Ah my boy Koiki, who's original iteration became so specific that he split off into an oc and pregame got given the much less cool name of Koiki.

Yandere PG Kokichi/Koiki Headcanons

Pregame Kokichi will be referred to as Koiki

Koiki's not an easy person to catch the eye of, incredibly particular and somewhat secretly misanthrope, Koiki views everyone as just pawns and other game pieces for his quest to world domination. He's taken a lot of influence from the best character in Danganronpa, which he will fight about, Monaca Towa. Truly, she's everything he wants to be.

So he makes himself seem pleasant, sweet, naive even, as he peers up to you in those big round glasses in that soft woolen sweater. One would not be amiss to mistake him for a sheep, but with tongue and eyes as sharp as claws, beware the wolf in the sheep. He'll lie, cheat, steal, push down the stairs, and then blame you for all of it, because poor little bullied Class Rep Koiki could NEVER.

Though while everyone thinks they're friends with Koiki, Koiki feels nothing for them. No empathy, or pity, or sympathy, simply dominoes to line up. However, don't mistake this for a total detachment. He has his more early interests, like sweets, and especially animals. Koiki adores animals, seeing them as much more honest and understandable then people. People have all this pomp and charade and knives in backs, a dog is just a dog. Simply, effective, understandable. Truly what could a person give him that a cat or dog or bird couldn't?

With quite an ego and viewing himself as just inherently better then humanity, it's very very hard to make true attachments. Which does leave him a bit lonelier then he likes to admit. So this won't be a standard meet cute, no, this will be calculated. He'll see you around, just another pawn in his game, as he learns all your secrets. Then you break the scripts he had thought with you. You take him off guard, you call him out for a moment, or you rescue a dog from traffic, or you reveal that you were smarter then you appeared. Either way, you proved his calculations wrong.

And if there's something Koiki can't stand, it's being wrong because if he's wrong that means he's not perfect which means he's slacking, and he CANNOT have that.

So he focuses in on you, spends more time with you, trying to figure out where his calculations, his precious gears and pawns and plans, failed him.

He just can't seem to get it right though, maybe you don't want to be around him despite his charms, maybe you keep changing the rules he thinks he understands, for whatever reason he keeps failing.

Suddenly this isn't a pawn, or an actor, or just another shadow on the wall, but a person, like him, complex, complicated, alive.

He's never met another person before, just shadows and facades of what it means to be a person.

Such a rare occurance, such a thing he didn't think was possible

it's certainly not boring, and he certainly isn't going to let something like that slip through his fingers. Oh no, you won't escape your new best friend so easily, and if you try, he'll make everyone hate you as the cruel cold person who spurred the sweetest kindest person in school...do you think your reputation could take that? your future? no? good, so put your hand in his, and dance this dangerous dance of dominance and conflict with him, and he won't blame you for a black eye.

Just gonna rant about pregame stuff because I'm bored.

I hate the stereotypical pregame versions of characters so much that it's not even funny. Everytime I see pregame Shuichi portrayed as a yandere or pregame Kokichi portrayed as a soft shy boy or (in my very biased opinion) worse of all when I see Kaito portrayed as a mean bully (which by the way is the more tame version of how a lot of people make pregame Kaito believe me I've seen people make him even worse) I'll just cringe.

The pregame characters must have had a pretty shitty life if they wanted to sign up for a killing game and people need to keep in mind that they're still teenagers.

Anyways sorry for how weirdly worded this is I'm much better at ranting when I'm actually speaking with people.

✧Yandere Headcanons — Pregame✧

Note: Once again, these are based off my own interpretation on their personalities. One of the things I wanted to do when writing these was to slightly mirror these four off of their counterparts when it comes to behavior and traits as a yandere.

Part One — Kaede, Shuichi, Kokichi, Kaito

✧Harukawa, Maki✧

Maki was wary of these unhealthy feelings at first. She thought it'd stay innocent since she values you so much. Despite what everyone else says, you've taken your time getting to know her. Because of that, she fully trusts and deems you as a keeper. The friendship was innocent and some of the best moments of her life. She wanted more. Maybe it was selfish of her to daydream about holding your hand and you confessing to her one day. It was all just fantasy, right? It wasn't, actually. It was a longing.

You're the only person she hangs out with, and she's okay with that. You have her deepest secrets (not entirely...) while she has yours. Maki always promises to never tell a soul about what you've confided to her. What is spoken under your home stays there, after all. She'll take everything she knows about you to her grave. She doesn't believe anyone else would know you on the level she does. That's preposterous. They were never the shoulder you cry on, the one who knows how you like your breakfast or that you'd like a certain meal at a specific time of day...only Maki would know. She's stuck to you—by the hip.

It's no secret how much she detests people entering your life. Calm as ever, she tolerates them for the time being. You assume Maki is uncomfortable meeting new people due to her social skills. Your assumption is partially correct. She is uncomfortable around these new faces, but at the same time, she hates them. If they as so much as look at you in a way that insinuates affection beyond friendship, Maki's blood will be boiling. You're busy talking to this person, yet her mind is elsewhere. All she can think about is how this person can be snuffed out. It's so violent, the confines of her mind. She was someone who was into violent and bloody video games and stories, but...she never considered the possibility of it happening in real life.

It stays on the back burner for a while. Could she really have the capability to enact these gruesome thoughts? Maybe...she thinks to herself as she watches on intensely. It would be necessary, in her own words. Losing you would be worse than someone else losing a friend, son/daughter, or whoever this person is to others. Maki needs to ensure you're by her side for years. Just enough for you two to date, get married, and have a family. A family that she has always wanted since the day she played house as a kid. 

✧Yumeno, Himiko✧

Himiko takes much time to love someone as deeply as any yandere would. Even more so than the more stubborn ones. It's not like she doesn't care for others. She's just tired and always in some form of slump. She goes through life the same way without a shred of change. Just how she likes it. Himiko goes with the flow of things and makes no effort to form friendships or long-lasting bonds. Content with her life, she spends many hours alone with her interests. That is until she meets you, her darling.

You actually scare her. Almost terrifies her. Being in your presence makes her remember you're the embodiment of her life, changing its course. For better or worse, she doesn't know. It does not matter since it's still a terrifying thing to face. So Himiko avoids you for a while. There are moments when you run into her, and some part of her mind says to stay. She's very conflicted and isn't willing to get out of her comfort zone. That's fine. She'll come around. When she does, it'll be similar to Maki. Himiko would be attached by the hip and follow you around. She strangely feels safe rambling about her fixations to you. The amount of time she puts into them is unhealthy, but it distracts her from thinking about things in life. You're a distraction as well...she's happy with that.

She's excessively codependent on you. Which is why rivals frustrate and scare her to death. Himiko has this overwhelming urge to burst into tears when you show signs of 'favoring' this person over her. She wouldn't consider herself a crybaby at all, but now crying is something she feels like doing when your bond is threatened. She won't admit to having these fears, choosing to bottle up her true emotions until they burst. When that happens, she vents everything to you. Unintentionally guilt-ripping you severely since she mentions the bullying and thoughts of death. Sometimes life is a pain. It's not worth it anymore.

Himiko feels like you're the only reason she gets up in the morning. A reason to press on another day. She doesn't want to lose that since it would be like a part of her has died. So she makes sure you're focused on her a lot. You're not a cruel person; she knows that, so that's why it is safe to say that her mindset and unhealthy lifestyle will concern you. Himiko feels safe and comforted that you're worried about her mental health, and she'll keep it that way if that means your attention is solely on her. After all, she can't live without you.

✧Amami, Rantaro✧

Rantaro is another person who takes time before actually falling for a person. He is cynical and has seen the worst out of people left and right. He always assumes that people are only out for their self-interests. He hates the flowery words people throw at him for his looks alone. They’re so surface-level. So superficial. Just like his father. The only way Rantaro would ever fall deeply for someone is if the person is genuinely kind and isn’t looking for something in return. 

That is where you come in. Rantaro tests you after your first act of kindness. It has to be a one-time thing. He was actually caught off guard by your actions. You continue to surprise him, and in turn, he keeps you around. Oh no, don’t assume it’s for some surface-level bullshit like having you is a one-and-done thing. No. It’s permanent and something real to him. Anyone who thinks he’s that shallow knows nothing about him. 

He hates how people see him as a playboy, but sometimes that has its benefits. Using people he could care less for is pretty handy, especially when it’s for your sake. None of the words he says to them will ever amount to how he feels for you. If any of his admirers ever mess with you, he will confront them privately before destroying their self-esteem. Oh, and if he’s feeling a little sadistic about it, he will blackmail them. They really do have a loose set of lips to trust him with their secrets, huh? Just because they were wearing rosetinted glasses. 

The one thing in life Rantaro dreams of is traveling to escape his life. Now, he has you to share it with. He plans to take you with him one day when the time comes, but if you’re showing signs of not desiring such a thing…he’ll start small. You two don’t have to leave the country immediately, maybe in another city or a cabin somewhere out of town. You are coming with him one way or another. He will be frank when he says he is selfish because everyone else is. He has finally found something in his life that is worth his efforts, and no one is taking that from him. Not even you. 

✧Hoshi, Ryoma✧

Ryoma is pretty similar to Himiko in the sense where you are probably his only reason to get up in the morning. However, that'd be selfish to burden you with such knowledge. If you knew this, that'd bring concern. It's not like he hates pity or being cared for…it just makes him believe he's acting like a spoiled child. It's safe to say that Ryoma is a very selfless yandere. He doesn't see you in a bad light, nor does he accuse you of doing any wrong. Why? Oh, that's because you're the only person who was ever nice to him. 

It's a cruel world we live in and he has seen the worst some days. His appearance plays a big factor into how he's treated and the focal point of his insecurities. Ryoma does not feel capable of doing a lot of things because of it. Still, he does want to prove himself to you; that he deserves the right to stand by your side after putting up with him. Ugh, it makes him sick to his stomach how hopeful and clingy that sounds. He just wishes that he could be as cool as those guys he's seen in shows. The ones who are so unbothered but know when to take action; things he is not. 

Rivals scare and irk Ryoma. All his intrusive and self deprecating thoughts play in his mind when faced with them. It's awful. Why does he keep imagining standing above their corpses? He isn't capable of that—he can't even take a dose of confrontation. It's stupid of him to be annoyed by these rivals or your friends. You don't belong to him nor are you dating him. Still, that is a nice thought. 

Though sometimes these people get him in a depressive state and he never wants to talk about it. It would be attention seeking to tell you how much he craves death whenever things go wrong or when he sees you happily engaging with others. You don't need him, but he really needs you. That's the most selfish thing he's ever thought of. He wants to admit that yeah, you're the reason why he's still alive. Sometimes he wonders why he can't have this and then he looks at himself. Would it really be too much to ask for? Maybe, but over time he has come to see that he wants to live. So no one is going to take his very reason to walk another day. No one.

gonna be so real and share a take that would actually get me crucified if i weren’t anon: i am a hardcore komahina shipper (i am also a multishipper nobody get on my ass for the non-controversial part) like i truly believe there is genuine solid evidence for mutual komahina in canon. they are literally made for each other to me they are the love story of the ages komahina real etc etc.

that’s not the controversial part. the part i’m scared to share is that i have not do not and will not ever perceive saiouma this way. it’s like… fine. sure. whatever. i have other ppl i’d prefer to pair them up with but alright have fun. and yeah kokichi is written to at least have some level of surface level attraction to shuichi. but i sometimes see people comparing saiouma to komahina and it makes me feel CRAZY because they are not even remotely close to being on the same level. it’s like comparing fast food to high-end dining to me. i’m sorry but they’re just… not at the same quality or league to me. at all.

it makes me feel like SUCH a hypocrite bc i’ve heard ppl talk shit abt komahina going “ohh hajime shows no signs of reciprocation at all” and immediately i can pull out like 7 different instances and 5 pargraphs of analysis proving otherwise but like. i CANNOT see saiouma as reciprocal i’m sorry!!! that shit is one sided as hell!!! shuichi is confused by kokichi at BEST there is no proper chemistry there!!! hell i’d argue kokichi doesn’t actually even love shuichi that shit is infatuation at most! i’d be fine leaving it alone and minding my business but tbh the saiouma fanbase annoys me so bad that it’s become a full-on notp for me. especially fanon pregame shit it’s fine to enjoy yandere dynamics or whatever but those literally aren’t even the same characters anymore. but i will never say that on main bc i enjoy not being mauled to death by hordes of angry shippers

Why is PreGame Shuichi always seen as a yanderé when he's just an antisocial DanganRonpa fan?

Excellent question!

This has roots back into the japanese fandom so its hard to fully research actually, however we know kagehara comes from the japanese fandom through a compound kage, and hara, aka shadow saihara, kagehara 影原. This is likely chosen due to persona's use of shadow selves if i had to take a guess, which might also be why kagehara tends to have a much harsher yellow eye color like the one seen below on Shadow Yosuke, before this became so main stream there was also inchara 陰キャ原 for in character + saihara but this has never seen any popularity in the english fandom to my knowledge. There's also these names for the rest of the characters but only bonkichi really saw any traction in the english fandom

So now they we know the basis of the name, where does the yandere come in?

The first fanfiction i can find on ao3 that seems to lean into this view of pregame Shuichi of him being a dangerous creepy guy is This Must Be What Fun Is from 2017, while it lacks some of the more common later tropes and even has shuichi marked as aromantic, the obsessive and bloody traits commonly associated with it is definitely all there.

The first fic in the tag "pregame-shuichi" is audition from february 2017, however they used the tag ORIGINAL saihara which got tag wrangled in, and the first REAL use of the tag is from Can't Help Falling from December 2017

After that the first use of Kagehara in a fanfic description is At Least It's Something from July 2018 which is a selfcest fic with some WILD plot points actually i might need to look at that one later just out of morbid curiosity

From this, we can know the trope has its roots from the very start of the games release. Where the character of pregame shuichi in the audition tapes easily slid into an otaku characterization due to his obsession with danganronpa.

Thus, its easy to see where his creepy pervert personality come from, otaku stereotypes. You'll see this stigma in a lot of anime where characters try to hide being an otaku and such. This is why Kagehara often is soon as very reclusive, spending all his time and money on one thing, danganronpa, and not caring for anything outside this thing. To the point of antisocial behavior or becoming a threat to others. Immature, obsessive, and sexual deviancy. Classic stereotypical otaku characterization.

One of the stereotypes is usually being a creep towards an object of affection, and thus as the most popular ship, kokichi easily slotted into that stereotypical role of the object of affection. He's small, easily made a bit more feminized, and thus able to be the soft kawaii to be harassed.

Which as this becomes popular, likely for the same reasons any "zomg the main character is EVIIIIL actually" kinda thing gets popular, led to more people playing in the space and pushing it further and further until we get to where we are today!

Though, just between you and me, i have my own personal theory. I can't back it up with anything but it makes sense to me.

The audience comments in v3 are unhinged at times, with comments like "I wanna see the color of Shuichi’s blood" and "I want to break Shuichi’s fingers <3" the audience although only here for a short time has a very strong characterization and interesting dialogue. However, how do you portray this in a story? You really can't without someone to act as the proxy.

With the most fanboyish audition video, and the popularity to back it up, Shuichi ended up being this proxy. Kagehara isn't actually a reflection or evil version of shuichi or anything, it's the proxy to hold the audience in a way thats easy to write, and without the risks of say, writing an oc.

All of the fucked up things we hear about the audience and outside world, all the bad things, the talk of how boring everything but danganronpa is, these elements need a surrogate to embody it or else it can be hard to write with them. That's what kagehara is, the audience and what tsumugi tells about the outside word in a convenient familiar character shaped proxy Kokichi just got nabbed along for the ride as the most popular ship

Actually I've been thinking about my Pregame Shuichi a lot

Pregame Shuichi headcanons and also I got carried away and made a short prologue fic for it

I see pregame Shuichi as a person with very very bad intrusive thoughts and likely some form of undiagnosed personality disorder. To make it more clear this is my pregame shuichi im using my own personal pregame name for him, Shinichi. If you want specifically a more fanon kagehara or bonkichi send another ask specifying

Shinichi was having a normal day, people watching while writing in his notebook. He liked to watch the people go by, even if he never had the guts to talk to them. How could he when he couldn't stop thinking about all the ways he could hurt them. How easy it would be to just plunge his pencil into-

He took a deep breath and turned his pencil back to his notebook. Writing down the gory thoughts and impulses that made his fingers twitch. It was cathartic, to write them down, it felt almost like purging himself of the thoughts. Channeling them into writing a potential execution or murder for his fangan even helped make it almost feel productive. He'd been getting behind on updates.

Then he locked eyes with them for only a split second, and their mind went wild. Depraved lustful thoughts swirled in their brain, and they quickly snapped their eyes away.

With a shaking hand he fumbled for a cigarette, needing to calm his thoughts. He hated smoking, he hated everything about it, but it would shut up his brain for a few minutes. Long enough to regain his composure, frantically tugging down his face mask.

Lighting it up, he blew his thoughts out with the smoke. He could feel his body unclenching, and his mind slowed. Even in that smoke, they couldn't stop thinking about them. They had looked so...innocent, sweet, the kind of person that had his hands twitching to touch and hold and rip into and devour.

He remembered they smiled at him when they made eye contact, they hadn't originally noticed in their panic. It made him blush, no one had smiled at him in awhile. It felt...nice, to be noticed, acknowledged as existing. He wanted to run after them, to chase them down, to talk with them and maybe for once in his pathetic life not ruin a social interaction.

That would be really weird though, and he didn't want such a nice seeming person to think of him weird. So he turned back to his notebook, writing down all the information he had seen from that glimpse. A few moments later when he looked down at his notes and realized he had approximated so much as their shoe size, that he knew he might have been a bit of trouble...

Shinichi cannot stop thinking about his beloved, its a problem, hurting them or having sex with them or both quickly become one of his most prominent intrusive thoughts that plague them constantly

He's both very drawn to and repulsed by the thoughts, he thinks its pretty and aesthetic and god it would feel good but also he's a monster for that he CAN'T!!

Definitely stalking them, Shinichi probably doesn't even fully realize that they've gone beyond a normal background check on a new friend and into stalking until they've broken into their house and he takes a look at what he's doing, oops!

Constantly beating themselves up for their obsession, but can't stop himself even as he calls himself a creep and a monster, he can't stop himself from channeling his thoughts and desires into fucked up stories and gruesome drawings, its cathartic.

CLINGY if you be his friend, he's TERRIFIED of being left behind or that you'll realize he's a freak and leave him. Would die for you in a heartbeat.

Shinichi's a fussing type, the type to call you at 3 am because he had a bad feeling and wanted to make sure you're okay. This and variants of it happens twice a week minimum.

He's very self aware that he's fucked up and wrong for all this but...but...he needs it! It feels more tolerable then just rotting! Like he has a reason for living!

His parents give him terrible advice when it becomes really blatant he has a crush, telling him to be more aggressive about it and to keep pursuing them and to be a strong man they can rely on that's what people want. This does not help his intrusive thoughts at all and makes him worse, thanks mom and dad.

A sadomasochist, he doesn't mind if you slap him and boss him around as long as he gets to be near you, and likely finds the whole thing very very hot and fantasizes about it if you do.

Despite being a sadist Shinichi doesn't actually want to hurt you but if you happen to get hurt from other ways they'll absolutely sneak a picture at it to stare at when he wants to hurt them, he knows he's a monster for it, but if keeping a collection of photos of their scraped knees and papercuts makes it easier to not pin them down and see them bleed for him and eat their heart then he has to do it anyways.

Doesn't want to admit to their beloved that anything is wrong or they're obsessed but will crumple like a wet paper towel if pressed

Shockingly actually very observant and good at putting together and remembering small details when he can actually focus.

Is using their beloved as a form of self harm, using them to justify feeling worse and doing things bad for his mental health because he deserves it!

Nope, it's based on that silly headcanon of pregame Shuichi being a yandere!

I'm bored in school so here's my take on a few pregame characters

I have everyone's personality, backstory, and motivation for joining the killing game all though out

But here are just my personal favorites(Shuichi, Kaito, Maki, and Kokichi)

Shuichi - Not a yandere or anything, Literally just acts like your average teenager. He was either in choir or cooking club(Maybe both) and wasn't actually too crazy about being a detective and only asked for that specific talent because of the cool possibilities of his execution. He didn't really have anything going for him in life and he loved Danganronpa anyway, So he wanted to be apart of it. He was acting like a crazed maniac in his audition tape to make sure he got in. His parents are much more average than the screen-writer and actors they are in-game but they still neglected him a lot

Kaito - Basically the same as his in-game counterpart with him just acting a bit different because he doesn't have the pressure that being an ultimate comes with. He still dragged Shuichi and Maki off to be his friend(Though for different reasons). He also plays an exaggerated version of himself in his audition tape to higher his chances of getting picked, But he did still join for fame and fortune. He doesn't have a father but still has a mother with Kokichi as his younger brother(I explain why this would be changed for in-game in Kokichi's segment)

Maki - Again, Also the same as in-game just without the "Do you wanna die?" threats. I can see her actually going through the backstory that was written for her, Only differing thing is the fact she escaped from the Holy Salivation Society after her friend died. Her motivation for auditioning was to die(And protect her only friends if they got in too). She really didn't want to be the ultimate assassin and most likely auditioned for something totally different, It was only assigned to her because of her backstory being less work to change

Kokichi - Not a fucking "uwu soft bean", He's literally just as chaotic as he is in-game(Just less y'know,,, Murdering people). Didn't originally plan to get the main antagonist role but was ecstatic when he found out he got it, And because he's the antagonist they had to change both his and Kaito's backstories(Because if Kaito remembered growing up with him, It would ruin Kokichi's antagonist role. Cause he could tell certain things he was lying about and fuck up his plans) he probably joined for the hell of it and maybe to try and help Kaito survive. He's also in student government and yearbook, Nobody knows how he got into either of them(He doesn't even really know)
