Lines and People

Tagged by @late-to-the-fandom. I initially I wasn't going to make a post, but I had a good writing day today and wanted to celebrate.

Here lies one of my favorite parts I revised in my current WIP - that I'll loosely call "Queer Boi internalizes loneliness like the jaws of a lion". This section is about 11 or 12 sentences depending on what you count as standalone sentences.

To Ogasawara, he’d say [Sasaki's] thinking. And in the same breath he’d pull a chair, and say all his thoughts weren’t loud enough if he wanted someone to pull his ear. Which in “Jirou-speak” (thank Yakoto for the Ogasawarisms she deciphered and there had to be enough now to fill a notebook for the Japan Times’ Latest Reads), it said something along the lines of The fuck you doing, Sasaki? and You look shit. Like mad shit. And he’d keep the two shit’s roped together: because on one hand he couldn’t decide where it was better to end with crap, and on the other hand it didn’t matter if Ogasawara could see him laugh. That Sasaki — not in the classroom (but in the classroom: starting to sleep), in a ceiling-less place of nothing, with no furniture than his desk and the one in front of him for Ogasawara when he tips around to flick his head, and there are no walls and no floors and this is somewhere touching Heaven, if something like that could exist in a figment of your imagination — told him smartly: he doesn’t get it. And that’s how he always won at cards. Yet the Ogasawara inside his head (and maybe the real one) could see him through. And see he was a lot more than what he says, just by principle of being friends. And because Ogasawara rhymed with nosy (he only agrees to it because it’s stupid). Because it’s hard to fool someone you’ve known for years. Like, for instance, there’s yourself. And then the best man you’ve ever known pulling sixties on his finals, just to graduate to a good school that’s only minutes from your campus.

SOUNDSYSTEM builder. Mr. Osei has been building SOUNDSYSTEM in Jame Town for over 25 years. It is a family business he inherited long ago. I met him two years ago during @yakotomusic's video shoot. That was my first time seeing how these big Soundsystems are built and/or fixed when Damaged. Empty House is the new project from Fred Laird  (Taras Bulba; Earthling Society).   This debut record was recorded over a three day period in March 2021. 

The idea was originally based on the music set out by The Taj Mahal Travellers freeform soundscapes, Midori Takada’s marimba and harmonium excursions and Usuma Yakoto’s minimalistic rhythms. The Zen Buddhist approach of No-Mind or Mushin was adopted in the freewheelin’ way the album was created which was in a consciously unconscious manner with no actual idea or blueprint beforehand. Pick up whatever instrument is around and play and see what happens.  

The instruments that were around at the time of recording were – Organ, Guitar, Bouzouki, Shakuhachi Flute, Dizi Flute, Temple block, Tibetan bells, biscuit tin, a buddha radio, one of those drums that hippy buskers plonk about on outside Scope, congas and a Gakken Synth. Some field recordings were created by capturing a leaking faucet in a garden centre and the eerie sound of some bamboo chimes recorded in Fred's garden the day after the first lockdown started (no traffic on the roads, up in the air or out in the street).

'Mushin' means no-mind or empty mind that you attain through meditation or if you’re a martial artist through your patterns (Poomsae, Kata etc). However recording an album on achieving Mushin, would be the sound of silence. So, the idea was to create drifting pieces of music like when tiny thoughts or images drift in and out of your head whilst trying to achieve Mushin – The distractions so to speak.
