How to Handle a Nico - Baker's Dozen?
Primary Pairing: NicoMaki Also Starring: Yazawa Siblings, Honoka Words: 523 Rating: G Time Frame: Sometime after Maki graduated HS Prompt: Thirteen
---------
Summary: Nico and Maki buy sweets at Honoka's shop to bring to Nico's siblings
Author's Note: Bonus second entry for the 13th
---------
“Welcome!” Honoka called as her head popped up from behind the counter. “Ah! Nico-chan! Maki-chan! Are you two here to try our new mochi donuts?”
“Yes, we are.” Maki confirmed. “After you hyped them up so much at our last reunion, how could we not?”
Honoka grinned. “They really are good though.”
“That’s why we’d like to take a dozen.” Nico said.
“Oh. Wow.” Honoka blinked.
“We’re taking some to the kids.”
“Ah. And will your mom be wanting some as well?”
“We’ll be sure to leave her two, just like the rest of us are getting.”
“The kids are only getting two each?” Honoka asked as she began to load a box.
“Well yes, there will be six of us so…”
“Why don’t I make it a baker’s dozen and they can split the extra one.”
“You really don’t ha…”
“Of course I don’t.” Honoka closed the lid and stood back up. “Just a little something from one big sister to another.” She slid the box across the counter.
Nico smiled. “Thank you, Honoka.”
---------
“You brought us Pon de Rings?” Cocoa asked excitedly as Nico opened the pastery box to let her siblings make their selections. “From Mister Donut?”
“Even better. Kousaka’s.” Nico stated.
“Honoka-chan made these? Wow!”
“Panda Ring…” Cotarou drawled as he admired the donut he picked.
“They can’t be Pon de Rings if Honaka-san made them.” Cocoro stated.
“Why’s that?” Maki asked, taking her own ring.
“Because Mister Donut trademarked that name.”
“And how does my little sister know such things like trademarks?” Nico asked, amused.
“Someone said so in a FuwaMoco stream.”
“And you just believed a random Ruffian?”
“No, I looked it up after.”
“That’s a good girl.” Nico patted her sister’s head.
“Ruffian? Fuwawhatnow?” Maki asked.
“Twin Vtubers!” Cocoa proclaimed. “They’re super cute! We should watch them together while we eat our Pon de Rings.”
“They’re not Pon de Rings.” Cocoro insisted.
“No, I guess they’re even better.”
“Honoka Rings?” Nico suggested.
“Honoka-chan Rings!” Cocoa cheered, holding up what remained of her ring.
“Hono-chan Rings!” Cotarou mimicked Cocoa.
“Wow, there are lot in the box, Onee-sama.” Cocoro observed.
“I figured we can all have one as a snack now,” Nico explained, “then have another for dessert after dinner. And that would leave two for Mama when she gets home.”
“So who gets the other three?”
“Three?” Nico checked the box. “Honoka said she was giving us an extra for you three to split.”
“Looks like she slipped in a couple more.” Maki commented. “We got fifteen, not thirteen.”
Nico sighed. “You kids owe Honoka a big thank you when you see her next.”
A trio of affirmative responses sounded from the Yazawa siblings.
“Anyway, I’m going to go start dinner.” Nico headed for the kitchen. “Maki-chan, you can join the kids in watching their Fuwawhatever.”
Maki wasn’t quite sure what all the fuss was about for some Vtubers or the like. However, Nico’s siblings seemed excited, so if nothing else, she could watch them enjoy the show. She smiled as the three settled around her and Cocoro set up a tablet and find the stream.

Author's Note Continued: Guess what clips the YouTube algorithm suggested I watch shortly before I wrote this... And if you guessed a certain pair of demon guard dogs, you'd be right. Not complaining, mind. More cuteness in the suggestions is always appreciated.
Anyway, this also turned out to be a good excuse to write the Yazawa siblings again, which is always enjoyable.
And finally, I should more big sis bonding in my LL fics. Nico, Honoka and Eli. Dia and Sarah. Kanata and Emma. I ship the last two in an OT3 with Karin, but some platonic big sis bonding might be fun anyway. Maybe have them tease Karin about her big sis role in the idol club despite there being two actual big sisters.

LL Fantasy Drabble
"So, what? You think you've won just because you got a leg up on me? I can still fight."
Blood dripped from the corner of Nico's lips as she spoke, a biting animosity seeping from every word. Standing over her crumpled figure, sword to chin, was the leader of the A-Rise syndicate devastating Otonokizaka; Kira Tsubasa. She smiled down at Nico peacefully, her friendly disposition contradicted only by the fact that she'd incapacitated Nico moments prior.
"Yazawa-san, please consider the situation you're in. You fought admirably, I'll admit, but this ends here."
Tsubasa grinned devilishly, tilting Nico's head up with the longsword's tip, much to the warlock's chagrin. Icy droplets from the stalactite above fell rhythmically on the ground around them.
"Mmm, it's a shame you didn't join A-Rise, Yazawa-san. You would have made a fierce ally. But as it is... You must know what happens next."
Nico's eyes were bleary, her breathing shallow. One hand clutching the bloody laceration on her abdomen, the other gripping her oaken staff. Try as she might, her limbs were too weak to move.
Mama, Cocoro, Cocoa, Cotaro... Be safe, please...
She looked up at the wretched woman who wounded her, still smiling tenderly down at her as if nothing were wrong. Somehow, that in itself only intensified her anger.
"You can't kill me." Nico hissed. "Not in a way that matters."
Her words, it seemed, only made Tsubasa laugh.
"You may think so, but I assure you, you're wrong." Tsubasa turned to face deeper into the cavern. "Anju! Erena!"
In a matter of moments, two women appeared from the darkness, one of them, clad in white and gold cleric robes, the other in contrasting black heavy armor. Between the two of them, a bound and hooded figure being escorted to Tsubasa's side.
"You see, Yazawa-san, we of A-Rise do our homework - you may not know much about me, but I know plenty about you... And the company you keep."
No, there's no way...

Rated R For Redhead: Time For Class
NicoMaki, Love Live, 1.4K, 2/3
Summary: Nico can't sit still. And let the camping shenanigans begin.
Time For Class
Nico Yazawa couldn't focus. Or Nico wouldn't focus. Or memories of a stubborn redhead kept Nico's brain is whirring like an overheated laptop mode, blocking any progress at finding sources to cite for her paper. Flipping through international fashion, lifestyle and entertainment magazines, all Nico could come up with was how great Maki would look in those designer outfits, those layouts, far hotter than the super hot supermodels draped all over the pages. Why couldn't Nico focus on anything else. Nico's willpower was adamantine. If she didn't want to visualize Maki in...no, that wasn't helping. Of course, Nozomi wanted to use Maki as a model. Had the orgy started yet in Wisconsin?
Nico groaned, muttering about stupidly stubborn redheads, glancing up to see other students staring at her. She didn't want their attention. Was Nico broken? A quick shoving away gesture and most returned to their own research. She should be rehearsing or on stage somewhere getting applause. Or singing karaoke and maxing out her score. Instead, the great Nico Ni was wasting time in a library. What was wrong with Nico's life? Where had it taken a wrong turn? It needed to be fixed. Nico needed to be in Wisconsin where the eye of Nico's current stress storm was probably doing stupidly sexy things with an axe or bubble bath orNico shoved away from the table, tossed the magazines near the student librarian, and headed out the door for the downtown bus. She had a car to borrow.
Although the Nishikino family owned the camp, Umi Sonoda had taken over organizing the wood chopping.
"Please take a seat." Umi stood at the center of a circle of logs and camp chairs, where a fire would be blazing later, melting through the modest layer of snow.
Honoka Kousaka, once everyone else had chosen a seat, raced around with sheets of paper in each hand.
"Take both."
Maki read them. One was a breakdown of the parts of an axe and suggestions for proper grip and stance; the other was instructions for how to split wood properly and safely.
Rin giggled.
Umi glared at Rin.
"If proper attention is not being paid, there will be a quiz."
Honoka groaned.
"So seriooous." Rin stuck out her tongue, "Rin'll be taking pictures. Where's my safety sheet?"
Umi frowned. She had been caught not being completely prepared. She strode quickly to where Rin sat, took one of Rin's pages, turned it over, used a Sharpie to draw a stick figure with an axe, viewed from above, and then drew a circle around it. "Always stay outside the swing circle of the axe."
"Oh, okay." Rin hadn't expected a real answer.
Umi pivoted, "Same goes for you, Nozomi. Do not get distracted by your subjects."
"I'd never put Nozomi in danger." Eli declared.
"You will not be the only axe wielder."
Nozomi moved to the center spot, bumping Umi, who scuttled away, obviously uncomfortable.
"Thank you for that practical guide, Umi. Now, to important matters. I will now be suggesting and demonstrating poses." Nozomi fluttered her eyelashes, "Eli and I practiced them last night."
"NOZOMI!!!
###
The Yazawa home seemed quiet. Nico's siblings must be out. That was good. This would go faster without questions. Nico found her mother sitting a chair, reading a magazine, with random television on in the background. Silence would be too much of a change from daily life. Mrs. Yazawa enjoyed the rare moments she had alone but it didn't seem like home without some bustle. And there was her eldest, agitated. Mrs. Yazawa put aside the magazine and clicked off the television.
Nico didn't even bother with any kind of greeting, "Mama, I need the car."
"Hello, Nico. Welcome home. Why do you need the car?"
"Nico needs to go to Wisconsin."
"Where you friends are having the photoshoot you missed because your paper is late."
How did Mama know? Nico wondered, then realized, "Cocoro told you. And it's not late yet. NIco got an extension."
"Why do you suddenly need to go?"
"Nico just suddenly has a free evening. No rehearsal. No one on campus to talk to."
Mrs. Yazawa got a mischievous glint, "So you're going to spend it with your mama."
"Uh…Mama, I didn't mean…Nico loves you…but...."
"I'll stop teasing you if you tell me what's really going on"
"Fine. Nico will tell you. It's simple. Maki and Nico were talking and Maki said some stuff I don't understand so I need to go talk to her."
"What did you say?"
"Keep your shirt on around Nozomi."
"Are Nozomi and Maki…"
"No, Mama, no." Nico shuddered. "Nozomi has Eli. She's just…" Nico didn't want to say pervy, Or handsy. Nico did not want to be thinking about a pervy or handsy Nozomi, ""Nozomi can't help it, she doesn't think, she just grabs things."
Mrs. Yazawa raised an eyebrow. "Everyone's a consenting adult, right?"
"It's not like that, Mama. Nozomi's camera's doing the grabbing."
"And you think Maki won't be able to express her boundaries."
"She says she doesn't care, it won't bother her, but Nico knows it will."
"Are you two dating?"
Nico wanted to slam her face into something.
"It's complicated."
"Did you ask her to be your girlfriend?"
"No, Mama."
"Then it's not really complicated."
"That's not the problem. Nozomi is the problem. Nico is being chivalrous. Nico is being caring." It was almost a shout. "Maki doesn't understand how…:
"Sit down, Nico."
Nico recognized the tone of a parental wall. "Yes, mama."
"You can't make boundaries or decisions for other people."
"But Maki's being naive. And Nozomi's gonna take advantage of it."
"You can't know what Maki's thinking, Nico. Do you respect her?"
"Of course."
"Then actually trust her to do what she wants."
"I do. I really do." Nico bounced back up, "I don't trust Nozomi."
"Nico, what's really going on?"
"It's the truth, Mama. Nico is just being a good…friend."
"But you want to be more."
Nico slumped back down. "Yes."
"You think Maki will say no if you ask her…"
"I don't know, Mama. I don't even know what to ask. There've been dates, we've been having fun, Nico is cute and charming but then Maki says "even if…"
Nico's mother had never seen her daughter look so…unsure.
"Maki isn't like me or anyone I've ever met."
"That's good, right?" That's why you like her?"
Nico flushed. "Yeah. Sometimes when she looks at Nico, her eyes get so soft and she's pretty and sharp and smart and sexy and she glows, Mama, and Nico can't look anywhere else and..." Nico stopped, her eyes closed, Maki vivid in her memory.
Nico's mom stared at her daughter for long moments, then reached out to pull her in for a hug, "It really is complicated, isn't it."
Nico kept her eyes closed, enjoying the solidity of her biggest fan. But that wouldn't solve the Maki puzzle. As soon as her mom released her, Nico leaned forward, elbows on knees, head on hands,
"Nico's tired. Every day's packed, Waa Mu's been great, and Maki's like opening night every night, exciting and energizing and more than everything Nico wants. But what if she doesn't ever…" Nico didn't really want to take the metaphor to any of the places it could go. She stumbled to a finish, "ever want a ticket to see the show."
Mrs. Yazawa pushed her daughter's hair back, "You won't know if you don't talk to her."
"Nico's scared. Everything could change."
Mrs. Yazawa laughed, a wry acknowledgement that there were truths her daughter was currently ignoring, "I bet everything already has. Right now, we're talking about a girl, not your latest role or how many agents will contact you after Waa Mu or how many hours of singing practice you put in today. That's new."
"Maki helps with singing. She's so good at the piano." Nico smiled, "Maki helps with everything, sometimes before Nico can ask."
"I'm glad, Nico. You should have people who help you. I've always worried you'd never let anyone get close enough."
Softly. "Nico didn't mean to."
"That's when it happens. That's when everything changes. Feelings sneak in."
"Oh." Subdued Nico was unnatural. But this wasn't anything her mother could fix for her. Or wanted to. This was Nico's crossroads.
Nico's mom pulled her back into a hug, "Take the car. Talk to Maki."
"Thanks, Mama."
"Don't forget to listen too."
"Nico listens all the time. Nico has rabbit ears," Nico raised her hands above her head and flicked them back and forth.
"Cute ones too."
Nico giggled.
"Now go see if you're a out of town preview show or a five star Broadway opening night."
"Audiences always love Nico." Nico grinned at her mother. "Maki will too."
"That's the Nico I raised."
A/N: As we know, it's not a real lonelypond jam if you don't get at least one more chapter than planned ; )

Nico Yazawa
Tumblr media
★~ Name: Nico Yazawa ★~ Age: |17-18| ★~ Height: 154 cm ★~ Weight: W 58, ★~ Birthday: July 22 ★~ Blood type: A ★~School : Otonokizaka High School ★~ Idol group : µ's ★~Likes: Sweets ★~ Dislikes: Spicy food ★~ Horoscope: (Cancer) ★~ Hometown:Tokyo ★~ Series : Love Live!
Tagged~ niconico
Tumblr media
Interesting Facts:
★~She is a member of BiBi, a sub-unit under μ's.
★~She has two younger sisters named Cocoro and Cocoa, and a younger brother Cotaro. Nico's father has been out of the picture, and so her mother is constantly out of the house in order to work and financially provide needs for her four children.
★~Nico appears to be the rapper of BiBi.
★~Nico is the only member of μ's Maki addresses with honorifics, specifically "Nico-chan".
★~The number "25" is often seen on items, such as Nico's wristband and Cotaro's shirt, as well as meat (Niku) at a price of 2525 yen as a reference to Nico's first name while the number "25252" refers to her catchphrase.
★~Nico's surname Yazawa means "arrow" (矢) (ya) and "marsh" (澤) (sawa/zawa).
About:
Due to being in a single-parent household, money is tight and their living space is compact. Because Nico's mother is nearly never home, Nico has long since assumed the role of their household's head (or possibly sole) caretaker.
Nico is the eldest by the largest age gap, with her three siblings being all much younger than her and closest to age with each other. Because of this, Nico is accustomed to and skilled in cooking and housekeeping.
Most importantly, however, she seems to care very much for her younger siblings, and will do anything to make them smile. She will go as far as to lie in order to make them happy.
This is discovered when Nico's siblings express their belief that the other members are Nico's backup dancers, which was a lie that Nico told them and substantiated with altered μ's posters in which she was the center (switched with Honoka). Unaware of the truth, Cocoro, Cocoa, and Cotaro act happy, proud and inspired by the idea of their oldest sister's unparalleled success.
All of this information comes as a surprise to the other members, as it runs contrary to her often self-centered behavior at school and during idol work.
However, the revelation of Nico's home life provides insight as to why Nico's specific personality traits and values developed and how they inform her behavior within μ's.
Her brazen desire for the spotlight and to be doted on is a product of not being afforded such attention due to her home situation.
Nico's obsession with making others smile with her catchphrase ("Nico Nico Nii!" or にっこにっこにー) is related to when Nico would try her hardest to cheer up her family members during hardships.
Normally, Nico has quite an abrasive personality, but when she takes on her alternate personality, she becomes a happy, upbeat character who is always smiling, often saying her catchphrase, "Nico Nico Nii!" (にっこにっこにー), accompanied with a pose.
She usually thinks a bit highly of herself but, despite that, she is also caring.
her obsession with performative, over-the-top happiness and cuteness is because of the difficulty of her home situation.
Her family circumstances and the role she plays in it have led her to fixate on both making sure as many people as possible are smiling and also seeking and receiving attention and praise. This manifests in her idol obsession and subsequent persona.
Nico was the Idol Research Club's president (before she passed on the role to Hanayo) and is interested in fashion. Therefore, she designs the group's outfits with Kotori. Her special skill is hair arrangement.

I'm going to break character on this one so badly sorry guys. D4DJ and localisation in one post makes me do the neuron activation gif.
Weronika is an unusual choice as you said, normally ヴェロニカ would be translated as Veronica. As you said, Weronika is a possible localisation of ヴェロニカ, and it is an actual name (it's the Polish version of Veronika), although there's nothing to suggest that Weronika is polish in the game and as far as we know at the moment she's 100% American. The name sticks out a lot from the other Abyssmare names (ik there's Neo but the name ties in with her arc and I think that was on purpose), so I think it might've been picked on the basis of "sounds foreign" and also she kinda has a wolf-themed outfit so maybe they thought it sounded like werewolf.
Haya-coco is the official romanisation here's a screenshot
Tumblr media
I'm not a localisation expert or have any actual traning in the matter outside reading the blogs about Ace Attorney localisation and a language qualification from high school, but something I've noticed is that こ or コ (both "ko") are quite often localised as "co". An example would be the Yazawa sisters from Love Live: Nico, Cocoro, Cocoa. In hiragana, their names are spelt にこ, こころ and ここあ, which if you were to romanise them exactly, would be Niko, Kokoro, and Kokoa. Their younger brother Cotaro has his name written in Kanji, but again it would normally be localised as Kotaro or Kotarou. The C is probably just to make it look more "Western", since a lot of english names use a C to make a K sound, such as Cate or Caiden.
Another example of making names sound more Western is when Rs are localised as Ls, because Japan doesn't have an L. An example would be Arale from that bandori vtuber project that never happened, whose name is written as あられ (Arare).
Sometimes names are straight up turned into English ones through localisation such as Eli, Sarah and Leah from Love Live, whose names are actually the Japanese names Eri, Seira and Ria, which just so happen to be the usual phonetic spellings of the names they are given in the official localisation. Happens even in Vocaloid with Len and Luka, whose names are actually the Japanese names Ren and Ruka (no source for this but if you think about it enough why are their names english when everyone else is Japanese? it's not like the others have Kanji/Hiragana names - all the cryptonloids have names in kana - so my theory is that they just did it to make them sound cool. if anyone has a source to disprove this hmu i barely know shit about vocaloid despite running a project sekai blog).
Anyway that got offtopic, back to the letter C. I think Ichica was maybe a localisation that was considered by staff at one point. As I said, using a C instead of a K is not out of the question. However I think in this instance it was a mistake, since they'd already confirmed the official romanised names at this point. Someone probably just uploaded the file with the wrong name by accident.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the Japanese Project SEKAI website, some image files spell Ichika's name as "Ichica". The file for her chibi SNS icon and SNS icon border both use this spelling.
It's possible that Ichica was the original intended localisation of her name, but it seems unlikely since her name is spelt as Ichika in the Leo/need trailer.

Author Notes
A short fic for a day from “The Daily Life of Loving a Really Cute but Dense Vampire”
FYI, NicoNozoPana are vampires, Rin is human, and they are trying to make sure Rin does not try to befriend bats cos talking bats would be vampires and they wouldn't want Rin getting hurt/killed.
------------------------------------------------------
Ch1: Great Nico-ni is Worried
------------------------------------------------------
Nico, now in her bat form, flaps her wings hard and frantically as she searched for her siblings Cocoro and Cocoa who was supposed to be babysat by Nozomi. And yet, when she got home, there were missing heads as she could only find Cotarou sleeping in his room.
Spotting her friend with the purple tinted ears, finally, Nico-bat shouts angrily. “NOZOMI!!!”
“Ah, Nicocchi~”
“No. NOT. NOT ‘Ah, Nicocchi’!! Where the h-” Nico-bat stops herself as her sisters were around. “Where on this big, fat, wide world did you go?? With Cocoa and Cocoro! Do you have any idea how badly I freaked out to find my sisters missing???”
Nico-bat raged and ranted on, heaving and flapping her wings furiously.
Nozomi-bat patiently waited with a passive grin for Nico to be done before commenting. “Oh dear, you look like a bat out of Hell, Nicocchi~ You need to calm down~”
“Nozomi!” Nico-bat hissed.
The purple tinted ears bat was a look of jolly. “It’s not a bad word.”
“Not a bad word!” Cocoa-bat echoed and flapped her wings in excitement.
“That’s for me to decide.” Nico-bat glared at Nozomi and gave her younger sister a look which got Cocoa to quiet down, her sister Cocoro offering an understanding gaze.
And Nozomi-bat was going to rebut when a whistle reaches the flying vampires’ ears – a code whistle they came up with Hanayo to catch each other’s attention for emergencies.
They both shared a look, alert, before looking down to see Hanayo walking with Rin.
The shy girl looks up, using her eyes to signal that they caught a starry-eyed Rin looking up at them with awe and growing excitement to see more possible bat for friends.
Nico-bat groans and looks to a sure to be smiling Nozomi-bat and her two cute but slowly being led astray sisters. “Home. Now.”
The playful trio sang in sync. “Kay~”
------------------------------------------------------
Author Notes
This might be cuter if you already know how Rin has met Honoka-bat and is extremely excitable to hang with Honoka-bat XD But eh, I hope y'all love it nonetheless.
And love Nico despite her worrying XD It can't be helped that this is a world with Cold Vampires who would kill =v=

Some Sad Nico Yazawa and Family Headcanons… and NicoMaki too.
-Mama and Papa Yazawa had Nico at a young age.
-Papa Yazawa taught Nico the Nico-Nico-Nii because he said it makes him happy when she does that. He also said that he wishes that she’s always smiling because her smile is contagious.
-Nico was an only child for a while. Not until she was 11, at least. Mama and Papa Yazawa were looking after their finances especially since they didn’t have stable jobs at the time. When they both had stable jobs they decided to add to the family thus, Cocoro and Cocoa. Three years after them, Cotaro was born.
-Unfortunately, Papa Yazawa died from an accident when Nico was 14. Cocoa and Cocoro are both 3. Cotaro was barely a year old. Nico only cried for a short while because her father doesn’t want her to be sad and in an effort to cheer people up, the Nico Nico Nii stuck with Nico. She tried to make people smile during her father’s funeral while saying that her father would be sad if they send him off like that.
-Because Mama Yazawa was the only one earning money, their finances became unstable again and she had to take two jobs.
-The smol Yazawas were left to an old lady neighbor when Nico has to go to school and Mama Yazawa is at work. The old lady was sweet but she wouldn’t talk much. Cotarou’s lack of communication while growing up caused his selective mutism. Nico realizes this and tries to talk to him more. He is slowly improving thus, he mimics the word that he thinks is the most important in the sentence of whoever said it.
-Nico while she loves her family so much and they love her as well, is lonely. She grew up taking care of her siblings who are much younger than her, doing the work around the house because her mom’s rarely home. She never got to bond with friends so she always felt left out. Her past time was to watch TV and that also caused her love for idols.
-Nico hates the feeling of being pitied. That’s why she refused to let people know the state she lives in and why she constantly lies about it. This insecurity came from her previous friends who approached her because they felt bad for her. It worsened when the previous members of the idol research club left and explained that they only felt bad which is why they stuck with her.
-Nico unknowingly gravitated towards Maki because they’re both lonely and Nico didn’t want anyone to feel that way because she knows how it feels. She likes to tease Maki because it lets Maki know that there’s this person that won’t leave her alone (be it in a friendly or in an annoying way). At night though, they’d be texting each other about their problems and Nico would always remind Maki that she’s not alone. Maki appreciates it but they’re both really bad at socializing so they end up just awkwardly looking at each other… and catching each other looking… argument ensues (thus, Zurui yo Magnetic Today was born).
-The night when Nico and Maki were out together on that one episode was the death anniversary of Papa Yazawa. Maki finds Nico outside, at the playground near their apartment because that’s where she and Papa Yazawa used to play. To take Nico’s mind off things, they decide to just practice and do whatever.
-Nico developed feelings for Maki just soon after. The Seven Wonders of Otonokizaka School Idol Diary was Nico’s dumb attempt to scare Maki in hope that she’ll cling onto her (like, y'know how some people would conspire to watch horror movies or go on horror houses with their dates?). That didn’t end well, not entirely because Nico didn’t expect that nothing would happen (if anything, she wanted to protect Maki) but because she didn’t expect that Maki would bolt out and leave her. That’s when she realized how dependent she has been on Maki. She kinda panics there and cries, something she doesn’t like doing. Of all the μ’s members, Maki’s the first to see her cry.
-She doesn’t like crying. She hates it. Because she’s afraid that she’ll never stop and that’s totally the opposite of her name. That’s why on that train station scene, while Nico was the last to cry because she refused to do so, she was the loudest when she did.

How to Handle a Nico: The Height of Luxury
Primary Pairing: NicoMaki Also Starring: Cocoro, Cocoa, Cotaro Words: 661 Rating: G Time Frame: Sometime after both have graduated HS Prompt: Luxury
---------
Author's Note: Primary Entry for the 18th
Summary: Maki joins the Yazawa siblings in making leaf art
---------
Nico had been right, Maki thought to herself, as she watched the younger Yazawa siblings squabble a bit over one of the leaves she had found that kind of already looked like a face. It didn’t quite escalate to the point where Nico had to intervene, but eventually Cocoro and Cocoa decided to let Cotaro have it.
Of course, then the two decided to use that apparent good deed to garner approval and attention from both Maki and Nico. But such was the norm when it came to the Yazawa siblings. And Maki had enjoyed watching the show for a couple years now.
“So, which leaf is Maki-chan gonna pick?”
Maki startled out of observer mode as Nico slipped in beside her. “M-me?” She sputtered.
“Of course. I thought it was obvious Maki-chan was gonna make some useless leaf art as well?”
Maki rolled her eyes as Nico emphasized the word useless. Her girlfriend had wasted no time in turning her earlier rant into something to tease her about.
“Maki-chan is gonna make something too?” Cocoa perked up.
“This one is good.” Cocoro held up a leaf.
“Hey, no fair, I was gonna offer Maki-chan this one.”
And they were back to bickering.
“Go ahead and join them, Maki-chan.” Nico urged. “It’s going to be a little while before I finish making dinner.”
“Onee-chan’s cooking…” Cocoa marveled.
“Are you sure you do not need help, Onee-sama?” Cocoro asked.
“Thank you Cocoro, but Maki-chan and I gathered all these leaves for you guys to make amazing art out of. We’ll be selecting the best to take home and display on the fridge.” That earned a set of smiles. “So don’t worry, Nico can handle tomato curry.”
“Maki-san is our guest.” Cocoro stated decisively. “Tomatoes are a must.”
Maki couldn’t help wondering if she was being teased by proxy by that, especially considering Nico’s smirk.
“And for dessert,” Nico continued, “Nico’s super special fried cinnamon sticks! The height of luxury!”
Now that was definitely teasing. Maki recalled that after she had been first introduced to the treat, she had indeed believed Nico that they were basically haute cuisine. She had later learned they were leftover bread crusts from the sandwiches Nico or her mother would prepare for everyone’s lunches each day, pan fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Nonetheless, Maki was just as hooked on them as the Yazawa family. Then again, that held true for Nico’s cooking in general.
Maki took a spot at the kotatsu, accepted leaves from both Cocoro and Cocoa and a glue stick from Cotaro, and got to work.
---------
“Perfect.” Nico approved before pulling out her phone. “Now for a couple of pics to send back to the kids.”
The couple had just arrived back at Nico and Nozomi’s apartment and immediately after removing their shoes, had gone to the kitchen to mount the artwork they had brought with them.
Cocoro had made a surprisingly detailed pic of sailboats, using sections of leaves for the sails and hulls and blue crayon for the water. Cocoa had painted pretty patterns on a set of leaves and glued them to a stick to make a butterfly. And Cotaro had glued a bunch of leaves in a ring, pasted googly eyes in the middle and drew a nose and mouth to make an adorable lion.
As for Maki, she had ended up spending most of her time helping the siblings with their creations. Thus, her project was created by hastily using several small leaves, pieces of larger ones and some stems to represent the musical notation of a popular seasonal song for kids.
It had been a wonderful night, as far as Maki was concerned. It wasn’t dinner at a five-star restaurant followed by the opera. It wasn’t a gathering that required a dress code. It was a night spent surrounded by those she loved. And thus, to Maki, to borrow Nico’s words, it was the height of luxury.
---------
Author's Note Continued: This is a direct sequel chapter to last year's entry that was based on Leaves from '21 and Useless from '22. So to keep up with my self challenge, I had to work in this year's Luxury.
My immediate first thought for the new prompt was an old NicoMaki doujin where Nico made cinnamon sticks and passed them off as being fancy. The omake entry was of Maki excitedly trying to describe the treat to her family's chef who was a bit confused. And that has always stuck with me. I love the idea of Maki falling for Nico's claims, learning the truth later, but still adoring the item anyway, be it cinnamon sticks or any number of other things.
And I know I've mentioned many times in my notes that I love writing the Yazawa siblings. So this was as good an excuse as any to do so.

I am being bitten by a Love Live ficbunny, and I need to get some thoughts out.
So, the concept is that just as μ's is winding down, just before the third years' graduation, a young girl is recruited as a professional idol by a big talent and media agency: Yazawa Cocoro, Nico's little sister. She ultimately jumps at the chance to be an idol just like her big sister, the Number 1 Idol in the Universe. Said big sister is working desperately to parlay her fame as a member of the (genuinely popular and ground-breaking) school idol unit μ's into a professional career, and is equally desperate not to let on that she's having any difficulty.
I'm envisioning this as a crossover with Idolmaster Cinderella Girls U149, with Cocoro joining 346Pro's Third Entertainment Division (because a. it's a property I know, b. so I don't have to make up idols or staff for an idol agency, and c. because I want to see the two casts' personalities bouncing off each other). So the structure would sort of alternate between wholesome kid shenanigans for a chapter, and then a chapter of Nico struggling with applications and interviews — and with suppressing her bitterness that she has had to, and is having to, work and suffer when her little sister gets handed this on a silver platter.
(I'm also thinking of an early scene where Nico discusses the recruitment with the other girls, and there being some worry among them before Hanayo talks about 346Pro's sterling reputation; Hanayo will provoke Nico into gushing over some of the 346 idols before remembering she's supposed to be bitter and suspicious. I'm also looking forward to Nico meeting the U149 Producer, because I'm pretty sure they're about the same height.)
Part of the idea is exploring the relationship between the school idol world and the professional idol industry; I'm thinking there's a range of opinions among industry higher-ups, with some viewing it as a feeder into the pro world, like the equivalent of minor league baseball or college sports, and some others viewing participating in school idol activities as an admission that the girl couldn't cut it in the pro world. (I figure some of the production companies help fund the Love Live and/or School Idol Festival partly for goodwill and partly for talent scouting.) Likewise, opinions among idols will probably vary similarly — some viewing it as strictly amateur hour, some envying the talent on display (we have staff to write songs and make costumes and do choreography, and they're doing it all themselves!), and some wishing they could participate with school friends. Perhaps some of the high school-age idols started as school idols? How do their former teammates feel about that? And do school idols universally look up to pro idols, or is there some suspicion? Disdain for "selling out"?
At one point, Nico will get a job offer from 346Pro — and have a great deal of difficulty, because she's going to feel like they're recruiting her partly because of her sister (who's been, as usual, gushing about her big sister to everyone in earshot) and not on her own merits.
(And I'll admit part of Cocoro's gushing is to set up a scene where Risa gets fed up with it and sneers "Eh, she's just a school idol." Near-violence ensues.)
Man, SIP isn't even my end of the franchise, and I haven't written a fic in years. If someone else wants to run with this, go ahead, but I just might get to writing something.

Idol Protection Program: Birthday Special Edition
NicoMaki, Love Live, 1.3K, 32/?
Birthday Special Edition
“Mom MOM MOM did you open your present!!!” Seven year old Ruby’s excited voice bounced around the hotel suite where Yazawa Nico, fresh out of a long, hot bath, was dressed in a fluffy pink robe, sitting up against pillows.
“No, Ruby, I’m just giving them to her now.” Maki rushed into the camera view, waving a rectangular package.
“Birthday presents are a breakfast activity, Mama.” No one could chide Maki like her firstborn, Dia.
“We were both traveling, bun. I didn’t want to meet Nico in the airport, then hand this over in the middle of hundreds of people.”
“Bzzzzt.” Maki’s excuse did not soothe Dia.
Nico was giggling like a fiend.
“Your Mama is taking care of Nico’s birthday just fine. And I listened to both your voice messages right away.” Nico leaned in close to the camera, puckering to land a kiss on the two parts of the screen where she could see her daughters. “Nico loves you both so much. We’ll be home soon.”
“Auntie Cocoro is taking us to see Boa tomorrow. It’s her 20th Anniversary live.” Dia flipped back to eager.
“That’ll be such a great show! Make sure you tell Nico everything.”
“We will, Mom!” Ruby’s bright eyes gleamed, “But open your present, c’mon, Momma.”
Nico chuckled, “Hand it over, Maki-chan. You know Nico can’t resist her babies.”
Ruby squealed and rocked.
Nico ripped the wrapping paper, revealing a photobook, with Dia and Ruby on the cover, microphones in one hand, plushies in the other, caught mid song, with hearts and candy and cutesy animals all over the backdrop.
“It’s our first album, Mom.” Dia pushed forward as Nico flipped through the pages in awe. Ruby and Dia had kitchen photoshoots and camping photoshoots and playing with piles of plushies photoshoots. They’d been busy while she’d had two weeks travelling. “We know you collect all your favorite K-pop albums and merch so we made you a Ruby and Dia…”
“It was Dia’s idea, Momma. She’s so smart. And Mama helped us with the pictures and the music.”
“Just a little,” Dia interrupted, prideful again. “Ruby and I already know a lot about what Idols sing. We listen to you. Then Ruby and Mama and I listened to some of the Muse songs and asked Aunt Umi for help.”
Nico read the tracklist: The Cutest Mom, Sweet Potato Camping, Happy Birthday, Pancakes and Pretty, and Stars and Good Night Stories.
Nico looked to Maki and mouthed, “You did this?”
Maki nodded.
Nico started tearing up.
“Mom, are you ok?” Ruby was always the first to respond to emotions gathering.
“Mama, what did you do??” Dia snapped.
“Your mother is fine. She just misses you two.” Maki flumped on the bed, “But for her birthday, I ordered her favorite dishes, we’re going to eat, and watch a movie. Why don’t you sing one of the songs for your mom. That’ll cheer her up.”
“Mama’s smart. How about Happy Birthday?” Dia turned to Ruby. Ruby shook her head, pulling Dia in as she whispered.
After a couple of minutes of consulting, Dia stared at the camera, “Are you ready?”
Nico nodded, “Nico is always ready for the cutest daughters in the universe to sing.”
“We’re going to do Pretty and Pancakes, since you should have birthday surprises with breakfast.” Another glare at Maki, who was very used to Dia and just snuggled closer to Nico, her arm dropping around the Super Idol’s shoulders.
“It’s all right, bun. I’ll make sure your mother’s happy with her day.”
Dia nodded, fierce gaze softening as she and Ruby got to their feet, turned in to each other, and began mimicking Nico pouring pancake batter into pans.
“This is amazing, Maki. Who did their choreography?”
“They did.”
Tears now running freely down her face, Nico cheered, “Nico has the cutest, talentedess daughters in the world, Nico Nico Ni.”
Now Dia and Ruby turned to the camera, flipping imaginary pancakes while singing about pretty strawberry pancakes for pretty strawberry eyes.
“Did you write that?” Nico whispered.
“Nope.”
“It’s giving Nico a breakfast craving.”
“We could order some…after.” Maki nipped at Nico’s ear.
“Mama!” Dia registered romantic moods growing between her parents faster than a thermometer registered a drop in temperature. “We are going to do Stars and Good Night Stories next. But we need to finish.”
Maki pulled back slightly from Nico, “We’re listening, bun.”
Ruby and Dia ended with a flourish and double Nico Nis.
Nico bounced up on her knees. “Nico loves it. Sing the chorus with me. Pancakes and pretty. I flip for strawberry sweet. Sweet and sunny, dipped in honey, bunny bunny, berry berry, bunny bunny, berry, berry, I flip for sweet and strawberry.” All three had their hands up, doing little bunny bops, as their voices blended.
Nico’s smile was the SuperNico Family Special Sparkler. Happiness glowed. “That’s adorable. Nico’s best birthday present ever.”
Nico ignored Maki’s pout.
“Nico will listen to the rest of the songs on the CD later. You girls had better rest up if Cocoro’s going to take you to the concert tomorrow.”
“Yes, Momma.”
“We’ll call you tomorrow.”
“Okay, Mama.”
“Make sure you get sleep.” Nico was going to make sure Cocoro knew that even though 9 year old Dia would insist she didn’t, she would need a nap before the concert.
“Yes, Mom.” Ruby waved.
Dia frowned. “I know that.”
Of course, Dia did. Nico was so frustrated sometimes by her eldest’s daughter independent streak, but Dia was Dia and exactly perfectly cute, even if she’d picked up prickliness from both parents. Ruby’s sweetness soothed it over, as long as Nico and Maki kept an eye on Dia’s domineering tendencies.
“Good night, Dia, Ruby.” Maki leaned forward, ready to flip down the laptop screen. “We…”
Nico joined in, “... love you. See you tomorrow.”
Nico rolled back into Maki, presenting the photobook, as Maki shoved the laptop off the bed, “Nico is so spoiled.”
“Nico is so loved.” Maki said firmly.
“You love spoiling Nico.”
Maki inhaled, her nose in Nico’s hair, “I love being near Nico. No more shows and travel for awhile, right?”
“No.” Nico slid her arms around Maki’s waist and squeezed, “Nico has to recharge.”
Maki was shifting, restless, not relaxing into Nico.
“What is it, Maki-chan? Is something wrong?”
“Want my birthday present?”
“Can’t it wait. Nico was about to unwrap some…thing else.”
“I think you’ll want to see it.” Maki slid another rectangular package out from under the pillows.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Nico could see the blush on the tips of Maki’s ears, not quite as red as her hair. Now she was really really curious. A quick tear and Nico had another photobook in her hands, Maki, draped in cloth clinging to curves and not covering much else, winking at the camera, amethyst eyes smoldering, DARING!! In bold, red lettering below her, as if it were a couch.
“Who took this photo?” Nico felt a surge of protectiveness.
“Timer, silly.” Maki had a sly grin as she leaned across Nico, effectively pinning her to the bed, but her eyes stayed shy, not meeting Nico’s.
“Oh.”
“Happy Birthday, Nico-chan.” And then a familiar tune hummed and an unforgettable voice skipped to breathily sexily sing mid chorus…
Are you ready, are you ready? (Come here, challenger!) Are you ready, are you ready? (Hesitation's a no-no!!) Are you ready, are you ready? (Don't give up, how boring!) Are you ready, are you ready? (Hesitation's a no-no!!)
Nico had learned not to hesitate in these moments, Maki near and nervously bold. Room service could wait. What couldn’t was Nico’s all time favorite any day activity, kissing Maki silly.
