseâŚâ  Phoenix stroked his chin. âI donât remember you being in itâŚâ
Edgeworth paused mid-motion as he was taking a sip from his mug. He set it down, pointing his eyes into one of the glares he had shot at Phoenix the moment they first met. Phoenix seemed to have offended him. âI was one of the main characters, Wright.â
Suddenly, it all came back to him. The grey hair, those stone grey eyes⌠How did he blank on such an important detail? It was one of the first movies he ever remembered watching. In fact, he could even recall the exact time in his life he watched itâŚ
It was a Saturday afternoon in his sophomore year of high school. A sleepy Phoenix who had not a single clue what he was going to do after high school found himself alone at home that day. Sitting on the couch as he cradled a bowl of cereal and milk with one arm and held the TV remote in his other hand, he flipped it to any random channel he found, stopping when he saw the title of the movie pop up on the screen. Sure, he missed the opening of the movie, but there was at least the rest of the movie to enjoy-- and enjoy he did. As a young Phoenix continued to watch, he couldnât help but notice how phenomenal the actor who looked to be the same age as him was. His eyes gravitated towards him, as if the young man on the screen shined the brightest in the movie. He knew nothing about acting and once it was done, all he could do was remain awestruck.
This movie revolved around a delinquentâplayed by the young Miles Edgeworthâwho continues to get mixed up with the wrong crowds at school. Without telling his parents anything, he continues to live a life where he receives blow by blow and delivers blow by blow to those who seek to challenge him until he is the most feared high schooler among his peers. One day, he meets a boy who transfers into his class and changes his life for the better. By the end of the movie, the two of them are the best friends and plan on attending the same university together. Not only did the transfer student teach the delinquent boy how warm it was to have a friend that understands you, but more importantly, the feeling of belonging he had always dreamed of having with someone. It was a beautiful and touching story of how the two helped each other grow individually, as well as together.
Phoenix recalled trying to blink the tears that pricked his eyes away. He had never felt so moved by a movie before. At that moment, something in his soul had ignited, as if he had finally found what he truly wanted to do. So, he wanted to follow the footsteps of the young man portraying the delinquent and become an actor of the same caliber.
âWho would have thought that same actor that inspired you would become your co-workerâŚâ He was a bit shocked at how fate had a funny way of playing tricks on people.
It took a moment for him to recollect his thoughts before he spoke again, âOh⌠Thatâs right thatâs right-- heh, no pun intended. How could I have forgotten?â He let out an awkward chuckle to mask the heat he felt creeping up onto his face, dusting his cheeks a rosy pink. It would feel a bit embarrassing to admit that watching a movie that Edgeworth starred in when he was younger was the reason as to why he became an actor after that blunder, so he decided it was best to stay quiet on the matter.
He saw Edgeworth roll his eyes at the pun he made with his own last name. Get it, ârightâ, âWrightâ? It was the oldest joke in Phoenixâs book. Usually, this elicited two reactions from the people he told it to: they either chuckled a little bit because the realization dawned upon them that they sounded the same, or they awkwardly chuckled alongside him in order not to make him feel bad at such a lousy pun. This man surely was neither of those people.
âThough honestly, I donât know how you do it,â Phoenix looked down at the table at his hands clasped together. He was about to say something sort of embarrassing, but he might as well. It wasnât like he didnât make himself look out to be a fool already or anything. âYouâve brought so many characters to life over the years, but Iâm still having trouble trying to figure out what I should do to make Ruth Liss believable.â
Edgeworth cleared his throat, âWell, it certainly isnât an easy task, Wright. After all, there are a lot of eyes on us to make sure we do it right.â
âYeah, there are.â Phoenix agreed. In the end, that was the goal for all actors once they picked up a script. It was their job to bring a character to life. But that was something he definitely needed to work on. Just then, an idea popped into his mind. What Phoenix was about to say was indeed, a long shot, but at least he could say he tried. âSo⌠since you know all the ropes⌠I was wondering if you could, you know⌠give me some advice maybe? Or maybe we could practice together some time?â
Ever so slightly, Edgeworthâs eyes widened. He seemed taken aback, which made Phoenix nervous. Would he decline? Accept? The man looked as if he had the response on the tip of his tongue, when an oddly familiar ringtone sounded from across the table.
Maya gasped, âIs that the Steel Samurai opening?!â
Then, the most unexpected thing happened. He witnessed Edgeworth fish his phone out from his pants pocket, then after checking the caller id with a tsk, set the phone on the table, completely disregarding the call he received on his personal cell phone a few seconds ago. The ringtone went silent, leaving Mayaâs voice to be the only thing ringing in Phoenixâs ears.
âMr. Edgeworth, youâre a Steel Samurai fan too?!â Mayaâs eyes were practically sparkling. One glimpse at her could tell Phoenix that she was ecstatic. Â
âHere we go againâŚâ Every time Maya happened to meet another fellow Steel Samurai fan, she would lock them into conversing with her about it. This was not a hard task though, as Maya was the one who tended to carry the conversation when speaking about her favourite show. Usually when this occurred, Phoenix would be waiting for at least half an hour.
âPerhaps a littleâŚâ Edgeworth mumbled. Was it Phoenix, or did he look slightly embarrassed?
âA little?!â Maya scooted her chair closer to Phoenix, their shoulders touching as she reached over to point at the dangling charm that was attached to his cellphone. âYou even have the limited edition steel Steel Samurai phone strap?! How did you even get one of those?! I tried to have Nick get me one, but they sold out just as he was about to get to the front of the line.â She looked at him, her eyebrows furrowed and cheeks puffed up.
âHey, it wasnât my fault someone couldnât leave the house on time.â Phoenix retaliated.
âYeah, it was you!â Maya accused. âYou couldnât find where you put your house keys!â
Phoenix paused, that was right. He was the one at fault. â... Oh, youâre right. Sorry, Maya.â
She crossed her arms, âWhen they release the steeler Steel Samurai limited edition keychain, you owe me one.â
â... How could something be âsteeler than steelâ?!â
Phoenix sighed, âAlright, alright, I do. Next time, Iâll just ask Will instead.â Since he was close enough to the man at this point, he could at least ask him to do him a solid.
âSo, Mr. Edgeworth, you like the Steel Samurai too?â Maya turned the conversation back to him with absolute delight evident on her face.
âItâs not like that-â
âIndeed he does.â Franziska interjected, cutting Edgeworth off. Her usual smug smirk remained plastered on her face as she rested her chin in her hand, the index finger on her other hand wagging pointedly. âLetâs not forget about the Steel Samurai statue that you have in your office-â
âEnough, Franziska.â Edgeworth snapped back, his face gradually turning redder and redder as the conversation continued.
Taking this new information into account, an idea popped into Phoenixâs mind. If he knew Will Powers, the man who played the Steel Samurai himself, then perhaps he could strike a deal⌠âEdgeworth, if I got you a Steel Samurai autograph, would you practice together with me?â
Not a single second passed when, âI donât suppose I have a reason to refuse such an offer.â He answered, a bit too eagerly. âFranziska and Ms. Maya can work out the details later, but I believe I should have some time next week.â
âGreat, Iâll see you then,â Phoenix couldnât help the smile that seeped out onto his face from the satisfaction of success he felt on the inside. He outstretched his hand again. This was the ticket, the way he could finally get some hands-on experience. With Edgeworthâs guidance, he was going to make Ruth Liss the most nefarious man to exist.
Much to Phoenixâs surprise, he felt a warm, but firm hand grasp his own. âI, as well.â
As the conversation concluded, Franziska pushed herself up from her chair, âWell, our business here is done. Come now, we have a photoshoot to attend to. That foolish fool will be here any minute with the car.â
âAw, leaving so soon, Franny?â Maya pouted.
âUnfortunately, I must. But next time, I will try to stay longer.â Franziska gave the girl a small, but gentle smile. âOh, and Phoenix WrightâŚâ
Phoenixâs ears picked up on his name being called. âHm? Ow! Ouch! What was that for?!â A cool, leather whip thrashed at him, causing the skin underneath his suit to sting. He had just gotten a thrashing from Franziskaâs whip and for no reason he could think of, at that.
âJust because you sport the face of a fool who deserves it. Now, the two of us will be off.â Grabbing her binder off the table, the two took their leave, leaving a satisfied Phoenix, and a satisfied Maya to their own devices.
âWell, what did you think, Nick? Isnât Franny just the nicest person in the world?â She asked, her voice as sweet as honey. Phoenix could practically see the hearts in her eyes; she seemed quite smitten with one Franziska von Karma.
âNicest?! She just whipped me!â âShe was⌠something to say the least.â He opted to say instead. He downed the rest of his coffee, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. For some reason, this conversation renewed his spirits, his motivation to get better replenishing by the second.
âA week from now. I have a week to show him what Iâve got!â

 Edgeworthâs Penthouse
Miles Edgeworth was something of a busy man. No matter how many times his schedule had been packed to the brim, the tiredness he would feel after a dayâs work was something that he would never get used to.
He unlocked the door to his place, greeted by the energetic dog he had meticulously raised since he had found the time to do so.
âPess, itâs late. Why arenât you asleep? Were you waiting for me?â Looking down at the dog with loving affection softening all of his facial features, a tender smile graced his face as he reached down to pet the pomeranian nuzzling against his leg. Edgeworthâs heart practically melted when he heard him bark back in response.
He set down his keys and scooped him up in his arms, to which he took the opportunity to lap at his face. He chuckled, âWhat did I do to deserve such a loyal dog?â
Miles gently set Pess back onto the floor, who darted from the front door to the slightly ajar bedroom door. He turned to look back at Miles, which Miles perceived to be his dogâs own way of telling him, âcome hereâ.
Milesâ smile widened, âAlright, alright. I guess itâs time to get ready for bed.â
11:25PM
Miles slipped off his slippers and settled into bed, pulling the covers up over his entire body. At night right before he fell asleep, this was the time his brain was the most alert. Most of the nights where he had trouble falling asleep, for he was afraid of the nightmares that would plague his dreams, he would reflect on the dayâs events, this one being no exception. All in all, talking to the man wasnât such a bad experience in itself. Surely, he was a bit clumsy and awkward and just a little bit of an idiot, but what todayâs conversation showed Miles was how dedicated he was. It truly seemed as if Wright wanted to improve and it made him feel a bit guilty for treating him so coldly the first time he met him. It had been a while since he had interacted with someone as inexperienced as Phoenix. After all, he had been taught that people of his stature shouldnât interact with people like him.
âYou donât need to talk to any of these nobodies; you are leagues above them. Friends? Forget about such a notion. In this industry, you can never trust a single soul.â The words of his late mentor echoed in his mind.
He exhaled at the memory. Hopefully in a week from now, Miles could bestow upon him the advice he had been given throughout his years of being an actor. Would Wright succeed with his help? Miles wasnât so sure, but did he want that Steel Samurai autograph?
Of course.
Hopefully, just hopefully, next week will be a good one.

Kat and I have amazing conversations sometimes and I felt they had to be shared. Also, alienfuckers, dad jokes, Maxwellâs alternative lifestyle and other headcanons, and Ace Attorney: Doug Eiffel edition. Full transcript under the cut.
Gill [Yesterday at 6:05 PM]: On an Unrelated topic: after the finale the crew remembers "OH YEAH, EIFFEL ACTUALLY HAD A FACE-TO-FACE CONVERSATION WITH ALIENS" and now in addition to all the other reasons to want him to Remember they're really freakin' curious to know how that went
Kat [Yesterday at 6:11 PM]: Minkowski: so what did they look like Eiffel: me (They do seem to like his body, they had a few models to choose from when talking to Cutter.)
Gill [Yesterday at 6:13 PM]: Eiffel, probably: at least the aliens think I'm cool I know what was meant by that but your phrasing made me think "In a shocking turn of events, it is the aliens who are attracted to the human." The aliens... are alienfuckers
Kat [Yesterday at 6:17 PM]: I don't think that's their jam but that WOULD be just his luck
Gill [Yesterday at 6:18 PM]: It is unlikely, but also: it would be hilarious
Kat [Yesterday at 6:21 PM]: the aliens keep sending me mental sexts and i crave death
Gill [Yesterday at 6:22 PM]: And lo another shitpost transforms into a fanfic concept, like a humble irradiated lizard becoming Godzilla: "would you fuck your clone?"
Kat [Yesterday at 6:28 PM]: leave him alone has the man not suffered enough
Gill [Yesterday at 6:28 PM]: No
Kat [Yesterday at 6:29 PM]: sigh
Gill [Yesterday at 6:29 PM]: Dance for my amusement, Douglas And also because I earnestly suspect that in the case of Eiffel and an interested alien-consciousness-in-the-form-of-a-Xerox-copy-of-him the answer would end up being "yes"
Kat [Yesterday at 6:34 PM]: idk i feel like it'd be more like "Oh what you spend two fucking years trying to drag us into the star because you can't be assed to make an appearance but you'll teleport across the galaxy for a booty call? Fuck you and I mean that figuratively" later sluts
Gill [Yesterday at 6:36 PM]: Bob is a bad datemate Is this entire train of thought brought on by the fact I still think of the person who expressed they shipped Bob/Eiffel in the tags of the "Take your double to Disneyland" post? Perhaps
Kat [Yesterday at 6:39 PM]: i don't know that you can have this at the same time as 'what if the aliens' bodies are still the people suppressed' without it getting Fucked Up but that's your perogative I guess as long as I don't have to hear about it family can't walk w me tonight so i need to hit the treadmill for a bit. ttyl
Gill [Yesterday at 6:41 PM]: See u in a bit! But ah yes, I hadn't thought of that til you brought it up Points at one explanation of Dear Listener manifestations for some ideas, points at a different explanation for ideas that would become unintentionally Pretty Fucked Up under the first explanation Although there is comedy potential to be found in Eiffel and Eiffel-2 having the "are we down with this" conversation In the /Justin McElroy voice, "someone just discovered they have ~the world's worst fetish~" sense
Kat [Yesterday at 7:33 PM]: a different terrible concept: eiffel with his pop culture references restored will likely be called upon to testify at the united nations
Gill [Yesterday at 7:37 PM]: O h  g o d Ace Attorney: Doug Eiffel edition
Kat [Yesterday at 7:46 PM]: i mean they're gonna have to tell the world SOMEHOW and i'd think the international court would want to know and he's the one with the subconscious recall implanted sidenote if the DL can do that mental transfer could they have just... asked them to reupload whatever their most recent scan of eiffel was there are so many ways around this that's why it failed to get much of an emotional rxn from me
Gill [Yesterday at 7:47 PM]: Minkowski and Lovelace trying to get him to practice his testimony bc if they hit enough subconscious recall triggers they can at LEAST get thru an explanation of the aliens without Eiffel going off into a tangent Once they're off the Dear Listeners' script though all bets are off
Kat [Yesterday at 7:48 PM]: here's a list of preplanned questions your honor we're not responsible if you ask anything else
Gill [Yesterday at 7:51 PM]: Eiffel, maybe: now Goddard didn't send up us there to bring home any xenomorphs but let me tell you, with the Decima project? They might as WELL have let a facehugger get up close and personal with me The translators rapidly swapping notes on late 70's sci-of cinema because a handful of them actually know what he's talking about
Kat [Yesterday at 7:54 PM]: Minkowski headdesking behind him Eiffel English isn't most of these people's first languages
Gill [Yesterday at 7:57 PM]: The news cameras are all dead-focused on Eiffel. He's hit his stride and is picking up steam. "And it was right around the time I was coughing up my liquefied respiratory system that I thought to myself, gee, I'd MUCH rather get a face of alien wing-wong than deal with this!" Minkowski is off to the side. She is visibly restraining herself. No poker face in the world can hide how hard she is longing for death. Whether it is hers or Eiffel's is a subject of contentious debate.
Kat [Yesterday at 7:58 PM]: someone at an elementary school: hey Garcia, is that your dad
Gill [Yesterday at 8:01 PM]: Anne, who was four the last time she saw her father in person, gets one look at the man weaving an intricate Star Wars metaphor out of crimes against humanity and recognizes him instantly, but signs back "I have never seen this guy before in my life."
Kat [Yesterday at 8:04 PM]: good call kiddo
============
Gill [Yesterday at 8:10 PM]: Honestly I love the concept that no matter how much Eiffel may drive them up the wall sometimes the rest of the crew would meet Anne and immediately be ready to kill a man for her sake
Kat [Yesterday at 8:15 PM]: as far as we know he's the only crewmember with kids women in the military... it wouldn't be easy even if you wanted one, which idk if any of them did
Gill [Yesterday at 8:15 PM]: Wait wait, brainwave: it is actually AMAZING that Minkowski had no idea Eiffel had a child because... does he seem like the kind of guy. Who would ever resist a Dad Joke.
Kat [Yesterday at 8:15 PM]: haha fair
Gill [Yesterday at 8:16 PM]: Eiffel: Actually, I have amazing self-restraint when I choose to exercise it. (Various noises of disbelief.) Eiffel: have you ever heard me tell a dad joke? No? I rest my case
Kat [Yesterday at 8:21 PM]: biggest plot hole of the series more like it was too painful a memory but still
Gill [Yesterday at 8:22 PM]: If he ever patches that connection it'll open the floodgates
Kat [Yesterday at 8:26 PM]: He'll become the Maes Hughes of the gang, except with fewer war crimes
Gill [Yesterday at 8:27 PM]: ...has anyone on this crew done war crimes? SI-5 excepted of course, they have obviously done war crimes
Kat [Yesterday at 8:32 PM]: yeah SI5 is war crime central I'm not sure about some of the other stuff executing a prisoner? idk about Minkowski
Gill [Yesterday at 8:32 PM]: Also my thought
Kat [Yesterday at 8:32 PM]: she wasn't a formal pow though it was an ongoing engagement I don't know the rules
Gill [Yesterday at 8:32 PM]: Minkowski Has Done One (1) War Crime (Goddard Futuristics attempts to bring that against her in the court case only for Maxwell to stroll in like lol what's up gang)
Kat [Yesterday at 8:37 PM]: does Goddard in its current incarnation last long enough to sue anyone i mean i think you could sue them for attempted genocide
Gill [Yesterday at 8:38 PM]: Look I have had one semester of business law You were the one who almost went to law school Also re: other characters being parents, the only one I could see going kiiiinda either way on the subject is Lovelace and it wouldn't have been terribly high on her priority list prior to the Hephaestus mission I can see characters having the opinion that they could see Minkowski as a mom but she and her husband both strike me as understanding themselves and one another as being more career-oriented
Kat [Yesterday at 8:44 PM]: yeah if she wanted to rise in the ranks of the military... that would probably be a strike against her
Gill [Yesterday at 8:44 PM] And the implication she's got a Complex about her parents having both left promising careers to raise her Also, Lovelace: Well I always said I could see myself settling down someday, maybe have a family if I met the right person, but when I took the job with Goddard it was legally dubious whether I could actually do that- Eiffel: Because you're an alien? Eiffel: Eiffel: ...wait a sec
Kat [Yesterday at 8:54 PM]: ha It's ok to be gay in space
Gill [Yesterday at 8:56 PM]: Alternatively it's Hera who said that bc didn't connect those dots right away, meanwhile Eiffel saw Lovelace in a flannel shirt once and Knew Immediately Eiffel may be dumb but somehow his Bi-Fi has yet to fail him
Kat [Yesterday at 8:59 PM]: Hera doesn't grasp  human sexuality nuances
Gill [Yesterday at 9:01 PM]: Funny addition to above thought: Eiffel put together that Jacobi was gay after like three days on the Urania, was the only one on the Hephaestus crew to do so, and just never felt it was relevant to bring up Hera, my child... you have much to learn (Also, Hera, probably: I'm experimenting at the moment, I'm looking for a torrent so I can download lesbianism)
Kat [Yesterday at 9:04 PM]: I don't know which option is funnier, that Jacobi is just Really Fucking Obvious but Eiffel was the only one paying attention or that it was super subtle and everyone's like How Did You Do That lovelace's righteous fury overwhelmed her gaydar, she was too mad to go 'same hat'
Gill [Yesterday at 9:07 PM]: Eiffel: I have something to confess to all of you... Jacobi: Eiffel literally not a single person on this ship is straight Eiffel: Oh I was just going to recount a PG version of my wild younger days, let's just say I know a thing or two because I've seen a thing or two.
Kat [Yesterday at 9:07 PM]: Jacobi on Earth: Just matched with myself on Grinder a-fucking-GAIN
Gill [Yesterday at 9:10 PM]: Jacobi: Oh I definitely picked up on it but who wants to go playing into stereotypes by speculating on what may or may not be a promiscuous history? Eiffel: Promiscuous? Look I've got notches in my belt but mostly I just ended up laying in somebody's bathtub at a house party while just conscious enough to nod along to someone else's relationship drama. Eiffel: to several sororities, I was the Gay Bathtub Wizard.
Kat [Yesterday at 9:11 PM]: Maxwell on day one of orientation: So if SI5 is paramilitary what's their stance on alternative lifestyles? Jacobi: I was recruited in a gay bar.
Gill [Yesterday at 9:12 PM]: Her asking the question has my brain going in several different directions
Kat [Yesterday at 9:13 PM]: I think she was recruited right after dadt was repealed... if obama exists in this universe fantasy obama
Gill [Yesterday at 9:15 PM]: One part of my brain: Maxwell is also gay Another part of my brain: Maxwell is exclusively attracted to nonhuman persons Yet another part of my brain, most adjacent to number #2: Maxwell voice, who in their right mind would build a robot that can't fuck? The 4th part of my brain: Maxwell wants to know how chill they'll be with her living exclusively off energy drinks and frozen yogurt for weeks at a time
Kat [Yesterday at 9:15 PM]: honestly I figured whatever it was it was MUCH weirder than just being gay
Gill [Yesterday at 9:15 PM]: Maxwell: I have plans to take over the world with my army of battle bots and rule as their robot queen.
Kat [Yesterday at 9:16 PM]: Maxwell: wait if you were recruited in a gay bar does that mean our boss frequents those or did he just go there to get you Jacobi: Believe me the question haunts me also Jacobi: sounds great i'm in
Gill [Yesterday at 9:16 PM]: Or, Maxwell: I am not joking for an instant when I say that I for one welcome our alien overlords "When I was 13 I tried to get myself abducted by aliens" except it's not a joke it's an actual minor headcanon of mine Also I almost typed "adopted" rather than "abducted" which shows you why Alana would probably want to do that
Kat [Yesterday at 9:19 PM]: she did say she's on bad terms with her family
Gill [Yesterday at 9:20 PM]: She grew up a pastor's kid in a tiny rural town in Montana, hearing that they don't get along is the furthest thing from a surprise to me. The surprise is that Maxwell has a restraining order against them
Kat [Yesterday at 9:21 PM]: tht implies the court found reasonable cause to issue one wack anyway i had a long day, i'm gonna call it a night
Gill [Yesterday at 9:21 PM]: o/ But yeah that Maxwell empathizes with nonhumans, apparently more than with most regular humans, that makes perfect sense to me I can see her frustration with the AI Ethics board in her last job Expressing Their Concerns and her suppressing flashbacks to many a Creationist rant, and trying to keep her eye from twitching visibly, and no I am not projecting I am just coloring in blank spaces in the narrative with my relevant life experience

A Certain Lab, Reprised
lab get lab get lab get lab get LAB GET
Everything around us is either exploding or on fire so Sweetcheeks and I are going to retreat to our space safe, investigating
am I talking about the school exploding or tumblr
we just donât know
Speak of the devil!
âI AM HERE!!!â
âK1-B0 THeRE WAS AN OPEN WINDOW OH MY GOD, THEREâS GLASS EVERYWHERE, OH NO -â
âOH YEAH!â
Didnât really wait at all tbh 8â˛D
Actually all jokes aside Sweetcheeks is right, it was hella cool - and also thank god he was in the hallway and far away from the window! K1-b0 keeps asking if Shuichi is okay but is being incredibly reckless at the same time - what if Shuichi had been showered with that glass? He wouldnât come out of that unscathed. Was that just K1-b0 taking more of his uncorked anger out on the school?
... Hm, though I guess calling it âangerâ isnât quite right. Or, at least, K1-b0âs fluctuating between âangerâ and sort of... more... âgrim determinationâ.
Yeah, he didnât even flinch at being complimented. Heâs got serious tunnel vision right now.
Damn.
LMAO SHUICHIâS SCREEN -
Thereâs only one other place I can think of that qualifies...
DONâT YOU DARE SHUICHI WE FINALLY GOT HERE AND I HAVE QUESTIONS
Oh thank god I want to satisfy my curiosity about the library as much as you do but RANTAROâS TALENT FIRST
Again - damn, K1-b0.
Whoa -
..... This has a very YGO Season 0 vibe. Sorry, thatâs a weird comment. Maybe the better way to describe it is that the words âpunishment gameâ immediately come to mind? Some sorta wheel/puzzle thing in the back, cards hanging from the ceiling, some sort of... table...? Kinda reminds me of a poker table, though thereâs no center to it... Maybe he... really did specialize in death games...?
Actually, if Celeste had an Ultimate Lab, I feel like it would have a similar aesthetic ~
ITâS HIS SOUL ROOM WEâRE IN RANTAROâS SOUL ROOM
âYeah so I never shared with you all, but part of the Ultimate Detective status includes the ability to shoot spirit energy from your finger like a gun -â
I donât think thatâs completely wrong but I feel like the actual talent name is going to be x100 times more ominous. 8â˛D
MAN end-game Himiko is so different than early-game Himiko! Nice to have you onboard - wait, I just realized weâve got a magician sidekick helping us in an investigation. Is this the right time to make an Ace Attorney reference, or -
Okay, huh. Thereâs actually way less to click on than I thought there would be. WHAT IS WITH THE MOST CRYPTIC PEOPLE HAVING THE LEAST INTERACTIVE ROOMS, COME ON DRV3 -
Okay, that laptop first:
Empty laptop.... okay, letâs set that aside for now.
Hereâs the real question - what came first? The K1-b0 we knew for the first five chapters or this K1-b0? Which one should we consider to be the âtrueâ K1-b0? I think the game is implying that this is the real K1-b0, and the one who we knew up until now was a âcontrolledâ version of him - but at the same time, if the antenna was built in with him, could it be considered part of the original design and therefore part-and-parcel of K1-b0?
omfg I just realized the implications of a white-haired boy hearing a voice (that he literally calls âvoiceâ) in his head who may or may not be controlling him behind the scenes be still my heart youâre getting distracted
WHELP THEREâS REALLY ONLY ONE OTHER THING TO CLICK HERE SO -
Like a safe?
......... Omfg it says âBâ and âAâ on them and it has pictograms on them. Is... this going where I think this is going...
Okay Himiko is being our in-game tutorial and noting that the zodiac is on one side and astrological signs are on the other but honestly Iâm fine to skip all past it tbh because there it is, thereâs our fucking âhorse aâ and âtwin bâ is gemini, Kokichi himself was a gemini, this was where we were going with those hints??? Rantaroâs lab?! idk I just donât find puzzles like this hard I kinda thrive off of symbolism and mythology in general 8â˛D
Wait.... doesnât that mean Kokichi couldnât have been the one to leave those messages behind?!
Okay this was pretty cute so I left this in ~ but straight up two minutes later it was just a string of KACHUNK KACHUNK KACHUNK until I got it open immediately -
.... the symbols are weirdly cute though, hehe ~
Donât worry Sweetcheeks, the only life-threatening time-waster weâll spend all of our time on is fluff text!
Aaaaaaand done. Thanks Kokichi!
MAN I LOVE THESE TWO SPRITES TOGETHER FOR SOME REASON
Ah, so theyâre talking about the stone with âhorse aâ written on it - which... does make me curious, honestly. I think the existence of this safe pretty much confirms that he didnât write the original message... right?
When did the letters start appearing aside from âhorse aâ? Chapter 3? Was that around the time he concocted that particular plan, then?
H-Hey now, heâs also the reason we found the second clue. 8â˛D I mean, it wouldnât have been terrible to go through 12 different combinations with âhorse aâ determined, but it wouldnât have been ideal.
i bet you can buy that, that is literally perfect DR merch
ITâS
THE VIDEO
THE VIDEO!!!!
yeah Iâm totally going to pull up my old post to see what matches and what doesnât
âOh god I forgot how absolutely stunning he was.â
OH I thought that was an abstract red background, silly me - 8â˛D well, that was probably the point. It might give away the game if we saw something more concrete behind him way back in... what, Chapter 4?
Anyway, more importantly, Rantaro shouldnât have had access to this place... except he clearly did. So... he... must have been here before. And he knew more about the killing game, or seemed to intuitively know more, than anyone else. He... must have done this before. Except he had made it all the way here last time??? So there is a loop of some sort? Though it canât be an outright time loop because otherwise there would be no need to record a video (unless like I considered itâs a âsimulatedâ time loop, aka VR-style like last game)...
This makes me wonder how we saw the video the first time. Was it just another flashback/tease like the meteorites were, before we saw the flashback lights?
I mean, I guess itâs kinda hard for recording!Rantaro to prove, but weâll have to take him at his word here I suppose. 8â˛D
OH
OKAY
WEâRE JUST GOING STRAIGHT INTO IT THEN
are you telling me you were the protagonist in the last killing game
DIDNâT YOU HAVE LIKE, TWO AHOGES TOO
Man, what an asshole move??? Like, okay, Monokumaâs creating the puzzle of the safe which would unlock this video. Fine. But almost half of the class would have to be dead in order for him to get to it! Thereâs no way for him to even start the puzzle at this point, because he wouldnât know it existed! What a huge handicap!
......... Something.... he had.... since the beginning............. Hm. Iâm drawing a blank. I donât remember anything in particular that stands out....
My dead boy, that is an understatement.
AHAHAHA ABOUT THAT....
Now this makes me wonder if he is the only one repeating it or if anyone else is? Well, maybe the mastermind - but like, maybe everyone is repeating it, but only those who âwonâ were able to have better memories, or were just able to retain the memories of the last game better than the others?
Or, hell, if I want to go along with my previous theory about downloading the memories of students, maybe... Rantaro can remember more about his real self? Or something? But everyone else canât?
And if heâs really someone who won the previous one (along with one other person, I suppose), then he knows that for a fact.
???!?! Aaaah this part got cut off last time too - so it was actually cut off in the video, and not just in our flashback?!
âYouâre also dead, which may make things a little bit more difficult, but I still believe in you!â
That at least I expected -
WHAT
OH GOD THERE ARE SO MANY LAYERS TO THIS
like the dramatic irony Iâm sure the fandom has done to death, for example
What about the second person??? Is there a second Ultimate Survivor???? I guess there canât be since everyone else knows their talents but -
wait, if youâre the Ultimate Survivor because you won a killing game, who were you in the last game????
Does this really give him an advantage though??? I guess the information would have been nice but I mean, it obviously didnât do him much good because he got taken out so quickly!
Man this makes me wonder if Kokichi had any inkling of this...
jsyk since I have the screenshots side to side, his expression is different in this video compared to the last one
~ fun facts ~
Yeah, see, the âhe wantedâ part is throwing me off. He participated, sure, and he didnât say he wanted the original one, but he came back for round two and said he wanted it.... but why???? That implies thereâs a purpose to it, and he was okay to gamble his own life - but also, as a person without his memories of this, he wanted to stop the game. If the chip he bet is his own life, the reward must be huge, right? He won these supposed perks for this game, but what did he win for his life outside the game? .... Assuming there is anything outside the game? Is there anything for him outside the game?
HIMIKO DONâT BE RUDE
Yeah, she didnât know the identity of her target. 8â˛\ Also Iâd be sad if it was Kaede in the end. Second also! I know that she ended up being the first chapter killer and Iâm one of the people got taken by surprise by that, but we were in her head for that whole chapter! Her motive made sense - but for her to end up being the mastermind now? That wouldnât make sense, based on what we know of her, memory shenanigans aside!
That would require the mastermind to have knowledge of Shuichi and Kaedeâs plan then, right? So they would have had to draw Rantaro to the library somehow, so he would get caught in Kaedeâs trap...
It... should be one of a kind, considering the circumstances...
Yeah Iâm still wracking my brain and not coming up with anything there. Could it have to do with his necklace? It did make me think of that âsoldier tagâ present, about remembering someone who they lost. That would be an incredibly appropriate, if not cruel, âsurvivorâs perkâ present for someone who survived a killing game.
Man are we going to get a new flashback for every place we investigate???
OH SHIT ITâS BACK
FLASHBACK LIGHT!!!
you can pry the flashback light animation from my cold dead hands
?!?!?!
Immediate thoughts - generic students. But, are they? Is there any chance that they look generic on the face of it, but are actually representative of people in the class? I donât see anything that could be an immediate match (Korekiyo = masked guy, Kokichi = small guy with similarly shaped hair/short stature/face, Kaito = tall guy, maybe), and they seem to have different VAs - hell, is that Jounouchi (or for the proper DR character, Munakata)âs seiyuu?
...... or the guy with the sick mask could just be sick lmao
Ah, so this is from when the virus began to ravage the population...
That seems like an understatement 8â˛D But at least we know for sure when in the timeline this takes place! Shuichi doesnât seem to know theyâre going to be the only survivors yet, but theyâve already been presumably screened for the Gopher Project which means it is well under way.
Calm down Sigma Klim -
Shuichi hasnât told them he swings both ways, huh.
OH GOD RIGHT IN THE KAITO
DO YOU GET IT YET SHUICHI, YOU ARE THEIR HOPE
Donât mind me, just wanted to make sure Shuichi didnât miss the cryptic message left for him in these memories -
Not only that, but these arenât memories meant to act as a reward for completing a stage like the other ones or even one they found - this was literally forced on them. Itâs supposed to be Monokumaâs weapon against them. So... similar to the motive from the last trial, itâs trying to make them take action...?
And itâs clearly working!
... Maybe it isnât the necklace then. I mean, he was wearing it when he died right??? And his body is gone...
Oh man unless just like everyone else there were copies of it along with the rest of it in his room - except there are 15, one for all the participants for the last game or something -
It might be 50/50 right now??? Thereâs something screwy going on, I just donât know what.

1. No specific fandom, do whatever you feel like 2. I just really like salt, you don't have to do all of them if you don't want to
Itâs cool anon, Iâm just pulling your leg. All in good fun!
Iâll stick to Assassination Classroom because itâd probably be too much salt if it was a fandom free-for-all.
1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*
I see why people ship Karma with Asano â itâs the same reason people ship rival pairs, which is something I donât get â but to me, theyâre always going to be the rivals who find one another insufferable and donât get along. Itâs a personality clash as I think theyâre fundamentally different people.
2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?*
Karma/Nagisa and even then, their friendship is just kind ofâŚâmehâ to me now. In the past, I wouldâve called it a BroTP of mine but Iâm just indifferent now. Yeah, theyâre close and there was that schism/survival game arc and all â I recognize that, but Iâm just tired of seeing it everywhere even when itâs actually presented as strictly friendship.
Iâd rather read about the Nagisa/Sugino BroTP to be honest. Or better yet, the Karma/Sugino BroTP. Hell, give me some Sugino/Kayano friendship.
3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?
No, but that might also be because I generally only follow fandom-specific blogs. I also only follow one AC blog, soâŚ
4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?*
Yes, I have a NoTP â itâs Karma/Nagisa, and yes, itâs the goddamn most popular pairing in the fandom no matter which side of the world youâre on. Just my fucking luck, right?
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*
A pairing that I actually liked? No. A pairing I was indifferent to at first? Yes.
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?*
Hahaha. No.
If I hated it to begin with, then I probably had a solid reason as to why, and my opinion wouldnât change so easily.
7. Is there anything you used to like but canât stand now?*
Not a one.
8. Have you received anon hate? What about?*
Never. That might change after this. But I did get an annoyed anon one time when I said Karma and Nakamura arenât actually close. They were actually pretty civil though so no offense taken. I never heard back from anon but I hope they read my response!
9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?
Takaoka, probably⌠Yanagisawa was a scumbag but as a villain, Takaoka was more annoying as far as motives go. Like a goddamn cockroach, he just wonât go away (see: Karasumaâs 2-page manga in Grad Album Time). He also felt like a cartoon villainâŚbut I canât complain too much as the target demographic for AssClass definitely skewed younger.
There arenât really any characters in the series whose guts I absolutely hated though.
10. Most disliked arc? Why?
Oh hell. The space arc right after the schism/survival game arc. Yeah, itâs AssClass weâre talking about, but I can only suspend my disbelief so much. Also, the lull in-between that arc and the final arc where nothing really happened was kind of a chore to read. It was the calm before the storm, but not much happened.
11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesnât? Why?
The fandom doesnât hate him as far as I know, but Sugino doesnât get nearly as much love as anyone that isnât a member of Utatan, Nakamura, or Asano. Is it because heâs just a regular nice guy and people think thatâs boring? Because heâs super ordinary and apparently heterosexual? I guess thatâs Tumblrâs least favourite combination.
Iâm kidding. Donât kill me.
12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesnât? Why?
I donât know if itâs unpopular but I enjoyed the baseball arc with Sugino. Heâs just very likable to me. The themes of friendship and teamwork were recycled constantly, like in the sports festival (Isogaiâs) arc and the culmination of Karmaâs character development in the second semester finals, but it really began with Suginoâs baseball arc, and to me, that one really exemplified the themes best out of them all. They felt like a real rag-tag group of guys working toward a goal together.
13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?
Karma is not a flirt and heâs not a slave to his hormones.
Stop writing him this way.
14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?
Outside of the Ace Attorney fandom, Iâve never been in a fandom that hates on het pairings so much. Iâve seen all the common ones insulted and just trashed in general for the most inane reasons, and the Nagisa/Kayano ship has it the absolute worst, but I digress. The only het pairing people donât seem to shit on is Chiba/Hayami â probably because they mostly only ever interact with one another. Go figure.
Also, this is a thing in every fandom, but seriously, youâll have two characters interact, and even if itâs a completely regular conversation, people suddenly just start shipping it. Itâs like people will ship any character with another character as long as they have even some kind of small connection. âThese characters hate each other? Yeah, letâs ship âem.â âThis character complimented this other character in an offhanded way but they have no other interactions? Yeah, I ship it.â
Iâm not saying âstop having fun, guys,â but itâs a mentality I donât follow.
15. Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?
Some of the villains felt a little too cartoon-y/flat for my tastes, like Takaoka, but as I said earlier, I think AssClass skewed younger despite such a focus on assassination and the entire nature of âkillingâ â most of the time, not literally, of course. They had basically zero redeeming qualities as opposed to antagonists like the Asanos, who were ultimately sympathetic, or even Korosenseiâs apprentice.
16. If you could change anything in the manga/show, what would you change?
Iâm terrible with these questions. My biggest complaint is that in a series with loads and loads of characters, most of them didnât even get fleshed out so I really wouldâve preferred there to be more alternate points of view â make it really feel like an ensemble cast because outside of maybe 2-3 characters, the rest of them only ever got one-and-done chapters. There are so many characters that I wish got more time in the spotlight, but alas.No offense to Nagisa and his fans â I like Nagisa, but especially in the second half of the story, it just felt like the scope narrowed way too much on him and/or Karma when Class E is actually supposed to be treated as a single entity where everyone feels equally important. Kind of like in the problem Karma solved for the final exam.
17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happenâŚ
I wouldnât have had Kayano die only to be brought back to life right after. I get that it was a parallel with Korosensei not being able to save Aguri, and now being able to save her sister Kayano. Still, the whole sheâs dead lol psyche! angle went beyond cheating death; Kayano straight up died and got revived.
At the same time, in the entire series where they had a death fakeout like what we got with Lovro, if Kayano ended up being the only one killed off for real, I wouldâve been upset.
So I wouldâve not had that happen at all. I wouldâve settled for Kayano getting hurt, or being about to get hurt when she tried to help only to have Korosensei cover for her, but not have her literally dying.
18. Does not shipping something âpopularâ mean youâre in denial and/or biased?
Whether you âlikeâ or âdislikeâ a pairing is down to preference.
There are plenty of pairings in other series that have strong evidence behind them and even then, there will be a handful of people from the more popular ship that twist facts to suit their narratives because they donât like opposing pairings. Theyâll even bend fiction into fact to deny actual facts. Thatâs being biased, but I canât even say these people are âin denialâ because a lot of those people honestly do believe theyâre 100% right. Even if you throw a fact in their face, they have some kind of warped excuse ready.
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
Obnoxious, toxic shippers.
20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?
Youâd think that on a salty ask list, the question would be what the most vile ship is, not the purest one.
Come on, guys. Karma/Okuda is obviously the purest. Sarcasm aside, I really do think Karma/Okuda is the purest. Itâs very sweet and genuine. The very guarded Karma can completely drop his walls and open his heart to Okuda and in turn, she watches out for Karma and really wants whatâs best for him.
Putting aside the deadly pranks they can unleash on others, Karma and Okudaâs relationship is definitely pure.
21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?
I donât mind crack ships at all but I would prefer that thereâs something logical that connects the characters involved, even if itâs a crack ship.
22. Popular character you hate?
I donât hate any of the popular characters, but I find that Iâm much more mild about Nakamura than a lot of people in this fandom. I like her, but clearly not as much as everyone else.
23. Unpopular character you love?
Sugino is one of my favourites. No love from the fandom, sadly.
Heâs referred to as Nagisaâs âbest friendâ by official material but it seems the fandom completely buries this. Heâs always written off as a goddamn third wheel to Karma and Nagisa no matter if itâs shippy or just platonic and thatâs such a pet peeve of mine. Official material indicates that Nagisa/Sugino/Karma get along well as a trio, but noooo, fandom seems to have this perception that Karma and Sugino only see one other as a friend-of-a-friend (Nagisa).
I feel that they might not have been friends if not for Nagisa, but after they got to know each other, Karma and Sugino would still be good friends even if Nagisaâs not around.
24. Would you recommend XXX to a friend? Why or why not?
Iâll say yes. For a weekly Jump series, AssClass is a lot more off the wall compared to the usual stuff, but it has your standard life lessons/morals for not just kids, but anyone. Plus itâs short and sweet at ~180 chapters.
25. How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?
I wouldnât change the ending. Korosensei had to die or else it would cheapen the meaning of the story.
26. Most shippable character?
The fandom would say itâs Karma, but I will say itâs someone with a welcoming and adaptable personality like Sugino. Isogai works too.
27. Least shippable character?
Outside of actual villains, probably Asano. This isnât meant as an insult, but itâs hard to find a match for him because of his personality.
I didnât have great answers, but I tried, lol.

This may be a weird question, but I gave up watching the AA anime long ago. What exactly interpretation are you talking about? (re: not using the anime to get into AA)
UHHHH it was sort of just. a mess all around imo, like the fact that I completely forgot it even existed when I was answering that anon says a lot lmao
kinda long and rambly because I honestly canât even remember a ton about the anime below the cut BUT
itâs always going to be hard to try and crunch heavy plot into 20 minute chunks (especially with something as expansive as aa) and when youâre trying to deal with plot, characterization tends to fall waaaay to the side and thatâs what gets me the most - aaâs world/storyline is fun, sure, but if it didnât have engaging characters I wouldnât care nearly as much
and again, I canât remember a lot and what I might be remembering could be wrong but w/e here we gO
edgeworthâs character in particular took some of the worst hits (that part where he fakes collapsing in order to avoid his verdict in 1-4 is so bad and offensive to his character for sO many reASOns aRGHDGHHDG), buuut the others didnât do so hot either; mia got stuck with ugly fanservice-y shots 90% of the time, maya kiiind of got the movie!hermione treatment in some scenes that made me?? in that she intuitively knew the answers to everything/sometimes took important conversations from other characters (add to a character, sure, her brief talk with edgeworth in 1-4 was GREAT because yEAh they were both deeply affected by the tragedy of DL-6, but donât ever detract from another ((I seem to remember her taking over some of phoenixâs more important lines?)), phOENix wEARING THE FEENIE SWEATER IN FDHGHDG TURNABOUT BIG TOP LIKE GOOD JOB GUYS, YOU SCROLLED THE WIKI AND KNOW THAT UHHHH HE HAD A PINK SWEATER ?? which he would never ever ever EVER wear again, especially not before 3-5 when he finally gets resolution for what happened in college with dahlia/iris? ??
I legit canât even remember a lot about the anime except for the few parts that i thought were actually handled well (again, the signal samurai/keychains and showing how important the class trial was to phoenix), and in general it was justâŚ. not. good. and definitely not good as an introduction to the series. the live action film hits a much better chord for the characters/feel of the series in contrast imho (tho the movie also absolutely has its flaws, the biggest being the change they did to gregory I dgkldh I really really hate that change; the implication that edgeworth spent those 15 years believing his father tampered with evidence like noooOOOoOOOOOOO)
to me, any adaptation of a video game should have a bit more focus on characters rather than plot - plot is of course important too as these adaptations are used a lot of the time to try and draw potentially interested viewers into the full series, but if your characters are shoddy then chances are no oneâs going to care?? about the plot?? because itâs just PLOT?? the court episodes were torture because it was just two people standing around talking lmao who wants to watch that, when itâs a game the player is the driving force, but when itâs an anime?? youâre just watching someone ?? think? and make connections that you, the viewer, arenât privy to because since the anime goes pretty much step-by-step in terms of the case logic, that means /you donât get to see the leaps in logic being made, just what happens after
like. aa is a very static visual novel and you have the power of animation and sound now to tell your story - itâs obvious that the anime didnât have the greatest of budgets and thatâs fine, but a cheap paint-by-number copycat that lost so much of the soul of the original (and, frankly, the point) was tbh just a huge waste of what money it did have oops
also there a million other inconsequential things that just bugged me but w/e Iâm on a roll - the voice acting felt off for a lot of characters (I canât find the clip I was looking for but edgeworthâs voice actor is not that deep sounding naturally, his regular voice is v clear and a bit higher in pitch and honestly I prefer it 100% to the hammed up deep DEEEEEP voice they got him to do/the grownass man for 9 year old edgeworth. edgeworth why did this anime hate you so much), the animation is obviously lacking but lmao thatâs beating a dead horse, the dynamics and character designs and everything just felt wrong, like this was an anime about lawyers I guess, but ace attorney? i donât know her
there are tons of better posts out there regarding how bad this anime was (@azuresquirrel in particular Gets Me in how frustrating the anime was overall and I still get a kick out of going through her aa anime watch tag, though these two posts about turnabout goodbyes are reaaally solid) and just
yeah
if youâre already a fan of aa and know the source material going in and are willing to give this generally ooc poorly paced mess a go, more power to you, but I would never recommend this series to anyone as a starting point; more of a springboard to decide what changes/additions they did make that benefit and are in-line with the story/charactersÂ
#Anonymous#replies#god anon i wish I'd stopped watching the anime but hgdkhg nOPE i stuck it through till the END
