maybe this is weird (and I do promise I’m dropping the rest of the lore in a hour or so) but
in the rewrite, i always write Altaïr as seeing Desmond as:
Altaïr: this is my little brother, my son, my best friend, and annoying twin that makes all the reckless mistakes i already learned from. i love my boy, but damn if he doesn’t be doing some wild shit
wereas Desmond is like
Desmond: i love Altaïr! he’s my brother, my best friend, one of the few people who I’d happily consider my father, my face twin, and (did I already mention?) best friend! he makes a lot of mistakes, and we disagree about lots of stuff, but i’m so happy he’s in my life
Altaïr in permutation 17: this sucks. Des isn’t even here right now (hist time) and he can’t even hear me when I’m trying to talk to him (in modern time)
Desmond in permutation 17: this sucks. Altaïr isn’t even here right now (modern time) and I’m so fucking lonely !! !! !! now I’ve gotta die to turn on the eye and then what?! no one is coming back for me!! I don’t even know where Alex is, I’m just praying that I’ll survive after dying to get Elijah and keep him safe, but this shit sucks!
#y'know the funny thing is#i spent almost an entire month and a half#rewriting assassin's creed--just all of it--with the intention that desmond stays alive and eventually gets to live happily#which is still the main endgoal of the protocreed au#but like??? every character in AC that would've treated Desmond well was DEAD and all of his living allies would most definitely use him#even if they're his family or friends he would never be put firts#*first#i was genuinely thinking about giving up on the rewrite simply bc in canon there is no character that was alive and willing to treat Desmond#like he's someone that matters#and i knew that Desmond time traveling was a thing but I still wanted the modern day era to still have weight#and the way ubisoft wrote their ac games is that: there is no hope. not really#no matter what you or other people do good will never win#and i was truly unsure how to get around that depressing narrative#but then!!!#suddenly protocreed!#i don't know what possessed me to plug that disc back in but--#i played that game and i was like: yeah he's dating desmond#like-I don't even know how to say this#but Desmond and Alex OTP for the win and i don't have any in universe explanation for it (on Desmond's side) simply bc#both the assassins and the templars don't let the man socialize they just plug him in the animus and expect him to be seen and not heard#like the Manhattan connection was really easy to make since Desmond was kidnapped there and then returns in AC3 to make a lovely full cirlce#but all I could think was Alex definitely loves this man#they make each other better AND worse#anyways#this is a lot of tags talk about Alex and Desmond#when Alex isn't even in the main post but#Altaïr Claudia and Ezio are Desmond's closest family#and he's very close to Connor and Aveline but he's taken for such a fucking ride#when the grandparents that took him in when he was truly in a bad way#ends up being the same people who are his ancestors and not? dead?

I love how BS01 describes the roles of the members of the Voya Nui resistance
Tumblr media
There's Garan, the leader. Balta, the second-in-command and a skilled tinkerer. Dalu, the team's best fighter. Velika, a Great Being in disguise and the team's inventor, even more skilled than Balta. Piruk, the spy, their eyes inside the Piraka stronghold.
And then there's Kazi. He's a realist. His job is to stand there and remind everyone how utterly boned they are.
They could have made him anything, he could have been a medic, or a hunter, or a scout, but no. His title is "realist." Not even an allusion to him being the secretive one who knows about Axonn before everyone else, no, Kazi is defined by how he makes sure the people around him remember their circumstances and don't have too good a time. Icon, honestly.

It’s impossible to sneak up on Steve
Like, actually impossible
Dude has eyes in the back of his head. It’s some kind of mom superpower. (Or maybe it’s just the hypervigilance. Whatever)
Eddie first notices because the kids try to sneak past him a couple of times and he always catches them
He even calls them out by name. And he’s always right
Every single time
He catches Henderson trying to get a snack before they’re about to eat (not that Henderson particularly cares he’s been caught; he eats his chips without remorse)
He catches Small Wheeler trying to smuggle an R-rated movie over the Buckley’s side of the counter while Steve’s back is turned (not that Buckley would’ve rented it to him)
He catches Red and Supergirl both sneaking junk food into the cart while they’re out grocery shopping (neither of them are repentant, and Steve rolls his eyes but does exactly nothing about it)
Eddie’s interest is piqued
The first time he tries sneaking up on Steve, Steve catches him before he gets within three feet
How
“You jingle when you walk, Eddie.”
Okay, yeah, that’s fair
Next time, Eddie takes off his wallet chain and all his jewelry
Steve still catches him before he gets close enough to reach out and touch
“Your shoes squeak.”
Eddie’s pretty sure they don’t, actually, but fine. The shoes are next to go
And Steve still fucking catches him. Eddie can hear the goddamn smile in his voice as he says “Hi, Eddie,” just as Eddie is reaching out to grab his waist
“I could smell your shampoo.”
He could smell Eddie’s shampoo?
His fucking shampoo??
Alright, no, actually, that’s kind of sweet. But Eddie can’t exactly stop using shampoo, because then Steve will probably just be able to smell his hair grease or something. Eddie has to get creative, but he makes sure he’s not downwind of the AC vent next time
Yet Steve is the one who manages to ambush Eddie while Eddie is ambushing Steve, turning around and pulling Eddie right into him before Eddie can pounce, kissing him hard and quick, asking if that’s what Eddie was going for when he pulls away
Half dazed, half aroused, entirely frustrated, Eddie demands to know how the fuck Steve caught him this time, and Steve shrugs
“It just... feels different, when there’s someone behind you. The air, maybe? I dunno.”
Is this man even human?
(Given the general state of... everything, Eddie feels this is a legitimate question)
But Eddie isn’t one to give up once he becomes fixated, so he bides his time
He waits
And he waits
And he waits, until it seems like Steve is engaged in something distracting enough that he’s not going to be paying attention to how the room behind him feels, or however the fuck that works, and takes his shot
AND HE SUCCEEDS
He has to promise never to do it again, because his ribs are now bruised from Steve’s very surprised elbow, and Steve is mad and handing him and ice pack and bitching at him at full volume, but y’know what?
Fucking worth it

actually i'm still thinking about the moral orel finale.
Tumblr media
he has a cross on his wall. do you know how much i think about that bc it's a lot.
a lot of stories ((auto)biographical or fictional) centering escape from abusive/fundamentalist christianity result in the lead characters leaving behind christianity entirely. and that makes complete sense! people often grow disillusioned with the associated systems and beliefs, and when it was something used to hurt them or something so inseparable from their abuse that they can't engage with it without hurting, it makes total sense that they would disengage entirely. and sometimes they just figure out that they don't really believe in god/a christian god/etc. a healthy deconstruction process can sometimes look like becoming an atheist or converting to another religion. it's all case by case. (note: i'm sure this happens with other religions as well, i'm just most familiar with christian versions of this phenomenon).
but in orel's case, his faith was one of the few things that actually brought him comfort and joy. he loved god, y'know? genuinely. and he felt loved by god and supported by him when he had no one else. and the abuses he faced were in how the people in his life twisted religion to control others, to run away from themselves, to shield them from others, etc. and often, orel's conflicts with how they acted out christianity come as a direct result of his purer understanding of god/jesus/whatever ("aren't we supposed to be like this/do that?" met with an adult's excuse for their own behavior or the fastest way they could think of to get orel to leave them alone (i.e. orel saying i thought we weren't supposed to lie? and clay saying uhhh it doesn't count if you're lying to yourself)). the little guy played catch with god instead of his dad, like.. his faith was real, and his love was real. and i think it's a good choice to have orel maintain something that was so important to him and such a grounding, comforting force in the midst of. All That Stuff Moralton Was Up To/Put Him Through. being all about jesus was not the problem, in orel's case.
and i know i'm mostly assuming that orel ended up in a healthier, less rigid version of christianity, but i feel like that's something that was hinted at a lot through the series, that that's the direction he'd go. when he meditates during the prayer bee and accepts stephanie's different way to communicate, incorporating elements of buddhism into his faith; when he has his I AM A CHURCH breakdown (removing himself from the institution and realizing he can be like,, the center of his own faith? taking a more individualistic approach? but Truly Going Through It at the same time), his acceptance (...sometimes) of those who are different from him and condemned by the adults of moralton (stephanie (lesbian icon stephanie my beloved), christina (who's like. just a slightly different form of fundie protestant from him), dr chosenberg (the jewish doctor from otherton in holy visage)). his track record on this isn't perfect, but it gets better as orel starts maturing and picking up on what an absolute shitfest moralton is. it's all ways of questioning the things he's been taught, and it makes sense that it would lead to a bigger questioning as he puts those pieces together more. anyway i think part of his growth is weeding out all the lost commandments of his upbringing and focusing on what faith means to him, and what he thinks it should mean. how he wants to see the world and how he wants to treat people and what he thinks is okay and right, and looking to religion for guidance in that, not as like. a way to justify hurting those he's afraid or resentful of, as his role models did.
he's coming to his own conclusions rather than obediently, unquestioningly taking in what others say. but he's still listening to pick out the parts that make sense to him. (edit/note: and it's his compassion and his faith that are the primary motivations for this questioning and revisal process, both of individual cases and, eventually, the final boss that is christianity.) it makes perfect sense as the conclusion to his character arc and it fits the overall approach of the show far better. it's good is what i'm saying.
and i think it's important to show that kind of ending, because that's a pretty common and equally valid result of deconstruction. and i think it cements the show's treatment of christianity as something that's often (and maybe even easily) exploited, but not something inherently bad. something that can be very positive, even. guys he even has a dog he's not afraid of loving anymore. he's not afraid of loving anyone more than jesus and i don't think it's because he loves this dog less than bartholomew (though he was probably far more desperate for healthy affection and companionship when he was younger). i think it's because he figures god would want him to love that dog. he's choosing to believe that god would want him to love and to be happy and to be kind. he's not afraid of loving in the wrong way do you know how cool that is he's taking back control he's taking back something he loves from his abusers im so normal
#i had a really big fundie snark phase a year or two ago so that's part of like. this. but im still not used to actually talking about#religious stuff so if it reads kinda awkwardly uhh forgive me orz idk#maybe it sounds dumb but i like that the message isn't 'religion is evil'. it easily could have been. but i think the show's points about#how fundie wasp culture in particular treats christianity and itself and others would be less poignant if they were like. and jesus sucks#btw >:] like. this feels more nuanced to me. i guess there's probably a way to maintain that nuance with an ultimately anti-christian#piece of media but i think it'd be like. wayy harder and it's difficult for me to imagine that bc i think a lot of it would bleed out into#the tone. + why focus on only These christians when They're All also bad? so you'd get jokes about them in general#and i think that's kinda less funny than orel and doughy screaming and running from catholics lsdkjfldksj#i think the specificity makes it more unique and compelling as comedy and as commentary. but that's just me#like moralton represents a very particular kind of christian community (namely a middle class fundie wasp nest)#you're not gonna be able to get in the weeds as much if you're laughing at/criticizing all christians. but they accomplish it so thoroughly#and WELL in morel and i think that's because it chose a smaller target it can get to dissect more intimately. anyway#moral orel#orel puppington#(OH also when i say wasp here i mean WASP the acronym. as in white anglo-saxon protestsant. in case the term's new to anyone <3)#maybe it's also relevant to say that i'm kindaaaaaaaa loosely vaguely nonspecifically christian. so there's my bias revealed#i was never raised like orel but i like to think i get some of what's going on in there y'know. in that big autistic head of his#but it's not like i can't handle anti-christian/anti-religious media/takes. i'm a big boy and also i v much get why it's out there yknow#christianity in specific has a lot of blood on its hands from its own members and from outsiders and people have a right to hate it for tha#but religion in all its forms can be positive and i appreciate the nuance. like i've said around 20 times. yeah :) <3#(<- fighting for my life to explain things even though my one job is to be the explainer)

Dear Goyim Who Think Judaism and Israel Aren't Connected,
They absolutely are. The holy land of Judaism is Israel, and no amount of fiddling will get around that inconvenient fact.
Even throughout our exile, Jews clung to the idea of Israel, the holy land. Even after the Romans slaughtered us, sold us slaves, expelled us, and tried to erase our connection to the land (a propaganda that you seem to have swallowed), even after their successors tried to keep us from coming back (not that all of us left; some stayed, stayed through persecution and massacre and more), we clung to it.
Israel is the holy land. And, in the words of Jefferson, "To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world."
The central prayer in Judaism, Shema Yisrael, uses "Israel" as a synonym for the Jewish people.
We pray facing Jerusalem.
In old texts, it is incredibly common to see Israel used as a synonym of Jews. Thus in Nathan Ausubel's 1948 Treasury of Jewish Folklore we see rabbis referred to as the "Sages of Israel" (in a discussion of why Jerusalem was destroyed, no less!), and the saying "Am Yisrael Chai" literally translates as "the People of Israel live!"
At the end of the Passover seder, we say, "L'shana haba'a b'Yerushalayim" (Next year in Jerusalem).
Psalm 137: "על נהרות  בבל שם ישבנו גם־בכינו בזכרנו את־ציון". Or, "Al naharot bavel sham yashavnu gam-bakhinu bezakhernu el-tzion" (Tzion, Zion, being another name for the land). "By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept as we thought of Zion." It continues, "How can we sing God's song in a foreign land? / If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning."
There are many rules that only apply when in Israel.
Observant Jews say, "ברוך אתה יי בונה ירושלים" (Barukh atah Adonai boneh Yerushalayim), or "Blessed are you, God, builder of Jerusalem" three times daily.
My very short Haftarah portion, which is assigned based on when you were born and thus not something I had control over, mentions Israel ("vegoaleikh kedosh Yisrael elohei khol-haaretz yikarei" - my brain can't stop singing it, Isaiah 54:5), in the context of God being the "Holy One of Israel". The prayer before the Haftarah reading includes the line "uvyisrael amo" (for Your [God's] people Israel). Again, my Haftarah portion was not in any way special; it was five verses. The translation of the part I read is all of 153 words. And yet it still mentions Israel. (The Hebrew, by the way, is 71 words.)
In short: by denying Jewish claims to Israel as the holy land (kedushat ha-aretz), you are erasing an indigenous people's history and implicitly accepting the narrative of settler-colonialist genociders who sought to make it as though the people whose land they were taking and who they were selling as slaves were not tied to the land and did not have any ancestral connection. Your claims are entirely false.
Sincerely,
Your Neighborhood (Non-Israeli, But Y'all Are Making Me Want To Consider Aliyah) Jew
*Extended footnote on the terminology used: There are two major (and definitely non-dialectical) indigenous languages in the region that still survive to some extent: Hebrew and Aramaic. (Other languages existed in the region - Phonecian and Ugaritic, for instance. But they didn't survive.)
The indigenous name for the region in Aramaic and Hebrew is ישראל, pronounced, roughly, "Yisrael". Via the process of translation, that became "Israel". The other common name for the region, Palestine, derives from the Roman Palestina, a relic of their campaign to destroy Jewish connection to the region by renaming it after a small Greek group who were long since gone, the Philistines. I am using the name the indigenous people of the region used, rather than the name of a colonial occupier trying to pretend like the indigenous people were unconnected to the land.

Last Cater-related post, I swear (at least for today, I'll never shut up about him-). It's just that I have Some Thoughts.
A couple of days ago I dreamt about his dream, and before I dozed off again I managed to write a very silly and ominous line that, literally translated, says "everything is born from hate". In my dream he was someone that didn't like nor cared for anyone (some students even feared him a little) because, after all, if you dislike everyone, you wouldn't even try to approach them, and thus when the time to say goodbye comes, it wouldn't hurt you, right? So my question then was... what if Cater isn't as chill as he seems in that card?
Today I've been zooming in and staring at his card for some time, and one of the things that caught my attention first were these Heartslabyul students here:
Tumblr media
Aren't they lined up too perfectly in front of a leader that's supposedly much less strict than Riddle? Also that one student being judged looks a bit too nervous to me... Another thing is the fact that everyone seems so far and unimportant. Like, sure, it's because it is his card, but most of them are standing in the shadow and the ones that we can see more clearly don't even have any facial features. Cater's seat is also super high, which could not only indicate his position of power, but also how he's purposely distancing himself from the rest. In contrast, we see how the things he likes (skateboard, spicy food, phone/Magicam and gavel [symbolising him being dorm leader]) are close to him.
Are we about to see a Cater that does whatever he wants and only cares about himself a little bit too much?? Idk but the similarities between the vibes of the background and my dream are making me insane--

I haven't seen enough people talking about the fact that Nine was completely willing to leave everything behind, just to go live with some guy he just met 😭
I LOVE SONIC AS MUCH AS THE NEXT GUY but if I'm not getting the timeline of Sonic Prime messed up, I'm pretty sure he only knew Sonic for like, a few days at max? Before the dude got sucked into the prism shard, and came back weeks later.
Apparently that was enough time for Nine to make up his mind on Sonic, because even if he was slowly warming up to him before Sonic left, he suddenly came back and Nine immediately went "let's build a new home together in the grim!!"
AGAIN, I'm not sure if I'm remembering stuff wrong so forgive me but 😭 As much as I understand Nine latching onto the first person that was genuinely kind to him, it was sorta funny how quickly it happened with Sonic to the point he wanted to include him in his new home. He even tried to make it more comfortable to Sonic by replicating elements from his old one.
Almost makes me wonder if Sonic would've stayed with Nine if he wasn't so sure that he could get everything back to normal :(

I considered sending you a DM but i think this is funnier.
About New Age.
I just had the thought.
That Reaper? Was 100% Nim's type.
Skeleton? Check. Tall? Check. In shape? Check. Powerful? Check. A warrior? Check. Great mind for battle and planning? Check.
She would be FURIOUS to know that someone who is loyal to Nightmare (Dust) earned and got Reaper's affection and attention.
Okay that is all
Ohhhh my gods. I am losing my mind over this. Ancha. ANCHA. I was exam-prepping when I saw this and it took me OUT. My goodness.
Anyways yeah, Nim would be obnoxiously salty, rolling in her grave, that some little peasant who followed her weaker sacrifice of a son managed to catch Reaper's eye... >:]
