New Moon VS Human Form - Shingetsu VS Saku
The subtitles have a translation issue. Myouga here says "This is Saku." Saku is the ability. Shingetsu - 新月 - Does mean New Moon in Japanese. Saku - 新月 is also another word for New Moon. However, Myouga here is using two different words to distinguish between them. So in that conversation: Saku means the ability of half-demons to become human and Shingetsu means New Moon. That every half-demons human form can vary like Jinenji, Izumo and Naraku. The original context that the series previously established remains the same.

i wanted to share since you hc Towa Higurashi as transmasc and are looking for evidence: originally, Towa's personal pronoun in the anime was supposed to be 'boku!' they were going to be a bokukko character but unfortunately RT herself ended up vetoing that one. but food for thought if you're looking for evidence!
omg this literally made my day thank you!! This is absolutely delightful and only adds to the ways that canon treats Towa like a male protag 🖤
I have so much I could say about trans representation in fiction (especially in non-western media) if I had the mental energy lmao. It makes me really sad that just posting on tumblr about this headcanon immediately got me backlash from a transphobe 🥲 Like... I don't hate people who don't see Towa this way!! they are a wonderful, interesting character regardless of gender, and even if they identify as female they are absolutely breaking gender stereotypes and I think that's so cool to see, especially in an anime. I genuinely don't understand why people would attack trans people (or anyone who is still figuring out/exploring their own identity) for seeing themselves in a character.
For me, both the way Towa behaves and speaks of their gender and the way their storyline and characterization is played out by the writers positively screams trans experience, and even the ways that canon emphasizes that they're a girl feels very pointed/"bases-covering" to me. Like, I'm pretty sure Japan's censorship/qualifications for acceptable LGBTQIA+ content are a lot stricter even than in western media, so the fact that this is pinging so hard on my "transdar" (lmao) really makes me think that it was a message the writers were trying really hard to get across, even if subliminally. Personally, as a transmasc who has a complex relationship with gender and for whom anime was very formative for their exploration of identity (especially Inuyasha), I am delighted to see an otherwise kind of mid show representing the MC's gender in this way.
LMAOOO all that to say, I really appreciate this information, thank you for sharing 🖤🖤
#yashahime#inuyasha#trans towa headcanon#terfs and transphobes dni i will block your ass so fast 🖤#kase rambles#kasey answers#i was all excited to make a meta post with my collected evidence lolll but now im like i don't have the energy to deal with haters. sigh

i said it on my old blog i'll say it again. rin isn't the mother of the twins, she's their very loving aunt. no one gave birth to the twins, they just kind of popped into existance because of kagura's dying wish to see sesshomaru one last time. they were born of the newly found sympathy in sesshomaru's heart (see manga) and the yearning in kagura's. that's why they don't know their parents to begin with, and not because sesshomaru didn't wish to take care of them or some other bs (after he literally raised rin). this is the only way i will ever accept yashahime stuff, because s/essrin a horrible concept to me.
#⤷ meta: kagura.#( on yashahime and stuff )#( i just like to think of half demons just spawning randomly out of demons emoting too hard )#⤷ fandom: inuyasha.

Just got into inuyasha at 24! Out of nowhere I remembered an anime scene I watched as a child, the only thing I could remember was a desperate girl, and other girl kissing a boy with white hair. Searched for it online, turns out it was when kikyo trapped kagome on the tree and kissed inuyasha. I guess that really marked me as a kid lol. I’ve just finished reading the manga and now I’m gonna watch the full anime. So happy I found ur blog! Yours is one of my favourites in the fandom.
Welcome and thank you for the love!
So many people watched Inuyasha as a kid, it's a core memory that cannot be forgotten it seems ❤ I loved that you read the manga as well, it's a different experience and you get to see all the scenes that were not animated :)
The fandom isn't super active anymore due to lack of new content (we get a new chapter of the Yashahime manga every month but it's not canon content and a lof of people aren't reading it... for various reasons lol) but I hope you can still have fun here! There's still plenty of fanarts, fanfics and meta being posted. For a fandom that's almost 30 years old, I say we're still doing alright, lmao.

I do wish the twins had been found abandoned and Sesshomaru was like, well I've adopted little pathetic things before, but he realizes that infants are *different* and he knows that Inuyasha and Kagome just had one a while back and IT survived, so he decides that it's Rin's turn to have a pair of pathetic things, all but ensuring the twins will be taken care of and raised by InuKag. And Inuyasha and Kagome don't get LESS time being a family with Moroha but MORE time being a family with all of the kids. And maybe it DOES turn out they're dog demon hanyo and the first arc or overarching plot of the story would be that Inuyasha and Sesshomaru have to solve the mystery of a dog demon being around that they never knew about. Or something. I'm literally just spit balling here, but the theme could be all about uncovering family secrets at every level. There could also be some revelations as to where Kagome's family line originates as well. Just kind of throw it all in there, why not. And along the way, the gang is faced with demons and ghost stories inspired by Japanese mythology as they look for clues. You get an overarching plot and a little story engine all at once. And you could have Kagome KNOWING what is going to go down in 50 years with the Tokugawa shogunate and guns and whatnot, so she eventually begins pulling away from society and wanting a safe place for her family to exist out of the way of the international shit show that's about to go down.
I really do not know who Yashahime was for. Not the inukaggers and not the sessrinners. There is no possible way the way the relationship unfolded between Sesshomaru and Rin was satisfying to anyone who shipped them. Sesshomaru is all perfunctory and Rin is all obedience. Like, I don't ship it, but it could have been built up as a big romance between them. And the whole story could have started when Rin was older and had a more adult outlook and disposition. And Sesshomaru could have been like, reluctant and have to overcome his pride and leftover internalized racism before he could even deal with his feelings towards her. It could be that Sesshomaru dropped Rin off to Kaede's house, he went away for a while and came back and realized there was something there (feelings wise on his side, like maybe seeing Rin with the hanyo toddlers DOES SOMETHING to his cold romanceless heart, I dunno. A mini glimpse into a possible future for them) and then he disappears for a long time and when he does appear, he doesn't visit her (only checks in with Inuyasha), and the story unfolds from there. maybe Rin out of pain has adopted a cold, haute air about her to protect herself from becoming too attached to others after she feels like she has been abandoned. Maybe she even initially rejects Sesshomaru when he finally returns and won't talk to him or see him. Like, set it up to where there's a character arc for both of the characters and there is conflict that must be resolved. Don't just make it this weird romanceless perfunctory thing that is satisfying to no one. I think that even though it's not in line with modern standards, there would be a way it could make sense to the audience, possibly as one of many examples that show Kagome's modern sensibilities chafing against the social mores and absolute violence of the Sengoku era. But the writers would have to MAKE it make sense. It could be compelling, and the fact that he has brought her back from the dead on two separate occasions means he would be limited in using his most powerful powers should she end up in danger.
Ultimately...when I read fics that happen to have the pairing, my brain just treats the Rin character as an OC. Like, I realized at one point my brain was supplying the image of a BLONDE woman in place for Rin. So...I just kind of sidestep the whole situation when their relationship is not portrayed as father/daughter.
Im so pissed off i hate yashahime the mere existance of it makes me frothing mad.

I’m not supposed to cut it. But to feel it...
Setsuna plays threads of fate like the strings of her violin.
While making some gifs of the scene in episode 33 where Setsuna is confronted with the challenge of severing Mayonaka’s thread of fate, I noticed a detail I found intriguing.
When Setsuna glides the blade of her naginata against the thread it reminded distinctly of a bow gliding along the string of an instrument. Setsuna is, of course, a violinist.
Setsuna’s ability to play the violin is introduced in episode 4 and subsequently has become more important to the plot and to her character as a way of evoking strong feelings and memories in both herself and others.
In episode 28, when Setsuna sees her mother, Rin, for the first time, she plays her signature piece and we cut from a scene of Rin humming a lullaby with an identical melody to a flashback of episode 4 where Setsuna reveals that this melody has come to her instinctively.
Back in episode 33, Setsuna has an instinctive realization when she goes to cut the thread of fate, that she’s not supposed to cut, but to feel it.
Once she’s has this realization, she glides the blade of her naginata along the thread of fate like she would the bow of her violin along the strings. She uses her signature weapon to play the thread like she would a piece of music.
And just like how Setsuna’s violin playing has the power to evoke long-dormant memories and unconscious feelings, ‘playing’ the thread as she would her instrument allows Setsuna to see into the past. She’s able to see Mayonaka’s memories of Oharu and by doing so, is able to understand their connection and thus, now has the ability to sever it.

What bugs me about Moroha
There are so many things about Yashahime that bother me with how they treat Moroha that I could probably make a book out of it, but instead, I'm going to just talk about how Moroha was raised and has really no knowledge about her parents.
I imagine InuKag had to have had some sort of talk with Koga prior to him receiving her? Otherwise, wouldn't there have been some investigation on his and Ayame's part when Moroha showed up? Why didn't Koga and Ayame talk about InuKag to Moroha. Where is Koga now? He raised her, supposedly, for at least some of her life. You're telling me he allowed Yawaragi to sell her? And then after Yawaragi died, Koga didn't think he needed to check up on Moroha? Moroha clearly doesn't see Koga as an adoptive father as she never brings him up. Though her clothing is clearly inspired by them and how wild she can sometimes act is obviously from them.
Why did Kaede hardly ever talk about InuKag in general? Why did she not take in Moroha? Or treats her as indifferently as possible when she is in the village?
Sango and Miroku's children hardly seemed to know who Moroha was. How did they not know? Why didn't Miroku and Sango -InuYasha's and Kagome's best friends- not take in their friends' child? I can't believe they didn't know what happened to Moroha.
Like, InuYasha and Kagome disappear, do they think they are dead? Did they assume Moroha vanished with them? Except when years later Moroha shows up around the village a lot, Sango and Miroku never thought to bring her in and raise her themselves? Or did they know she was with the Wolf Demon Tribe and never visited? Never reached out to her?
The way the people that know InuYasha and Kagome treat their daughter is baffling to me. Like if I was InuYasha and Kagome, and I come back from the border of the afterlife and see how all my friends have treated my daughter, I would be so angry, like they are no longer my friends angry.
There must be some explanations that we haven't heard yet, and I keep watching, hoping to get some answers. But the way this show treats InuKag doesn't give me much hope.

towa and sestuna didnt had dog ears or golden eyes
yeah I actually kinda disappointed with their design waaaaayyyyy back since 2020. I know that Rumiko Takahashi said herself that hanyo's appearance may differ between individuals, but initially I thought she was talking about the difference between species/hybrid, not within the same lineage....
The shape of ears, I can shrug it off rather easily, because maybe it does not always occur within a population of inu hanyo. But the color of eyes.....
Sesshomaru has golden eyes is understandable because both his parents have golden eyes, too. Inuyasha also inherited golden eyes from his father, even though his mother has brown eyes. Therefore we can safely assumed that golden is the dominant gene for eye color in dog demon.
Moroha with her brown eyes is actually quiet disappointing, for me at least Because if we follow Mendel's laws of inheritance, then there's 50% chance that Inuyasha and Kagome's children are born with golden eyes. Considering golden is more dominant than brown, there's a greater probability of her inheriting golden iris. But I can accept it rather easily, too, if her character is designed with brown eyes along with the explanation because of "she has more human blood (than demon blood) in her body".
However.... Towa and Setsuna born with red and purple eyes, respectively, is a much much bigger disappointment 😂😂😂 because.... well..... good bye genetics 🤣🤣🤣 we all know what their parents' eye colors are, so it's just confusing to see them kids being born with colors that are completely non-existent in their ancestors' (parents and grandparents) genes 😂😂😂😂 It's as if they are actually some other couple's children 😭😭 But, then again it's anime, so I shouldn't complain that much, am I right? because the animators have worked really hard and the creative team too what with all the characters designs as well as the director and storywriter 🤐🤐

Why did Rin name them "Towa and Setsuna"? - The meaning behind their names
I received a question about their names. The meaning behind Moroha's name will be in another post. Since these were things we previously covered I'll have the master post on Towa and Setsuna's name here -
In Yashahime Episode 15 Rin says "Towa and Setsuna" to their names. In Japanese - Towa and Setsuna mean One Moment and an Eternity. It's also said in each episode. "Towa and Setsuna, between us half-demon twins, two worlds exist at the same time; Human and Demon, Feudal Era and Present Day, Peace and War, Joy and Sorrow, Dreams and Reality, Now and Forever, and finally Love and Hate. A Feudal fairytale, Yashahime. We'll keep moving forward, overcoming the hurdles of destiny."
Katsuyuki: — What is the origin behind the names “Setsuna” and “Towa”?
**From the outset, I came up with “Setsuna” using “setsu” in “Sesshōmaru”. I chose the name “Towa” so that it would pair with “Setsuna”. https://ayuuria.tumblr.com/post/684458629287542784/yashahime-translation-official-guidebook
Setsuna means “moment” while Towa means “eternity”. - Hence, a pair.
Katsuyuki-san said that "Setsuna is a black Sesshoumaru" and Towa is "White Sesshoumaru" they are Yin and Yang.
https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/629334377576464384/this-was-a-translation-collab-between-esther-xiao Katsuyuki: "Setsuna and Towa inherited the "yin" and "yang" of Sesshomaru, respectively, but at the same time both yin and yang exist in Towa and Setsuna. Half-demons are self-contradicting existences, and that is the subject that has been passed down."
Rumiko also mentioned this https://ayuuria.tumblr.com/post/667032838479265792/yashahime-translation-official-guidebook
"Sumisawa-san told me “Towa is a white Sesshōmaru and Setsuna is a black Sesshōmaru”"
You can also find "Rin to Sesshoumaru" theme song in Towa's theme song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9lofIKeL_0
The voice actors said Setsuna and Towa's relationship seems to reflect on Sesshoumaru and Rin's - https://www.tumblr.com/officialinuyasha/646757262237597697/staff-thoughts-on-sessrin
"Towa seems to close that gap like *that person* (Rin" "Their relationship seems like that of their parents" "If you look at Towa, I think you can figure out who the mother is"
Their names are black and white, past and present, human and demon, one moment and an eternity. A pair.

Fate, Time and Spinning Wheels
We all know about how changes in fate and time are themes in Yashahime. But there was also a VERY interesting conversation on the topic in the OG that they might be referencing in YH.
Here, Naraku is talking to Kikyo right after coming out of Mt Hakurei
A spinning wheel of fate, you say? Which spins and weaves a red thread?
Haven’t we seen THAT exact same visual in Yashahime? Yes, we have
The red threads are everywhere in Yashahime. They’re in the windmill of time, in the twins’ hair
And even in this new advertisement
In the original series, this is Kikyo’s view on fate and destiny, from that same conversation.
Which Treekyo seems to have inherited, since the tree wants to maintain fate as it should have been, even if it takes eliminating Kirinmaru and Sesshomaru, those who are actively trying to interfere with time for their own purposes.
Meanwhile, this is what Naraku has to say about fate and destiny.
While Kikyo believes that fate cannot be changed, Naraku believes that the strong are able to make their own fate. This is the approach that Kirinmaru and Sesshomaru seem to be taking, using their POWER, their STRENGTH as demons to literally alter time and fate.
In the newest episode, episode 25, we also have a similar speech from Towa, on the topic of strength and weakness. Like her uncle Inuyasha before her, one of Towa’s goals is to protect those that matter to her.
But it also has to do with fate. Here, Towa falls into despair because she believes that she cannot change Setsuna’s fate (to die), and she wasn’t even able to avenge her death. However, Towa is given a tool that allows her to change Setsuna’s fate and resurrect her. Therefore, Towa has been able to surpass Sesshomaru as he was in the original. When Sesshomaru was faced with Kagura’s fate, he tried to avert it using Tenseiga, but he was unable to use the sword on Kagura due to her body dissolving as she died. Tenseiga needs an intact body to work on, and Kagura didn’t leave one behind.
This time, Tenseiga cannot work normally either, not because Setsuna’s body is too damaged, but because the blade is broken. However, Towa is able to use a power THAT SESSHOMARU DOESN’T HAVE: Her ability to make energy blades, in order to use the broken Tenseiga to successfully revive Setsuna.
And at that point we can clearly see that th twins absolutely have demonic powers that they didn’t inherit from Sesshomaru. Because Sesshomaru ABSOLUTELY CANNOT USE ENERGY BLADES. He’s unable to use the broken Tenseiga to save Setsuna. Towa using her energy blade to make Tenseiga work is not a test, it’s a last resort. So if she didn’t inherit this power (energy blades) from her father’s side of the family, she must have inherited from her mother’s side. Rin didn’t have any powers of her own, being a normal and untrained human girl without any power of her own, but Kagura’s brother, Byakuya, could create energy blades. Therefore, it makes sense for Towa to inherit the ability to create energy blades from her mother’s side if her mother is Kagura, which would make Byakuya her uncle on her mother’s side.
So, regarding FATE, we are being given different perspectives and viewpoints:
Kikyo, who believes that fate is unchanging
Naraku, who believes that fate can be altered if you have enough power
Kirinmaru and Sesshomaru, two great demons who have altered the timeline, causing many paradoxes and anomalies to sprung forth.
Towa, one of the anomalies created by Kirinmaru and Sesshomaru’s altered timeline, who combines several viewpoints regarding fate. At the beginning, she starts out like Kikyo, believing fate to be UNCHANGING, that there is nothing she can do to save Setsuna. However, when given A TOOL that would allow her to revert Setsuna’s fate and bring her back to life, Towa takes that change and she is able TO USE HER OWN POWER in order to succeed.
Another point regarding the theme of FATE in Yashahime is severing fate, which is probably going to be relevant regarding Zero’s curses, which tie her own lifeforce to her tagets’. This episode has tied it to Setsuna’s blood blade
And talking about time and fate, in YH, the Tree of Ages is another big symbol of those concepts. And, like the Shikon Jewel before it, it has acquired a light side and a dark side. On one side, we have Treekyo, the spirit of the tree that has taken on Kikyo’s visage
On the other, we have Roothead, the demonic parasite
That looked like Onigumo did after being burned.
However, Treekyo is looking rather threatening in the latest trailers
But she’s been subtly menacing before, too
And we should remember one important rule about Kikyo. In the original, the real Kikyo was never a villain. However, THE ONE WHO WASN’T KIKYO, BUT TOOK HER VISAGE, definitely was one.
Treekyo may have taken on Kikyo’s appearance, but IT’S NOT THE REAL KIKYO. And the last time someone else took on Kikyo’s face, it was Naraku in his plot against Inuyasha and Kikyo to take the jewel for himself.
Something is definitely going to happen with the tree and its spirits in S2, and Treekyo may not be as benevolent as she made herself look like. Because it was never the real Kikyo to begin with. She may not even have to be “evil” per se, just completely dedicating to her goal of preserving the Tree of Ages and fate without caring for factors such as the continued survival of paradoxical existences that would never have existed if it hadn’t ben for Kirinmaru’s and Sesshomaru’s intereference.

Three main characters, one fighting style
I was thinking about Yashahime today, and it occurred to me, part of what’s been bothering me about the Yashahime fights are how all 3 characters are interchangeable in a fight.
They have surface-level details that are different. Setsuna uses a naginata instead of a sword, and each have their own special finishing move...which are all linear energy blasts. Azure Dragon Wave, Crimson Dragon Wave and Cyclone Burst.
Very early in the show this wasn’t as pronounced. Towa had her spiritual energy absorption and whip. Setsuna used Demon Slayer poisons and tools. Heck, Setsuna even had a special attack that put everyone to sleep. And Moroha used a lot more spiritual energy techniques, as well as her demon form and her father’s old move.
But as we move forward, each character’s unique traits are used less and less. Fights start with swordplay and acrobatics and end when a rainbow pearl starts glowing and a linear energy attack is used.
Contrast this with Inuyasha where every single character operated on a completely different axis from each other.
Inuyasha of course was the most similar to the Yashahime with his swordplay until his newest big secret technique was used to end the fight. But the others were widely different. Kagome’s spiritual archery was extremely powerful but left her open, often forcing battles to play around protecting her organically. Miroku’s wind tunnel meant he could never be directly approached in a fight, but gave him a glaring weakness to poison, while his sutra and staff abilities gave him supportive utility. And Sango’s Hiraikotsu was this immensely powerful weapon but often kept her up on Kirara away from the direct action, while her demon hunter tools allowed her to surprise enemies and play subterfuge.
Heck, even shippo with his illusion magic while not often effective, was still incredibility unique and offered something nobody on the rest of the team had access to, and Kirara could fly and breath fire.
Each character had a unique weapon, unique fighting style, and unique contributions to the team.
This coupled with the bloodless fights of Yashahime makes combat just uninteresting. Characters will yell, jump and swing swords and call out special attacks until the bad guy falls and the Yashahime escape without a scratch. And since they're all part demon, they’re allowed superhuman movement, stamina and damage resistance.
While in Inuyasha, while you still always knew the main characters were gonna live, there was REAL tension. Three of the main cast were normal humans who would not survive a direct hit from even a minor demon’s big attack, and every cut and hit they did take would have a lasting effect for the rest of the fight. Characters would get battered and bloodied and knocked unconscious, the wind tunnel would nearly kill Miroku in big fights, Hiraikotsu would break, Kagome would run out of arrows or drain her spiritual energy, Inuyasha would be very glad the robe of the fire-rat was already red.
I don’t really have a conclusion to this post, but like, yeah. That’s why Yashahime fights aren’t as interesting.

The interesting thing about Rin's behavior towards her daughters is that it aligns very well with Japanese traditions but for a lot of Western fans, it seems very cold.
I remember when the Ghost in the Shell remake came out, there was a roundtable talk among Japanese actresses that dicussed the cultural nuances that were lost in the movie due to it being an American adaption. One of them being the behavior of the main character's mom, who was separated from her due to the cyborg process.
It also makes sense why Kagome hugs Moroha (also the situation was different), because she grew up in the modern era. But Rin restraints herself, because its not the right time and place for it.
However, she still asks to hug them when they come back, which does betray her stoic front. Let's hope she gets that hug sooner than later! 🙏🏼

Rin’s Agency in Inuyasha/HnY
I think one of the most disheartening and disappointing element that acts as the core of the anti-Sessrin’s arguments is that they deliberately chose to view Rin as a hapless victim--not as a character who grew up, learned valuable life skills and lessons and confidently made decisions for herself--but rather as someone who was manipulated her entire life.
In doing so, they inevitably took away her agency; it was just that hard for them to imagine that Rin could grow up to become a woman from whose admiration and loyalty towards Sesshoumaru grew deeper into romantic love. That she chose for herself that part of her life’s happiness would be to have a life and children with him.
Because that’s the root of the disagreement, right? Ultimately how the fans view Rin--and more importantly, how she lived her life up until the point she was sealed inside the tree.
They’d rather see her as some weakling who never grew out of her childhood, as someone who became the victim of--in their eyes, a “child groomer.” As someone who couldn’t tell she was being manipulated, that her kind and sweet nature was somehow her downfall because it was taken advantage of by another character.
For what it’s worth, just because we barely see Rin’s life up until the point she gave birth to the twins doesn’t mean that there aren’t hints of it in the anime. As she grew up, her manner of speech became calmer; gone is Mamiko Noto’s childish intonation for the character and in its place is a gentler, more ladylike tone. She’s learned a variety of skills from Kaede such as midwifery--an invaluable asset for most women during the Feudal Era. Her survival skills have no doubt been honed; she’s always had a sharp eye for which ones are the edible plants in the forest and which aren’t during her travels with Sesshoumaru and Jaken.
In other words, she grew up to become a woman.
I always can’t help but shake my head whenever the antis are accusing the Sessrin shippers of doing her character a disservice--how Sunrise and Rumiko Takahashi had ruined the show for them (which is also kinda bonkers, cuz yknow...the aforementioned are the very same people who brought this show into their lives).
And that’s perfectly fine. Lol Let them hurl all the insults and names towards the shippers--at the end of the day, it’s just words they’ve wholly misunderstood being thrown around for fake woke clout. Don’t entertain them, instead emulate Sesshoumaru: don’t let these fools think they even have the right to talk or approach you, because they don’t.
Because the way I see it, what they’re peddling is even more harmful AND a disservice to Rin’s character, than what they perceive the Sessrin ship to be: they’re actively denying a girl’s right to grow up and make choices for herself.
What they’re arguing for isn’t anything positive or noteworthy. At the end of the day, what they’re peddling is just the same misogynistic bullshit we’ve seen before in the anime community at large.

Are the seven flowers of autumn somehow related to the seven rainbow pearls?
As far as we know there are seven rainbow pearls, each one a different color which made us believe they are linked to the seven main characters from Inuyasha, because you an easily pair each character with one specific pearl:
Red – Inuyasha
Green – Kagome
Blue – Miroku
Pink – Sango
Yellow/Gold – Shippo
Grey/Silver – Sesshomaru
Orange – Rin
Now, I was rewatching the first episode of Yashahime and I noticed this little exchange between Kagome and Sango as they walk back to the village:
It is a very casual exchange but it caught my attention because it comes out of nowhere, and their conversation gets interrupted by Hisui’s cry and we don’t know why they were talking about it. Now, I did my research and I found this:
The poem was written by Yamanoue no Okura, a Japanese poet. It can be found in the Manyoshu, Japan’s oldest know collection of poems.
Flowers blossoming
in autumn fields -
when I count them on my fingers
they then number seven
The flowers of bush clover,
eulalia, arrowroot,
pink, patrinia,
also, mistflower
and morning faces flower.
When I first noticed this I thought maybe each flower was a different color (just like the pearls), and as I began researching I realized some of the flowers can be paired with a character, although some of the colors don’t match (the Obana with Sesshomaru, Kikyou with Kagome, Nadeshiko with Sango, Fujibakama with Miroku to some extent). I don’t think it’s a coincidence Kagome mentioned seven autumn flowers and we have seven mysterious pearls, although I’m not sure how they are related. I just wanted to put my little research out in the universe.
The seven flowers are:
Ominaeshi (Patrinia Scabiosifolia)
It was said to be so beautiful it overshadowed the beauty of women. Also known as the maiden flower. The word Ominaeshi (女郎花) refers to a young woman or maiden. It represents beauty, kindness, fleeting love and consideration.
Obana/Susuki (Japanese Silver Grass)
Closely associated with the autumn moon and the monlit sky, as it is put on display during moon viewings. It is believed to bring safety and good health. It ranges from pale silver to deep purplish-red depending on the variety. It represents power, life energy and vitality.
In Kanji characters, Obana is written 雄花 which means “male flower”. If you break down the characters, 雄 can also mean “masculine”, “powerful”, “grand” or to describe a powerful or influential person or state.
Kikyou (Bellflower or Balloon Flower, Platycodon)
It has bluish purple leaves. The dried roots have effects on sputum and cough (just like Kagome explained to the twins). It is a symbol of friendship, endless love, elegance and sincerity.
The flower’s name is written like this 桔梗. However, apparently the word Kikyou can have another meaning if you spell it like this 帰京, which is “returning to Tokyo”. If you break down the characters, 帰 means “homecoming”, “arrive at”, “lead to”, “result in”; while 京 means “capital”.
Nadeshiko/Kawaranadeshiko (Dianthus, Carnation)
A symbol of the beauty and elegance of Japanese women. “Yamato Nadeshiko” is a Japanese expression meant to describe a woman who possesses the ideal classical Japanese feminine attributes (poised, decorous, kind, gentle, graceful, humble, patient, virtuous, respectful, benevolent, honest, charitable, faithful). Also used to describe the epitome of pure, feminine beauty. Usually pink in color, light pink Carnations symbolize mother-like love and express gratitude, while dark pink Carnations are used to express tenderness and fondness.
In Kanji characters, Nadeshiko is written 撫子, which means “a lovable, caressable child” or “a child you can caress”. The Carnation is heavily related with Mother’s Day in many cultures worldwide. Because of the belief that they first appeared on earth from the Virgin Mary's tears, it is the symbol of a mother's undying love. It represents pure love, innocence, chastity, talent, boldness and fearless.
Fujibakama
It has tiny white blossoms tinged with purple atop long stems. It has a subtle fragrance, and it is used for clearing away heat and toxic materials. Reference to the flower in poetry usually connotes a man rather than a woman. Many poems allude to its fragrance being the only memento left of a departed lover.
In Kanji characters, Fujibakama is written 藤袴. The first character, 藤 means wisteria (a shade of purple) and 袴 is a Japanese male formal attire.
It is a symbol of caring, hesitancy and fond and pleasing memories.
Kuzu
II didn’t find much about this one, except that it is heavily used as food and medicine, and that it is considered invasive in many parts of the world. It represents healing, vitality, patience, determination, strength of spirit and the lover’s sigh.
Hagi
It is a popular autumnal symbol, associated with melancholy and unrequited love. It represents meditation, bashfulness, affection, positive love and flexible spirit.
