Bossâs Baby
MASTERLIST
Pairings: Hotch x Reader
Warnings: Canon typical violence, Pregnant!Reader, Protective!Hotch, Agent!Reader
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âSo whatâs up with you and Hotch? JJ asks. It was Saturday night, Girlâs Night. You, Penelope, JJ and Emily were all at Garciaâs for a relaxing night.
âWell he asked me to move in. And the wedding plans are going well.â You respond. Hotch and you had been together for almost three years now and were still able to work cases together. The board had decided it was better to keep you on the same team than separate you.
âExciting!â Penelope says handing you a margarita.
âNo thanks.â You say declining politely. You had just found out you were expecting. The girls look at you.
âNo way!â JJ exclaims.
âYour pregnant!â Garcia shouts.
âOh my God!â Prentiss gasps.
âYeah Iâm pregnant.â All the girls get up to hug you individually.
âHave you told Hotch yet?â JJ asks.
âNo Iâm waiting for the right time.â You explain as all your phones buzz. âCrap. Letâs go ladies.â You say as you all hop up and drive over to the BAU.
âWhatâd we got?â You ask as the four of you walk in. Aaron smiles at you when you sit down at the table next to him.
âFive women, raped and held for at least a week. All lived in the same area of L.A., middle class. Y/R. They all have Y/H/C and Y/E/C. And were in their late twenties.â JJ says. Hotch looks to you with concern. Theyâre all exactly like you.
âWheels up in thirty.â Hotch announces as he grabs your arm and drags you into his office.
âWhat the hell Aaron?â You gasp when he shuts his door behind him.
âI want you to sit this one out.â He says in a low voice.
âNo you canât tell me what to do. Hotch, câmon Iâll be fine.â You argue.
âI canât risk losing you, not after what happened with-â Hotch cuts himself off and runs his hands down his face. âPlease do not come.â
âI have to Hotch. I will be fine. Please trust me.â You plead taking his hand in yours and giving him your famous puppy dog eyes hoping heâll not try and pull rank on you. When the two of you began seeing each other you made an agreement to keep work as professional as possible, him pulling rank on you purely because you were his girlfriend and he wanted to keep you extra safe, was not part of that agreement.
âFine.â Hotch growled, pulling his hand out of your grasp. âIâll see you on the plane then, Agent Y/L/N.â With that he turns and stomps out of his office leaving you standing there alone. You felt the color drain from your face. Hotch never addressed you as Agent Y/L/N or even just Agent, no one on the team did it was always just Y/N and once in a while, mainly from Morgan, Y/L/N. Hotch must be really pissed in order to address you that way.
âY/n, you ok?â Garcia asks as she passes you while sheâs leaving the conference room.
âHotch really doesnât want me to go, Gracia he called me Agent Y/L/N.â You feel the words get caught in your throat. Gracia wraps and arm around you and leads you towards your desk.
âHeâs just worried about you. I mean after what happened with Haley can you blame him? And Y/n/n, you do fit the victimology, like exactly. Plus should you really be doing any field work given your-uhh, well your condition?â She points out.
âJJ did. And I was planning on finishing this case and then I was gonna tell him. Please donât say anything to him and Iâll talk to JJ and Emily to make sure they wonât say anything. I promise once this case is over I will tell him. I gotta go to the airport. See you when I get back, Penelope.â You whisper and stand up grabbing your go bag to head out.
âJust promise youâll be careful?â Garcia pleads as she wraps you into a hug.
âOf course. Love you buddy.â You shout as you walk towards the elevator.
âLove you too my precious-firecracker-goddess!â Garcia replies as you walk into the elevator.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TIME SKIP TO AIRPLANE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âWhatâs the connection with these women? I mean I understand the look, but is that it? The way he mutilates the body, it seems personal. And the way he carves âwhoreâ into their lower torso? I mean thereâs got to be something else about these women. What do these three have in common?â You ask.
âIâm looking into it now trying to find a connection but itâs taking a little time. They all had different job types, various relationship statuses. Michelle Connors was a teacher and was in an on again off again relationship, Bridget Anderson was an I.T. analyst and was engaged to a long term boyfriend and lastly Lucy Lawson was a veterinarian and was single. Iâm trying to get access to medical records now but itâs gonna take a little time. The M.E. is still finishing up the autopsies so weâre gonna have to wait on that end as well. He just dumped the bodies.â Garcia explains.
âHe disposed of them within days of each other.â JJ reads.
âAccording to preliminary findings Michelle was killed 15 days ago, Bridget 9 days ago and Lucy 3 days ago. All found within hours of their deaths.â Reid explains out loud.
âHis cooling off period seems to be consistent so far but he should be starting to look soon. We gotta figure out the connection, I mean maybe if we figure it out I could-â You suggest.
âABSOLUTELY NOT!â Hotch shouts, he had been quite the entire plane ride, well until you tried to offer yourself up as bait.
âHotch all I was saying was-â He cuts you off again with a harsh glare.
âIâm sorry Agent Y/L/N, I didnât realize you were promoted. Oh, wait a second you werenât. I make the calls for this team and I said no. No drop it Agent.â Hotch hisses, shutting you down. The team stays quite looking between the two of you curiously.
âYes sir.â You say getting up and moving towards the back of the plane anyway.
After your and Hotchâs little show everyone decided to wait until you all landed to discuss the case more. Midway through the flight the nausea hit and you ran towards the bathroom. Emily and JJ followed to make sure you were alright. JJ stayed with you and helped you get cleaned up, while Emily returned to the main cabin.
âAre you guys alright? You and Hotch I mean. Things seemed a little tense out there,â JJ asks concerned.
âHotch didnât want me to come on the case. We argued about it. I havenât even told him about the, umm, the thing,â you explain quietly.
âMaybe heâs right. I mean even without you being in your condition. It seems really risky and given what happened to Hotch last time,â she points out.
âI know but I donât want other women to get hurt and if I can help out in anyway⌠I will.â You reply.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOTCHâS POV
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I look up when I see Y/n rush to the bathroom. I want to go after her but given our most recent interactions Iâm pretty sure she would just get more upset.
âJJ, Emily could you,â I nodded my head towards the direction Y/n headed in.
âSure,â they reply heading her way.
âWhat the hell is going on with you two?â Rossi asks when the girls are out of earshot.
âI didnât want her on this case. We argued about it.â I admit quietly.
âWhatâs with the whole âAgent Y/L/Nâ thing?â Rossi questions.
âShe wants us to be professional at work,â I say defensively, shrugging my shoulders.
âSo this is your revenge for her doing her job. Pulling rank on her and keeping her at armâs length. Aaron, sheâs your fiance. Talk to her. Getting mad at each other isnât helping and I think you know that. Go talk to her.â Rossi advises as Emily comes back out. Aaron looks up at her.
âWhatâs wrong?â He asks concerned.
âSheâs not feeling to well. I think you should go talk to her. JJ is talking to her now but I think she wants you.â Emily reports. Hotch stands up and moves toward the back of the plan and heads to the bathroom.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
YOUR POV
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âY/n? Are you alright? Can you let me in please?â Hotch asks from outside the bathroom door. JJ looks at you for confirmation, you nod and she opens the door.
âJJ can you give us a minute please?â Hotch requests. JJ turns to you for your reaction.
âItâs fine JJ. Thanks,â you reply quietly. JJ nods and leaves you alone with your fiance.
âAre you alright? Are you sick?â Aaron asks you concerned.
âIâll be fine, Iâm just not feeling to well.â You explain.
âIâm sorry for the way Iâve been behaving. I just donât want to lose another person I love. Another person that Jack loves,â He sighs looking down at his hands.
âIâm sorry too. If you think itâs best I can work from the station and not go into the field on this one,â You offer as a middle ground.
âThank you!â He exclaims, he grabs your face between his hands and plants a hard kiss on your lips. When you break apart he grabs your hand in his and walks you back towards the main cabin and the rest of the team.
âYou good?â Rossi asks when the two of you take your seats.
âYeah weâre all good.â You reply smiling over at Hotch.
âWhen we land I want Morgan and Prentiss to meet with the M.E., Reid and Rossi you go to the dump sites of the victims. JJ, Y/n and myself will go to the local police station and get set up.â Hotch announces. You all nod and you snuggle up with your boyfriend and close your eyes. You spend the rest of the flight attempting to avoid another trip to the bathroom to puke.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TIME SKIP TO THE STATION
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âHowâd it go with the M.E.?â Hotch asked when the team finally had regrouped back at the police station.
âThe women were all in their first trimester of pregnancy.â Emily announced looking towards you. At Emilyâs announcement JJâs head whips towards you, Hotch gives you a strange look as the color drains from your face.
âY/n, are you alright?â Hotch asks you.
âUmm, yeah. How would he have known that they were pregnant? He must have known them somehow?â You try to figure it out. These women had no apparent connections and how could the unsub possibly know about these pregnancies. Then it hits you some type of doctor or therapist maybe, at least that could be a starting point. You call Garcia and put her on speaker phone.
âGarcia can you dig through medical records and see if any of the doctors line up, or maybe a therapist, some type of counselor?â You rattle off ideas.
âLooks like they all saw the same counselor who was a church representative. His name is Geoffrey Lundson. Looks like he was married to a Cathleen Jacobs but she left him and according to this timeline she cheated on him during their marriage and oh my, she was pregnant with her 2nd husband Connor Jacobs, whom she was cheating with. It was a messy divorce, he had a restraining order placed against him and looks like Connor Jacobs also pressed charges of vandalism and stalking.â Jesus, you think you found your man.
âSounds like he could be our man. Maybe I should go in and set up an appointment with him.â You suggest, JJ and Emily look at you terrified.
âAbsolutely not!â Emily shouts.
âNot gonna happen Y/n. Too risky.â JJ agrees.
âHotch câmon. I can wear a wire. You guys can be on watch outside the building. Put a tracker on me for the added precaution.â You plead. You know you can nail this guy. He killed three young pregnant women who, given different circumstances, could easily be you.
âSend me in, instead.â Prentiss suggests.
âYou donât fit the look he wants. I match perfect.â You argue.
âShe has a point, Hotch.â Rossi points out.
âAre you sure about this?â Hotch turns to you, hesitation in his eyes.
âPositive, please Hotch. I canât let this happen to anyone else.â You beg him.
âYou get in you get out. You think something's off you get out asap.â Hotch says sternly.
âHotch-â JJ starts but you cut her off with a sharp glare.
âJJ, I can do this. Letâs go.â You respond curtly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TIME SKIP TO APPOINTMENT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
âSo Ms. Y/L/N, it seems this is your first appointment. Why have you decided to seek counseling?â Geoffrey Lundson asks you.
âI recently found something out and I felt it could use a second opinion.â You explain cryptically attempting to get a read on him.
âWhat would that something be?â He asks curiously.
âI found out Iâm pregnant. I havenât told my fiance yet. Iâm not sure how he will react. He hasnât had the best of luck in the past with learning he will be a parent.â You lied about the last bit obviously. He was thrilled when he found out he was going to be a father when Haley told him. But you had a feeling this guy wanted you to show you were in the wrong.
âWell that is definitely a âsomethingâ.â Lundson remarks. âHe is the father I assume?â
âI think so. Iâm not positive though. There was this other guy but we were much more careful than my fiance and I.â You internally cringe at your lie. You figured if you could mimic his story as much as possible he may make a move.
âThat doesnât seem very healthy. Is he aware that you were having relations with other men?â
âNo.â
âWhy donât we go for a walk?â Shit, this must be how he got the other victims secluded. His office was about a block away from his home. If you can get him to admit something to you and gain more evidence you can nail this guy for what he did to those other women.
âSure.â You force a smile as you agree to his suggestion. He opens the door for you and you walk with him towards his house on the next block.
âWhy are you cheating on him?â
âHeâs kinda boring in bed. And heâs always so distracted with work. He doesnât prioritize me enough. So I found someone on the side who does.â You lie hoping Hotch understands.
âThis is actually my house, why donât we head in there for a little bit?â You try not to let you fear show and nod along with a tight smile, following him into the house. As soon as he gets you in he grabs you and slams you against the door.
âBad whores like you get punished! Your a whore and Iâm gonna show you what happens when your a whore.â He shouts as he tosses you to the ground.
âYouâve done this before, haven't you?â You ask trying to get a confession while you can, Hotch and the team are gonna storm in at any minute.
âYour not the first, no. I punish sluts like you so your man doesnât have to. Iâve already finished three of you whores off. Not knowing who the father of your child is? Thatâs sick! And thatâs why whores like you get eliminated!â He screams slapping you across the face. Just then the door gets busted down and Hotch leads the team in.
âGet away from her!â Hotch shouts and Geoffrey drops the knife and puts his hands up. Hotch rushes towards you and scoops you up into his arms leaving the team to take care of Lundson.
âGeoffrey Lundson you are under arrest for the murders of Michelle Connors, Bridget Anderson, and Lucy LawsonâŚâ Morgan begins to read him his Miranda Rights as Hotch carries you out of earshot.
âWhat did he do to you?â Hotch asks as he sets you down in the back of the ambulance.
âHe just shoved me around and slapped me a little. It didnât get to far but I am glad we got a confession out of him and that you guys came in before it went any further.â You reply.
âMaâam is there any medical concerns we should be aware of?â One of the EMTs asks you and you look at Hotch carefully. This isnât how you wanted him to find out but it seemed unavoidable.
âUmmm, Hotch can you give me a sec?â You ask already knowing his answering.
âIf you think I am leaving you at all in the foreseeable future you are crazy.â He replies not budging an inch.
âI just found out I was pregnant, still in the first trimester.â You reply quietly not taking your eyes off Hotch. You think his eyes are about to bug out of his head at your revelation. He remains quite while the EMTs check you out.
âEverything looks good but I would suggest coming in for an ultrasound just to be sure thereâs nothing wrong with the baby.â The EMT suggests.
âYeah letâs go.â You reply turning your eyes away from Hotch.
âSir, will you be riding along to the hospital?â The EMT asks.
âYes I will.â Hotch responds firmly. Hotch proceeds to climb into the back of the ambulance with you and holds your hand the whole way there. It was a short car ride to the hospital and only takes a few minutes for the doctor to see you.
âLooks like everything is good. You look like your about 10 weeks along. Congrats. You can get dressed and ready to be discharged. Iâll give you some time.â She reports with a smile before leaving you and Hotch alone.
âWhy didnât you tell me right away?â He asks as soon as the door closes.
âI wanted to surprise you. I didnât think I would be as involved in this case as I was. Normally I stay behind. Then when I heard that those other women were pregnant too- I just, ugh- Â Hotch, I just knew you wouldnât let me out in the field if you knew. You barely let me out when you didnât know. In some twist of fate I could have been one of those women. I couldnât risk letting this guy get away and kill more. Iâm sorry.â You explain.
âJust swear to me you will never keep a secret, especially like this, from me again. I love you and I canât lose you. Jack canât lose you. He calls you mom, you made him smile in a way he hadnât smiled since HaleyâŚâ Aaron trailed off shifting his gaze towards the window.
âI know baby.â You reply softly, taking his hand in yours, you place a soft kiss on the back of his hand. He returns his gaze to you.
âI love you and this baby so much, Y/n. No more field work, at least until after the baby has arrived?â He pleads.
âNo more field work until after the baby comes.â You agree sighing softly, it sucked you couldnât be in the field anymore but the reason was pretty good and in the end it was worth it.
âSo how are we gonna tell Jack heâs gonna be a big brother, finally?â Hotch asks with a smirk, ever since you told Jack that the two of you were getting married heâd been asking about getting a brother or sister.
âI donât know but I think heâs gonna be an amazing big brother.â You say pulling Aaron down for a soft kiss on the lips. You were both so excited to be expanding your little family.

âĽď¸Fox Nipped 3âĽď¸
âIs it ready yet?â Fidget asked as she hovered over Reed to peek at the blueprint sketch that he was currently drawing.Â
âNot quite, I'm still working the shape of the bottle. It should be ready in a hour or so.â Reed continues to draw the potion bottle.Â
âOhh, right, right.â
âBe patient, Fidget, Reed really needs to concentrate while he's drawing. I'll let you know when it's ready since I'll be the one crafting it once he's finished.â Haley assured. She gathers up some firewood and coal to fuel the forge for melting the materials in. âAlright, I think I got everything I need for the glass now.â she wipes the sweat away from her forehead then walks over to Reed who was still busy sketching up the blueprint.
âHow's it going so far, honey bunny?â she asked curiously placing a hand on her husbandâs shoulder.
âSo far so good, cinnamon bunny.â He replied to his wife.
On the other side digging a hole in the ground like a dog would do, tossing dirt left and right and kicking it aside with his back legs. Dust sneezed as he got a bit of dirt on his nose, he then shook himself off and continued digging a hole in the ground.
Watching Dustâs every move from afar. âDust, I think the hole is big enough... and if I'm not mistaken I'd say that hole is actually big enough to place a sword in...â Ahrah then realized Dust was sitting right behind him panting. he looked at the hole then back at Dust. âDon't you dare...â Ahrah warned while alarmed since he fingered out what Dust possibly wanted to do with him.Â
Without any hesitation Dust quickly grabbed Ahrah with his teeth and walked on fours to the hole while wagging his tail.
âDust! You better not do what I think you're going to do! Cease this behavior at once!â Ahrah shouted with annoyance. he didn't like the idea of being buried in the dirt and he wasn't about to start liking it now.Â
Dust huffed at Ahrah before burying him in the hole. After burying Ahrah Dust flopped down on the dirt to take a well deserved nap.Â
âThis is so humiliating...â Ahrah muffled from underneath the ground.Â
A couple of hours past before Reed and Haley completed their task together. The potion bottle was finally crafted.
âYaay! You guys did it! Thank you so much!â Fidget cheered as she thanked Reed and Haley. âNow, for your payment.â she smiled as she checked for money, but she suddenly notices she don't have the money to pay them.
âOhh, shoot. I don't have any money for you two... Dust normally pays for everything we purchase. I'm sorry, you guys.â she apologized.
âDon't worry about paying us. We wanted to help Dust get back to his normal self.â Haley smiled.
âYeah, so no payment this time. You're good to be on your way now.â Reed stood beside Haley and held her hand.Â
She held Reedâs hand as well. âMhm, Take care and let us know when Dust is back to himself so Reed and I can go on a double date with you two.Â
âOhh, sure thing! We'd love to.â Fidget accepted.âYou two take care too.â she waved before flying away with the potion bottle in her paws.
âSee you then.â They waved and headed back into their house for some rest after a long day of work.
LaterÂ
âI can't believe he buried you...âÂ
âI can't believe he buried me either.â Ahrah looked over to Serethâs tent. âEverything alright, Sereth?â he asked.
âYes, everything is fine. I've just finished creating the perfume for our friend to sniff... he may not like the scent, but it works very well.â Sereth places the top on the potion battle.Â
Rolling around in the flowers and panting like crazy.
Walks out of his tent holding the potion bottle carefully. He looked over to Dust and facepalm. âFalana, it's worse than I thought it would be.â Walks closer to Dust.Â
Grumbles as he keeps rolling in the flowers.
âDust, muffin... The grumbling challenge is over, Matti won as usual.âÂ
âAlright... as I warned before, he won't like this scent.â Sereth warned yet again before spraying the golden flower perfume that was stored in the potion bottle.Â
Dust grumbled at Sereth before he took a big whiff of the strong foul scent of the golden flower and he immediately comes to his true senses.
âUgh! Wha-What is that revolting scent?!â Dust stood up from the ground quickly and backed away from the foul scent as he holds his nose.âThat smell is burning my nose... What is that?!â
âDust, Dust! You're back to yourself again!â Fidget cheered as she flyed into Dustâs arms.Â
âHuh? I never went anywhere...um, did I?â Dust asked confusedly as he hugged Fidget in his arms.Â
âErm, You were experiencing serious side effects, my friend... worry not, the problem has been solved.âÂ
âWelcome back, Master.â
âWait, I am still confused here, what happened to me exactly?â Dust asked again since he had no idea what happened to him.
âUmm, Weâll tell you later.â All three of them replied nervously.
~FinÂ
Coughs and pats her nose with a tissue. âPhew, I think my flu is finally starting to go away.âÂ
Dust chuckles softly before kissing her forehead. âThat's good to hear, cupcake.âÂ
Dusty and BridgetÂ
Wagged their tiny tails as they approached their mother and father.Â
âWell, hello there.â Fidget scoops the babies into her arms and kissed both of their foreheads, she then snuggles right beside her husband.

âOur little angels.âÂ
âYeah, they're our little muffins and cupcakes.â Dust says as he tickles the babies with his finger.
âMhm, we should have more.â Fidget giggles.
âOf course, but not until these little ones grow up a bit more.â Dust laughed nervously.
âHaha, right.â Fidget laughed nervously along with her husband.

Toni Collette on New 'Fun Mom Dinner,' Finding Both Quality and Quantity in Her Roles

In the easygoing summer comedy Fun Mom Dinner (now in select theaters and on demand), Toni Collette plays a mother of four young boys whoâs totally over the idea of having âmom friendsâ â until, of course, a memorable night of misbehavior with some fellow preschool moms (played by Molly Shannon, Kate Aselton, and Bridget Everett) changes her mind. Collette, who has two children, has no such qualms about befriending other moms. But she does have a problem with being pigeonholed as an actress who plays moms.
âIn the past, Iâve done interviews where they just start the interview saying, âSo you play a mom,ââ the Australian actress told Yahoo Movies. âAnd Iâm like, âI play a really fâing complex human who also has a relationship with a couple of kids sheâs pushed out.ââ Indeed, few actresses on Earth boast resumes so full of diverse, emotionally complex roles, from the social-outcast title character in her breakout film Murielâs Wedding, to her Oscar-nominated performance as Haley Joel Osmentâs desperate mother in The Sixth Sense, to the woman trying to keep her family together without losing her mind in Little Miss Sunshine.  What drew Collette to Fun Mom Dinner â besides the promise of working with other talented, funny women â is that the story isnât about being a good or bad mother, but about how motherhood changes a personâs identity, even when the kids are asleep.
During Fun Mom Dinnerâs New York City press day, Yahoo Movies chatted with Collette about bonding with her co-stars, exercising with a post-childbirth bladder (as her character does in the film), getting recognized on the subway, and juggling an astounding variety of film and TV projects.

So are you having a whirlwind day in New York? Itâs been very busy. I just flew in very late from London last night and I think Iâve had maybe three and a half hours sleep! Anyway, it has been a long day, but itâs so, so wonderful to see all these amazing women that I worked with on the film last year, and to be able to hang out and talk about the experience we had and celebrate it together. Itâs a good thing.
Ten years ago, you had 2 films released; in 2017, the website IMDB says you have 11 projects. Wow, thatâs a lot then!
So do you have a secret identical twin? How does that work? Cardboard cut-outs, and I live in my trailer. [Laughs] No, itâs funny because Iâm playing this character [in Fun Mom Dinner], and weâre a bunch of women who have kids, everybodyâs been talking about âHow do you balance work and life and kids and all of that stuff?â You know, sometimes I really struggle with it, because I love working, and I obviously also love my children. And theyâre the most important thing to me. But I do love working, and if I donât do it I think I am not quite myself, you know? Because itâs a big part of me and I get a lot out of it. What you need to know is, not every film is three months long. For instance, this one was three weeks. So it may say thereâs a lot of films there, but none of them too extensive in terms of the time I have to commit to it.
I watched a screener of the spy thriller Unlocked (in theaters Sept. 1) the same week I saw Fun Mom Dinner â in that one, you have a buzz cut and use a machine gun. It was a funny contrast. I like doing lots of different things. I think thatâs one of the best parts of my job. And I really try to push myself and not be repetitive. After Murielâs Wedding, I remember being offered a character that was kind of similar, and there was just something in my gut that knew not to do it. And Iâm so glad, because if Iâd have done that, I think itâs so easy to be categorized. And I somehow have managed to dodge that bullet.
It seems like a major challenge for actors to escape that kind of rut. Your career is amazing in that sense â I have absolutely no idea what youâll do next. Me too, thatâs the best part about it! [Laughs]
So my favorite thing you do in this whole movie is putting on your sonâs pull-up to do a trampoline workout. Omigod, I forgot about that scene! Thatâs so funny! Ha! Yep. Well let me tell you, I can really relate to that. [Laughs] I mean, having had two kids, exercising becomes an issue. Actually I probably needed that little â I call it them nappy, what do you call it, a diaper? â to be able to do it. But yeah, what a weird type of exercise! Itâs a real thing people do.

I had never seen it, but Iâm guessing if I lived in L.A. Iâd have already taken a class by now. People really get into it out there, Iâve heard. Someone told me what it was called â I canât remember what it is now, itâs a really weird name â and I was like, whatâs that? And they described it and I was like, oh yeah, I did that in a movie! [Laughs] But I donât know if I could do it for an hour. God, that would kill me.
Youâve played a lot of mothers â a lot of very different mothers â Thank you for pointing that out! I love a lot of things about this movie, but one thing I love is that it celebrates who these women are beyond the children in their lives. And in the past, Iâve done interviews where they just start the interview saying, âSo you play a mom.â And Iâm like, âI play a really fâing complex human who also has a relationship with a couple of kids sheâs pushed out.â You know? It doesnât define a person. Itâs a huge part of any parentâs life, but it doesnât define you. And I think thatâs one of the things that these women celebrate on their night out in this movie. And I often have said, you donât go into an interview with Jon Hamm and say, âOh, so Don Draper â you play a father.â Itâs just such a really shây imbalance. And Iâm glad that itâs addressed in this movie, and that itâs about, yes, they are wonderful moms, but they go out and they really connect, not only with each other but with themselves in a way that might have been missing for a long time. Itâs good to remember who you are, beyond your first and biggest responsibility.
I also enjoyed your characterâs knee-jerk reaction against making âmom friends.â Not sure Iâve ever seen that said outright in a film before. I loved that she was so upfront about it, that sheâs not backwards and coming forwards â she just tells it like it is. I have two kids and theyâre both pretty young, so I donât entirely feel the same way, but I love that sheâs so frank about it. I love that sheâs like that about pretty much everything in her life. She lives with a lot of male energy, and I think itâs rubbed off.
The karaoke song in the film â â99 Luftballons,â in German! â was that your pick? No, they chose it, but I was very happy about it because I love that song, too. Singing it in German was a slight challenge. I kind of learned it at the last minute. But karaoke can be a bit sloppy anyway. Although I do think Katie and I kind of nailed the German. Weâll have to see what a German audience thinks of that!
We talked about the wide variety of roles youâve played. When fans approach you, whatâs the role they most often mention? It depends where I am. A lot of people love Muriel. The character of Muriel is very dear to a lot of people still, which is so amazing to me. And itâs kind of beautiful, you know? I think it goes to show that most people do feel like that on the inside, that they related so intensely to that character. Sometimes if Iâm on the subway in New York, it will be Shaft. If I wear my hair a certain way, it will be The Sixth Sense. I lot of people do recognize me from Little Miss Sunshine. Everyoneâs so lovely about it, too, I have to say.
Iâm a big fan of United States of Tara [the Showtime comedy on which Collette played a woman with multiple identities]. Aww, I loved that show so much.
I felt like with that show, you proved you could literally play anything. Do you feel like that role opened things up for you in film? I really donât know. That show just in and of itself was such an amazing opportunity for me, or for any actor to have gotten a chance to do that. And I donât think it will ever happen again. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And not only that, everyone involved was just so lovely, and it was such a positive experience on so many levels. You know, Iâve had a lot of really, really good jobs and I really only try to work on projects I believe in, but that particular one was, it was right up there for me. So â but did it open up things after that? After we shot Season 3, I had my son. And yes, to be honest, I havenât stopped working since then, when I think about it! [Laughs] So maybe youâre right in pointing that out. I never put two and two together. I donât know if it came from that show or what, but thatâs what has, thatâs what tends to have happened now that I look at it, yeah.
It must feel good to have those opportunities just keep increasing exponentially. Maybe it doesnât feel like that, but it looks like that on paper. I still feel really lucky to get the jobs that Iâm offered, I really do, because I know itâs a tough industry. I have actor friends who donât get to work that often, or donât get to work on things that they really believe in, and 99% of the time I do get to do that. And I just really, really honestly feel so grateful. I still enjoy it and it still challenges me. I still try to work on stuff that pushes me a little bit, because you need to keep growing, you know?
Is there any role thatâs still on your wishlist? A Bond villain, something like that? Iâm never good at this question, because really, things are sent to me and it either makes sense or it doesnât. I just think characters are more complex than that, and itâs hard to say âI want to play a character like that.â However, last summer I did play a manipulative bitch and Iâve never done that before, and it was really fun! There was so much to play with. And recently, I filmed a movie that really was the hardest job of my life, this [horror] film called Hereditary with a writer-director called Ari Aster. Gabriel Byrne played my husband, and itâs an intense one. It surprised me every day. I think if Iâd really contemplated it any more before I started, I might have just run the other way, because every day was just so much more full-on than I even anticipated. So I just had to take it one step at a time. But in a perverse way it was really satisfying, even though it was like twisting myself inside out.
And now we have to bring that around to Fun Mom Dinner! So in comparison, Fun Mom Dinner was like⌠It was the most gleeful, joyous, buoyant, satisfying in a completely different way, experience, with like-minded, very creative, smart, savvy, sassy, generous, communicative women. It was just what I needed. I read it, I wanted to have fun, and it couldnât have been more so.
